Subscribe nowIndianapolis mother Carrie Rivers is facing multiple charges for allegedly bringing a gun to her daughters elementary school and threatening her childs sixth-grade lesbian teacher.Rivers allegedly told police that her daughter's teacher had given an assignment dealing with same-sex relationships. But the teacher says the assignment was about flags and referenced the rainbow flag in her classroom with the words "be kind" on it.After Rivers, whose initial hearing was scheduled for April 15, was released, police say she sent a message to the teacher, which read in part: "...your a child predator and your only hope is your b**** a** wife that is a cop otherwise someone else woulda already delt with u for ur wrongs. U messed with the wrong family. I'll tell you that so please say ur prayers and kiss ur kids goodbye and goodnight."As the Trump administration attacks teachers, passing executive orders like one titled Ending Radical Indoctrination in K-12 Schooling, and as many conservatives believe that teachers who even mention sexual orientation are grooming children, we really shouldnt be surprised that teachers are receiving death threats and experiencing a rise in violent attacks from students and parents alike.I think about my best friend in Toronto, an elementary school teacher who has a Pride flag in her classroom and who has had me speak to her students about my coming out experience.I had zero teachings about the LGBTQ community going to school in the 1990s. But I knew I was gay as early as 8 years old. If I had teachers like my friend who introduced me to the concept of same-sex relationships or the idea that being gay isnt a sin, the next eight years of my closeted life would have been so much easier. Instead, I was indoctrinated with heterosexual depictions every day, from Cinderella to Beauty and the Beast. I was groomed to be straight (yes, this sounds ridiculous, but isnt it the same thing?).I hope the Fox News producers, the far-right politicians and the parents who have been brainwashed to believe that learning about same-sex relationships is indoctrinating students to be gay can take a step back and recognize how it is COMMON SENSE to learn about different familial and relationship structures in school. Its setting kids up for the real world that isand always will bea multiculturally diverse planet with different races, sexual orientations, genders and so on.Why cant we be okay with this?
