SPORTS.YAHOO.COMThousands of fans get chance to see Team USA practice in Irvine ahead of first World Cup gameThe start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup is just a few days away at SoFi Stadium, and the U.S. Men's National Team has arrived in Southern California. They were on the pitch at Great Park in Irvine on Monday, practicing for their opening round match against Paraguay. There was no trophy or title on the line, but you wouldn't know that from the atmosphere.Approximately 5,500 fans showed up to the park to watch Monday's practice after winning tickets in a lottery system."In my backyard! I've got my team in my backyard!" said Irvine resident Amir Aftabi."I'm lucky I'm going to be going to two games, but the tickets were really expensive, so I know for a lot of people, to be able to be here and even see the team play or train one time is such a great privilege," said Kevin Shirka from Mission Viejo.Monday's practice at Great Park was the only practice open to the public, so the next time fans will get a chance to see the team will be during their first game on Friday in Inglewood.Hundreds of employees from the city of Irvine have been preparing for this day.RELATED: World Cup 2026: Large-scale security operation planned for matches at SoFi StadiumAs thousands of soccer fans prepare for the World Cup games in Southern California, officials are outlining efforts to keep attendees safe.Making the facility the team's home away from home has been years in the making. Irvine was selected by FIFA, and for the past couple of years, the Great Park and the city of Irvine were doing tours with different countries, but it wasn't until January of 2026 that they found out the U.S. Men's Soccer team had picked them."It's a terrific opportunity, of course, for all of us, and it's, I think, emblematic of what it means to live together in a sense of community and for the moment, at least, all be on the same team, pulling in the same direction. So it's very meaningful for our community," said Irvine Mayor Larry Agran.Eyewitness News was told that more than 32,000 people entered the lottery system to try to snag two tickets."It's just like a once-in-a-lifetime experience. We didn't secure tickets at the World Cup. This is the next best thing," said Yorba Linda resident Angela Ortiz. "We're local Orange Countyans, so to be able to come here and experience it, it's going to be so fun.""This will probably be the closest I'll ever get to seeing the USMT, you know, with the FIFA prices and tickets, so it's really exciting," said Mili Dimas from Lakewood. The basecamp now becomes the team's home away from home for the next few weeks, and players say the support shown on day one will set the tone for the tournament."We get to train in an actual stadium with a good pitch. The support that we just pulled up to with all the kids out there is amazing. But listen, you want to feel like you have a good home base, right? You have a place that you can not have to worry about all the little details off the field. Everything's been taken care of for us," said Tim Ream, the captain of the U.S. Men's National Team. "This is a once-in-a-career opportunity, and with that comes more expectations and more pressure, but at the same time, we have to enjoy it. There's nobody putting more pressure and more expectation on us than ourselves.""You know, to be in a position to train in front of these people today, and hopefully play on Friday in front of all the fans and inspire them is such a unique opportunity, and one that none of us take for granted," said goalkeeper Matt Freese.Carlos Sanchez is a local soccer coach in Orange County and says this rare opportunity will inspire young players with big dreams."Getting this youth to come out and see these guys train is such an amazing experience for them, and for me as a coach, to see these men come out here and represent us. I think they're going to do extremely well this year. And I'm looking forward to it," Sanchez said.In addition to the championship soccer stadium at Great Park, there are two other fields and a world-class gym that was built for the team.SEE ALSO: How hot conditions could impact the World Cup0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 40 Просмотры 0 предпросмотр

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMDonald Trump booed by the crowd during the anthem prior to Game 3 of the NBA FinalsDonald Trump was booed loudly by fans inside Madison Square Garden when he was shown on video screens during the national anthem as he became the first sitting president to attend an NBA Finals game.Chants of “U-S-A! U-S-A!” echoed through the arena as Avery Wilson sang “The Star-Spangled Banner,” but they they gave way to boos moments later as Trump was displayed on the jumbo screens giving a military salute. The jeers ended when the U.S. flag followed him on the screens, and fans cheered when New York Knicks players were shown. Mentions of the San Antonio Spurs also elicited vociferous boos.Trump watched Game 3 from Knicks owner James Dolan’s suite, along with granddaughter Kai, personal adviser Boris Epshteyn and Cabinet secretaries Lee Zeldin, Sean Duffy and Doug Burgum. He sat next to Dolan for the first quarter and spent part of the second talking to NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and Republican gubernatorial hopeful Bruce Blakeman.Trump’s Marine One helicopter flew from his home in New Jersey and landed near Wall Street before his motorcade made its way up through Manhattan and to the arena roughly an hour before tipoff. He encountered a handful of people making rude gestures, and outside the area, one group held signs saying “Trump must go.”He settled into Dolan’s suite shortly afterward.During the afternoon before Trump’s arrival, the New York Police Department and the U.S. Secret Service set up a large perimeter surrounding Madison Square Garden. Fans lined up to get inside the arena more than four hours before tipoff, in a scene more closely resembling New Year’s Eve in Times Square than the usual leadup to a basketball game. They were required to provide a ticket or pass to get past various checkpoints, along with going through a Transportation Security Administration-style magnetometer. Secret Service personnel and police were positioned at every corner and in large numbers. Daily commuters, tourists visiting Manhattan and fans were all confounded at various times as they tried to maneuver the security.New Yorkers forced to adjustAfter traveling from his home in Florida for the game, Knicks fan Greg Weldon said the main inconvenience faced so far has been the lack of information.“We’ve asked so many cops, secret service, guys with machine guns, what to do, where should we go,” he said. “Nobody knows.”Knicks coach Mike Brown and Spurs counterpart Mitch Johnson downplayed any concept of being inconvenienced by the closures and enhanced security because of Trump.“There’s a lot going on, and I’d much rather be a part of it than not,” Johnson said. With security stepped up, a watch party outside was canceled, and ticket-holders were not allowed to bring bags inside the Garden. Fans had gathered near the arena to watch games during this playoff run, during which the Knicks have won 13 games in a row to reach the final for the first time since 1999 and move two victories from their first NBA title since 1973.“We are looking forward to bringing back watch parties for Game 4,” Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at a news conference Monday. “But I think New Yorkers are used to presidents coming to town, and they understand that that generally means lockdowns of areas and that’s what you’re going to see tonight at the Garden.”Incidents heighten attention to Trump’s securityThis is the latest major sporting event Trump has attended during his time as president, and the security measures have created major hassles for fans.Thousands of fans missed the start of last year’s U.S. Open men’s singles final between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner because of lengthy security lines. Even though the U.S. Tennis Association pushed back the start of the match by a half-hour, many fans still couldn’t get in because added measures meant that they had to go through screening not only when they arrived at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center but again in front of the steps into Arthur Ashe Stadium, where Trump watched from a suite.Federal law enforcement officials have been reexamining Trump’s security in light of three incidents in the past two years: a shooting at a 2024 rally in Butler, Pennsylvania; the discovery of a man armed with a rifle as Trump played golf in West Palm Beach, Florida, later that year; and the recent shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner.Asked Sunday his thoughts on Trump attending, Knicks center Mitchell Robinson said: “Cool, I guess. We can still get out there and play (no matter) who’s here and who’s not.”Mayor Zohran Mamdani and other dignitaries were also at the game, as were Yankees Hall of Famer Derek Jeter and two-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback Eli Manning of the Giants. It was already hard enough for Knicks fans to get inside Madison Square Garden because of astronomical ticket prices. The get-in price for a ticket is higher than the average cost of monthly rent in New York, surging over $5,000.The best seats were listed for tens of thousands of dollars. Mamdani said he bought his ticket, which he said was standing-room-only, for about $1,000 directly from Madison Square Garden. The difficulty of seeing the game in-person has prompted fans to crowd bars, streets and watch parties all over the city. The watch party near the Garden has become a major event all through the playoffs, but with Trump attending, that event was moved a few blocks away outside the security perimeter, at Bryant Park.“We improvise,” said Knicks guard Jose Alvarado, who is a New York native. “We’re New Yorkers. We’re going to find a way to watch a game, and that’s what we’re doing.”___AP Basketball Writer Brian Mahoney contributed to this report.___AP NBA: https://apnews.com/hub/NBA[DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks][SIGN UP: WSB-TV Daily Headlines Newsletter]0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 40 Просмотры 0 предпросмотр

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMBig 12 athletic directors to discuss impact of ruling reinstating Texas Tech QB Brendan SorsbyCINCINNATI, OHIO - NOVEMBER 15: Brendan Sorsby #2 of the Cincinnati Bearcats throws a pass during the fourth quarter against the Arizona Wildcats at Nippert Stadium on November 15, 2025 in Cincinnati, Ohio. (Photo by Dylan Buell/Getty Images) | Getty Images The ever-changing landscape of college athletics continues to get altered by legal rulings, and the latest one has a chance to directly impact Arizona teams’ upcoming schedules.A judge in Texas ruled Monday that Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby can play this season despite being caught betting on college football, including on his own team when he was a freshman at Indiana. Sorsby, who transferred from Cincinnati in the winter, had been banned by the NCAA for his sports betting but Judge Ken Curry of Texas’ 99th District Court issued a temporary injunction.Curry, a Texas Tech graduate whose courtroom is in Lubbock, ruled that Sorsby would “suffer a probable, imminent and irreparable injury” if not allowed to play for the Red Raiders, who reportedly are paying him $5 million for the 2026 season. The NCAA has filed an “accelerated appeal,” according to The Athletic, with the Court of Appeals for the Seventh District of Texas. All four judges on that panel graduated from Texas Tech.In the immediate fallout after the judge’s ruling, some schools—Georgia and Nebraska—have publicly announced they won’t schedule Tech for future games. But that might just be the start of a boycott.According to ESPN, the Big Ten is expected to discuss in the upcoming days a leaguewide mandate not to schedule Texas Tech, while the Big 12’s athletic directors are set to hold a conference call Tuesday to discuss the issue. And the ADs from Kansas State and TCU told ESPN there has been “informal chatter” within the league about its own schools not playing Tech, though the likelihood of that seems small.Arizona is set to play Tech at least once in nearly every team sport during the 2026-27 season, with football making a visit to Lubbock on Halloween. Volleyball visits Tech a week later, while both men’s and women’s basketball will face the Red Raiders at least once during Big 12 play and the UA baseball and softball teams could also have games on their to-be-released schedules in the spring.0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 40 Просмотры 0 предпросмотр

