Famed Transgender House seriously damaged after murder suspect barricades himself inside
The Transgender House of Topeka, Kansas, has sustained serious damage after a homicide suspect barricaded himself inside and was subsequently found dead on the premises. Painted in the colors of the transgender flag, the house sits on the same property as the rainbow-painted Equality House. The homes are part of an initiative by the nonprofit Planting Peace and are situated directly across the street from the viciously anti-LGBTQ+ hate group, the Westboro Baptist Church. Police say that 51-year-old Carlos Slaughter wanted for allegedly starting the house fire that killed his wife, Kellie Slaughter fled from Oklahoma City to Topeka and locked himself inside the Transgender House, KSNT reported. After a five-hour standoff, officers forcibly entered the home, causing extensive damage to the property, and found Slaughter dead from a possible suicide. Both members of the couple had filed protective orders against each other, each alleging threats of violence from the other. Oklahoma City police determined Kellie Slaughters death was a homicide, and Carlos Slaughter became a suspect. Its not clear why he fled to Topeka or why he chose the Transgender House to hide inside. News reports from the scene show broken windows and debris scattered across the front lawn. The Shawnee County Sheriffs Office is investigating the case alongside the Oklahoma City Police and the FBI. The Transgender House is known as the Mott House in honor of the late Stephanie Mott, a Kansan trans activist. The Planting Peace website describes it as a symbol of visibility, love and support for the transgender community.Planting Peace purchased the home with the help of eight-year-old trans girl Avery Jackson, who was awed when the Equality House was transformed into the colors of the transgender Pride flag for the Transgender Day of Remembrance. Jackson started a crowdfunding campaign and in 2016, ultimately raised the $70,000 needed to buy the property beside the Equality House to create a permanent Transgender House.
