Eagles sign third-round pick Markel Bell ahead of training camp
The Philadelphia Eagles now have all eight members of the 2026 draft class under contract before training camp after inking Markel Bell. The third-round pick has signed his rookie deal with Philadelphia, according to Tom Pelissero, who reported the agreement through Bell’s agents, Marlon Moore, Trey Robinson, and Connor Mullins of AthEliteAgency. The move gets the rookie offensive tackle officially settled before one of the most important development stretches of his first NFL season.Bell was selected by the Eagles with the No. 68 overall pick in the third round of the 2026 NFL draft after a college career that included stops at Holmes Community College and Miami. He played in 12 games and made five starts for the Hurricanes in 2024 before becoming Miami’s full-time starting left tackle in 2025, giving Philadelphia a massive developmental tackle with starting experience at a major college program. The Eagles have long prioritized offensive line depth, and Bell fits the organizational profile. At 6-foot-9 and more than 340 pounds, he brings rare size to a position group still led by Jordan Mailata and Lane Johnson. Philadelphia does not need Bell to become an immediate starter, but the franchise has consistently invested in young linemen with traits, length, and developmental upside. The Eagles have signed third-round pick OT Markel Bell, per his agents Marlon Moore, Trey Robinson and Connor Mullins of @AthEliteAgency.— Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero) June 23, 2026His signing also allows Bell to enter camp without contract uncertainty. That matters for a rookie tackle who will need every rep he can get under offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland. Bell’s early work will likely center on refining his hand placement, pad level, and footwork while adjusting to NFL pass rushers, who will test his ability to handle speed, counters, and leverage despite his size advantage.Bell also gives the Eagles another option behind their established starters. Johnson’s return from injury, Mailata’s continued dominance, and the health of Cam Jurgens and Landon Dickerson will shape the offensive line outlook, but Bell’s development could become important beyond 2026. Philadelphia has built one of the NFL’s best offensive lines by planning ahead, and Bell represents another long-term investment in that approach. The rookie tackle already saw valuable offseason work with the second-team offensive line, giving the Eagles an early look at how he handles the speed and complexity of the professional game. Training camp will raise the intensity, especially once pads come on, and one-on-one pass-rush drills begin.Bell may not be counted on to start right away, but his physical tools make him one of the more intriguing rookies on the roster. With his contract completed, the next step is simple: stay healthy, stack reps, and begin proving he can become part of the Eagles’ offensive line future. This article originally appeared on Eagles Wire: Markel Bell signs his rookie deal as Eagles training camp approaches

Savannah Guthrie says family remains ‘in agony’ over missing mom, begs the public for tips
An aerial view of the home of Nancy Guthrie, the missing mother of "Today" show host Savannah Guthrie, in Tucson, Ariz., on Friday, March 6, 2026,. (AP Photo/Rebecca Noble,File)2026-06-23T15:32:01Z TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie made an emotional appeal to viewers Tuesday to come forward with any information about her missing mother, a day after news organizations said a ransom note received months ago had indicated that she was dead.“We are in agony, and we cannot be at peace. ... We love our mom. We’ll never stop looking for her,” Guthrie said at the “Today” desk in New York, holding a tissue in her left hand.Nancy Guthrie, 84, who lived alone, was reported missing from her Tucson-area home on Feb. 1. The FBI released video more than a week later from a camera outside her front door showing a masked stranger. Her blood was found on the porch, but the case remains unsolved. Some media outlets had previously reported receiving ransom notes in the days after Guthrie’s disappearance but had not disclosed the details while the investigation was at an early stage. Guthrie’s family was aware of the notes. Tucson TV station KOLD said Monday that it had received two notes, one demanding millions in Bitcoin in exchange for Guthrie’s return and another that said she had died. Separately, CNN cited law enforcement sources in reporting on the contents of the notes. CNN said a note indicated that those who kidnapped Guthrie did not mean to kill her but that she died shortly after her disappearance.“I don’t have any comment on this story. I’m not involved in our coverage,” Savannah Guthrie said Tuesday, referring to NBC News. “But I can’t pretend I’m not here. And since I am, I want to just take the opportunity to ask people — really to beg people — to come forward. Somebody knows something.” Read More The Pima County Sheriff’s Department referred questions about the ransom notes to the FBI. An email seeking comment was not immediately returned. Volunteers and search teams scoured the nearby desert terrain filled with cactuses, bushes and boulders in the weeks after Nancy Guthrie vanished. A group recently conducted a search near the Arizona-Mexico border but didn’t report finding her.Savannah Guthrie and her siblings occasionally appeared in social media videos earlier in the saga, urging the public to come forward with tips. She asked people to “raise your prayers with us” and acknowledged that her mother might be in heaven dancing “with our daddy.”

Maybe they're good: FIFA to analyze use of hydration breaks at future World Cups, Infantino says
ATLANTA (AP) — FIFA will consider keeping hydration breaks for future World Cups despite backlash to the extra stoppages in play at this year's tournament.Gianni Infantino, the soccer body's president, defended the decision to introduce breaks — which come midway through each half — at this World Cup and said Tuesday they may be providing more entertainment for fans.He said FIFA would analyze what it will do in future tournaments “based on this experience.” But after criticism that the breaks were a stealth way to insert advertising or American-style timeouts, Infantino suggested the stoppages have been positive.“Maybe the coach can reassess certain situations, correct certain mistakes. The players get a little rest and come back in full speed. Well, is that bad necessarily? Maybe it’s good,” Infantino said. "And we see as well the intensity of the games. We’ve never seen 90 minutes in a tournament like this played in such an intensity.“Until the last second of the match, players attack and so on," he continued. "And maybe, maybe not, but maybe it’s also a bit thanks to this little break that the players have and after they can go back on the field and show what they can do.”The World Cup has certainly delivered in terms of entertainment, with goals scored at a record pace and big performances from soccer greats like Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland. There have also been shocks provided by debutants Cape Verde and Curacao, despite fears the expansion of the tournament from 32 teams to 48 would dilute the quality. But the biggest criticism has been the introduction of hydration breaks for all matches regardless of venue or location.Loud jeers have greeted the stoppages, around 22 minutes into each half, especially at games played in stadiums with roofs and air conditioning, such as Atlanta.Infantino said it was necessary for sporting equity.“If we were to use hydration breaks only in those matches where it was too hot and not in the other matches, we would give an advantage or a disadvantage to some of the coaches or some of the teams,” he said. “Why would the coach have the opportunity to influence the game in one match just because it’s hot and in another match where it’s a bit less hot, he wouldn’t have this opportunity?”Infantino also insisted FIFA was making no extra money as a result of networks cutting to commercials because contracts had been signed before the decision to introduce hydration breaks.___James Robson is at https://x.com/jamesalanrobson___AP World Cup: https://apnews.com/fifa-world-cup