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMEkitike And Isak Hold The Key To Iraola’s Liverpool SuccessLIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - OCTOBER 19: Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak of Liverpool during the Premier League match between Liverpool and Manchester United at Anfield on October 19, 2025 in Liverpool, England. (Photo by Robbie Jay Barratt - AMA/Getty Images)Getty ImagesAndoni Iraola has a lot to consider before the start of the 2026/27 season. Now Liverpool manager following his appointment by the Anfield club, Iraola has been trusted with imposing a new identity on a team that lost one over the course of the 2025/26 campaign under Arne Slot. He will face a number of challenges. Liverpool’s squad is talented, but it’s unbalanced. While the Merseyside outfit spent over $250m signing a number of elite-level players last summer, not many of them fit into Slot’s team. This is where Iraola must offer something different. The Spaniard needs to think about the overall set-up of his team.First and foremost, he must envisage how Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak could play together in the attacking third. Both strikers joined Liverpool last summer, but experienced contrasting fortunes in their first season there. While Ekitike flourished, Isak struggled for any sort of form and fitness. LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - JUNE 04: (THE SUN OUT, THE SUN ON SUNDAY OUT) Andoni Iraola new manager of Liverpool Football Club at Anfield on June 04, 2026 in Liverpool, England. (Photo by Andrew Powell/Liverpool FC via Getty Images)Liverpool FC via Getty ImagesThat Liverpool spent so much money on two forwards who play the position in a similar way in the same transfer window was confusing from the start. The Reds needed a new number nine, but Ekitike and Isak appeared incompatible as a pairing in Slot’s 4-2-3-1 system. There was never any sign of a partnership,It’s possible Iraola could deploy Ekitike on the left wing with Isak through the middle as a centre forward. Alternatively, Liverpool could use them as a front two, although this would require the width to come from wing backs. It would also put some pressure on the midfield to protect the backline against the ball. And yet the upside of using Ekitike and Isak as a strike partnership could be huge for Liverpool. On their day, both forwards are among the most dangerous in the Premier League and so this could supercharge the Liverpool attack now that Mohamed Salah has departed the club.NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE, ENGLAND - AUGUST 25: (THE SUN OUT, THE SUN ON SUNDAY OUT) Hugo Ekitike of Liverpool celebrates scoring his team's second goal during the Premier League match between Newcastle United and Liverpool at St James' Park on August 25, 2025 in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. (Photo by Liverpool FC/Liverpool FC via Getty Images)Liverpool FC via Getty ImagesIraola has some issues to resolve in the transfer market. Liverpool need at least one new centre back after Ibrahima Konate decided to leave at the end of his contract. Andy Robertson’s exit also means a new left back is required. Many supporters believe Liverpool should be in the market for a central midfielder. This summer marks the start of something new for Liverpool, but its new manager is charged with making more of the same squad that didn’t work for Slot in his final season at the helm. Ekitike and Isak could hold the key to the former Bournemouth boss being successful on Merseyside. This article was originally published on Forbes.com0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 40 Просмотры 0 предпросмотр

SPORTS.YAHOO.COM“Entered A Really Complicated Place”: Mike Greenberg Sounds Off On Sports Betting Debate After Brendan Sorsby’s NCAA VictoryBrendan Sorsby looks to throw during the Texas Tech football team's spring game © Imagn ImagesTexas Tech Red Raiders quarterback Brendan Sorsby was granted an injunction by a judge in Texas on Monday. He is now allowed to play for the Red Raiders in the 2026 season and won’t enter the NFL supplemental draft.Sorsby was deemed ineligible for college football by the NCAA after it was discovered that he had bet around $90,000 on college and pro sports over the last four years. He had also placed bets on the Indiana Hoosiers’ games during his freshman year at that school. After the NCAA declared him ineligible, many thought that Sorsby would enter the NFL through the supplemental draft. However, Sorsby decided to hire lawyer Jeffrey Kessler to fight his case against the NCAA. Kessler has had a brilliant track record in cases against the NCAA.Insiders and experts believe that Sorsby being eligible for another season in college football will have an adverse effect. On “The Pat McAfee Show,” ESPN’s Mike Greenberg discussed what the development could mean for college sports’ future.“We have entered a really, really complicated place,” he said.Greenberg said that he has a personal history with sports gambling. When he started hosting talk shows in Chicago, one of the things he campaigned for was the legalization of sports gambling. His idea was that since gambling was already prevalent, it was better to give it a legal structure and make it taxable.“With the direct connections that sports teams have with these (apps and prediction markets) … comes what is obviously a very slippery slope because it is very difficult … out of one side of your mouth to say you must stay away from this, this is the worst thing you could possibly do, and on the other side, say make sure you check out the parlay that we have right now available for new customers only,” he said.Greenberg believes that the sports world is in a complicated situation with the involvement of sports gambling and the prevention of athletes from engaging in the activity.Pete Thamel on the Impact of Brendan Sorsby’s CaseESPN’s Pete Thamel also discussed the reactions he has seen in the world of college football on Pat McAfee’s show.“This is certainly an unprecedented day in the history of college sports,” Thamel said. “And I don’t want to sound overdramatic here, but gambling has always been a thick red line and … Brendan Sorsby, who admitted to placing thousands of bets for $90,000, including 40 bets on his own team (Indiana).”“The fact that he has been legally cleared to play college football this season at Texas Tech is simply something that we’ve never seen before.”Thamel revealed that a Big 12 athletic director texted him after the ruling and said, “We’ve lost our soul today.” Thamel said that gambling always carried significant consequences for athletes, but now we’ll see an athlete who admitted to gambling play for a program next season.Read More:Lane Kiffin Makes Huge Recruiting Strides With Elite 2027 Edge’s Commitment‘Coach Prime Made Me A Priority’ — 4-Star TE Gavin Mueller Explains Why He’s Joining Deion Sanders, ColoradoCollege Sports Network has you covered with the latest news, analysis, insights, and trending stories in college football, men’s college basketball, women’s college basketball, and college baseball!0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 40 Просмотры 0 предпросмотр

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMSomali referee axed from World Cup after being denied entry to USSomali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan has been dropped from the World Cup's referees roster after being denied entry to the United States (Khaled DESOUKI)Award-winning Somali referee Omar Artan has been dropped from officiating at the World Cup after being barred from entering the United States, world football's governing body FIFA said on Monday.A FIFA spokesperson confirmed in a statement that Artan, who was refused entry to the US after arriving at Miami International Airport on Saturday, would play no part in the World Cup.Artan would have been the first Somali to referee at a World Cup."FIFA can confirm that match official Omar Abdulkadir Artan will be unable to train and officiate at the FIFA World Cup 2026 after he was denied entry into the United States," the spokesperson told AFP.FIFA emphasized that it was powerless to influence the decision, which it said was the sole preserve of tournament co-hosts the United States."FIFA is not involved in host country immigration processes, including visa adjudications, and has been informed by authorities that Mr Artan's status will not be changed at present," the spokesperson said."In line with previous FIFA events, a host government ultimately determines who receives a visa and who is admitted into their country."A spokesperson for United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said Artan was denied entry following a routine inspection."During processing, the traveler underwent additional inspection, a routine part of CBP's inspection process when officers need to verify information or determine admissibility," the CBP spokesperson said."Following inspection, the traveler, a referee for the FIFA World Cup, was determined to be inadmissible due to vetting concerns and was denied entry."Somalia is one of several countries on a travel ban list introduced by President Donald Trump's administration as part of a broader immigration crackdown. In a statement to AFP, Artan said he wanted to concentrate on the future."Despite the circumstances I am in a positive mood and I am focused on the next challenges in my refereeing career," he said."I want to thank the football family for their messages and wish my colleagues all the best success during the World Cup and I look forward to joining them again in future competitions."- 'Inspiration' -A government adviser in Mogadishu told AFP earlier Monday that Artan had a valid visa for the US.The tournament kicks off on Thursday."Omar Artan is among Africa's most respected referees and deserves the support of the entire football community," Ciise Aden Abshir, a senior adviser to Somalia's Ministry of Youth and Sports and a former national team captain, said.Abshir said Artan flew back to Istanbul after being refused entry in Miami."Denying him entry to the United States and preventing him from officiating scheduled matches harms not only him personally but also undermines football's commitment to fairness, merit, and the spirit of fair play," Abshir added. Artan was among the 52 referees announced by FIFA for the World Cup finals in Canada, Mexico and the United States. He has been officiating in the Somali national football league championships since he became a FIFA referee in 2018, and refereed in the most recent edition of the Africa Cup of Nations. In 2025 he was named by the Confederation of African Football as men's referee of the year.Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud praised Artan in April after he made history as the first Somali to be selected to officiate at the World Cup finals."I commend the effort, professionalism, and integrity shown by referee Omar, as he has become a symbol of inspiration for the new generation of Somalis," said Mohamud.bur/rcw/gj/pst/dh0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 40 Просмотры 0 предпросмотр

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMCaitlin Clark celebrating with Fever teammates dispels conspiracies of team frictionThe Indiana Fever gritted out perhaps their hardest-fought win of the season so far against the hosting Washington Mystics on Monday night. The basket that sealed it? A thrilling logo 3-pointer from superstar Caitlin Clark. After the game, her Fever teammates mobbed Clark in celebration... which should, y'know, put a bit of a damper on the idea that there's some sort of simmering tension between Clark and her teammates. That imagined, baseless discourse is part of many conspiratorial threads surrounding the Fever and Clark this season, some unnecessarily defensive of Clark and aggressive toward the Fever organization and some unnecessarily critical of Clark and speculative of the bond she has with her teammates and coaches. Well, as a good coach would say, the tape doesn't lie. LOOK AT THIS TEAM CELEBRATE THEIR PSYCHO, CAITLIN 🥹🔥 pic.twitter.com/AUoqTXeWZd— allison (@_girltalk) June 9, 2026Most all professional sports teams have moments of tension between players and coaches, players and players, you name it. The Fever are no different. However, moments like this put it all in perspective. These Fever players all seem pretty happy to be playing with Clark and each other; the speculative fan theories can't dispute real life. Perhaps they can exist in a nuanced reality that embraces the messiness of the human condition? Hot takes can't. Clark can certainly chill out sometimes; it's a good area of improvement. However, it doesn't look like she's a locker room pariah who cant' get along with her teammates... far from it. Maybe, just maybe, she's a flawed human like all of us who is subject to some really unhelpful commentary by people trying to force a baseless narrative. It comes from her fans; it comes from her critics. Maybe it'd be better to let the athletes and coaches tell us what's going on instead of Monday morning quarterbacking from social media on what a context-free clip might mean. You can feel how you wish about Clark; she's a major athlete. That's how it works. However, let's keep the discourse rooted in reality, on the actual basketball and what happens on the court. We'd all be better off... seriously. Or would it be wiser for Celtics President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens and the rest of the Boston front office to hit a couple of singles when it comes to trades or free agent signings? There appears to be a stark divide between what different camps of fans and analysts want the team to do this offseason in the wake of a first round exit at the hands of the Philadelphia 76ers in the 2026 NBA Eastern Conference Playoffs. Some say that early exit points to the need for a major change. Meanwhile, others see it as bad luck and some ill-timed slumps with key players that do not suggest major moves are in order. The folks behind the "WEEI Boston Sports Original" YouTube channel put together a clip from their "Greg Hill Show" taking a look at that debate. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMFormer kicker Connor Mantelli designs Bemidji State's 100th season logoJun. 8—BEMIDJI — During the offseason, the Bemidji State football team needed an anniversary logo for its upcoming 100th season and enlisted one of its players to make it.Out of all the players, of course, it was the kicker who stepped up.Connor Mantelli, who was the primary kicker for BSU in 2024 and 2025, designed an anniversary logo for the team's upcoming 100th season during the offseason. As a business administration major, Mantelli had dabbled in design in the past, starting a small cleat and shoe customization business while growing up in Colorado. So when the Beavers needed a 100th season logo, they asked if he would take a shot at designing it."I've always just been interested in art," Mantelli said, "and I kind of thought that was a path I could take once I was done with school and football."He started the design process by doing some research on what other teams have done with their anniversary logos. Many teams have recently celebrated their 100th season, including NSIC foes Augustana in 2022 and Minnesota State Moorhead in 2018.Above all, Mantelli wanted to keep things simple."In the back of my head, I thought the whole time about something that would look good on a shirt, or as a patch on a jersey, or on a hat," he said. "So I came to the conclusion, something simple would be better — didn't want a bunch of crazy things going on."Mantelli included a football, yardlines and the Beaver logo into the design, along with "100 seasons of Beaver football."BSU emphasizes that it will be celebrating its 100th season, not its 100th year. Since the team didn't have a 2020 season due to COVID, 2026 will be the 100th season, despite it being the 101st year of the program.Everything was looking good, but Mantelli wanted to include something else to make it feel more Bemidji. What says that more than pine trees? With that, the logo was complete and unveiled on social media in February."I wanted it to be pretty simple, but still get a lot of words and meaning across, which I think I portrayed pretty well," he said. "(Although) I might be a little biased."When the logo was posted on social media, he got many comments from former teammates praising him for his work."The support was awesome when the Instagram account posted it and made it their profile picture," Mantelli said. "I heard from a bunch of old teammates, and even teammates from back in high school. (Even) people that I haven't really talked to that much the past few years reached out saying how cool it was and how honored I should be to have that opportunity, which I completely agree."Mantelli graduated this spring, so he won't get the opportunity to wear the logo he designed on the football field. Nevertheless, he's still proud of his work. The experience had ignited his interest in graphic design, a field he may pursue now that he's graduated. The Beavers kick off their 100th season against Michigan Tech on Aug. 27 at Chet Anderson Stadium. With kickoff scheduled at 6 p.m., it will be the first home night game for BSU since 2024. Special events and celebrations for the 100th season will be released at a later date.0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 40 Просмотры 0 предпросмотр -
SPORTS.YAHOO.COMEx-49ers QB compares Kyle Shanahan to all-time great coachAlex Smith thinks it's only a matter of time before San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan wins a championshipThe former 49ers quarterback and current ESPN analyst drew a direct comparison between Shanahan and Hall of Fame coach Andy Reid — and suggested a championship run for the 49ers head coach is inevitable."I think he's one of the best head coaches in football," Smith said of Shanahan in a recent interview with Larry Kreuger. "He reminds me a lot of when I went to Kansas City with Andy. At that point, Andy was widely regarded as an amazing head coach, an offensive mind, but hadn't won the big one yet. And Kyle's been on the doorstep how many times now?"Reid was the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles for 14 seasons and, despite nine playoff appearances, three NFC championship appearances and one Super Bowl appearance, didn't win his first Lombardi Trophy until the 2019 season with Patrick Mahomes at quarterback in Kansas City. Shanahan is in a similar boat, having been to the playoffs five times, the NFC title game three times and losing in the Super Bowl twice — both to Reid's Chiefs.Smith went on to say the longer Shanahan remains in contention, the more inevitable a title becomes."It's going to happen, and it's going to be an avalanche," Smith said. "All of a sudden, we are going to be talking about him on the Mount Rushmore. Every year, look at the division. Arguably, the two best teams in football last year were in that division, and look at the Niners' track record against them. Look how well they played them. Given all the adversity, what everybody expected to be a down year — a rebuild, reset year — and when you remain that competitive, you're always going to have a chance."Smith, who was drafted by San Francisco with the No. 1 overall pick in 2005, said he wishes he could have played in Shanahan's system. He also credited Shanahan and general manager John Lynch for building one of the most stable organizations in the league."At some point the dam's gonna break for Kyle and the Niners," Smith said. "As a Niner fan, we are lucky to have this guy. Him and John Lynch — look how stable these guys have been. Look where the franchise is at. And obviously so much of it is because of Kyle."This article originally appeared on Niners Wire: Alex Smith compares 49ers HC Kyle Shanahan to Chiefs HC Andy Reid0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 40 Просмотры 0 предпросмотр

