His brutal attack left a gay elder in a coma. Now hes facing hate crime charges.
Fifty-seven-year-old Alvin Prasad exited the Badlands nightclub with his adult daughter and friends, enjoying a Halloween night out in Lavender Heights, Sacramentos LGBTQ+ district. Doctors say he has permanent damage to the front and back of his brain.Hell never be the same, his daughter said. He cant express himself cant go out dancing. Its just its not the same. Police arrested 24-year-old suspect Sean Wesley Payton Jr. and charged him with assault with force likely to cause great bodily injury, personally inflicting great bodily injury, a hate-crime allegation, and resisting arrest. He pleaded not guilty and is now in jail awaiting his January 30 court hearing without bail.David Heitstuman, CEO of the Sacramento LGBT Community Center (which is near the scene of the attack), said in a statement that the brutal attack is part of a string of anti-LGBTQ+ attacks in the area.Weve also learned of several other bias and hate-related incidents in the neighborhood, from an attempt to tear down the Centers Pride flag and broken windows to multiple attacks targeting LGBTQ+ people over the last several months, Heitstuman said.
