8 gay films coming in 2026, we can't wait to see
As the year draws to a close, its a time for reflection and for looking ahead. One thing we can definitely get excited about coming in 2026 is the incredible lineup of gay films headed our way. From steamy romances to zombie apocalypses, and true stories inspired by personal triumphs and tragedies, our stories are taking over the silver screen and we absolutely love to see it. Here are the movies (so far) that were most excited to watch.PillionRight at the very (power) top of our most anticipated list is the BDSM love story Pillion. The film stars Harry Melling as Colin, a reserved and submissive gay man who catches the attention of Ray, a gorgeous and dominant biker played by Alexander Skarsgrd. Together, they embark on an erotic and romantic partnership full of power dynamics and passion.Where to watch: In theaters in February.Masters of the UniverseSee on InstagramListen, you may argue this isnt gay. But trust usanything He-Man related is gay. Add to that Nicholaas Galitzine in his full twunk transformation as Prince Adam, and theres no argument to be had. Ok? Ok. The film follows a young Prince Adam who has crash-landed on Earth, only to be called back to Eternia decades later to defeat the forces of Skeletor.Where to watch: In theaters June 5, 2026.This is Not a TestZombies, the 90s, and Luke Macfarlane? Yes, please. This filmbased on the book by Courtney Summersfollows a group of classmates who take cover in their high school when their town is overtaken by the undead. For those who havent read the source material, there is a queer character at the heart of the story, and the cast has us fully swooning. Olivia Holt and Froy Gutierrez star alongside Macfarlane.Where to watch: In theaters in 2026.JimpaThis years heartwarming tearjerker is Jim. The film follows Hannah (Olivia Colman) who, along with her nonbinary teenager Frances (played by nonbinary actor Aud Mason-Hyde), travels to Amsterdam to spend a year with their gay grandfather, Jimpa (John Lithgow). Intergenerational queerness and family drama? Oh yeahthis ones going to make us weepy.Where to watch: A release date has yet to be announced.Heartstopper: ForeverGet ready Heartstopper is coming to an end in 2026, and its going out with this film, which will presumably wrap things up. The central storyline follows Nick and Charlie as they navigate the challenges of long-distance romance when Nick leaves for university.Where to watch: Coming to Netflix in 2026.The Light FantasticThis true story may just make our hearts dance this year. This heartwarming and life-affirming tale is inspired by the story of Jason (Jeremy Irvine), a firefighter with dreams of becoming a ballroom dancer. Rupert Everett will star as his dance instructor, and Nathan Stewart-Jarrett and Layton Williams round out the cast.Where to watch: A release date has yet to be announced.Burning Rainbow FarmAnother film based on a true story, Burning Rainbow Farm follows a gay couple, Rollie Roh (Leo Woodall) and Tom Crosslin (Sebastian Stan), who are marijuana advocates facing off against the FBI to protect both their farm and their family. As anyone who followed this story knows, this one is going to be a rough but powerful watch.Where to watch: A release date has yet to be announced.Cry to HeavenTom Ford blew queer audiences away with A Single Man, and at long last hes back in the directors chair with another film we suspect will become a modern gay classic. Ford is helming a project based on Anne Rices very gay, very melodramatic, and very erotic Cry to Heaven. Set in the world of 18th-century Italian opera, the film follows two young mena castrato and a noble last sonwho together plot revenge. As if that werent enough to fuel our anticipation, the cast is a total gay dream. The film will feature Nicholas Hoult, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Adele, Mark Strong, Hunter Schafer, Lux Pascal, and more.Where to watch: In theaters late fall 2026

Adult star Dominic Ford is bringing the hottest models together for Collab Week in Puerto Vallarta
2025 is ending with a bang!Iconic adult film star Dominic Ford is recruiting some of the top models from around the world to join him for a week-long of exciting activations and endless collaboration opportunities in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. The JustFor.Fans creator is officially launching Collab Week PV, which kicks off Tuesday, December 2, and lasts until Monday, December 8. Throughout the weeklong convention, creators will be able to explore Puerto Vallarta, film at the hottest locations, and enjoy nightly epic parties.Fans even have the opportunity to meet many of their favorite adult stars at several of the events taking place throughout Zona Romntica. With over 200 models slated to attend Collab Week PV, this is the content creation trip you don't want to miss.Check out PRIDE's exclusive interview with Dominic Ford below and learn more about Collab Week PV on the official website here. See on Instagram Congratulations on Collab Week PV! How excited are you to kick off this content creator convention?Thank you! I am so excited. I just keep thinking about how many content creators we are going to have down in Puerto Vallarta. Many are experiencing this incredible town for the first time! The atmosphere in PV is perfect for models to have fun, work, but also let their hair down, have a good time, and meet a bunch of new people. For anyone who's unfamiliar, how long have you been in the adult entertainment industry?I have been in the industry for almost 18 years! In 2008, I started my adult film company, DominicFord.com, in 2008. We filmed everything in 3D (before there were 3D TVs) and our first feature film was Whorrey Potter and the Sorcerers Balls, starring Matthew Rush as Voldemorecock. We had a reality show for five years called So You Think You Can F*** (think Survivor meets gay porn), and I started JustFor.Fans in 2018.What inspired you to launch this convention? For the last seven years, we have produced an annual JustFor.Fans Anniversary Conference & Party, and we sponsor more than 200 events per year around the world. A few years ago, we decided we were finally big enough to launch our own series of events. Our anniversary party had 450 models attend last year, and we know there are models around the world clamoring for similar events closer to home for them. Collab Week will become a series of events in various locations, starting in PV. But there are more coming in other locations.I've heard that many creators from around the world are attending. How many models do you anticipate will join the festivities and how many countries do you have represented? We are expecting around 200 models to come. For our first time out, we think thats a great showing! One of the reasons we wanted to host it in PV was because there are SO many Latin American models who cant get to the USA for things like this. So by having an event in PV, we are able to provide all of those models with an experience they have never had before on a scale like this, including providing a forum where models of different countries can meet and work with each other. What activations will the creators be able to participate in?So many! We have organized a private trip with Jets Naked Tours exclusively for models to film and have fun with the amazing backdrop of the ocean, mountains, etc We have rented out the local bathhouse (Spartacus) for exclusive use of the models to film in. Mantamar, everyones favorite beach club, has reserved their entire VIP area just for us, and models can hang out there every day when they arent filming. The Mantamar parties are sponsored by Ru5h.com and MISTR, two brands we have been very happy to bring on board as sponsors. We are going to do a live filming at Studs that people can watch, and we will have two HUGE events at Industry (including an Underwear party they are doing just for us), that will feature a private playroom for filming, exclusively for models. Finally, were hosting a naked party at Jets new nightclub. Its going to be so much fun.I also understand that fans will have opportunities to meet their favorite stars throughout the week. How can fans get involved? There are many events that fans can buy tickets to and attend. The live filming at Studs, the two parties at Industry, and all weekend at Mantamar. We are even opening up the play area one night at Industry to the public. They can purchase tickets at CollabWeekPV.com.Many people have heard of Collab Week before, as the well-known adult performer, Austin Wolf, launched his own trip in PV back in 2023. Why did you want to use a similar name and format for your convention?"Collab Week," "Collab Houses," and similar phrases have been around forever, certainly before Austin used the term. Its a great description, and everyone knows exactly what it is. I thought about coming up with a new name, but any other name would have just obviously been us trying to avoid using the word "collab," which is too ubiquitous to ignore at this point. Our Collab Week will be very different. First off, we have around 200 models coming, so the scale is something PV has never seen before. We have tie-ins with so many venues and local stores. This is really a community effort, and the idea for the week was really a collaboration between most of the sponsors. We also have such an open, friendly, sexy, welcoming vibe, and there will be no mistaking what we are doing with anything that came before us.Are you planning on bringing this convention to other cities or making this an annual opportunity in PV?Yes, Puerto Vallarta is just the beginning. I spent the day starting to plan Collab Week Fire Island, which will be based at Reflections (a very famous house in the Pines) this August, and more cities will follow in the coming years. We have been asked for years if we would bring our JFF Conference to other countries. So we might do that, or bring these Collab Weeks all over (which are more party-focused than educational). Either way, look out for JustFor.Fans and Collab Week to be doing even more to support our models all over the world. We are the only gay-owned fan site, and we heavily invest in our community, with these events being just one part of how we give back to the community. What are you manifesting for your career next?I have spent my life creating safe spaces for our community. Lately, I have been branching out into real estate to do that even more. I am about to open up a gay club in Zipolite, Mexico, called TEMPLE, and I'm also renovating a large event space on Fire Island. So, I am bringing all the values in my life that have manifested online all these years to the real world. I am super excited about that! Also, we are in the middle of updating JustFor.Fans and adding some new features that will make our models make even more money than they are making now. We are going to have a major announcement about a partnership with a very iconic brand that I hope to announce early next year. So, lots of great things are percolating!

