Pete Hegseths new top military priority: monitoring trans peoples bathroom usage
The Pentagon has issued a compliance report detailing the steps its taking to comply with President Trumps Defending Women From Gender Ideology executive order.Monitoring bathrooms for trans people is high on the list of Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseths military objectives. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Among dozens of actions detailed in the report, the Pentagon said that it will monitor intimate spaces to ensure ongoing compliance with Executive Order 14168.What that bathroom monitoring looks like by surveillance cameras, assigned military personnel, genital checks, or others means was not included in the summary.Trump declared war on trans identity with his Gender Ideoloy executive order issued in January, which vows to restore biological truth to the federal government.In concert with Trumps anti-DEI executive order, the administration has ordered federal agencies to erase trans identity from all aspects of the federal government. At the Pentagon, that includes a ban on trans military service that took effect in May.Departments and agencies were required under the order to submit reports detailing compliance with the presidents fight against gender ideology. 404 Media reports that it has seenmemos for 11 different agencies, and the vast majority are generic and one or two pages long. Hegseths memo is 19 pages long, including three different exhibits. Among other actions detailed in the report are the steps that Hegseth has taken in his enthusiastic embrace of Trumps censorious orders: instituting a review hold on editorial content for Stars and Stripes, the militarys ostensible independent news publication; purging the Pentagon of personnel promoting or inculcating gender ideology; shutting down all social media at all levels of the department to prepare for reorientation of content on platforms; and stripping the term gender from all Pentagon communications and signage, including for those monitored bathrooms.In addition to Hegseths obsession with hunting down trans people in the Pentagons intimate spaces, including bathrooms and locker rooms, the summary illuminated the the former Fox News hosts instinct for censoring Pentagon communications. The unprecedented review hold on questionable content at Stars and Stripes is a form of prior restraint never seen in the history of the publication, which dates back to the Civil War.Trump tried to muzzle the outlet in his first administration, as well. In 2020,its top editor said Stars and Stripes is part of a free press free of censorship, free of command interference, free of prior restraint or prior review.
