Sam Levinson Emerges From 7-Year Drug Binge Horrified At What He Created
BEVERLY HILLS, CA—Staggering out into the blinding light of day, Euphoria showrunner Sam Levinson reportedly emerged from a 7-year drug binge Wednesday horrified to learn what he had created. “Wait, I did what?” said a shaky, bleary-eyed Levinson as he looked through his phone in an attempt to piece together everything that had happened since 2019, a wash of shame appearing to set in as he realized he had written, directed, and produced an entire HBO series. “Shit, shit, shit. I figured I was messed up long enough to do something stupid like call my ex, but I’m seeing all these texts saying that I turned Sydney Sweeney into a sexy giant and had her attack a skyscraper with her breasts. What the fuck? I can’t believe no one stopped me once I started writing the script! Do I not have any real friends? Oh man, I hope Zendaya isn’t mad at me.” At press time, sources confirm that Levinson had checked himself into rehab after coming across something called The Idol on his IMDb page. Amazon Employees Detail Inhumane Working Conditions On Bezos’ Human Chessboard
MIAMI—In an official filing with the U.S. Department of Labor, Amazon employees alleged Monday that they had been exposed to inhumane working conditions while staffing the human chessboard that executive chairman Jeff Bezos maintains on the grounds of his Florida compound. “We’re not allowed to take breaks of any kind,” one Amazon worker said on the condition of anonymity, claiming that human chess pieces are expected to stand motionless for more than eight hours at a time on the board’s three-by-three-foot squares and cannot move until Bezos or his opponent orders them to. “Many times, we’ve had to resort to urinating in plastic bottles inside our giant pawn costumes. Sometimes we’re out there for days because he’s away at one of his other properties, but there are cameras everywhere and he’ll dock our pay if we so much as flinch. The only time you’re allowed to be off your feet is when another piece knocks you over.” Reached for comment, an Amazon spokesperson denied the allegations, noting that employees are free to move one or two squares forward during their shift and receive plenty of exercise on occasions when one piece takes another and Bezos forces them to participate in choreographed battles to the death. Man United Add Lazio Midfielder to Their Shortlist
Man United Add Lazio Midfielder to Their ShortlistLazio’s Fisayo Dele-Bashiru has reportedly landed on the shortlist of Manchester United, who are currently revamping their midfield.Man Utd Undergoing Midfield OverhaulThe Red Devils have parted ways with Casemiro and placed Manuel Ugarte on the shortlist, leaving them with Kobbie Mainoo as the only recognised central midfielder guaranteed to play for Michael Carrick’s team next season. The Premier League giants have practically acquired Ederson’s services after reaching an agreement with the Brazilian international as well as Atalanta, but they’re still eyeing another two signings in the middle of the park.United Also Tracking Fisayo Dele-BashiruSky Sports provided the latest on Man Utd’s midfield hunt. While the reliable British source mentioned the usual suspects (Elliot Anderson, Mateus Fernandes, and Carlos Baleba), it also revealed the club’s interest in Dele-Bashiru, who is now on the watchlist. The Nigerian international is all too familiar with English football, spending his formative years at Manchester City before joining Sheffield Wednesday in 2020. The Owls released the midfielder in 2023, and he went on to enjoy a memorable Turkish experience at Hatayspor, earning a move to Lazio in the summer of 2024 for circa €5 million.Dele-Bashiru at LazioUnited’s interest in Dele-Bashiru might surprise the Biancocelesti supporters, as the player never cemented himself as a regular starter in the Italian capital, whether in his first season under Marco Baroni, or his second campaign with Maurizio Sarri in charge. Both managers praised the Lagos native for his physical attributes, but urged him to improve his tactical awareness.Dele-Bashiru still delivered occasional flashes of brilliance, especially when playing against Atalanta. Since joining Lazio, he has contributed with seven goals and four assists in 57 appearances.Would Lazio Sell Dele-BashiruIn recent days, it was revealed that club president Claudio Lotito and sporting director Angelo Fabiani have asked Gennaro Gattuso to help the Nigerian take his game to the next level. But faced with a tempting offer, the hierarchy is very likely to sell the midfielder whose contract will expire in June 2028, especially considering his secondary role at the club.

Rams are clear Super Bowl favorites after busy offseason. Recent history says that means very little
The Los Angeles Rams seem unbeatable this upcoming season. The Rams were the second-best team in the NFL last season, and not far behind the Seattle Seahawks. Then they traded for two defensive stars, cornerback Trent McDuffie and Myles Garrett. The Rams made McDuffie the highest paid cornerback in NFL history and Garrett just set the NFL's single-season sack record. Either addition would be the highlight of the offseason for most teams. The Rams got both. There is no other logical choice as this season's Super Bowl favorite. Oddsmakers agree. They have made the Rams a significant favorite to win Super Bowl LXI. At a sportsbook like BetMGM, the Rams are 5-to-1 to win the Super Bowl and every other team is at least double that, at 10-to-1 or longer. It's hard to argue against that big of a gap. The Rams are absolutely loaded. And yet, being the preseason favorite means almost nothing when it comes to actually winning the Super Bowl.Myles Garrett joined the Rams in one of the biggest trades in NFL history. (Photo by David Crane/MediaNews Group/Los Angeles Daily News via Getty Images)MediaNews Group/Los Angeles Daily News via Getty Images via Getty ImagesPreseason Super Bowl favorites don't often winThis fact is shocking: Starting with the 1995 season, only four preseason Super Bowl favorites have won the championship. The four teams that won the title after being favorites, according to Covers.com, were the 2006 Colts, 2016 Patriots, 2018 Patriots and 2023 Chiefs. Four of the last 31 preseason favorites (12.9%) winning it all is a surprisingly low hit rate.Play 2026 Soccer Pick 'Em with FOX One and make your picks for the world's biggest soccer tournamentLast season, the Seahawks won despite being 60-to-1 odds before the season. That's rare, but five of the last six champions had at least 10-to-1 odds to win it all. If anyone but the Rams win this season, it will be six of the last seven. There's no great reason to pick against the Rams to win the Super Bowl. They bring back Matthew Stafford, the league's reigning MVP, with elite receivers in Puka Nacua and Davante Adams. Los Angeles will have a defense that wasn't bad last season and then added Garrett, the best player in the NFL, and an elite cornerback in McDuffie as well as Jaylen Watson, a free-agent cornerback who also comes from the Chiefs. Watson got a three-year, $51 million deal. He and McDuffie fix the Rams' biggest weakness. The roster is impressive. L.A. is the unquestioned favorite. The Rams should win the Super Bowl, which will be a pseudo home game at SoFi Stadium. But it doesn't often work out that cleanly. What could get in the Rams' way?The most obvious answer to why favorites don't win as often as you'd think is injuries. It doesn't take much for a team's fortunes to turn quickly with one key injury or a few injuries at the same position. The Rams could slip quickly if there's an injury to Stafford, or even Nacua or Adams considering there's not much depth behind them. Losing Garrett would be tough to overcome too, like the Green Bay Packers losing Micah Parsons last season after a big trade for him. There are other potential issues out of the Rams' control. News that offensive tackle Alaric Jackson was arrested for suspicion of felony domestic violence could affect the Rams on the field. Nacua spent time in a holistic rehabilitation facility this past offseason. There are reasons outside of injury that could throw off a powerhouse Rams team. And just because a team is the best in the NFL doesn't mean it won't lose in the playoffs. The Rams might be leading the NFL pack but there are plenty of other teams capable of winning a Super Bowl. Seattle, in the Rams' own division, has every reason to believe it can repeat. The margins in the NFL are slim and in a one-and-done postseason format, any team can lose. If the 2007 Patriots could lose before winning a Super Bowl, so can the 2026 Rams. The Rams became the story of the NFL offseason with the Garrett trade. They will enter the season with a Super Bowl or bust expectation. The Rams have done everything they can to win a championship. But as we've seen, that doesn't guarantee anything.