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMHow much money will KC Chiefs pay DB L'Jarius Sneed in 2026?The Kansas City Chiefs reunited with veteran defensive back L'Jarius Sneed on June 8, just a day before their mandatory OTAs kick off at team facilities. Sneed, who was a member of Kansas City's Super Bowl LVII and LVIII rosters, was selected by the Chiefs in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL Draft and played in Western Missouri until 2023, when he was traded to the Tennessee Titans. How much money will Kansas City pay Sneed in 2026? Here's a look at the star defender's new contract with the Chiefs:L'Jarius Sneed contract detailsThough details of Sneed's deal with Kansas City remain scarce, NFL insider Adam Schefter reported that the veteran defender's one-year contract will be worth up to $5,000,000.Chiefs are re-signing CB L’Jarius Sneed to a one-year deal worth up to $5 million, per the Katz Brothers. pic.twitter.com/7n2NBSGWKy— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) June 8, 2026L'Jarius Sneed 2026 cap hitIt is still too soon to tell exactly how Sneed's contract will hit Kansas City's salary cap. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWhy Charles Barkley still ‘hates’ New York Knicks legend Patrick EwingPhoto by Mitchell Layton/Getty ImagesCharles Barkley brought an old New York Knicks wound back to life with Patrick Ewing sitting right beside him.The NBA Finals returning to Madison Square Garden has put Knicks history everywhere. Current stars are chasing a title, former legends are back in the spotlight, and old playoff scars are being turned into television jokes.Barkley used that setting to remind Ewing of one loss that still follows him decades later. It wasn’t a real bitter attack, but the kind of funny jab only one Hall of Famer can throw at another.Photo by M. Anthony Nesmith/Icon Sportswire via Getty ImagesCharles Barkley jokes he hates Patrick Ewing over New York Knicks playoff sweepSportsCenter shared Charles Barkley’s playful message to Patrick Ewing during the NBA Finals broadcast.“I just wanna say this, I hate you. I only got swept one time in my life, and you swept me,” Barkley said.Barkley delivered the line as a funny jab, not a genuinely bitter response. Ewing was part of the old Knicks identity that made life miserable for stars across the Eastern Conference, and Barkley still enjoys turning that frustration into comedy. The joke worked because it came from a real playoff memory. Barkley’s teams had plenty of postseason battles, but one Knicks series has clearly stayed in his head.Patrick Ewing swept Charles Barkley in the 1989 New York Knicks vs Philadelphia 76ers seriesBarkley was talking about the 1989 Eastern Conference first-round series, when Ewing’s Knicks swept Barkley’s Philadelphia 76ers 3-0 in a best-of-five matchup.New York won Game 1 102-96, escaped Game 2 107-106, then finished the sweep with an 116-115 overtime win in Philadelphia on May 2, 1989. Gerald Wilkins hit the deciding jumper with six seconds left in overtime, and the Knicks even celebrated the sweep on the Spectrum floor.Ewing averaged 28.3 points, 10.0 rebounds, and 2.7 blocks in the series, while Barkley averaged 27.0 points and 13.0 rebounds. The numbers show Barkley was not embarrassed individually, but the result still gave Ewing bragging rights for life. That is why the line landed decades later. Barkley may say he hates Ewing, but the real feeling behind it is respect mixed with one playoff scar he still refuses to let go.Read more:Shaq and Charles Barkley just picked a Finals MVP — KAT’s name has everyone talking!Charles Barkley offers blunt take on LeBron James potentially staying with Lakers in free agencyCharles Barkley claims Victor Wembanyama is ‘spinning’ as Karl-Anthony Towns takes control of NBA Finals0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 40 Просмотры 0 предпросмотр

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMYankees’ Cody Bellinger investment was already paying dividends before Aaron Judge’s injuryAaron Boone was working out of his office at Yankee Stadium when pitching coach Matt Blake relayed the biggest news of the Bombers’ offseason.“Cody’s back,” Blake told Boone and staffer Ryan McLaughlin, who was also on the scene.Boone responded with excitement, as the Yankees had come to terms with a player who had posted a 125 wRC+ and a 4.9 fWAR for them in 2025.Blake, of course, was referring to Cody Bellinger, whose prolonged free agency unofficially came to an end on Jan. 21. After months of offers, stalemates and concessions, Boone called the Scott Boras-backed outfielder — who had been ignoring the manager’s texts toward the end of negotiations — to congratulate him on his new five-year, $162.5 million, option-heavy deal with the Yankees.“It was quiet for a while,” Boone said Sunday before adding, “I remember that being a good day for us.”Boone recalled that afternoon after Bellinger reminded the Yankees what a worthwhile investment he’s been thus far. The 30-year-old hit a go-ahead homer in the eighth inning of Sunday’s 6-1 win over the Boston Red Sox, giving the pinstripers a one-run lead before Jazz Chisholm Jr. broke the game open with a three-run shot a few batters later.“That one felt good,” Bellinger said afterward. “It’s always nice to be able to help the team win in the late innings, and I was glad I was able to come through there.”With a 2-for-4 performance on Sunday, as well as a 2-for-5 showing in Monday’s 7-5 win over the Cleveland Guardians, Bellinger is now hitting .276 with nine home runs, 43 RBI, seven stolen bases, an .847 OPS and a 138 wRC+.Bellinger’s two most recent ribbies came on a 10th-inning, game-winning single in Monday’s victory.“There’s more in the tank, and I obviously just want to continue to strive to get there,” the 2019 National League MVP modestly said, but Ben Rice (1.032, 182) and Aaron Judge (.908, 150) are the only Yankees who have been better than Bellinger in terms of OPS and wRC+ as of Monday morning. And with Judge playing through a compromising rib fracture for a month before going on the injured list on Friday, Bellinger has been the club’s second-most consistent hitter since the season began.Entering Monday, Bellinger (2.4) also ranked second on the team to Rice (2.7) in fWAR.“He’s been great,” said Cam Schlittler, who allowed one earned run over 5 2/3 innings on Sunday. “I think he’s a five-tool player. So obviously, with the situation with Judge, he’s one of the guys that can step up.”“Getting to play with him now, it’s sick to see it every day, the defense, the versatility in the outfield to the infield, the way he just goes up there and swings the bat, the perfect spin off the bat,” Chisholm added. “I still don’t get how he hits the ball like that perfectly, but it’s sick.”As Schlittler and Chisholm alluded to, Bellinger hasn’t just been an asset on offense. He’s also been one of the best defensive left fielders in baseball this season.Heading into Monday, the two-time All-Star easily led his position with 15 Defensive Runs Saved. Tampa Bay’s Chandler Simpson was in a distant second with six.Simpson led all left fielders with six Outs Above Average, while Bellinger was second with three. The two were tied atop the leaderboards with a Fielding Run Value of four. While Bellinger is capable of playing all three outfield spots and first base, the stabilizing presence he brought to Yankee Stadium’s spacious left field — after years of the position being a revolving door — is partly why Brian Cashman prioritized re-signing the 30-year-old over the winter.“I feel like he’s been amazing in left field,” Boone said early last week, though Bellinger’s ability to tailor his approach at the plate and fit in the clubhouse were also attractive qualities.“He’s just a gritty gamer,” Boone said. “He’s playing really well on both sides and on the bases, and he’s just a winning player.”While there’s still plenty of time before Bellinger’s contract can be graded, his impressive start to the season is one of the reasons why the Yankees believe they can withstand Judge’s daunting absence. Rice’s emergence as one of the game’s best young hitters is another, and so is a fearsome rotation that stands to improve once Max Fried is back from a bone bruise. The Yankees haven’t always stayed afloat when Judge gets hurt; the 2023 season is a prime example. But this squad is much deeper than the one that lost the three-time MVP to a broken toe three seasons ago, and Bellinger deserves some credit for that.“Obviously, it’s a huge loss,” Bellinger said of Judge. “We all feel it in this locker room, and at the end of the day, we’re gonna have to find ways to win. Even just having his name in that lineup is a presence, so we’re gonna have to find ways to win, continue to believe in each other, and continue to play good baseball.“We all gotta lean on each other in here. We still have a really, really talented team, and we got a lot of athletic guys, and we can win in many different ways. We’re gonna have to fight, and [Sunday] was a good day to get going.”____0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 40 Просмотры 0 предпросмотр

