SPORTS.YAHOO.COMPablo Torre mentions concerning anecdote about Steve Ballmer and Clippers amid NBA investigationPablo Torre, who has been actively on the case involving Steve Ballmer and the Los Angeles Clippers, had concerning insight about the team owner’s involvement in the NBA’s investigation.Since 2025, Torre has been reporting on the blockbuster news that Ballmer and the Clippers allegedly circumvented the salary cap to pay millions of dollars to star forward Kawhi Leonard. The NBA had to start an investigation into the situation, having yet to conclude it with an official ruling.ESPN recently published a report that Ballmer won’t get any punishment from the end results of the investigation. The NBA almost immediately shut down the report, emphasizing that the league hasn’t made any conclusion to the investigation.Torre looked into the report and discussed it during his appearance on the Pablo Torre Finds Out show. He noted an anecdote about Ballmer negotiating with investigators, a concerning sign about the end results being biased in favor of the team owner.“The subject of the investigation does not get to negotiate with the group that is doing the investigating. What the outcome is, and what really happened here… is that Steve Ballmer has been negotiating a resolution to the investigation behind the scenes,” said Torre, per a video posted to Pablo Torre Finds Out on X, formerly Twitter.Torre also wrote that “We stand by our (ongoing) reporting on Kawhi Leonard and Steve Ballmer’s Clippers,” on his own X account. What Lies Ahead for Steve Ballmer and ClippersApr 21, 2025; Denver, Colorado, USA; Los Angeles Clippers owner Steve Ballmer (center) reacts in the fourth quarter against the Denver Nuggets during game two of first round for the 2025 NBA Playoffs at Ball Arena. Mandatory Credit: Isaiah J. Downing-Imagn Images Credit: IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect (Reuters)Pablo Torre wants transparency from the NBA’s investigation into the Clippers. If Steve Ballmer is making an impact on the results to avoid punishment, Torre will point that out to emphasize accountability from many basketball fans.Ballmer has been the Clippers’ owner since 2014 following the NBA’s decision to ban former team owner Donald Sterling from the league. The multi-billionaire has helped the franchise be relevant by being consistent playoff contenders, going as far as the 2021 Western Conference Finals.Los Angeles looks to be embracing a new era, trying to complete the trade with the Toronto Raptors involving Kawhi Leonard when the investigate concludes. The franchise hopes to turn to a new direction, wanting their long-term success to be promising instead of being in the middle of the pack.— Enjoy free coverage of the top news & trending stories with The Big Lead Newsletter —0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 78 Visualizações 0 Anterior -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMMatt LaFleur on Keisean Nixon’s ‘punished’ comments: 'Everybody’s in competition'Green Bay Packers cornerback Keisean Nixon caused a stir earlier this week when he said he felt like he was being “punished” for having to compete for a starting job. Nixon, 29, who started all 17 games for the Packers last season and finished with a career-high 17 pass breakups, has spent portions of practice taking reps with the second-team defense. On Tuesday, Matt LaFleur was asked to address those comments.“He loves making a headline, doesn’t he?” LaFleur said with a grin before practice. “You guys will take it different from me because the way I look at it is this: then I guess our whole team is being punished because everybody’s in competition. I’m a big believer that competition will bring the best out of people. I want everybody to play with a chip on their shoulder. If they feel like they have something to prove, you're probably gonna get more out of them."After going undrafted in 2019, Nixon is no stranger to proving himself. He spent his first three seasons with the Las Vegas Raiders before coming to Green Bay, where he’s evolved into a two-time All-Pro kick returner and quality corner. To be fair, Nixon isn’t sulking because he’s not a guaranteed starter. According to him, he’s still one of the first ones in the building, attacking every day like he has something to prove.“I'm not new to this. I'm true to this. I've been doing this for a while. So I know how the game goes. Just play ball,” Nixon said via Jason Wilde of Channel 3000. “Everybody knows my story. I came from the bottom, got to where I'm at. It doesn't bother me running with the twos, threes. It don't matter. It's hard to keep me off the field. So when it's time to play, I know what time it is.”Nixon has made a positive impression on his head coach, who didn’t seem displeased by the veteran corner’s comments. “I love Kei,” LaFleur said. "He’s been awesome since the day he’s been here. I don’t read any of that stuff so…I’m not going to micromanage what everybody says. If he feels a certain type of way, it is what it is, but I do think that it’s a benefit to the team to have people that you feel are capable to go in there and play, and we’ll all be better for that. Like I said, whether it’s corner or the offensive line, really every spot you better come to compete each and every day if you want to be out there.”Nixon still has until Sept. 13 to prove to the coaching staff that he should be one of the starting corners for the regular season opener against the Minnesota Vikings. The team’s top draft pick, Brandon Cisse, has impressed in his first training camp and could play a significant role as a rookie. Carrington Valentine has been sidelined with a hamstring injury but started opposite Nixon for 11 games in 2025. The team also signed free agent Benjamin St. Juste in the offseason to add some much-needed depth to the cornerback room.Even though Nixon is entering Year 8, the Packers have made it clear that he still has to earn the starting job. This article originally appeared on Packers Wire: Matt LaFleur on Keisean Nixon’s ‘punished’ comments: 'Everybody’s in competition'0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 81 Visualizações 0 Anterior -
linkSPORTS.YAHOO.COMAdam Copeland reveals AEW was open to John Cena retirement match: 'One place doesn't want it to'At the height of his WWE career, Adam Copeland (FKA Edge) had the perfect dance partner in John Cena. When the latter retired from professional wrestling in 2025, Copeland was a member of the AEW roster, causing the world to miss out on the two legendary rivals colliding one final time. That didn’t mean there wasn’t some openness to the idea, though — at least on one side. Copeland, who’s currently one-half of the AEW World Tag Team Champions with his longtime friend and fellow wrestling legend Christian Cage, revealed Tuesday on "The Ariel Helwani Show" that a Cena match was entirely possible. He fully believes AEW founder Tony Khan would have allowed the groundbreaking crossover dream match. It all came down to WWE being willing to play ball."Here's what I realized: They could link [doors] to each other. One place doesn't want it to. So, OK," Copeland told Uncrowned."Absolutely [Khan would have allowed it]. I truly believe that. Because he knows what it would have meant to a very large segment of the wrestling fans. And that's important."Although Copeland would’ve loved to have one last dance with Cena, just as the majority of the wrestling fan base would’ve, he understands the broader business landscape. And despite their lack of a match, they still paid tributes to one another from their separate sides of the pond, using each other's signature moves in matches."I can see it from all sides. I really can," Copeland said. "John knew I was there in spirit. ... We kind of made our bones on each other, and we're both aware of that fact. Both of our careers would have been great, but I think that angle [between us in the 2000s], that story, those two opponents kind of propelled us to a different place."[But] having been [at WWE] long enough and kind of knowing how the mindset is there, I realized [one last match] ain't gonna happen. If it were up to me and John? Sure."Ultimately, Cena revisited as many of his biggest rivalries as timing allowed during his year-long retirement tour, from names like Randy Orton to AJ Styles to Brock Lesnar. Cena's final match eventually came to a modern-day legend in the making, Gunther. The ending of Cena's career was polarizing, to say the least. Known for the majority of his career as the man who "never gave up," Cena fatefully succumbed to Gunther's patented rear-naked choke sleeper hold in his final in-ring appearance, tapping out to take the L.John Cena and Edge made magic together during their WWE heydays.Don Arnold via Getty ImagesIn the end, Copeland believes the community’s sentiments about the match are meaningless. As long as Cena is fine with how he went out, that's all that really matters."To me, he's the one who has to be at peace," Copeland said. "The other people can move on. They can be worked up about it and this and that when they go back to think about it, but John is the one who has to walk in John's shoes every day. So if John's cool with it, then who am I to knock people over it?"Copeland has been on a noteworthy run of his own since he returned to action in 2023 with AEW alongside Cage. The champs are gearing up for their big title match at Wembley Stadium against The Young Bucks at AEW All In 2026 next Sunday, Aug. 30.Having been with AEW for three years now, Copeland has had a blast every step of the way."It's been fun — and I say that word, and it sounds like a simple word, but that was really the goal. To have fun," Copeland said. "I'm not chasing championships or the props, let's face it. I'm not doing that. I just wanted to come, have fun and create with some performers I'd never had a chance to touch. That and the fact that I knew I'd get a chance to team with [Cage] again, and go against teams like FTR and the Bucks. Those were big things to want to be able to try and do. I knew there was only one place to do that."I kind of ran the gamut with WWE. There wasn't much left to do for either the company or me. To me, that writing was pretty clearly on the wall. It was more along the lines of, 'Am I going to go to AEW, or am I going to retire?' During [my last WWE match] with Sheamus, I still didn't really know because I was having so much fun out there with him and just loving that experience, that I truly wasn't sure."Then, looking at the roster in AEW and talking to Tony and kind of looking at the landscape, it became a no-brainer the more I looked at it."Copeland, 52, said he had a talk