2026 World Cup viewer's guide: Format, new rules, predictions, how to watch and everything you need to know before kickoff
The 2026 World Cup is the first men's World Cup in the United States since the 1994 tournament, and it's unlike any World Cup ever played. Here's everything you need to know to be ready when the tournament kicks off this week.Where and when is the 2026 World Cup?The tournament begins Thursday with Mexico hosting South Africa at Mexico City's famed Estadio Azteca. The first game in the United States is the following day, as the U.S. faces Paraguay at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, on Friday. The group stage runs through June 27, with the first off day coming July 8 before the quarterfinals. The final is Sunday, July 19 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.Kickoff times range from noon ET to midnight ET, with four games per day from June 13 to June 23 and six games per day for group finales from June 24 to June 27.This World Cup will be the first one that is played in three countries, as the U.S., Canada and Mexico serve as co-hosts. Canada (two cities) and Mexico (three) will each host 13 games, and the remaining 78 matches are in 11 cities across the U.S., including all eight games from the quarterfinals onward.Tournament formatWith 48 teams, this is the biggest World Cup ever, a 50% increase from the 2022 tournament. The expansion means 104 total matches, 40 more than the previous World Cup. Play 2026 Soccer Pick 'Em with FOX One and make your picks for the world's biggest soccer tournamentAs usual, the 48 teams are divided into groups of four for the 72 games in the group stage. Following round-robin group play, the top two teams in each group advance to the knockout stage, as do the eight best third-place teams. In a change this year, the first group tiebreaker is not goal difference, but rather head-to-head result, followed by head-to-head goal difference and head-to-head goals in the case of a tie between more than two teams. If teams are even on the head-to-head tiebreakers, overall group goal difference is next, followed by total goals scored, then fewest disciplinary points (a scoring system for yellow and red cards). With the expanded World Cup comes an expanded knockout stage — beginning with the Round of 32 and lasting through the final — with extra time and penalty kicks deciding which team advances if the score is tied after regulation.Hydration breaks will feature prominently this summer — a concession to a warming planet that FIFA has somehow also managed to monetize. What else is new at this World Cup?Beyond the format, a handful of rule changes are designed to keep the games moving, and one change will pause the action in each half:Every match will have mandatory three-minute hydration breaks midway through each half. This will allow players a brief respite from the hot conditions, giving media rights-holders an opportunity to sell additional ads.Players have five seconds to restart play on dead balls including throw-ins and goal kicks. Players have 10 seconds to leave the field when substituted.A player who receives medical treatment must stay off the field for one minute, with the exception of players who are injured on plays that received a card. The team captain is the only player allowed to approach the referee and protest or question a decision. Other players who do so may receive a yellow card. The Video Assistant Referee may review second yellow cards and corner kicks, in the case of clear and obvious errors. How to watch the 2026 World CupIn the United States, all 104 matches are in English on Fox (70) and FS1 (34), and all are streamed on Fox One.For those who prefer Spanish-language broadcasts, 92 games will be on Telemundo, with the other 12 matches (all simultaneous group finales) on Universo.Which countries are the favorites? The usual suspects for the most part, headed by five previous winners. 2022 runner-up France (+450) and reigning European champion Spain are the top two betting favorites, followed by England (+650), defending champion Argentina (+800) and five-time winner Brazil (+800). The next tier includes always-talented Portugal (10-1), a Germany side that has shockingly gone out in two straight group stages (14-1), Netherlands (20-1), Erling Haaland's Norway (25-1) and a Belgium team in transition (33-1).Who are the Cinderellas? This is the ninth men's World Cup played in the Americas, and seven of the previous eight have been won by South American teams, with Germany winning in Brazil in 2014 as the lone exception. The hot weather is generally more challenging for European teams to handle, so watch out for a sleeper South American team to make a run, perhaps Colombia (40-1 to win the title), Uruguay (50-1) or Ecuador (66-1).Get full coverage of the 2026 World Cup in our soccer hubAll but two World Cup host nations have made the knockout stage, so the United States (40-1) or Mexico (66-1) could make a deep run like unheralded South Korea did as co-host in 2002.If you're looking for an Asian team to pull upsets this tournament, go with a Japan side that knocked off Germany and Spain at the 2022 World Cup and has a roster full of players from Europe's top leagues.Even with aging stars, Croatia has to be considered a Cinderella again, after finishing runner-up in 2018 and third in 2022. Switzerland and Türkiye are among the other solid European teams that have talent to make noise.Morocco has to be on the sleeper list as well after making the semis four years ago, and fellow Africa Cup of Nations finalist Senegal also has the right mix of veterans and youth to do likewise. Folarin Balogun has been the USMNT's most reliable scorer, but the question is whether he can carry that form into June. What are expectations for the United States? The U.S. men's national team is currently 16th in FIFA's rankings and has the 11th-best title odds at +4000. Both those numbers are optimistic about where the U.S. ranks in the global pecking order. But playing at home in a group without a traditional power, the U.S. is still the Group D favorite, and a group-stage elimination would be an utter catastrophe. Realistic expectations have the U.S. finishing top two in the group and winning a favorable Round-of-32 matchup, then running into a top-10 caliber team in the Round of 16. Advancing in the knockout stage is far from a given for the U.S., which has done so only once in World Cup history (2002).Who are the stars to watch? With 48 teams and most prominent soccer nations present (apologies to Italy, Nigeria, Cameroon, Poland and others), this World Cup will feature a boatload of stars from the past, present and future.Making their last standTwo of the all-time greats are poised to be the first men to play in six World Cups. Argentina's Lionel Messi, who turns 39 on June 24, won the Golden Ball as the best player at the 2022 tournament, tallying seven goals and three assists. Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo is already the only man to score at five World Cups, as the 41-year-old strives for the one major international trophy that has eluded him.At age 40, Croatia's Luka Modrić will be back for a fifth World Cup, assuming he recovers from cheekbone surgery in time. Modric won the Golden Ball at the 2018 tournament, where Croatia was runner-up to France, and he led the team to a third-place finish in 2022.Tips of talented spearsThe tournament favorites are filled with attackers who could all shine. France's Kylian Mbappé already has 12 World Cup goals, tied for sixth-most all-time with Pelé, and Mbappé needs five more goals to break Miroslav Klose's men's World Cup record. France also features reigning Ballon d'Or winner Ousmane Dembélé, who has not scored in 11 previous World Cup games but has over 50 goals for PSG the last two seasons.Lamine Yamal (18 years old) was runner-up to Dembélé for last year's Ballon d'Or, after winning two trophies with Barcelona and the Euro 2024 title with Spain. He'll be in a fitness race after suffering a hamstring injury in late April.Harry Kane has over 50 goals for Bayern Munich this season alone, and he remains England's best option up top. England's career goals leader won the Golden Boot as the top scorer at the 2018 World Cup, and he's two goals shy of tying Gary Lineker's English record of 10 World Cup goals. As usual, Brazil has plenty of attacking options, led by a pair of La Liga stalwarts. Vinícius Júnior has over 125 goals for Real Madrid, but he's rarely replicated his club form on the international stage. Raphinha led Brazil with six goals in qualifying, but he has not played for Barcelona since injuring his hamstring during the March international break. Can they carry their teams to the promised land?Bruno Fernandes is hardly the only weapon on a loaded Portugal team, but he's the engine that will make them go, much like he does for Manchester United. The best pure striker in the world, Man City's Erling Haaland has Norway at the World Cup for the first time since 1998. He scored nearly half of Norway's 34 goals in qualifying, with 16 goals in eight games.Mo Salah is leaving Liverpool after this season, and this may be the last World Cup for the 33-year-old. He'll look to lead Egypt to a first-ever World Cup win in the nation's fourth appearance.Four years ago, right back Achraf Hakimi helped make Morocco the first African team to reach the World Cup semifinals. He's won a cabinet full of trophies with PSG, and he also led Morocco to the Africa Cup of Nations final in January.Club stars ready to shine on the international stageWith Mbappé and Dembélé, France doesn't need more attacking weapons, but they have plenty of others in the squad. Bayern Munich's Michael Olise is among this year's Ballon d'Or favorites after reaching 20 goals and 20 assists this season. Rayan Cherki has shined for Manchester City this season, piling up double digits in both goals and assists. If you watched the U.S.-Belgium friendly in March, you saw Jeremy Doku wreak havoc down the left side. He's done the same for Man City this season, and he leads a new generation of Belgian stars. If Colombia does make a run, Luis Suárez may become as well-known as his teammate Luis Díaz. Suarez has topped 30 goals for Portuguese club Sporting this season, and he had four goals vs. Venezuela in a qualifier last September. The U.S. men's national team will go as far as Christian Pulisic will take them this summer at the World Cup.Americans to watchMost of the U.S. stars are back from the 2022 World Cup, where the U.S. made the Round of 16 before losing 3-1 to Netherlands. Christian Pulisic remains the face of the team, though he's been slumping for club and country lately. Pulisic hasn't scored in his last eight caps, the longest drought of his U.S. career, and he's gone over four months without scoring for AC Milan (as of May 1), last notching a goal back on Dec. 28. Weston McKennie and Tyler Adams are expected to man the U.S. midfield. McKennie has nine goals and six assists while playing all over the field for Juventus this season. As long as he's healthy, Adams stars for Premier League club Bournemouth and puts out fires from his defensive midfield spot. Antonee Robinson may be the most irreplaceable U.S. player, as the Fulham left back has been linked with a move to Manchester United and Liverpool this summer. Two faces who may be new to casual fans are Chris Richards, who starts regularly for Premier League club Crystal Palace and is the best U.S. center back option, and forward Folarin Balogun, who scored in eight straight Ligue 1 games for Monaco this season.Put your predictions to the testReady to put your World Cup knowledge to the test this summer? 2026 Soccer Pick 'Em with FOX One is a new free-to-play Yahoo Fantasy game where fans make picks each round, earn points and climb the leaderboard.Play 2026 Soccer Pick 'Em with FOX One and make your picks for the world's biggest soccer tournamentThere are plenty of ways to get in on the fun. Sights and sounds from day one of Browns mandatory minicamp
The Cleveland Browns took the field for the first of three mandatory minicamp practices this week on Tuesday, the last before training camp at the end of next month. The quarterback competition continues as Shedeur Sanders got the bulk of the work with the first team. Head coach Todd Monken talked about the plan to have Deshaun Watson get the bulk of the first-team work on Wednesday before splitting reps in the final practice on Thursday. Monken seems to be in no rush to decide who he plans to name the week one starter and will likely wait until training camp to figure that out, which I believe is the best course of action. Making a decision before any pads come on seems rushed. Wide receivers Denzel Boston and Isaiah Bond continue to make attention-grabbing plays, hopefully a good sign that the position group will be much better than last season. Here are some of the sights and sounds from Tuesday's practice. Monken said the QB rotation will flip tomorrow and Watson will get the No. 1 reps. This photojournalist usually shot crime scenes. But he took this “joyful” picture of 1978 Pride.
LGBTQ Nation will be sharing your pictures of Pride throughout May and June. Submit your own if you want to be included! In June 1978, freelance news photographer Mark Ivins was on assignment for the Village Voice, covering the Christopher Street Liberation Day March in New York City. It wasn’t Ivins’ usual beat — he was assigned maybe two or three of the marches over several years, shooting for the iconic NYC weekly — but the straight photographer did chronicle life in the heart of the LGBTQ+ community in Greenwich Village and points west, in the Meat Packing District and the dilapidated piers lining the Hudson River, through the 1970s. Related She came out at age 11.5 in her military family. Her supportive parents took her to Pride. Life as well as death. Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today His archive is full of the kind of crime scene photos rarely seen in mainstream outlets today: strewn, bloodied bodies on cobblestone streets, some in the vicinity of storied bars like the Anvil, Badlands, and the Mineshaft’s “Private Club.” At “the piers,” as they were known colloquially among the gay men that cruised them, and along the elevated tracks of what’s now known as the High Line, Ivins captured the opposite of lifeless bodies on his Olympus OM2 camera and Kodachrome film. He wasn’t always welcome, he says. On one walk through the piers, something caught Ivins’ attention “out of the corner of my eye.” “While I was raising my camera, a very large man dressed in full leather offered that he would ‘throw me in the Hudson River’ if I took that photograph. I decided not to find out. I don’t know what I had seen.” Several blocks uptown on the last Sunday in June, 1978, Ivins had his camera out again, this time among “tens of thousands of homosexual men and women” — in the words of The New York Times the next day — for the end of “Gay and Lesbian Pride Week” in New York City. Mayor Ed Koch had made the proclamation the previous Monday. Like every march since its founding on the first anniversary of Stonewall, the 9th annual Christopher Street Liberation Day March was bigger than the last. That year, it started at the Stonewall Inn and made its way up Fifth Avenue to Sheep’s Meadow in Central Park. About 100,000 attendees were on hand by the time that Grace Jones took the stage in the late afternoon. With his “Pride Week” proclamation, Mayor Koch endorsed a proposed New York City law against discrimination “on the basis of sexual orientation.” “‘Hundreds of thousands’ of homosexuals live and work in New York City,” the Times quoted Koch as saying. What the mayor didn’t mention publicly at the time was that he was one of them. Marchers rallied for the new law on their way up Fifth Avenue. “Gay rights, right now!” marchers chanted. “2, 4, 6, 8 — Separate church and state!” and a variation on the latter: “2, 4, 6, 8 — We don’t overpopulate!” One early float in the history of the march that year featured the Church of the Beloved Disciple, with robed officiants proclaiming themselves “the world’s first gay Catholic church.” St. Patrick’s enormous doors to Fifth Avenue remained closed that day. Also hostile to the gay throng parading through the heart of Manhattan: Orthodox Jews in New York City.“The vast majority of New Yorkers,” said Rabbi Abraham Hecht of the Rabbinical Alliance of America, “look upon the members of the gay movement with pity and disgust.” By Ivins’ recollection, he captured his iconic “Gay Love” image from the march at the corner of 30th Street and 5th Avenue — “I think.” A closer look reveals New York City’s period taxi-yellow street signs read “E 34th ST” and “5 AVE.” There’s a telephone booth in front of the city’s now-defunct Chemical Bank. Silky gold short-shorts are in evidence. And a lot of long curly hair, at least one web belt, and an early Elton John lookalike are more clues to the time and place. At least one banner was timeless: “Racism, sexism, and anti-gay bigotry hurt all poor working people.” Ivins didn’t have a lot of thoughts on the role the march had enshrining an iconic moment in LGBTQ+ history, or the Gay Liberation interregnum, those years between Stonewall and the HIV/AIDS epidemic turned out to be. “I can’t really say; I was so busy shooting.” What Ivins did pick up on that sunny day in June was joy. It was “Joyful, up,” he says more than once. His picture “tells the story without words.” Subscribe to the LGBTQ Nation newsletter and be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

The Most Unbreakable Records In Sports History
Despite advances in technology, training, and performance optimization, some achievements in sports have stood the test of time. The following athletic records remain unbroken. Randy Johnson In 2002, the Big Unit shattered the MLB record for most birds killed by a starting pitcher in a regular-season game when his fastball exploded over 43 pigeons. Tom Brady The legendary Patriots quarterback won a record seven Super Bowls, which is easily the most Super Bowls ever won by a divorced man. American Pharoah In a feat many claim is more impressive than his Triple Crown win, the thoroughbred clinched horse racing’s record for most jockeys eaten when he devoured four adult men in a single paddock attack. Deion Sanders Prime Time remains the only athlete in history to hit a home run, score a touchdown, and give up 33 goals as an NHL goalie in the same week, a display of cross-sport dominance that will almost certainly never be matched. John Isner and Nicolas Mahut In 2010, Isner and Mahut made tennis history after a spectator snuck a non-Newtonian time dilator into the stadium and their first-round Wimbledon match lasted over 400 years. CC Sabathia This Hall of Famer holds baseball’s all-time record for most sunflower-seed shells trapped in a neck roll, with 183. Ken Griffey Sr. and Ken Griffey Jr. The pair jointly holds the professional sports record for most time spent by a father-son duo discreetly glimpsing each other’s penises in the locker-room shower, with a cumulative 259 minutes—255 minutes longer than active leaders LeBron and Bronny James. O.J. Simpson No other athlete has won both the Heisman Trophy and an acquittal for stabbing his ex-wife 12 times. The post The Most Unbreakable Records In Sports History appeared first on The Onion.

Mom Casually Mentions Her Bunco Group Threw Molotov Cocktails At ICE Last Week
MINNEAPOLIS—Nonchalantly bringing up the act of violent resistance while discussing a fun evening she had with her friends, local mom Rebecca Peters casually mentioned Wednesday to her son Miles that her bunco group had thrown Molotov cocktails at ICE the previous week. “Yeah, me and the bunco gals lit a few liquor bottles on fire and tossed them at ICE agents the other day, and I won $5 in our game!” said Peters, adding that her “lucky roll” of three sixes was the “highlight” of a lively Friday spent drinking mojitos and immolating masked federal immigration officers. “Did any of the agents die? Oh, I don’t know, sweetie. I didn’t really stick around long enough to notice. Sandra stabbed one of those fellas in the throat, I think, and he didn’t get up. But like I was saying, I’ll be hosting bunco next week, and you should come! We need someone to fill in for Leslie after she threw out her back tossing that Molotov. Can I write you in as a ‘maybe?’” At press time, Peters insisted that if Miles couldn’t make it for bunco, he should at least join them for making pipe bombs. While there is not currently an FDA-approved treatment for getting hard at work during a meeting about quarterly revenue targets right before you have to stand up to present, this off-label use of a plain, navy-blue folder is a perfectly safe and effective solution that will last for hours when held properly in front of your groin area. Made of all-natural materials that will never irritate your skin as you blush and blurt out, ‘Wait! Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The Los Angeles Dodgers are, once again, the top World Series contenders in Major League Baseball. It should come as no surprise, as this club is stacked from top to bottom. But if there is any issue with the roster, the Dodgers' farm system and depth chart are strong enough for the team to go out and add some top-tier talent by the MLB trade deadline. As ESPN's Bradford Doolittle highlighted, the Dodgers can also play spoiler in the trade market this year. How they can do so is simple: trade for the players their top competition might be looking to add.Dodgers can play spoiler in trade market with savvy moves"That said, the Dodgers can play spoiler in the trade market, as much to hinder other contenders as to help themselves," Doolittle writes.Los Angeles does have a few needs worth exploring, with left field, some extra infield depth, and more help in the starting rotation all being worthwhile spots to upgrade at.But this team doesn't need to make any moves, and they would still be the top World Series contenders. Browns HC Todd Monken makes massive statement on team's QB battle
The Cleveland Browns find themselves in familiar territory this offseason: in need of nailing down who exactly their starting quarterback will be for the 2026 season. Both Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson are the two seen as the front-runners for the job, and head coach Todd Monken had stated that he wanted to have a starter nailed down by the end of mandatory minicamp. However, speaking to the media after the first day of mandatory minicamp yesterday, Monken has had a change of heart. He is not ready to name a quarterback who will see the majority of the reps with the starters just yet. Here is what Monken had to say about where he is with naming his starting quarterback:“I really don’t know. I’m not going to name a No. 1 ... chances are, I will not... Now, once we get to the fall, we’ll have to dissect the reps how we see fit. I just don’t see it after the way Shedeur’s played and Deshaun’s played, they’ve both played well enough to earn the right to compete to start.”So, the massive update here is that there is no update despite Monken's earlier insistence that he wanted to have a QB1 by the end of mandatory minicamp. We are officially headed for a quarterback battle in training camp between Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson. This article originally appeared on Browns Wire: Browns HC Todd Monken makes massive statement on team's QB battle

