Pansexual nonbinary drag and theatre performer Jinkx Monsoonrecently explained why she thinks political discussions around transgender medical care are short-sighted and dishonest.Speaking with comedian Gianmarco Soresi during a recent episode of his podcast, The Downside, Monsoon said she thought that she might be an undiagnosed intersex person. Intersex people are individuals born with a reproductive or sexual anatomy that doesnt fit the typical definitions of female or male. Related J.K. Rowling savagely mocked for using initials to appear more masculine to readers Monsoon said that her mother admitted to her that she was intersex, revealing that doctors had found that she had an underdeveloped testicle that they thought was a tumorous cyst.My big philosophy right now is we cant have an accurate conversation about trans identity, because we have not even had the conversation about how many [intersex people] there are, Monsoon said. Subscribe to our Newsletter today There are 78 variations of intersex that we know of, and we dont test for it at all, Monsoon continued, noting that many intersex varieties are chromosomal without necessarily altering a persons external appearance.The only time that we diagnose intersex is if you show external signs, if you have genitalia that gives an impression [of being intersexually between male and female], she explained. And then, do you know what they do? The parents and the doctor choose the babys gender, and they perform genital reassignment surgery on the baby. That sounds like what [we transgender people are] being blamed for doing, she said, referencing the oft-repeated claim that trans activists want to perform irreversible genital surgeries on children. Bottom surgery is not performed on trans minors in the U.S. and any form of gender-affirming surgery is very rare for minors.Actually, yet again, the number one culprit is actually straight white men, she added.In response, Soresi joked, Well, theres some doctors that are women, too, and Monsoon laughed.
