Marjorie Taylor Greene begs Trump to commute George Santos sentence
Anti-LGBTQ+ Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) wrote a letter formally urging the Trump administration to commute George Santos prison sentence. The disgraced former congressmember is currently serving an over seven-year sentence in federal prison after he pled guilty to counts of wire fraud and identity theft in connection with various schemes to enrich himself at the expense of campaign donors. I am writing to request that your office urge the President to commute the sentence of former Congressman George Santos, Greene wrote in the letter to the Office of the Pardon Attorney. She wrote that she agrees that Santos broke the law but argued that Santos sentence is too long, adding that she appreciated his political work in the House. Then Greene brought up Santos supposed regret that he allegedly expressed in a religious context.Furthermore, my office has spoken with a pastor of his who discussed the regret and remorse of Mr. Santos, agreeing that the sentence imposed is a grave injustice, she wrote, adding that she knows of people in Congress who have done far worse than Santos and yet have faced zero criminal charges. She did not name these people in her letter or in her accompanying social media post. Marjorie Taylor Greene (@RepMTG) August 4, 2025Shortly after taking office in 2022, Santos was the subject of a damningNew York Timesreport exposing his flagrant and extensive lies about his own biography. Following a House Ethics Committee report that found substantial evidence that he used campaign funds for his personal expenses and sought to fraudulently exploit every aspect of his House candidacy for his own personal financial profit, the House voted toexpel Santos from Congressin December 2023.Last August,Santos pleaded guiltyto two felony counts of wire fraud and aggravated identity theft. The 23 charges he initially faced included wire fraud, identity theft, money laundering, theft of public funds, and making materially false statements to both the Federal Election Commission and the U.S. House of Representatives.Santos, who won his bid to represent New Yorks 3rd congressional district as a Republican in 2022, was accused of stealing campaign donors identities and charging tens of thousands of dollars in fraudulent purchases to their credit cards; faking a $500,000 loan to his own campaign; filing false campaign finance reports; and other offenses.Last week, Donald Trump discussed the possibility of giving Santos a pardon, stressing that Santos was 100% for Trump and that his vote was solid when he was in Congress.Nobody has talked to me about it, Trump said when asked if he would pardon Santos. That statement may have been what inspired Greene to send the formal letter. With him, I have the right to do it, Trump said, which some commentators have noted is often what he says before he does something.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.