VAR, timewasting and subs - World Cup law changes explained
Michael Oliver is one of 51 referees who will take charge of games at the 2026 World Cup [Getty Images]The 2026 World Cup is going to be unprecedented for a variety of reasons - and that includes the sheer number of law changes. Fifa has introduced 11 measures specifically for the tournament.Pierluigi Collina, the head of referees, is determined to speed up the matches and to reduce the potential for match-changing mistakes. But get used to them, because you will see most applied in the Premier League, English Football League and Scottish Premiership next season. There are new powers for the video assistant referee (VAR), a whole host of measures to protect the tempo of the game and a couple of adjustments around player behaviour. Here is what you need to look out for and how the new laws will work.Time-saving measures for goal-kicks, throw-ins and substitutionsFixing timewasting has been one of Collina's top issues for quite a few years. At the Qatar World Cup in 2022, the Italian told his officials to be precise and add everything on to stoppage time. The opening matches all exceeded 100 minutes, with 24 minutes added on across both halves for England's 6-2 win over Iran. For this World Cup, the plan is to make sure players get on with the game and save lost time this way.The idea is not strict enforcement, but deterrent measures to alter player behaviour.Countdowns for goal-kicks and throw-ins (five seconds): If a player deliberately delays the restart of play, a goal-kick could become a corner or the throw given to the opposition. The count will not begin when the ball goes out of play. A referee will choose to activate it if a player is taking too long.Like the eight-second countdown after a goalkeeper has caught the ball, the referee will visibly make a count by moving an arm up and down. This law change should be a deterrent to goalkeepers who take a long time over their kicks towards the end of games.Previously, the only tool a referee would really have is to show one yellow card. And the keeper might just keep on doing it knowing an official is not likely to book them twice and be forced to send them off.It is hoped that conceding a corner which could lead to conceding a goal is a more effective deterrent. Time-limited substitutions (10 seconds): Substituted players have 10 seconds to leave the field at the nearest point. If they fail to do so, the substitute cannot enter the field for at least one minute and the team must play with 10 players. There are a couple of exemptions - if a player is injured or there are security concerns about where they can go off, though the latter should not be an issue at the World Cup.The new law says that the substitute will not be able to come on until play next stops. That means a team could in theory be left with 10 players for several minutes.Take the international friendly between Japan and Iceland on 31 May.An Iceland player took too long to leave the field, so the team had to play with 10 men for more than two minutes. The first time play stopped was when Koki Ogawa scored the only goal of the game for Japan. The idea is not to make teams play with 10 men, but to make it such a clear deterrent that players do not waste time on substitutions. Physio on? Players must now stay off for one minutePlayers who required treatment in the World Cup warm-ups were the first to experience being told to stay off the field for one minute [Getty Images]For a couple of seasons fans of Premier League and EFL teams have been used to players staying off the field for 30 seconds after the physio has been on the pitch. Now the time has been upped to one minute. And not just for the World Cup, it will be in the laws of the game too. Every league and competition must apply it next season.Fifa had trialled two minutes at the Arab Cup in December, but the domestic leagues pushed back on that. Eventually, one minute was agreed as a compromise. There are some concerns that one minute is too long, that it could penalise players who are genuinely injured. Or that a player could be less likely to ask for the physio in fear of hampering their own team. There are a handful of exceptions when a player would be able to come straight back on: a goalkeeper is injured a goalkeeper and an outfield player or players from the same team have collideda severe injury has occurred, especially a head injury (e.g. concussion) a player is injured and the opponent is booked or sent offa penalty has been awarded and the injured player will be the takerNo more goalkeeper tactical timeouts?Leeds United boss Daniel Farke accused Manchester City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma of feigning injury to create a tactical stoppage during a Premier League game last season [Getty Images]The 'goalkeeper tactical timeout' has become a hot topic in recent seasons. It is used by a manager to get new instructions to his players, or to impact the momentum of the opposition. The goalkeeper sits on the turf and signals for the physio, the other players rush to the technical area for a team talk. As soon as the coach has got his message across, the keeper stands up to play on.Football's lawmakers have so far failed to agree on measures to tackle it.But Collina has told coaches of the 48 World Cup teams that players will be stopped from going to the technical area when goalkeepers are injured. This only tackles part of the problem. It will not stop the tactic being used simply to break up the momentum of the other team late in the game. The effectiveness is open to debate with coaches having a three-minute hydration break in each half as a natural timeout.Just how officials will be able to enforce it is open to question, too, as they will not be able to show yellow cards or take disciplinary action.Does referee case show Fifa has lost control of its own World Cup?No more delayed flag? Fifa adds new offside tech for World CupWhy super-sized and politicised World Cup comes at a costMore VAR, and lots of itIt is not the kind of news most fans want to hear, but there are going to be four new areas covered by VAR.Check that a corner is correct: The VAR will make sure that a corner has been correctly awarded. But they won't do the same for goal-kicks which should be corners.Fifa says this cannot cause a delay and must be completed before the corner is taken. On average, there is a 25-second delay and Fifa believes this should be enough time.Fifa is aided by having a bigger VAR team than other competitions. It also have new 'out of bounds' technology which will indicate who touched the ball last, though it might be too slow to be used to fix a corner. This is only a competition opt-in, so it is not expected to be adopted in the Premier League.Players sent off for two yellow cards: The VAR will be able to look at the second caution for players shown a red card. There can be no review for potential second bookings for players on a yellow.Importantly, it has to be a clear error to give the foul and not just a subjective difference of opinion about the card. Attacking foul before the ball is in play: The Ifab has given Fifa permission to allow a VAR review if it directly leads to a goal, penalty or disciplinary sanction.Collina used an example involving England from March, when Adam Wharton blocked the run of Uruguay's Jose Maria Gimenez before Ben White scored. Then the VAR could not disallow the goal, but they will be able to at the World Cup.The restart would be a retake of the corner. The logic remains that a free-kick cannot be awarded if the ball is not in play. For this reason the VAR will not be able to review defensive fouls before the ball is in play because it is not possible to give a penalty. This will be reassessed by the Ifab after the tournament.Mistaken identity: This is an incredibly niche addition which Collina requested. If a player is booked or sent off but the foul was actually committed by the opposition team, the decision can be changed. Powers to combat poor player behaviourFifa was unhappy with two high-profile disciplinary incidents earlier this year and was eager to avoid a repeat at the World Cup.Both are competition opt-ins for the tournament.Player covers their mouth in a confrontational situation: A referee can send the player off. This refers to Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni being given a six-match ban by Uefa after he admitted using homophobic language towards Real Madrid's Vinicius Jr during a Champions League match in February."If the conversation is friendly, they can continue to do it without any problem," Collina explained."When the conversation is confrontational, covering the mouth means that you are doing something very wrong, potentially, and the sanction is the red card."Player leaves the field to protest a referee's decision: The referee can also now show a red card card. This is a reaction to the controversy in the final of the Africa Cup of Nations final on 18 January.Senegal beat Morocco 1-0 in a match that was overshadowed when the Senegalese players refused to play after the hosts were awarded a stoppage-time penalty with the match goalless.Following a delay of around 17 minutes, the players did eventually return. Real Madrid forward Brahim Diaz missed the penalty, then Villarreal midfielder Pape Gueye scored the winning goal in the fourth minute of extra-time.In March, Morocco were declared the winners after the Confederation of African Football (Caf) overturned the result.World Cup fixtures and group standingsHow to watch the World Cup on the BBCEverything you need to know about the World Cup

Sophie Cunningham shuts down Fever controversy with blunt message after Caitlin Clark game-winner originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham has never been afraid to speak her mind, and this week she used social media to put an end to a growing narrative surrounding head coach Stephanie White. Following Indiana's dramatic 78-76 victory over the Washington Mystics on Monday night, some fans became convinced that Caitlin Clark's game-winning basket happened despite White's instructions rather than because of them. Cunningham quickly made it clear that wasn't the case.As speculation continued to spread online, the veteran guard stepped in with a direct response that left little room for interpretation.Sophie Cunningham defends Stephanie White after viral fan theoryThe controversy stemmed from a postgame Instagram carousel shared by Cunningham after Indiana's thrilling win in Washington. With 4.3 seconds remaining, Cunningham delivered the inbound pass that found Clark for the game-winning jumper. The sequence instantly became one of the Fever's biggest highlights of the young season. However, one image included in Cunningham's post led some fans to believe the players may have ignored White's instructions on the final possession. That theory gained traction quickly across social media. Cunningham wasn't interested in letting the rumor continue."You guys read too much into things," Cunningham wrote on X. That clip sparked widespread discussion about the relationship between the Fever superstar and her coach. Both White and Clark addressed the situation afterward, explaining that the interaction was simply a reflection of their competitive personalities and shared desire to win. White dismissed any suggestion of a problem, while Clark noted that passion and accountability are part of what makes successful teams work.Cunningham's latest comments add another voice from inside the organization rejecting claims of tension between players and coaches.MORE: Caitlin Clark's three-word message to Sophie Cunningham says everything about Fever's chemistryFever looking to build momentumThe Fever improved to 6-5 with Monday's victory and have now won consecutive games heading into a highly anticipated matchup against the Chicago Sky. Dream's Angel Reese gets her revenge vs. Sky in a way only she can
Dream's Angel Reese gets her revenge vs. Sky in a way only she can originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. This was an Angel Reese night from start to finish. All eyes were on the talented third-year forward as she played against her former Chicago Sky for the first time since they traded her to the Atlanta Dream, and in the end, the Dream pulled out an 82-75 win on Tuesday night. And if you were picturing a Reese stat line for the occasion, it'd look a lot like what she finished with.Reese totaled 17 points and 17 rebounds, tying Blake Griffin for the most double-doubles through a player's first 75 games in either the NBA or the WNBA since the W's founding. Not many players are walking double-doubles, let alone walking 17-17s, but somehow it made perfect sense that Reese had that kind of night.MORE: Olivia Miles puts Azzi Fudd in a blender in battle of top WNBA draft picksReese shot 5-for-12 from the floor, including an encouraging 1-for-2 from 3-point range and 6-for-6 from the foul line. She dished out four assists, although those came with six turnovers. Reese also nabbed two steals.Intriguingly, Reese was a plus-18 for the night. The next closest player was a plus-9 from Naz Hillmon, so Reese really made her 35 minutes count. The Sky's frontcourt of Kamilla Cardoso (13 points, 2 rebounds) and Azura Stevens (8 points, 7 rebounds) had tame nights, so Reese certainly got to enjoy this one.The Dream also improved to 8-3 with the win. An uber-talented, balanced starting five all scored between 14 and 17 points on Tuesday. The Sky are now 4-8, and while they didn't have a winning record with Reese, either, the big lefty certainly must be glad that she's elsewhere this season.MORE: Caitlin Clark's game-winning 3 captures commercial magic

