Shai Gilgeous-Alexander will reportedly decide Lu Dort's future with the OKC Thunder
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander will reportedly decide Lu Dort's future with the OKC Thunder originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. After losing to the San Antonio Spurs in the Western Conference Finals, the Oklahoma City Thunder will need to make adjustments. With Chet Holmgren and Jalen Williams' long-term deals kicking in, Sam Presti and the front office have to decide which players they are sticking with. The Thunder have team options for Isaiah Hartenstein and Lu Dort. By declining those options, the Thunder can have more cap space to work with. While Shai Gilgeous-Alexander said he might not get involved, Presti might need to ask him a significant question in the offseason.Shai Gilgeous-Alexander might be the deciding factor for a Lu Dort returnOver the years, Gilgeous-Alexander and Dort have been the mainstays. They are the only players who have been with the team since 2019, so they have grown together through the rough period and the championship.Unfortunately, the Thunder deem Gilgeous-Alexander as the only untouchable among the longest-tenured duo on the team. SGA himself might be the one who makes the call on whether they let go of Dort or not.MORE: Lu Dort wants to stay with the OKC Thunder, but it is not his decisionLetting go of Dort is a logical move because they can use the cap space to make moves in the offseason. Dort has not been as effective as he was before, especially with Cason Wallace emerging as a top-tier defender."I was told, though, that Shai was playing a little bit coy there. He will at least remind Sam Presti and the Thunder management just how much he values having Lu Dort as his teammate," Tim MacMahon said on ESPN's NBA Today.Gilgeous-Alexander will have to weigh his options because he is a close friend of Dort's. Not only do they play on the Thunder together, but they are also Team Canada teammates. It will be a tough decision no matter what, but sticking with Dort still has its perks. There is also an option that Dort finds a reworked deal with Presti and the front office, but it is a slippery slope because he would love another big deal.More NBA news:Sam Presti and the Thunder will be sticking with Chet HolmgrenChet Holmgren is ready to use his WCF struggles to motivate him in the futureCason Wallace admits that the Spurs are still a 'beatable' team after the WCFJalen Williams believes the Spurs are another version of the ThunderShai Gilgeous-Alexander reveals that he plans on not giving any input for Sam Presti's offseason moves

R Ashwin teased RR sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi with a playful lack-of-4s commentFormer India international spinner and ex-RR star R Ashwin, like many cricket fans and experts, were simply mesmerised by the magic that Vaibhav Sooryavanshi produced during the IPL 2026 campaign. The 15-year-old RR opener played like a seasoned pro and scored 776 runs, which made his the youngest player in the history of IPL to win the Orange Cap. On his way to 776 runs, Sooryavanshi hit more sixes than boundaries, as he had 72 maximums to his name, compared to 63 fours. During the season, he also broke Chris Gayle's 13-year-old record of hitting the most sixes in an IPL season. The West Indian had hit 59 maximums. After Sooryavanshi swept awards at the end of the IPL 2026 campaign, his former RR team-mate, Ashwin, made a playful comment about the lack of fours hit by Sooryavanshi in the season. He jokingly said that the only award that Sooryavanshi did not win was for hitting the maximum fours in the season.MORE: IPL 2026: How Sunil Gavakar inspired Vaibhav Sooryavanshi to become a cricketerVaibhav Sooryavanshi's response to R Ashwin's quip wins heartsTo Ashwin's comment, Sooryavanshi had the perfect answer as he suggested that the only reason he had hit more sixes was that the format and the team demanded that kind of batting from him.He further claimed that he has already started practising with red-ball and is also ready to play more on the ground instead of constantly hitting out of the park as he aims to break into the Indian ODI side, ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup.Sooryavanshi said: "Yes, I will have to play on the ground because the next assignment is in a one-day format. I have practised a lot with a red ball, but no one has seen me do that, but they will soon."People think I love to hit every ball, but this is the T20 format, and coaches give me a free hand to go all guns blazing. And I hit the ball only because I know I can hit them, and it isn't out of compulsion."MORE: Can Sooryavanshi succeed in Test cricket for India? The Cricket News Opinion: Sooryavanshi's arrival guarantees a new era for Indian cricketIndian cricket has always found its identity in the connection between generations. Like the passing of a torch from one legend to another. After Gavaskar, India found its new hero in Sachin Tendulkar and after more than two decades of dominating world cricket, the 'God of Cricket' passed the baton on to Virat Kohli, and now the next champion in line seems to be Sooryavanshi, who is destined to become Indian cricket's new poster boy.To keep up to date with all the latest cricket news and share your opinion on the biggest topics visit our Facebook, Instagram and X (Twitter) pages.

Topes Notes: Is Charlie Condon's fast track to the majors back on?
In March, Charlie Condon entered the season having just blown up in Spring Training and ranked by MLB Pipeline as the Colorado Rockies' No. 2 prospect. His big league ETA, according to the site, was 2026. Other publications predicted it would be by summer.April and into May looked like those predictions might be a bit ambitious. He wasn't bad, but he wasn't going anywhere, either. The past two weeks, however, including having his jersey ripped off by teammates after Sunday's walk-off home run win over the visiting El Paso Chihuahuas, has some wondering if he made up for all that and is back on his fast track to getting his first Major League call-up.WALK-OFF HOMER BY CHARLIE CONDON TO SECURE THE SERIES DUB!!!!! pic.twitter.com/NyfWYyYYVy— Albuquerque Isotopes (@ABQTopes) May 31, 2026Condon rides a 12-game hitting streak into Tuesday's six-game road series opener at Salt Lake, including a seven-game stretch with at least one extra-base hit — the longest such streak for an Isotopes player since late July last season (Sam Hilliard had nine straight extra-base games). On the season, Condon is hitting .262 with eight home runs, 12 doubles and 25 RBIs. In that 12-game hit streak, he's hitting .366 and slugging .829 with seven doubles, four homers and eight RBIs.As for when that ticket to Denver, it could come at any moment. But that doesn't mean he's changing his mindset about the lofty expectations he's carried with him since being the No. 3 overall draft pick in the 2024 MLB Draft."It's hard to start playing the GM game of, hey, I need to get myself out of here," Condon told the Journal. Milan Momcilovic NIL value reportedly revealed following commitment to Kentucky
Feb 28, 2026; Ames, Iowa, USA; Iowa State Cyclones forward Milan Momcilovic (22) watches the time tick down in their loss to the Texas Tech Red Raiders during the second half at James H. Hilton Coliseum. Mandatory Credit: Reese Strickland-Imagn Images | Reese Strickland-Imagn Images The Kentucky Wildcats and head coach Mark Pope have finally landed their whale of the offseason, as Milan Momcilovic committed to the program late Monday night. BBN can finally rest.In recent weeks, the rumored NIL value for Momcilvic was around $7.5-$8 million, but the Wildcats didn’t have to pay nearly that much for the Wisconsin native. As the news broke, On3’s Pete Nakos reported that Momcilovic’s value is just north of $6 million. That report was seconded by KSR’s Matt Jones, who said he heard it would be around $6.5 million.CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander also says it’s in the neighborhood of $6 million.Momcilovic will still be one of the highest-paid players in college basketball, but it looks like the Wildcats got somewhat of a bargain compared to what some media members were reporting. The 6-foot-8, Wisconsin native was rumored to be making around $2 million at Iowa State last season, so it’ll be about a $4-4.5 million dollar increase. This was truly the Wildcats’ biggest win of the offseason, by a long shot. Pope loaded the roster with solid depth, length, and high-motor players, but Momcilovic will be the difference-maker in 2026-27. Coming off a season where he averaged 16.9 points ppg on 50.6% shooting from the field and 48.7% from 3-point range, the Wildcats finally got their guy.Milan Momcilovic's NIL deal is expected to be in the neighborhood of $6 million, a source told @CBSSports.A rocky past two months for Mark Pope just got salvaged with a massive get, as Kentucky beat out Louisville for the best shooter in CBB. Mike Breen, longtime voice of Knicks and NBA Finals, now set to call both at once
NEW YORK — Mike Breen’s recent interactions with Knicks fans have gone a little differently than they did during the decades prior.Breen — a voice of the Knicks since 1991, including for MSG Networks since 1998 — has had a front-row seat for so many of the franchise’s highs and lows, including the 27-year NBA Finals drought that will officially end when Game 1 in San Antonio tips off on Wednesday night.“I can’t tell you how many fans over the past couple of weeks, when you see them on the street or anywhere, they say, ‘Oh, I’ve waited my whole life for this,’ ” Breen, 65, told the New York Daily News.“Now, some of them might be 17 years old and haven’t been around for that long, but there are a lot of people, even my age, who don’t really remember the championship years. For them to experience this is special.”Breen does remember the championship years.A native of Yonkers, Breen was two weeks away from his ninth birthday when the Knicks won their first title in 1970. He watched again as the Knicks won their second — and still most recent — championship three years later.“My two favorite players for the Knicks were [Walt] ‘Clyde’ [Frazier] and Dave DeBusschere,” Breen said. “For me, I thought they were the greatest players on Earth. So, that started my love of basketball.”All of that history makes this year’s Finals unique for the Hall of Famer Breen, who, in addition to his longtime local coverage of the Knicks, has been ESPN and ABC’s lead NBA play-by-play announcer since 2006.This is set to be the 21st year in a row that Breen calls the NBA Finals on ABC — extending his record for the most Finals broadcasts — but the first time the Knicks have made it there during that stretch. It will be the first time Breen announces Knicks games in an NBA Finals in any capacity since 1994, when he was the play-by-play man for New York’s WFAN radio.“In terms of the pregame electricity, there’s no place like Madison Square Garden,” Breen said.“There’s so many great atmospheres around the league, but even the pregame electricity is very noticeable there. The Game 1 against the Cavs in the [Eastern] Conference finals, that fourth-quarter comeback, that’s as loud as I’ve heard the building in a long, long time.”On the local broadcasts, Breen calls Knicks games with Frazier. He’s set to call the Finals alongside analysts Tim Legler and Richard Jefferson, marking the first time that booth has done a Finals together.Knicks and Spurs fans can expect a neutral broadcast as Breen and ABC aim to appeal to a national audience.“I learned from the best in Marv Albert that you have a job to do,” said Breen, referring to the announcer who preceded him both at MSG Networks and as a Finals play-by-play voice.“Quite frankly, every year we do the Finals, the fans of each team think that we’re rooting for the other team, whether it’s the Knicks or whether it’s the Celtics or whether it’s the Lakers. That’s just the way they are, and quite honestly, that’s a beautiful thing because it shows how passionate [they are].”The Knicks enter the NBA Finals on an 11-game winning streak, during which they have outscored their opponents by 262 points. That’s the biggest point differential over an 11-game span — regular season or playoffs — in NBA history.Breen said he began to observe during last season that the Knicks had the potential to defeat anyone, as evidenced by their second-round upset of the defending-champion Boston Celtics. Now, buoyed by continuity, a roster led by Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, Josh Hart, OG Anunoby and Mikal Bridges has the Knicks four wins away from their first championship since 1973.“They had stretches of uneven play, stretches where you see they were still a work in progress,” Breen said. “That, to me, is [what is] most impressive — even in the ups and downs, the ebb and flow of a regular season, they stuck together, they kept working, and it just all clicked in the playoffs to the point where this is one of the great playoff runs in NBA history.”