One thing 2025 gave us was a lot of really incredible queer films and even a few new lesbian faves. And from the looks of 2026, we have just as much to look forward to. So, as this year comes to a close, we thought it would be the perfect time to look ahead at the sapphic movies that are about to entertain, titillate, and move us in 2026.Keep an eye here for more, as well be updating this list all year long!SoulM8ateIf you think a spin-off of the M3GAN series isnt your jam, stay tuned. This erotic sci-fi thriller comes from lesbian director Kate Dolan and if her previous film, You Are Not My Mother is anything to go by, its about to be way cooler and more subversive than either of the previous entries in the franchise, by a mile. This film follows a grieving man who acquires an AI love-bot to help distract him from his loneliness, but his desire to create a sentient partner accidentally turns her into a deadly soulmate. Honestly, it could be camp, it could be moving and thought-provoking either way, we are seated.Where to watch: In theaters January 9Scream 7Just like Ghostface, the Scream series keeps rising from the dead! In the latest chapter, the film refocuses on its original final girl, Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), who has once again managed to rebuild her life. But of course, a new Ghostface emerges to threaten both her and her teenage daughter. Most importantly, Jasmin Savoy Brown will return to reprise her role as lesbian horror-movie expert Mindy Meeks-Martin.Where to watch: In theaters February 27, 2026Practical Magic 2See on InstagramPractical Magic isnt queer textually, but it was a sapphic awakening for a generation of lezzies, so were absolutely counting its sequel. Both Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock return to reprise their roles as the Owens sisters, as will Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing as their witchy aunts. Joining the cast for this new installment are Lee Pace, Maisie Williams, and Joey King.Where to watch: in theaters on September 18, 2026.The Little Sister (La petite dernire)There can never be too many stories about queer awakenings, and The Little Sister, directed by Hafsia Herzi, offers a fresh new take on this tale. Based on Fatima Daass novel The Last One, the film follows 17-year-old Fatima (Nadia Melliti) as she embarks on a journey of queer self-discovery while trying to balance the hopes and expectations of her French-Algerian Muslim family.Where to watch: The Litter Sister is set to be released in Spring 2026.Teenage Sex and Death at Camp MiasmaThe second this film was announced, it danced all the way to the tippy-top of our most anticipated sapphic films list. Not only is it the latest from I Saw the TV Glow writer-director Jane Schoenbrun which already guaranteed our viewing but the casting is the definition of a lesbian dream come true.Hannah Einbinder and Gillian Anderson have signed on for the film, which centers on a director (Einbinder) who becomes fixated on casting a reclusive former final girl (Anderson) in her new film. When the two connect, they descend into a psychosexual mania. SAY LESS.Where to watch: Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma is slated for a theatrical release later this year.Mother MaryRight at the very top of our most anticipated lesbian films, this year is A24's upcoming "epic melodrama" Mother Mary from director David Lowery. The film follows the relationship between a fictional musician and a famous fashion designer played by Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel. Obviously, we are living for these two playing lovers, plus it co-stars another fave, Hunter Schafer!Where to watch: Mother Mary will release in theaters later this year. The HousekeeperSpeaking of celebs we can't wait to see heat up the big screen as sapphic lovers, Uma Thurman and Phoebe Dynevor will star in the period piece The Housekeeper. The film follows Danni (Thurman), a housekeeper at a manor home owned by the wealthy widow, Lady DeWithers. Danni finds herself caught up in a romance with novelist Daphne Du Maurier (Dynevor) when the authoress comes to the house as a guest.Where to watch: The Housekeeper will release in theaters late this year.Love Me TenderThis French drama, based on Constance Debrs autobiographical novel, follows the heart-wrenching story of Clmence (Vicky Krieps), who, after coming out as a lesbian, finds herself embroiled in a custody battle with her former husband over their son Paul. We're going to need to break out all the tissues for this one.Where to watch: Love Me Tender premiered at Cannes in 2025, and the US release date has yet to be announced.Forbidden FruitsWere you in the market for a new obsession? Congrats its here. This film which stars Lili Reinhart, Lola Tung, Victoria Pedretti, Alexandra Shipp, Emma Chamberlain, and Gabrielle Union (swoon) follows a young woman named Apple, who runs an after-hours witchy femme cult in the basement of a mall alongside Cherry and Fig. But when a new hire named Pumpkin (of course) disrupts their vibe by questioning their performative sisterhood, things take a sinister (and hopefully girl-kissing) turn.Where to watch: In theaters in 2026.Heartstopper: ForeverBrace yourself Heartstopper is coming to an end in 2026, and its going out with this film, which will presumably wrap things up. The central storyline follows Nick and Charlie as they navigate the challenges of long-distance romance when Nick leaves for university. Both Darcy (Kizzy Edgell) and Tara (Corinna Brown) are listed among the cast, so their stories will continue in the film, too.Where to watch: Coming to Netflix in 2026.

Cuffing season is here, but do LGBTQ+ folks actually participate? Experts weigh in
Its getting colder every day, pumpkin spice lattes are everywhere, and every lesbian you know is wearing a flannel shirt and a beanie, which also means that cuffing season has officially begun. This is the time of year when single people look for short-term relationships so that they have someone to cozy up with during the cold autumn and winter months and have a date to all of those holiday parties and family get-togethers.Could you meet your true love this way? Sure. But sometimes you just pick someone you like and are attracted to so you can hunker down together, regardless of whether youre viable long-term partners. But is this annual trend more common for LGBTQ+ people, and do we experience it differently than our straight counterparts? To find out, we talked to LGBTQ+ dating and relationship experts Kai Korpak, a sex therapist and the assistant director at Best Therapies; Jermelle Simon, an LGBTQ+ content creator, actor, and certified personal trainer; and Sofie Roos, a bisexual licensed sexologist, relationship therapist, and author at relationship magazine Passionerad. What is cuffing season? The term cuffing season originated in the early 2010s and gained popularity on social media as a shortened slang version of the word "handcuff." Cuffing season refers to the darker time of year, fall through winter, when people will seek out romantic or sexual partners during the colder months, Korpak tells PRIDE. The term comes from the slang term cuff, meaning to lock down and connect yourself to someone.Simon agrees and says that its really about finding someone to ride out those cold months with. "I think cuffing season simply means, it's too cold to be out in the streets, and I want a warm body to lie with, he says.Is cuffing season something that LGBTQ+ folks participate in, or is it mostly a straight phenomenon?Conversations around cuffing season on social media usually center around heterosexual people, but according to Korpak, The desire for warmth, intimacy, and consistency during colder, darker months isnt limited to straight folks, and queer people also experience the same seasonal pull toward connection that straight folks do.Roos says that not all queer people feel the same pull to be coupled up as straight people do, but they still crave companionship. LGBTQ+ people tend to feel a bigger need for emotional and physical closeness when everything slows down, when the days get shorter, and its cold at night, she explains.Do LGBTQ+ people do cuffing season differently? The holiday season is always tough, but it can be especially hard for queer people who arent accepted by their families. Cuffing season overlaps with many family-related winter holidays, which can often be a hard time for queer individuals who may feel the isolation associated with these holidays, where such a focus on family and couples, Korpak says. This may mean LGBTQ+ individuals leaning into the idea of chosen family and chosen connections rather than those from their family of origin.Roos also explains that cuffing season can look different for queer people who dont feel the need to have exclusive connections and are more open to the possibility of multiple partners. While straight people tend to find one partner whom they stay with during the whole cuffing season, queer folks are more inclined to have more than one person they partner up with, which makes the cuffing season more flexible and open for adaptation based on what you want, Roos says. And one big upside with this is that youre at lesser risk of ending up in a situationship or where someone falls in love with the other, because you dont spend that much time and energy into one person, but spread it out!Whats the best way to find someone during cuffing season?Simon says that if you want to draw people to you during cuffing season, make sure youre acting like the kind of person who is open to dating and connections. "And give yourself the same love you want to give out, he recommends. Im not saying to not be intentional about finding a partner, but dont want it too badly. Its like holding on to something too tightly and having it slip out of your grip. Instead, stand still and know itll come to you. However, if you just want to cuff for the winter months, then be clear and tell that person."If youre interested in participating in cuffing season, first you should figure out if youre looking for "sex, emotional comfort, just co-exist with someone in the same household and feel seen and needed, or are you simply looking to try something new this winter and are open to whatever happens. Roos says. Once you know what you want, be honest about it with other people, and get out there and start looking. Apps such as Lex, Grindr, or Hinge can be useful tools for queer individuals to find and build community in addition to more community-based events, queer bars, or social groups where you can meet people in person, Korpak recommends. But also remember that just because its cold outside doesnt mean its a good idea to settle for someone who isnt right for you just because youre lonely. Cuffing season can be playful and comforting, but its also a good time to check in with yourself emotionally, Korpak advises. Wanting connection doesnt mean settling for something that doesnt feel right. Take your time to find a connection that feels right for all.Sources cited:Kai Korpak, a sex therapist and the assistant director at Best Therapies.Jermelle Simon, an LGBTQ+ content creator, actor, and certified personal trainer.Sofie Roos, a bisexual licensed sexologist, relationship therapist, and author at relationship magazine Passionerad.