Cops Keep Getting Arrested for Using Flock to Stalk People
For months during the summer of 2024, Jarmarus Brown, an Orange City, Florida police officer, ran his ex-girlfriend's license plate through the Flock automated license plate reader (ALPR) system lookup database at least 69 times. He searched for the license plate belonging to her mom at least 24 times, and searched for the license plate belonging to her dad at least 15 times. Brown’s searches were happening so often, and were so commonplace, that even one of his colleagues noticed Brown researching his ex-girlfriend's whereabouts while the law enforcement officers sat in their police cruisers, according to court records obtained by 404 Media.“While they were sitting there, Officer [Shadrich] King noticed Jarmarus was on the Flock system and a license plate reader image of [Brown’s ex-girlfriend] was on the screen,” a police affidavit about Brown’s behavior obtained by 404 Media reads. “Officer King said he mentioned to Jarmarus that he needed to stop running her vehicle in that system because he could get in trouble. Jarmarus responded saying that he knew that, and he was going to stop.” Flock’s automated license plate readers document every car that drives past them, creating a broad network of people’s movements around the country. Police can then look up license plates to learn where a specific car and, by extension, person, has traveled over time. On another occasion, Brown told King that he believed his ex was lying about her whereabouts. She “told Jarmarus she was at her house with her mother, but Jarmarus knew for a fact she was not. When questioned by Officer King as to how he knew for a fact she was lying, Jarmarus said he used the Flock system and saw that her vehicle was elsewhere,” the affidavit reads. “Jarmarus then asked Officer King if he wanted to join him on a ‘stakeout’ to try to see where her vehicle was located.” According to Brown’s ex-girlfriend, while they were dating he would “constantly require [her] to either be on FaceTime with him or be on the phone with him, even while she was working […] Jarmarus would try to control aspects of [her] life, such as the amount of makeup she would wear and the length of her fingernails.” According to the affidavit, Brown’s stalking extended beyond license place lookups; at one point while they were dating, he put an Apple AirTag in her wallet. But the bulk of his surveillance came through Flock, the affidavit says, noting that he kept “randomly showing up at the places she was at.” The affidavit states Brown told investigators that “he would occasionally run her tag through Flock to track her whereabouts” because he believed she was lying to him. “It was dumb as hell on my end, emotions flowing, mind going,” he told investigators. The investigators ultimately determined Brown “knowingly and intentionally accessed the password protected computer systems, Flock and DAVID [a Florida DMV vehicle information database], to run the license plates of vehicles [she] frequently drove, for his own personal reasons. There was no work related, justifiable, reasons to do so, other than to track [her] whereabouts.” Brown was ultimately charged with stalking and hacking-related charges; he served one day in prison and was sentenced to five years of probation. Brown’s case was not a one-off. Local news reports from around the country repeatedly detail police abusing the Flock surveillance systemic order to stalk their partners or ex-partners. The contours of each story are much the same, with the police officer in question using their access to the system to repeatedly track a specific person over the course of weeks or months. The cases highlight the fact that Flock can be used to track the whereabouts of individual people, that police do not get a warrant in order to use the system, and that, if they have access to the system, they have the technical ability to look up any license plate they want for any reason they want. An April study by the civil rights group Institute for Justice found that at least 18 police officers have been caught around the country using Flock to stalk a romantic interest in the last few years; another database, called the ALPR Abuse Library, has documented 20 specific cases of “stalking/targeting” around the country. The known cases of police stalking are almost certainly a vast underreporting of the overall abuse, because they largely include only cases in which the behavior was so egregious that it led to police officers being fired, arrested, or both. Flock told 404 Media that it is “aware of 15 incidents of abuse, each surfaced because of the transparency and accountability features deliberately built into our platform.” “There are also 140,000 monthly active users of Flock, so the relatively rare instances of abuse, while obviously wrong and awful, are exactly that—rare,” a Flock spokesperson told 404 Media. “Humans are fallible; unlike most tools society provide law enforcement, Flock ensures that in the instances when our technology is misused, the evidence used to hold responsible parties accountable, is right there in our system. We also encourage all our customers to have a usage policy, regular training, and to implement our Audit Assistance tool, which proactively flags unintended use.”💡Do you know anything else about Flock? I would love to hear from you. Using a non-work device, you can message me securely on Signal at jason.404. Otherwise, send me an email at jason@404media.co.It is definitely the case that Flock’s audit tools have proven useful in holding police accountable, because journalists, activists, and concerned citizens from around the country have pored through Flock audit logs that they have obtained through public records requests to document abuse. But it is also the case that Flock has strenuously fought against lawsuits and potential regulations that are seeking to require police to get a warrant to use the system. And many cases of abuse have not been detected by police departments themselves but by those private citizens, journalists, and stalking victims who have found patterns of abuse in public records files they have obtained from their local police departments. In most cases of Flock-related stalking reviewed by 404 Media, the abuse occurred over the course of months or years, and the victims were subjected to dozens or hundreds of lookups.Other abuse cases have been discovered using the website HaveIBeenFlocked.com, a website that compiles Flock searches released via public records requests and turns them into a searchable database. Flock has repeatedly tried to get that website taken down, as we have previously reported. In Wisconsin, a stalking victim checked her own license plate on HaveIBeenFlocked.com and learned that City of Milwaukee Police Officer Josue Ayala had searched her license plate more than 100 times. After reporting this alleged abuse to the police, the agency ran its own audit and learned that Ayala had also searched the license plate of a second victim 124 times in a two-month span last year, according to court records. Each time, Ayala simply listed “investigation” as the reason for his search. In another alleged abuse case in Idaho, the police chief used Flock to allegedly stalk his wife using the reason “test” in the Flock system.A citizens’ anti-surveillance organizing group, called Deflock Joplin, found anomalous searches by a police officer in Joplin, Missouri, last year. Using Flock audit logs they obtained using a public records request, they found one single license plate that was searched by one specific police officer 395 times in a 10-month span in 2025; they found that a second plate had been searched 147 times (the police officer’s name was redacted in the records).“The activity presented here is startling and damning,” Deflock Joplin wrote in a blog about its investigation. “One user's account at JPD has surveilled people for around a year without detection. We see no conceivable way the Joplin Police Department is auditing these logs. This activity was blatant and obvious if anyone had bothered to take a look. We were able to find this data, file records requests, create a website, and share them in our spare time […] This system must be removed or severely curtailed to protect residents and their privacy.”Soon after Deflock Joplin shared its findings with the city, the police officer in question was fired: “During that investigation, it was found that this single Joplin Police Officer did violate the policyregarding department equipment and systems,” the city wrote in a press release. “Any misuse of the Flock system or any other Joplin Police resource will not be tolerated, and discipline will be administered swiftly and in accordance with policy.”In Orange City, Florida, Brown’s ex suspected she was being stalked and spoke to a friend within the police department, who told her that Brown “used law enforcement databases to track her whereabouts.” She then made a stalking complaint, which started the investigation, according to the affidavit. In Coffee County, Georgia, officer Chris Rozar was charged with eight crimes, including computer invasion of privacy, prohibited use of captured license plate data, and stalking, because he allegedly “did knowingly misuse the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office Flock Law Enforcement Camera System and Tag Reader System […] for the purposes of stalking,” and that he “did follow, track, and surveil [the victim] throughout multiple locations in Coffee County, without the consent of said person, for the purpose of harassing and intimidating said person.” This case, too, was not discovered through Flock’s auditing tools: “The investigation began about two years ago after a woman came forward with allegations that Rozar had [been] stalking her,” a press release about Rozar’s arrest reads. In Bonner Springs, Kansas, a police officer allegedly used Leonardo-brand license plate reader cameras to stalk his ex wife as part of a horrifying and extensive hacking and spying campaign; the officer was also found to have beastiality and child sexual abuse material on his devices. There are more than a dozen other cases from around the country where the story is much the same; a police officer stalks their partner or an ex for months before ultimately getting caught and fired or arrested. These cases repeatedly show that, because there are few limits on what police can use Flock for, they are often able to abuse the system for months or years before being caught. Many of the known cases of police abuse were only discovered after the victim reported being stalked or after data crunching by journalists or local government transparency groups; many of the cases of abuse happened over the course of months. 404 Media is also aware of several instances in which an officer improperly used Flock and was simply warned or made to take leave, which did not rise to the level of being arrested or fired. 404 Media is also aware of at least one case that has not yet been reported in the media; in Dunwoody, Georgia, several police officers were fired or made to resign for improperly researching people through the Georgia Crime Information Center, a state database. At least one of the fired officers also improperly searched the city's Flock cameras, according to an internal investigative report shared with 404 Media by Jason Hunyar, a Dunwoody resident who has been investigating Flock. Dunwoody has a very close relationship with Flock and the company used Dunwoody as a demonstration for other police departments during sales pitches until Hunyar discovered that the company was accessing cameras in a children's gymnasium during these sales pitches. “The fundamental problem with these systems is that they place private information about people’s movements over time in the hands of every officer,” Michael Soyfer, an Institute for Justice attorney, said in the organization’s report. “Without the constitutional safeguard of a warrant requirement, that predictably allows officers to abuse their access to these systems for things like stalking romantic partners.”

There's a star in the making at this week's Curtis Cup, and it's Bel-Air's beloved course dog
LOS ANGELES — When members walk into Bel-Air Country Club, they’re often greeted with a friendly smile from Penny in the front office lobby. Penny is always happy to see people. She doesn’t mind sitting in an office chair and exchanging greetings with staff and golfers. There’s not a member she doesn’t like. The only thing she needs in return is getting attention and some treats.Penny is the resident goldendoodle at the country club that is hosting the Curtis Cup this week that pits top-level amateur female golfers from the U.S. against Great Britain & Ireland. She’s an unofficial therapy dog and good-vibe machine.Penny rides in a Bel-Air cart with owner Justin DePippo and his son.Penny’s owner is Justin DePippo, director of golf course and grounds at Bel-Air, and it’s always a thrill for him to share Penny’s playfulness with others. “She’s just a ball of joy running around here,” DePippo said.DePippo always dreamed he’d get a dog when he was promoted to superintendent of a course. He got Penny when she was a puppy, and she’s now 8 years old. She rides around with him in a golf cart much of the day. Then she hangs in the front lobby.“I had dogs growing up. I think one of the best kind of perks of the superintendent job is being able to have a dog you can bring to work with you every day,” DePippo said. “I was just really looking forward to once I got to that spot in my career, to get my own dog.”In 2023, Penny got her share of fame via television time when the U.S. Women’s Amateur was played at Bel-Air, and she’s sure to get more airtime this week. It figures that she won’t take sides during the matches and will be spreading her love to all the players.Penny stands on the course with her toy amid a rainbow made by the spinkler system.Penny is beloved by members and might be a bigger celebrity than some of the actual stars from Hollywood who play at the famed club. She’ll run up and jump into just about any golfer’s cart, and many golfers carry treats with them so they can reward her for her friendliness. She knows all sorts of tricks, like shaking hands and jump kisses.Asked if she’s ever chased a golf ball, DePippo said yes, but only twice, and that’s when she was a puppy. He trained her with a long leash, which eventually got shorter, and in short order, she didn’t even need a leash. She stays right by DePippo’s side, unless he has a meeting, then she moves to front lobby greeter. She’ll stay in her office chair, too.“She’s a big hit, everyone loves seeing her here,” DePippo said.Asked if any members aren’t dog people, DePippo only knew of one such instance of a couple, and they don’t belong to the club anymore.Penny sits behind the front desk at Bel-Air.“You know, not everybody's a dog person, right?” DePippo said. “Just one couple out of the thousands of people, from members and guests and all of our events and staff. I think we're probably at 99 percent of people being excited to be around her. In Europe, it's common to see people out walking with their dog playing golf.”DePippo and Penny arrive to the course before 6 a.m. There’s always a group of three men having heir breakfast at that time. Penny knows it and usually makes a beeline to get her first treats of the day. She’ll go sit in the shade and take a nap or hang out at the famous Swinging Bridge, which has a view of downtown. It’s a photogenic spot for Penny.DePippo and Penny had the run of the place when Bel-Air was under renovation a few years ago. She befriended construction workers then, too. She’s more of people person and isn’t so much interested in dogs, so she’s a perfect fit at a country club. DePippo hopes to keep Penny around for a long time, continuing to bring love to all.“She stays active and I just want to keep her healthy and not give her too much bacon and goldfish treats,” DePippo said. “The vet told me I should get a T-shirt that says, ‘Don't feed me’ because she's around so many people, and everybody loves seeing her [and] wants to give her a treat. I’ve got healthy treats, and she’s on a healthy dog food program. I’m just trying to keep her young and healthy as long as I can.”

Obstacle racing brings an incredible energy and athleticism, while staying true to the unique adaptability and heroism that has always made pentathlon unique,” Lundgren said.Modern pentathlon, introduced at the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm, traditionally focused on fencing, swimming, equestrian show jumping, running and shooting. In recent years, running has been combined with laser pistol shooting. Now, the horses are being replaced with an obstacle course that could look a lot like the popular TV show thanks to a recent deal between the modern pentathlon federation and the Tokyo Broadcasting System Television that owns the rights to what’s called “Saskue” in Japan. The change is seen as making modern pentathlon less of what ESPN called a “niche outlier” at the Olympics, a medal event “originally modeled on the exploits of a dashing soldier on horseback behind enemy lines.”Organizers of the 2028 Summer Games describe modern pentathlon as a “multidimensional contest” demanding “unparalleled physical and mental resolve, calm precision under chaotic conditions and provides spectators with an ever-changing, highly-exciting viewing experience.” Ida Lundgren, left, and Dolph Lundgren arrive at the premiere of "Masters of the Universe" on Monday, May 17, 2026, at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles. Morocco Football Team 2026 World Cup Preview: Can Brahim Díaz Do Something Special?
Morocco Football Team 2026 World Cup Preview: Can Brahim Díaz Do Something Special? The Moroccan football team arrive at the 2026 FIFA World Cup carrying something heavier than expectations. It’s legacy. Four years ago in Qatar, they became the first African nation ever to reach a World Cup semifinal, knocking out Spain and Portugal before falling to France. That wasn’t a fluke. It was a statement. Now, with the tournament expanding to 48 teams across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, every top side faces a trickier, longer road. Morocco is no exception.Moroccan Football Team Squad for 2026:Full squad: Bounou, El Kajoui, Tagnaouti, Hakimi, Mazraoui, Aguerd, Saïss, Attiat-Allah, El Yamiq, Aminu, Amrabat, Ounahi, Bouaddi, El Khannouss, Benhaima, Brahim Díaz, Ziyech, Boufal, Dari, Talbi, Ayoub El Kaabi, Soufiane RahimiStrengths And Weaknesses Of The Moroccan Football Team:Achraf Hakimi, fresh from winning the UEFA Champions League and now the most decorated African player with 19 major team trophies, captains the side from right-back. He has the pace and attacking threat that full-backs simply shouldn’t possess. Yassine Bounou’s heroics in Qatar 2022 remain vivid in football memory, and Morocco will lean on his experience again in decisive moments. Brahim Díaz provides the creative spark in midfield. The squad retains a strong core from the 2022 generation, including Sofyan Amrabat, Azzedine Ounahi, Noussair Mazraoui, and Nayef Aguerd, giving Ouahbi a settled, battle-hardened spine. Exciting 18-year-old Lille midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi, who switched allegiances after representing France at the junior level, also made the squad and signals serious long-term intent.Qualifying was a breeze. The Atlas Lions navigated their CAF group-stage fixtures without losing a single match. They collected 24 points from eight wins, with zero draws and zero defeats, finishing ahead of Niger, Tanzania, Zambia, Congo, and Eritrea. Dominance.HARRISON, NEW JERSEY – JUNE 07: Brahim Díaz of Morocco celebrates with teammate Achraf Hakimi after scoring the team’s first goal during the international friendly match between Morocco and Norway at Sports Illustrated Stadium on June 07, 2026 in Harrison, New Jersey. (Photo by Vincent Carchietta/Getty Images)The problems are real, though. Walid Regragui departed as head coach in March 2026, just months before the tournament, citing the need for a fresh approach. His replacement, Mohamed Ouahbi, is an intelligent operator but carries enormous inexperience at the senior level. The majority of Ouahbi’s work came in youth setups at Anderlecht and with the Morocco U-20 side, whom he led to the 2025 Under-20 World Cup title.Brilliant achievement. Still, managing Hakimi and a senior dressing room on the biggest stage is a different proposition entirely. Youssef En-Nesyri, who scored the winning goal against Portugal in the 2022 quarterfinal, did not make the squad, removing a proven big-game forward from the attack. Up front, Morocco’s options feel thinner than their midfield depth suggests.Group C pits them against Brazil, Scotland, and Haiti. Their opener on June 13 against Brazil in New Jersey asks the hardest possible question right out of the gate. Pressure from the off.Best playing XI and formation:Best XI: Bounou; Mazraoui, Aguerd, Saïss, Hakimi; Amrabat, Ounahi; El Khannouss, Brahim Díaz, Ziyech; Ayoub El KaabiOuahbi prefers a 4-2-3-1 shape built on quick transitions, blending youth with senior experience.Tournament Prediction:Quarter-finals, and possibly beyond. Morocco should get through Group C by finishing second behind Brazil, comfortably ahead of Scotland and Haiti. The expanded format suits a squad of this quality, giving them a softer Round of 32 fixture to build rhythm before things get serious. The coaching uncertainty and the loss of En-Nesyri are genuine concerns that could cost them against a top-eight side. But the Moroccan football team have earned the right to be taken seriously, and dismissing them now would be a mistake every bit as costly as underestimating them was in Qatar.

