Did Donald Trump just make it possible for Democrats to retake the Senate in 2026?
The Wall Street Journal editorial board says Donald Trump may have doomed his presidency by making it possible for Democrats to retake the Senate during the midterm elections. In an op-ed, the board said the situation is due to the presidents uncanny habit of handing his opponents a sword. Related Donald Trump brutally mocked for calling Japans prime minister Mr. Japan Why does he always speak like an infant? The board was referring to the presidents meltdown over the fact that two Republican senators voted against advancing the GOP budget bill the party calls the One Big Beautiful Bill (OBBB), despite the fact that the bill still advanced in a 51-49 vote last weekend. Thom Tillis (R-NC) on Truth Social.Tillis opposition to the OBBB led Trump to announce he would begin meeting with Republicans interested in challenging Tillis who The Hill described as one of the most vulnerable Senate Republicans up for election in 2026 in the primaries.Trump later wrote that Tillis is a talker and complainer, NOT A DOER who has hurt the great people of North Carolina. Soon after, Tillis released a statement explaining that retiring was an easy choice between spending another six years navigating the political theatre and partisan gridlock in Washington or spending that time with the love of my life Susan, our two children, three beautiful grandchildren, and the rest of our extended family back home. The Wall Street Journal board pointed out that Tillis decision means there is now an open Senate seat that Democrats can potentially pick up.The GOP has a 53-47 majority now, but Susan Collins always has a tough race in Maine if she decides to run again, the Board explained. Democrats are targeting Joni Ernst in Iowa Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is challenging GOP incumbent Sen. John Cornyn. Mr. Paxton may be the only Republican who could lose in Texas given his record harassing business with lawsuits, impeachment, and other embarrassments.Oh, the board added, and on Saturday GOP Rep. Don Bacon said he wont run for re-election in his swing Omaha seat. Thats a likely gain for Democrats in the House. Because there are so few places where the GOP may pick up seats, the board said Tillis retirement means the Senate is in play for 2026.GOP legislative reforms will have no chance if Democrats take the House in 2026, the board said. And if they also take the Senate, forget about confirming another Supreme Court nominee. The Trump Presidency will be dead in the water. The OBBB includes massive cuts to Medicaid benefits and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and is estimated to increase the deficit by nearly $3 trillion over the next decade, due largely to the bills huge reduction in tax revenue, according to the Congressional Budget Office. The legislation also includes bans on Medicaid and CHIP paying for gender-affirming care for transgender people. The House version also banned policies sold in health care exchanges established by the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) from covering gender-affirming care. If passed, these measures will be devastating for transgender people who depend on these programs for health care and could force people to detransition. But the Senate parliamentarian, Elizabeth MacDonough, ruled last week that these three measures violated the Byrd Rule, which only allows budget measures to pass under reconciliation,Axiosreports. This means that the Senate will need to secure the support of at least seven Democrats to pass the bill with these measures included. The fact remains that this bill belongs in the trash,HRCs David Stacy toldAdvocate. It continues to include devastating cuts to health care programs including Medicaid that would disproportionately harm the LGBTQ+ community, all so the already rich can receive huge tax cuts.According to HRC, 21% of trans people rely on Medicaid.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.