Phelan named permanent Everton Women manager
Scott Phelan took over from former boss Brian Sorensen in February [Getty Images]Scott Phelan has been appointed permanent head coach of Everton Women following an interim period last season. The 38-year-old took over on a temporary basis in February when Brian Sorensen was sacked and led the Toffees to an eighth-placed finish in the Women's Super League. With the club just four points off the bottom when he took over, Phelan picked up three successive WSL wins in an impressive start to his interim spell.Having joined Everton as a player at the age of eight and progressed through the club's academy without making a senior appearance, he returned as a coach in 2012.Former Everton striker Phil Jevons, who initially returned to the club on an interim basis in February, will support Phelan going forward."To have the opportunity to lead our women's team as head coach is something I do not take for granted. I am looking forward to what's ahead," said Phelan."We want to push forward and try to get back to the place where we believe Everton Football Club should be and that's towards the top end of the table."[BBC]New episodes of Women's Football Weekly podcast drop every Tuesday on BBC Sounds, plus find interviews and extra content from the Women's Super League and beyond on the Women's Football Weekly feedGet the latest WSL news on our dedicated page

Kahuku’s 2025 state champ Cepeda fires 67 for medalist honors at Manoa Cup
Ava Cepeda knows how to start the Manoa Cup — now it is time to finish. The New Mexico sophomore and 2025 HHSAA queen from Kahuku fired a 67 in blustery afternoon winds to post the lowest score among 89 competitors — male and female — in the qualifying round for the 117th Manoa Cup at Oahu Country Club on Monday.“It was a good day, I like where I am and I am excited for match play tomorrow,” Cepeda said. “You just kind of have to go out and not put too much pressure on yourself and shoot the best score you can.”Cepeda took a bogey on her fourth hole before catching fire with a chip-in eagle on No. 6 and birdies on 7, 9, 13, 15 and 17 with no more blemishes. It was her second time as the medalist going into match play. She had a 67 two years ago before falling in the semifinals to ‘Iolani product Jasmine Wong, who went on to win the title. Last year Cepeda shot a 74 in qualifying but made the final before losing to Kara Kaneshiro.Cepeda played and rode with Wong on Monday, and the two elite players were the class of the women’s field. Wong shot a 68, followed by Makena Yonemura, Mia Nakaoka and Madison Kuratani with 71s. Cepeda and Wong can’t meet again until Friday’s final, if they make it that far. Both women were all business, with Cepeda often in the cart tallying up her score while her three other partners were still putting out.“I feel like it is a good thing, I don’t know,” Cepeda said. “I am already kind of a fast player, so if I hit my putt I just tap it in and leave the green.”Cepeda will play Varnika Ancheta this afternoon, while Wong takes on Samantha Monroe a half hour later. Ancheta and Monroe made the cut of 16 players by two strokes with scores of 80.Stroke play and match play are two different animals, but if the cartmates were playing head-to-head on Monday, Cepeda would have won 2-up after losing each of the first four holes.Spencer Shishido fired a 68 in men’s qualifying to take the medalist spot alongside Drew Tom. The only blemish on Shishido’s card was a double bogey on the par-3 16th, but he offset it with a bounce-back birdie on 17 for his fifth red number of the round. Tom had a much more eventful round in the second-to-last group, starting with a 32 on the back nine with birdies on 15-16-17, and he made it to 5 under par before three bogeys and a birdie on the way home.Shishido, a 2006 ‘Iolani grad, shot a 70 in qualifying last year on his way to the round of 16. This is Tom’s first attempt at a Manoa Cup after helping Punahou to the HHSAA team title at the Kaneohe Klipper in May with a 25th-place finish as a non-scoring entrant as a sophomore. With defending champion Remington Hirano not in the field to take the top seed, Shishido grabbed that spot and earned an extra bonus. The cut for the 64-man field came in at 84, with three players — Reid Yamane, Paul Loui and Peter Tamminga — in a playoff for two spots for the right to face someone who shot 17 strokes better than them in the first round. Loui waited patiently at the scorer’s tables for his competitors, but Yamane and Tamminga failed to show up in time.Loui will meet Tom on the first tee this morning at 9:24 a.m. and Shishido can sleep in. The top seed hasn’t had a bye in the tournament since before World War II and has won the tournament outright in three of the past six years. The medalist hasn’t lost in the first round since 2014, when Jun Ho Won upset Jared Lydon, and that streak continues. In addition to Shishido and Tom, five players beat the hilly course with scores under par. Derek Chinen, Dane Watanabe, Ryan Takeshita, Taylor George and Coel Berardy all shot 70 on the par-71 layout. Nick Gerard, Chance Wilson, Zachary Sagayaga and Daniel Cho came in right on par. There are only two past champions in the field, with 2023-24 winner Joshua Hayashida and four-time champion Brandan Kop (1983, ’86, ’97, ’98) shooting 74s.The tournament winnows competitors down every day until the women’s final on Friday and the men’s championship on Saturday.