Scientists Just Accidentally Discovered a Strange, Hidden Rule of Human Nature
🌘Subscribe to 404 Media to get The Abstract, our newsletter about the most exciting and mind-boggling science news and studies of the week. Scientists have discovered that people walking in crowds tend to spontaneously turn counterclockwise—regardless of the environment, from schoolyards to busy settings—a surprise finding that “may represent a manifestation of a deeper biological principle of symmetry breaking,” according to a study published in Nature Communications on Wednesday. The bizarre finding was made essentially by accident; during the Covid-19 pandemic, researchers led by Iñaki Echeverría Huarte, a professor who studies pedestrian dynamics at the University of Navarra in Spain, studied the movements of pedestrians as part of a project to inform public health guidance on social distancing measures. But the videos revealed something unexpected—a consistent pattern of people turning counterclockwise when switching direction.“The discovery was a serendipitous one (as sometimes happens in science),” Huarte told 404 Media in an email exchange that also included study co-author Claudio Feliciani, a professor who studies crowd dynamics at the University of Tokyo. “Since then, we have completed a series of experiments in Spain to test several hypotheses.” “Curiously, during a conference where I was presenting the first part of this story, Claudio and I got talking and thought together: why not run an experiment in Japan?” he continued. “We were convinced the rotation would flip there, for several reasons (cultural ones, and the different type of avoidance behaviour that exists in Japan compared with Spain). However...it did not.”Indeed, over the course of several experiments that took place in different environments in Spain and Japan, the counterclockwise bias persisted, suggesting that the team may have stumbled on a hidden rule of behavior. This preference showed up whether people were walking alone, or as part of a group, suggesting that it emerges from individuals, rather than as a collective phenomenon that is only present in crowds.Overhead shot of schoolyard in Spain. Image: ©2026 Echeverría-Huarte et al. CC-BY-ND“We are now only sure that it is not a collective but an individual bias, and that is very, very robust,” said Feliciani. However, the team stopped short of describing the bias as a “universal law” until more research is conducted, especially in more complex scenarios, such as emergency evacuations or dense crowds. For this study, the researchers analyzed the movements of hundreds of participants, including adults who were instructed to move freely in different settings, teenagers playing in their schoolyard in Spain, and children at a nursery school in Japan. They accounted for individual variations such as handedness (left or right), age, as well as local social etiquette about expected behavior in crowds. In each situation, the participants displayed a clear counterclockwise bias in the rotation of their bodies as they moved to a new direction. Each group also contained people who turned predominantly clockwise or showed no rotational bias, but they were fewer in number than the counterclockwise turners. The nursery school children showed an even stronger bias toward counterclockwise turns, suggesting that it may not be a learned behavior, but something biologically rooted.“It is likely biomechanical, but exactly why is hard to tell,” said Feliciani. He added that this symmetry-breaking motion appears to be unusual in animals, and that “most animals show no bias, and humans are probably the exception or, for sure, a rare case.”That said, the study outlined a few exceptions, including temnothorax ants, which tend to turn left while exploring, and budgies, which show preferences in certain lateral directions during flight. Tip Jar Huarte is working on follow-up studies that use virtual reality to shed light on the bias, but for now, this weird pattern remains unexplained. A better understanding of its origins could be useful for applications in busy settings like airports, museums, shopping centres, and other public spaces. It’s also an example of how unexpected behavior can be hidden in plain sight.“I believe the real value of our discoveries lies in the fact that it can lead to other discoveries on how we process locomotor information and use them to move,” Feliciani concluded. 🌘Subscribe to 404 Media to get The Abstract, our newsletter about the most exciting and mind-boggling science news and studies of the week.

Fantasy Baseball Trade Analyzer: It's time to trade these big-name players away
This week’s edition of the Trade Analyzer is entirely focused on players whom fantasy managers should trade away. Some of the players listed below are playing poorly and are showing strong indicators that they will not turn things around. Managers are being hurt simply by having these players in their lineup, and trading them away is the best plan of action. There are also some players listed below who have overachieved thus far, making them sell-high candidates.Sell LowKyle Tucker, OF, Dodgers: The narrative on Tucker’s disappointing 2025 season was that hand and calf injuries caused a disappointing second half in which he posted a .738 OPS. The Dodgers certainly bought into that story when they handed him a massive free-agent contract. But after 2.5 months of the current campaign, it’s fair to wonder if Tucker’s issues run deeper.Despite being propped up by baseball’s best lineup, the 30-year-old is hitting just .236 with five homers and 30 RBI. His quality of contact is down, especially his 5.6% barrel rate. And his expected stats mostly line up with his actual marks. After seeing Tucker play poorly for almost an entire year, it’s time to allow him to do so on someone else’s roster.Geraldo Perdomo, SS, Diamondbacks: At this point, it’s fair to wonder if Perdomo was a one-year wonder from a fantasy perspective. The shortstop is an effective defender with terrific plate discipline, which makes him valuable to the D-backs. But the 26-year-old doesn’t hit the ball hard and hasn’t made any progress in that area as he reaches his prime. His .263 xBA is a good indicator that he may make modest improvements on his .237 average. However, the rest of his numbers are underwhelming, and Perdomo should be viewed as a 20-steal player who lacks power potential. He has been the 31st-most productive fantasy shortstop, and the depth at the position makes it hard to see him returning to the top 20.Luke Keaschall, 2B, Twins: I was excited about Keaschall during draft season but am willing to admit that his poor quality of contact has made him a bust. His 84.1 mph average exit velocity and 2.7% barrel rate are among the lowest marks of any full-time player, and until they improve, he will produce meager numbers in every category except steals. Keaschall remains rostered in 62% of Yahoo leagues and can be dealt for any player who has the potential to remain on a fantasy roster for the foreseeable future.Framber Valdez, SP, Tigers: Although their positions and overall value are different, Valdez has some similarities to Tucker. Fantasy managers mostly gave Valdez a pass during draft season for a poor finish to 2025. But the main reason he logged a second-half ERA of 5.20 was a notable drop in his strikeout rate from 25.5% to 19.9%.And those problems have persisted into this year, as his 18.6% strikeout rate is a career-worst mark. Additionally, there is a new problem with Valdez, who is no longer inducing grounders at an elite rate. He’s more of an innings eater than impact player, and fortunately, fantasy managers can undo their mistake much easier than the Tigers.Sell HighLiam Hicks, C/1B, Marlins: Hicks is a great story, as a 27-year-old late bloomer who has gone from a mixed-league afterthought to the sixth-ranked fantasy catcher to this point in the season. Unfortunately, once we get past terrific plate discipline, there isn’t much in his skill set. Hicks doesn’t hit the ball hard (86.0 mph average velocity) and has been fortunate to go deep 12 times. The gap between his .461 SLG and .374 xSLG shows his downside as a power hitter and is a good reason for fantasy managers to explore his trade market. After all, Hicks could fetch a significant return at a different position, and there are some solid catchers on the waiver wire in standard Yahoo formats.Ozzie Albies, 2B, Braves: Albies has some similarities to Hicks. He deserves credit for his ability to limit strikeouts (12.5%), which helps him to post a respectable batting average. But he isn’t hitting the ball hard enough (87.0 mph average exit velocity) to maintain his current power production, which includes 10 homers and 36 RBI. Albies’ strong start at the plate has also masked the fact that he has swiped just one base, and past expectations for a double-digit steals total were part of his appeal. He’s still someone to start but isn’t the impact player that he appears to be.José Soriano, SP, Angels: Last week, I mentioned the regression that was happening with Soriano. And since that time, his struggles have continued. Over eight starts since April 28, the right-hander has posted a 5.28 ERA and 1.60 WHIP. His control over the strike zone has regressed over that stretch, which is indicated by a 44:27 K:BB ratio. Soriano still has respectable season-long ratios (2.96 ERA, 1.24 WHIP) but is no longer an impactful starter.Connelly Early, SP, Red Sox: Managers with Early on their roster can refer back to the paragraph that I wrote about him in yesterday’s deep dive on American League rookies. The youngster has been fortunate thus far, and the combination of his stellar ratios and prospect status should make him overvalued on the trade market.