with his family once his WWE contract expired and it was time to decide how much longer he wanted to wrestle. If AEW wasn't an option, the WWE Hall of Famer admits he certainly wouldn't be an active roster member anywhere in 2026."I think I probably would have come back for a year with WWE, and then retired however everyone wanted it to happen, and that would be that," Copeland said."This kind of breathed new life into me, in terms of the creative avenues that we can take. Because again, I felt we'd kind of driven down most of those avenues with WWE, personally."Regarding his inevitable retirement, Copeland doesn't have a definitive timeline for when he'll hang up his boots for good. All he knows is that it’ll be in his current home with AEW."That's where I want to be," Copeland said. "And I know that may disappoint a lot of people, but it really, really — I love it there. I love the company. I love the attitude. I love the exuberance. I love the drive. I love the excitement that I see from the locker room. Yeah. I don't want to go anywhere else. I'm good."I did everything I can do there [in WWE] and then some. And again, I think [WWE] got everything out of me and then some that they could have. For the better. Which is really all you can ask for in a relationship or a partnership."0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 82 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMBills at Browns: 4 storylines to watch for ahead of preseason Week 2The Buffalo Bills and Cleveland Browns will continue their 2026 NFL exhibition season on Saturday when the two teams do battle at Huntington Bank Field. As is always the case with the preseason, the Bills will have close eyes on all the action as the team makes decisions on who will land the final 53-man roster. It will be the first time Buffalo head coach Joe Brady will be in charge of that.Leading up to kickoff, there will be few headlines to keep in mind before this matchup. With that, here are Bills Wire's four storylines to watch for ahead of Bills vs. Browns:Do starters/ Josh Allen play? It's the preseason and unless it's the third and final contest of the exhibition season (since everyone rests then), it must be asked: Does Buffalo head coach Joe Brady play his starters? It is an interesting dilemma if you take the coaching staff into consideration. On offense, Brady has led the unit for years. There is little reason to put quarterback Josh Allen & Co. in harms way. Defensively, it will only be the second game the starters will get a feel for the system new defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard wants to run... so it would be understandable to toss starters out there for a few snaps.Any more Highmark Stadium outrage?Players and coaches have already commented on their disapproval of the grass field at Highmark Stadium. Installing a grass field is appreciated by players, but the upkeep of it was the complaint. The Bills and Browns do not play in Orchard Park this weekend... even so, you can still expect the commentary. Injuries are mountingIt's only the preseason so some of these are just veteran rest days... but needing those this early in the year? The likes of wide receiver Keon Coleman was one of the one that were a new addition to the list below, and he had on a walking boot at practice on Tuesday.More updates to following throughout the week. Kickoff is not until Saturday. What gives? The two teams previously agreed upon having a joint practice on Thursday. That's always a test that could lead to some sparks and fights during the workout. WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMFederal judge shuts down Trump’s attempt to end ACA’s gender-affirming care coverageA federal judge on Friday ruled against a Trump administration provision to to remove gender-affirming care as an essential health benefit covered under the Affordable Care Act, a 2010 law (also known as Obamacare) which requires the federal government to subsidize such benefits. Senior U.S. District Judge Nathaniel Gorton (an appointee of former President George H.W. Bush) ruled that Trump’s Department of Health exceeded its authority when, in 2025, it issued the Marketplace Integrity and Affordability Final Rule. The rule said that, beginning in 2026, new individual and small-group insurance plans would exclude certain gender-affirming procedures from the federal government’s list of pre-approved and subsidized essential health benefits, Advocate reported. Related Court allows Trump administration to access trans patients’ records Twenty-one states sued the administration over the rule’s provisions, stating that the department violated federal rule-making laws while illegally revoking people’s healthcare coverage and harming them with increased costs. Gender-affirming care is critical to the emotional and physical well-being of transgender individuals, and the Trump Administration does not have the authority to unlawfully make this care less accessible and more expensive for patients and families.” The Trump administration has taken numerous steps to eradicate trans people from all public life, including denying them essential, life-saving, gender-affirming care in hospitals and prisons nationwide. Administration officials have threatened to end all federal healthcare funding to hospitals that provide gender-affirming care for youth. The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals recently upheld the Trump administration’s enforcement of administrative subpoenas from the Department of Justice (DOJ) seeking the personal and confidential health records of trans youth. Past court rulings quashed the subpoenas, calling the DOJ’s campaign a “fishing expedition” intended to “harass” and “intimidate,” and to end gender-affirming care through “fear.” Subscribe to the LGBTQ Nation newsletter and be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 47 Visualizações 0 Anterior -
linkAPNEWS.COMSan Diego County will stop letting federal immigration agents train at local firing rangesA federal agent wears an Immigration and Customs Enforcement badge in New York, June 10, 2025. (AP Photo/Yuki Iwamura, File)2026-08-18T21:55:38Z A Southern California county will stop letting federal immigration authorities train at a local firing range over concerns about the Trump administration’s violent crackdown on immigrants.San Diego County supervisors voted 3-2 on Tuesday to end contracts with Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Protection to train at a county-owned facility near the Mexican border and a Navy facility leased by the county. The agencies that conduct immigration enforcement and run customs and immigration checks on the busy U.S.-Mexico border have had contracts for years to train at the facilities.“Federal immigration agents have harmed our communities many different ways here locally and throughout the nation,” said Monica Montgomery Steppe, one of the supervisors who voted to end the contracts. “We just don’t want to be complicit in that.” The vote comes after residents clamored for the county of more than 3 million people on the U.S.-Mexico border to end the contracts. They said it would be a way to stop helping the Trump administration’s mass deportation campaign that has split up families and led to deadly clashes between federal agents and residents in communities from Minnesota to Maine.Other communities including the nearby city of Escondido and others in New York and Minnesota also have debated whether to let immigration agents use their firing ranges, but opted to keep contracts intact. Jim Desmond, a San Diego County supervisor who voted against the move, said law enforcement agencies should be working and training together and making agents travel farther to get training doesn’t accomplish anything. Read More “ICE has overreached and overstepped, but how do you fix that? You fix it with more training,” he said.Rodney Scott, who heads Customs and Border Protection, said the agency relies on the county’s firing range to train 1,700 officers. Without it, he said, he’d send them elsewhere for mandatory firearms training, which will reduce local staffing and affect trade and travel across the U.S.-Mexico border.“It is unprecedented for a local partner, such as the San Diego County Board of Supervisors, to knowingly undermine border security and put our communities at risk,” Scott said in a statement. In San Diego, CBP has had an agreement to use the county’s training center since 2017 and ICE has had one since 2021. Federal agents have logged more than 3,300 training hours at the center since 2024, according to a letter from supervisors who proposed ending the contracts.ICE also has had an agreement since 2022 to use a Navy-owned firing range that the county leases on Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, the letter said.San Diego officials who voted to end the contracts said they want to keep the trust of the region’s immigrant communities and have worked hard to distinguish local police from federal immigration agents. Advocates said the Trump administration has tasked other federal agencies to help carry out immigration enforcement and with authorities wearing masks and street clothing, it is challenging to know which agency they work for. “Our community is a home, not a target,” Terra Lawson-Remer, the board’s chair, said this week. She was one of two supervisors who proposed ending the contracts. “If the Trump administration wants to spend billions on this law and deportation agenda, they can use their own federal resources to carry it out.” AMY TAXIN Taxin writes about food, farming and water in California for The Associated Press. linkAPNEWS.COMNonprofit sues US as it pushes to auction massive tracks of water around American SamoaThis photo provided by the U.S. Geological Survey shows polymetallic nodules in a sample from the seafloor that was collected on April 14, 2026, in U.S. waters off American Samoa. (USGS via AP, File)2026-08-18T21:50:36Z SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — A legal environmental group sued the U.S. government on Tuesday, a month after the Trump administration announced plans to auction off massive sections of water surrounding American Samoa for potential deep-sea mining.Earthjustice filed the federal lawsuit against the U.S. National Marine Fisheries Service and U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick on behalf of two groups: Fa‘asao Amerika Samoa and Conservation Council for Hawai‘i.The legal nonprofit is requesting that a judge order the National Marine Fisheries Service to stop moving forward with its plans and to comply with the Endangered Species Act and other federal laws.