📱 100-year-old TikTok star: Gangster Granny saw Messi's record
📱 100-year-old TikTok star: Gangster Granny saw Messi's recordWhat a show Lionel Messi has put on yet again. Another record for the history books. La Pulga took the World Cup scoring record from Miroslav Klose and once again showed the world why he is considered the greatest footballer of all time. In this debate, many fans can probably only really judge players from their own and perhaps the previous generation. How good a Pelé, a Johan Cruyff, a Franz Beckenbauer or a Diego Maradona actually were cannot necessarily be determined from a few highlight clips alone. So in the interest of fairness, you would need eyewitnesses. That is where superfan Pauline Kana comes in. At a proud 100 years old, she is probably one of the oldest Messi fans and once even saw a young Pelé play. The American runs highly successful social media channels together with her grandson Ross Smith. The two originally became famous in 2013 with short comedy videos on Vine, which later grew into their major channels on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube. On TikTok alone, the so-called "Gangster Granny" has more than 25 million followers. She may not be a football expert, but she has developed a great passion for the game and has followed Messi to stadiums around the world for years. She is a regular at Inter Miami matches. Last year, she even made a media-friendly marriage proposal to Messi at the Club World Cup. That at least put a smile on Messi’s face and earned a "thumbs up" from the superstar. In the GOAT debate, however, Pauline may by now be a little biased. But it was not only Messi’s superfan who celebrated the World Cup record in the stadium — Thomas Müller and Jürgen Klopp were there as well, working as pundits for Magenta TV. Even though Müller and Messi are rivals in MLS, he and Klopp are visibly thrilled by Messi’s goal. Football can be so beautiful. This article was translated into English by Artificial Intelligence. Donald Trump’s “deals” have never been “art.” But they’re getting more dangerous by the day.
Most people who had heard of Donald Trump before he entered the political arena were familiar with his supposed “art” of deal-making. They were not necessarily aware of his book, The Art of the Deal, but they had at least an inkling of his penchant for stiffing contractors who worked on his properties, ripping off participants who signed up for his sham projects like Trump University, defrauding donors in his self-enriching Trump charities, and discriminating against people of color – mainly Black people – who inquired about renting or purchasing apartments or condos in his and his father’s buildings. Related JD Vance is watching his presidential ambitions go up in smoke It seems that the “art” involved in his deal-making was in serving as a rip-off artist of the most fraudulent type, like the classic snake oil salesman of old who promised that his product would cure all your ills but only made you sicker and poorer after robbing you of your savings. Trump’s signed contracts have as much value as his words: zero. But Trump’s cunning before he captured the power of the U.S. presidency pales in comparison to the national and global security risks he creates each time he (allegedly) attempts to make a deal. Dive deeper every day Join our newsletter for thought-provoking commentary that goes beyond the surface of LGBTQ+ issues Subscribe to our Newsletter today By now, Trump is famous for tearing up treaties and agreements signed by his predecessors. For example, he scuttled the Obama administration’s 2015 agreement, and specifically, Barack Obama’s second Secretary of State, John Kerry’s, Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). This was a momentous non-proliferation accord requiring Iran to dismantle portions of its nuclear program and submit to international inspections in exchange for billions of dollars in economic sanctions relief. Trump has also said he is not planning to renew the current United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) on trade when it comes up for its six-year review. It was negotiated and signed under the Biden administration. In his January 7, 2026, official memorandum directed to the heads of executive departments and agencies titled: “Withdrawing the United States from International Organizations, Conventions, and Treaties that Are Contrary to the Interests of the United States,” Trump announced that he would pull out of 31 United Nations programs and 35 non-U.N. international organizations. Regarding the U.N., some of the programs from which Trump has withdrawn include: · Department of Economic and Social Affairs · UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) — Economic Commission for Africa · ECOSOC — Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean · ECOSOC — Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific · ECOSOC — Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia · International Law Commission · Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary General for Children in Armed Conflict · Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict · Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Violence Against Children · Permanent Forum on People of African Descent · UN Collaborative Programme on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation in Developing Countries · UN Conference on Trade and Development · UN Democracy Fund · UN Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women Trump’s memo adds: “For United Nations entities, withdrawal means ceasing participation in or funding to those entities to the extent permitted by law.” Some non-U.N. organizations included in the memorandum for cutting: · 24/7 Carbon-Free Energy Compact · Commission for Environmental Cooperation · Global Counterterrorism Forum · Global Forum on Migration and Development · Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Minerals, Metals, and Sustainable Development · Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change · International Development Law Organization · International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance · International Institute for Justice and the Rule of Law · International Renewable Energy Agency · International Solar Alliance · International Union for Conservation of Nature Though his reason for withdrawing from these agencies and organizations is clearly stated in the title of his memorandum as being “Contrary to the Interests of the United States,” Trump gives no indication why remaining in these groups stands against U.S. interests. Anyone who understands Trump’s policy priorities, however, knows that the groups he has cut accord neither with items on his MAGA agenda nor with his own interests. The Trump administration has dismantled USAID (United States Agency for International Development), which was the primary government agency responsible for delivering food and medicine to people most in need around the world. This administration has also severely cut funding to global HIV/AIDS programs such as PEPFAR (U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief), a large and successful global health program initiated under the George W. Bush administration in 2003 to combat the global HIV/AIDS epidemic. It supported more than 50 partner countries worldwide. Under the false pretext that South Africa is currently committing genocide on its minority white Afrikaner population (descendants of Dutch, French, and German settlers from the 17th and 18th centuries), the Trump administration has announced that it intends to cut all funding to combat HIV/AIDS in that country. Currently, more than eight million South Africans are living with HIV, which is the largest number of any country in the world. And now, Trump’s “art” of making deals has resulted in Iranian negotiators, who were meeting in Switzerland with U.S. diplomats to come up with a final agreement, walking out of the talks following a Trump social media tirade. Trump threatened, again, to bomb the Islamic Republic over its support for Hezbollah in Lebanon as peace talks were beginning between the U.S. delegation of Vice President JD Vance, Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, and envoy Steve Witkoff. Also attending the meeting were mediators from Pakistan and Qatar. The president wrote in Truth Social post, “Iran must immediately stop their highly paid PROXIES in Lebanon from causing trouble. If they don’t, we’ll hit Iran very hard again, just like we did last week, only harder!!! President DONALD J. TRUMP” So, as in most of his previous “deals,” the “art” amounts to bluster, threats, fraudulent schemes, broken contracts, torn-up treaties, and pulling out of past agreements. Beware: his snake oil can be deadly. Subscribe to the LGBTQ Nation newsletter and be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Bobby Layne, Huston Street to enter College Baseball Hall of Fame
Two former Longhorns are taking their place among the best college baseball has ever seen. Texas alumni Bobby Layne and Huston Street will be enshrined in College Baseball's Hall of Fame in February. With Layne and Street's selections, the 16 Longhorns have reached college baseball immortality. During his time in Austin, Layne was one of the best accomplished players in program history. He posted a 35-3 career record and went 28-0 in Southwest Conference play. He is also tied for fourth in program history in strikeouts with 386. While he was a strikeout machine, Layne also wrote his way into the story books with two no-hitters in 1946. As Layne thrived on the baseball field, he also impressed on the football field. He played quarterback for Texas and was an All-American in 1947 and finished his career with 3,145 passing yards and finished among the top 10 in Heisman Trophy voting twice.Huston Street days away ⏳#HookEmpic.twitter.com/VlPq2sqagH— Texas Baseball (@TexasBaseball) January 21, 2025While Layne's playing days came nearly a century ago, Street is a name fans are more familiar with. During his time in the burnt orange, Street posted a school-record 41 saves and a 1.31 ERA. He also ranks in the top ten in opponent batting average and appearances. Due to his play, Street left Austin with a trophy case full of hardware. The former Longhorns closer earned First-Team All-Big 12 honors three times and was the conference's Freshman of the Year in 2002. Street also showed that he could thrive under pressure, leading the Longhorns to three straight trips to the College World Series from 2002 to 2004. After his time as a Longhorn ended, Street built on his success in the majors. He was a two-time all-star and was named the American League Rookie of the Year in 20o5. The Texas native finished his professional career with 324 saves and 665 strikeouts. Everyone Counted Kyle Larson Out. Now He’s Back in NASCAR’s Top Five.
For weeks, Kyle Larson felt like the forgotten championship contender. Not because the speed disappeared. Not because Hendrick Motorsports suddenly lost its edge. And certainly not because Larson stopped looking like one of NASCAR’s most talented drivers. The results simply weren’t matching the performance. While Tyler Reddick, Denny Hamlin and a handful of Toyota drivers dominated headlines throughout the spring, Larson quietly endured one of the strangest stretches of his Cup Series career. The speed was there. The finishes often weren’t.That’s why Sunday’s race at Naval Base Coronado felt bigger than a fourth-place finish. It felt like confirmation. After another strong run in San Diego, Larson climbed back into fourth place in the NASCAR Cup Series standings, his highest position in more than a month. More importantly, he’s suddenly driving like a championship threat again. The scary part for the rest of the garage? Larson says the No. 5 team is still getting better.Kyle Larson Thinks NASCAR Is Finally Seeing the Real No. 5 TeamThe easiest way to judge a season is by looking at the standings. Larson believes that’s also the easiest way to miss what’s actually been happening. For much of the year, the No. 5 Chevrolet has shown race-winning speed. What it lacked was consistency in the results column. Bad luck, mistakes and missed opportunities repeatedly turned strong weekends into average finishes.Inside the team, however, panic never arrived.“We’re definitely finding momentum, and our race cars are getting better,” Larson said after Sunday’s race. “It’s giving me more confidence, all the good things that you need. Just got to keep it going.”That confidence is beginning to show.Larson has now posted four top-five finishes in his last five starts. During that stretch, he has steadily chipped away at the standings while many of his rivals have stumbled. The result is a driver who suddenly looks far more dangerous than his season statistics might suggest. The Turning Point May Have Happened Before Anyone NoticedWhat makes Larson’s recent climb interesting is that he doesn’t view it as a comeback. He views it as a correction.According to Larson, the No. 5 team spent much of the first half of the season adapting to NASCAR’s evolving competitive landscape while trying to maximize a car that wasn’t always the fastest in the field.“By the end of 2025, we had already seen the surge of the Toyotas,” Larson said. “And I think that carried over into the early part of this year.”Rather than chasing quick fixes, Hendrick Motorsports focused on its process. The team worked through personnel changes. Engineers continued learning. The organization refined its understanding of the current rules package. Now the benefits are beginning to appear.“So now we’re getting settled in on that,” Larson said. “Our team has been very locked into our process this whole time.”That may be the most important quote in the entire conversation.Championship-caliber teams rarely make dramatic midseason overhauls. More often, they trust what they see internally and wait for the results to catch up.That appears to be exactly what happened here. Why the Rest of NASCAR Should Pay AttentionThe standings tell one story. The trend line tells another.Larson still trails Tyler Reddick by 180 points and sits well behind Denny Hamlin in the regular-season race. But that’s not the number competitors should be watching. The more important statistic is four top-five finishes in five races.Momentum matters in NASCAR, especially this time of year. With Sonoma next on the schedule and the postseason drawing closer, Larson is beginning to look like the driver many expected to see all season. That’s bad news for everyone else. A month ago, the conversation centered on what was wrong with Kyle Larson’s season. Now he’s back inside the top five, running near the front almost every week, and openly talking about momentum. The standings say he’s fourth. The last five races suggest he may be climbing much higher.