Turang snaps skid as Brewers bats explode in 2nd inning for 16-2 win over Giants
Jun 1, 2026; Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA; Milwaukee Brewers manager Pat Murphy (49) smiles as Milwaukee Brewers second baseman Brice Turang (2) scores a run in the sixth inning against the San Francisco Giants at American Family Field. Mandatory Credit: Michael McLoone-Imagn Images | Michael McLoone-Imagn Images It had been a long and difficult 0-for-21 skid for Brice Turang, who had seen his batting average drop from .291 down to .263 heading into Monday night’s game. That all changed as Turang snapped his skid with an opposite field double in the first inning and ended up reaching base four times to help lift the Brewers to a 16-2 victory over the Giants. The Giants got up early on a two-run homer from Matt Chapman off Shane Drohan. But the Brewers offense had their starter’s back, promptly putting up seven runs in the bottom half of the 2nd, sending ten men to the plate. It got started with a leadoff walk from Jake Bauers after a successful ABS challenge on a 3-2 pitch. Following a flyout from Andrew Vaughn, the next six Brewers batters reached base. Sal Frelick doubled, Luis Rengifo and David Hamilton singled, Christian Yelich walked, Jackson Chourio doubled, then Turang tripled. William Contreras supplied a sac fly to bring home the seventh run of the inning and secure the 7-2 lead.BRICE MAKES IT A SIX-RUN INNING WITH A TRIPLE pic.twitter.com/KxuUco9PEa— Milwaukee Brewers (@Brewers) June 2, 2026“You had a big inning there. That’s a big inning against a good pitcher. That’s a good sign. You think about Bauers challenge there, that started the whole thing.” Murphy said. That was all Shane Drohan needed to finish cruising through his four innings of work, allowing just four hits and striking out five. He was followed by Chad Patrick, DL Hall, Grant Anderson, and Jake Woodford out of the bullpen. The Brewers offense kept supplying insurance runs, though. A bases loaded GIDP from Contreras in the 4th brought home another run. Andrew Vaughn had a 2 RBI single with the bases loaded in the 6th inning. Then RBI singles in the 7th by Yelich and Chourio brought home two more. Then in the 8th, the Giants put a position player, Buddy Kennedy, on the mound. The Brewers put up four runs against him to make it 16-2.Pat Murphy elected to give some rest to Brice Turang and Andrew Vaughn as the game got out of hand. That meant bringing Blake Perkins into the game in the outfield as Jake Bauers moved to first base.“I just wanted to get Turang off his feet for an extra half hour and to be honest I wanted to get Perk— Perk’s been maybe the most unlucky hitter we’ve had. The numbers are ridiculously bad. He’s hit some balls tremendously hard, especially right handed, so I wanted to get him some at-bats.” Murphy said. The Giants also made a line change and removed a number of their starters, including Willy Adames, who was 0-for-3 on the night. This game was well in hand since the 2nd inning as the Brewers offense just continued to demolish one of the worst teams in the league. Everyone in the starting lineup reached base at least once and eight of the nine had at least two hits. The only one who didn’t was William Contreras, who ended up with a pair of sac flies. The Brewers had 18 hits on the night and drew 11 walks. It was one of their most impressive offensive performances of the season. They’ll look to do it all again tomorrow in support of Kyle Harrison, who will be facing his old ballclub.

Jusuf Nurkic reveals what went wrong with the Suns during Mike Budenholzer's stint
Jusuf Nurkic reveals what went wrong with the Suns during Mike Budenholzer's stint originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The Phoenix Suns have had a rough few years, but it was at its worst during the 2024-25 season. This was when Kevin Durant was still on the team, and they were coached by NBA champion coach Mike Budenholzer. It was a promising team led by Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal. Despite the abundance of talent, they did not even make it into the Play-In Tournament, finishing 11th with a 36-46 record.Jusuf Nurkic gives a low-down on the issues with the Suns in 2024-25For a team that had the level of talent they had, finishing outside the Play-In is proof they had to make significant changes. Not just the roster, but also with the coach, as Budenholzer was let go after only one season. In a scathing interview about many points of his career, Jusuf Nurkic gave some context behind what happened with the Suns and why they were such a disappointing team in the 2024-25 season.MORE: The Kevin Durant trade might not be working out for the Houston RocketsNurkic was quite candid in his interview on X&O's Chat. It was an honest chat that detailed moments throughout his career, but his stint with the Suns caught a lot of people's attention, especially when it was about Durant and coach Bud."He was literally explaining to Kevin Durant how to score a basket. If he had been telling me, or to (Eric) Gordon or Royce (O'Neale) or Grayson (Allen), whatever. That's like explaining to a pilot how to fly a plane... The whole system felt absurd," Nurkic said about the Suns' struggles under Budenholzer.Unfortunately, Nurkic also revealed something about Budenholzer's personal life. It has been promptly called out across social media. In terms of the basketball aspect, telling Durant how to score points, that is objectively a bad move.It can alienate some players, and it seems Nurkic was not a fan. The rest of the team probably disliked the system as well, which led to the roster changing ahead of the 2025-26 season.More NBA news:Dillon Brooks makes a bold LeBron James prediction after the Lakers' eliminationDillon Brooks reflects on what the Suns could've done to not get swept by the ThunderThe NBA makes a surprising decision about Devin Booker's clash with the referees in the PlayoffsKevin Durant receives a heartwarming compliment from one of college basketball's bestThe Rockets are predicted to cut ties with Kevin Durant in the offseason

WTA French Open Quarterfinals Best Bets Including Elina Svitolina vs Marta Kostyuk
The WTA French Open tennis moves into the quarterfinals on Tuesday. This is from the bottom half of the draw, with the other two quarterfinals in the top half on Wednesday. The bottom half of the women’s tournament involves four players who have never reached a major final. One of them will finally get to the championship match, for the right to play for a prized trophy in tennis. The pressure is massive. The stakes are enormous. How these players handle stress will determine who moves on and who will fall short of a big opportunity. LWOS has our best bets for two matches on Tuesday. Post your best bets and thoughts in the comments.WTA French Open Andreeva – Cirstea: Time 5:00 ESTH2H: 1-0Mirra Andreeva faces Sorana-Mihaela Cirstea in a battle of young versus old. It’s the 19-year-old Andreeva against the 36-year-old Cirstea. Cirstea is set to retire at the end of the season. That would make this her final French Open. Reports this week indicated that Cirstea has no plans to change her retirement decision and keep playing into 2027. It seems that the freedom of not having to play much longer is enabling Cirstea to produce her best tennis. She is relaxing more and worrying less. Cirstea has looked very strong in this tournament. Still, she’s facing a player, Andreeva, who has reached the French Open semifinals before and is very comfortable on clay after having a tough start to her 2026 season on hardcourt surfaces.Best Bet to MakeAndreeva moneyline is priced at 1.56, just below the 1.60 threshold where a bet has reasonable enough value. So, we’re not going to recommend this as our single bet for the match. What you could do is put Andreeva moneyline into a parlay, but for a single bet, we will go with over 2.5 sets. Cirstea is in excellent form, probably good enough to win one set. Andreeva, though, looks so confident on clay. Also, Cirstea got very nervous near the end of her Round of 16 win over Xiyu Wang, suggesting she will get nervous here. Andreeva will win at least one set. If Cirstea wins the first set, Andreeva should bounce back and win the second set. It’s only if Andreeva wins the first set and Cirstea quickly loses confidence that the over 2.5 sets is not likely to cash, but Cirstea is playing so well that she should be able to push this match into a third set if nothing else. That being said, betting on over 2.5 sets is a value bet for sure.Value bet/ the best odds: over 2.5 sets @2.48 @UnibetJun 1, 2021; Paris, France; Elina Svitolina (UKR) in action during her during her match against Oceanne Babel (FRA) on day three of the French Open at Roland Garros Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Susan Mullane-USA TODAY Sports | Source: Lastwordonsports.com - Yesh GinsburgSvitolina – Kostyuk: Time 7:30 ESTH2H: 1–1Elina Svitolina faces Marta Kostyuk in an all-Ukraine quarterfinal. This guarantees that one Ukrainian player will be in the semifinals with a strong chance of making the final this coming Saturday and playing for the championship. Svitolina came back to beat Belinda Bencic on Sunday after losing the first set. She has won multiple three-set matches in this tournament and is showing the toughness of someone who desperately wants to lift a major trophy for the first time in her career. Marta Kostyuk just defeated Iga Swiatek and is now 16-0 on clay this season. She should be considered the more in-form player in this matchup, but playing Svitolina in the quarterfinals is a high-pressure moment, which will be new for her.Best Bet to MakeOver 2.5 sets is the natural first place to think of when making a bet on this match. However, the all-Ukraine part of the match could create a situation in which one player gets really nervous and doesn’t play as well as expected. The bet here is Svitolina moneyline. She has been to major quarterfinals more than Kostyuk has. Obviously, Kostyuk is tremendous on clay right now, but it’s not as though Svitolina doesn’t know how to play well on clay. She just won Rome and has been to the French Open quarterfinals before. She is more experienced and knows this is her big chance to win a major title. You’re getting an amazing price with Svitolina moneyline. Go for it.That being said, betting on Svitolina winning is a value bet for sure.Value bet/ the best odds: Svitolina winning @2.17 @PinnacleMain Photo Credit: Susan Mullane-USA TODAY Sports