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMJapan 'pray' on Endo fitness for World Cup openerWataru Endo is facing a race to be fit for Japan's World Cup opener against the Netherlands (Johnnie Izquierdo)Japan captain Wataru Endo is in a race to be fit for their World Cup opener against the Netherlands on Sunday, leaving coach Hajime Moriyasu "praying" he makes it.The Liverpool midfielder is struggling with a foot injury and was not involved in any full training sessions at Japan's pre-tournament camp in Mexico.Endo took part in running and passing drills with his team-mates on Monday after moving to their World Cup base in Nashville, and Moriyasu said he was still in contention to face the Dutch in Dallas."According to the medical reports, there is nothing to say that he can't play," Moriyasu, whose team also play Sweden and Tunisia in Group F, told reporters before leaving Mexico."So we just believe, pray and wait."Endo suffered a season-ending foot injury playing for Liverpool against Sunderland in February and returned for Japan in a 1-0 friendly win over Iceland in Tokyo on May 31.He came off at half-time and has continued to feel discomfort.Moriyasu said replacing the 33-year-old in his squad was an option if he was not able to play a part in the tournament."I'm always considering replacements if a player can't play, and that doesn't just go for Endo but for everyone."We have several players returning from injury and we need to keep assessing them until the last minute, but we called them up with the assumption that they would be fit in time."Brighton winger Kaoru Mitoma was left out after injuring his hamstring less than a week before Moriyasu named his squad.Monaco's Takumi Minamino also missed out after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in December.amk/pst0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 40 Просмотры 0 предпросмотр

SPORTS.YAHOO.COM‘Cardi Ds’: Charles Barkley flustered by rapper Cardi B during NBA Finals Game 3 halftimeCredit: NBA Finals on ABCRapper Cardi B was the featured performer at halftime of Game 3 of the NBA Finals in New York City on Monday night, but the performance ended up reaching the television viewers as well. That’s because, as the ESPN on ABC halftime show’s producers cut to a live feed of the rapper on stage, Charles Barkley got a little hot and bothered on air.“I don’t know if those (are) B’s. They might be Cardi D’s,” Barkley said. “I’m pretty sure those aren’t B’s… She’s got the wrong initials.”Charles Barkley: “I don’t know if those (are) B’s. And based on Barkley’s past remarks about the women of San Antonio, for instance, we know that the star commentator is quite attuned to the curvature of certain women. While most sports media professionals would avoid such a comment live on air, Barkley has no concerns about going there. And that allowed Inside the NBA co-hosts Shaquille O’Neal and Kenny Smith to join in on the bit, which they gladly did.Barkley has been on fire at halftime throughout the Finals, tracking the performances of big men Victor Wembanyama and Karl-Anthony Towns, which have largely swayed each game. Yet on Monday night at Madison Square Garden, the big takeaway from halftime was Barkley becoming flustered by the presence of the popular rapper down on the arena floor below. The post ‘Cardi Ds’: Charles Barkley flustered by rapper Cardi B during NBA Finals Game 3 halftime appeared first on Awful Announcing.0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 40 Просмотры 0 предпросмотр

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWill Donald Trump attend Game 4 of NBA Finals for Knicks-Spurs?Will President Donald Trump attend Game 4 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday night? After Trump's attendance for Monday night's Game 3 of the New York Knicks' home stand against the San Antonio Spurscaused a logistical nightmare for fans and altered fan watch parties, it doesn't appear as if he'll be there for Game 4. The fact that the watch parties outside of Madison Square Garden will back on for Game 4 is a telling sign that Trump won't be back for the next game. The fact that he got loudly booed during the national anthem could inspire him to just watch the next game from the White House or Mar-a-Lago. Just from a logistical perspective, not having a sitting President attend Game 4 will make it easier for fans to get into Madison Square Garden for the next NBA Finals game. Did fans really boo Trump during the game? Yes, they did. Did he fall asleep during the game? We're not sure, but it looked like it, at least. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMCaitlin Clark answers critics with some 'noise' of her own: a last-second 3-pointer for the winWASHINGTON (AP) — Caitlin Clark was alone with the ball, right in the front of the logo with the game on the line.As frustrating as this season has been at times for her and the Indiana Fever, this was Clark's comfort zone — and the shot hit nothing but net.Clark's 3-pointer with 1.2 seconds remaining gave Indiana a 78-76 victory over the Washington Mystics on Monday night — and gave the 24-year-old star a signature moment following a rocky stretch at the start of her third season.“I think sometimes we take great players, and certainly generational talent, for granted,” Indiana coach Stephanie White said. “What she did was incredible for us. She's going to have many more moments like that. I know she is. And we needed this one tonight.”Indiana was just 5-5 entering the game. Clark was filling up the stat sheet but had not been shooting the ball well. As always, she's been under a microscope, having to answer for a feisty sideline exchange with White and receiving criticism by national columnists for her occasional histrionics on the court. The online conversation around her feels almost tribal at times, but in front of a packed crowd at Washington's CareFirst Arena, she contributed to another electric atmosphere. White was asked if this game-winning 3 might quiet the “noise” around Clark, but that may be impossible.“I don't know that the noise is ever going to be quiet,” White said. “This is what Caitlin does. She makes big shots, and she has big moments.”After scoring 10 points in the first quarter, Clark was derailed for a bit because of foul trouble. Her four-point play in the third pushed Indiana's lead to 17, but the Mystics rallied.Down by one with 36 seconds left, Clark missed two straight free throws, but before another round of discourse could even get started, Washington turned the ball over and Clark patiently found Kelsey Mitchell in transition for a layup to give the Fever the lead. Then Sonia Citron made two free throws with 4.3 seconds to play, putting the Mystics up 76-75. Indiana called timeout, and Sophie Cunningham's inbound pass sailed across the court toward Clark, who was all alone after Washington's Cotie McMahon tried for the steal and missed. It was perhaps the biggest shot of her WNBA career.“You better make this,” Clark said she was thinking at the time. “Because I missed my free throws. All those plays are plays we work on after practice, so everybody knows their role, everybody knows what they're going to do.“Cotie almost got a fingertip on it,” Clark added. “It kind of worked out perfectly that she went for the steal. Honestly probably the most wide-open shot I had all night. My hands got a little clammy, but still went in, I guess.”Teammate Lexie Hull was in the opposite corner, pretty open in her own right, but it was no surprise the ball went to Clark.“From my view, I thought Cotie was going to get it,” Hull said. “Then it slipped through, and still holding my breath. I have complete confidence that it's going to go in, but to see it go in and put us in the lead, that was one of the biggest moments we've had this season, so very excited.“And just for Caitlin, very happy to see it go through for her.”___AP WNBA: https://apnews.com/hub/wnba-basketball0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 40 Просмотры 0 предпросмотр -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMHopes soar for US fans as hosts assemble at World Cup campUS captain Tim Ream was a seven-year-old during the 1994 World Cup, and only remembers 'bits and pieces' of the event -- but enough to know that a home World Cup is 'a once-in-a-career opportunity' that comes with pressure (JAMIE SQUIRE)Under dazzling blue California skies, the United States soccer team held its first World Cup training session at the co-hosts' base camp Monday. For the 5,500 local fans with tickets to attend -- the lucky ones among a lottery entered by 33,000 -- optimism for the tournament about to kick off in their backyard was even brighter."I think they can achieve a lot. I think a quarter-final berth would be expected at this stage," said 43-year-old fan Eric Gordon, attending with his young nephew Oliver."We could win the whole thing...the best ranked teams don't always win," he added, with a smile. That positive outlook, widely shared among supporters who spoke with AFP, has not always been the case for the US men's national team."A couple years ago my dad and me were counting passes in one of the (US) games and we couldn't even count up to five -- so from that perspective we're looking a lot better!" joked 16-year-old Paige Dixon."Quarter-finals...anything less, I would be a little disappointed," she agreed. It is a contrast to the first World Cup on US soil, in 1994, the tournament which still holds the all-time attendance record at 3.6 million.Back then, expectations for the host team were low. But the US beat heavily favored Colombia to reach the last 16, and the seeds for an American soccer boom were sown. For supporter Gordon, that tournament took place when he was 12, and "changed my life.""I became a soccer fanatic after that. And I'm hoping the same thing for my nephew" this time, he said. For that to happen, much more is now expected from the home team on the field -- and the players are well aware.US captain Tim Ream, who was a seven-year-old back then, said he remembers "bits and pieces" of the event -- enough to know that a home World Cup is "a once-in-a-career opportunity" that comes with considerably "more expectation and more pressure.""I think we've all been, I wouldn't say overwhelmed, but pleasantly surprised by the excitement and the buzz around the team, and in the stadiums," he said.Goalkeeper Matt Freese recalled being "inspired by the previous generation" of players as a child, and hopes that -- if his crop can do the same -- it can propel the US further up the global soccer food chain."There's a compounding effect to it, obviously...hopefully we inspire the next generation."We are focused as we can (be) to continue to leave the next generation inspired."- 'Win' -The US finds itself in Group D. Though the hosts are favorites, any team could very plausibly finish top -- or bottom. The campaign kicks off against Paraguay in nearby Los Angeles on Friday, before a detour to Seattle to face Australia, then back to southern California for Turkey.Should the US finish runner-up, they could play Iran in the first knockouts -- a meeting that would throw up immense geopolitical consequences, given the ongoing war between the nations. It would also be consequential for California's huge Persian community, including Ramin Nayebzadeh, who attended Monday's training with his nine-year-old son Arta."Originally I'm from Iran but we don't support the team because of the regime," he explained."As an American, we support the US team...especially as my son's dream is to be a future soccer player of this country."Young Arta, though, is not waiting for future editions of the World Cup to dream of US glory."I think they will win the World Cup, because they have a really good team and really good soccer players," he beamed.amz/jgc0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 40 Просмотры 0 предпросмотр