Compassionate Ways to Support Survivors of Suicide Loss From a Lifeline Counselor and Survivor
By Lisa Sugarman, 3x suicide loss survivor, Trevor Lifeline Counselor, and Founder of The HelpHUBWhen you lose someone you love to suicide, your world doesnt just breakit shifts. Permanently. And on International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day (observed on the Saturday before Thanksgiving), and every day after, we acknowledge the millions of people around the world who are learning to live inside narratives they never asked to carry. This day is a reminder that grief after suicide isnt something you get over or move past. Its something you learn to navigate, layer by layer, as you rebuild yourself in the wake of unimaginable loss.Ive survived suicide loss three times in my life, and each time, it carved out a different part of me. Each time, I felt a mixture of shock, confusion, guilt, anger, and love, all tangled together. And each time, I learned something new about what it means to survive the nuanced kind of loss that suicide brings. Now, as a crisis counselor on The Trevor Projects Lifeline, I sit on the other side of the conversation. I engage with LGBTQ+ young people in their darkest moments and remind them that their pain is real, that they deserve support, and that they matter. Its a full-circle experiencecarrying my own losses while holding space for others who are trying to survive theirs. And what Ive learned, both personally and professionally, is this:Survivors of suicide loss need support thats consistent, compassionate, and human. Not perfect. Not polished. Just human. In recognition of International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day, here are ways we can show up for people we care about who are grieving a loss that changed them forever. How You Can Support Survivors of Suicide Loss Today and Every Day1. Say Their Loved Ones Name Out LoudSaying their nameeven oncecan acknowledge their life and it shows you remember. And for survivors, that matters more than you know. One of the heaviest parts of losing someone to suicide can be the silence that follows. People often avoid mentioning the person who died because theyre afraid of making it worse. And while thats totally understandable, that silence is what can hurt the most.A simple, I was thinking about your brother today or I remember how much your friend loved music tells them: Your person still exists in the world through us and we wont forget them.2. Listen Without Trying to Fix AnythingListening without fixing can say: I see you and Im here with you and you dont have to carry this alone. Many survivors dont need explanations, clichs, or someone to rush in with answers. Instead, they need someone safe enough to hold space for them and just be present. You dont have to have the right words, because no one does. Give yourself permission to say: I dont know the perfect thing to say, but Im here in whatever ways you need me to be.Grief after suicide isnt a problem to solve. Its a story that needs a witness.3. Understand That Grief Doesnt Have a TimelineCheck in regularly. Not just in the immediate aftermath but in the long quiet afterward. Send a text. Suggest a walk. Meet for a cup of coffee. And ask, hows your heart today? Because where healing is concerned, consistency means everything.Support floods in right after a suicide, like with most losses. But it fades quickly, often long before the shock wears off.For survivors, the hardest part often comes when the meals have stopped, when life around them returns to normal, and when theyre waking up months later still unsure how to make it through the day without their person.Oftentimes, the most powerful support you can offer is your ongoing presence.4. Validate Their Feelings and Avoid At Least StatementsGrief calls for empathy, not silver linings. This can be shown by staying away from phrases like:At least theyre not suffering. At least you had time with them.At least theyre in a better place.Even though the intention may be to offer comfort, these phrases can inadvertently minimize pain. You can instead, say things like:This must hurt so much.Im here with you.Your feelings make sense.5. Encourage ConnectionIt can be tempting for survivors to isolate after suicide loss. Sometimes it feels easier to hide than to navigate conversations and emotional triggers. But connectioneven the simple, quiet kindcan be a lifeline. So invite survivors to do things that dont require emotional performance:A quiet walkA movieGrabbing coffeeRunning errands side by sideConnection doesnt have to be loud. It just has to be there.6. Offer Practical, Specific HelpGrief is exhausting, especially suicide grief thats so nuanced with things like the why, the guilt and blame, the sudden trauma, and the social stigma. It drains cognitive energy, emotional bandwidth, and physical strength. So instead of saying: Let me know if you need anything, (which puts the burden back on the grieving person) try:Im heading to the storecan I grab you some groceries?I made dinner. Ill leave it on your porch.I can walk your dog this week if that would help.Im free Thursday if you want company at that appointment.Specific offers feel doable, while general offers can be overwhelming.7. Remember the Hard Days (and the Soft Ones)Days like anniversaries, birthdays, holidays, and especially the day they lost their loved one can remind suicide loss survivors of the life they once had. These dates can carry enormous emotional weight.Offering a quick message of support like: I know this week might be hard. Im thinking of you. often help make a survivor feel seen in a moment when invisibility feels unbearable. Some Final ThoughtsSurviving suicide loss can bring about significant personal changesthe way you love, the way you trust, the way you move through the world. It can reshape your heart in ways you never asked for or expected. With the right support, survivors can find connection, resilience, and even meaning alongside the pain.If youre a survivor reading this, please remember: Theres nothing wrong with the way youre grieving. Grief is personal and it doesnt have a timeline. And you deserve support that honors the depth of your unique loss.No one should have to walk through suicide loss alone. And no one has to.If you or someone you know is struggling, The Trevor Project is here 24/7/365 for LGBQTQ+ young people. This Giving Tuesday, December 2, fans can purchase autographed copies of Yvies memoir, All About Yvie: Into the Oddity, exclusively at OddlyYvie.com. Following this event, a donation will be made to The Trevor Project, helping provide life-saving resources and crisis support for LGBTQ+ youth across the country. We caught up with Yvie to talk about writing her first memoir, embracing the intersections that shape her identity, and the message she hopes to send to LGBTQ+ youth who are learning to embrace their oddities. When people read your memoir All About Yvie: Into the Oddity, what do you hope they take away about who Yvie Oddly really is?I hope people walk away realizing that Yvie Oddly isnt a character I invented. Its the language I use to express everything that makes me me. Jovans the person I was born as; Yvie is the technicolor translation of that persons chaos, pain, and joy. Im not trying to be perfect or polished. Im trying to be honest. This book is me saying, Heres the messy, weird, stretchy truth. Because whats the point of being odd if youre not real about it?Writing a memoir is deeply personal and requires revisiting so many parts of your journey. What did you learn about yourself in the process? That Im a lot more forgiving of my past than I thought. Writing this book made me go back to all the versions of myself Id tried to outgrow: the broke teenager sleeping on buses to make drag gigs, the queer kid trying to impress everyone, the artist chasing validation. And instead of cringing, I found compassion. I also realized that Ive been creating art out of survival for most of my life. This book just happened to be another version of that, minus the hot glue gun burns.Youve spoken about being multiracial, queer, and disabled all parts of your identity that intersect in meaningful and sometimes complex ways. How has embracing all of these layers shaped you into the person you are today? Its made me weird, in the best possible way. I used to feel like my body, my race, my queerness were contradictions fighting each other. But over time, I learned theyre actually the ingredients that make me whole. Being multiracial taught me about in-betweenness. Being queer taught me that love doesnt need a rulebook. And living with Ehlers-Danlos taught me that fragility and strength can live in the same body. So now, instead of hiding the contradictions, I celebrate them, preferably in a rhinestoned bodysuit.Youre very candid about the physical challenges you experience living with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. How do you care for your mental health on days when your body is giving you a hard time? Some days, my body feels like its been hit by a drag bus full of glitter and regret. So I let myself rest. Ive learned that forcing myself to push through only breaks me more. Sometimes self-care means Netflix and snacks; sometimes it means letting myself cry; sometimes it means building something ridiculous and beautiful just to feel like I still have control over my art. I also remind myself that my worth isnt tied to how productive or flexible I am. I mean, Im literally hyperflexible. Let me have a day off!Youve been called the Worlds Oddest Queen. What words of encouragement would you offer LGBTQ+ young people who feel like they dont fit in, or who are still finding the courage to live authentically, as you have?Good. Dont. Fitting in is overrated. The world needs your oddity. The parts of you that make people raise an eyebrow are usually the same parts that will make someone else feel seen. If youre still figuring out who you are, give yourself time and patience to grow into your weirdness. Theres no deadline for authenticity. And if anyone tells you youre too much, tell them thats exactly the point.Check out All About Yvie: Into the Oddity at OddlyYvie.comThe post Into The Oddity: Yvie Oddly on Art, Activism, and Owning Your Weird appeared first on The Trevor Project.

You Are Worth It BD Wong Shares Words of Hope for LGBTQ+ Youth
BD Wong is a beloved advocate and an award-winning actor across Broadway, film, and TV. He is a Tony Award winner, an Emmy and Critics Choice Award nominee, and his accolades and recognitions honor his acting talent and his fierce support of the Asian and LGBTQ+ communities. He continues to use his artistry and platform to uplift LGBTQ+ stories and communities. He recently performed at Songs From an Unmade Bed, a benefit concert supporting The Trevor Project. Following his performance, BD spoke with us about the importance of chosen family, intergenerational care, and mental health in the queer community. In this heartfelt conversation, he reflects on how therapy, creativity, and connection sustain him, and shares words of encouragement for LGBTQ+ young people pursuing their dreams, and for anyone seeking belonging and hope. You recently performed at the Songs From an Unmade Bed benefit concert thank you! What did it mean to you to lend your talent to an event that supported The Trevor Project?I am super into the Trevor Project Mission. A huge part of the queer experience is the concept of Chosen Family which sprung from queer peoples particular need for familial support. Iconic ideas, like the drag mother, all the things we do to cultivate family, whether or not we are close to or functional with our own biological family, are unique to our community and it is absolutely essential that we nurture, champion, and protect them. To be a healthy, well adjusted queer young person who grows into a healthy, well adjusted queer older person requires, among other crucial things, fostering a world of reciprocal, intergenerational respect. The challenges of growing up queer can be greatly mitigated by the attention and care from ones older, more experienced elder family. So participating in Trevor events always feels good, and important.Youve reached incredible heights as an actor, and youve been involved in so many entertainment projects. With such a busy schedule, how do you take care of yourself and prioritize your mental health?Aside from my hobbies (fiber arts, cooking, creative writing), Im in regular therapy (schedule permitting) and Im lucky to have had the same wonderful queer therapist for decades now. These check ins and conversations and processing sessions and that sense of being heard and seen by a mental health practitioner have been absolutely essential to my well being and growth and perspective. Im so grateful for it and am so much the better and happier for it. My relationships have greatly benefited as well. Can you share any nuggets of wisdom to help LGBTQ+ aspiring actors with self-care while navigating the entertainment industry?Well, while I think it must be acknowledged that the entertainment industry is indeed an industry and its whims and challenges are almost always traceable to business and commercial goals, it can also be a powerful cultural platform for Our Voice. I really hope the young queer people making their way through careers in entertainment today will embrace the higher self esteem and greater everyday ease in living an out lifestyle thats available to them now, things that those of my generation did not have, and Id love that to be acknowledged and remembered. We of course have so much further to go (and always will), but theres also now an authentic place in modern day storytelling (and in American life generally) for Our Queer Voice.Aspiring to a career in this field is challenging, as it is for all, and on top of that, Being Different can really bring up feelings of disenfranchisement or self doubt or low sell esteem that are terribly un-useful on a creative persons plate, so one has to seek out the tools that can help them manage these challenges. One great thing (of many) that I can proudly say about The Trevor Project is that, because of this great org, nobody ever has to feel alone. I urge everyone to find and to take advantage of the many social services available to you as a member of the Queer Community. Sharing your pain and challenges is the first step to conquering them! No matter who you are, where youve come from, or what you have or havent yet accomplished, you are worth it, and someone out there cares about you and what youre going thorough. What words of inspiration and hope do you have for LGBTQ+ young people?I believe in healing hugs and holding hands. I believe in solidarity and sharing and providing someone with safety or a sense of family and brother/sister/sibling-hood and listening to stories and singing songs and cooking for one another and showing up for someone and urging others to understand the fundamental right, the fundamental need, to both love whom we choose, and to be who we are. Each of these things Ive randomly listed are gravely dependent on the idea that people are good and that good people take care of one another. If youre a person in need of support or help of any kind, you must know that there are people who not only can help you, but who would love to help you. You must never forget that someone is there, or can be there if you ask. So many of us grow up feeling a profound sense of loneliness or rejection, but for every one of us who does, theres someone who understands and whos arms are open. You can find that person without too much difficulty, and a great place to start looking is at The Trevor Project. And if youre a person who understands what Ive described and is lucky enough to be on the other side of it, please consider taking that survival perspective and giving back to those who now feel as you did back in the day. There are so many ways to share your love in this way, and the difference it can make in a young persons journey can unquestionably be the difference between life and death. The post You Are Worth It BD Wong Shares Words of Hope for LGBTQ+ Youth appeared first on The Trevor Project.