Tennessee chancellor Donde Plowman statement for SEC on Protect College Sports Act
Presidents and chancellors from SEC schools met virtually with Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) on June 9 to discuss the Protect College Sports Act, a proposed bill seeking to regulate college athletics.University of Tennessee chancellor Donde Plowman, chair of the presidents and chancellors of the SEC, said the conversation was “productive” and pledged the league will “work in the spirit of cooperation” with the senators to refine the legislation moving forward.“The Presidents and Chancellors of the Southeastern Conference sincerely appreciate the opportunity to meet today with Senator Ted Cruz and Senator Maria Cantwell regarding the Protect College Sports Act,” Plowman said in a statement released by the conference. “This was a productive dialogue that enabled us to directly address the common views shared by our member universities, while also recognizing the positive elements of the bill working to establish greater stability in college sports.”The Protect College Sports Act is a bill co-sponsored by Cruz and Cantwell specifically targeting issues like player compensation, eligibility, transfers and media rights.“We are particularly encouraged that today’s conversation affirmed a shared understanding of what will be required to secure a sustainable future for college sports, delivering the stability and certainty that our student-athletes deserve and our fans want,” Plowman continued. “We share a common goal of supporting student-athletes, universities, athletic programs, and the millions of fans who make college athletics such an important part of communities across the country. What's in the Protect College Sports Act?The bill proposes that college athletes would have a maximum of five years of eligibility and could only transfer once before having to miss a season, also banning all professional athletes from participating in college athletics. It attempts to set a player compensation cap and would provide additional legal protection to the NCAA and College Sports Commission to regulate name, image and likeness payments that don’t have a valid business purpose. The bill also leaves the option for conferences to pool their media rights. It addresses the possibility of a breakaway “super league” composed of SEC and Big Ten schools by preventing any league with over $1 billion in annual revenue from merging with another.Among other issues mentioned in the bill, coaches would be prohibited from leaving their teams before the season concludes and schools wouldn’t be allowed to hire them before the end of the season, which Cruz has called the “Lane Kiffin Rule.”The SEC and Big Ten previously released a joint statement on June 2 stating they did not support the bill as constituted since it “leaves critical issues unresolved."“As conversations continue, we look forward to working together to ensure federal legislation includes a consistent national framework, appropriate rulemaking authority, safeguards against unnecessary litigation, and effective alignment with the House settlement’s revenue-sharing model,” Plowman said on June 9. “We are confident that, through continued collaboration, these priorities can be addressed in a way that supports the long-term success of college athletics and protects the opportunities and experiences that make college sports so meaningful.“We pledge to work in the spirit of cooperation with Senators Cruz and Cantwell, their staffs, SEC leadership, and members of Congress to refine this important legislation in the interest of securing the future of college sports for the benefit of all student athletes.”Emmett Siegel covers Tennessee baseball for Knox News. Sex test used in IOC’s new transgender ban more likely to exclude from Olympics intersex women who were assigned female at birth
Sex testing in elite sports has had a long, inconsistent history. anton5146/iStock via Getty Images PlusThe International Olympic Committee announced a new policy on March 26, 2026, for women’s competitions: Every athlete must be tested for a gene called SRY, usually found on the Y chromosome. Males typically have a Y chromosome and females typically don’t, so the IOC says this requirement will exclude “biological males.” This announcement comes as planning for the 2028 Summer Olympics, hosted in Los Angeles, is underway. But the IOC statement hides the complexity of biological sex and continues the organization’s century of what the record shows is inconsistent and biologically unsound sports policies. I’m a biology professor and author of an upcoming book, “The Binary Delusion: How Biology Defies the Myth of Two Sexes.” While the impetus for the new policy seems to be exclusion of transgender women from women’s athletics, it will more likely exclude and draw unwelcome publicity to many more women who are not transgender. The Olympics’ new transgender ban could end up wrongly excluding more intersex women than transgender athletes from competition, University of Oklahoma professor Ari Berkowitz explains.Few elite athletes are transgenderTransgender people have faced mounting legal andpolitical attacksin recent years. President Donald Trump issued an executive order on Jan. 20, 2025, asserting that biological sex is simple and binary – that everyone is unambiguously female or male – and another executive order precluding “males” from women’s competitions. At least 29 U.S. states have excluded transgender girls and women from girl’s and women’s athletic competitions. These laws are built on the idea that men on average are superior to women in many sports, so women need to be protected from unfair competition. Numerous state bills have aimed to ban transgender athletes from participating in sports. Oliver Contreras/AFP via Getty ImagesBut elite transgender athletes are rare. In a 2024 hearing before the U.S. Senate, the president of the NCAA testified that of the 510,000 athletes in U.S. colleges at that time, he was aware of fewer than 10 transgender athletes – less than 0.002%.Only one known transgender woman has ever participated in an Olympic women’s competition since the committee allowed women to compete in the Games beginning in 1900: Laurel Hubbard, a weightlifter who competed for New Zealand in 2021 but did not medal. The rarity of transgender athletes in elite competition suggests their exclusion is a solution in search of a problem.Biological sex is complicatedThe genetic test the IOC is requiring is more likely to identify intersex women.Intersex people have a combination of typically female and typically male biological sex traits. These include sex chromosomes, internal and external reproductive anatomy, sex hormones and hormone receptors. There are many variations of intersex traits, but three may be the most relevant for women’s athletic competitions: androgen insensitivity, 5-alpha-reductase deficiency and genetic mosaicism. People with androgen insensitivity don’t respond as much to androgens like testosterone. Some believe that having high levels of testosterone can give athletes a competitive advantage. Athletes with this condition gain little or no advantage like muscle growth from androgens. This also means their visible sex characteristics, including their genitals, appear mostly or entirely female. The new IOC policy has an exception for “complete” androgen insensitivity but doesn’t say how athletes would demonstrate this. The policy also doesn’t mention partial androgen insensitivity, where androgen receptors respond to testosterone but probably not enough to gain a significant advantage in performance. Nevertheless, athletes with partial androgen insensitivity will presumably fail the test and be excluded from participating under the new policy.People with 5-alpha-reductase deficiency make and respond to testosterone but make little or none of a more potent androgen called dihydrotestosterone, or DHT. If they have no DHT, their genitals appear more female and they gain less athletic advantage from androgens. People with this condition who have a Y chromosome will fail the new sex test and be excluded.People with mosaicism are born with some cells that have a Y chromosome and some that do not. Women can develop mosaicism during pregnancy, when fetal cells with Y chromosomes cross the placenta into her body. The woman will have some cells with a Y chromosome, perhaps for the rest of her life. Such cells could cause a previously pregnant athlete to fail the new test.History of sex testing in women’s athleticsThe IOC and associated sports federations have a long history of sex testing, especially for track events. Sex testing has switched from genitals to genes to testosterone levels, and now back to genes. While the stated goal for these policies was to uncover males pretending to be female, they have never found any. Instead, they identified and excluded intersex women. For much of the 20th century, sports administrators examined genitals if a competitor was suspected of being male. In the mid-1960s, they began examining the genitals of all women participating in International Amateur Athletics Federation competitions in what were called “nude parades.”The nude parades embarrassed athletes and sports federations and were replaced by newly available chromosome or gene tests in the late 1960s. These tests were often done without informed consent – athletes were instead told they were being tested for performance-enhancing drugs. The test results were then often revealed publicly without the athlete’s consent. For example, in 1967, the Polish sprinter Ewa Klobukowska, who had won three gold medals and set three world records, was designated “male” by a chromosome test, though she had typically female genitals. She was excluded from competition and forced to return her medals. But the following year, she gave birth – she apparently had genetic mosaicism. Ewa Klobukowska (No. 3 bib) had her medals stripped after being incorrectly designated ‘male’ through genetic testing. S&G/PA Images via Getty ImagesIn 1985, a Spanish hurdler, Maria José Martínez-Patiño, found out through a public announcement that she was designated “male” by a genetic test and excluded from competition. “I felt ashamed and embarrassed,” she has said in a personal account. “I lost friends, my fiancé, hope and energy. But I knew that I was a woman and that my genetic difference gave me no unfair physical advantage. I could hardly pretend to be a man; I have breasts and a vagina.” She has complete androgen insensitivity.Genetic testing largely gave way to testing testosterone levels in recent decades, which also excluded many intersex athletes. The 2026 IOC announcement states that there is no overlap in the testosterone levels of female and male elite athletes, but published research examining hundreds of elite athletes contradicts this statement. In 2021, the IOC announced a new policy stating that “Every person has the right to practise sport without discrimination and in a way that respects their health, safety and dignity.” But the committee left it to each sport’s federation to regulate their own competitions, leading to a confusing mix of criteria that may have paved the way for the organization’s simplified 2026 policy.SRY gene test is misleadingThe IOC’s 2026 policy hints at the complexity of biological sex, stating that sex includes “sex chromosomes, gonads and hormones.” But it’s odd that genitals didn’t make their list, considering that genitals – external sex organs like the vagina and penis – are how most ordinary people define female and male, how physicians assign sex at birth, and how the IOC itself defined sex for decades. Sex testing through genital inspection, though embarrassing and traumatizing for many athletes, may have been a better indicator of athletic advantage from androgens like testosterone than the SRY gene. During prenatal development, androgens cause initially undefined body structures to become a penis and scrotum; in their absence, or with androgen insensitivity, these structures become a clitoris and labia instead. Thus, typically female genitals indicate low androgen levels or low sensitivity to androgens, which suggests an athlete’s physical performance was not enhanced by these hormones. Unless the IOC takes scrupulous care to screen for these exceptions, its new genetic test will likely exclude athletes who have not gained an advantage from androgens. Their new policy, however, states that “the need for consistency and fairness across sports” will not allow for “case-by-case consideration.”As a result, it’s likely that another generation of intersex women will be excluded from the Olympics. This article is republished from The Conversation, a nonprofit, independent news organization bringing you facts and trustworthy analysis to help you make sense of our complex world. The 2026 FIFA World Cup has arrived: Here are 20 things N.J. fans need to know
Just under eight years after the United States, Canada and Mexico won a historic joint bid to host the FIFA World Cup, it is finally time to kick things off. Here is everything soccer fans in New Jersey need to know about the 2026 FIFA World Cup:1. Where, when is the 2026 FIFA World Cup?The 23rd edition of the FIFA World Cup will take place across 16 cities in the United States, Mexico and Canada, and will feature 104 matches in total. The competition will kick off in Mexico City on Thursday, June 11, with a match between Mexico and South Africa — a rematch of the opening game of the 2010 World Cup held in South Africa. It will conclude on Sunday, July 19, with the final at MetLife Stadium. That will be the final of eight games that will be played in New Jersey, which will also host five group stage matches, a Round of 32 game and a Round of 16 match.Along with East Rutherford, matches will be played in Vancouver, Seattle, the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, Guadalajara, Mexico City, Monterrey, Houston, Dallas, Kansas City, Atlanta, Miami, Toronto, Boston and Philadelphia.2. Who is coming to New Jersey? The five group stage matches being played at Metlife Stadium are as follows:June 13: Brazil vs. MoroccoJune 16: France vs. SenegalJune 22: Norway vs. SenegalJune 25: Ecuador vs. GermanyJune 27: Panama vs. England3. What about us in South Jersey?Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia will host five group stage games and a Round of 16 game on July 4 (winner of Group E/best third-place team among Groups A, B, C, D or F vs. Winner Group I/best third-place team among Groups C, D, F, G or H).Here are the group stage games at Lincoln Financial Field:June 14: Ecuador vs. Ivory CoastJune 19: Brazil vs. HaitiJune 22: France vs. IraqJune 25: Curaçao vs. Ivory CoastJune 27: Croatia vs. Ghana4. Will the USMNT come to NJ? Probably not. The United States will play its three group stage games at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles (vs. Turkey and Paraguay) and Lumen Field in Seattle (vs. Australia). The only way the United States plays at MetLife is if it finishes in third place in the group and is one of the eight best third-place teams in the group stage. In that scenario, the USMNT could potentially play a Round of 32 game against the winners of Group I (France, Norway, Senegal, Iraq) on June 30.5. Where are the teams staying locally? Brazil is staying at the New York Red Bulls’ brand new training facility in Morristown; Senegal is staying in New Brunswick and using Rutgers’ training facilities; Morocco is staying in Basking Ridge and using Pingry’s facilities; Haiti is staying in Galloway and using Stockton University’s facilities.6. Which players should I watch out for?New Jersey will welcome multiple world-class players, from Norway’s Erling Haaland (Manchester City) and Martin Odegaard (Arsenal) to England’s Harry Kane (Bayern Munich) and Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid), from Ecuador’s Moises Caicedo (Chelsea) and Willian Pacho (PSG) to Germany’s Florian Wirtz (Liverpool) and Kai Havertz (Arsenal), from Brazil’s Vinicius Jr. (Real Madrid) and Raphinha (Barcelona) to France’s Kylian Mbappe (Real Madrid) and Michael Olise (Bayern Munich). As for the rest of the tournament, there will be Spain’s Lamine Yamal (Barcelona), Uruguay’s Federico Valverde (Real Madrid), Belgium’s Jeremy Doku (Manchester City), and of course, Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo and Argentina’s Lionel Messi, the two greatest players in the history of the sport.7. I want to go watch live. How do I get tickets to the matches?Tickets are sold through the official FIFA website, as well as third-party resellers like StubHub, Ticketmaster and Seatgeek. 8. How much will they cost? The prices vary depending on many factors, from the teams playing to the location, but no matter what, they will be very expensive. The cheapest ticket to go watch Brazil-Morocco at MetLife Stadium on June 13, for example, is $2,603 on Ticketmaster and $1,704 on StubHub as of Sunday afternoon.9. How do I get to the games?NJ Transit is selling train tickets to match-going fans with a valid ticket to each match. They must be purchased in advance on the NJ Transit mobile app. All information regarding the tickets and procedures to take the transportation can be found on NJTWorldCup.com.10. What do you mean I can’t park and tailgate? Fans who want to drive to the games at MetLife Stadium will not be able to park nearby. There will be no parking in the venue’s lots during the World Cup, meaning tailgating will not be allowed. Fans could park at nearby American Dream Mall, with limited spots being sold for $225 to $300 per space. The stadium is a six-minute or 0.32-mile walk from American Dream via a pedestrian bridge.11. Can I walk to MetLife Stadium?Technically, yes. But it is illegal and unsafe, according to local officials.“You are going to be putting yourself, you are going to be putting law enforcement and people on the road in danger if you walk to the stadium,” said Alex Lasry, CEO of the host committee.12. Why is the signage at MetLife Stadium different?Due to FIFA’s rule prohibiting venues named for corporations from hosting World Cup events. It will be changed temporarily for the World Cup and will return to MetLife Stadium signage after the tournament.“In line with its brand protection policy, FIFA protects its brands and the exclusive rights of its sponsors, including clean zones around FIFA World Cup stadiums and other event sites,” a FIFA spokesperson told NJ.com in an email.“FIFA is working closely with stadium authorities and host cities to implement these requirements in a manner consistent with previous editions of the tournament, while taking into account the unique infrastructure and operational considerations at each venue.”13. How do I watch this on TV? FOX holds the English-language broadcasting rights in the United States, while Telemundo holds the Spanish broadcasting rights. A majority of matches will be broadcast on FOX, while some matches will be broadcast on Fox Sports 1, particularly on the third matchday of the group stage where games will be played simultaneously. Fans can stream all 74 games from the World Cup via the FOX One App.14. I can’t pay those prices to watch it in person, but I don’t want to watch it at home. Where can I go?There will be plenty spread throughout the state, from bars to outside areas hosted by local townships. For the best soccer-watching experience, check out NJ.com’s list of the 15 best soccer bars in our state.15. When are the games on?There will be multiple games being played every day throughout the group stage, varying from two games on the first two days (Thursday and Friday) and as many as five games on the busiest days. Kickoff times are staggered for the first two matchdays of the group stage, while the final matchday of the group stage will feature all four teams from each group playing at the same time.Find the full schedule here.16. Where should I go eat? Depends what you want. Practically every country playing in the World Cup is represented in New Jersey’s culinary scene. Head to the Newark’s Ironbound section for practically unlimited options of Portuguese, Brazilian and Spanish food; find some of the best Mexican food you’ve ever had throughout the state; get Moroccan food in Cranford, Korean BBQ in Bergen County, Ecuadorian food in Hudson County. If there is a cuisine you’re looking for, you will almost certainly find it in New Jersey.17. Who should I bet on? The favorite across most sportsbooks is Spain (+425), one of the eight countries that have lifted a World Cup trophy. France (+475), which has made two consecutive finals, has the second-lowest odds across most books. England, Portugal, Argentina, Brazil, Germany and the Netherlands are the other teams in contention.18. Why does this feel familiar? This is not the first time the United States has hosted the biggest sporting event on Earth. The 1994 edition of the competition was held exclusively across our country, with the final being played at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. Brazil won the competition after defeating Italy in a penalty shootout remembered for the unfathomable miss from Roberto Baggio, the Italian superstar who had just won the Ballon D’Or, that led to the Brazilians winning their fourth world title.19. Go see some soccer history nearbyMORE BY BRIAN FONSECANew Jersey’s 99 greatest soccer players of all-time, rankedJun. 10, 2026, 8:19 a.m.In its 20th edition, Rutgers coach Greg Schiano’s annual golf outing raises 6-figure totalJun. 8, 2026, 5:11 p.m.While soccer is far from the biggest sports in the United States, the game has been played on its soil for more than a century. The roots of the game can be traced to Kearny, a town less than 10 miles away from where the World Cup final will be held. Scottish immigrants, who came to the country to work in the textile mills of West Hudson, organized teams with their co-workers and played on the weekends in what was the main form of leisure. The fields of the xx mills have since been replaced by Tops Diner, arguably the best eatery in the state that is worth a visit.20. This is too expensive, but I want to get my live soccer fix somehow. Can’t I watch it somewhere else? The United Soccer League, the third division in the American soccer pyramid, will continue playing its league season during the World Cup. For New Jersey natives, the closest teams are in Brooklyn, New York, and Hartford, Connecticut. MLS Next Pro, the third division in the pyramid that consists mostly of the under-23 teams for Major League Soccer clubs, will also continue playing.Read the original article on NJ.com. 2026 World Cup: A sample of the best chants and traditions at the tournament this summer
Every four years, it's not just the teams that get a chance to shine on the global stage, but the supporters. Exuberant fans from all 48 countries are set to take over the stadiums in the United States, Canada and Mexico throughout June and July, putting their fandom front and center. There are some traditions that are common across the board. Fans will put on extravagant, culturally-specific costumes or cover their faces in paint; they will bring drums and songs and chants to the supporters' section and sing themselves hoarse through every game.Play 2026 Soccer Pick 'Em with FOX One and make your picks for the world's biggest soccer tournamentSome of these fanbases, though, are known for their traditions that are wholly unique. Here's a few of the ones to keep an eye out for this summer.Japan, "Vamos Nippon"Want an example of how soccer is the global game? Look no further than Japan. One of the primary chants for fans of the Samurai Blue is an amalgamation of Japanese and Spanish: "Vamos Nippon!"The chant uses the formal pronunciation of Japan, "Nippon," but with a twist pulled from Spanish-language chants from other countries. "Nippon Olé," another chant commonly used by Japanese ultras, similarly pulls from the global football cheer when cheering on their team.Netherlands, Oranje FanwalkThe Dutch have become one of the standards for international football supporters, with legions of orange-clad fans showing up to every one of the country's games. There's no better way for the Netherlands to show off its fandom than the "Oranje Fanwalk," where supporters of the Oranje participate in a march to the match filled with singing and chanting. At the 2024 Euros, 110,000 Dutch fans participated in the march, flooding the streets of Dortmund with orange. This tournament, the Netherlands will kick off all three of its group stage matches — held in Dallas, Houston and Kansas City, in that order — with a fanwalk. But the real show will be in Houston, with supporters of the Oranje planning to walk about two miles down Main Street from Rice University to the stadium. It'll be a sight to behold.Argentina, "Muchachos"En Argentina nací, tierra de Diego y Lionel (I was born in Argentina, land of Diego and Lionel) begins the song "Muchachos," which became Argentina's anthem during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Based on a song from Argentine band La Mosca, "Muchachos" was retooled ahead of the 2022 World Cup to pay homage to legendary Argentinian soccer star Diego Maradona, and living legend Lionel Messi. The rewritten song itself is pretty specific to 2022, as the lyrics mention the team's win over Brazil in the 2021 Copa America final (Pero eso se terminó, porqué en el Maracaná / la final con los brazucas la volvió a ganar Papá)as part of the hope that they could win it all. But the image of thousands of die-hard Argentinian fans singing a song about that hope — Muchachos, ahora nos volvimos a ilusionar (Guys, we have hope again) — was a lovely sight. And even the players embraced it as an anthem, singing it in the locker room after multiple victories. Now that they have won it all once again, it will be interesting to see if the country finds a new song for 2026, or if they find a way to alter the lyrics for a new, three-trophy era.Norway, Viking RowSimilar to Iceland's "viking clap" tradition, the Norwegians have also heartily embraced their viking heritage ahead of this World Cup. Supporters have a viking-themed celebration, the "viking row," that they will hope to debut at this tournament: After two drum beats, all of the fans mimic pulling an oar while saying "yoo." The effect, with a large group of Norwegian fans moving in unison, is striking. That's not where the viking comparisons end. Research indicates that the vikings first made their way to North America more than 1,000 years ago. And in preparation for the "return to America," the Norwegian national team dressed up as vikings for their official portrait.Algeria: "1,2,3, viva l'Algerie"The numbers in English offset with the Algerian French make this chant a bit of an eyebrow-raiser for those who don't know the story behind it. The origin of this chant — "One, two, three, viva l'Algerie" — is not entirely clear, but consensus is that it comes from a pre-independent Algeria, which was under French rule until 1962. Per the lore, Algerians chanted "We want to be free, viva l'Algerie" at a passing American boat in the Strait of Algiers, but it was misheard as "1,2,3, viva l'Algerie."Since then, the chant has seamlessly transitioned from a cry for independence into a football cheer. And Algerian supporters are loud, too, filling stadiums with the chant.View this post on InstagramScotland, Tartan Army Sunshine AppealScotland supporters, known as the Tartan Army, have an unusual tradition in every city: giving to charity. Since 2003, the Tartan Army has been giving back through the Tartan Army Sunshine Appeal, which donates to (non-political) children's charities in every city they travel to for a Scotland match.Thousands of Scotland fans are making their way to New England in anticipation of the country's group stage matches, two of which are in Foxboro, Massachusetts. As a result, the Tartan Army donated $10,000 to Hasbro Children's Hospital in Providence, RI, earlier this month, via WPRI. Ally Henry, the organizer of the Tartan Army in Providence, told WPRI that it's the 112th consecutive match that Scotland's supporters have celebrated with a big donation to a children's charity.Senegal, Seven LettersSenegal, known as the Lions of Teranga, enters this tournament as a potential dark horse to advance to the later rounds. The team will be cheered on by the 12ème Gainde (12th Lion), the official supporters' group, who are led by a group of fully-painted men — the "Seven Letters." The Seven Letters spell out "S-E-N-E-G-A-L" in green paint; they wear pants modeled after the Senegalese flag and matching 12ème Gainde hats, with their chests and faces painted white.Plenty of teams have colorfully costumed ultras at the center of their supporters' group. But the Seven Letters stand out because of their full commitment to both the team and their full-body paint.United States, "I believe that we will win"Love it or hate it — and many do! — the chant of "I believe that we will win" has emerged as a tradition among U.S. men's national team supporters. The chant has humble origins, starting with a student at the Naval Prep Academy before spreading to the rest of the country. By 2014, it became a rallying cry for the United States in the run-up to the World Cup in Brazil; ESPN ran multiple commercials featuring the chant as part of promoting the USMNT's run at the tournament. In the decade-plus since then, it's stuck around. It's become a consistent piece of the American Outlaws' chant book, starting as a call-and-response and turning into a unison cheer. And over the years, it's been a little bit polarizing, as some consider the chant corny. In December, Men in Blazers had an interview with singer-songwriter and noted soccer fan Noah Kahan, who said that it was time to get a new chant. "We've gotta chill with that one. Horrible," Kahan said. He's not the only one who feels that way. But the chant still feels relevant when the United States men's national team is always a little bit of an underdog. Sometimes all you can hope for is a win. Sometimes all you can do is believe.