Now, he has found a new home with one of college basketball’s blueblood programs.Momcilovic recently withdrew from the 2026 NBA Draft to return to college, and he announced on Monday night that he will play for the Kentucky Wildcats and head coach Mark Pope next season.College Basketball World Reacts As Milan Momcilovic Joins Kentucky WildcatsMomcilovic took to X to announce the news, and Big Blue Nation went wild.As soon Momcilovic announced his commitment to Kentucky, the college basketball world had plenty of strong reactions.Jon Rothstein, the college basketball insider for CBS Sports, offered some context around what Momcilovic brings to Kentucky.“Milan Momcilovic made 136 three-point shots last season at Iowa State and is tailor made to play for Mark Pope at Kentucky,” Rothstein posted on X. “His addition immediately makes the Wildcats a Top 15-20 team entering the 2026-27 season.”Ryan Hammer, host of the BlueBlooded podcast, pointed out that Momcilovic is the best shooter in college basketball and a massive commitment.“Aanndddddd BOOM. … Best shooter in the nation & one of the best CBB has ever seen is headed to Kentucky … Cannot overstate how damn important this is for BBN. Huge bag to get him & they need him,” Hammer posted on X.Jeff Borzello, ESPN’s college basketball insider, chimed in as well.“BREAKING: Iowa State transfer Milan Momcilovic, the best shooter in the country and the No. 1 player to enter the portal this spring, has committed to Kentucky,” Borzello posted on X.The Field of 68 co-founder Jeff Goodman also shared his thoughts about Kentucky’s big acquisition.“Kentucky just added a winner, a culture guy, and the best three-point shooter in the country in Milan Momcilovic to a team that sorely needed it,” Goodman said.Aaron Torres, a host for Fox Sports Radio, gave a ton of credit to Pope, who had been under fire for missing out on a number of targets in the transfer portal. Now, with the addition of Momcilivic and Malachi Moreno returning to Kentucky next season, there’s a ton of optimism surrounding this team.“Credit Mark Pope. There was no move left to make if he didnt get Milan Momcilivic,” Torres posted on X. “Now, he got two guys (Momcilivic, Malachi Moreno) who conceivably could’ve been drafted in the Top 35 this year with otherwise excellent core. Would have UK in the Top 20 headed to next year.”“Truly a season-altering commitment for Kentucky and the biggest addition of Mark Pope’s career. Milan Momcilovic is a perfect fit and unlocks the best version of everyone else on the roster. Worth the wait (and cost). Well done, Pope,” Jack Pilgrim of Kentucky Sports Radio added on X.Matt Jones, also of Kentucky Sports Radio, also raved about the move.“Last thing…Milan and Moreno is basically like getting two Top 7 players from the Portal class (I know Moreno is returning but it wasn’t certain) … That’s massive and we should celebrate it after a lot of worry about Portal season,” Jones posted on X.Tony Jones, who covers the Philadelphia 76ers and the NBA for The Athletic, predicted that the Wildcats will cause trouble for opposing teams next season.“Kentucky is gonna be a monster next season. Mark Pope cleaned up in the portal,” Jones posted on X.Pope and Kentucky needed a splashy addition from the transfer portal, and Momcilovic is exactly that.

Mandatory Credit: Brian Bishop-Imagn Images | Brian Bishop-Imagn Images The Virginia Tech Hokies continue to turn over their 2026-27 basketball roster. While much of Tech’s offseason has been focused on adding veteran players via the NCAA transfer portal, head coach Mike Young deviated from that roster-building process on Monday, adding a commitment from 6-foot-8 wing Eltayeb Eltayeb announced his commitment to Virginia Tech. Eltayeb is a native of Sudan, but played last season at Sunrise Christian Academy in Bel Aire, Kansas. He played well, averaging 21.3 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. Eltayeb also shot over 43% from 3-point range, giving Young another perimeter threat. At 6-foot-8 and only 170 pounds, Eltayeb still has some growing to do. He’s built similarly to Virginia Tech newcomer, Kuol Atak, who transferred to the Hokies in March after spending two seasons at Oklahoma. Atak is 6-foot-9, 192 pounds, and is also an excellent outside shooter. Shohei Ohtani had a three-hit night and has 10 hits over his last five games.Arenado gave the D-backs a 2-1 lead in the seventh inning, hammering his eighth homer of the season to left-center. Dodgers falter late in low-scoring loss to the D-backs
PHOENIX, ARIZONA - JUNE 01: Emmet Sheehan #80 of the Los Angeles Dodgers delivers a first-inning pitch against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field on June 01, 2026 in Phoenix, Arizona. (Photo by Norm Hall/Getty Images) | Getty Images Experience won out over youth as Eduardo Rodríguez outdueled Emmet Sheehan to lead the Diamondbacks to a 4-1 win over the Dodgers. The reigning back-to-back champs rolled into town with the Diamondbacks having scored only three runs in their last two games—and for a team that managed to hit three home runs, the Diamondbacks offense could’ve done a lot more than just those four runs, even if they turned out to be more than plenty for the home squad. The Dodgers even took the early lead but allowed one home run in each of the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings to surrender control of this one, with those first two coming against Emmet Sheehan before Ketel Marte gave the Diamondbacks a bit of cushion with a two-run shot in the bottom of the eighth against Jack Dreyer. What was a cruise control outing for Sheehan got quickly undone by solo shots to Tommy Troy and Nolan Arenado. Because Sheehan was removed right after that second home run, he left the game on the hook for the loss, his second of the year, even though he didn’t record a single pitch with the Dodgers trailing. Inducing a lot of soft contact but without a ton of whiffs, Sheehan paid the price on a couple of mistakes against Troy and Arenado on a fastball down the middle and a slider that didn’t break enough, respectively. There is a symmetry to acknowledge with Troy and Arenado being the two players to go yard—while Troy was hitting the first long ball of his career, Arenado was making it an impressive 33 homers against the Dodgers, two shy of the Giants for the team he has hit the most home runs against in the bigs.Sheehan’s performance covering six-plus innings with just two runs is seen in a worse light because Eduardo Rodríguez was up to his usual tricks this year. The Diamondbacks ace allowed one base runner per inning, and Shohei Ohtani, who was responsible for two of the Dodgers’ five hits against Rodríguez, helped the visiting team open the scoring in their only run against him. Ohtani led off the third with a double, stopped at third after another double from Andy Pages that was nearly caught, and then came around to score on an RBI groundout from Freddie Freeman. It was too early for Arizona to play the infield in, and with the Dodgers’ offense falling silent after that, it proved to be the correct decision. Mookie Betts and Kyle Tucker were easily retired, and the Dodgers stranded a runner in scoring position in that inning. Before Marte upped the D-backs’ lead to 4-1, the Dodgers had an opportunity to get back in this game. As was the case when they scored their only run of the game, Ohtani once again came up as the leadoff man at the top of the eighth and did his part by getting on thanks to an infield single that Marte couldn’t field cleanly. The rest of the offense was unable to do anything with it, and a double play quickly ended the threat. Shortly thereafter, Marte left the yard for his 10th homer of the season.Game particularsHome runs— Tommy Troy (1), Nolan Arenado (8), and Ketel Marte (10)WP— Taylor Clarke (2-1): 1 IP, 2 strikeoutsLP— Emmet Sheehan (4-2): 6.1 IP, 3 hits, 2 runs, 3 strikeoutsSV – Paul Sewald (15): 1 IP, 1 strikeoutUp nextAfter a successful Dodger debut, Eric Lauer will look to replicate the success he had against the Blue Jays, facing the Diamondbacks. Enjoying quite the resurgence with Arizona, Mike Soroka hopes to make it three straight quality starts. The first pitch will be at 6:40 p.m. (PT).

'Messi, Maradona, Tim': NZ footballer's viral fan club hits 4 million
Tim Payne has gone from 4,000 to 4,000,000 followers in a week (DAVID ROWLAND)New Zealand footballer Tim Payne's online fan club soared past four million on Tuesday, more than the All Blacks, after an influencer picked him out as the "least known" player at the World Cup. Argentine social media giant Valen Scarsini, known as "El Scarso", last week called for his fans to boost unheralded Payne's following, kicking off an online explosion of interest. But New Zealand's coach said the unexpected fame -- Payne had just 4,000 Instagram followers a week ago -- won't go to the head of the Wellington Phoenix right-back."At the moment I do feel like he's dealing with it really well, probably better than maybe some others would have," Darren Bazeley told stuff.co.nz.Payne, 32, who described the attention as "pretty crazy", could now be set to meet Scarsini. The Argentine said he would travel to Florida to watch New Zealand's warm-up match against Haiti in Fort Lauderdale on Tuesday."Guys tomorrow is the day," Scarsini posted. "Let's go watch Tim's game v Haiti and then we're going to meet him! Thanks to all who made it possible."Payne's new celebrity status means he now has a million more followers than the rugby-obsessed country's All Blacks. It has been the talk of the New Zealand squad's World Cup training camp in Florida."The players talk about it. I can hear the banter they're having with Tim, and I think it's amazing," said Bazeley. "Putting Tim up on a pedestal like that was really cool and probably not something that he, or anyone, expected," he added."I don't know where it ends or where it leads to -- or what that world really involves. I try to stay off that, as most coaches do."Another million or so would see Payne have as many followers as the population of New Zealand, which is around 5.3 million.New Zealand are the lowest-ranked team at the World Cup, which begins in Mexico, the United States and Canada next week. Tongue-in-cheek online comments have been comparing Payne to the greatest players from three-time World Cup champions Argentina."Messi, Maradona, Tim," said one of more than 66,000 comments on Payne's latest post, many of them in Spanish, which also received 2.1 million likes. oho/dh/pst