New Study Shows LGBTQ+ Youth Mental Health Crisis is Worsening in the U.S.
The Trevor Project published findings from its first-ever longitudinal study, following 1,600+ LGBTQ+ youth from September 2023 through March 2025October 16, 2025 The Trevor Project, the leading suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization for LGBTQ+ young people, published findings from the organizations first-ever longitudinal study, Project SPARK Interim Report: A Longitudinal Study of Risk and Protective Factors in LGBTQ+ Youth Mental Health. The report released today includes results from the first year of data collection, or first three waves of the study that followed 1,689 LGBTQ+ youth (ages 13-24) across the United States from September 2023 to March 2025, collecting data every six months.Analyses shed light on how specific risk and protective factors shaped LGBTQ+ youth mental health over time. After taking into account confounders, the study found that experiences such as discrimination, physical threats, and inability to meet basic needs led to higher odds of later anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts, while supportive actions from family, friends, and affirming environments improved mental health and suicide risk over time. While many of the findings in this study are devastating, they are not surprising. LGBTQ+ young people in this country continue to face elevated levels of stigma and political rhetoric, which take a serious toll on their mental health and well-being, said Jaymes Black, CEO of The Trevor Project. For the first time in our organizations history, our own research team has released a study that follows a sample of LGBTQ+ young people over an extended period of time. This allows us to clearly and unequivocally document what we know to be true: the manner in which LGBTQ+ youth are treated in this country harms their health and risks their lives, and it is only getting worse. I hope that lawmakers, community leaders, and youth-serving professionals take stock of these research findings, and join our efforts to support the health and safety of LGBTQ+ young people across the country. The Project SPARK Interim Report examined risk factors and protective factors that impact participants mental health. In the first year of data collection and analysis for the study, mental health distress increased substantially. After one year:LGBTQ+ youth reporting recent anxiety symptoms rose from 57% to 68%LGBTQ+ youth reporting depressive symptoms climbed from 48% to 54%LGBTQ+ youth reporting suicidal ideation grew from 41% to 47%While past-year suicide attempts among the sample declined from 11% to 7%, the rate observed remains higher than national estimates for cisgender heterosexual youth. Transgender and nonbinary (TGNB) youth and participants ages 13 to 17 reported the poorest mental health outcomes and represented the highest risk for suicide. TGNB youth were nearly twice as likely to report anxiety (70% vs. 42%) and suicidal ideation (53% vs. 28%) compared to cisgender peers, a pattern that persisted a year later.LGBTQ+ youth reported widespread experiences of victimization and discrimination, both at the start of the data collection period, and one year later. An estimated one-third of participants reported being physically harassed or threatened because of their sexual orientation, and two-fifths of transgender and nonbinary respondents said they were physically harassed or threatened because of their gender identity. Approximately 55% of participants reported being discriminated against because of their sexual orientation, and an estimated 66% of transgender and nonbinary respondents experienced discrimination based on their gender identity. These rates remained consistent both at the onset of data collection, and one year later. The data indicate that conversion therapy or dangerous, unethical practices that attempt to change a persons sexual orientation or gender identity remains a significant and harmful experience for LGBTQ+ youth in the U.S. In the first year of the study, reports of conversion therapy rose sharply: After one year, reports of being threatened with conversion therapy doubled from 11% to 22%, and exposure to these practices climbed from 9% to 15%.This report provides one of the first, and only, national-scale portraits of LGBTQ+ youth mental health in the U.S. that follows the same young people over time, rather than offering a one-time snapshot of their experiences, said Dr. Ronita Nath, Vice President of Research at The Trevor Project. By linking repeated measures of risk and protection to later anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation, the study moves beyond prevalence to demonstrate which experiences precede changes in health. The size and diversity of this cohort of participants strengthens the relevance of our findings, and longitudinal evidence like this is essential for informing interventions that effectively support and improve mental health outcomes among LGBTQ+ youth. The study uncovered a number of findings related to protective factors for LGBTQ+ youth. Over the course of one year, the percentage of LGBTQ+ youth who reported feeling supported at school rose from 53% to 58%. Participants also reported significantly higher rates of seeking help during suicidal crises; the proportion of LGBTQ+ youth who turned to a mental health professional during a crisis doubled from 32% to 64% after one year. Seeking support from friends also jumped from 45% to 73% over the course of one year. The findings of this study are intended for families, educators, healthcare providers, policymakers, and community organizations seeking to support LGBTQ+ youth. As the study continues, future analyses will explore long-term trends and causal relationships to dive deeper into risk and protective factors and their impact on participants. These ongoing data collection and analysis efforts are vital for informing evidence-based policy and designing interventions that support and protect the mental health and well-being of LGBTQ+ young people nationwide. The study was reviewed and approved by an Institutional Review Board. Carl Nassib on Coming Out, Mental Health, and Inspiring LGBTQ+ Youth
National Coming Out Day is a powerful reminder that living openly and authentically can change lives not only for LGBTQ+ people themselves, but also for everyone inspired by their courage. At The Trevor Project, we know that coming out can have a profound impact on mental health, whether it brings relief and joy, or new challenges and questions. Were proud to continue our partnership with the NFL and to highlight a trailblazer who makes history on and off the field: Carl Nassib, the first active NFL player to come out as gay, and proud Trevor Project Board Member. In this special interview, we asked Carl to reflect on his journey, share how he supports his own mental well-being, and to offer words of encouragement to LGBTQ+ young people everywhere.Coming out can be life-changing. How did coming out impact your mental health, both in the short term and long term?Coming out was the most freeing experience of my life. It has given me peace of mind and clarity. I no longer have to live with that constant worry of hiding who I am, and that has been huge for my mental health.Taking care of mental health is important for everyone, especially LGBTQ+ people who may face unique challenges compared to their peers. What practices, resources, or habits help you support your mental health these days?Ive learned that routines and balance are key for me. Staying physically active has always been important not just as an athlete, but because movement helps me reset mentally. I also lean heavily on close friends and family; having people I can talk to honestly is a huge resource.National Coming Out Day can provide hope and visibility to so many people. What message of encouragement would you share with LGBTQ+ young people who are on their own journey of self-acceptance?You dont need to have everything figured out right now. Take your time and move at your own pace. There are people who will celebrate you for exactly who you are, and the freedom that comes with living authentically is worth it.Youre a football legend who uses your platform to encourage all fans and inspire LGBTQ+ athletes. Whats your favorite example of how youve used your platform? The moment that stands out most to me is when I came out publicly and pledged a donation to The Trevor Project. The response was overwhelming not just from fans, but from young LGBTQ+ people who reached out to say it gave them hope. To this day, hearing from athletes or kids who feel less alone because of that moment means more to me than anything I achieved on the field. Its a reminder that visibility can save lives.Support The Trevor Project today by making a life-saving giftResource: The Trevor Projects Coming Out HandbookThe post Carl Nassib on Coming Out, Mental Health, and Inspiring LGBTQ+ Youth appeared first on The Trevor Project.