“The United States has never opened its waters to deep-sea mining. Until now,” the lawsuit stated. It noted that the U.S. plans to sell leases with the intention of allowing mining across some 33 million acres (about 51,560 square miles) of seabed off American Samoa that is rich in minerals including nickel, cobalt and manganese that are used to build batteries, electronics and other products. The lawsuit stated that the U.S. first must ensure that such activity will not destroy critical habitats or push species closer to extinction. The environmental group called a recent decision by the National Marine Fisheries Service that leases would not affect critical habitat or endangered or threatened species “a wholly arbitrary and capricious determination.” “The Samoan people rely upon a healthy ocean ecosystem,” the lawsuit reads. “This ecosystem feeds Samoan households, protects shorelines, and has formed the basis of many cultural practices that have existed for over a millennium.” Read More It noted that many animals around American Samoa also migrate to Hawaiian waters, including sea turtles known as “i‘a sa,” which means “sacred fish.”American Samoa views whales, sharks, giant manta rays and other animals as sacred, and there’s a ban on catching or harming such species. The environmental group asserted that failure to comply with U.S. acts is harming “professional, scientific, educational, aesthetic, spiritual, and cultural interests” in American Samoan and Hawaiian waters. It said that waters surrounding American Samoa support “rare and diverse marine species” including shallow and mesophotic coral reefs, sponges, crabs, deep-sea cucumbers, sea turtles and hundreds of coral and fish species. The organization noted that the waters serve as habitat to five sea turtle populations and four types of whales that are all endangered, as well as five coral species and four animals including the giant manta ray that are threatened. The area that the U.S. envisions leasing is located 57 miles (92 kilometers) from the Rose Atoll National Wildlife Refuge. The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump is seeking to expedite mining permits even as dozens of countries have called for a moratorium or ban on deep sea mining because of environmental concerns including noise, light and suffocating dust storms.“To date, there has not been a commercial seabed mining operation established anywhere in the world,” Earthjustice said in its lawsuit. The International Seabed Authority, a Jamaica-based U.N. body that oversees deep international waters, has authorized exploration licenses for nearly two dozen contractors, but it has not allowed any commercial mining. Much of the ongoing exploration is centered in the Clarion-Clipperton Fracture Zone, which covers 1.7 million square miles (4.5 million square kilometers) between Hawaii and Mexico. The U.S. has not ratified the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea, so the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration regulates U.S. exploration and commercial recovery of minerals.A spokesperson with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s fisheries service told The Associated Press on Tuesday that it was unable to comment on litigation matters. The U.S. Department of Commerce did not immediately respond to a request for comment.___Follow AP’s coverage of Latin America and the Caribbean at https://apnews.com/hub/latin-america0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 37 Visualizações 0 Anterior

linkAPNEWS.COMFake polling from mysterious company highlights danger of unvetted election surveysA close-up view of "I Voted" stickers at Maples Elementary School on primary election day, Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2026, in Dearborn, Mich. (AP Photo/Nic Antaya) CORRECTION: Corrects location to Dearborn NOT Detroit2026-08-18T22:07:57Z NEW YORK (AP) — Locked in a competitive reelection race, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass declared on social media last week that a new poll was evidence that her campaign was “gaining momentum.”Just a few days later, the truth emerged: The poll was fabricated. The California results were among at least three “polls” across three states posted online this month by Median Strategies, a previously unknown organization that admitted to the Los Angeles Times on Monday that the purported results were fake. The company wrote before shuttering its website this week that it “was created as a short-term social experiment examining how purported polling information could enter and spread through the political information ecosystem without independent verification.”The post offered no explanation of who was behind the “experiment” or for what purpose. The trajectory of the California poll offers a cautionary tale about the perils of trusting unvetted polling. While high-quality independent polls still exist, they appear amid a slew of other surveys produced by outside groups, campaigns or super PACs or using undisclosed or questionable methodologies. It can be a struggle to make sense of the findings — and as the latest episode shows, even campaigns may end up falling for falsified data.“This is much bigger than one fake poll,” said Chris Wilson, a veteran Republican pollster who now leads the public opinion firm EyesOver. “It’s never been easier to make invented numbers look legitimate, and campaigns and outside groups have every incentive to amplify anything favorable before anyone verifies it.” The Median Strategies fake polls, none of which appeared in AP coverage, claimed to evaluate support in the Democratic primary for governor in Wisconsin, the gubernatorial race in Nevada, and the mayoral race in Los Angeles. Read More The Los Angeles poll, which purported to show Bass, an incumbent Democrat, leading councilmember Nithya Raman, a progressive Democrat, by about 12 percentage points in the mayoral race, was shared by the Bass campaign on social media and covered by the California Post before it was revealed to be bogus. The Bass campaign has since deleted its social media post promoting the poll, but defended itself by saying that it “was reported on by multiple news outlets.”“Any bad faith attempts to influence elections should be investigated and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” Bass campaign spokesman Alex Stack said. Transparency is critical for evaluating poll findingsMedian’s “findings” were shared by polling aggregation accounts on social media. They were not, however, included in the databases of major independent aggregators, including The New York Times, Real Clear Politics or FiftyPlusOne. The New York Times and FiftyPlusOne noted that the polls were released without basic information that was needed for vetting, such as who was running the firm. When they reached out, Median Strategies did not respond to requests for more information.“When the poll was released, it lacked basic information about how it was conducted and who was behind it,” Will Davis, director of Election Data Analytics at The New York Times, wrote in an email to The Associated Press. “Releasing this type of information is standard practice for pollsters, and because that information was not provided, we did not include it.”Mary Radcliffe, Head of Research at FiftyPlusOne, also thought the methodology statement for the Wisconsin poll was missing key details, including the source for the voter file the company claimed to have used and the vendor who fielded part of the sample. Median did not respond to her questions, so the polls were not included in FiftyPlusOne’s database. But Radcliffe noted that her method for screening polls is not infallible.“There is a universe where they could have come up with plausible answers to my questions,” she said. “This is an industry built on trust. I have to trust that people are answering my questions in good faith.”While admissions of falsified polling data are rare, they are not without precedent. In 2010, for instance, the left-leaning blog Daily Kos said that polling for its website, conducted by a firm called Research 2000, was fraudulent. But it’s common for pollsters to release polls with minimal information about how the survey was conducted, what questions were asked, or who was behind it. Higher-quality polls rely on expensive methodologies, such as randomized sampling, so many pollsters opt for cheaper solutions. In addition, many election polls are conducted by campaigns or super PACs with a stake in the outcome of the race. This can leave few — if any — reliable and independent polls to evaluate in contests like midterm primaries. Before writing about any poll, AP verifies that it meets high standards of transparency and methodological rigor. But even high-quality polls have some amount of error, which underscores the importance of examining each finding with caution. Prediction markets introduce more complexityThe introduction of prediction market platforms like Kalshi and Polymarket gives polls a different significance for people betting on election outcomes. The posts about Wisconsin and Nevada drew little reaction and were not accompanied by any discernible movement on the two prediction markets when they were released, but there were some shifts on both platforms after Bass shared the false Median Strategies numbers. On Kalshi, the price of a “yes” contract on Bass winning the Los Angeles mayoral election rose two cents, from about 63 cents to about 65 cents, within fifteen minutes of Median’s post. On Polymarket, roughly twenty separate accounts traded thousands of contracts in Bass’s favor six minutes after the tweet. In the days leading up to Bass’s post about Median, trading on the LA mayoral election had been thin, with a typical trade over that week being under ten dollars. While the price movements were small, the concentration of trading on both platforms shortly after the release of Median’s fake poll was not. Before it was taken down, the Median Strategies website included a statement claiming that “no individual involved held or traded any position in an election prediction market, betting market, or other financial instrument tied to the races covered by Median Strategies.”Motivations for the fake data remain unclearMore than a week after the firm began sharing “results,” it remains unclear who is behind Median Strategies. No one responded to AP’s questions sent to an email address listed on its website, which was created little more than a week ago. Before it was taken offline, the only content on the site was a statement indicating that the firm “has concluded its polling project and will not publish additional polls.”