Patriots placing key free agent addition on injured reserve
The New England Patriotsplaced tight end Julian Hill on injured reserve on Monday. It was the corresponding move to the team trading for Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown. This news comes as the Patriots just signed Hill to a three-year, $15 million contract in March during free agency. The contract included $7.5 million fully guaranteed and a $4.2 million signing bonus. Hill's specialty as a blocking tight end was expected to be a major addition along the Patriots' offensive front. There was hope that he would help fill that No. 2 role as a more versatile option than former Patriots tight end Austin Hooper. This news is a blow for the Patriots.Hill is a devastating blocker who would have helped spring the Patriots' rushing attack. His exit has the team looking thin at tight end. Hunter Henry is the clear No. 1 option, but the team might have to turn to rookie third-round draft pick Eli Raridon earlier than expected to help fill the void. NCAA baseball tournament winners and losers: No. 4 seeds thrive, UCLA knocked out
The NCAA baseball tournament opened with a stunner.Top overall seed UCLA was ejected from regional play by Saint Mary’s after dropping Sunday’s elimination game 6-5 in extra innings. That came two days after the Bruins gave up a run in the ninth and lost 3-2 to the Gaels in the regional opener. How the losses occurred is nearly as shocking as the losses themselves: UCLA had been the nation’s most clutch team all season, winning 30 games in come-from-behind fashion — including Saturday’s 6-5 walk-off win against Virginia Tech to stave off an even earlier elimination.Joining UCLA with a flop in regional play was No. 2 Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets won two in a row out of the gate, including a 9-3 win against Oklahoma, before suffering back-to-back losses to the Sooners. Five other regional seeds were knocked out - No. 8 Florida, No. 9 Southern Mississippi, No. 10 Florida State, No. 12 Texas A&M and No. 13 Nebraska. Then there’s Arkansas-Little Rock and St. John’s, which became the 11th and 12th No. 4 seeds to reach the super regionals. The Trojans topped host Southern Mississippi on Friday and then scored two wins against Jacksonville State while the Red Storm toppled host Florida State twice, including the final game of the regional.Regional play also featured tournament history involving last year’s College World Series field. Here are the biggest winners and losers from the tournament’s first four days:WinnersLittle Rock and St. John’sAfter sweeping through Hattiesburg, Little Rock will face another underdog in Troy, which captured the Gainesville regional with Monday’s 10-2 win against No. 8 Florida. The Red Storm will meet No. 7 Alabama. This is the first time two No. 4 seeds have reached the super regionals in the same season and the fourth year in a row at least one has done so, following Murray State (2025), Evansville (2024) and Oral Roberts (2023). The other seven No. 4 seeds to do so are South Florida (2021), Davidson (2017), VCU (2015), College of Charleston (2014), Stony Brook (2012), Fresno State (2008) and Missouri (2006). Four have gone on to make the World Series in Murray State, Oral Roberts, Stony Brooks and Fresno State, with the latter the only No. 4 to win the national championship.West VirginaThe No. 16 Mountaineers beat Binghamton 10-1 in the regional opener but had their backs to the wall after Saturday’s 11-9 loss to Kentucky. Getting out of this spot required a ninth-inning rally in Sunday’s rematch against the Wildcats. Down 9-6, the Mountaineers scored on walk, a sacrifice fly and balk to tie the game before walking things off with a two-run homer. On Monday, WVU beat Kentucky 6-5 on an RBI single in the bottom of the 10th. The Mountaineers will next host Cal Poly, the surprising winners of the Los Angeles regional.North CarolinaThe Chapel Hill regional was seen as one of deepest and challenging bubbles of the weekend. North Carolina made things look easy. While they were able to avoid Tennessee, which went two-and-out against East Carolina and Virginia Commonwealth, the Tar Heels skunked the Rams on Friday and then beat ECU 7-5 and 9-3 to make the super regionals for the third year in a row. One of the standouts of the weekend was freshman left-hander Jackson Rose, who pitched four hitless innings in relief to assist the win in the second matchup against the Pirates. UNC has the arms to go deep into the World Series.OregonNo. 11 Oregon won the rivalry-loaded Eugene regional by crushing Yale 14-2 in the opener, blanking Washington State 4-0 on Saturday and then taking down Oregon State 4-1 on Sunday. While the longball carried the Ducks during the regular season, the regional was won with pitching, defense and a patient approach at the plate — such as the three-run seventh inning to put away the Beavers that saw Oregon score on two bases-loaded walks and a fielder’s choice. The Ducks next head to Austin to take on No. 6 Texas.LosersUCLAUCLA joins Vanderbilt last year as the only top seeds in tournament history to fail to at least reach their regional final. This was a what-if collapse that saw the Bruins cough up leads in their two losses to Saint Mary’s, undercutting the team’s late-game heroics during the regular season. The projected top pick in this year’s MLB draft, shortstop Roch Cholowsky, went 2 for 12 in the regional with two strikeouts, one walk, one RBI and two runs scored. It's a disappointing end for an outstanding season that included a 52-8 record and Big Ten titles in the regular season and tournament.Georgia TechTech seemed ready to sail into super regionals after beating Illinois-Chicago 22-5 and the Oklahoma 9-3 to reach the regional final. Then the wheels came off: Oklahoma pounded out 18 hits in a 15-8 win to force Monday’s elimination game and then broke the Jackets’ hearts with an epic comeback from a 7-2 hole. Down by five runs after six innings, the Sooners scored two in the seventh, one in the eighth and then another run in the ninth to force extras. Leading off the bottom of the 10th against Tech’s ace, Tate McKee, Sooner senior Dalton Tockey hammered a 3-2 pitch over 450 feet into dead center for the walk-off win.NebraskaThe No. 13 Cornhuskers were unable to advance through a loaded group after sneaking past South Dakota State 4-1 in the opener and then losing 6-3 to eventual regional winner Mississippi and 11-8 to Arizona State in Sunday’s elimination game. This is a disappointing end to an otherwise banner season: Nebraska finished second in the Big Ten behind UCLA, won 42 games and went 23-1 at home during the regular season, and was named a regional host for the first time since 2008.The 2025 CWS fieldFor the first time ever, none of the eight teams in the previous season’s World Series advanced to the super regionals. Four missed the tournament entirely in Arizona, defending champion LSU, Louisville and Murray State. UCLA, Coastal Carolina, Arkansas and Oregon State failed to get out of the weekend. This article originally appeared on USA TODAY: NCAA baseball tournament winners, losers: UCLA out, No. 4 seeds shine

MLB Injury Report: Elly De La Cruz goes down with hamstring strain, lat issue delays Garrett Crochet's return
In this week’s Injury Report, Elly De La Cruz goes down with a hamstring injury. The Red Sox will have to wait a bit longer for the returns of Garrett Crochet and Roman Anthony. And the Marlins could be without Eury Pérez for the next two months. All that and more as we run down some of the most relevant injury news around baseball.⚾️ Baseball is back! MLB returns to NBC and Peacock in 2026! In addition to becoming the exclusive home of Sunday Night Baseball, NBC Sports will broadcast MLB Sunday Leadoff, “Opening Day” and Labor Day primetime games, the first round of the MLB Draft, the entire Wild Card round of the postseason, and much more.Elly De La Cruz (hamstring)De La Cruz came up hobbling as he rounded first base on a hit in the fifth inning on Sunday. He was removed from the game with right hamstring tightness. After further evaluation, the team placed the 27-year-old star shortstop on the 10-day injured list on Monday with a right hamstring strain. There’s no timetable for De La Cruz. His injury gave the Reds the opportunity to call up top prospect Edwin Arroyo, who was slashing .323/.383/.562 with 11 homers and nine steals across 250 plate appearances in Triple-A. He’s a must-add in all formats where available.MLB Power Rankings: Gerrit Cole finding his groove for Yankees, White Sox crack the top 10The future is now for the White Sox, who went 18-10 in May. D.J. Short ,Garrett Crochet (shoulder)Crochet had progressed to live batting practice sessions, appearing on the verge of a rehab assignment as he works his way back from a bout of shoulder inflammation. He unfortunately has to pause his throwing progression after experiencing lat tightness. It’s not known how much longer this will delay his timeline, but a return before the end of June is probably optimistic at this point.Roman Anthony (finger)Crochet wasn’t the only Red Sox player to suffer a setback this week. Anthony had progressed to hitting off a tee, but came out of his session with renewed discomfort in his wrist. The 22-year-old outfielder has been on the shelf since May 4 with a right wrist sprain and a ligament sprain at the base of his ring finger. The setback certainly muddies the timeline for Anthony, but it’s hard to imagine he’s back before the end of June.Eury Pérez (thigh)Pérez had been pitching well last Wednesday against the Blue Jays, striking out nine batters over four innings, before he was apparently hurt while stretching before the fifth. He needed assistance getting into the clubhouse and was ruled out with a hamstring spasm. Pérez was later diagnosed with a right gracilis strain, the thigh muscle, and placed on the 15-day injured list with an estimated eight-week recovery timeline. This puts him out until late July. It’s unfortunate timing as the 23-year-old right-hander seemed to be turning a corner in his season after pitching six innings of one-run ball his last time out.Eury Pérez exits the game after seemingly injuring himself while stretching before the bottom of the fifth. pic.twitter.com/nWOWut591Y— Sportsnet (@Sportsnet) May 27, 2026Munetaka Murakami (hamstring)Murakami hustled to first to beat out a fielder’s choice in the third inning on Friday and came up grabbing his right hamstring. He was placed on the 10-day injured list on Saturday with a Grade 2 right hamstring strain that is expected to sideline the 26-year-old slugger for 4-6 weeks. Murakami has been excellent in his first two months in the majors, posting a .938 OPS with 20 homers, 43 runs scored, and 41 RBI across 246 plate appearances. Jacob Gonzalez was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte to fill the vacant spot on the roster. Gonzalez has some intriguing power potential himself, with 19 homers and a .317 batting average over 238 plate appearances in the minors. He’s also chipped in eight steals. He’s worth a look in deeper leagues.Konnor Griffin (forearm)Griffin was originally held out of the lineup last Thursday with right forearm soreness. Not considered a serious concern, Griffin returned to the lineup but was limited to designated hitter duties on Friday. He even went 2-for-4 with a stolen base. But with the return of Ryan O’Hearn over the weekend, the team opted to place Griffin on the 10-day injured list. The Pirates expect him to require just the minimum 10-day stint before he’s ready to return at shortstop. The 20-year-old phenom has really come around at the plate, hitting .306 in May after hitting .231 through April.Hurston Waldrep (elbow)Waldrep is working his way back from surgery in February to remove loose bodies in his right elbow. He threw two scoreless innings in a game at the Florida Complex League on Monday and was reportedly around 97 mph on his fastball in the 26-pitch outing. The 24-year-old right-hander will likely take the full month for his rehab assignment, but could join the Braves rotation at the end of June. Waldrep makes for a solid stash in most formats after posting a 2.88 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, and 55 strikeouts over 56 1/3 innings last season.Maikel Garcia (hamstring)Garcia’s status is one to watch on Tuesday. He left Saturday’s game in the seventh inning with a right hamstring injury. He appeared to be in some pain after running from first to third. The 26-year-old third baseman was held out of the lineup on Sunday and Monday as the team gives him every chance to avoid the injured list, which could still be a possibility if he’s not ready to return on Tuesday.Corey Seager (back)Wyatt Langford (forearm)The Rangers could be getting some major reinforcements back by the end of the week, with both Seager and Langford starting a rehab assignment with Double-A Frisco on Tuesday. Seager has been sidelined for the last two weeks with lower back inflammation. He could need just a couple of games before he’s activated. Langford has been out of action for much longer, hitting the injured list on April 22 with a right forearm strain. He’ll need to exercise more caution in his return after suffering a setback earlier in his recovery. Langford actually got a pair of games in with Triple-A Round Rock over the weekend, but will move his rehab to Frisco on Tuesday.Teoscar Hernández (hamstring)Hernández departed last Wednesday’s game against the Rockies with a left hamstring strain. It was pretty evident to manager Dave Roberts that Hernández would require a stint on the injured list. The 33-year-old outfielder is due to miss about a month. Alex Call and Ryan Ward figure to platoon in left field in Hernández’s absence.