Josh OConnor Says He Felt the Pressure Playing a Hot Priest Next to Andrew Scott (Exclusive)
Andrew Scott and Josh OConnor both star in Rian Johnsons new Knives Out film, Wake Up Dead Man, but only one of them is a priest, and its not Scott. The duo also dove into the films themes of faith, the challenge of playing a priest, and what it was like acting next to Andrew Scott the original Hot Priest from Phoebe Waller-Bridges Fleabag.Of course, I had to ask if there was any playful tension on set. Did he threaten you? Like, dont come for my name? No, he didnt. He didnt. Actually he was very sweet and supportive. But yeah, I mean, I felt the pressure for sure. While his priest already came pre-named Given he was already named Father Jud sadly he already had a title Josh still felt the weight of joining the Hot Priest Cinematic Universe.Rian Johnson Has Thoughts on Hotness and HolinessWhen asked why the character wasnt simply named Sexy Priest, Johnson delivered a full sermon:We could not have said it better ourselves. Josh OConnor Drew From His Own Faith ExperienceThe priestly vibe wasnt difficult for OConnor to tap into he grew up around it.I grew up in Irish Catholic tradition I was an altar boy when I was eight years old and I was kicked off for smiling too much, he said, laughing. He still identifies with a sense of belief. I feel agnostic enough that I can believe in something. And I dunno what that is humanity or trees and plants. But yeah, I believe something. And one belief is unwavering: Most importantly, I believe in Rian Johnson.Rian Johnson Wanted a Multifaceted Conversation About FaithThough Wake Up Dead Man takes a bold leap into darker themes, especially around faith, Johnson says it came from a personal place.I grew up very, very, very Christian Im not a Christian anymore, he shared. He hoped the film would speak to people across belief systems and it has. Some people who are like me some people who are still believers someone came up to me the other day and said, Im Jewish and Im an atheist and I still loved it.That spectrum of reactions, he says, makes me really happy. In the third and darkest chapter of Rian Johnsons murder-mystery saga, Wake Up Dead Man follows Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) as he takes on his most dangerous case yet. When young priest Jud Duplenticy (OConnor) arrives to assist the magnetic but controversial Monsignor Jefferson Wicks (Josh Brolin), he discovers a small parish full of big secrets. The congregation includes church pillar Martha Delacroix (Glenn Close), suspicious groundskeeper Samson Holt (Thomas Haden Church), tightly wound attorney Vera Draven (Kerry Washington), ambitious politician Cy Draven (Daryl McCormack), local doctor Nat Sharp (Jeremy Renner), bestselling author Lee Ross (Andrew Scott), and cellist Simone Vivane (Cailee Spaeny). But when an impossible murder strikes their quiet town, Police Chief Geraldine Scott (Mila Kunis) turns to the one man who can crack the uncrackable: Benoit Blanc. What unfolds is a twisting, logic-defying mystery packed with revelations, sharp humor, and a stacked ensemble cast.Wake Up Dead Man arrives in select theaters November 26, 2025 and on Netflix December 12, 2025.Source

Did Stranger Things Just Confirm This Queer Couple in Season 5? (Spoilers)
Who knew that in a small town like Hawkins, Indiana, wed get lesbian lovers among the Demogorgons and doom? Certainly not Will Byers. Lets break down that first episode of Volume 1. SPOILERS AHEAD! The Scene Heard Round the Upside DownIn Episode 1 Season 5 the final season the gang is scattered across Hawkins trying to keep the town somewhat in tact. As a refresher, the last season ended with Vecna opening a huge gate to the Upside Down, killing multiple residents in the process before he seemingly disappeared.Robin (Maya Hawke) and Steve (Joe Keery) traded in their job at the video store to work at the local radio station (honestly, I love how these two reinvent their rsums every season). Will (Noah Schnapp), Mike (Finn Wolfhard), Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin), and Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) are clinging to academic survival. Hopper (David Harbour) and Joyce (Winona Ryder) are helping El (Millie Bobby Brown) prep for another battle, after they track down Vecnas hideout. But the real jaw-dropper? A little detour into queer romance. The First Queer Kiss of the Series FinallySTRANGER THINGS. Amybeth McNulty as Vickie in STRANGER THINGS. Cr. Courtesy of Netflix 2022While hosting her radio show, Robin casually drops that she has a date that night. She doesnt say who, but we all knew who we were manifesting from Season 4.Later, she has to cancel (because Hawkins literally cant give anyone a break), but she promises to make it up to her date revealed to be Vickie (Amybeth McNulty). The gays stay winning! And then? The kiss. But not just any lip-lock. A hot one! Will happens to catch the two sneaking a steamy little smooch at Vickies workplace while hes visiting Max in the hospital. The sight has him stumbling and dropping his soda pop. But more on that revelation later. A Quick Refresher on Will Byers JourneySchnapp has long acknowledged the subtext fans picked up on from the beginning: Wills quiet, aching crush on Mike Wheeler. After years of speculation, the actor confirmed what many already felt. Its pretty clear this season that Will has feelings for Mike, he told Variety. Theyve been intentionally pulling that out over the past few seasons.Schnapp added that Wills loneliness watching his friends pair up, fit in, and move on while he hangs behind speaks to so many queer kids trying to figure themselves out. Its why Will remains one of the shows most relatable characters. We Love Robin BuckleyStranger Things may love introducing new characters, but Robin Buckley? A necessary addition who flipped the shows DNA for the better. Fans spent all of Season 3 expecting a Steve-and-Robin romance until that bathroom confession in Starcourt Mall changed everything. After Steves crush confession, Robin admits her jealousy wasnt about Steves popularity it was because her crush, Tammy Thompson, wouldnt stop staring at him. Steve, in true himbo fashion, takes a beat before landing on the now-iconic line:But Tammy Thompsons a girl.STRANGER THINGS. (L to R) Maya Hawke as Robin Buckley and Joe Keery as Steve Harrington in STRANGER THINGS. Cr. Steve Dietl/Netflix 2022We love a casual, cool coming out story, especially one in a mainstream juggernaut like Stranger Things. And yes last season, we saw sparks flying between Robin and Vickie. Sparks that, apparently, have turned into a full flame.STRANGER THINGS. (L to R) Amybeth McNulty as Vickie and Maya Hawke as Robin Buckley in STRANGER THINGS. Cr. Tina Rowden/Netflix 2022What Happens Next?If theres one thing Stranger Things loves, its making us wait. And scream. And wait some more. But one things for sure: queer love has officially made its way to Hawkins, and it feels so good. To see how queer the cast said this season is, check out our interviews here. At the Border, Queer Joy Becomes Protest: HIV Activists Defy Stigma on World AIDS Day Eve
As the world prepares to commemorate World AIDS Day, a different kind of movement is gathering at the U.S.Mexico border on November 30, one built not only on advocacy, but on visibility, courage, and even joy. MPact Global Action, the organization behind the cross-border Kiss-In and Besoton Sidoso Internacional event, is flipping traditional activism on its head by centering queer migrants living with HIV and celebrating their humanity, not just their struggle. For Alex Garner, Director of Community Engagement at MPact, this work is personal, and deeply political. He believes that when queer migrants living with HIV gather to kiss, to hold hands, or simply to show up unapologetically, theyre making one of the most radical statements of all: We exist, we have agency, and we will not be erased.Joy Is an Act of RebellionVisibility is powerful, but for queer migrants, its rarely safe. Thats why, Garner explains, MPact creates spaces where individuals can decide their own level of visibility, their own narrative, and their own form of resistance.Visibility is an individual choice, he says. Throughout the years, many queer people have accepted the risks that come with being visible because they felt it was important to make an impact. Our job is to help create space so they can choose their visibility, and be protected as much as possible when they do.This year, that space looks like a kiss: loud, public, and deeply political. For some, its a form of protest. For others, its a love letter to their younger selves who were taught to hide.Joy is an act of rebellion, Garner shares. To prioritize our sexuality in these hostile times is a declaration of our humanity. When Migration and HIV Status Become CriminalizedWhile MPacts border activism highlights resilience, it also draws attention to harsh and often ignored realities facing detained queer migrants living with HIV. According to Garner, health care in detention is not just inadequate, its routinely denied.People in detention are simply denied access to healthcare. They are completely dehumanized, and there is evidence showing that LGBTQ migrants are vulnerable to physical and sexual assault and their health needs are ignored or not addressed, he says. One of the clearest calls he makes is to decriminalize migration altogether. These are not violent criminals. They are people fleeing violence and discrimination, and seeking to live where they can fully express their sexuality and gender. From Punishment to Participation: The Power of Community-Led MovementsThe Besoton Sidoso Internacional, a community-led gathering created by and for queer migrants living with HIV, exemplifies this shift from advocacy for marginalized people to advocacy by marginalized people. It demonstrates that our community exists, Garner says. They are willing to speak up and take a stand against homophobia, serophobia, and xenophobia.Whether through political speech or public affection, these acts reclaim both movement and meaning.Fearless Visibility: A Legacy in MotionGarner has been openly living with HIV for nearly 30 years, but what gives him hope isnt his own resilience, its witnessing new generations take the torch. When people decide to be visible as queer, or HIV-positive, or migrant, it means they are accepting the risks because they know it will be better for those who come after them, he says. And for younger activists? He has one message: Do not lead with fear.I grew up in the 80s, and my adolescence was consumed by fear. But the world has changed. Its still difficult and hostile, but weve made progress. The next generations need to approach their activism with fearlessness.A Border That Connects, Not DividesFor Garner, borders, whether political, social, or emotional, are constructs that can be dismantled. And thanks to social media, even those who cant physically attend the border event can still participate in the movement.Share your own posts demonstrating your sexuality, he says. Queer migrants and people living with HIV, from Africa to Asia to the Middle East, need to see themselves represented.Because as Garner reminds us, this isnt just a localized protest, its a global reimagining of activism. This November 30, on the eve of World AIDS Day, MPact invites the world to rethink HIV activism, not as a fight fueled by fear or tragedy, but one defined by agency, sexuality, migration, and yes, joy.Courage is what gives us hope, Garner says. When we show our courage, we remind the world that our lives matter. That is how change begins.Source

Jordan Firstman to Make Directorial Debut With Queer-Adjacent New York Drama Club Kid, Starring Cara Delevingne and Diego Calva
Jordan Firstman, the comedy multi-hyphenate whose surrealist humor and pointed cultural commentary have earned him a devoted LGBTQ+ following, is stepping behind the camera for the first time. Topic Studios announced that production is wrapping on Club Kid, Firstmans feature directorial debut, which he also wrote and stars in. The New Yorkset film marks another ambitious addition to the studios slate and continues Firstmans evolution from viral creator to one of queer Hollywoods most distinctive voices.Club Kid follows a washed-up underground party promoter whose life is upended after discovering he has a son he never knew existed. Shot on 35mm and set against New York Citys nightlife landscape, the film blends personal reinvention, queer-adjacent subculture and the kind of chaotic, emotionally sharp storytelling that has become Firstmans signature.Joining Firstman in the cast are Cara Delevingne, Diego Calva, and newcomers Reggie Absolom and Eldar Isgandarov. Delevingne, long celebrated for her contributions to fashion, film and queer visibility, continues her streak of genre-spanning roles following performances in American Horror Story, Carnival Row, and her breakout turn in Paper Towns. Calva, a Golden Globe nominee for Damien Chazelles Babylon, adds further star power to the ensemble. The project is produced by recent Academy Award winner Alex Coco and Galen Core, alongside Topic Studios, which is also financing the film. Stay Gold has joined as a co-financier. Executive producers include Firstman, Olmo Schnabel and Daniela Taplin Lundberg. Cinematographer Adam Newport Berra, fresh off an Emmy win, lenses the film. UTA Independent Film Group negotiated the financing and will oversee worldwide sales. For Firstman, the film builds on a creative trajectory that has included HBOs I Love LA, FXs English Teacher, acclaimed festival shorts and his comedy concept album Secrets, released through Capitol Records. His breakout performance in Sebastin Silvas Rotting in the Sun earned major critical praise and established him as a fearless performer and filmmaker unafraid to push boundaries.Club Kid also serves as a spotlight for rising performers. Absolom, known for roles in Apple TVs Silo and BBCs The Other Bennet Sister, and Isgandarov, who recently completed a supporting role in an upcoming A24 musical comedy, both make major feature turns.Topic Studios, the company behind Oscar-winning A Real Pain and the documentary Its Never Over, Jeff Buckley, continues its reputation for supporting bold storytellers. The studio has garnered more than 40 major award nominations across film and television and is known for backing projects that center unconventional voices, a natural fit for Firstmans singular sensibility. With production nearly complete, Club Kid positions Firstman for his biggest leap yet: from internet-famous comedian to filmmaker shaping the next wave of queer-inflected cinema. No release date has been announced, but anticipation is already building.Source

DOJ and RealPage Agree to Settle Rental Price-Fixing Case