“All previously published polling releases have been withdrawn and should not be cited or treated as genuine polling data,” it wrote. The firm highlighted what it called “a credibility problem” in its first social media post earlier in the month.“Polling has a credibility problem. Ours is the fix: no partisan clients, no campaign or party money, numbers that go wherever the data takes them even when it’s inconvenient. linkAPNEWS.COM5 Buss siblings say they still intend to sell Lakers minority shares despite Jeanie’s oppositionLos Angeles Lakers owner Jeanie Buss attends the team's NBA preseason basketball game against the Minnesota Timberwolves, Oct. 12, 2022, in Los Angeles. (AP Photo/Jae C. Hong, File)2026-08-18T22:22:03Z LOS ANGELES (AP) — Five of the six children of former Los Angeles Lakers owner Jerry Buss still intend to sell their remaining minority ownership of the NBA team despite the opposition of their sister, Jeanie.Johnny, Jimmy, Janie, Joey and Jesse Buss reiterated their stance Tuesday in a statement issued to ESPN, saying they “remain united in that decision. ... We intend to move forward thoughtfully, respectfully and through the appropriate process.”The five Buss siblings said Monday they had voted to sell the family trust’s remaining 17.8% stake to Josh Kushner and Bob Iger, who are acquiring majority ownership from Mark Walter.Jeanie Buss announced her intention to fight back against the plan later Monday through a letter from her attorney, Adam Streisand. Jeanie Buss claims the siblings can’t sell the trust’s ownership shares without her approval. If the five siblings are able to sell their remaining ownership, Jeanie Buss would no longer be able to serve as the Lakers’ governor, a position she is scheduled to hold until at least 2030 under the deal struck with Walter last year when he purchased majority control of the team at a valuation of $10 billion. The Buss siblings reportedly made nearly half a billion dollars apiece in that sale, but the 17-time NBA champion team is considered to be worth even more with Walter flipping his ownership to Kushner and Iger at a valuation of $12.5 billion. Jeanie Buss has been the Lakers’ governor since Jerry Buss’ death in 2013, and she led the family’s decision to sell to Walter, who is now under federal investigation for tax issues. Not all of the siblings were in favor of relinquishing majority control of the Lakers last year, and Joey and Jesse were fired from their front-office jobs with the team last November. Read More The Buss siblings have been in frequent conflict since their father’s death in 2013, with Jeanie firing Jim from his job as the Lakers’ head of basketball operations in 2017, followed a week later by a lawsuit against her brothers amid an attempt by Jim and Johnny to oust Jeanie from her role as the Lakers’ controlling owner.___AP NBA: https://apnews.com/NBA GREG BEACHAM Beacham is a sports writer in California.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 37 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMLeeds United Accept €15m Deal After Late Transfer Twist: Good Decision?Leeds United Accept €15m Deal After Late Transfer Twist: Good Decision?Leeds United have accepted Torino’s improved offer for their 28-year-old goalkeeper Lucas Perri after a late transfer tussle pushed the Italian club to increase their package.Leeds United accept Torino’s improved offerSport Witness, citing Tuesday’s print edition of Tuttosport, reports that Torino agreed a €1 million loan fee with a €14 million option to buy. Marseille briefly entered the race by offering European football, which pressured Torino into improving its financial terms. The goalkeeper had already given Torino his word, and the report says he was due to travel for his medical on Tuesday. The proposed €15 million package gives Leeds United a capital gain. They signed the Brazilian from Lyon for €16 million last summer, while his current book value stands at about €12 million. The accepted deal therefore gives the Yorkshire club an accounting benefit despite the uncertain sporting outcome. For Leeds United, the structure raises a fair question. The club accept uncertainty. Torino pay €1 million now, while Torino can decide whether to spend €14 million.Perri’s 2025/26 league campaign gave mixed evidence. He made 16 Premier League appearances, conceded 29 goals and kept three clean sheets amid inconsistent form and injury. Against West Ham, he saved penalties from Jarrod Bowen and Pablo as Leeds won 4-2. The 28-year-old has Brazil call-ups behind him, while his 197cm frame and reflexes remain assets.T4O take: Leeds United needed an exit after TraffordLONDON, ENGLAND – APRIL 26: Lucas Perri of Leeds United reacts during the Emirates FA Cup Semi Final match between Chelsea and Leeds United on April 26, 2026 in London, England. (Photo by Justin Setterfield/Getty Images)James Trafford changed the calculation. Leeds United paid £45 million, around €52 million, for the England goalkeeper, making him their record signing and leaving Perri surplus.Perri’s distribution remains the concern. His passing accuracy sat near 53 per cent, and high presses punished that weakness. Serie A could offer a different test. Torino can use a tighter structure and emphasise his shot-stopping.Leeds United carry the greater riskTorino secure a 6’5″ keeper with top-flight experience, then let Ignazio Abate assess him. If Perri thrives, €14 million looks cheap. If his shaky form returns, Torino can return him next summer, leaving Leeds United with a weaker market asset. That makes the deal a strong gamble for Torino. Leeds United collect only €1 million after paying €16 million last year, while the option remains non-obligatory. Clearing Perri’s wages makes sense, but Trafford’s arrival reduced Leeds’ leverage and gave Torino room to dictate terms. For Leeds United, this feels like damage control.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 44 Visualizações 0 Anterior -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMReal Madrid transfer strategy revealed as Mourinho waits on exitsReal Madrid transfer strategy revealed as Mourinho waits on exitsReal Madrid Transfer News: Endrick Stays as Mourinho Shapes Final Weeks of WindowReal Madrid rarely do anything quietly, and even in a week without a blockbuster arrival, there is still plenty to read between the lines at the Bernabeu. According to The Athletic, the most important development concerns Endrick, the Brazilian forward whose immediate future has been the subject of considerable chatter. For now, that noise can be parked. The teenager is staying. That alone says much about the current mood inside Madrid. A club of this scale is always planning for today and tomorrow, weighing instant need against long-term stardom. In Endrick, they have one of world football’s most intriguing young attacking talents, and the decision to keep him points to a coaching staff that still sees practical use for him this season, not merely future promise. The report states: “The most notable news was the decision that Brazilian striker Endrick will stay, despite rumours linking him with a loan move to Aston Villa and Roma.” In the churn of summer speculation, clarity matters. This is clear. Real Madrid, Jose Mourinho and the player are aligned, at least for the opening phase of the campaign.Endrick stay reflects faith and necessityThere is a tactical thread running through this decision. The Athletic reports that “The Portuguese coach does not see Bernardo Silva or Federico Valverde as regular performers on the right wing, so in addition to Yan Diomande and Brahim Diaz, he wants Endrick as an option for that position as well as at centre-forward.” That is revealing in several ways.First, Mourinho appears to be defining roles firmly. Valverde’s vast gifts remain more persuasive in central and transitional zones, where his running power and authority can tilt matches. Bernardo Silva, if used in wider areas, would clearly be viewed more as a situational solution than a weekly answer. Endrick, then, becomes more than a young striker waiting politely in line. He becomes squad architecture.Photo IMAGOSecond, the modern elite forward line thrives on movement, rotation and unpredictability. Endrick offering cover on the right and through the middle gives Madrid flexibility in a season that will inevitably test depth. The best squads are assembled with multiple routes to the same destination. Endrick may still be raw, but raw talent at Madrid often matures quickly under pressure.Real Madrid transfer policy remains tied to exitsPerhaps the most significant line in the wider strategic sense is brutally straightforward: “The message from the club, which has also been communicated internally, is that someone has to leave in order for further signings to be made.” That is a familiar Real Madrid principle in modern form. Glamour may frame the institution from the outside, but the internal logic is colder and more disciplined.Madrid are not moving through the market like a club in panic. They are behaving like one that believes in squad hierarchy, financial order and controlled timing. That can frustrate supporters who always hope for one more statement signing. It can also be wise. Dressing rooms need oxygen, and pathways need space.Still, the squad is not being treated as complete. The Athletic says, “Mourinho is keen on adding another centre-back and a midfielder, so Madrid are keeping an eye on various positions and players.” That is a concise summary of what many observers would consider sensible business. Another centre-back would strengthen the spine, while a midfielder would preserve balance across a long season in which injuries, suspensions and tactical variation are inevitable.Madrid’s transfer model has long mixed opportunism with authority. They do not want to be dragged into every market whim. If another signing is to arrive, there must be room, financial and sporting. That approach can look cautious in August. By March, it can look coherent.Departures, Jacobo Ortega and squad tensionThere has also been movement out of the club. “Meanwhile, reserve team striker Jacobo Ortega was announced on Monday as a new signing for Strasbourg.” This is no ordinary academy exit. The report adds that “The academy graduate was sold to the French club for around €10million, despite not having made a first-team appearance. Madrid retain a right of first refusal and a 30 per cent sell-on clause for the 20-year-old, who was part of the under-19 team that won the UEFA Youth League last season.”That is sharp business. Madrid monetise talent, preserve future influence and avoid severing all connection. It is a model increasingly favoured by elite clubs with fertile academies. If Ortega flourishes, Madrid retain