Caitlin Clark calls out ‘blatantly wrong’ reports after Stephanie White incident
The Indiana Fever and their star guard, Caitlin Clark, continue to command the WNBA spotlight. They entered their weekend matchup seeking consistency but instead experienced more early-season turbulence. Tensions boiled over during a second-quarter timeout against the Portland Fire.Television cameras captured a heated sideline exchange between Clark and head coach Stephanie White on the bench. The animated discussion concluded with White calling over Raven Johnson as a substitute to replace the 2024 Rookie of the Year.. MORE: Fake Fever rumor involving head coach Stephanie White dupes Skip BaylessOn Sunday, Clark dismissed the severity of the bench behavior. She said to reporters that online spectators created entirely wrong narratives about the incident. “Two people being competitive,” Clark said. “There’s a lot of people out there in the media or on TV that think they know a lot of things and they’re just blatantly wrong. I ride for Steph. Steph has my back.”May 24, 2024; Long Beach, California, USA; Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark (22) warms up prior to the game against the Los Angeles Sparks at Crypto.com Arena. Mandatory Credit: Jayne Kamin-Oncea-Imagn ImagesCaitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever’s early strugglesClark recorded one of the worst statistical performances of her professional career against the Fire. She played 22 minutes, producing six assists and two rebounds, but struggled mightily from the field, converting just 1-of-7 attempts. Her best plays focused on playmaking. Portland took advantage of Indiana’s disjointed rotations to secure a commanding 100-84 victory. White took over the coaching duties for the Fever in the 2025 offseason. She consistently praised Clark’s work ethic and basketball IQ. Clark, on the other hand, expressed excitement about playing under the veteran head coach’s leadership. The tough loss to the FIre marked the Fever’s second consecutive defeat and fourth of the season. They will look to bounce back on Thursday when they host Angel Reese and the Atlanta Dream.

UFC legend Tito Ortiz dealing with memory loss, headaches after recent boating accident
Tito Ortiz suffered serious injuries in a recent boating accident. | Dave Mandel/Sherdog.com UFC Hall of Famer Tito Ortiz is still on the mend after being involved in what he calls “the worst accident of my life.” The former UFC champion shared some of the details behind a boating accident that occurred 11 weeks ago in a post on social media on Monday. “I was thrown from a boat traveling approximately 55 [miles per hour] and launched nearly 10 feet into the air. I was knocked unconscious and woke up 10 feet underwater. I remember opening my eyes beneath the surface and realizing I had to get to the top. It took about six hard strokes before I finally broke through the water,” Ortiz wrote on Instagram. “When I surfaced, the boat was over 100 yards away. As I floated there, trying to understand what had happened, I realized how close I had come to losing my life. Thankfully, the boat came back around and picked me up. I sat down on a beanbag, confused, in pain, and not fully understanding the severity of my injuries.” It hasn’t been an easy recovery for “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy,” who says who is still dealing with some of the effects of the accident. However, Ortiz also feels fortunate to still be alive. “The headaches, face pain, body pain, and memory loss that followed have been unlike anything I’ve ever experienced,” he continued. “For nearly two months after the accident, much of my memory was gone. Even now, pieces are slowly starting to come back. This injury has affected every part of my life. My health has suffered. My personal life has suffered. My business has suffered. I’ve missed opportunities, lost time, and faced challenges I never expected. “But through it all, one thing remains clear: God was watching over me. I truly believe I was given a second chance. Every day since that accident has been a reminder of how precious life is and how quickly everything can change.”Seeking Further Relief The 51-year-old Ortiz further revealed that he will undergo surgery next week. “On Monday, June 8, I will undergo C3-C4 disc replacement surgery,” he wrote. “My hope is that this procedure will finally relieve the pain and help me continue the road to recovery. Thank you to everyone who has supported me, prayed for me, checked in on me, and stood by my side during this difficult journey. Your encouragement has meant more than words can express. I’m not done fighting. This is just another challenge to overcome.” A member of the UFC Hall of Fame’s Pioneer Wing, Ortiz was one of the promotion’s first true superstars during its formative years thanks to rivalries with the likes of Chuck Liddell and Ken Shamrock. He reigned as UFC light heavyweight champion from 2000 to 2003 while authoring five successful title defenses. Ortiz’s last combat sports appearances came in September 2021, when he suffered a first-round knockout loss to Anderson Silva in a boxing match. From Rocafonda to the World Cup: Lamine Yamal's meteoric rise
Lamine Yamal with his father Mounir Nasraoui, his mother Sheila Ebana and his younger brother Keyne at the 2024 Ballon d'Or awards ceremony in Paris (FRANCK FIFE)Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo will play at a record sixth World Cup in 2026, but years from now the tournament may instead be remembered as Lamine Yamal's first. From the concrete square in Mataro the Spanish 18-year-old used to play in, to the biggest stages in world football, his rise has been dazzling. His uncle Abdul Nasraoui used to keep a small replica World Cup trophy in his bakery in the humble neighbourhood of Rocafonda, a 20-mile (32-kilometre) crawl up the Catalan coast from Barcelona, telling people it was for when his nephew wins it.Abdul had the trophy before Yamal even debuted for Spain, because he knew something special was coming. Many claim they did, in Rocafonda, but importantly for Barca it was Jordi Roura who got there first.Alerted to Yamal by a scout, Barcelona's then youth football chief Roura and close colleague Aureli Altimira pounced. In the chaos of a trial match, Lamine stood out."We were there with Aureli and at the beginning we saw him and he looked a bit odd, kind of scrawny, he moved a bit strangely, and we said, 'hmm let's see...'," Roura tells AFP."Then once they start playing, it's difficult, right? Because imagine 20 kids of seven, eight years old, all chasing the ball."Even so, Lamine would sometimes do something where you'd go, 'Damn!'. Instead of just running after the ball, sometimes he would find space, wait, look for his left foot, execute really quickly."One attribute, honed on the square where if your feet aren't fast enough to swerve defenders you can end up on the concrete, marked out little Lamine."Dribbling might be the most innate technical action, right?" says Roura. "It's hard to train a dribbler. He had that. He would feint, do things which made you say 'wow'."We thought this kid had something special, even if he looked a bit slight, and decided to sign him."Negotiations were quick with Lamine's father Mounir Nasraoui from Morocco, and his mother Sheila Ebana, from Equatorial Guinea. He was a quiet, even shy child, who loved to play football and spent a lot of time with his paternal grandmother, Fatima. She was the first of the family to move to Spain, arriving on a ferry from Tangier in 1990 and slowly bringing across her children in the following years.Fatima settled in Rocafonda and remains there, although Mounir, after being stabbed during an altercation in 2024, has since relocated to the upmarket Barcelona neighbourhood of Sarria. After Lamine's parents split up when he was three, he also lived with his mother in Roca del Valles, north of Mataro, but Rocafonda was always home.It is represented in his goal celebration, using his hands to show the numbers 304, the last digits of the neighbourhood's postcode. Now even in the more well-to-do parts of Mataro the number appears.Rocafonda is north-east of the elegant centre, a neighbourhood with a negative reputation for crime and poverty, although now it is famous for being where Lamine came from.Glance down the right street and you can catch a narrow glimpse of sweet Mediterranean blue. The winger and his father are spotted less frequently there now, but the games go on, with players duking it out in front of a mural of Lamine, painted in 2025."With all these great players... they're capable of doing the same, or more than they did when they were children, and that's very difficult, very rare, and that's why they’re the chosen ones," said Roura."(Lamine) enjoys playing, and I think that even when he was very little, when the challenge was greater, when a game was harder, that's when he liked it the most, you know?"- 'No limits' -Not everyone has the accuracy of the neighbourhood's "idol" and an "example" as youngsters sitting and waiting for a chance to play describe him.The ball is lashed high over the fence that divides the concrete pitch from the road, to howls of frustration. The kids call to a passer-by, before one player zips past on an electric scooter to retrieve it.But for the interception, it may have rolled down the road and past the bar run by Lamine's uncle, 'Familia LY 304', since he gave up his bakery.Over the past three years Abdul has answered plenty of questions about Lamine, but with concerns over the winger's fitness heading into the World Cup, he doesn't feel like speaking for now.On a shelf behind the bar, sits his replica trophy. Abdul's dream, just three years after Lamine made his professional debut aged just 15, could come true remarkably quickly."When you see the resume he already has at 18, it's scary, so what this kid can achieve has no limits," added Roura.Yamal was still studying for his exams during Spain's run to Euro 2024 glory, where he captured the world's attention with a sensational strike against France. That moment is memorialised on one wall of the bar, along with others from the winger's short yet glittering career for club and country, along with two framed shirts.Nearly three decades after arriving from Morocco, Abdul is still happy working. He sits and eats a few mouthfuls of vegetables before a shout comes from the kitchen and he is on his feet again, bringing dishes, olive oil and bread to customers."Ojala -- I hope -- ojala," he says on the prospect of Lamine bringing the real thing back to Rocafonda. "If we win the World Cup, then I'll talk."rbs/gj