What Happened: The Department of Justice and Texas software-maker RealPage announced Monday that they have reached a settlement in a case involving price-fixing allegations in some of the nations largest rental markets. At issue was algorithmic rent-setting software the tech company sold that prosecutors said enabled landlords to compete less and boost prices in apartment buildings in ways that could violate antitrust laws. The proposed settlement, which must now be approved by a judge, said RealPage will stop offering software that uses nonpublic, competitively sensitive data shared among landlords to recommend how much to charge tenants, officials said.Under the agreement, RealPage will stop conducting market surveys to gather such information, and it agreed not to discuss pricing strategies or trends based on nonpublic data at meetings it holds for property managers, officials said. The company also must remove or redesign software features that restrict rent decreases or align pricing among competitors, they said.A court-appointed monitor will ensure compliance with the settlement, if it is accepted. The company also agreed to cooperate with prosecutors in their lawsuit against property managers that have used its software.A 2022 ProPublica investigation showed RealPage was helping landlords decide rents in a way that legal experts said could result in cartel-like behavior. The DOJ also sued six big landlords, accusing them of using algorithmic software to work together and raise rents. Some have reached settlements with prosecutors. What They Said: The Justice Department said in a statement that the proposed settlement would help restore free market competition in rental markets for millions of American renters.Competing companies must make independent pricing decisions, and with the rise of algorithmic and artificial intelligence tools, we will remain at the forefront of vigorous antitrust enforcement, Assistant Attorney General Abigail Slater said.RealPage said in a statement on its website that the settlement provides greater certainty for housing providers and technology innovators that revenue management software can be operated confidently and in compliance with the views of federal antitrust enforcers.Through it all, our teams remained focused on serving customers and advancing the technology the industry relies on every day, said Dirk Wakeham, RealPages president and CEO. We are pleased to have reached this agreement with the DOJ, which brings the clarity and stability we have long sought and allows us to move forward with a continued focus on innovation and the shared goal of better outcomes for both housing providers and renters. The settlement did not include admissions of wrongdoing, RealPage said, and does not involve financial penalties. The company said there would be no disruption to its clients operations, saying that the settlement would formalize software modifications that were already made or planned and that all RealPage solutions remain fully available, compliant, and configurable to meet evolving legal requirements.Stephen Weissman, an attorney for the company, said RealPage believes its use of data has led to lower rents, less vacancies, and more procompetitive effects.RealPage declined to comment further on the settlement. Background: The proposed settlement is the latest development following ProPublicas 2022 investigation. Dozens of tenants sued RealPage after the initial story. The Biden Justice Department filed an antitrust complaint against the company in 2024, and in January, it sued six of the nations biggest landlords, including Greystar, accusing them of improperly working together to raise rents. Prosecutors said that one landlord told RealPage that it started increasing rents within a week of adopting the software and, within 11 months, had raised them more than 25%.The litigation, which continued under the Trump administration, was joined by at least 10 attorneys general, including the one for California, the countrys most populous state home to roughly 17 million renters.Senators have also held hearings and introduced legislation seeking to ban the use of rent algorithms like RealPages. And at the local level, cities around the country, including San Francisco, Philadelphia and Minneapolis, moved to bar landlords from using similar algorithms to set rents. Why It Matters: The Biden DOJs moves against RealPage and its landlord customers for using shared data and technology were seen as an indication that authorities were willing to wade into a fraught corner of federal antitrust law.In the past, collusion happened with a formal handshake in a clandestine meeting, federal prosecutors wrote in one filing. Algorithms are the new frontier.Trumps DOJ continued to prosecute the case this year even as the administration retooled the department and scaled back on traditional enforcement priorities like police misconduct. The proposed agreement follows the DOJs August announcement that it had made a deal with Greystar, the nations largest landlord, to settle the governments claims related to its use of RealPages algorithmic rent-setting software. Greystar does not admit wrongdoing as part of the settlement and said it accepted the deal to make clear the governments interpretation of the law and to ensure we continue to do things the right way.The post DOJ and RealPage Agree to Settle Rental Price-Fixing Case appeared first on ProPublica.

Do You Work at a Federal Prison? Help ProPublica Investigate the Federal Prison System
Last week, the Federal Bureau of Prisons posted a video of Deputy Director Josh Smith vowing to make the BOP great again. The seven-minute clip echoes the promises of change agency leaders have repeated in video announcements for months as the BOP struggles with a staffing crisis and budget shortfalls. As a reporter covering the federal prison system, I want to know: Hows that going? It has been a chaotic year in the Bureau of Prisons. The same day Trump took office, the agency director was fired. Then, bonuses were canceled. The union contract was scrapped. Dozens of prisoners and prison staff told me about shortages of basic needs, from toilet paper to food. And hundreds of exhausted officers have left, many lured away by better pay at Immigration and Customs Enforcement, as I reported last week. The same day my story published, the agency posted another video of Smith, this time announcing a plan to boost the BOP ranks by bringing back significantly enhanced retention incentives and offering one-time bonuses, paid for in part, he said, from savings from the canceled union contract. Now were all back working as one team, he said. Everythings not going to get fixed immediately. But the hard work has started, and, thanks to President Trump, we are building a bureau where every staff member is proud to serve. The announcement riled union officials. In an email to members, union leaders wrote that the video was designed to create a narrative that the union was the problem and that canceling the contract somehow fixed it.Ive been investigating the federal prison system for years, and Im going to report on what comes next. Im especially interested in tips about the leaderships priorities, contracting and budget decisions, and concerns about wrongdoing or abuses of power. And Im always interested in any documents or data you can share to paint a fuller picture of whats going on inside the bureau. At ProPublica, we appreciate you sharing your story, and we take your privacy seriously. I am gathering these stories for the purposes of my reporting and will contact you if we wish to publish any part of your story. I may not be able to respond to everyone personally, but I promise to read everything you submit. If you are a current prison employee or you have particularly sensitive information to share, you can contact me directly through Signal at KeriB.123.The post Do You Work at a Federal Prison? Amid Confusing CDC Guidance About Vaccines, Study Highlights New Risk of COVID-19 During Pregnancy
In the first 18 months of the COVID-19 pandemic, tens of thousands of pregnant women were wheeled into hospitals where they fought for their lives and the lives of the babies they carried. It took the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention until August 2021, eight months after the first vaccine was administered, to formally recommend the COVID-19 shot for pregnant and breastfeeding mothers. The CDC had found that pregnant women with COVID-19 faced a 70% increased risk of dying, compared with those who werent. They also faced an increased risk of being admitted to the intensive care unit, needing a form of life support reserved for the sickest patients, and delivering a stillborn baby. In recommending the vaccine, the CDC assured them that the shot was safe and did not cause fertility problems.ProPublica examined the harm caused by the delay in rolling out and endorsing the vaccine for pregnant mothers. Federal officials at the time told us that they wanted to ensure an abundance of evidence before issuing guidance. But a surprising turn of events this summer reversed that guidance. In May, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the Health and Human Services secretary and a longtime vaccine critic, announced on X that the COVID vaccine for healthy children and healthy pregnant women has been removed from @CDCgov recommended immunization schedule. Bottom line: its common sense and its good science. We are now one step closer to realizing @POTUSs promise to Make America Healthy Again. The next month, Kennedy fired all 17 sitting members of the CDCs Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices and replaced them with a selection of hand-picked members. The committee has since shifted its guidance, encouraging people to decide on their own whether to get the shot and to consider individual risk factors.Doctors and national medical organizations said the new guidance from the CDC has caused confusion among patients and could put pregnant women and their babies at risk of severe illness or hospitalization.COVID-19 infection during pregnancy increases the risk of preterm birth, preeclampsia, and stillbirth, read a statement from the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine. The organization, as well as the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the nations leading professional organization for OB-GYNs, reiterated their recommendations that all those who are pregnant or breastfeeding receive the updated vaccine and booster, regardless of the trimester theyre in.ProPublica found that though unvaccinated women faced devastating risks, the COVID-19 vaccine had been commandeered by disinformation and doubt. Pharmaceutical companies and government officials had not ensured that pregnant women were included in the early development of the vaccine, despite federal guidance on how to safely include pregnant and breastfeeding people in biomedical research. The HHS communications director, Andrew G. Nixon, defended the federal governments actions, saying in a statement: ACIPs recommendation applies to all individuals six months and older. It includes an emphasis that the risk-benefit of vaccination in individuals under age 65 is most favorable for those who are at an increased risk for severe COVID-19 and lowest for individuals who are not at an increased risk, according to the CDC list of COVID-19 risk factors.Pregnancy is listed as a condition that can increase risk.In the midst of the backlash against the CDCs guidance, a recent Harvard University study highlights a new risk of COVID-19 during pregnancy. In a rare look at the children of women who contracted COVID-19 while pregnant, the study found that they may be at increased risk for autism and other neurodevelopmental diagnoses by age 3.Researchers, who followed the children via their medical records from birth through their toddler years, observed some initial developmental delays at 12 months and again around 18 months, said Dr. Andrea Edlow, one of the studys senior authors and an OB-GYN at Harvard Medical School. We were seeing speech and motor delays, but we really didnt know if they were going to be persistent or evolve into other diagnoses like autism, or if children were maybe going to catch up, Edlow said. But that, unfortunately, hasnt been the case.Edlow treated many pregnant patients during the pandemic, including some who experienced a life-threatening condition known as a cytokine storm. They often had high fevers and severe inflammation for several days. The condition, she remembers thinking, couldnt be good for the placenta or the developing fetal brain.Edlow and her team studied more than 18,000 live births to mothers who delivered between March 2020 and May 2021. Of those, more than 800 had been diagnosed with COVID-19. What surprised them was that 16.3% of those babies received a neurodevelopmental diagnosis by three years, compared with 9.7% of the babies who were not exposed to COVID-19 in utero. That was a statistically significant finding. During the period covered by the study, the CDC had not yet come out with its formal recommendation for pregnant women to get the COVID-19 vaccine, and as such, most of the mothers were unvaccinated. The children of mothers who contracted COVID-19 in the third trimester, a critical time for fetal brain development, and boys had an even higher risk. The male placenta and fetal brain, the researchers wrote, are more susceptible to a mothers immune response to COVID-19 and other infections.I know its alarming, Edlow said. The researchers, she said, are not out to stoke fear. While the risk of autism is increased, Edlow said, the overall risk still remains low. The study underscores the importance of monitoring children born to mothers who had COVID-19 while pregnant for neurodevelopmental conditions.Edlow encouraged pregnant women to do everything they can to avoid getting COVID-19, including wearing masks, avoiding crowded indoor spaces and getting vaccinated and boosted.COVID is a real problem that poses risk to the mom in pregnancy and to the child, she said. And its still worth preventing, even at this point.Dr. Naima Joseph worries about how the reversal of the COVID-19 vaccine recommendation for pregnant patients will affect the health of the country, particularly its most vulnerable residents, women and children. She remembers standing in line during the pandemic to get her COVID-19 vaccine when her husband, who is also a doctor, turned to her.Are you sure you should be doing this? he asked.Joseph, a maternal fetal medicine doctor at Boston Medical Center who serves on ACOGs Immunization, Infectious Disease, and Public Health Preparedness Expert Work Group, paused. She was pregnant with twins. Like so many mothers, what she cared about most in this world was protecting her babies, but she also treated many pregnant patients sick with COVID-19 who spent months fighting for their lives from a hospital bed. Some died or lost their babies.Yes, she replied to her husband before getting the shot. The post Amid Confusing CDC Guidance About Vaccines, Study Highlights New Risk of COVID-19 During Pregnancy appeared first on ProPublica.