a route back in. If he excels elsewhere and moves on, they still benefit. Then there is the more delicate matter of possible senior exits. “The Athletic has reported that Madrid and Mourinho are open to Raul Asencio and Eduardo Camavinga leaving, but there have been no concrete moves.” Those names naturally command attention, especially Camavinga, whose talent and versatility have long marked him as a major asset.Yet openness to departure is not the same as urgency to sell. At top clubs, such discussions are often about optionality. If an important sale is needed to unlock other business, the club will examine the landscape. That appears to be the stage Madrid are in now, scanning, measuring, waiting. This is where Mourinho’s influence will be crucial. He is a manager who likes clarity in profiles and purpose in his squad. If he wants a centre-back and a midfielder, he may be prepared to trim elsewhere. Madrid’s final fortnight of the window could therefore hinge less on who they admire and more on who is prepared to move on.For supporters, the present picture is nuanced rather than dramatic. Endrick stays, which is a vote of confidence. Further signings remain possible, but only with exits. Sergio Martinez is a name for the future, maybe the near future. Ortega’s sale is smart and modern. Camavinga and Asencio sit in that uneasy category of players discussed more than advanced. It all leaves Real Madrid in a familiar posture, composed on the surface, calculating underneath. Great clubs are often defined in August by restraint as much as ambition. The noise around Madrid may yet rise before the deadline, but the central message from this report is one of controlled intent. Mourinho wants specific reinforcements. The club wants equilibrium. Endrick, meanwhile, has his chance to force the next chapter himself. Our ViewAs a curious Real Madrid supporter, I quite like the Endrick decision. There is always a temptation to send a young forward on loan quickly, especially when minutes look hard to find, but this feels like the right moment to keep him close. If Mourinho truly sees him “as an option for that position as well as at centre-forward”, then Endrick has a real opening. Not a promise, but an opening. At Madrid, that is precious. The January review also feels fair. If he plays, excellent. If he does not, then a loan can still happen with better information. That is smarter than making a rushed call in August. My only concern is the line that “someone has to leave in order for further signings to be made.” It makes sense financially and structurally, but supporters will hope it does not leave the squad one piece short in midfield or defence. If Mourinho wants a centre-back and a midfielder, the club should back him decisively. Real Madrid usually win when preparation is ruthless, not reactive.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 44 Visualizações 0 Anterior -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMNFL analyst says Drew Allar won’t get chance to start for SteelersPITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA - AUGUST 13: Drew Allar #16 of the Pittsburgh Steelers in action during the game against the Green Bay Packers at Acrisure Stadium on August 13, 2026 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. (Photo by Joe Sargent/Getty Images) | Getty Images Drew Allar shined in his first preseason games with the Pittsburgh Steelers following an up-and-down journey at Penn State. The third-round quarterback led touchdown drives on each of his first three possessions in a Steelers uniform and completed 10-of-13 passes for 153 yards, two passing touchdowns, and a rushing score. It was a good first impression for Allar, who looked comfortable in the pocket and didn’t miss the easy throws he was knocked for in college.Despite the strong first game, albeit the preseason, it didn’t make former NFL offensive lineman and current FOX analyst Geoff Schwartz more optimistic that he is going to be the Steelers’ next franchise quarterback.“Drew Allar is unlikely to get a chance to be good in the NFL because he’s not going to get an opportunity to play,” Schwartz said via FOX Sports Radio. “If he’s the third-string guy, when is he ever gonna play?”Aaron Rodgers is solidified as the 2026 starting quarterback, and Will Howard continues to battle Mason Rudolph for the backup spot.Allar is surely going to make the roster, but it doesn’t appear that he’s in play to be QB2. The lack of reps could hurt Allar’s chances of proving to the Steelers that he’s their guy moving forward, and Schwartz sees the Steelers picking a quarterback in 2027.“Because next year the Steelers are going to draft a quarterback,” Schwartz said. “He might never get a chance in this league.”The 2027 draft class is expected to be stocked with highly-talented quarterbacks like Arch Manning, Dante Moore, LaNorris Sellers, and others, but so was last year. The 2026 group didn’t end up being nearly as advertised, and Allar was considered a first-round pick entering the college football season.Allar will have two more chances to showcase his skill as the Steelers host the New York Jets on Friday and will play in Buffalo next Thursday against the Bills before kicking off the regular season against Atlanta on September 13.Let us know what you think in the comments. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMBold predictions for each of 32 NFL teams for 2026 seasonThe NFL season is rapidly approaching. After this weekend, there will be one preseason game left for each of the 32 teams to get through before making it to the games that count. What better time to make bold prediction for every team? Some of them will be risky business while others might seem obvious. Either way, there will be plenty of interest in how every team does this year. Will coaches make it to the end of the season or see their time end? What players will thrive and what players will nosedive. Some bold predictions for the 2026 NFL season:Arizona CardinalsNot exactly going out on a limb here, but the Cardinals will finish last -- again -- in the NFC West. Tight end Trey McBride will have the most receptions, yards and touchdowns for anyone at the position.Atlanta FalconsNeither Michael Penix Jr. nor Tua Tagovailoa will reach double figures in starts. Penix should be the QB once he is totally recovered from last year's injury. Tagovailoa is simply a player who is always waiting to get hurt. Not so much fragile as just having taken the brunt of too many hits already.Baltimore RavensDerrick Henry will become the seventh running back to rush for 1,000 yards in a season at the age of 32. Six others, including John Riggins twice, has reached four figures at an age older than 32.Buffalo BillsJames Cook will rush for fewer than the 1,621 yards he has in 2025 and will not lead the NFL in rushing again.Carolina PanthersThe Panthers will finish with a record that is better than .500 for the first time since the 2017 season.Cincinnati BengalsThe Bengals will finally put it all together and win the AFC North. Much of that will because the NFL will have no answer for Joe Burrow and Ja'Marr Chase, who respectively will have career years.Cleveland BrownsWhen your choice is Deshaun Watson or Shedeur Sanders that means the Browns will finish last for the third straight season in the AFC North.Chicago BearsThe Bears will come back to earth in 2026. Consider them this year's version of the Washington Commanders. They are more likely to finish at .500 or below for the seventh time in eight years than to repeat last year's 11-win, NFC North championship.Dallas CowboysCeeDee Lamb will have his sixth straight 1,000-yard receiving season, and George Pickens will again join him by going over the 1,000-yard mark. They will top last year's combined 168 catches easily.Denver BroncosThe Broncos will not repeat last year's performance and win 14 games. They will be tested by the resurgent Kansas City Chiefs as they try and repeat as AFC West champs.Detroit LionsThe Lions will rebound from last year's 9-8 season and win the NFC North. Jahmyr Gibbs will crack the 2,000-yard mark, combining rushing and receiving.Green Bay PackersThe Packers will finish better than .500 for the eighth time in nine seasons. Josh Jacobs will come up short again as he seeks his fifth 1,000-yard season.Houston TexansFor the ninth time in nine seasons, a different running back will lead the Texans in rushing. Woody Marks did it last year with 703 yards as a rookie. This season, it will be David Montgomery, who will have a big year after coming over from the Detroit Lions.Indianapolis ColtsJonathan Taylor will have his fourth season of more than 1,400 rushing yards. Alex Pierce will struggle and won't reach 1,000 receiving yards and will average less than 20 per catch for the first time since 2023.Jacksonville JaguarsThe Jaguars will not repeat their 13-4 season from 2025 but they will not revert back to the 4-13 campaign of 2024.Kansas City ChiefsBuoyed by the addition of Kenneth Walker III in the backfield and a healthy Patrick Mahomes, the Kansas City Chiefs will return to the playoffs. Travis Kelce, however, will not lead the team in receiving for the eighth time in nine years. Time to share the wealth more often.Las Vegas RaidersTry as the will, the Raiders are not going to dig themselves out of last in the AFC West. The good news is they will be so bad early there will be little risk in going from Kirk Cousins to Fernando Mendoza at QB.Los Angeles ChargersAnother year, another season of the Justin Herbert hype not delivering a division title.Los Angeles RamsMatthew Stafford will not repeat as NFL MVP. As much of a favorite as LA is in preseason Super Bowl rankings, this will be a much tougher test to win it all than anyone suspects, with or without Aaron Donald.Miami DolphinsThe Dolphins will continue to have the longest drought in the league without a playoff win. The last one was in 2000 for those who are keeping track.Minnesota VikingsWith Kyler Murray at QB, Justin Jefferson will leadin Viking receivers for the seventh straight seaon, and he will have more than 100 catches and close to 1,500 yards.New England PatriotsThe Patriots will not win the AFC East again, they will finish ahead of the Dolphins and Jets.New Orleans Saints Tyler Shough will throw for 3,000 yards and 25 touchdowns. Chris Olave will catch more than 10 of those scoring passes.New York GiantsJohn Harbaugh's aura will not be enough to will the New York Giants to a playoff spot in his first season.New York JetsGeno Smith will lead the New York Jets to the first pick in the 2027 NFL draft much in the same way he led the Raiders to that spot in 2026.Philadelphia EaglesSaquon Barkley will have