Ja’Kobi Lane is embracing Ravens’ crowded receiver competition
The Ravens’ receiver room isn’t built for comfort, and Ja’Kobi Lane knows that from the moment he walked in. It’s a space where every rep matters, and every opportunity has to be earned. Lane talked on The Lounge Podcast about how that environment shapes his approach to practice every day.He explained the mindset clearly, saying, “I’ve been in very competitive receiver rooms as long as I’ve been playing, and I think that’s one of those things that you can either see it as a competition or a chance to grow as a whole.”That balance matters in a room where targets aren’t guaranteed. He also acknowledged what Zay Flowers brings to the offense.“Once you add Zay Flowers into the mix you know that he’s one of those guys that anytime he touches the ball it could be a touchdown.”Instead of shrinking in that environment, Lane leans into it.“And I think being able to not only see it as a competition and bring my best every day but bring my best every day to push the guys around me that’s what I’ve always seen it as.”He also emphasized his connection with fellow rookie Elijah Sarratt.“We’re the same people and I think we’ve realized that and we want nothing but the best for each other so that competition is just as much love and we want the best for each other.”That’s how rooms stay productive instead of fractured. This article originally appeared on Ravens Wire: Ja’Kobi Lane praises Zay Flowers, embraces Ravens WR challenge

Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has strongly defended teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi following the criticism that emerged after the youngster's altercation with Sri Lankan players during the tri-series final in Dambulla. The incident took place after India's defeat in the Super Over and quickly became a major talking point among fans and experts. However, Ashwin believes the reaction has been excessive and warned against turning criticism into personal attacks on a young cricketer still learning the demands of the international game.Speaking on his YouTube show Ash Ki Baat, Ashwin questioned why so many people were quick to target Sooryavanshi over a single moment.“All we can do is talk with hate. And what happens then? If the person we are hating eventually reads those things, it might affect them a little. But what do we achieve by talking like that? That is why I am saying this. How can you hate Vaibhav Sooryavanshi?”Ashwin also pushed back against those demanding greater maturity from the teenager, reminding critics that age and experience must be taken into account before passing judgement.“Tell me, how can anyone hate him? And everyone is saying, ‘This kid should have shown maturity. He should have spoken with more maturity.’ Have we forgotten that we too were children once? Have we forgotten that there are children like that in our own families? This is a very dangerous trend,” he added. The former off-spinner went on to explain the difference between constructive criticism and hatred, arguing that the two are often confused in modern sporting discussions.“What is criticism? If today you are hosting the show and I tell you, ‘Vimal bhai, I didn’t like the hosting so much today. Maybe we can pay attention here. Maybe this question could have been asked differently. Maybe this point could have been handled differently.’ That is criticism. Criticism means finding a path for someone to move forward and improve. But what is hatred? Hatred is when somebody has achieved something, and we keep attacking them with words. We keep trying to pull them down. That does not happen,” said Ashwin. With Sooryavanshi potentially set for his India debut in the upcoming T20I series against Ireland, Ashwin urged supporters and critics alike to allow the youngster to develop without the weight of constant scrutiny.“Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is a cricketer. He performs for us. He is an entertainer with immense skill. Forget his family, his well-wishers, his fans and the team management for a moment. As a lover of the sport, I just want him to enjoy cricket and play without pressure. After playing cricket for so many years, I’ve realised that playing freely, without baggage, is one of the hardest things to do. As long as we can give him that freedom, let him enjoy himself. Whether he succeeds or fails doesn’t matter. The way he plays is a spectacle. Let the kid enjoy himself,” said Ashwin. The backing from Ashwin comes after a remarkable rise for Sooryavanshi. Despite suggestions that opposition bowlers had worked out his game before IPL 2026, the left-hander responded in stunning fashion. He amassed 776 runs to claim the Orange Cap, becoming the youngest player in tournament history to finish as the leading run-scorer. In doing so, he outscored established stars Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill and KL Rahul. His performances left the national selectors with little room for debate. Chairman Ajit Agarkar later acknowledged that Sooryavanshi's exploits effectively forced the selection committee to include him in India's T20I squads for the Ireland and England series. The youngster also carried his form into the India A setup, smashing a match-winning 94 against Sri Lanka A in the tri-series final, further strengthening his case ahead of what could be a landmark international debut.