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMCraig Breslow Dispels Rumor Of Red Sox Trading Marcelo MayerCraig Breslow Dispels Rumor Of Red Sox Trading Marcelo Mayer originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.A rumor circulated around league offices on Monday saying that young Boston Red Sox shortstop Marcelo Mayer had been traded. It did not take long for the Red Sox Chief Baseball Officer, Craig Breslow, to discredit those rumblings. "I had somebody reach out to me and say, ‘Is it accurate to say you traded Marcelo [Mayer] to the Diamondbacks?'" Breslow told Alex Speier. "There’s some things that you see, and you’re like, ‘OK, that is not accurate, but I at least understand where it came from.’ And then there are things that are just blatantly false and don’t deserve a ton of attention, and this falls into that category."Boston was reportedly engaged in trade talks with the Arizona Diamondbacks throughout much of the offseason. Arizona's star second baseman Ketel Marte was heavily rumored to have been a Boston trade target. Marte, 32, is a switch hitter batting .246 this season with 11 home runs and 37 RBI. Despite his massive star power, the Red Sox are fully out on dealing Mayer, who they view as one of the potential young tenants of their team. This was the case over the offseason, and Breslow's comments on Monday prove that this is the case now. Regardless of how you feel about Mayer or the Chief Baseball Officer, it is a good sign to know that the front office has plans for the future and that certain players are integral to those plans. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMTexas A&M newcomer named NCBWA Freshman All‑AmericanTexas A&M continues to collect postseason recognition even after its playoff exit, and this time one of the youngest Aggies is in the spotlight. On Monday, true freshman third baseman Nico Partida was named to the Freshman All‑American First Team by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA), adding another major accolade to his breakout debut season. After the Aggies reshuffled the infield following the 2025 campaign, Partida seized the starting third‑base job from day one an important development that allowed Gavin Grahovac to shift to first base, a preseason concern for the coaching staff. Partida not only stabilized the position but thrived in it, remaining a fixture in the lineup until suffering an injury late in the year. That injury ultimately derailed his chances at national Freshman of the Year, but up to that point he was widely viewed as a frontrunner. He earned Perfect Game’s Midseason Freshman of the Year, received an invitation to the 2026 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team Training Camp, and was named to the Freshman All‑SEC Team. The numbers back up the praise. In 49 games, Partida slashed .306/.408/.550 with 55 hits, eight doubles, 12 home runs, and 43 RBI. He recorded 17 multi‑hit games and 12 multi‑RBI performances, highlighted by a dominant outing against Georgia in which he tallied four hits, six RBI, and a grand slam.Well deserved, Nico 👏🔗https://t.co/wMPPMoKJd9pic.twitter.com/DrADTej1Il— Texas A&M Baseball (@AggieBaseball) June 8, 2026The Freshman All-American team is voted upon by members of the NCBWA. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMSpurs' Victor Wembanyama shakes off Game 2 miss by taking over Game 3 of the NBA FinalsNEW YORK (AP) — Victor Wembanyama shook off his miss at the buzzer in Game 2 by taking over Game 3 of the NBA Finals and preventing the San Antonio Spurs from getting pushed to the brink of elimination.Wembanyama made the first two shots he attempted on Monday night on the way to scoring 32 points in a 115-111 victory at the New York Knicks. He had nine points in the first five minutes, including an alley-oop on the first basket of the game and a dunk on the next possession and was a force on both ends of the court, especially late when it mattered most.Wembanyama was a key to San Antonio building an early lead but even more importantly in a third-quarter rally to bounce back from another blown double-digit lead. After delivering the pass to Keldon Johnson for a layup that tied the score at 76 with 5:38 left in the third, Wembanyama hit a 3-pointer from 29 feet out to put the Spurs ahead. He scored the first basket of what turned into a dominant fourth quarter, later drawing a foul and making a pair of free throws for San Antonio’s 99th and 100th points. With four minutes left and the Knicks looking to stage another comeback, Wembanyama surged to block what looked to be an easy layup by Landry Shamet. Wembanyama finished with eight rebounds, six assists and three blocks in what was close to a must-win situation. No team has fallen behind 3-0 in the finals and come back to win the series.Teammates were not at all worried about Wembanyama in the aftermath of the 22-year-old star clanking a shot off the rim that would have been the Game 2 winner. Johnson said his recommendation was to shoot again and made clear the Spurs want the ball in Wembanyama's hands at important moments.Over the weekend, coach Mitch Johnson said he spoke to Wembanyama, though it didn't appear to be anything different from their normal conversations over the course of the season and playoffs.“I think he’s looking for what my job is, which is to help him, support him, give him clarity, give him solutions or possible solutions to continue to give him opportunities and give him advantages,” Johnson said before the game. “That’s our job, and my job specifically, to put these guys in position to be successful, and then they have got to go and help themselves and help their teammates when they get out there on the floor.”Knicks counterpart Mike Brown acknowledged there's no way to gauge how well an opponent feels about containing Wembanyama because the 7-foot-4 big man is that impactful.“It’s a pretty simple formula: You’re not blocking his shots, you’re not getting him off his spots — you’re not doing these things to him," Brown said. “You hope you can make him work at the end of the day, and you hope he misses some shots."Wembanyama missed seven shots from the floor, going 11 of 18 and silencing the crowd that at one point directed a vulgar chant his way. He'll now get a chance to help the Spurs try to even the finals in Game 4 on Wednesday night back at Madison Square Garden.___AP NBA: https://apnews.com/hub/NBA0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 40 Просмотры 0 предпросмотр

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMNBA finals: Wembanyama silences Garden’s party as Spurs beat Knicks in Game 3Victor Wembanyama scored 32 points as the Spurs snapped the Knicks’ postseason winning streak at 13 games.Photograph: Yuki Iwamura/APThe spectacle at Madison Square Garden on Monday night was such that the basketball almost took a back seat to everything else. The president in the suites. The mayor in the crowd. Movie stars along the sideline. The culmination of days of talk over $10,000 tickets, heightened security and cancelled watch parties alongside the anticipation for New York City’s first home NBA finals game since 25 June 1999.When all was said and done, Victor Wembanyama had given New York something new to talk about. The San Antonio Spurs snapped the Knicks’ 13-game postseason winning streak with a 115-111 victory, playing spoiler to the Garden’s party and cutting the deficit to 2-1 in this year’s finals. Game 4 is Wednesday in New York.Related: NBA finals 2026 Game 3: San Antonio Spurs 115-111 New York Knicks – live updatesWembanyama put together his best performance of the series, finishing with 32 points, eight rebounds, six assists and three blocks. Stephon Castle, who had 23 points, hit two free throws with 6.8 seconds left in the third nail-biting finish in as many games.Jalen Brunson fueled the Knicks with 32 points and OG Anunoby added 28, but the rest of their team went cold in the fourth quarter of a back-and-forth affair.Donald Trump, a longtime Knicks fan invited as a guest of team owner James Dolan, watched from a suite, received heavy boos during the national anthem. New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani attended separately; he said earlier Monday he paid about $1,000 for his standing-room-only ticket. Spike Lee, Timothée Chalamet, Ben Stiller, Tina Fey, Tracy Morgan and Larry David were among the stars on celebrity row. Before Monday, the Knicks had not lost since 23 April. No NBA team has lost the first two games of the finals on its home floor and come back to win the championship, but the Spurs’ hopes of doing so remain alive. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMJavier Tebas Reacts to Real Madrid Election, Mourinho Return, and Potential €150m SigningMADRID, SPAIN - MAY 21: Javier Tebas, president of LaLiga, participates in a discussion on “Technology, Piracy, and Artificial Intelligence in Sports” during the ISDE Sports Convention at the Official College of Architects of Madrid on May 21, 2026, in Madrid, Spain. (Photo By Irina R. Hipolito/Europa Press via Getty Images) | Europa Press via Getty Images Javier Tebas offered his thoughts on several of the biggest storylines surrounding Real Madrid during an event held at Celta Vigo’s headquarters. The La Liga president appeared particularly intrigued by the results of Real Madrid’s presidential election, where Florentino Pérez secured another term but faced a challenge from businessman Enrique Riquelme, who managed to earn a surprising share of the vote despite entering the race with little public recognition.“Florentino Pérez has achieved a good victory, but for this guy with a Mexican accent, who nobody knew 15 days ago, getting 35 percent of the vote isn’t bad,” Tebas said. “I don’t want to imagine what would have happened if he had a Spanish accent and 40 days to present his candidacy.”Tebas suggested that the election revealed a side of Real Madrid that had largely remained hidden during Pérez’s two decades at the helm.“We hadn’t seen Florentino on an election campaign or in the media for 20 years. This is the real Florentino I know,” Tebas said. “He won, and the numbers speak for themselves, but I think a different Real Madrid has emerged than what many people expected. Someone who was unknown, with a Mexican accent, who garnered the support of 35 percent of Real Madrid members under the current circumstances… any leader of any organization, myself included, should consider the opinions expressed when 35 percent of the members disagree. It’s important that everyone is represented and that decisions are made for the majority.”While acknowledging Pérez’s victory, Tebas argued that the election itself was more significant than the final outcome.“Honestly, it doesn’t matter to me (who won),” he said. “I maintain that 30 days ago nobody would have imagined that anyone could run as an alternative to Florentino Pérez given Real Madrid’s current circumstances. And in 20 or 25 days, the philosophy of the most important club in this country, along with FC Barcelona, has changed dramatically. We were used to this with Barcelona, but not with Real Madrid.”The La Liga chief also commented on the return of José Mourinho, who is expected to begin a new chapter at Real Madrid after more than a decade away from the club.“I think Mourinho’s return is fun,” Tebas said. “I’m not going to comment on the sporting aspect, but I’ve always said that I liked a league with Mourinho and Guardiola because they added a lot of spice. We all know Mourinho, he’s going to be a real game-changer.”Mourinho’s previous tenure at Real Madrid coincided with one of the most intense periods in Spanish football history, as his team battled Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona in a rivalry that helped define an era. Tebas’ comments suggest he expects the Portuguese coach’s personality and presence to once again become a major talking point across the league. Finally, Tebas addressed reports linking Real Madrid with a potential €150 million transfer, though he stopped short of discussing any specific player.“The 150m signing? I’ve always said that Spanish football shouldn’t waste money,” Tebas said. “Let’s hope that if Real Madrid makes such a significant investment, they make the right choice and bring in a great player, a star.”0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 40 Просмотры 0 предпросмотр