More drops for tech stocks weigh on Wall Street
Options traders Steven Rodriguez, left, and Marty Handler work on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange, Wednesday, June 3, 2026. (AP Photo/Richard Drew)2026-06-10T04:42:05Z NEW YORK (AP) — Technology stocks are continuing to fall on Wednesday, and the S&P 500 index is on track for its first back-to-back drop in three weeks. The main measure of Wall Street’s health slipped 0.6%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 314 points, or 0.6%, as of 9:35 a.m. Eastern time, and the Nasdaq composite was 0.8% lower.More drops for stocks swept up in the artificial-intelligence boom dragged indexes lower. After roaring to records and pulling the market up with them, AI stocks took a sudden turn lower last week. Among the worries is that their prices have simply shot too high, too fast.Super Micro Computer, which sells AI servers, tumbled 13.5% after saying it plans to raise $7 billion in cash by selling shares of stock and convertible preferred stock. Such moves raise the most money for companies when their stock prices are high, and they can dilute the ownership stakes of existing shareholders. Micron Technology fell 2.8%, chipping more away from its tremendous gain for the year so far. A week ago, the computer memory maker’s stock was up nearly 280%. Now, its year-to-date gain is down to 218.2%. U.S. tech stocks had appeared to be heading for even sharper losses early Wednesday, based on futures contracts, but an update on U.S. inflation that arrived an hour before trading began helped pare the losses. The report said inflation accelerated to its highest level in three years, but that was exactly what economists had forecast. An important underlying measure of inflation, meanwhile, slowed by slightly more in May from April than economists expected. Read More That helped Treasury yields ease a bit in the bond market, which in turn relaxed some of the pressure that’s built up on the stock market. High bond yields can slow entire economies and undercut prices for all kinds of investments, including stocks and cryptocurrencies. They particularly hit investments seen as the most expensive, and some critics are calling AI a bubble where investment inflated too far. The yield on the 10-year Treasury edged down to 4.52% from 4.53% just before the inflation report’s release. The two-year Treasury yield, which more closely tracks expectations for what the Federal Reserve will do with its overnight interest rates, eased to 4.11% from 4.13% just before the report. Traders have been building bets recently that the Fed will have to hike its main interest rate at least once this year, given how high inflation is and how strong the U.S. job market remains. Wednesday’s inflation update caused them to trim their bets, but only by a smidgen, according to data from CME Group. Keeping things uncertain are continued swings for crude oil prices, which have been rising and falling with hopes that the United States and Iran can reach a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to oil tankers. The price for a barrel of Brent crude oil rose 1.1% to $92.43 after President Donald Trump warned Iran would “pay the price” for stalled negotiations between the two on their war. In stock markets abroad, indexes in Europe pared their losses following the update on U.S. inflation. In Asia, the losses were sharper. South Korea’s Kospi dropped 4.5%, hurt by losses for tech giants Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix.Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 sank 1.9% after data showed Japan’s producer price index, a measure for prices at the wholesale level, rose in May at the fastest pace in more than three years. Shares of technology and telecommunications giant SoftBank Group, which has a strong AI focus, lost 8.3%. ___AP Business Writers Chan Ho-him and Matt Ott contributed to this report.

Can They Afford It? The Crushing Weight of Funding Modern College Athletics – Part 1 in a series
PISCATAWAY, NEW JERSEY - OCTOBER 18: The Rutgers Scarlet Knights mascot looks on during the game between the Rutgers Scarlet Knights and the Oregon Ducks at SHI Stadium on October 18, 2025 in Piscataway, New Jersey. (Photo by Isaiah Vazquez/Getty Images) | Getty Images I can remember a time when Rutgers had over 30 varsity sports….but I’m oldI am a Rutgers letterwinner. In the fall of 1971, I was sitting around WRSU, the student station at Rutgers. A fellow radio person came in and said he had just signed up to play lightweight football. I don’t think I even knew it existed. A sport that had been at Rutgers since 1934, and actually won league titles, was a mystery to me. I decided to walk over to the College Avenue Gym and find out more. I ended up signing up; my WRSU colleague never showed up at a team meeting again. At 5’6”, I played offensive tackle and on the defensive line during my final two years at Rutgers. But this was lightweight – or 150-pound – football. I played games at Army, Navy, Princeton, Cornell, Columbia, and Penn; I got a “rug burn” playing on the newly created artificial turf installed at Franklin Field. And I recovered a fumble against Princeton.I am a Rutgers letterwinner. That’s me – after the Penn game at the “old” Rutgers StadiumA letterwinner for a sport that doesn’t exist anymore, at least not at Rutgers. In 1989, the decision was made to drop the sport, a decision that Columbia had already made years earlier. A decision that Princeton made a few years back. At Princeton, the call was made because the numbers weren’t adequate to properly field a team. At Rutgers, it was mostly financial. It was the same reason that then-athletic director Bob Mulcahy used when at the end of the 2006-07 school year, it was announced that the University was dropping six sports: men’s heavyweight crew, men’s lightweight crew, men’s fencing, women’s fencing, men’s swimming and diving and men’s tennis. That year, there were University-wide cuts because of budget constraints. But, for many, including this writer, it seemed like an easy out to eliminate the cost of a few sports in order to “fix” football. When Mulcahy was fired in 2008, it was determined that there was someunreported moving of funds, and that the cutting of the six sports ended up simply moving the money to football. There were stories circulating at the time of those other sports’ demise, stories indicating thatwrestling was also on the chopping block. Some thought that when John Sacchi decided to step down as coach in 2007, it was going to be the convenient time to cut the program. It didn’t happen. Thankfully. But the same can’t be said at other schools. Some accounts put the number of eliminated wrestling programs at 350 since the 1970s. Today, Division I has just 79 NCAA programs with 64 in Division II. Division III, where there technically are no athletic scholarships and smaller budgets, has over 100. But that’s just wrestling.Title IX, requiring some equity for women’s sports, caused many schools to eliminate sports over the last 50 or so years. And the Covid pandemic in 2020 wasn’t necessarily the ultimate cause, but many schools dropped athletic programs during that period, as well. Between March and November 2020, some 352 sports were cut, the vast majority being Olympic/non-revenue sports. And 2025 was brutal, as scores of colleges dropped any number of sports or their entire athletic program. Some schools, not necessarily because of the House settlement, closed entirely. Many of these were at DII, DIII, or NAIA schools. But at D1, where the settlement really impacts budgets, there were at least 40 sports announced as being eliminated, though none in football or basketball. Is this a sustainable situation? We’re well aware of Rutgers’, how shall I say this, precarious finances. But there are other Division I schools that have to be looking at their budgets, at the need for paying athletes (or watch them go elsewhere for a big payday), thinking whether they can ask donors or local businesses for even more in order to keep the lights on and sports operating. How much strain can a college’s – and its athletic arm’s – budget take before the actual reason the school exists is in question? Can we have high level athletic programs, run an educational enterprise, and still balance the budget? In the next installment of Can They Afford It? The Crushing Weight of Funding Modern College Athletics, we’ll take a look at Playing sports while finding a cure for cancer.

Leeds wants to quickly sign player that Arsenal has always liked
Leeds wants to quickly sign player that Arsenal has always likedOusmane Diomande is one of the Sporting Club players Arsenal have monitored closely over the last few seasons, but they now face the possibility of losing out on his signature to Leeds United. The Ivorian defender has developed into one of the most highly regarded young centre-backs in European football and continues to attract attention from several clubs.Arsenal have long admired Diomande and regard him as one of the finest defensive prospects on the continent. Despite maintaining an interest in the player, the Gunners have yet to make a decisive move to bring him to the Emirates, choosing instead to continue assessing his development at Sporting.Leeds United Increase Their InterestThat cautious approach could now prove costly, as Leeds United are reportedly determined to bring Diomande to the Premier League. Daniel Farke’s team are understood to have identified the defender as one of their leading transfer targets as they prepare for the challenges of the upcoming season.According to Sport Witness, Leeds have intensified their pursuit of the Ivorian and are eager to complete a deal as quickly as possible to avoid missing out on the opportunity to sign him.The report adds that Leeds are aware of the interest from several high-profile clubs but remain confident that acting swiftly could strengthen their chances of winning the race for his signature.Arsenal Face an Important DecisionIn the coming weeks, Arsenal may need to demonstrate how serious they are about signing Diomande by accelerating their efforts and attempting to persuade him that a move to North London represents the best option for his future. The Gunners have shown patience in their approach to the transfer market, but this situation could require a more proactive strategy if they are to avoid losing a player they have admired for an extended period. It will be interesting to see whether Arsenal are willing to match the proposals that Leeds may place on the table and whether Diomande would favour a move to the Emirates over the prospect of securing more regular playing opportunities elsewhere. The outcome could depend on both sporting ambitions and the role each club is prepared to offer the defender moving forward._____________________________________________________________________________________________ADMIN COMMENTSo here are some simple rules which I must insist commenters follow….You agree not to give any personal abuse to other Arsenal fans. Memphis football's Charles Huff on Capitol Hill for college sports discussion
Memphis football coach Charles Huff is visiting Capitol Hill on June 10 to participate in a roundtable discussion — led by Senators Ted Cruz and Maria Cantwell, co-authors of the Protect College Sports Act — on several issues currently facing college athletics. The focus of the meeting will be "on the unique effects of instability, litigation, and financial pressure on student athletes, women’s and Olympic sports, HBCUs, and first-generation college students and schools outside the wealthiest tier," according to a media advisory issued June 9.The Protect College Sports Act is aiming to increase antitrust protection for the NCAA, restrictions on player movement via the transfer portal, and new rules for head coaches leaving for another job before their season ends. It would also address eligibility concerns regarding professional athletes re-entering the college ranks and how conferences sell their media rights and determine membership through realignment moving forward.Others representing college athletics who are expected to participate include:Syracuse women's basketball coach Felisha Legette-JackMiddle Tennessee football coach Derek MasonTexas Southern University president James W. (JW) Crawford IIIBig South Conference commissioner Sherika A. MontgomeryAkron women's soccer player Sara BowerBoston University men's swimmer Gannon FlynnSenators Eric Schmitt (R-Mo.) and Chris Coons (D-Del.) are also expected to attend the discussion.President Donald Trump has endorsed the bipartisan legislative effort that he believes will resolve "many of the most urgent issues challenging our Universities and Student-Athletes, stops the chaos and, most importantly, it may be the last chance to save College Sports, and Colleges themselves, before it's too late." Former Alabama football coach Nick Saban also recently testified before Congress in support of the proposed legislation. On June 2, the Big Ten and SEC publicly took a joint stance against the Protect College Sports Act as it is currently drafted, citing “critical issues” it leaves “unresolved.”USA TODAY Sports contributed to this report.Reach sports writer Jason Munz at jason.munz@commercialappeal.com, follow him @munzly on X.This article originally appeared on Memphis Commercial Appeal: Memphis football coach Charles Huff part of DC college sports roundtable