Anderson off the Geordie production line to World Cup
[Getty Images]Elliot Anderson was the schoolboy footballer so good his teachers discussed placing a bet on him playing for England. The bet was never made - but Thomas Tuchel is backing him to be a winner at the World Cup.Anderson's journey from the playing fields of Tyneside to the World Cup stage, and to potentially becoming the most expensive player in British football history, continues when England play Ghana in Boston on Tuesday. The midfielder is the one that painfully got away from Newcastle United but is still revered and respected in his home city as the "quiet and self-effacing" local boy made good.Anderson's first steps in football came playing with his two elder brothers Louie and Wil, the latter gaining prominence as a contestant on reality TV show Love Island.Jonathan Roys, Anderson's former English and PE teacher at Valley Gardens, who was also his head of year, told BBC Sport: "His brothers had been through the school and I played against his dad. His brothers were decent, but I think being the youngest of three he was used to getting bossed about a little bit, but he took no quarter off anybody. He'd get stuck right in."Anderson put down a marker for future success when he was captain and scored a hat-trick in a 3-0 win when Valley Gardens won the English leg of Danone Nations Cup in 2014, a prestigious worldwide youth tournament. His parents, Iain and Helen, ensured studying was never sidelined, with lessons organised around time at Newcastle United's academy, his beloved club he was always destined to join."Elliot was quiet, self-effacing lad at school," says Roys. "He came from a great family. They made sure we organised his lessons around time he spent at Newcastle's academy."As head of year you can sometimes deal with kids who might be causing problems but he was never any trouble. He just got on with it. Reports were usually glowing, both from school and Newcastle's academy."Read more about Anderson's journey here

Who's the original Ronaldo? Brazil legend made name famous before Cristiano in World Cup history
Who's the original Ronaldo? Brazil legend made name famous before Cristiano in World Cup history originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.A whole generation of world football fans knows the name Ronaldo because of one man: Cristiano, the legendary Portugal goal scorer who is currently playing in his sixth World Cup.Cristiano Ronaldo, though, is not the original Ronaldo. One of the greatest scorers ever shared that name, and he came first.Throughout this World Cup, that man -- Ronaldo Nazario -- has been shown on television broadcasts, in attendance at games, watching this generation of stars shine on the pitch. It's worth remembering just how special the original Ronaldo really was.Who is the original Ronaldo? The Ronaldo before Cristiano was named Ronaldo Luis Nazario de Lima -- Ronaldo Nazario, for those talking about the history of the game.At the time, the Brazilian striker was known simply as Ronaldo. He didn't need another name.He had epic nicknames -- O Fenomono, and R9.He also had one of the great resumes of any era. Ronaldo Nazario won two Ballon d'Or awards as the top player in the world. With Brazil, he won a pair of World Cups, including as a 17-year old in 1994 and then in the magnificent front three with Ronaldinho and Rivaldo in 2002, when Ronaldo scored twice in the final and won the Golden Boot.Ronaldo scored 15 goals in his World Cup career, which was a record before Miroslav Klose and Lionel Messi came along. In all, Ronaldo played 98 matches for Brazil, scoring 62 goals. At club level, he played for Cruzeiro, PSV, Barcelona, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, AC Milan and Corinthians, scoring 280 goals in his club career. Now 49 years old, Ronald owns Real Valladolid in Spain.More than anything, it's ironic that his name has been adopted in a new generation by an entirely different footballer. But it takes just a moment on the screen, when the announcers realize who's being shown in the stands, to recognize the original Ronaldo's impact. They speak of him with awe, because he was a player who warranted such tones.Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the most accomplished players in this sport's history. But Ronaldo Nazario came first.

The recruiting trail in 2026 takes away as the Colorado Buffaloes saw on Monday, but it also gives plenty to Deion Sanders' program. De Gea would only quit Fiorentina for beloved Manchester UnitedFollowing reports of Juventus interest, it is now suggested David De Gea would only leave Fiorentina if it meant a return to Manchester United. The goalkeeper was mentioned among the potential alternatives for the Juve role, behind Alisson Becker of Liverpool, Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez and more.It would not be a first choice position for him, as he turns 36 in November, even if he is still making remarkable saves every week.De Gea has heart set on Manchester UnitedCREMONA, ITALY – MARCH 16: Federico Bonazzoli of US Cremonese shoots on goal forcing goalkeeper David De Gea of ACF Fiorentina to make a difficult save during the Serie A match between US Cremonese and ACF Fiorentina at Stadio Giovanni Zini on March 16, 2026 in Cremona, Italy. (Photo by Marco M. Mantovani/Getty Images)According to the Manchester Evening News and Tuttomercatoweb, De Gea has made it clear that he would only be prepared to walk away from the Viola this summer for one destination. That would be a return to Manchester United, where he had played from 2011 until his contract was allowed to run down in June 2023.After a year of waiting for the right opportunity, the Spaniard was tempted back to the field by Fiorentina as a free agent in the summer of 2024.His contract runs to June 2028 and there is an option to extend for a further year, so unless a call comes from Old Trafford, he ought to see out his playing career at the Stadio Artemio Franchi.

