It has sold more than 55 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling video game series ever created. Its a prime candidate for a movie adaptation, especially after the success of A Minecraft Movie, which has earned more than $950 million at the global box office since its release in April. This isnt the first time the video game series has inspired a film adaptation. In 1994, there was an action film by the same name that starred Jean-Claude Van Damme, Raul Julia, Ming-Na Wen, Damian Chapa, Kylie Minogue, Bryon Mann, and Wes Studi. There was also an animated movie. Both of these were based onStreet Fighter II.In 2009, Hyde Park Entertainment released a spinoff, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, starring Kristin Kreuk. Additional versions have come out on YouTube and Verizons streaming service and in DVD and Blu-ray Disc formats.According to Deadline and others, Kitao Sakurai will be the movies director, but writers and producers havent been named. There has been speculation that Peck may be cast as Vega, a claw-wielding Spanish fighter who wears a mask and mixes ninjutsu and bullfighting. Writing for Collider, Chris McPherson said the role of Vega would make sense for Peck. Its a fitting choice for Peck, whos made a career out of mystery, theatrical flair and commanding the stage without ever revealing the man behind the mask until Broadway, McPherson wrote.InCabaret, Peck proved hes got both the vocal chops and presence for live performance, he continued. Now hell bring that same magnetism and menace to the big screen in a completely different context: a martial arts showdown where style is just as important as strength. Well-known for his albums including Pony (2019); Show Pony (2020); Bronco (2022), and Stampede (2024) Peck hasnt commented publicly about his potential movie role. But his willingness to go from stage to screen is consistent with an interview he gave last year toPaper,in which he said he thinks its important for artists to take on new challenges so they dont get stuck in a rut.I really like evolution with artists, Peck said. Everything has to grow and evolve If you try to make something remain the same forever, thats when you start making bad art.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.