Trumps Immigration Forces Deploy Less Lethal Weapons in Dangerous Ways, Skirting Rules and Maiming Protesters
As the Trump administrations immigration dragnet intensified in June, a nurse in Portland, Oregon, left work one midafternoon and drove to a nearby detention facility to voice his opposition. Federal agents had set off smoke grenades, driving away many protesters at the front of the facility, but Vincent Hawkins lifted his megaphone anyway. You should stop and think about what youre doing! The shot came seconds later, a silver projectile launched through the small facilitys closed gate, hitting him in the face. The tear gas canister shattered his glasses, ripped apart his brow, crushed against his eye and concussed him. In video footage, the projectile can be seen bouncing off his face and arcing back toward the unknown Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent who fired it.Hawkins, a 25-year veteran of the emergency room, was rushed to one, bleeding and wondering if hed ever see through his left eye again. A frequent demonstrator, he knew the risks. Hed seen friends struggling to breathe through toxic chemical clouds, others pelted with pepper balls. But Hawkins was undeterred.I have things to say, he said. And if it means being wounded to do it, then here I am.The 55-year-old said hed be blind in one eye if not for the shielding effect of his glasses. Hes regained most of his vision but suffers from dizziness and vertigo, sometimes causing him to miss work.Vincent took a less lethal to the eye. Hes says hes an ER nurse. Protesters call him an ambulance. Suzette Smith (@suzettesmith.bsky.social) 2025-06-15T00:41:57.628ZSince President Donald Trumps administration launched high-intensity immigration sweeps this year, federal agents have routinely countered protestors using crowd control weapons rubber bullets, flash-bang grenades, tear gas and pepper balls. Theyve fired on American citizens and noncitizens alike in ways that some experts say might be criminal. The so-called less lethal weapons are designed to break up mobs engaged in dangerous behavior or deter would-be assailants who pose a threat. They arent intended to kill. But research has shown the weapons can cause devastating injuries or death. Federal guidelines generally prohibit agents from targeting the head, neck, throat or spine when firing projectiles like rubber bullets or pepper balls.ProPublica and FRONTLINE conducted dozens of interviews at protest scenes, reviewed hundreds of pages of court documents and photographs, and analyzed some 50 video-recorded incidents in which immigration agents and officers used these weapons in the last five months. That review found more than two dozen cases in which officers deployed the weapons in ways that appear to flout the governments own rules, including by aiming at someones head, spine or groin and deploying chemical agents at moving vehicles or near children. In Southern California, federal law enforcement fired pepper balls and rubber bullets at peoples heads and backs at least five times, and at least once at a mans groin, records and interviews show. In Oakland, California, an unarmed pastor who posed no obvious threat was blasted in the face with pepper powder. In Chicago, where more than a dozen people reported being indiscriminately pelted with pepper balls, entire blocks were enshrouded in tear gas, forcing people from their homes. A religious leader was targeted in his head with pepper balls.Christy Lopez, a former senior civil rights litigator at the Department of Justice, said many of the bystander and news videos shes seen show clearly excessive, unreasonable force that her former office would have investigated as potential crimes. They are clearly violating peoples rights, said Lopez, who now teaches at Georgetown Law. Its probably criminal, and it should be investigated as such.I dont say that lightly, added Lopez, who led investigations into misconduct and excessive force at police departments including Los Angeles, Chicago and Ferguson, Missouri. This is a very different situation than anything weve seen in the past in terms of just the routine and really brazen use of force in violation of peoples rights.Co-published WithRohini Haar, an ER doctor and University of California, Berkeley professor who studies crowd control weapons, told ProPublica that Hawkins assault in Portland was absolutely a misuse of tear gas because it was fired at his head when he posed no obvious threat. For a 2023 policy paper published by Physicians for Human Rights, Haar and her team analyzed peer-reviewed medical literature to identify more than 100,000 instances of people wounded by tear gas since 2015; the researchers found more than 5,000 serious injuries, including 14 deaths of people struck by military-grade gas canisters.Haar said Americans are witnessing a far more dangerous use of these weapons in recent months, despite calls for clearer use-of-force policies following the police killing of George Floyd in 2020 and the nationwide protests it spurred.Youre going to see a lot more injuries, she said.In a statement to ProPublica, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson said its ICE and Customs and Border Protection officers show incredible restraint but sometimes must use force as they put their lives on the line to arrest murderers, rapists, and gang members.ICE and CBP personnel are trained to use the minimum amount of force necessary to resolve dangerous situations to prioritize the safety of the public and themselves, the statement said. Our officers are highly trained in de-escalation tactics and regularly receive ongoing use of force training.Even when used correctly, manufacturers acknowledge these weapons can be lethal. As Defense Technology, a Wyoming company that makes the type of canister that struck Hawkins, discloses on many of its wares: THIS PRODUCT MAY CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH TO YOU OR OTHERS.The company did not respond to a request for comment.Aggressive CampaignBorder Patrol commander Greg Bovino, a 30-year veteran of CBP, has orchestrated many of the most aggressive immigrant roundups across the country. When forces under Bovinos command began rounding up suspected undocumented immigrants in Los Angeles in June, vocal demonstrations followed. In response, his troops used tear gas and rubber bullets in ways that drew rebuke from a California federal judge.Border Patrol commander Gregory Bovino leads federal agents in pushing back protesters from a driveway used by transports carrying detained people at an ICE processing facility in Illinois in October. Jamie Kelter Davis/The New York Times/ReduxOn June 7, a Homeland Security agent shot a local reporter in the head with a rubber bullet as the journalist covered a fierce protest at a Home Depot in Los Angeles County, causing a concussion. In ensuing days, federal personnel repeatedly fired crowd control munitions at media members, protesters and bystanders. The Los Angeles Press Club and a union representing journalists sued the Department of Homeland Security.DHS agents have consistently used these weapons to suppress First Amendment protected activity when they faced no meaningful threat of violence, the suit said. Despite common perceptions that alleged crowd control weapons are harmless, each of these weapons including, and especially, chemical weapons and projectiles can cause significant and long-lasting health harms. In early September, U.S. District Judge Hernn D. Vera issued an order restricting the use of crowd control weapons and requiring at least two separate warnings before agents or officers deployed them. Enforceable only in the Central District of California, which covers much of coastal Southern California, the order also barred agents from firing tear gas canisters and flash-bang grenades at the public and shooting rubber bullets or other projectiles at the head, neck, groin, back, or other sensitive areas, unless that person poses an immediate threat of death or serious bodily injury. That order went further than existing policies at DHS, specifically prohibiting firing on journalists and requiring law enforcement to give clear dispersal orders and allowing crowds to leave before deploying weapons.DHS appealed, saying the ruling micromanages how DHS agents respond to violent riots. The appeal is pending.Bovino has defended his officers, calling their use of the weapons exemplary. Yet allegations of misuse have followed his forces to other cities.Midway BlitzAfter Los Angeles, Bovino took his troops to Chicago. There, he led Operation Midway Blitz an aggressive campaign of roving immigration sweeps that included the siege of an entire apartment building. Those apprehended during the blitz were taken to a detention facility in a nondescript industrial park in Broadview, a Chicago suburb. Small demonstrations had been held there for years, but they exploded in size as ICE and CBP officials rushed hundreds of detainees through the suburban streets to jail and possible deportation.Federal agents and officers turned again to crowd control weapons.Raven Geary, co-founder of Unraveled, an independent news operation in Chicago, was covering a protest at the Broadview detention facility in late September when a federal agent shot her in the face with a pepper ball, causing her left cheek to bleed and bruise.Raven Geary, co-founder of an independent news operation in Chicago, was shot in the face with a pepper ball by a federal agent. Raven Geary/UnraveledIt was this very sudden, horrible pain, said Geary, who was carrying two large cameras and wearing a press badge. Then she realized she was covered in a powder containing the active ingredient in hot peppers. Youre coughing, you are sneezing, you are wheezing, it can be hard to see.Leigh Kunkel, a demonstrator, also got pelted. The crowd was not doing anything, she said, yet the pepper balls came flying at them.Agents shot her in the back of the head and the nose. Im incredibly lucky that he didnt hit me 2 inches higher, she said. I could have lost an eye.Federal Agents Fire Less Lethal Weapons at ProtestersFederal agents firing crowd control weapons during a protest at a Broadview, Illinois, detention facility in September, where journalist Raven Geary was shot in the face with a pepper ball. Steve Held/UnraveledKunkel and Geary became plaintiffs in a lawsuit seeking to curb the use of force by federal forces in the Chicago area.As part of that lawsuit, a nearby resident and mother named Autumn Hamer told a judge how she swung by the facility in the early morning to see peaceful protestors chanting, Whose streets? Our streets!Federal officers on the roof intermittently fired rubber bullets and pepper balls into the crowd, she said. A flash-bang grenade landed next to her, causing