more than 1,500 rushing yards and 15 combined touchdowns.Pittsburgh SteelersMercifully, the Steelers will not make the playoffs in Aaron Rodgers' final season. The good news is DK Metcalf will have more than 1,000 receiving yards for the first time since 2023 in Seattle.San Francisco 49ersDeebo Samuel will have a monster year rushing and receiving in his return to the Niners.Seattle SeahawksWith Kenneth Walker III off to KC, and Zach Charbonnet recovering from knee surgery, the Seahawks are going to be hard-pressed to repeat last year's total of 2,096 rushing yards. The pair was good for 1,757 of those.Tampa Bay BuccaneersThe Buccaneers will miss Mike Evans and will not improve on last year's 8-9 mark. Tennesssee TitansTo the surprise of no one, Robert Saleh will not have any magic in Tennessee and this team is destined for a last-place finish.Washington CommandersJayden Daniels will remain healthy and will put up stats close to what he did as a rookie. This article originally appeared on The List Wire: Bold predictions for each of 32 NFL teams for 2026 season0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 22 Visualizações 0 Anterior -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMKnicks' OG Anunoby talks facing LeBron James, Sixers on opening nightThe Philadelphia 76ers and the New York Knicks will clash on Oct. 20 at Madison Square Garden to open the 2026-27 season in a highly anticipated matchup. The new-look Sixers led by LeBron James and Jaylen Brown will look to make a statement and spoil ring night for the champion Knicks. The Knicks swept the Sixers out of the playoffs in Round 2 back in May so it is a playoff rematch with Philadelphia, obviously, looking much different on the floor. One has to believe the Sixers will be the biggest challenger to New York's crown in the coming season due to the talent and experience the team possesses.Knicks forward OG Anunoby gave his thoughts on the matchup via Bleacher Report:"I mean, anytime you get to play against a player like LeBron, it's an honor, especially because he might retire pretty soon," Anunoby said of the highly anticipated season-opener. "So, it'll be pretty cool. And I mean, they're a great team with a lot of great players. They've added a lot of guys this summer. And they're very well coached, Nick Nurse. So I think it'll be a really fun opening night."Anunoby is a huge piece of the Knicks' core and somebody the Sixers will certainly have to account for in the near future. He is a solid player who knows his role and can do a number of different things out on the floor. Either way, the matchup between the Sixers and Knicks should be electric on opening night. This article originally appeared on Sixers Wire: Knicks' OG Anunoby talks facing LeBron James, Sixers on opening night0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 38 Visualizações 0 Anterior -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COM'It's like old times': Women's golf legends take aim at major in Ann ArborOn Tuesday at Barton Hills Country Club in Ann Arbor, the mood was light, not what you'd expect with a United States Golf Association championship right around the corner.Players said the vibe felt more like a reunion than the buildup to a major championship.Of course, they expect that to change come Thursday morning."I also enjoy seeing everyone, seeing everybody and catching up, seeing what's going on," Annika Sorenstam, the World Golf Hall-of-Famer, said Tuesday. "It's so fun, because you've got 120 players here and we're all just excited to play and compete at a different level than maybe before. But we all try, and we're out there with our caddies reading the greens and trying to get the yardage books."It's like old times, but it's not really old times. But it's kind of fun to be back and do it."This is certainly the biggest tournament that we have all year."We'll test our skills and go from there."Sorenstam, 55, who won 72 times on the LPGA, including 10 majors, is the headliner in the field at this week's U.S. Senior Women's Open at historic Barton Hills, which is hosting its third USGA championship. The other two were the 1998 U.S. Women's Amateur and the 2008 U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur. Four players in this week's field have competed in all three USGA championships at Barton Hills, including Michigan State women's golf coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll.Players from 44 states and 15 countries make up the field, including five members of the World Golf Hall of Fame: Sorenstam, Amy Alcott, Juli Inkster, Karrie Webb and Hollis Stacy. The tournament, which debuted in 2018, runs Thursday through Sunday."Obviously, there's probably not the intensity of what a U.S. Open felt like when I was playing the U.S. Women's Open. But coming to a venue like this, and the USGA does it right, it does have a U.S. Open feel to it," said Webb, 51, a 41-time winner on the LPGA with seven majors, including back-to-back U.S. Opens in 2000-01. She also won the last Oldsmobile Classic in East Lansing in 2000."I think in some respects you go back into the old patterns of what you used to do, which feels familiar, like getting back on the horse. I guess probably not much has changed."England's Becky Morgan, 51, is the defending champion, having won by six shots over runner-up Inkster in 2025. Inkster continues to play and play well at 66, having tied for 12th at the LPGA's Dow Championship in Midland in June. The U.S. Senior Women's Open may not have quite the intensity of the quote-unquote regular majors of yesteryear, but there's still plenty at stake, including a $180,000 prize for first place. The champion also receives a spot in the field for the 2027 U.S. Women's Open at Inverness Club in Toledo, and an exemption into the next 10 playings of the U.S. Senior Women's Open. The men's U.S. Senior Open first was played in 1980. It took 38 years for the USGA to launch the U.S. Senior Women's Open. The idea was a hit, especially with Sorenstam, who retired from tournament golf in 2008 but came back to play the 2021 U.S. Senior Women's Open and has finished top-10 every year since, including top-five three times."I think it's been a motivator for me and for many of the other women. linkAPNEWS.COMIn Meta’s trial, families of social media victims see a pivotal moment for online safetyParents hold pictures of their deceased children during a protest against social media platforms outside the Ronald V. Dellums Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse on Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2026, in Oakland, Calif. (AP Photo/Noah Berger)2026-08-18T23:20:55Z As opening statements kicked off Tuesday in a trial for Meta Platforms, advocates and parents of social media victims gathered outside the federal courthouse in Oakland, California, with a banner that stretched several feet across.Written on it in black ink were the names of children and young adults who have died from social media related harms, including deaths by suicide after bouts of cyberbullying or sextortion. Giovanni, an 11-year-old, Bubba, a 13-year-old, and Englyn, a 14-year-old, were among the nearly 600 names. Parents said the names were “just the tip of the iceberg.”“Behind us, justice is going to be served,″ said Lennon Torres, an advocate with the organization Heat Initiative. “The courtroom doors are open, and it is time that the public see what the executives at Meta have known all along: that their products are designed to addict and to harm children.″ Many of the gathered parents have attended previous trials, congressional hearings and other events related to online child safety. But they say this trial, in which the attorneys general from four states are seeking billions of dollars in damages for social media harms to children, marks a significant moment. They see it as the culmination of years of work and public pressure on social media firms to do more to protect kids online. Social media companies are increasingly facing lawsuits over harms to young users, and Meta already has lost two pivotal cases over harms to children and teens this year, both of which it is appealing. The trial represents a “groundswell of public perception changing against these companies,” said Amy Neville, whose 14-year-old son Alexander Neville died from fentanyl poisoning after being deceived by a drug dealer operating on Snapchat. Neville, like many other parents who have lost their children in similar ways, has dedicated her life to educating and spreading awareness of the dangers of social media. “If we can keep holding them accountable over and over, something has to give, and I don’t want us to stop doing this until they’ve made their products safe by design,” she said. Read More Lawsuit focuses on broad claimsThis lawsuit is not focused on any individual person, case or specific harm tied to social media, but rather broader claims that Meta made decisions in designing Instagram and Facebook that put young users at risk. The states also claim Meta knew the platforms to be dangerous and lied about how dangerous they were. Meta has rejected the allegations and said the trial will show the work it has done to make its platforms safer. The trial’s outcome could have significant consequences for Meta’s bottom line and how its platforms are designed and operated. But many parents are eager for evidence from the trial, namely internal Meta documents, to be brought to light. John DeMay, whose son Jordan died by suicide at age 17 after being subject to a sextortion scheme on Instagram, is one of those parents who will be closely watching the trial and the evidence that emerges. “As this information starts to unfold and unfold and unfold, the American people, the American mothers and the American fathers who are not seeing this stuff every day can see it and go, ‘Oh my God, this is really what’s happening,’ ” he said. Some of the parents present outside of the courtroom were residents of the four states that are the plaintiffs in this trial — California, Colorado, Kentucky and New Jersey — and they thanked their attorneys general for the work on the case.Lori Schott of Colorado said Attorney General Phil Weiser has viewed the content that populated her daughter Annalee’s social media feeds and read her journals after her death by suicide. Annalee, who was 18 when she died, wrote in her journals about feeling ugly and comparing herself to other girls’ social media profiles. Parents call for accountabilityIn a message to Meta, its CEO Mark Zuckerberg and the head of Instagram Adam Mosseri, Schott said outside of court that they have built one of the most powerful companies in the world, “but power does not excuse harm.” “Profits does not erase the responsibility of Big Tech and no company — no matter how wealthy, no matter how influential, no matter how untouchable it feels it is — should get to stand above the truth, the law and our children,” Schott continued. Many parent advocates seemed to carry optimism with them on Tuesday. Erin Popolo, whose daughter Emily Murillo died by suicide after being subject to intense cyberbullying, was hopeful the trial’s outcome could lead to meaningful change on social media. “I think that we’re going to make history here,” she said.