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMTrump Watches Knicks Lose for First Time in 46 days, Team’s Winning Streak Ends at 13AP Photo/Ross D. FranklinThe New York Knicks had not lost a game for 46 days, and on Monday, the 45th and 47th president showed up to watch Game 3 of the NBA Finals from the owner’s box in Madison Square Garden. The Knicks defeated the San Antonio Spurs in the first two games of the best-of-seven series in San Antonio, pushing their incredible postseason winning streak to 13 games. On Monday, they looked to take a virtually insurmountable 3-0 lead.During the singing of the national anthem before Game 3 of the NBA Finals, President Donald Trump was booed as few presidents had been jeered before as he stood saluting the flag from Knicks owner James Dolan’s box. A White House press pool report described the booing as “thunderous.”It was the first NBA Finals game at the Garden since 1999. After falling behind early, the Knicks stormed back and took a 64-57 lead going into halftime. But San Antonio outscored New York by 11 in the second half and downed the home team 115-111.Trump’s presence created chaos outside the arena in the lead-up to the game. The Knicks told fans to arrive at the Garden at least two hours before tipoff because of “TSA-style” screening screening procedures. The team also said it would enforce a “strict no-bag policy.” Additionally, a security fence has been erected outside the venue, and a scheduled watch party outside MSG has been canceled. Also, the NYPD closed the streets between West 30th and West 35th from Sixth to Eighth Avenue. People in the area will not be allowed to travel east or west, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said, adding that the security measures would remain in place even if the president left the game early. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMVictor Wembanyama bounces back with huge Game 3, leads Spurs to win over KnicksVictor Wembanyama knew his misses and miscues cost the San Antonio Spurs in Game 2 of the NBA Finals. He was uncharacteristically passive for much of that game, while his back-breaking bad pass and foul of Jalen Brunson in the waning seconds set up an all-time-dramatic Knicks victory.“Am I going to regret it? Yes, of course,” Wembanyama, 22, said after that defeat on Friday night. “Am I going to use that to fuel me and to fuel us next game? Absolutely.”Those proved to be wise words by Wembanyama, who bounced back with his best performance of the Finals to lead the Spurs to a 115-111 win in Game 3 at Madison Square Garden on Monday night. The 7-4 Wembanyama totaled 32 points on 11-of-18 shooting, eight rebounds, six assists and three blocks, cutting the Knicks’ series lead to 2-1 and injecting life into a Spurs season that was on the brink.Wembanyama was much more aggressive on offense, while the Spurs made a concerted effort to get him shots near the basket. To begin Game 3, the Spurs repeatedly found ways to create mismatches for the French sensation.Knicks 7-footer Karl-Anthony Towns had proven to be a tough defensive matchup for the slighter Wembanyama, so the Spurs set screens throughout Monday’s first quarter in an effort to make the Knicks switch. It resulted in three baskets for Wembanyama in the game’s first four minutes.First, De’Aaron Fox found Wembanyama for an alley-oop dunk.On the next possession, Stephon Castle set up another Wembanyama slam. And less than two minutes later, with Town switched onto him, Castle found Wembanyama for a long lob, setting up an easy lay-up.That’s after Wembanyama attempted only four shots in the entire first half of Game 2.The Spurs also made an adjustment on defense, using Wembanyama more in the “rover” role — allowing him to roam the baseline and protect the paint — while deploying smaller defenders against Towns on the perimeter.Josh Hart, whom Wembanyama willingly left open so he could stay near the basket, made the Spurs pay by making two quick 3-pointers. But the Knicks didn’t optimize Towns’ size advantage early on, as he attempted only one shot in the first quarter.Wembanyama had two blocks in the first quarter, including on a 3-point attempt by OG Anunoby from the corner. It was an overall eventful first quarter for Wembanyama, who, later in the period, got away with a shove that drove Brunson to the ground. Brunson took issue with the contact and got into it with Wembanyama once he rose to his feet.Wembanyama finished the first quarter with nine points on 4-of-6 shooting. The Knicks managed to score on Wembanyama several times in the second quarter, though the shots required a high degree of difficulty.Jose Alvarado drove, pulled up and hit a jumper over Wembanyama, kicking off an 11-2 Knicks run.Brunson later drilled a 3-pointer over the towering Frenchman, putting the Knicks up 50-49 with 4:18 to go for their first lead. But on the Spurs’ next possession, Wembanyama answered with a 3-pointer of his own.And in the final 75 seconds of the half, Hart and Brunson both hit 3-pointers — the latter of which also coming over Wembanyama — to give the Knicks a 54-47 lead at the break.Chants of “F–k you, Wemby” filled the Garden late in the second quarter. Wembanyama went into halftime with 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting.Wembanyama continued to make plays in the second half, first faking a 3-pointer and finding a cutting Keldon Johnson for a lay-up to tie the game, 76-76.On the Spurs’ next possession, a trailing Wembanyama pulled up for a deep 3-pointer, hitting it from about 30 feet out in front of Mitchell Robinson. And to kick off the fourth quarter, Castle found Wembanyama for another alley-oop.Wembanyama nearly delivered his biggest highlight of the series when he drilled another deep 3-pointer, this time through contact by Robinson. That gave the Spurs a 103-93 lead, and Wembanyama was set to go to the free-throw line to try to complete a four-point play. But the Knicks challenged the play, and after a review, Johnson was charged with an offensive foul for pushing Robinson into Wembanyama, taking three points off the board for San Antonio. But that didn’t derail Wembanyama, who converted yet another lob lay-up — this one with his back to the basket as he caught it — to give the Spurs a six-point lead with 5:40 to go.That was Wembanyama’s fourth basket off a lob in the game. That’s after Wembanyama scored only one basket via lob over the first two games combined. And the Spurs led, 108-100, when Wembanyama delivered a huge block on a driving Landry Shamet less than two minutes later. His interior defense presented challenges for the Knicks, who attempted 3-pointers throughout the fourth.Wembanyama averaged 27.5 points, 10.5 rebounds and 3.5 blocks per game over the first two games of the Finals, yet his performances in those Spurs losses left plenty to be desired. In Game 1, Wembanyama committed six turnovers and shot 6-of-21 from the field, with only six of those shots coming within three feet of the basket. In Game 2, Wembanyama shot just 2-of-4 in the first half, which head coach Mitch Johnson later said was “not acceptable.”And while he caught fire after halftime that night, Game 2 ended in disaster for Wembanyama. He missed two jumpers in the final 30.3 seconds, and in between, Wembanyama passed the ball to Stephon Castle when the latter wasn’t looking. The ball bounded off of Castle’s back and into the hands of Brunson, whom Wembanyama inadvertently fouled, setting up the Knicks’ game-winning free throw. On the other end, Wembanyama had a good look before the final buzzer, but he missed from about 20 feet out, capping a 105-104 Knicks victory.“I’m still very blurry, and that’s the whole problem,” Wembanyama said after that loss. “I need to have more poise, more control over the game. I’m not going to go through the whole possessions, but that’s the general image.”Still, Wembanyama — the NBA’s unanimous Defensive Player of the Year and third-place finisher in MVP voting — managed to maintain perspective ahead of Game 3.“How do I deal with it? I think the key is acceptance a lot of times, taking a step back, realizing all the journey that’s behind this and what’s ahead of this,” Wembanyama said.“This is everything that I wished for. There’s really no reason to overthink it. I mean, this is what I’m built for.”0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 40 Просмотры 0 предпросмотр -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COM10 Wild Second World War Fighters Souped-Up for Extreme Air RacingReno Air Racing, described as ‘the world’s fastest motorsport’, is a blistering blend of aviation heritage, extreme engineering and thrilling speed. Reno Air Racing, described as ‘the world’s fastest motorsport’, is a blistering blend of aviation heritage, extreme engineering and thrilling speed. Held in the Nevada desert, it pits legendary warbirds against one another in low-level, high-G duels around a pylon course. These aircraft, once icons of combat, are now stripped, clipped and polished to extremes.Engines are souped-up, wings shortened, cooling systems re-engineered — all in the relentless pursuit of speed. Prop tips blur, exhausts roar, and pilots skim the desert floor, often at over 450 mph. It’s not just racing; it’s the ultimate fusion of history, danger, and adrenaline. 10: Curtiss P-40 Warhawk The Curtiss P-40E Warhawk, famed for its shark-mouthed nose art and rugged wartime service, found a second life roaring over Reno’s desert skies. Once a symbol of wartime grit, it became a rare but thrilling sight among the sleek Mustangs and Bearcats dominating the Unlimited Class air races.Unlike the supercharged, high-altitude racers built later in the war, the P-40E was a tough, low-to-mid-altitude fighter, never the fastest — but its broad wings, throaty Allison engine, and unmistakable silhouette made it unforgettable. Racers who chose the Warhawk prized its stability and character, favouring heritage over outright performance. 10: Curtiss P-40 Warhawk To compete, mechanics stripped out armour, guns, and unnecessary weight, tuned the Allison V-1710 for maximum output, and polished every inch of its metal to minimise drag. Some even fitted larger props and fuel tweaks, wringing every last knot from its classic frame. The transformation kept the Warhawk’s soul but pushed its limits.P‑40s have occasionally raced at Reno, often in the Bronze or Unlimited classes. Airframes like Texas Warhawk (2017) reached qualifying speeds near 292 mph, with race speeds around 270 mph. 9: Rare Bear – Grumman F8F Bearcat The F8F Bearcat was the ultimate example of Grumman’s pantheon of piston-engined naval fighters. The company’s earlier Hellcat had been instrumental in defeating Japan, and the Bearcat was even more potent. Compact, with immaculate handling, the F8F was utterly brilliant.Long before the Bearcat had entered the realm of racing, it snatched the absolute climb rate record for piston-engined aircraft, whizzing up to 10,000 feet in 94 seconds in 1946. Fast and with a strong structure that lent itself to modification, the Bearcat was a ripe candidate for the Reno races. 9: Rare Bear – Grumman F8F Bearcat Rare Bear is a heavily modified Grumman F8F Bearcat, rebuilt by pilot Lyle Shelton from a crashed airframe in 1969 for air racing. Fitted with a powerful Wright R-3350 radial engine producing over 4000 horsepower, it became one of the fastest piston-engine aircraft ever built. In 1989, Rare Bear set a 3 km (1.86 mile) world speed record of 528.33 mph (850.26 km/h). With shortened wings, aerodynamic refinements, and distinctive “bear” artwork, it dominated the Unlimited Class at the Reno Air Races. 8: Sea Fury There is much debate over what the ultimate piston-engined fighter was; some offer the P-51H, P-47N, or other types for this prestigious, subjective ranking, but the two most common candidates are the American Grumman Bearcat and the British Hawker Sea Fury. This sense of rivalry between these two brilliant radial-engined naval fighters carries on over eighty years after their first flights. Though the Sea Fury did not serve in the war, we will include it as it took its first flight in 1945.The Hawker Sea Fury T.Mk 20 Dreadnought began life as a two-seat Royal Navy trainer, designed to familiarise pilots with the high-powered radial engine and handling characteristics of the single-seat fighter variants. When converted for air racing, Dreadnought underwent extensive modifications. 8: Sea Fury The rear seat was removed, structural reinforcements were added, and a Pratt & Whitney R‑4360 radial engine, producing around 3,800 hp, replaced the standard powerplant. These changes enabled the aircraft to safely handle extreme speeds and high g-forces on the pylon course while maintaining control over its large airframe.Dreadnought reached qualifying speeds of 452.7 mph (according to unofficial sources) in 1986 and, piloted by Joel Swager in 2018, achieved a Gold Unlimited victory at Reno with a race speed of 417.735 mph. Over its career, it accumulated multiple wins and several second-place finishes, demonstrating remarkable consistency and reliability despite its size. The September Fury is another Hawker Sea Fury turned Reno Unlimited racer. 7: Corsair The Vought F4U Corsair, (and the Goodyear F2G Super Corsair) is a legendary Second World War naval fighter, famed for its distinctive inverted gull wings and powerful Pratt & Whitney radial engine. It served with the United States Navy and Marines in the Pacific, excelling in both air‑to‑air combat and ground‑attack roles, reaching speeds of around 446 mph in standard military form (we’ve used a wartime Corsair image here). Its combination of agility, firepower, and durability made it a favourite among pilots and a feared adversary in the skies, cementing its place in aviation history. The Corsair at Reno is a rare and captivating sight, one of the few warbirds of its kind to race in the Unlimited Class. Its presence is significant because very few Corsairs were ever modified or maintained for competitive racing, making it a true gem for air-race enthusiasts. 7: Corsair At the Reno Air Races, modified Corsairs proved remarkable in the Unlimited Class. The F4U‑derived Super Corsair N31518, piloted by Steve Hinton, won the Unlimited Gold in 1985, averaging 438.186 mph over the eight‑lap course. Goodyear F2G N5588N, known as Race 57, was restored and entered competition in 1999, achieving impressive results.Their participation was rare, as few Corsairs were ever adapted for racing, and each airframe brought both historical significance and thrilling performance to the event. The aircraft’s gull wings give it instant charisma. Despite a relative scarcity of usable photographs, the Corsair’s speed rand rarity prestige make it an essential inclusion on our list. 6: Yak-3UR ‘Steadfast’ ‘Steadfast’ began life as one of a batch of 10 modern Yak-3Us built in the early 2000s in Romania by Avioane Craiova. The original Yak-3U was an experimental Yak-3 development fitted with a radial ASh-82 engine in place of the usual V-12 Klimov which did not enter production but several replicas have been built. Most replicas destined for owners in the west received R-1830 engines but when Will Whiteside acquired this Yak as an unfinished, engineless, potential racer project, he decided to install a rather more potent Pratt & Whitney R-2000, as fitted to the DC-4, but tuned to deliver 1750hp. 6: Yak-3UR ‘Steadfast’ Compared to most Reno racers, 1750hp doesn’t sound that much but the Yak airframe is light, small and streamlined. Steadfast (a name derived from Reno’s Stead airport and the intention to go fast) raced at Reno for six years and attained first place in the Unlimited Silver in 2012.The aircraft benefited from significant aerodynamic work to remove drag, it utilises an oversized spinner (from an A-26) and an afterspinner to smooth airflow through the cowling Steadfast ultimately set nine speed and climb records, including the speed record for its class at 416mph. Since 2017 Steadfast has been based in New Zealand. 5: Strega The P‑51 Mustang became a common choice for air racers in America due to the large number of surplus airframes available after World War II. Its robust design, high-speed potential, and adaptability made it ideal for conversion into Unlimited Class racers, and “Strega” emerged as one of the most successful and recognisable examples.Strega, a highly modified P‑51D, dominated the Reno Air Races for decades. Powered by a tuned Packard Merlin engine producing over 3000 hp, it could reach qualifying speeds exceeding 500 mph.Its aerodynamic refinements, including clipped wings, polished surfaces, and custom cooling systems, allowed it to maintain exceptional control through tight pylon turns at extreme velocities, a key factor in its repeated victories. 5: Strega Over its racing career, Strega won the Unlimited Gold Class multiple times, often competing head-to-head with other top Mustangs like Dago Red and Precious Metal. Its consistent podium finishes and record-setting laps made it a benchmark in air racing, demonstrating the effectiveness of combining World War 2-era airframes with modern engineering and tuning.Beyond speed, Strega’s legacy lies in its influence on piston-engine racing. Its dominance highlighted the advantages of the P‑51 platform, inspiring other racers to optimise weight, aerodynamics, and power to compete at the highest levels of the Reno Air Races. 4: Dago Red Dago Red is a North American P‑51 Mustang (44‑74996) restored as a competitive air racer by Frank Taylor in 1981. Taylor piloted Dago Red to numerous world records and championship victories during the 1980s. In 1983 at Mojave, California, the aircraft set a 15 km world speed record of 517.323 mph, highlighting its extreme performance and engineering.Over its racing career, Dago Red achieved repeated success at the Reno Air Races, including winning the Gold Unlimited class in 1982. It secured the Thompson Trophy in 2003 with a fastest lap of 512.164 mph and fastest race speed of 507.105 mph. 4: Dago Red In 2001, it recorded the fastest qualifying speed at Reno at 497.797 mph. Across two decades, Dago Red won the National Championship Air Races six times (1982, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2002, and 2003), cementing its reputation as one of the premier piston-engine racers in the world. The aircraft is powered by a race-tuned Rolls-Royce Merlin V12, estimated at 3500–3800 hp, driving a four-bladed Hamilton Standard paddle propeller. Its lightweight 7200 lb empty weight and 32 ft wingspan allow it to handle tightly around pylons at extreme speeds. With a maximum speed exceeding 520 mph and a rate of climb of 8,000 ft/min, Dago Red remains a benchmark in air racing, demonstrating the pinnacle of Mustang performance and Taylor’s piloting skill. 3: Precious Metal The P‑51XR, known as Precious Metal, was built in 1988 for high-speed air racing and should not be confused with the original P‑51D or the replica Precious Metal II. It is one of the most radical and exciting modified Mustangs ever created, combining a classic airframe with extreme engineering. It retained the P‑51 fuselage but incorporated a Rolls‑Royce Griffon 57A engine producing dramatically more horsepower than the original Merlin. To handle the immense torque, it used contra-rotating propellers from an Avro Shackleton (the same Griffon/contra arrangement was tested on the cancelled MB5 fighter), significantly improving stability and allowing pilots to exploit full power without losing control during tight pylon turns at Reno. 3: Precious Metal This mighty propulsion system combined with structural reinforcements to cope with the Griffon’s power, made Precious Metal one of the most capable and aggressive piston-engine racers ever built, pushing a WWII-era fighter far beyond its original limits. Its debut at the 1988 Reno Air Races immediately marked it as a contender, though early mechanical issues limited performance. Over time, it earned multiple podium finishes in the Unlimited Class, including a sixth-place finish in the Gold race. As an intriguing aside, the wartime Martin-Baker MB5 also adopted a Griffon/contra arrangement, a spectacular fighter prototype that did not enter production. 2: The Red Baron The Red Baron, a heavily modified P‑51D Mustang (NX7715C / 44‑84961), became one of the most iconic competitors in the Reno Air Races. Originally entered under various names, including Race #5 “Miss RJ” and “Roto‑Finish,” it was later reborn as Red Baron, with extensive modifications to maximise speed and performance. From its earliest appearances in 1966, the aircraft demonstrated competitive potential, qualifying 10th at 283.770 mph and finishing 5th in the consolation race at 304.990 mph. By 1968, Red Baron had established itself as a serious contender, qualifying 1st at 379.650 mph and finishing 2nd in the championship race at 386.852 mph. Subsequent years saw further improvements, and by 1971 it qualified 1st at 419.501 mph, finishing 4th in the championship at 412.101 mph. 2: The Red Baron The aircraft’s performance improvements came from detailed engineering modifications: the airframe was lightened by removing non-essential equipment, the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine was race-tuned to over 3,500 hp, and aerodynamic refinements—including a custom four-blade Hamilton Standard propeller, polished surfaces, and modified control surfaces—reduced drag while increasing stability through tight pylon turns.Though we have focused on the hardware, the pilot skills demonstrated by the Reno pilots is masterly. Competitors needed precise throttle management and exacting handling to safely maintain speeds exceeding 400 mph near the ground. Red Baron’s consistent podium finishes and record-setting laps cemented its place as one of the most formidable Unlimited Class racers in Reno history. 1: Voodoo The North American P‑51D Mustang Voodoo, piloted by Steve Hinton Jr., is widely recognised as the fastest piston‑engine propeller aircraft in the world. Its record-breaking performance at the Reno Air Races showcased the incredible potential of carefully modified warbirds. Every detail, from aerodynamics to engine tuning, was optimised for sheer speed. On 2 September 2017, Voodoo achieved an astonishing average speed of 531.64 mph (855.59 km/h) over the three‑kilometre course. This feat required not only a meticulously prepared aircraft but a pilot of extraordinary skill and courage. 1: Voodoo The Mustang’s balance of power, control, and agility made it perfect for the tight, high-speed turns of Reno’s Unlimited Class racing. Voodoo's crowning moment came in 1972, when it won the championship race at 416.160 mph.Later modifications, including a Rolls‑Royce Griffon engine and contra‑rotating propellers, pushed the aircraft to new extremes, achieving 1st-place qualifying at 427 mph and winning the championship at 415 mph in 1978.Follow Joe Coles and his Hush-Kit aviation world on Substack, Twitter X or Blue Sky (you can source the superb Hush-Kit Book of Warplanes via his social channels)If you enjoyed this story, please click the Follow button above to see more like it from AutocarPhoto Licence:https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/deed.en ]]>0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 40 Просмотры 0 предпросмотр