Chico police Chief Billy Aldridge said gunshots and screams could be heard on that call from the Chico branch of the Butte County Library. Chico, a city of about 100,000 people, is 150 miles (240 kilometers) northeast of San Francisco. The suspect fled out the back of the library as officers entered, but additional law enforcement personnel behind the building took the suspect into custody, Aldridge said during a news conference. “The incident this evening was obviously very sad, traumatic for a lot of people. Very traumatic for our community,” Aldridge said. The streets around the library were closed temporarily and a family reunification center was set up for the people who were inside the building. Trump administration announces $17.5 billion in loans for 10 new large nuclear reactors
Energy Secretary Chris Wright, from right, speaks as Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and President Donald Trump listen in the Oval Office of the White House during an executive order signing about quantum computing, Monday, June 22, 2026, in Washington. (AP Photo/Jacquelyn Martin)2026-06-23T16:34:29Z WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration is providing $17.5 billion to speed the development of 10 new large nuclear reactors to meet the skyrocketing power demand from massive data centers. Energy Secretary Chris Wright cited “tremendous interest” among developers of data centers that would buy the power, as well as utilities and energy companies. The nuclear plants could begin construction by 2030 and become operational in the mid-2030s, Wright and other officials said Tuesday.“This is the start,” Wright said on a call with reporters. “We’re going to move with the players that are ready to stand up and move quickly. Once that supply chain is up and running, do we think there will be dozens of these built going forward? I’d be very surprised if there were not.” Most U.S. nuclear power plants were built between 1970 and 1990. Only two new large reactors have been built from scratch in the United States in recent decades. Those two reactors, at Georgia Power Co.’s Plant Vogtle, were completed years late and billions of dollars over budget. The 10 new reactors will use the same design, Westinghouse’s AP1000. Wright said the Plant Vogtle project struggled because of bad planning, supply chain problems and the COVID-19 pandemic. But, he said, the reactor design is “robust and sound.” “By building in volume and at multiple locations, we think we will create and stand up a large supply chain and build a lot of construction expertise,” Wright said. “We expect the timing and cost of these plants to well outperform what was done on Vogtle.” Read More Seven utilities and energy companies signed letters of intent that identified sites, the Energy Department said. The agency plans to pick five, which would host two reactors at each site. The federal financing would be used to purchase nuclear components with long lead times, and are not construction loans. The department declined to name the utilities involved or the states they are in, calling it premature until the selections are made. It did not give a timeline for making those selections.President Donald Trump set a goal of quadrupling domestic production of nuclear power within the next 25 years, and he has signed executive orders to speed development. The administration is working to advance new nuclear technologies, such as small modular nuclear reactors.Dan Sumner, president and chief executive officer of Westinghouse, said industrialized nuclear power needs to be built at fleet scale, in order for the United States to lead in artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing and the industries that will define the next century.Critics of building more nuclear reactors say they’re too expensive and riskier than other low-carbon energy sources.Data centers used 4% to 5% of the nation’s total electricity in 2024, a share that could nearly triple by 2028, according to government estimates. Some analysts predict nationwide electricity use to rise as much as 20% in the next decade, with data centers a big reason. The Energy Department said the loans could speed up the development of these 10 reactors by up to three years and lower construction costs. Its goal is for all 10 to be under construction by 2030, to start providing power in the mid-2030s. The utilities and Westinghouse will be expected to contribute up to $5 billion in equity in total across the five, two-reactors projects. Wright said his department provides up to $17.5 billion in loans, or $3.5 billion per project, in debt to pair with the equity. He said it’s “very, very low risk to the American taxpayers.” ___McDermott reported from Providence, R.I. ___The Associated Press’ climate and environmental coverage receives financial support from multiple private foundations. (AP Photo/Kendria LaFleur)2026-06-23T15:56:42Z FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — A demonstrator who shot and wounded a police officer outside a Texas immigration center last July 4 was sentenced to 100 years in federal prison Tuesday, while other protesters accused of having links to antifa were given multiple decades in federal prison.Benjamin Song was convicted of attempted murder last March after prosecutors say he opened fire and wounded a police officer at the Prairieland Detention Center in Alvarado. The seven other protesters sentenced Tuesday received prison terms ranging from 30 to 70 years.“Our issue with this case has always been this isn’t a bunch of terrorists. This is a bunch of kids and young adults who really have a really big heart and really wanted their voice to be heard,” Philip Hayes, Song’s attorney, said outside the federal courthouse in Fort Worth. “It was never intended that anybody get hurt. It was never intended that any shots would be fired.” U.S. District Judge Reed O’Connor, one of two judges overseeing the proceedings, said what happened last July wasn’t a protest but “an assault on democracy.”“The need to deter this type of conduct is high,” O’Connor said. Hayes said his client will appeal the sentence. “Song, aside from this day, has had an impeccable life. A former Marine. A good student,” he said. “He had a lot of good qualities that were just ignored. The judge went ahead and gave as much as he could.” Read More One of the defendants, Daniel Sanchez Estrada, was convicted of corruptly concealing a document and conspiracy to conceal documents. He received a 30-year prison term Tuesday. Others pleaded guilty to providing material support to terrorists rather than take their case to trial. Prosecutors say the eight are members of antifa, a decentralized anti-fascist organization that has become a target of the Trump administration. Short for “anti-fascists,” antifa is not a single organization but rather an umbrella term for far-left militant groups that confront or resist neo-Nazis and white supremacists at demonstrations. President Donald Trump last fall signed an executive order designating antifa a domestic terrorist organization, even though there is no domestic equivalent to the State Department’s list of foreign terror organizations. The defendants deny any affiliation with antifa and maintain they attended the demonstration to show support for immigrants inside the detention center. Critics warn the case could have wide-reaching impact on protests given that organizations operating within the U.S. are supposed to be protected by First Amendment free-speech rights.Last week, federal prosecutors charged 15 people with impeding the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown in Minnesota. They claimed the demonstrators were members of antifa who conspired against the federal government to block arrests and deportations by setting up blockades around government buildings and throwing chunks of ice at federal vehicles, among other actions. ___Marcelo reported from New York. Blazers hire Wolves assistant Micah Nori as head coach, a year after Chauncey Billups' sudden exit
The Portland Trail Blazers picked Minnesota Timberwolves assistant Micah Nori as their next head coach on Tuesday, after making the playoffs for the first time in five years under the direction of interim coach Tiago Splitter.Nori, who spent the past five seasons with the Timberwolves, has interviewed for multiple head coach vacancies including the Chicago Bulls earlier this month, the New York Knicks last year, and the Los Angeles Lakers in 2024. Nori, 52, was the lead assistant under Timberwolves head coach Chris Finch while the club made the playoffs each season, won five series, and reached the Western Conference finals in 2023 and 2024. Nori, who began his NBA career in 1998 as a scout with the Toronto Raptors, has also been an assistant for the Raptors, the Sacramento Kings, the Denver Nuggets, and the Detroit Pistons. His son, Dante, is a minor league baseball player in the Philadelphia Phillies organization.Splitter, who was hired last week as head coach of the Chicago Bulls, was promoted from assistant to interim coach when then-head coach Chauncey Billups was arrested in October in a federal takedown of a sprawling gambling operation. Billups has pleaded not guilty to charges of wire fraud and money laundering. The Blazers went 42-40 with a five-game loss to NBA finalist San Antonio in the first round of the playoffs, the first postseason appearance and first time they finished with a winning record in five years.___AP Sports Writer Dave Campbell in Minneapolis contributed to this report.___AP NBA: https://apnews.com/hub/NBA

Islam fans starting to panic after realizing UFC 330’s Ian Garry ‘stopped 15 of 17 takedowns from Shavkat and Belal’
LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - DECEMBER 07: Ian Machado Garry of Ireland grapples with Shavkat Rakhmonov of Uzbekistan in a welterweight bout during the UFC 310 event at T-Mobile Arena on December 07, 2024 in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Photo by Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC) UFC welterweight champion Islam Makhachev will make the first defense of his 170-pound title when he tangles with No. 1-ranked Ian Garry atop the upcoming UFC 330 fight card on Paramount+, scheduled for Sat., Aug. 15, 2026 at Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.Garry is the betting underdog for their five-round showdown, so why are Islam fans starting to panic?“The truth is, I have this feeling in my heart that they know I’m the trickiest opponent for them,” Garry told Ariel Helwani. “That’s why the champion of the world, one of the most dominant athletes we’ve ever seen, called out Kamaru Usman to defend his world title fight against. Does that make sense? He knows I’m long, I’m tall. I’m fast. I’m rangy. I understand distance management and control. I don’t get hit very well. It’s never clean, it’s never connected.”Garry absorbs just 2.86 significant strikes per minute and avoids 52% of incoming fire. By comparison, Makhachev is hit with just 1.45 significant strikes per minute and defends 61% of blows coming his way. No doubt part of that success comes from his punishing top control.Garry defends 80% of all takedown attempts.“I’m tricky on the feet, I’m tricky on the ground,” Garry added. “I’m hard to touch, I’m hard to control. I’m hard to predict what I’m going to do. I’m hard to read. All of those are elite, stand up, and grappling skills. So, from my point of view, there is nobody in this division, that is a trickier matchup, for Islam Makhachev. I’m 6’3” — I’m long, I’m tall, I’m beautiful. I know how to use my hands, my feet. I know how to stop the takedown. I stopped 15 of 17 takedowns from Shavkat (Rakhmonov) and Belal (Muhammad). I know what I’m doing in this sport.”Shavkat was 2 for 10 on takedown attempts (UFC 310) compared to 0 for 7 for Belal (UFC Qatar).Makhachev (28-1) surrendered his 155-pound title and moved up to welterweight to capture the crown from Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 322 last fall. He’s currently tied with former middleweight champion Anderson Silva at 16 for longest win streak in UFC history. As for Garry (17-1), he rebounded from a decision loss to the still-injured Shavkat to win back-to-back fights over ranked contender Carlos Prates and the aforementioned Muhammad. To see who else is fighting at UFC 330 in August click here.