Joe Schoen still optimistic that WR Malik Nabers will be ready Week 1
Malik Nabers | Getty Images Recent evidence has led to the belief that New York Giants star wide receiver Malik Nabers won’t be ready for Week 1 as he grinds through his rehab from a complicated knee surgery. Giants’ GM Joe Schoen, though, is still a believer.“I still think he’ll be fine Week 1,” Schoen told Yahoo Sports on Monday. “So we’ll see. He’s trending in the right direction. Again, these things take time, so it’s not instant. Every patient is different.”The Giants open the season Sept. 13 with a Sunday Night Football game against the Dallas Cowboys.Nabers suffered a torn ACL and other injuries in a Week 4 game last season.Giants head coach John Harbaugh did not sound optimistic about Nabers’ Week 1 availability when he spoke about it last month.“He’s in the middle of it,” Harbaugh said after the Giants held their third OTA. “It’s such a hard thing. It’s an ACL and whatever else he had in that knee. Not a simple knee.“He’s in the slog of it, the grind of it I would say. He’s fighting through it. He’s here every day, working hard at it. Just impossible to predict. The goal is to start the season, and get out there some time in training camp. We’ll see what happens. If he’s out there, great. If he’s not out there, great. We’ll be ready to go either way.“I know he’s fighting like crazy to do his best to be out there,” Harbaugh said. “My experience with guys is the first time they have a serious injury, it’s tough because it’s new for him. It’s a tough process.”Nabers participated in the Brian Burns Charity Softball Game a couple of weeks ago, and there were questions about how well he was moving around. The Giants, of course, would be a better team with a healthy, productive Nabers in the lineup. Let’s hope Schoen’s optimism proves to be well-founded. If it doesn’t, and it takes Nabers a bit longer to be ready to compete at the NFL level, so be it.

Blue Jays face uncomfortable Vladimir Guerrero Jr. trade deadline question
Blue Jays face uncomfortable Vladimir Guerrero Jr. trade deadline question originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The Toronto Blue Jays are 33-35 on the season, and while it's not ideal for the defending American League champions, which were one game away from a World Series title, the weak AL field this year has them in a postseason spot. But that doesn't mean this team is stable in this postseason spot, nor are they safe from further regression this season. Taking a step back is very possible for this team, especially if Vladimir Guerrero Jr. keeps playing like he has this season.ESPN's Bradford Doolittle called out Guerrero Jr's struggles this season as a big problem for the Blue Jays. Not just in that he's hurting their chances to win, but that their trade deadline plans might be severely impacted by the face of the franchise's struggles.Blue Jays trade deadline plans might be derailed by Vladimir Guerrero Jr."Unless this changes," Doolittle writes on Guerrero's struggles, "it's hard to imagine the Blue Jays' idling season is going to take off in a way to justify an aggressive deadline."While Guerrero Jr.'s batting average is a solid .282, he has just three homers and a disappointing .737 OPS. He's supposed to be the centerpiece of this offense, and he's only been an average piece at-best this season.Concern about Guerrero Jr.'s game this season is real, and if he can't turn things around and start hitting for more power, it's fair to wonder if the Blue Jays superstar will be the difference in an aggressive deadline and not.MORE: Yankees’ Ryan McMahon problem has a $25 million release solution If he were slugging as he has before, like his .848 OPS last season with a .467 slugging percentage instead of his paltry .366 slugging percentage this season, then Toronto might be more inclined to be big spenders this summer. But now, with Guerrero Jr. struggling mightily, the Blue Jays might not be able to confidently add starting pitching help, as they might have to more realistically consider adding power to their offense with Guerrero Jr. failing to provide that for the offense. This is an uncomfortable problem for the Blue Jays, as the player meant to be the centerpiece of their offense isn't performing well. Guerrero Jr. needs to improve; otherwise, the Blue Jays might not be very aggressive this year at the deadline.More MLB news:5 reasons to believe in Jordan Walker's breakout for CardinalsEx-MLB GM projects White Sox to sell at trade deadline despite 2026 successTarik Skubal being traded by Tigers would help him in free agencyCubs’ cost to trade for Tarik Skubal from Tigers revealed by ex-MLB GMPhillies extending Cristopher Sanchez to his $107 million deal was genius

'Already being behind’: Kyler Murray sounds off on Vikings QB battle with J.J. McCarthy
The high-stakes quarterback competition for the Minnesota Vikings is already producing some noteworthy moments and quotes at mandatory minicamp. Following a recent practice session where two-time Pro Bowler Kyler Murray threw interceptions on back-to-back plays, the veteran quarterback bluntly admitted to one area of struggle in the competition with J.J. McCarthy—the issue of splitting reps.Although Murray said he's "not really too worried about the competition side of things," he explained that he hasn't been able to get the reps typically needed for someone learning a new offense, as ESPN's Kevin Seifert detailed."I was [in Arizona] for seven years," Murray explained. "I know I had two different offensive systems [there], but at the same time, you're getting all those reps. Now I have these split reps. It's me already being behind, not getting the amount of reps that you would typically want a guy to get learning an offense. That's probably the toughest part." Kyler Murray vs. J.J. McCarthy QB competition is ongoing for the VikingsThis is largely new territory for Murray, and it's specifically a unique situation regarding his NFL career. While McCarthy, the No. 10 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft out of Michigan, has the edge on Murray when it comes to learning the playbook and running the offense, signs still point to Murray being the favorite to ultimately win the starting quarterback job for the Vikings.McCarthy played in 10 games last season for the Vikings, finishing with very mixed results. His final season stat line included 1,632 passing yards, a 57.6% completion percentage, 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He also rushed for four additional scores and 181 yards. He flashed tremendous upside in some spots, including a three-touchdown game in a 31-0 victory over the Washington Commanders, but also struggled mightily in other spots, including two losses in which he threw two interceptions with no touchdowns.Murray has battled injuries in two of the last three years, but when healthy, he has shown the upside to be a consistent game-changer with both his arm and legs. Although he played in just five games last season, he completed 68.3% of his passes for 962 yards, six touchdowns, and three interceptions while tacking on one rushing score. This article originally appeared on For The Win: Kyler Murray sounds off on Vikings QB battle with J.J. Executive Jameer Nelson gives his thoughts on Sixers star Tyrese Maxey
CAMDEN, N.J. -- The Philadelphia 76ers are entering a new era in the front office with Mike Gansey taking over as the team's President of Basketball Operations. He takes over the job from Daryl Morey, who held the position for six seasons before he and the Sixers parted ways.Alongside Gansey will be Jameer Nelson who has been promoted to Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations as he will be serving as No. 2 to Gansey. An All-Star during his playing days and a native of Chester, PA, Nelson is ready for the next phase of his career as he looks to move forward. The Sixers will be leaning on rising star Tyrese Maxey to take Philadelphia to the next level. An All-Star starter in 2025-26, Maxey averaged 28.3 points, 6.6 assists, and 4.1 rebounds as he helped guide Philadelphia to a 45-37 record and a Round 1 upset over the Boston Celtics before the sweep by the New York Knicks."First and foremost, he's an incredible person," said Nelson of Maxey. "So, that's where it starts, and I think if you look at it, he's a guy who was drafted, I'm not sure what, 20, 21, somewhere around there. So, we got lucky. We got lucky with the person. We got lucky with the player, and one of the coolest things to see is how he gets better every year."To Nelson's point, Maxey was the No. 21 pick in the 2020 NBA draft and has taken big leaps in each and every one of his six years in the league thus far. He has dispelled the notion that he will struggle with his 3-point shot, he has taken steps forward defensively, and he has improved as a playmaker. There is no doubt that he will be even better in the 2026-27 season as he continues to lead this Sixers team."We can talk about the numbers and stats and things like that, but his mindset is different every year to come back better," Nelson finished. "He lives by 1% better every day, and I know that's a little cliche, but it's real. That's the thing he works on. He works his tail off every day to accomplish that 1%."This article originally appeared on Sixers Wire: Executive Jameer Nelson gives his thoughts on Sixers star Tyrese Maxey

At World Cup stadiums, there will be zero tolerance for drones because of the threat they pose
Rows of desks fill the FBI's Joint Operations Center in New York, Thursday, June 4, 2026, ahead of the World Cup soccer tournament. (AP Photo/Richard Drew)2026-06-10T04:01:41Z Fans who hear the whirring sound of a drone over a stadium might see it as a nuisance but law enforcement has long viewed those aircraft as a potential weapon of mass destruction. With the World Cup about to kick off, security is heightened and there’s a zero-tolerance policy for drones over or near stadiums during the 78 matches in 11 U.S. cities.Authorities have ratcheted up counter-drone measures used at the Super Bowl and other major events, while Congress has given law enforcement broader authority to electronically disable drones or shoot them down.“The war in Ukraine has become a real-world testing ground for drone technology, and if there is one threat that keeps me up at night, it is from drones,” New York Police Department Commissioner Jessica Tisch said. Taking the threat seriouslyCongress just gave state and local law enforcement the green light to take control of a threatening drone or even shoot them down if needed in December, though the first option will be to disable them electronically and land them safely. Key federal agencies already had that power. The Federal Aviation Administration will restrict the airspace around and over crowded stadiums for World Cup games and fan events — much like it has done for years around NFL and Major League Baseball games. Violators can face fines up to $100,000, see their drones confiscated and even face criminal charges for flying within three miles of one of the games. But those penalties likely wouldn’t deter a determined terrorist. The FBI has spent the last seven years building up its capability to deal with drones by investing in the technology needed to quickly identify drones and take control of them, and authorities have been using that already at major events. The bureau also provided counter drone technology training this year to law enforcement in all World Cup host cities that taught them how to recognize dangerous drones and respond. Read More The military has also developed counter drone lasers like the ones used along the Mexican border earlier this year and other systems to shoot down drones, but the FBI is not planning to do that during the World Cup because of the dangers involved with the wreckage of a drone falling over a major city. “If the drone is intercepted and it no longer flies, it’s going to fall. And as we say, no matter what you do, you can’t change the law of gravity,” said national security expert Hal Kempfer, who estimates that he has trained more than 30,000 law enforcement officers on counter-terrorism techniques.‘Everybody’s a little behind’The government has invested heavily in systems that should allow officers to take control of suspicious drones and land them safely or jam their signals, including handing out $250 million to help states prepare to protect World Cup matches and the big public events planned this summer to honor America’s 250th birthday.Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin told Congress at a recent hearing that federal officers have successfully dealt with drones over several recent events, including bringing down eight drones over a Formula 1 race in Miami and 12 that entered the no fly zone over the Masters golf tournament, but “everybody’s a little behind” the rapidly evolving technology.“Biggest concern I have is honestly with drones,” Mullin said. “I wouldn’t say a vulnerability, but it is, it is one of the areas that we are struggling with every single day.” Drones are scary in the wrong handsThe FBI is taking a “zero-tolerance” approach to protecting the airspace around World Cup events. Devin Kowalski, an FBI assistant director in charge of the bureau’s Critical Incident Response Group, said the agency plans to treat all drones “like they could be a real-deal threat.” Other federal agencies, including Customs and Border Protection and the U.S. Coast Guard, will take the lead at several stadiums while the FBI protects three of them.“When that drone comes into the TFR (Temporary Flight Restricted area), we’re handling it as if it’s something that could hurt people, and we’re aggressively locating its operator and conducting the logical investigation to determine the nature of the situation as well as to hold that person accountable,” Kowalksi said in an interview with The Associated Press. ATF Director Rob Cekada said in an interview that the focus now is on protecting the World Cup, but the America 250 events, World Series, Super Bowl and the 2028 Olympics aren’t far behind. “Then think about all the events in every communityin the country — high school and college games — that are a concern for our state and local partners. So we want to do what we can to help them as best as possible,” he said. Derek Reisfield, who is the former president of one of the companies providing counter-drone technology to the host cities, said “this technology in the wrong hands is very scary.” and there are many around the globe who want to harm America. “We have to assume that there’s somebody in Iran who’s spending every day thinking about how they can attack the United States on our home turf,” said Reisfield, who used to lead Ondas and now serves on the board of a Ukranian company called Swarmer that makes software that allows one person to control hundreds of drones.Early detection could be key to stopping dronesSome of the technology could allow authorities to detect drones up to 25 miles out, which would provide more time to mitigate the threat, according to Matt Sloane, the co-founder of SkyfireAI. But it’s possible that someone could sneak a drone up close to a stadium and launch it from less than mile away, which would leave little time to act.And the systems designed to jam the signal from an operator or take control of a drone might not be effective if it is preprogrammed to crash into a stadium full of fans while carrying an explosive payload or if it is controlled over a fiber optic line. The battlefield tactic that might pose the greatest threat would be sending a swarm of multiple drones to attack at the same time. Even with the best defenses, a few drones might sneak through to the target as Iran has been able to do with large numbers of its Shaheed drones. The U.S. military has an assortment of weapons to knock drones out of the sky, but Iran has still be able to hit targets across the Middle East. But Sloane he feels like the government is doing what it can to be ready.“The threat is real, certainly. But I do think that there’s a lot being done to prepare for it. To educate about it,” said Sloane, whose company has helped protect Super Bowls in the past. “And then we just need to tell everybody who’s just trying to take pretty pictures ‘Hey this is not the time. Keep your drone in the box.’”___Associated Press writers Eric Tucker and Rebecca Santana contributed to this report.