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMPeru 1-3 Spain: La Roja wrap up World Cup preparations with a winPeru 1-3 Spain: La Roja wrap up World Cup preparations with a winSpain claimed a comfortable 3-1 win against Peru in their final friendly fixture ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, thanks to goals from Mikel Oyarzabal and Pedri.Luis de la Fuente’s men roared into the lead inside two minutes at the Estadio Cuauhtémoc in Mexico, with Barcelona midfielder Pedri adding a second goal from close range before the break.La Roja extended their lead in the second half thanks to a calamitous own goal from Peru’s Pedro Gallese, although they were able to clinch a late consolation goal through Jairo Velez. With their 2026 FIFA World Cup preparations now complete, Spain – who are widely viewed as one of the favourites to win this summer’s tournament – turn their attention to facing Cape Verde, Saudi Arabia and Uruguay in Group H.As it happenedAfter being held to a 1-1 draw by Iraq in their final friendly on home soil ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Luis de la Fuente named a stronger side to face Peru in Puebla, Mexico.Barring a few absentees – including Lamine Yamal – who are still recovering from injury, it was arguably a full-strength Spain side and they quickly showed just how lethal they can be in attack when Mikel Oyarzabal opened the scoring inside two minutes.Pau Cubarsi’s incisive assist from inside the centre circle allowed the Real Sociedad forward to drive a fierce strike from the edge of the box beyond the Peruvian goalkeeper. He has now scored in each of his last six international appearances, and looks set to play a crucial role for La Roja at this summer’s tournament.Peru, ranked 51st in the world according to the latest FIFA rankings, came close to conceding once again when Pedri picked out his Barcelona teammate Ferran Torres with a well-weighted ball over the top of the defence. The forward mis-hit his volley, though, and was spared his blushes by the offside flag. But arguably the worst miss of the match came in the 19th minute when Oyarzabal, keen to score his second of the evening, blasted Pedri’s pinpoint cross from the left flank over the crossbar from close range. The 29-year-old squandered another chance just before the half-hour mark, with Fabio Gruber beating him to the ball and denying him the chance to tap Fabian Ruiz’s teasing ball across the face of goal into the net.Spain did eventually find a second goal though when Pedri tucked home from five yards out, meeting Ferran Torres’ cutback from the byline and despatching a first-time effort past Pedro Gallese with aplomb.Peru came just inches away from halving the deficit before the break when Jairo Velez sent a well-worked ball through for Jhonny Vidales, who managed to get the better of Cubarsi but ultimately saw his shot scuppered by a sliding challenge from Aymeric Laporte.Bad turned to worse for Peru mere minutes into the second half when a calamitous error from Gallese saw the experienced goalkeeper palm Yeremy Pino’s cross into his own net under very little pressure. They were able to clinch a goal back shortly after the hour mark though, and they did so in style when Lopez threaded a remarkable ball beyond the Spanish defence for Velez to place past David Raya. But another defensive calamity almost proved costly for Peru, when Renzo Garces’ botched clearance came close to sneaking past his own clearance after a threatening cross from Alejandro Grimaldo.Spain now turn their attention to the 2026 FIFA World Cup and kickstart their Group H proceedings on Monday 15 June against Cape Verde in Atlanta, Georgia.0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 40 Просмотры 0 предпросмотр