World Cup 2026: Cristiano Ronaldo becomes first man to score a goal in six World Cups
With history on the line, Cristiano Ronaldo had a tepid first game at the 2026 World Cup. All he needed was one goal, and Ronaldo would become the first man to score in six World Cups. It didn't come in his first game, where Ronaldo was held scoreless in a 1-1 draw against Congo DR. He didn't keep his fans waiting too long to accomplish that feat, though. Early in Tuesday’s game against Uzbekistan, Ronaldo officially set that record, scoring a goal in the fifth minute of the match to give Portugal a 1-0 lead. CRISTIANO RONALDO SCORES HIS FIRST GOAL IN THE 2026 WORLD CUP!#PORUZB#VaiDarPortugal#FIFAWorldCuppic.twitter.com/EpXVobdG1a— StatPad Football📊📈📉 (@StatPadFootball) June 23, 2026Ronaldo, 41, has set a number of records across his many years with Portugal. He already holds the most appearances and goals for a player with a men's national team. Entering the 2026 World Cup, Ronaldo had 228 appearances — and counting — with Portugal. He's scored a record 143 goals with the team. His time at the World Cup — as you might expect — has been similarly impressive.Cristiano Ronaldo World Cup statsHere's how Ronaldo has performed at each of his six World Cups:2006• Goals: 1• Assists: 0• Minutes played: 482• Results: Portugal went 4-1-2 over seven games, finishing in fourth place2010• Goals: 1 • Assists: 1• Minutes played: 360• Results: Portugal went 1-2-1 in four games, losing in the Round of 162014• Goals: 1 • Assists: 1 • Minutes played: 270• Results: Portugal went 1-1-1 in three games and lost in the group stage2018• Goals: 4• Assists: 0• Minutes played: 360• Results: Portugal went 1-2-1 in four games, losing in the Round of 162022• Goals: 1 • Assists: 0• Minutes played: 290 • Results: Portugal went 3-0-2 in five games, losing in the quarterfinals 2026*• Goals: 1 • Assists: 0• Minutes played: 90• Results: Portugal is 0-1-0 so far*2026 stats through June 22Lionel Messi has also shined at historic 2026 World CupIt's already been an historic World Cup. During Argentina's 2-0 win over Austria, Lionel Messi became the all-time leading goal scorer at the event. He has scored 18 goals — and counting — at his six World Cups. While Messi, like Ronaldo, has appeared in six different World Cups, he did not score a goal for Argentina in 2010, paving the way for Ronaldo to claim the record by scoring in six different World Cups. Ronaldo has some work to do if he wants to move up the all-time goal rankings at the World Cup. He entered the 2026 World Cup with eight goals under his belt. At least three other players — Messi, Kylian Mbappé and Harry Kane — all entered the event with more World Cup goals than Ronaldo.

Cristiano Ronaldo scores record-breaking World Cup goal
Cristiano Ronaldo has become the first player in World Cup history to score in six editions of the tournament after the Portugal captain found the net against Uzbekistan. Ronaldo, 41, came under fire following a drab performance against DR Congo in Portugal’s opening match but it took him less than six minutes to send his team ahead in the Group K encounter at the Houston Stadium. Joao Cancelo set up the goal with a fine run down the right flank before squaring a low cross into the penalty area. Ever the poacher, Ronaldo hooked a first time shot towards goal and slotted in just inside the near post to send his team ahead. Ronaldo made his first appearance at a World Cup in 2006 aged 21 and scored one goal as Portugal reached the semi-finals. He also scored one goal in both the 2010 and 2014 tournaments, where Portugal rather under-performed, before netting four at the 2018 World Cup. Ronaldo then scored one goal at the 2022 World Cup as Portugal reached the quarter-finals. While Ronaldo is yet to score a goal in the knockout stages of the World Cup, or appear in a World Cup final, he became just the second player to appear in six editions of the tournament, a day after rival Lionel Messi became the first. Messi scored his first ever World Cup hat-trick, and equalled Miroslav Klose’s all-time scoring record, in a 3-0 win over Algeria in Kansas City. He then went on to score twice more in Argentina’s 2-0 victory over Austria yesterday. While Messi failed to score in his five games at the 2010 World Cup, as Argentina were knocked out by Germany in the quarter-finals, the 38-year-old now holds the record for World Cup goals (18) as well as appearances (28). Ronaldo’s nine World Cup goals remains some way off Messi’s total, but he could feasibly pass Germany’s Lothar Matthaus for the second-most of all time if Portugal reach the knockout stages of the 48-team tournament. More follows.

