The turf at the stadium that will World Cup final on July 19 is already sparking debate after just a few games and there's been question whether the arena in East Rutherford was the most appropriate choice for the big match.It feels more like artificial turf, said French midfielder Adrien Rabiot, while several other players and coaches noted that the surface is particularly hard.FIFA told dpa that the playing fields at all 16 World Cup stadiums are "in excellent condition, both in terms of playability and player safety."Research and tests have been conducted for more than five years in collaboration with leading turf experts and stadium operators.Brazil star forward Vinícius Júnior has already expressed concerns after the first of a total of eight World Cup matches in East Rutherford, just outside of New York.The field was difficult to play on, the Real Madrid striker reported after the 1-1 draw against Morocco on June 13. The heat was causing the turf to dry out quickly, slowing down the game, he said.If it rains, however, the game could become very fast, speculated Norway coach Stale Solbakken ahead of Monday's match against Senegal. Lincoln Financial Field has been renamed the Philadelphia Stadium, a move that has been reflected on Google Maps. Every trace of the words “Lincoln Financial Field” has been painstakingly covered up with tape or tarp.The AT&T Stadium has been renamed Dallas Stadium despite being in Arlington, and the Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara has been renamed the clunky and vague-sounding San Francisco Bay Area Stadium. Most egregious is Mexico’s Estadio Azteca, perhaps the most storied place in World Cup history, a coliseum where Pele’s Brazil and Diego Maradona’s Argentina won the World Cup. It has been renamed the Mexico City Stadium to fit Fifa conventions.In Boston, the tiny “Gillette” branding on every single seat inside the 65,878-capacity stadium has been taped over. In San Francisco, even the brand names of condiments have been redacted, as if they contain government secrets. The clamp down on brands extends to the players. Germany’s Jamal Musiala was seen wearing headphones before kick-off in their opening match in Houston with the manufacturer’s name covered over. The capacity at “Boston Stadium” for the World Cup is 64,146. That means someone had to put 64,146 very small pieces of blue tape over every single Gillette logo on every. single. seat. It is big business. Brands like Metlife pay as much as £15m per year to sponsor a stadium. But Fifa’s dedication to protecting sponsors’ exclusivity is why it will earn an estimated $1.8bn in marketing revenue for 2026. Some of Fifa’s unofficial brands have turned erasure into opportunity. Levi’s produced a viral marketing campaign in which the company covered up its own logo on social media, and joked on the fact that the giant Levi’s sign on the stadium’s outer wall is still clearly recognisable under a white sheet because of its distinctive shape. Mercedes-Benz was able to get away with retaining its giant symbol on the roof of the stadium named after the company in Atlanta, because it was too challenging to safely remove or cover. The eight distinct panels each weigh 500 tonnes.Lumen was not so lucky, and the huge letters which span 300ft on top of the Lumen Stadium, which window-seat passengers flying into Seattle can see on their approach to land, have been covered up. Even so, the company had some fun on social media, showing employees rushing round the stadium trying to hide the name.The purpose of debranding the venues is to leave space for Fifa’s harem of exclusive sponsors. Why Fifa needs an official dairy sponsor (Mengniu) or an official automotive services supporter (Valvolene) is unclear. But they are paying big money and do not want rival names benefitting from the World Cup’s commercial pull.Powerade, which is owned by The Coca-Cola Company, is the official sports drink of the Fifa World Cup, and the company has taken ownership of the hydration breaks both in stadiums and on US channel Fox Sports. The controversy around the breaks – which are now routinely booed by football fans at each and every game – is only increasing Powerade’s exposure. Rexona is the official armpit sponsor of this World Cup (Getty Images)Perhaps the the cleverest ploy among Fifa’s partners is the Australian deodorant brand Rexona, known as Sure in the UK and Degree in the US and Canada. Rexona’s name can be seen emblazoned on the fourth officials’ boards when they indicate substitutions or added minutes at the end of each half. The logo can also be spotted under their armpits, so every time an official lifts the digital board over their head, Rexona is displayed on their body too. The company clearly has faith that the Adidas jerseys worn by match officials won’t show perspiration.