Young’s single in the 10th inning gives Mariners a 3-2 win over the Mets, 3rd walk-off in 4 games
SEATTLE (AP) — Cole Young hit a game-winning single in the 10th inning and the Seattle Mariners beat the New York Mets 3-2 on Monday night for their season-high seventh straight victory. The Mets had their four-game win streak snapped. The walk-off victory was Seattle’s third in four games as the Mariners (32-29) improved to a season-best three games over .500. With one out in the bottom of the 10th, Young flared a single to left field off reliever A.J. Minter (0-1) to score Randy Arozarena, who started the inning as the automatic runner at second base and stole third as Patrick Wisdom struck out. Gabe Speier (1-2) struck out two in a perfect inning for the win, including Juan Soto leading off. The Mariners and Mets traded home runs all evening. Shortly after New York opener Austin Warren exited, rookie third baseman Colt Emerson hit a solo shot off an elevated sweeper from Mets lefty Sean Manaea to give Seattle the first run of the game. New York tallied each of the next two runs. Jared Young led off the fifth and tied the game with a homer off Emerson Hancock for the Mets' first hit. In the sixth, New York took the lead on Marcus Semien’s sixth home run. Semien has homered in back-to-back games after starting the season ice cold. The Mets didn’t lead for long, though. Josh Naylor smacked his sixth homer of the year in the seventh to tie it 2-all, though he didn't stay in the game for long. Naylor experienced back spasms on the home run swing and was replaced at first base by Wisdom in the eighth. Up nextMariners right-hander Logan Gilbert (3-4, 3.69 ERA) starts Tuesday night. The Mets had not announced a scheduled starter but are expected to use an opener before turning to a bulk reliever as they did Monday night. ___AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/MLB

‘We going to miss him terribly’ – Fermin Lopez sent message by Spain boss after brutal World Cup injury blow
BARCELONA, SPAIN - MAY 17: Fermin Lopez of FC Barcelona reacts during the LaLiga EA Sports match between FC Barcelona and Real Betis Balompie at Spotify Camp Nou on May 17, 2026 in Barcelona, Spain. (Photo by Pedro Salado/Getty Images) | Getty Images Spain boss Luis de la Fuente has admitted that Fermin Lopez will be a big miss for La Roja at World Cup 2026 after being ruled out of the tournament through injury.Lopez suffered a fractured metatarsal against Real Betis and had to undergo surgery. The midfielder has since admitted he’s found the setback really tough to take.De la Fuente was asked about Fermin and says he will certainly be missed by Spain but told the Barca star he will get more chacees in the future.“It’s a shame, yes. I often talk about timing, and these are situations that life throws at you. It seems it wasn’t his time because of this injury. But he’ll have another chance to show what a footballer he is,” he told Mundo Deportivo.“We’re going to miss him a lot because, in addition to what he brought to the team on the pitch, he was also a person I liked very much: so much energy, so much joy, a very beloved member of the group. “We’re going to miss him terribly, but his time will come, and he’ll have his chance, as I told him the other day when I had the opportunity to speak with him.”Lopez will now be focused on his recovery and ensuring he’s ready for the start of next season with Barcelona.

    Lazy Pundits, Again
SUNDERLAND, ENGLAND - APRIL 12: Nordi Mukiele of Sunderland celebrates on the final whistle during the Premier League match between Sunderland and Tottenham Hotspur at Stadium of Light on April 12, 2026 in Sunderland, United Kingdom. (Photo by Ian Horrocks/Sunderland AFC via Getty Images) | Sunderland AFC via Getty Images What a truly tremendous season that has just ended. Emulating Peter Reid’s 7th-placed finishes in 2000 and 2001.At the beginning of the season, most commentators and pundits were writing Sunderland off. With a few notable exceptions, the lads were almost unanimously tipped to return from whence they came. You’d think that once the club thumbed their nose at the doubters by producing a stellar campaign, the pundits would have learned their collective lessons.Oh no – not a bit of it.The bookmakers have Sunderland to finish in 17th place, with only the promoted clubs beneath them. Even that’s a bit lazy, because I fancy Hull might survive. The latest supercomputer prediction is a little better, seeing the lads finish in 16th place.Even Leeds are forecast to finish above us. On what basis? Have they not learned their lesson from the season just ended? Underestimate Sunderland at your peril. The Mags and Spurs are predicted to finish in the top ten. On what basis?Only Michael Walker in The Athletic has gone against the grain with his article entitled, “Sunderland were Premier League ready. Expect them to be Europa League ready, too”.Sunderland don’t do their transfer business in public, unlike those up the road, where the club hierarchy makes public proclamation after proclamation, claiming to be signing the next big thing.Last summer, we quietly assembled a very good team for a good price. Unlike those who shelled out £150m on three players who hardly played.Generally, the first time we heard of players signing for Sunderland was when the official team photo was released by the club. The Europa League will be a distraction. But expect Régis Le Bris to have already planned for this.My two season-ticket mates and I have already booked hotel rooms in Frankfurt between 24 – 26 May next year, just in case we get to the Europa League final.I’ll be putting a few quid on the lads with the generous odds on offer. More fool the bookies. And you thought the bookies were always right.

On This Day (2nd June 2022): Sunderland Hopeful Of Re-signing Dion Sanderson!
WIGAN, ENGLAND - APRIL 13: Dion Sanderson of Sunderland runs with the ball during the Sky Bet League One match between Wigan Athletic and Sunderland at DW Stadium on April 13, 2021 in Wigan, England. Sporting stadiums around the UK remain under strict restrictions due to the Coronavirus Pandemic as Government social distancing laws prohibit fans inside venues resulting in games being played behind closed doors. (Photo by Lewis Storey/Getty Images) | Getty Images During Lee Johnson’s tenure, much was spoken about the leakiness of the Sunderland defence and the way their exciting attacking football was sometimes counteracted by their vulnerability at the back. Many defenders came and went during the Johnson era but few made as much of an impression at the Stadium of Light as Dion Sanderson. Sanderson joined on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers for the 2020-21 season and instantly became an integral part of the side though only playing 26 games due to niggles that he consistently picked up.Sanderson was a naturally athletic defender who certainly helped in shoring up the defence and possessed all the components to play at a higher level. Soon into his loan spell, it became clear that we would need to get promoted if we wanted to keep him at the club. After our defeat to Lincoln in the play-offs, a game Sanderson missed due to injury, it was said that the defender would have loved to have stayed at the club if we were promoted.Sanderson won our Young Player of the Year award and interest was high in him from Championship clubs and whilst Wolves gave him a new contract, the defender was shipped out on loan again to Birmingham City and QPR during the 2021-22 season. After our successful promotion campaign, reports were emerging that we were going to go for the young defender again to bolster our defence upon our return to the Championship though he had many admirers after further enhancing his reputation during the previous season.According to the Northern Echo, Sanderson was Sunderland’s number one defensive target with Sheffield United also said to be keen on him. The newspaper further explained that the fact Sanderson had previously played – and enjoyed – his time at the club left the club hopeful of securing his signature on a loan or permanent deal.Sunderland’s recruitment team are also willing to consider both options, and are hoping Sanderson’s prior experience of life in the North-East will help their cause. The club accept they face a considerable battle, but there is a determination to do as much as possible in an attempt to land Sanderson, who is currently regarded as the club’s number one defensive target.Unfortunately, Sanderson’s connections to Birmingham City and given he wasn’t moving far from where he was from appeared to be a more suitable option for the defender, who signed for the Brummies in early July of 2022. Sunderland moved on to different options which saw Dan Ballard join the club from Arsenal in a move that clearly worked out for both parties! As for Sanderson, he’s never really seemed to settle anywhere, and after a lan spell at Blackburn he joined Derby on loan at the beginning of the 25/26 season, making the move permanent in January.

'Isse achha kya khelega?' Jadeja pushes for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's India debut after IPL heroics
Former India cricketer Ajay Jadeja believes 15-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has done enough to earn a place in the Indian team and said he even raised the issue with chief selector Ajit Agarkar during the IPL 2026 final.Speaking after Sooryavanshi's remarkable IPL season, Jadeja questioned what more the youngster could possibly do to prove his readiness for higher honours.“How much better can he perform? I saw the chairman and asked him, ‘Mr Chairman! When will you pick Vaibhav Sooryavanshi? If not now, then when? Irrespective of his age, how could anyone possibly bat better than this?" Jadeja said while speaking to ANI.— ANI (@ANI) The calls for Sooryavanshi's India debut have grown stronger following a season in which he dominated opposition attacks and finished as one of the standout performers of IPL 2026.The Rajasthan Royals batter scored 776 runs in 16 matches at an average of 48.50 and a strike rate of 237.30. His performances earned him the Orange Cap as the tournament's highest run-scorer.Despite Rajasthan Royals falling short of a place in the final, Sooryavanshi was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the season. He also won the Emerging Player of the Season award and collected several other honours during the end-of-season presentation ceremony. One of those awards included an SUV, although the 15-year-old will have to wait another three years before he is legally eligible to drive it.Sooryavanshi's rise has attracted attention beyond his numbers. Along with his record-breaking IPL campaign, he has become one of the most talked-about young cricketers in the country, with many former players and fans viewing him as a future India star.