Dems slam FCC for considering content warnings on shows with trans characters: “We reject the idea”
As the Federal Communications Commission considers whether to introduce warning labels for LGBTQ+ TV content, Democratic Members of Congress are speaking out against those efforts. On Monday, Congressional Equality Caucus (CEC) Chair Rep. Mark Takano (CA) and CEC member Rep. Jan Schakowsky (IL) sent a letter signed by 67 Congressional Democrats to FCC Chair Brendan Carr strongly opposing “efforts to censor the inclusion of transgender characters or topics” on TV. Related Conservative Christians are demanding the government require warning labels on LGBTQ+ TV content Under Carr’s leadership, the FCC issued an April 22 notice seeking public comment on whether the current TV ratings system, established under the Telecommunications Act of 1996, should be overhauled to include warnings for the “promotion” of “controversial gender identity issues.” According to the notice, parents have “raised concerns” that the current system rates “shows with transgender and gender nonbinary programming as appropriate for children and young children… undermining the ability of parents to make informed choices for their families.” According to right-wing outlet The National Review, a recent poll commissioned by evangelical non-profit Concerned Women for America claims that 87% of parents are in favor of TV ratings alerting viewers to LGBTQ+ content, along with violent and sexual content. Insights for the LGBTQ+ community Subscribe to our briefing for insights into how politics impacts the LGBTQ+ community and more. Subscribe to our Newsletter today At the same time, critics have blasted the FCC’s move as the latest attempt by the Trump administration to censor LGBTQ+ content and particularly the representation of transgender people. In a statement, LGBTQ+ media watchdog GLAAD described the attempt by Carr’s FCC “to manipulate the media, erode freedom of speech, and harm LGBTQ Americans.” In their June 22 letter to Carr, Congressional Democrats — including out reps Mark Takano, Becca Balint, Sarah McBride, Robert Garcia, Ritchie Torres, Angie Craig, and Mark Pocan — argued that the FCC lacks the authority to change the current ratings system. Under the 1996 Telecommunications Act, they note, Congress gave the FCC conditional authority to prescribe “guidelines and recommended procedures for the identification and rating of video programming that contains sexual, violent, or other indecent material” only if the Commission determines that video programming distributors did not have “established voluntary rules for rating” such content. The June 22 letter notes that “the current guidelines have worked for decades,” with 96% of parents expressing satisfaction with the current system in a 2024 survey conducted by the TV Oversight Management Board (TVOMB). The recent request for comment “appears to be an unlawful attempt by FCC to pressure broadcast licensees to censor content, including representation of transgender people, in their programming and just the latest political attempt of FCC to censor content the Administration does not agree with,” the letter reads. It goes on to note that the current rating system is “intended to address ‘sexual, violent, or other indecent material.’” “We reject the idea that the inclusion of transgender characters or topics is ‘sexual, violent, or indecent,’” Congressional Democrats wrote, adding that applying content warnings because of a TV character’s identity “would be harmful to transgender people and transgender acceptance and would harken back to a time when politicians sought to censor television programming because they included minorities.” “Any attempt by FCC to censor content because it includes transgender characters or topics would raise both legal and constitutional concerns,” the letter reads. The 67 reps concluded by urging the FCC “to abandon any efforts to seek to impose higher ratings on programs or content warnings because the program includes transgender characters or topics.” A coalition of over 40 organizations – including the Human Rights Campaign, the Transgender Law Center, the Trevor Project, and PFLAG National – jointly filed a comment opposing warnings for LGBTQ+ characters. The comment called such content warnings “unnecessary, unhelpful, and discriminatory.” “They do not serve to inform parents or guardians; they serve to further a strategic political agenda that has targeted a minority for exclusion from public view. Requiring a content warning based solely on the identity of a character establishes a dangerous precedent, and one with a troubling historical context.” In a statement, PFLAG National Vice President of Policy and Government Affairs Diego Sanchez, who is trans, said the FCC “has given us yet another example of what ‘small government’ means: small enough to fit in your living room; to interrupt family movie night; small enough to make home feel unsafe.” “Parents and families with transgender loved ones in particular know too well how big government actions impact their families directly,” he added, “because they feel those impacts before everyone else.” Subscribe to the LGBTQ Nation newsletter and be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Wilson Unveils Tennis Balls With Even More Smell
CHICAGO—Calling the update a major breakthrough for players who enjoy new-ball smell, Wilson Sporting Goods officials unveiled a new line of tennis balls Tuesday that contain even more smell. “We know tennis fans love that bright chemical fragrance, so we dipped these balls in as much smell as they could physically absorb,” said Wilson spokesperson Annie Intrabartola, adding that the company had reformulated its signature pressurized cans to release an incredibly potent plume of tennis ball odor capable of filling an entire home within seconds. “The second you crack a can open, it’ll be like a punch in the sinuses. Your couch will smell like tennis balls. Your clothes will smell like tennis balls. Your children will smell like tennis balls. If you play tennis with these balls, you will get a migraine. The smell is that strong.” Intrabartola added that the balls should not be used by individuals who are pregnant, over 55, immunocompromised, or taking medication for a heart condition. Texas OF Maddox Monsour enters the NCAA transfer portal
AUSTIN, TX - APRIL 19: Outfielder Maddox Monsour #32 of the Texas Longhorns on the field before the SEC baseball game between Texas Longhorns and Alabama Crimson Tide on April 19, 2026, at UFCU Disch-Falk Field in Austin, TX. (Photo by David Buono/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images) | Icon Sportswire via Getty Images The Texas Longhorns lost a promising young player to the NCAA transfer portal when outfielder Maddox Monsour announced his departure from the Forty Acres on Monday.I have officially entered the transfer portal from The University of Texas. pic.twitter.com/8KyKHrWieY— Mad Hacks Monsour (@madhacksmonsour) June 22, 2026The 5’11, 205-pounder has three seasons of eligibility remaining.Out of Carrllton (Ga.), Monsour signed with Texas in the 2025 recruiting class as a versatile player capable of playing multiple positions in the infield in addition to the outfield. Perfect Game ranked Monsour as the No. 228 player overall and the No. 47 outfielder and praised his quick-twitch athleticism and bat speed. As the Longhorns lost transfer portal additions Jack Moroknek and Kaleb Freeman to the 2025 MLB Draft and Jonah Williams underwent season-ending shoulder surgery, Monsour had opportunities to prove himself as a true freshman, moving into the starting lineup in early May against Mississippi State when Aiden Robbins moved from center to right.Monsour helped stabilize the team’s defense with his range in center field, and was dangerous on the base paths with seven steals, but was unable to make a positive impact at the plate. In 36 games with 14 starts, Monsour slashed .185/.267/.278 with only two extra-base hits.“We have confidence in Maddox. We’ve got to get Maddox have more confidence in himself. Maddox is learning [Anthony] Pack is fearless and has great belief in himself. And Maddox actually has that on the bases and he has it on defense,” Texas head coach Jim Schlossnagle said after the Mississippi State series.“He’s just a little tentative at home plate and we’re just trying to get that out of him. If you strike out, you strike out, but make sure you feel really aggressive getting your swing off. He’s getting there. He certainly has a lot of value on the bases and on defense. We’ve just got to continue to coach him up as a hitter.”Now that development will happen somewhere else after Monsour lost the starting job to redshirt senior Dariyan Pendergrass when the College of Charleston transfer returned from injury. Expect the Horns to continue targeting outfielders in the portal after landing a commitment from Kent State transfer Sawyer Solitaria on Sunday.

Liberty High AD Eric Gardner recovering after brain surgery
Peoria Liberty High School athletic director Eric Gardner had a tumor removed from his brain on June 12. He is resting comfortably at home and hopes to be back at work next month. The 53-year-old former Peoria Sunrise Mountain baseball coach said surgeons from Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix were able to remove all of the tumor. He is waiting for results to determine a cancer treatment going forward."I'm recovering pretty well," Gardner said. "I met with my surgeon the other day. They said it would be at least two to three more weeks, before they would have some pathology results and known what my chemo and radiation treatment will be."But it's a positive. We've had a tremendous amount of support from our community. Just lots of prayers. Lots of blessings."Medical bills are going to start to mount. A Schoolfundr campaign was started to raise money to help offset the costs.Gardner was 30 years into education when he retired. But he said he came back and was rehired by the Peoria Unified School District in March."Because I retired, then they rehired me, I'm not longer qualified for FMLA (Family and Medical Leave Act) with my district because I'm considered a new employee," he said. "I'm only considered for short-term disability. The district has contacted me and said they'll pay me up until my surgery, and whatever vacation days I have stored up. It's only like seven. Once that runs out, I will no longer be employed until I come back full-time."He said he hopes he'll be able to get back to work part-time in July and see how he can handle the pace of work. He oversees all of the sports programs at Liberty, which won the 6A boys basketball title this past school year."It's one of those Catch-22 things," he said. "Once these medical bills start to hit, it's going to be a heavy lift."Gardner's symptoms hit him fast and hard with migraines three weeks ago. He went into the hospital to get an MRI and a cyst was found. He said another MRI determined that a tumor needed to be removed."We don't have a level or stage of what level of cancer it could be," he said. "Right now, I'm actually recovering really well. There were some concerns about motor function and talking, because of where the tumor was."But they were able to remove every part of the tumor. That's a positive."Richard Obert has been covering high school sports since the 1980s for The Arizona Republic. He also covers Grand Canyon University athletics and the Arizona Rattlers.