___Associated Press journalist Terry Chea contributed to this report. linkAPNEWS.COMCrews work to restore power to thousands after Lala raked HawaiiDebris is seen along Hawaiʻi Belt Road near Pahala, Hawaii, Sunday, Aug. 16, 2026, after a severe weather system went through the area. (Stephen Lam/San Francisco Chronicle via AP)2026-08-18T23:17:31Z Crews were working to restore power to thousands of Hawaii residents Tuesday after the outer bands of Lala battered the archipelago over the weekend, causing destructive flooding and killing one person, before weakening from a hurricane to a tropical storm.Crews on the Big Island were working to clear and restore roads. Most public schools across Hawaii reopened but Hawaii County’s non-emergency operations were still suspended, officials said. The storm has since moved west, according to the National Weather Service, and is expected to eventually turn north toward Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument, a massive and remote federally protected area of the Pacific with islands, atolls, sea mounts, shoals and coral reefs.Hawaiian Electric said inspections are showing significant damage, especially in remote areas, and crews were working overnight to restore power to thousands across the Big Island, Maui, and Oahu. Many large trees in Maui’s upcountry region fell and toppled power lines and damaged infrastructure, according to Maui County officials. “Roads are getting cleared, debris is getting cleaned up, and the people, while hurting, remain strong,” Hawaii County Mayor Kimo Alameda said Monday.Officials said the storm caused one death — a 90-year-old woman who had been reported missing in Naalehu and then found dead on Monday. In the hard-hit southern end of the Big Island, communities were isolated as they were cut off from communication. Floodwaters disturbed some grave sites. While water service was restored to customers in Pāhala, a boil water notice was issued out of an abundance of caution.Hawaii Gov. Josh Green said Monday that the damage was not as catastrophic as feared and that recovery will be “somewhat brisk.”___Kelety reported from Phoenix. 获取更多RSS:https://feedx.net https://feedx.site0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 58 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMSantiago Sandoval, a Difference-Maker for ChivasSantiago Sandoval, a Difference-Maker for ChivasSantiago Sandoval could not have asked for a better return to Chivas’ first-team setup. After an impressive run with the Mexico U-20 National Team at the CONCACAF U-20 Championship, the Rojiblanco academy product returned to the squad with the same confidence, talent and ability to make a difference that have made him one of Guadalajara’s most promising young players. Most importantly, his return has gone beyond simply making a good impression. In his last 2 appearances, Sandoval has directly contributed to Chivas’ victories, proving that he is a player capable of changing the course of a match even when coming off the bench. His return came in the final match of the Leagues Cup against Seattle Sounders. He came on as a substitute and, with only a few minutes on the pitch, found himself inside the box to connect with a header and score the goal that ultimately proved decisive in Chivas’ victory. But if that performance was the first glimpse of his impact after returning from the U-20 Championship, what happened against Santos Laguna confirmed that it was no coincidence. In Matchweek 4 of the Apertura 2026, Sandoval came on in the 53rd minute and once again needed very little time to become a key figure. He was active throughout his time on the pitch and created dangerous situations, eventually winning the penalty that led to the goal with which Guadalajara defeated Los Guerreros 0-1.2 matches, 2 wins and 2 different ways of making an impact. Against Seattle, with a goal. Against Santos, through his movement, his reading of the game and an individual play that ultimately led to the decisive penalty. That ability to influence games in different ways is precisely one of the qualities that make Santiago such a special player. The left-footed attacking midfielder has the quality to play between the lines, the agility to receive and turn, the technical ability to combine with teammates and the flair to beat defenders, but he also possesses a quality that is becoming increasingly important: he knows when to make his presence felt inside the box.The Clausura 2026 Liguilla had already provided a clear example of this. Against Tigres, he scored a brace that proved vital in helping Chivas secure their place in the Semifinals, and he later found the back of the net again against Cruz Azul in the first leg of that round. Now, following his involvement with the Mexico U-20 National Team and with just 2 matches since his return, Sandoval is once again showing that his development is being accompanied by an increasingly greater ability to make an impact. And that is especially good news for Guadalajara. The Rojiblanco academy continues to deliver, and Santiago is one of the clearest examples. His emergence not only reflects the individual qualities of a player who continues to develop, but also the possibility of having homegrown talent capable of taking on responsibility and stepping up in important moments. Moreover, his recent impact sends a clear message: he does not need to play a large number of minutes to influence a match. He did it against Seattle. He did it again against Santos. In both cases, his contribution proved important in helping Chivas secure the win.So, rather than simply talking about Santiago Sandoval’s strong return following the U-20 Championship, it is time to talk about a player who is making the most of every opportunity, growing in confidence and beginning to establish himself as someone capable of changing the course of a match.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 53 Visualizações 0 Anterior -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMDave Roberts Gives Initial Diagnosis of Edwin Diaz After IL PlacementLos Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts addressed closer Edwin Diaz going on the injured list following a run of bad performances. Through Edwin Diaz’s struggles, Roberts has stood by his closer and kept giving him chances, including a fiery defense. View this post on InstagramA post shared by Dodgers Nation (@dodgersnation)However, after allowing four hits and three runs on Monday against the Rockies, things reached a tipping point for the Dodgers, and they have placed Diaz on the injured list. The official diagnosis is neck inflammation, though according to Roberts, Diaz will get a full scan when he gets to Los Angeles about how serious the problem is. Aug 8, 2026; Phoenix, Arizona, USA; Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Edwin Diaz (3) throws against the Arizona Diamondbacks in the ninth inning at Chase Field. Mandatory Credit: Anna Carrington-Imagn ImagesRoberts is confident that Diaz will be back this year, but until the team knows more, he refrained from making any strong statements about the closer’s prognosis. Diaz felt the injury last night, according to Roberts, but it is unclear if the neck problem had been going on before then. Dr. Robert Watkins will perform the imaging and examination. “We’ll know more after seeing Dr. Watkins, but given where he’s at, I don’t see a situation where he’d be out for the year,” Roberts explained. With only a little less than a month and a half left in the season, Diaz will need to hope it is truly a minor injury. How bad was Edwin Diaz before landing on the IL?Diaz was awful since coming back from elbow surgery in late July, posting a 15.88 ERA in the month of August. He had three blown saves, along with two poor outings in non-save situations. His command was off for the most part, and more importantly, his pitches were not moving or spinning enough to miss bats or the barrel. Aug 16, 2026; Los Angeles, California, USA; Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Edwin Diaz (3) during pregame warmup before a game against the Milwaukee Brewers at Dodger Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Jon Endow-Imagn ImagesAt times, he would locate pitches ridiculously well, painting the edges of the strike zone, but even those pitches were getting punished by hitters. Diaz said he figured out what was causing the dip in performance, citing his posture in his delivery. Ideally, at the very least, Diaz gets the chance to take his time and correct mechanical problems. Any neck issues could help explain his delivery struggles, but it will ultimately come down to his ability to tighten things up.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 79 Visualizações 0 Anterior -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMColorado Rockies vs. Los Angeles Dodgers game discussion: Eric Lauer vs. Ryan FeltnerPHOENIX, AZ - AUGUST 12: Ryan Feltner #18 of the Colorado Rockies pitches during the game between the Colorado Rockies and the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field on Wednesday, August 12, 2026 in Phoenix, Arizona. (Photo by Zach Gardner/MLB Photos via Getty Images) | MLB Photos via Getty Images It’s usually not a great time when the Los Angeles Dodgers come to Coors Field, and Monday night was no different as the Dodgers powered their way to an 11-5 victory. Still, the Rockies will look to shake off the loss and try to get something going in the second game of the series to even things up. Ryan Feltner (5-6, 5.59 ERA) will take the hill for the Rockies for his 19th start of the year. August has been a better month for Feltner this season as he has worked at least five innings in his three starts and mitigated damage for the most part. In his last outing in Arizona, he allowed just two runs on seven hits over five innings of work and enjoyed plenty of run support. He still hasn’t been as crisp over the last month, allowing three or more walks in four of his last five outings. He has also given up a lot of hits, particularly the home run ball, something that is always a worry against the Dodgers. Feltner faced the Dodgers one other time this season, when he allowed just two earned runs on five hits over 5.2 innings at Coors Field. The Rockies would certainly take another start like that. Meanwhile, Eric Lauer (7-6, 4.67 ERA) continues to be a new man since joining the Dodgers this season. Over 11 appearances since leaving the Toronto Blue Jays, where he had a 6.69 ERA, Lauer has gone 6-1 with a 3.48 ERA over 61 innings. He isn’t always lights out, but he can regularly go six innings and allow three runs or less on a fairly economical pitch count. He last faced the Rockies in Los Angeles at the start of July, allowing three runs on six hits over six innings of work. Lauer is a crafty lefty, something the Rockies have struggled with all season, so they will have to exercise better judgment against him. They have been drawing more walks lately, something that will need to continue, and avoiding strikeouts. Lauer’s last outing came against the Kansas City Royals, in which he allowed just two runs on four hits over 6.1 innings of work with six strikeouts. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMCadillac F1’s Ownership Future in Doubt Amid Mark Walter ScandalThe future of Cadillac F1’s ownership has come into question after one of its owners reportedly secured a major sale. Mark Walter, CEO and co-chairman of TWG Global, which owns a majority stake in the Cadillac F1 team, recently sold the Los Angeles Lakers for $12.5 billion just a year and a half after buying the legendary basketball franchise. Walter has been the subject of a massive investigation by the US government and the Securities and Exchange Commission regarding alleged undisclosed loans between multiple of his companies. Naturally, after selling the Lakers so quickly after buying them, with an investigation pending, questions arose about his need to raise money and whether it may be affecting his ability to own sports franchises. Cadillac Team Logo | Photo Credit: Cadillac F1 TeamTalk around Walter has risen after it was widely reported that he may be selling his stake in Chelsea Football Club. Bloomberg has reported that Walter is selling off his stakes to raise money to pay the troublesome loans and avoid further investigation from the American government. Naturally, his ownership stake in Cadillac becomes another possible part of his portfolio to sell. How is Cadillac F1 impacted by Mark Walter’s financial issuesThe loans he is under investigation for total multiple billions in alleged fraud, so selling off more of his ownership is not out of the question. According to the Financial Times, TWG is seeking to refinance loans, restructure companies, and bring in outside investors, all signs of financial uncertainty regarding their financial health. Mar 26, 2026; Los Angeles, California, USA; Los Angeles Dodgers owner and chairman Mark Walter walks on the field after the game against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Dodger Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Kirby Lee-Imagn ImagesAny changes in ownership could have major ramifications for the Cadillac F1 team, which was put together on the fly over a few years. They are just starting to get their legs under them and make progress from race to race, closing the gap on the established teams. However, General Motors is another big piece of their ownership pie, and as long as they are involved, there is less risk of things changing wildly for a team that is still growing and developing. Cadillac has already faced one big change this season, with the sacking of former team principal Graeme Lowdon, and at this point, they could benefit from stability.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 17 Visualizações 0 Anterior -

linkAPNEWS.COMEx-Fauci adviser pleads guilty to plotting to conceal COVID-19 research records during pandemicDr. Anthony Fauci is sworn in before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee at the Capitol, Wednesday, July 29, 2026, in Washington. (AP Photo/Allison Robbert)2026-08-19T00:02:10Z GREENBELT, Md. (AP) — A former senior adviser to infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci pleaded guilty Tuesday to plotting to conceal federal records related to research on the origins of the deadly COVID-19 pandemic.Dr. David Morens is scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 12 by U.S. District Judge Paula Xinis in Greenbelt, Maryland. Morens pleaded guilty to conspiring to defraud the U.S. government, a felony punishable by a maximum prison sentence of five years.“By pleading guilty today, Dr. Morens has taken responsibility for what he did, and he will continue to do so,” defense attorney Tim Belevetz said in a statement after the plea hearing.Morens is accused of using his private email account to intentionally circumvent public records laws while employed at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. The Justice Department alleges that he concealed or destroyed records of discussions related to COVID-19 research grants, including an effort to revive a controversial coronavirus grant. The indictment follows a probe by House Republicans into the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic that scrutinized Morens’ email communications and accused him of intentionally concealing records. In congressional testimony, Morens denied attempting to evade federal transparency laws by using his personal email. In July, Fauci repeatedly invoked the Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination during a congressional hearing on his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. Last Friday, Fauci declined a request to appear voluntarily before a second Senate panel after majority Republicans on the Homeland Security Committee voted along partisan lines to hold him in contempt of Congress. Fauci wasn’t charged in the case against Morens, 78, of Chester, Maryland.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 66 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMRookie DB Mansoor Delane impresses in practice at Chiefs training campThe Kansas City Chiefs made a huge investment in rookie defensive back Mansoor Delane back in April — trading up to the No. 6 pick in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft to select the former LSU Tigers standout. While Delane is expected to play a key role in Kansas City's defense this season, his full participation in practices at Chiefs training camp was delayed due to a shoulder injury that kept him from taking part in full-contact drills. On Monday, August 17, Delane took his first unrestricted repetitions at Kansas City's workouts and made a great first impression on fans and members of the media who were in attendance at Missouri Western State University.Take a look at these videos of Delane dominating in practice, which were posted to Twitter by various accounts:Mansoor Delane's 1-on-1s vs. Cyrus Allen, Rashee Rice, Nikko RemigioQuick look at Mansoor Delane's 1-on-1 reps vs:♦️ Cyrus Allen♦️ Rashee Rice♦️ Nikko Remigio#Chiefs#ChiefsKingdom@KSHB41pic.twitter.com/xPEfAQEeYM— Matt Foster (@MattFosterTV) August 17, 2026Mansoor Delane takes on Cyrus Allen in practice Chiefs’ Cyrus Allen vs. Mansoor Delane pic.twitter.com/NG45iJ44Z6— Jesse Newell (@jessenewell) August 17, 2026Mansoor Delane breaks up deep pass to Tyquan ThorntonBefore Thornton went up the hill, we saw a good matchup between him and CB Mansoor Delane.#Chiefs l #ChiefsKingdompic.twitter.com/8UU0BANaI4— Sports Radio 810 WHB (@SportsRadio810) August 18, 2026Mansoor Delane disrupts connection between Patrick Mahomes, Rashee RiceHere we go 5 🗣️ @mansoordelanepic.twitter.com/DvsPpievzm— Kansas City Chiefs (@Chiefs) August 18, 2026This article originally appeared on Chiefs Wire: Rookie DB Mansoor Delane impresses in practice at Chiefs training camp0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 44 Visualizações 0 Anterior -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMPaul Finebaum’s Indiana ranking take adds fuel to Hoosiers’ title defenseThe college football season is quickly approaching, and soon a new quest for the College Football Playoffs will begin. The defending champions, the Indiana Hoosiers, will look to defend their incredible title run.Head coach Curt Cignetti’s run with Indiana was one for the ages. However, a familiar face is already casting doubt on their title defense.Paul Finebaum was on SportsCenter, and when the topic of Indiana’s ranking came up, he didn’t hold back. In fact, he painted the whole picture as clearly as it can be.MORE: Clemson and 3 other unranked CFB teams that could finish in the top-10“That’s where they were picked last year in the Big 10 … So, they are moving on up after a perfect season. They’re exactly where they should be for this reason. Everybody in front of them has a starting quarterback. And if Indiana had its starting quarterback, number one,” Finebaum said.Dec 7, 2024; Atlanta, GA, USA; ESPN announcer Paul Finebaum before the 2024 SEC Championship game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Ohio State, they saw them last year in the Big 10 Championship game. They’re at Michigan. USC arrives. I know what the analytics say, but that is a far more difficult schedule. And the reason why they’re number six instead of number one.”Indiana disrespect (Again)?Finebaum’s argument makes sense on the surface, particularly with Indiana facing a more difficult schedule. However, there is also a strong case that the Hoosiers are being overlooked once again.MORE: 7 college football teams with the longest AP Top 25 poll droughtsIndiana enters the season with a roster that could be even stronger than the one that went undefeated last year. Cignetti also returns a coaching staff that has already proven it can develop players, navigate a difficult Big Ten schedule, and consistently put the team in position to win.Jul 30, 2026; Chicago, IL, USA; Indiana Football head coach Curt Cignetti speaks during Big Ten Media Days at Hilton Chicago. Mandatory Credit: Kamil Krzaczynski-Imagn Images Credit: IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect (Reuters)The biggest question surrounding the Hoosiers may be at quarterback, but that alone should not erase what they accomplished last season or the talent returning to Bloomington.Ohio State, Michigan, and USC will provide significant tests, but Indiana has already shown it can compete with the best teams in the country. The Hoosiers also have something many other contenders lack: a coaching staff that knows exactly what it takes to win at the highest level.— Enjoy free coverage of the top news & trending stories with The Big Lead Newsletter —0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 42 Visualizações 0 Anterior
