On Monday night, President Donald Trump signed the Prioritizing Military Excellence and Readiness executive order, effectively banning transgender people from serving in the military. Trump has done this before during his first administration, an order which was reversed by the Biden administration. Now once again, the militarys estimated 15,000 trans troops are once again facing losing careers, benefits and communities. The executive order comes at the end of a week filled with sweeping actions by Trump, including pardoning some 1,500 Jan. 6 defendants, ending the federal death penalty moratorium and declaring there are only two sexes, male and female. This is in addition to immigration raids taking part across the country. The Prioritizing Military Excellence and Readiness states the Armed Forces have been afflicted with radical gender ideology to appease activists unconcerned with the requirements of military service like physical and mental health, selflessness, and unit cohesion. The order states that in addition to those undergoing gender affirming care, the mere act of being trans conflicts with a soldiers commitment to an honorable, truthful, and disciplined lifestyle, even in ones personal life. A mans assertion that he is a woman, and his requirement that others honor this falsehood, is not consistent with the humility and selflessness required of a service member. In response to the order, the Human Rights Campaign and Lambda Legal announced in a joint press release their intentions to sue the Trump administration. Our military service members, including thousands of transgender troops, wear the same uniform, take the same oath, and meet the same rigorous standards. They are heroes who put their lives on the line to protect our countryand we owe them all a debt of gratitude, said Sarah Warbelow, Human Rights Campaign Vice President of Legal.PFLAG National issued the following statement in regards to the ban.Every person who has the courage, the fortitude, and the skill to choose to wear the uniform in service of our country demands our respect and our gratitude, said PFLAG National CEO Brian K. Bond. Last nights action to put transgender service members in the closet revisits the failed military policy of Dont Ask, Dont Tell and demonstrates the extent of the presidents disdain for those who serve. Our nation owes transgender members of the military, Coast Guard, and their families the same solemn duty as every service member: to ensure their ability to patriotically serve is not hampered by politics or personal agenda. PFLAG continues to fight for the right for every transgender service member to serve openly, as we have for decades.SPARTA Pride, Community of Transgender Americans Serving In The Military, also issued a statement.Transgender service members currently fill critical roles in combat arms, aviation, nuclear engineering, law enforcement, and military intelligence, many requiring years of specialized training and expertise. Transgender troops have deployed to combat zones, served in high- stakes missions, and demonstrated their ability to strengthen unit cohesion and morale. While some transgender troops do have surgery, the recovery time and cost is minimal, and is scheduled so as not to impact deployments or mission readiness (all of which is similar to a non-emergent minor knee surgery). The readiness and physical capabilities of transgender service members is not different from that of other service members.Former service member and LGBTQ+ advocate Charlotte Clymer took to Bluesky to share her thoughts on the trans military ban, which is expected to begin implementation in the next 30-60 days.Removing trans people from our military will only weaken our national security, erasing billions in personnel development and expertise, significantly harming our militarys recruitment and retention efforts, and ultimately making our country less prepared against threats, said Clymer. It will make us less safe. The post Trump signs executive order effectively banning trans people from serving appeared first on News Is Out.
