In his latest assault on transgender Americans, President Donald Trump has ordered federal prisons to house transgender women in mens facilities and halt their gender-related healthcare.The directive follows an executive order Trump issued on his first day in office declaring the federal government would recognize only two immutable sexes, male and female. The executive order, titled Defending Women From Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government, also applies to immigration detainees in federal facilities. Trumps order will likely be challenged on that basis.In 1994, the Supreme Court held that the government had a duty to protect transgender prisoners from violence in Farmer v. Brennan. The plaintiff in the case, Dee Farmer, said she had been raped while housed with men.Farmer now leads Fight4Justice, a nonprofit advocacy group for LGBTQ+ prisoners.