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMBayern Munich News: FC Barcelona eyeing Lennart Karl; Real Madrid chasing three PSG players?; and MORE!CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - JUNE 05: Lennart Karl of Germany looks on during a Team Germany Training session at Soldier Field on June 05, 2026 in Chicago, Illinois. Germany will face the United States in an international friendly match on June 6, 2026. (Photo by Alexander Hassenstein/Getty Images) | Getty Images Barca eyeing Karl (ESPN)Bayern Munich phenom Lennart Karl picked up a muscle injury and will miss the World Cup, but that has not stopped FC Barcelona from admiring the youngster from afar:Barcelona have identified Bayern Munich attacking midfielder Lennart Karl and Newcastle United midfielder Lewis Miley as potential signings for the future, according to Mundo Deportivo. The LaLiga champions are reported to have been building a shortlist of the brightest prospects from across Europe. Karl, 18, has been tracked following his breakout season in the Bundesliga, while 20-year-old Miley, who made 23 Premier League appearances last season, has been added to Barça’s list for his versatility in midfield and defense. Karl was ruled out of the FIFA World Cup after picking up an injury in training on Friday. This story seems odd. Everyone knows that Karl is a Real Madrid fan! We kid, we kid.Seriously, though, Karl has that “it” that has propelled him to being worthy of drawing such attention. It did not start with FC Barcelona and will not end with the Catalans, either. Let’s just hope that Karl can make a quick recovery and be ready to show his talent once again next season. Journo shoots down Rashford idea because of salary (Sport Bild’s Christian Falk)Rumors emerged once again on Bayern Munich reportedly having interest in Manchester United attacker Marcus Rashford. However, Sport Bild journalist Christian Falk says that Rashford’s big salary is a deterrent to a deal getting done: It’s very interesting that the Marcus Rashford to Bayern rumours are up and running again! When I spoke to Bayern previously, weeks before, there was always a NOT TRUE on Marcus Rashford. However, there was the idea of signing Anthony Gordon, but the ex-Newcastle star is now at Barcelona, and so Rashford could now be on the market. I think for Bayern, it wouldn’t be a problem to pay the stated price tag of €40m [£34.5m], which Barcelona don’t appear to be able to pay all at once. For Bayern, this would be no problem. But the one big problem is the high salary, as FC Bayern doesn’t want to be forking out a big wage for a backup signing. The name is interesting, but let’s see what happens with the other candidates. I personally don’t think he’s an option for Bayern right now, but it’s worth remembering that Luis Diaz wasn’t the first-choice signing last summer (the club had three or four players ahead of him on the list). So I won’t say no for sure, but it’s not hot at the minute. Will Kvaratskhelia be the big pick up for Real? (ESPN)With Bayern Munich re-iterating that Michael Olise is not for sale, Real Madrid could look to go all-in on PSG winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia:Real Madrid are considering a move for Paris Saint-Germain winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, according to TEAMtalk. The Georgia international has emerged as a potential marquee target for the Spanish giants, with club president Florentino Pérez reported to be a keen admirer, and Pérez recently hinted he’d be willing to sanction a transfer bid in excess of €150 million for a mystery “Galactico” signing. Given Kvaratskhelia’s status as one of Europe’s top attacking talents, Madrid will almost certainly have to smash their existing transfer record to get the deal done.Again, it seems like Real Madrid is chasing a total longshot, but crazier things have happened. PSG’s midfield stars are untouchable (Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano)Speaking of Real Madrid, Paris Saint Germain is making its midfield tandem of Vitinha or João Neves off limits, too: 🚨 Paris Saint-Germain have been very clear on reports about Real Madrid and Vitinha or João Neves over the recent days……both of them are NOT for sale. Untouchable and key part of the project. 🔴🔵Augsburg wants Gregoritsch (Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg)FC Augsburg could be looking to bring back Brøndby attacker Michael Gregoritsch: 🚨🆕 FC Augsburg are working on a permanent deal for Michael Gregoritsch. Negotiations with Brøndby IF have started.Gregoritsch and head coach Manuel Baum share a strong connection. @SkySportDEInter making contingency plans in case Bisseck leaves (ESPN)Inter Milan is realizing it could lose center-back Yann Bisseck and could be ready to make contingency plans: Inter Milan are weighing up a surprise move for Manchester City defender Rúben Dias if defender Yann Bisseck leaves the Serie A club this summer, according to Corriere dello Sport. Inter view Portugal international Dias, who is under contract at the Etihad until 2029, as a potential marquee replacement and believe a deal could be structured as an initial loan with an obligation to sign him permanently. Christian Falk reports that Bayern Munich are monitoring Germany international Bisseck, who could be made available by Inter for around €40 million, opening the way for Dias to arrive. If you are looking for more Bayern Munich and German national team coverage, check out the latest episodes of Bavarian Podcast Works, which you can get on Acast, Spotify, Apple, or any leading podcast distributor… Join the conversation!Sign up for a user account and get:Comment on articles, community postsRec comments, community postsNew, improved notifications system!Fewer adsCreate community posts0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 40 Просмотры 0 предпросмотр

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMNBA Finals 2026: Wembanyama, Spurs beat Knicks in Game 3Victor Wembanyama (C) of the San Antonio Spurs and Karl-Anthony Towns of the New York Knicks jump for the opening tip-off of Game 3 of the NBA Finals on Monday at Madison Square Garden in New York. Photo by Sarah Yenesel/EPAJune 8 (UPI) -- Victor Wembanyama ensured his 8-foot wing span was a constant presence for the New York Knicks, blockading the paint and leading the San Antonio Spurs to a crucial victory in Game 3 of the NBA Finals on Monday in New York. The Spurs big man totaled 32 points, with eight rebounds, six assists, three blocks and two steals in the 115-111 victory, which snapped the Knicks' 13-game postseason winning streak."We did what we were supposed to do, but the job is absolutely not done," Wembanyama said on the ABC broadcast. "We're not even halfway. The hardest is still to come."With their first victory of the best-of-seven game series, the Spurs avoided a sweep and extended the series to at least five games. The Knicks, who held their first NBA Finals game at Madison Square Garden in 27 years, will host the Spurs in Game 4 on Wednesday.Wembanyama, who made just two shots in the first half of Game 1 and Game 2, sank his first four attempts in Game 3 and never relented.Meanwhile, the Knicks' offense was discombobulated early and messy throughout, in front of a cast of celebrity guests, including President Donald Trump, actors Timothee Chalamet, Tina Fey and Ben Stiller and baseball legend Derek Jeter, among others who could afford the most-expensive NBA Finals ticket in history.Knicks' miscues led to 13 turnovers, which translated to 21 points for the Spurs."I thought we made some strides in terms of the ball movement, playing with our teammates, setting screens, trusting the basketball would find the right guy for our shot," Spurs coach Mitch Johnson told reporters."I thought we showed better poise at times. I thought we finished the game, still with some things that need improvement, but stronger than we did the first two games. I just thought we were in attack mode, but also as a collective group."The Spurs made 9 of their first 11 shots and carried a 33-22 lead into the second quarter. The Knicks shook off their nerves over the next 12 minutes and outscored the Spurs 42-24 to carry a 64-57 lead into halftime. Forward OG Anunoby scored 11 points in the second quarter. Guard Jalen Brunson added 10.The Spurs scored first six points of the second half and exchanged the lead three times with the Knicks in the third quarter. They outscored the Knicks 35-27 in the frame to carry a 92-91 edge into the final 12 minutes.Wembanyama helped the Spurs' push their advantage to eight with less than five minutes remaining. But Brunson and Anunoby willed the Knicks back into contention, cutting the deficit to a single possession twice over the final 34 seconds.De'Aaron Fox hit a clutch jump shot with 12 seconds remaining to initially preserve the Spurs' lead. Fellow Spurs guard Stephon Castle hit two free throws on San Antonio's final possession to ice the victory.Brunson made 11 of 25 shots for 32 points, including a dozen in the fourth quarter. Anunoby scored 28 in the loss. Wembanyama poured in 10 points over the final 12 minutes.Castle chipped in 23 points. Fellow Spurs guard Dylan Harper totaled 13 points and nine rebounds off the bench. Fox and Spurs forward Julian Champagnie totaled 12 points apiece. The Spurs totaled 28 assists against just eight turnovers in the victory. New York logged 18 assists against 13 giveaways."They hit first at the beginning of the game and they hit first at halftime," Knicks coach Mike Brown said of the Spurs. "Their level of physicality was great tonight. Our attention to detail on both ends of the floor wasn't great. We allowed them to live in our paint."The Knicks (2-1) will host the Spurs (1-2) in Game 4 at 8:30 p.m. EDT Wednesday in New York. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMDonald Trump receives harsh message from AOC about NBA Finals appearanceCredit: Nathan Howard-Reuters via Imagn Images, USA TodayUnited States President Donald Trump attended Game 3 of the NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs on Monday night in New York City’s Madison Square Garden.“I’ve been a Knick fan for a long time, and I’m also a Jim Dolan fan. He’s a nice guy, OK? He spent a long time wanting to win and he’s a competitive guy and he’s got a team that’s amazing. I don’t think they’ve lost a playoff game. Can you imagine that?” Trump said on Thursday.“The answer is yes, he’s invited me and I’m going,” he added. The President’s decision to attend drew mixed feelings, but New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who also attended the game, made it clear Trump was welcome.“I will be in a very different section of the stadium (than Trump),” Mamdani said at a news conference last week via The Athletic. “And I think we look forward to welcoming any New Yorker who is excited for the Knicks to have that chance to win that championship.”However, the president may not have been as excited to see the game as the mayor had thought ahead of the game. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.Josh Allen wants to bring the Lombardi Trophy back to Western New York.Allen may not be from Buffalo, but he has become Buffalo's adopted son, and the Bills QB wants nothing more than to win a Super Bowl for the city.“This city winning a Super Bowl is the last greatest sports story in all of the world," Allen has said. "I really do believe that. I want to be the guy that does it.”That's powerful, and touching, and it probably is quite motivating for the rest of Allen's teammates. One guy thinks it's silly, though, and that's Eric Mangini.Mangini joined the First Things First show and said this: “It’s a little bit self-aggrandizing isn’t it… Let’s take the first step of getting to the Super Bowl.”MORE: Will they still be called the Chicago Bears if they play in Indiana?Does he have a point, a little bit? Sure. But come on now -- of all the people to be making this point, Mangini is a ridiculous one.He went 23-25 in three seasons as the Jets coach. He then went 10-22 in less than two seasons in charge of the Cleveland Browns.Mangini hasn't been a head coach since, and for good reason.Of all the people to knock Allen's goals, Mangini is far from the most legitimate.Yes, Allen has to get to a Super Bowl first. That doesn't mean his goal is the wrong one. He's proven he can win a lot of big games, but it hasn't worked out for him in the biggest moments, whether his fault at times or not at all at other times.Bills fans love Allen, in large part because he so fully embraces them.Mangini, far from a winner, didn't really need to chime in here at all.More NFL news:The Aaron Rodgers problem no one is talking about for the SteelersCommanders, Brandon Aiyuk are waiting for the same thingLamar Jackson has an obvious reason not to sign right nowMyles Garrett's Browns career comes to the most Cleveland of endingsThere's a risk the OBJ signing is a mistake0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 40 Просмотры 0 предпросмотр

Having to sit on the runway because of a kangaroo-related incident with the baggage handling carts? Now that is straight-up bollocks! Crikey! Mac Jones will sign a contract worth more than $30 million per season this offseasonThe 49ers’ backup quarterback, who was given a small pay raise after vastly outplaying his deal last season, will become a top free-agent target for teams that need a quarterback but have finished too far outside striking distance for a rising college quarterback in this year’s draft. Trent Williams will win the NFL’s Protector of the Year AwardThe award, which, in its infancy, will still serve as a combination of legacy acknowledgment alongside recognition of great individual play throughout a season, will acknowledge the incredible staying power of Williams, who will turn 38 just before the start of training camp.Aaron Rodgers eyes San Francisco as possible final destinationWith gap-year needs potentially developing for the Rams and Vikings, among other teams with head coaches Rodgers admires and would like to work with, the quarterback will walk away from Pittsburgh after a nine-win, nonplayoff campaign and into a summer of exploring other interests before eventually landing in training camp with either the Packers, Rams, Vikings, 49ers or Cardinals. George Kittle will not fly with the 49ers to AustraliaDespite his valiant efforts to recover from a late-season Achilles tear, the prospect of sending one of the team’s most valuable players on a 15-hour flight to Melbourne feels less than responsible.Joey Bosa and Nick Bosa will play at least five games together in 2026While Nick recently said his almost-31-year-old older brother is working on his golf game, San Francisco’s still-needy pass rush and the lingering desire to play alongside Nick will draw Joey out of his long, veteran summer. The 49ers make sense schematically and have the effective cap space to accommodate a slightly more sizable veteran salary. The 49ers finish 11-6Orr projects San Francisco to finish third in the NFC West behind the Seahawks and Rams, both of whom he has going 12-5.Most of these predictions seem pretty normal, apart from the weird ones. All signs from camp thus far have viewed Stribling as an ideal fit in the offense, while Evans will surely be used as a red zone threat this year. It would be bold for the 49ers to bring Kittle to Australia with the possibility that he could re-injury himself, so him staying home makes sense. And while a Bosa brother reunion seems unlikely, it could happen if both sides feel good about the role and the money. With the regular season only a few months away, we won't have to wait long to see if these predictions come true. This article originally appeared on Niners Wire: 10 bold NFL predictions from SI on San Francisco 49ers0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 40 Просмотры 0 предпросмотр