Croatia twice breached England's defence in their World Cup opener (MICHAEL STEELE)England's much-vaunted attack clicked impressively in their opening World Cup win over Croatia, but defensive fears linger as they attempt to seal a place in the knockouts on Tuesday.Thomas Tuchel's men were twice pegged back in the first half in Arlington, Texas, before upping their game to win 4-2.It was an impressive performance against an experienced if ageing Croatia team, but there will be stiffer challenges ahead against sides who boast more pace and firepower such as France, Spain and Argentina.Next up for England are Ghana in Boston -- the Three Lions will go through to the last 32 as Group L winners if they beat the African side and Panama fail to beat Croatia.On the surface, the problem is not obvious. After all, England breezed through qualifying without conceding a single goal in eight matches.But their defence has two major weaknesses -- a lack of experience and a worrying injury record.Former England defender Gary Neville, now a Sky Sports pundit, said the team's first-half display against the Croats would have unnerved them."I think that it will make Thomas Tuchel adjust for maybe games two and three, and make him think slightly differently about how he sort of maybe plays that defence, and how he looks at protecting them," he said.The head coach opted to leave three players with significant tournament experience at home -- Real Madrid right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold and Manchester United pair Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire.England lost Tino Livramento to injury before they had kicked a ball in anger, replacing him with Trevoh Chalobah, who has just one cap under his belt.- Inexperience -It means the nine defenders in the 26-man squad have a total of 191 caps between them, with 90 of those belonging to John Stones.Three members of the back four -- the injury-prone Reece James, Ezri Konsa and 21-year-old Nico O'Reilly -- were making their World Cup debuts against Croatia.The main debate centres on whether Manchester City defender Marc Guehi should replace Konsa in central defence, though the Villa defender has been a favourite under Tuchel.The German values the experience and composure of Stones even though he started just five Premier League games last season before leaving City.But former England striker Chris Sutton believes Tuchel should pair Konsa and Guehi rather than start Stones, whom he says lacks the athleticism of the two younger defenders."I think Konsa and Guehi have better attributes in terms of one-against-one situations than John Stones and there will be times in games when they will be isolated one-against-one against players of the highest class," he told the BBC.England forward Ollie Watkins is less concerned, brushing aside concerns over the back four while speaking to reporters at the team's training base in Kansas City on Sunday."I think people are always going to try and criticise and find certain areas they can pick on but I think defensively we've got world-class players at the end of the day who have won major trophies and played at the highest level possible," he said."I think maybe we started the game a little bit nervously the other day but you've seen once the nerves are out of the lads' system, I think in the second half we absolutely blew Croatia away."jw/gj

The defender arrived with a niggle which became worse during training. Bielsa has accepted responsibility for the situation and admitted that “something is wrong.”The Uruguay boss has now been asked if Araujo or Giorgian De Arrascaeta will return against Spain and ruled both players out: “They have no chance of playing against Spain,” he told a press conference.Uruguay have drawn both their games so far, against Cape Verde and New Zealand, and can still make it to the knockouts. However, they will need a result against Spain when the two teams meet on Friday in Mexico which is not an easy ask.As for Araujo, he missed World Cup 2022 due to injury and will be hoping his team can progress and he can return for the knockout stages.

McDermott won an Irish Cup during his time at Glentoran [Getty Images]"To go from Belfast, to Rhode Island, to the Middle East, to Glentoran, to Qatar, to Cobh Ramblers, to Ghana and back to Rhode Island in 30 years is an interesting story and I'm glad to get the chance to share it."Mick McDermott has seen it all during a long coaching career that has taken him all across the world in various roles.The Belfast native is speaking to BBC Sport NI from Providence, Rhode Island, Ghana's base for the World Cup.He is part of Carlos Queiroz's backroom staff once again and is also working as a performance co-ordinator for the Black Stars.It is the second World Cup McDermott has worked at after also linking up with Queiroz for Iran's campaign in 2018, but this one means a bit more to the former Glens boss.With their base in Rhode Island, the 52-year-old comes full circle and returns to a place which holds plenty of special memories and one which ignited his footballing journey."It's unbelievable, I had no idea this job was going to appear, which is common in football. I lived in Rhode Island, I played football at the university on a scholarship," he told BBC Sport NI's Thomas Kane."Karla played volleyball, that's where we met and got married, so I lived here for six years. I haven't been back in a long time, I have seen some friends out here and hoping to see more, but it's a small world."It's been quite the journey for a man who was set to go into a career as a teacher before accepting a coaching role while in the US."I graduated as a school teacher and was about to take a teaching job, but I took a coaching role at the University of Oregon and from there, out of the blue, through a connection, I got the offer to go to Abu Dhabi and it changed my life."Ghana role 'another brilliant project with a brilliant football nation'McDermott's relationship with Queiroz goes back to 2011 and has spanned three different national teams with two spells at Iran as well as one at Qatar and now Ghana, but it was a mutual connection that got the ball