Republicans are redistricting to get more seats in Congress. It could cost a lesbian her district.
Texas Republicans released a proposed map yesterday to change the borders of the states congressional districts that has been called out for gerrymandering. And that map could force one of the few out LGBTQ+ members of Congress out of a job.The president has been pushing Republicans in Texas to redraw their congressional district map to give Republicans more seats in the House of Representatives, and they came up with a map that would likely give Republicans five more seats in Congress. The Republican Party of Texas called adopting the new map an essential step to preserving GOP control in Congress. Republicans are also looking to redraw district maps in Missouri and Ohio to get even more seats in Congress. The new map would turn Texas 32nd Congressional District which is currently represented by out lesbian Rep. Julie Johnson (D-TX) from a 68% Democratic district to a 60% Republican district, the Dallas Voice reports. The district currently includes parts of Plano and Dallas, and the new district would just include parts of Dallas and more rural parts of eastern Texas. Johnson called the proposed map a disaster and a desperate move from a party losing its grip on a changing state. Subscribe to our Newsletter today The redistricting has drawn criticism from Democrats since its unorthodox for congressional maps to be redrawn absent a new Census.From the beginning of this broken process, Texas Republicans only objective has been to follow orders from D.C. party bosses desperate to try and save House Republicans teetering majority, said Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee executive director Julie Merz in a statement, adding that the proposed map would make one of the countrys most racially discriminatory maps even worse.Currently, Republicans hold 25 of Texas 38 seats in Congress, or 66% of the seats in a state where only 56% of people voted Republican in the 2024 presidential election. The new map would give Republicans 30 of the 38 seats, or 79%. Democrats in the state legislature have considered leaving the state to deny Republicans a quorum to block a vote on the proposed map, while some Democrats have been pushing for large blue states like California to retaliate by gerrymandering away their Republican districts.If we dont put a stake into the heart of this administration, there may not be an election in 2028, said California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D). Theyre not screwing around. We cannot afford to screw around either. We have got to fight fire with fire. The fact that I was able to win a congressional seat in a state like Texas is very significant, and it shows that progress can be made, she told LGBTQ Nation in March. We just have to be thoughtful and aggressive about putting ourselves in the arena and not be afraid.There are currently only 12 out LGBTQ+ people in the House of Representatives. Thats just 2.7% of the chamber, even though 9.3% of Americans identify as LGBTQ+. In the Senate, there is only one LGBTQ+ person, Sen.