Everton's groundsman retires after 40 years
Bob Lennon said he was ready to begin a "new chapter" in his life [Everton FC]After nearly four decades in a job "which felt more like a hobby", Everton Football Club's head groundsman at their former Goodison Park home has retired. Bob Lennon, 66, finished his last shift on Saturday after 38 years preparing the pitches at the Toffeemen's Bellefield training ground and the historic stadium where the men's first team played until their move to Hill Dickinson Stadium a year ago.Lennon worked with 19 managers, including five caretakers, and rubbed shoulders with some of the Blues' biggest legends. "I knew this day has been coming for the past 12 weeks," he said. "But I've got no regrets. I think it's my time to finish now."He said when his wife Carole had asked how he felt about his retirement, he replied: "It's like another chapter in your book of life".Lennon added: "This is the end of one chapter, a very big chapter mind. But as I say, tomorrow's another page, another chapter."You can't look back, you just look forwards. "It's been an absolute joy working with people here. "It's been more like a hobby than a job because you come into work whistling and it doesn't make a difference if it's pouring down with rain or snowing."Bob Lennon said his career had felt "more like a hobby" [Everton FC]Lennon said he would find himself having "banter with Colin Harvey, Howard Kendall, Terry Darracott, Paul Power and all the players, people like Ian Snodin, Neville Southall, all great characters."Of all the managers he worked with, he described Harvey as "the most demanding". "He was an absolute diamond but he was very demanding. So, so professional."Lennon had worked for Liverpool City Council as a horticulturist before joining the Bellefield groundstaff in 1988 when Harvey was manager."It was so stressful because in that environment you couldn't say 'we'll do that tomorrow' - it had to be done right then," he said. "If I'd said to Colin Harvey or Howard Kendall, 'I'll cut that pitch tomorrow' they'd say 'No lad, I want it done now. I've got multi-million pound players playing on that pitch, I want it done now.' "That's the way it was."A new fanLennon said he was proud to have only lost a handful of matches to the weather during his time at Goodison Park, and rarely because of the pitch."We lost one match against Crystal Palace because of high winds," he remembered. "The pitch was immaculate. "And there was another when the pipes at the Bullens Road End, which date back to the 1920s, had frozen solid meaning the toilets, the bars and the snack bars couldn't be opened."It was a Sky match and they'd been asking me all week if the pitch was going to be playable. I assured them it would be, and it was. But no-one saw frozen pipes causing the issue!"Now that he is retired, Lennon said he planned to spend more time in his own garden and with his grandchildren. And after nearly 40 years on the inside, he will finally be able to attend matches only as a fan."I'm looking forward to that," he said."Everton should be one of the top clubs in the country - the fans here are second to none. They are absolutely fantastic."Listen to the best of BBC Radio Merseyside on Sounds and follow BBC Merseyside on Facebook, X, and Instagram. Marc Cucurella ‘willing to leave’ Chelsea as ‘multiple clubs’ make enquiries — report
LAS ROZAS, SPAIN - MAY 31: Marc Cucurella, player of Spain National Football Team, during the press conderence of presentation of new sponsors for Spain National Football Team at the Football City (Ciudad del Futbol) on May 31, 2026, in Las Rozas, Spain. (Photo By Angel Perez Meca/Europa Press via Getty Images) | Europa Press via Getty Images Here’s a mild take for ya: of all the potential big(-ish) money exits possible this summer at Chelsea, Marc Cucurella’s would probably be the least impactful. Jorrel Hato’s ready. Cucu’s been quiet-quitting since January, but certainly since the end of March. And his performances on the pitch (especially compared to last season) have reflected that.Cucurella’s contract is also one of the more moveable assets with “just” three years left on it — a veritable blink of an eye in BlueCo-spreadsheet-land — and he’s one of the oldest members of the squad (yet never really put forth as a leader on the team). He’ll be turning 28 later this summer and while it’s unlikely that he would command £55m in the market again like we overpaid to Brighton & Hove Albion in 2022, we’ve been pretty good at negotiating outgoing transfer fees even against odds and expectations, and that could certainly be helpful for our ever-concerning bottom line.To that effect, The Athletic report that “multiple clubs” have been making enquiries with Cucurella’s camp about a potential move, with the likes of Barcelona, Atlético Madrid, Real Madrid, and Manchester City offered as examples of teams with reasonable motivations to maybe do so. Cucu himself is said to be “willing to leave […] after a frustrating season” while Chelsea apparently “would not block his departure” if we got an right offer that matched our valuation. There’s no word on what that number might be however. The report adds that Xabi Alonso has touched base with Cucurella and is aware of the situation. So, let’s see if any of these teams linked makes an actual move. Multiple clubs have been in touch with people working on behalf of Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella about a possible summer move.Sources briefed on the matter — who spoke under condition of anonymity, like others in this article, to protect relationships — say he is willing to leave… pic.twitter.com/81kO6zNwra— The Athletic | Football (@TheAthleticFC) June 1, 2026

Mason Greenwood: Tug of war erupts for former United starlet
Mason Greenwood: Tug of war erupts for former United starlet With Manchester United set to return to the Champions League after a two-season hiatus, INEOS have massive plans in the transfer market. It is well known that a midfield revamp is in the works, but the Red Devils are also looking at strengthening at the back and out wide. And for all this to pan out, the co-owners will need to sell well with the futures of several stars up in the air.In recent years, the 20-time English league champions have inserted smart sell-on clauses into deals, which would net them millions in the future.Mason Greenwood set to depart MarseilleOne such clause could come into effect this summer, with the future of Mason Greenwood the subject of speculation in France. The Carrington graduate secured a £26.6 million move to Olympique Marseille, but with their manager Roberto De Zerbi leaving for Tottenham Hotspur, the Englishman is also keen to leave for pastures new. There is interest from within the Premier League and Italy, and now, the BBC have reported that Fenerbahce have joined the race for the 24-year-old.Interestingly, both of Fenerbahce’s presidential candidates want to sign the former United wonderkid. Despite a goal-laden Ligue 1 spell, Marseille are also open to a sale.Fenerbahce presidential candidates fighting over Mason GreenwoodFenerbahce will not find it difficult to agree personal terms with the England international, but a fee has not been mentioned in the report.“Mason Greenwood is the top transfer target for Fenerbahce’s two presidential candidates. The former Manchester United and England forward has had a difficult few months at Marseille.“Their new sporting director Gregory Lorenzi said last week the club was willing to listen to offers for Greenwood, who has three years remaining on the five-year deal he signed when he left United on a permanent basis in July 2024.“Former president Aziz Yildirim is vying with Hakan Safi for the club presidency of the Turkish club, with an announcement due on Sunday. It is not anticipated personal terms would be a problem in trying to sign Greenwood.”United will be watching proceedings with interest, as they are entitled to a 50 per cent share of the profits of a future sale, which means they will earn millions in case of a big-money move.Feature image Juan Manuel Serrano Arce via Getty Imagesonline pollsThe Peoples Person has been one of the world’s leading Man United news sites for over a decade. The Virat effect: RCB coach hails Kohli's impact in team after IPL title defence
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) head coach Andy Flower has praised Virat Kohli for the standards he sets within the team, saying the former captain's hunger and discipline continue to inspire everyone in the dressing room after RCB defended their IPL title with a five-wicket win over Gujarat Titans in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium.Kohli played a key role in the title win, remaining unbeaten on 75 off 42 balls with nine fours and three sixes as RCB chased down 156. He also reached his half-century in 25 balls, the fastest fifty of his IPL career.Speaking after the triumph, Flower said Kohli's attitude has a major influence on the squad.“You asked about Virat’s hunger and how that affects him. When I was in the dressing room last night after the game, I mentioned it actually. His hunger and drive it’s genuinely inspiring. Even for older blokes like me, seeing someone as hungry and driven, as disciplined and as ambitious as he still is, it’s wonderful to witness. And we’re very lucky to have him in the dressing room," Flower said in a virtual press conference on Monday, as quoted by news agency IANS.“He sets certain standards, like standards of intensity in the field, for instance, that means that anyone falling below those is going to stand out like a sore thumb. So we don’t need coaches driving intensity on standards in the field, for instance, because he’s living it and doing it. And everyone else has to raise their games to get anywhere near it.”Flower also highlighted Kohli's passion for batting and the example he provides during training sessions.“He works hard at his game, but you can see that he loves it as well. He loves batting. He loves hitting a ball. He loves the feeling of the ball meeting the middle of the bat. I would imagine the craft and mastery that he feels when he’s got a bat in his hands. Again, those standards are easy for people in our training sessions to see, and certainly it just helps everyone head in the right direction.”RCB captain Rajat Patidar also credited Kohli for helping him develop as a leader since taking charge of the franchise ahead of the 2025 season.“Regarding Virat bhai, as I said in many press conferences and interviews, his presence makes a lot of difference. For me, it's great learning. Whenever I’m around him on the field and off the field, I always notice him. I don’t speak much, but I always notice him.“But whenever I have some kind of doubts regarding the leadership role or taking any decision, I always go to Virat bhai. For me, it’s a great opportunity to learn from the best and the greats of cricket. So, their ideas, inputs, and experience are definitely helping me a lot to grow in my new leadership role.”Under Patidar, RCB have now won back-to-back IPL titles. The skipper also enjoyed a strong season with the bat, scoring 501 runs at a strike rate of 192.69, including an unbeaten 93 in Qualifier 1.