rolling for the two to meet."Carlos was considering the Iran job in 2011 and my former head coach in the USL in America was Carlos' long-term goalkeeper coach. I was already in the Middle East, working in Abu Dhabi for a club team and the conversations started. I met Carlos in Doha, we talked and myself and two other staff members joined Carlos and accepted the Iran job and that was the start of it," he explained.While he did not accompany Queiroz to Colombia or Egypt, instead taking over at the "mighty Glentoran" where he won an Irish Cup, McDermott did not hesitate in following him to Qatar and now to Ghana after a spell with League of Ireland First Division side Cobh Ramblers."Here we are again, another brilliant project with a brilliant football nation. It's an opportunity I don't think anyone can say no to, to work with the Ghana football team and Carlos again, it's been brilliant."While many managers and their coaching staff have a few months to plan everything from travel to squad selection for the World Cup, Queiroz and McDermott did not have that luxury.Appointed in April, they did not get to work with their full 26-man squad until the end of May, with just one full training session before a 1-1 friendly draw against Wales on 2 June and a flight to the US the next day."The logistics and travel were already in place, we tweaked them a little," he said. "A big group of our players didn't arrive until 30 May and we didn't have a full training session until 31 May. "We had two days, played Wales and flew the next day to the US. We had to submit our 26-man list before we even played Wales but the players have been brilliant to work with."Their last-minute preparations do not seem to have hampered things on the pitch, with Ghana beating Panama 1-0 in their opening Group L game in Toronto, courtesy of a 95th-minute winner from Caleb Yirenkyi.McDermott has been impressed with how the squad has gelled off the pitch and their musical talents."When they are together, as you can see from social media, there is a bond and it's new to me. I've been around the Middle East, Asia, Ireland and US and have had groups with good atmospheres but this, it's hard to express it. I stand sometimes and just enjoy it," he said."It was the night before we played Panama in the hotel and they have a tradition where the day before their first game after the training session they have a prayer and a song. "The song went from the pitch and carried on to the 30-minute bus to the hotel and carried on to the hotel and once they got going they got going, it went on for an hour and a half. When you see the positive energy it gives them it's nice. My foot started tapping!"Ghana 'not overawed going to play England'Semenyo will look to score his first World Cup goal when Ghana face England on Tuesday [Getty Images]Next up for the Black Stars is a game against one of the tournament favourites, England, in Foxborough.While McDermott believes the Three Lions are a formidable force, as demonstrated by their 4-2 win over Croatia, he also thinks the game is a "free one" for Ghana with the pressure off after winning their first game."They have quality players firing on all cylinders and we know it's going to be a massive challenge but it's called the World Cup for a reason. Every game is a massive challenge, the Panama game was," he added."We're in a good position right now. We know we have to be resilient to get through it. The key was to get through the first game and we did."Our boys play for big clubs and in big games. We're not overawed going to play England, the boys have belief and it depends how we show up on the day. When the curtain opens you have to dance and I think the boys are more than capable of getting a result."Key to their hopes of springing an upset will be Manchester City winger Antoine Semenyo, who has won 35 caps for his country and will be looking to net his first World Cup goal."I've not been around someone as humble as him. In terms of his football talent, [he's] probably as explosive a player I've seen to go from a jog to full tilt, he's really powerful," McDermott said. "He has the ability, if he's on his game, to hurt any full-backs in the world but we have some others. We have five or six with that same pace and those are nice weapons to have."

Chargers undrafted free agent Nadame Tucker was identified as the under-the-radar rookie to watch heading into training camp and the preseason by ESPN's Kris Rhim.Here is what Rhim had to say about Tucker:Tucker, who went undrafted out of Western Michigan, played for first-year defensive coordinator Chris O'Leary last season. Tucker was one of the most disruptive rushers in college; he was a third-team All-American, the MAC Defensive Player of the Year, led the FBS with 21 tackles for loss and tied for the lead with 14.5 sacks. Tucker could compete for the final edge rusher spot, a battle that could come down to him and 33-year-old veteran Bud Dupree.During his breakout 2025 season at Western Michigan, Tucker terrorized opposing offenses. He earned MAC Defensive Player of the Year honors and tied for the FBS lead with an astronomical 14.5 sacks. He also led the entire nation with 21 tackles for loss.Tucker spent his dominant collegiate season playing under Chris O'Leary, who now serves as the Chargers' defensive coordinator. Tucker has already flashed during offseason workouts. The blast at the Ras Laffan industrial area could cause further chaos in global energy markets, particularly as Qatar remains one of the world’s top natural gas producers. Qatar shut down its production after Iran’s chokehold on the Strait of Hormuz meant it couldn’t get shipments out to its clients. With Iran loosening its grip on the strait as negotiations continue over a permanent end to the war, Qatar began work to try to restart its export terminal. On Sunday night, that work sparked an explosion and fire at the Barzan gas supply facility, the state-run firm QatarEnergy said. The scale of the damage remains unknown after the blast, with officials initially saying only a few people had been hurt. But hours later, Qatar’s Interior Ministry offered the far-greater casualty figures.