Sean Manaea earned another turn in Mets' rotation with best outing of season to this point
It was a frustrating start to the season for Sean Manaea. The left-hander struggled to find his velocity during spring training and he ended up landing in more of a mop-up role out of the Mets’ bullpen early on. Instead of putting his head down, Manaea keep on grinding. He put in a ton of work with pitching coach Justin Willard, and is finally starting to see all of that paying off. The veteran has found more success with an uptick in velocity over his past few outings, leading to him receiving an opportunity in the Mets’ starting rotation. “You have to give him credit,” Carlos Mendoza said. “When it was hard for him he was basically the last guy out of the bullpen and he never put his head down -- you saw him doing long toss and all of the drills we put him through.“When you see the velo now starting to come up, we know the strike-showing ability, but now the cutter and the sweeper throwing strikes -- that’s the guy that we saw in 2024.”And that’s the guy that the Mets saw on Monday night, as well.Manaea was absolutely spectacular serving as the bulk reliever for the first time this season, piecing together his best and longest outing to this point. He lost a left-on-left matchup with 20-year-old Colt Emerson, allowing a solo homer to right in the bottom of the third, but otherwise cruised his way through Seattle's lineup. The southpaw gave up just one other baserunner on a walk and struck out four batters over 5.0 innings. Manaea’s velocity was up a couple of ticks from his season-averages again, and he's now held his opponent to just one run in three straight appearances. “I’ve just been taking things day-by-day,” he said. “Just building each day and coming in with a plan, and slowly but surely I’ve just been feeling really good on the mound.”It remains to be seen if it’ll be as a straight starter or bulk reliever again, but Manaea is in line to take another turn in the rotation the next time around.

Report: Padres Prospect Bowen Being Called Up for MLB Debut
The San Diego Padres are shaking up their roster a bit with a slugging outfielder. According to Kiley McDaniel of ESPN, Jase Bowen is joining the Friars in Philadelphia ahead of their upcoming series against the Phillies. San Diego has no room on their roster, so a corresponding move will have to be made. It was speculated that Bowen would be called up when Jackson Merrillinjured his back, but the call never came.Bowen has spent the season demolishing baseballs in Triple-A. He almost forced himself onto the Opening Day roster after a stellar spring training, but was edged out by a crowded bench picture. The Padres’ offense has had a difficult time scoring runs lately. A spark like this might be exactly what the club needs to get going.OF Jase Bowen has been called up by the Padres, per source. He was a 2019 11th round pick from an Ohio high school that’s now set to make his big league debut.Bowen has hit 13 HR and posted a .962 OPS in AAA in his first season for the Padres after six years with the Pirates.— Kiley McDaniel (@kileymcd) June 1, 2026Report: Padres Calling Up Outfield Prospect Jase BowenStuck in Baseball LimboFor six years, Bowen was stuck in the Pittsburgh Pirates minor league system, barely treading water offensively. From 2019-2024, the outfielder never hit better than .256 in a single season. Bowen’s OPS marks weren’t much better, with his highest during that time being an average .794.Before 2025, the highest level of play Bowen had seen was Double-A in ’24. He slashed .241/.298/.366 with 10 homers for the Altoona Curve (the Pirates’ Double-A team). Then something interesting happened in ’25. He was demoted to Single-A and started the season with the Bradenton Marauders. He ended the year with the Triple-A club and batted .272/.353/.449 with his first career OPS above .800.It was a banner year for Bowen. He decided to elect free agency in the offseason to pursue an opportunity with another club. That opportunity came knocking in a minor league contract with the Padres and a non-roster invite to Spring Training. Bowen delivered immediately.A Spring Training for the AgesBowen played in 25 of the Padres’ 31 Cactus League games. He raked during that time, batting .296/.333/.630 with four home runs. Bowen also flashed the leather with a 1.000 fielding percentage in 27 total chances across all three outfield positions.Unfortunately, a crowded and talented bench forced Bowen off the roster. The likes of pleasant surprise Miguel Andujar, Nick Castellanos, Ty France, and Bryce Johnson were all tried and tested big-league players. Bowen had yet to make his debut. That made it unlikely he would be selected to the Opening Day roster, but his potential was tantalizing.Making His Case for a Roster SpotBowen has spent his season in the minors proving the Padres wrong for not calling him up sooner. Across 49 games in Triple-A, he is batting .292/.362/.600 with a .962 OPS and a ridiculous 13 home runs. Those numbers rank Bowen second in the Pacific Coast League in home runs, third in slugging percentage, and seventh in OPS.Anotha one ☝️Jase Bowen launches his second homer of the night pic.twitter.com/CGjpzeS5YU— El Paso Chihuahuas (@epchihuahuas) May 9, 2026Not only that, but Bowen’s outfield defense has been spectacular. He’s made just two errors out of 93 total chances (384 1/3 innings). The majority of that time has come in center field, with 35 of his 49 games coming at the position. Bowen made just one error across 300 1/3 innings at the position this season. The Padres’ offense has massively struggled this season, with inconsistent spurts of power followed by long stretches of mediocrity. They’ve still managed to win games, but have endured a brutal stretch recently that included their first sweep of the season at the hands of the Phillies. Bowen could very well be exactly what the Padres need to push them forward. The likeliest corresponding move is for San Diego to designate Johnson for assignment. The outfielder is out of minor league options and would have to be DFA’d in order to make it to Triple-A El Paso. Johnson has always been considered a glove-first bench player, with a career .233 batting average. The club has yet to announce the move, but will likely do so ahead of their series opener in Philly on Tuesday. Main Photo Credit: © Rick Scuteri-Imagn Images

Rockies 9, Angels 8: Wild ride propels Rockies to comeback win
Jun 1, 2026; Anaheim, California, USA; Colorado Rockies catcher Hunter Goodman (15) congratulates pitcher Antonio Senzatela (49) after earning a win in the ninth inning against the Los Angeles Angels at Angel Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Jayne Kamin-Oncea-Imagn Images | Jayne Kamin-Oncea-Imagn Images The stats were bonkers in this one. The Rockies drew 10 walks and added two more free passes through hit by pitches, which should lead to numerous runs. On defense, the Rockies committed four fielding errors, which should result in a loss. When it comes to pitching, Kyle Freeland gave up a grand slam to Jose Siri. Through it all, the Rockies persisted, rallying for two comebacks — including a five-run eighth inning — to pull out a hard-to-believe win on Monday night. With the game tied 8-8, the Rockies had to dial up another comeback in the ninth. It was small, but mighty enough to win as Kyle Karros singled, Jake McCarthy doubled and TJ Rumfield hit a sac fly to drive in the winning run.Team effort 🤝 pic.twitter.com/eRiiQt5ear— Colorado Rockies (@Rockies) June 2, 2026“That was not a normal game. They gave 12 free passes. We kicked the ball a bunch tonight and threw it around sloppily, but somebody’s got to win that game,” said Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer. “I thought the boys showed incredible resilience, bouncing back multiple times, just sticking with it and throwing up really good at-bats all night long, despite the horrendous defense.”Big hits in the 8thAfter the big hits had been elusive all game, they finally came in the eighth inning for the Rockies. Sterlin Thompson and Kyle Karros led off the frame with back-to-back doubles. When Thompson scored, it cut the Angels lead to 6-4. Jake McCarthy followed with a walk and Tyler Freeman singled to score Karros to cut L.A’s lead to 6-5. That’s when Hunter Goodman handled things, hitting his 14th homer of the year and putting the Rockies up 8-6.HUNTER GOODMAN🤯 pic.twitter.com/sfo7v17vvD— Colorado Rockies (@Rockies) June 2, 2026The Rockies hit around in the inning, which marked the 10th time this season when the Rockies scored five or more runs.“We’ve had some good innings this year, but that was a big one,” Schaeffer said. The Rockies seven, eight and nine hitters, Edouard Julien, Thompson and Karros, combined to draw three walks, produce four hits score three runs and drive in two. That helped McCarthy add more of a spark in the leadoff spot as the outfielder homered, doubled, scored two runs and walked twice.“Jake was awesome,” Schaeffer said. “It makes such a difference when the bottom of the lineup gets on base like that.” Nothing is easyUnfortunately for the Rockies, Jaden Hill wasn’t at his best in the bottom of the eighth. The reliever gave up a leadoff walk and then a single to bring the go-ahead run to the plate. With only recording one out, Hill was pulled for Antonio Senzatela. He gave up a triple to Jorge Soler, which tied the game, but then he got out of the inning. In the bottom of the ninth, Senzatela got one out on one pitch, but then gave up a single. Siri then hit a groundball to Ezequiel Tovar, who touched second and gunned the ball to first for a double play. The Angels challenged the out on speedy Siri, but the ruling on the field was confirmed and Senzatela earned the win to improve to 5-0 (even though he also got the blown save).View LinkIt ain’t grandDespite giving up two singles and a long fly ball to the warning track, Kyle Freeland made it through the first two innings with a clean sheet. When he gave up back-to-back singles to Donovan Walton and Jorge Soler to lead off the third, it was a sign of a rough inning to come. Even though he retired the next two batters via two lineouts, including Mike Trout, Jo Adell put the Angels on the board with an RBI single to cut the Rockies lead to 2-1.Oswald Peraza kept the rally going with an infield hit to load the bases, which teed up a grand slam Jose Siri. In one frame, the Rockies went from up 2-0, to trailing 5-2.Freeland bounced back in the fourth with a three-up, three-down inning that was capped off with a Trout strikeout. Outside of the satisfaction of striking out one of the best hitters in baseball, the K marked Freeland’s 986th career strikeout, which moved him into second place above Jorge De La Rosa on the all-time Colorado franchise list. He now trails only Germán Márquez’s 1,069. Freeland finished the day with four strikeouts (987), but gave up six runs (five earned), on seven hits with one walk in 5.2 innings. As proof of the Freeland’s struggles this season, the outing dropped Freeland’s ERA from 8.08 to 8.06. However, Schaeffer was still impressed with Freeland’s outing.“I thought Free threw the ball well. He maintained his velocity all day, put the ball where he wanted, and the changeup was really working,” said Schaeffer, who blamed the bad defense for too much of the scoring. “He competed against nine right-handers, which is hard to do. Kudos to him.