disorientation and a ringing in her ear.At a subsequent protest, she saw a projectile tear through an acoustic guitar a woman was playing. The agents fired tear gas, Hamer said, making her choke. As Hamer and others tried to move from the barricaded front of the facility toward fresh air on another street, she told ProPublica and FRONTLINE, they found themselves getting shot through a side barricade, as though agents had flanked them to box them in.It all felt cruel, Hamer told reporters. She noted that the pepper ball launchers are similar in design to recreational paintball guns. I have teenage boys, so when I look at [agents], Im like, are you pretending that youre in a video game right now?Federal Judge Sara Ellis sided with the plaintiffs, issuing a temporary restraining order that barred immigration agents from targeting journalists and using crowd control weapons unless there is a serious threat to public safety.Still, Bovinos agents continued to use the weapons. One Chicago resident captured a video that looks like it could have come from a video game.Enrique Bahena wore camera-equipped Meta glasses to a protest in Chicagos Little Village, a largely Latino neighborhood. Bahena said he was with a group of activists who were loudly but nonviolently confronting Border Patrol agents. Everyone was just telling them to get out, he recalled.Bahenas camera glasses captured a first-person view of a Border Patrol agent pointing a pepper ball launcher at him, just feet away. In the video, the agent fires at his throat, sending up a cloud of noxious smoke. On Nov. 6, Ellis, the federal judge for the Northern District of Illinois nominated by former President Barack Obama, said from the bench that the use of force shocks the conscience, before ordering dramatic changes in how federal forces use crowd control weapons.DHS decried her ruling as an extreme act by an activist judge that risks the lives and livelihoods of law enforcement officers.Rioters, gangbangers, and terrorists have opened fire on our federal law enforcement officers, thrown rocks, bottles, and fireworks at them, slashed the tires of their vehicles, rammed them, ambushed them, and they have destroyed multiple law enforcement vehicles, a department statement read.DHS appealed. Last week, a panel of three Republican appointees sided with the government, temporarily blocking her ruling and saying Ellis limitations on officers went too far so much so, the judges wrote, that they resembled federal regulation.Federal agents target protesters with less lethal weapons at an ICE building in Oregon in October. Mathieu Lewis-Rolland/Getty ImagesEllis criticized Bovino for an October incident in which he threw a tear gas canister at community members in the Little Village neighborhood. Bovino claimed hed been attacked by a rock-throwing assailant, forcing him to deploy the gas for his own protection. Ellis said video evidence disproves this. And he ultimately admitted he was not hit until after he threw the tear gas.Bovino did not respond to a request for comment made through DHS.A DHS official said personnel working under Bovino enjoy a sense of impunity when it comes to uses of force. These events keep happening because of the lack of accountability by CBP, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of repercussions. And theres usually no repercussions for agents or officers because federal prosecutors rarely prosecute agents for excessive force. We Come in PeaceOn the morning of Oct. 23, a green-and-white Border Patrol truck lurched through a crowd of protestors gathered on the Oakland, California, waterfront. The demonstrators had converged after learning that federal agents would be using a nearby Coast Guard base to launch a wave of immigration raids.Masked Border Patrol agents popped out to disperse people whod enveloped the vehicle with signs and chants. Hoping to calm the tension, a local pastor named Jorge Bautista joined the crowd to pray.Videos show an agent exiting the truck, marching toward the pastor and pointing a large-caliber weapon at his face.Im thinking, Theres no way hes going to shoot this thing at me, Bautista recalled. Im thinking, Hes just using this to scare me. Its not going to work. And the moment I realized he was close enough to hear me, I said, We come in peace. As he said those words, the agent pulled the trigger, striking Bautista with an object that dispersed what bystanders believed was pepper powder. Videos show Bautista struggling to breathe as his eyes and skin burned beneath toxic granules. The unidentified agent calmly returned to the truck.Jorge Bautista, right, was shot in the face in Oakland in October by a Border Patrol agent who fired a powder that made his skin burn and made it hard to breathe. David BaconBystanders poured liquid on his face. He kept his eyes shut and wound up in the hospital for treatment of scrapes and bruises on his chin and neck.No one should be assaulted for being out there protesting, said Bautista, who said he intends to sue DHS.You would figure they would be trained to de-escalate situations, right? Instead of going straight for using some kind of weapon to assault somebody, the pastor said. The post Trumps Immigration Forces Deploy Less Lethal Weapons in Dangerous Ways, Skirting Rules and Maiming Protesters appeared first on ProPublica.

Connecticut DMV Fires Employee Who Made Thousands Selling Towed Cars
The Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles has fired a longtime employee nearly five years after investigators found he used his position to garner steep discounts on cars he bought from a towing company, according to a termination letter obtained last week. The Connecticut Mirror and ProPublica reported in March on the accusations against Dominik Stefanski and the DMVs failure to take action against him or the towing company. The story was part of a larger series about how Connecticuts towing laws have come to favor tow truck companies over vehicle owners and how the DMVs lack of oversight has allowed abuses in the system. The DMV investigated Stefanski for over a year beginning in 2020 but didnt fire him until early November, months after the news organizations story.According to the 2020-21 DMV investigation, when employees of D&L Auto Body & Towing in Berlin, Connecticut, went to the main DMV office in nearby Wethersfield, they would make eye contact with Stefanski, who would then allow them to cut the slow-moving DMV lines. In exchange for this favor, the report said, D&L employees would allow Stefanski to select vehicles that had been towed by the company weeks or months before. D&L would then undervalue the cars on DMV forms, investigators said, allowing Stefanski to buy them cheaply and resell them for a profit. In total, DMV investigators found that from 2015 to 2019, D&L sold 15 vehicles to an investment firm owned by Stefanski, who had worked for the agency since 1999 and was then a document examiner in the DMVs main office. In one case, Stefanski bought a Cadillac for $1,000 and sold it for $17,500. The car was eventually sold by another company for $23,250.In 2020, DMV investigators recommended that Stefanski be criminally charged for the scheme they alleged made him thousands of dollars, and they completed an arrest warrant. A prosecutor decided not to file charges, however, citing prosecutorial discretion and insufficient evidence to meet the burden of proof beyond a reasonable doubt. The prosecutor suggested the DMV could handle the matter internally. But the DMV did not discipline Stefanski or issue fines against D&L in the years after the investigation. The agency declined to comment on the firing and declined to answer specific questions about the investigation.Stefanski was placed on paid administrative leave in March, two business days after the story was published. He earned just over $72,000 annually. The Nov. 6 termination letter notes that he was fired for misconduct when you used your position for financial gain.Stefanski said he has appealed and anticipates having a hearing next month. In an interview with reporters earlier this year, Stefanski maintained that he hadnt done anything wrong.Reached by phone last week, Stefanski said that after the news organizations published the article, he had a hearing in which he presented evidence, including a check he received as a loan to buy one of the vehicles. He said the check proves he paid more for the vehicle than the warrant indicated. The state rejected Stefanskis argument. The agency did not find that the information presented provided any basis to mitigate the contemplated penalty of dismissal, the termination letter said.A D&L official declined to comment on the firing but said previously in a statement that the manager working with Stefanski was fired and that the company is working with the DMV to ensure that this type of situation doesnt happen again. The companys manager at the time acted on his own and thought he was doing the right thing by selling in-operable cars, the statement said. According to investigators, many of the cars were in good condition.Stefanski said his union is helping him with the appeal, but he declined to give details until it is over.Read MoreHow a Connecticut DMV Employee Made Thousands by Selling Towed CarsLogan Williams, a representative of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Council 4, which represents DMV workers, said the union cant comment on the specifics of the case but that the rights of workers derive their strength from the integrity of due process.Every Union exists to defend this process and our members rights, Williams said in a statement. Whenever discipline is handed down in the workplace, our union has an obligation to ensure that the process is followed and that our members have access to due process.Stefanski said no one at the DMV indicated why he was being fired close to seven years after the incidents and five years after DMV investigators learned what was happening. They didnt give me an explanation. They actually didnt give me nothing, Stefanski said. The post Connecticut DMV Fires Employee Who Made Thousands Selling Towed Cars appeared first on ProPublica.

Researchers Determine Moon Serves No Purpose But Alerting Raccoons It Safe To Come Out
PASADENA, CADispelling numerous widespread beliefs about the role the celestial body plays in life on Earth, astronomers at the California Institute of Technology published a paper in the Proceedings Of The National Academy Of Sciences Friday that found the moon serves no purpose but to alert raccoons that its safe to come out. While its a common myth that the moon controls tides, our findings show its nothing more than a signal for raccoons to come out and eat trash, said lead researcher Hannah Peng, noting that the moons symbiotic relationship with raccoons has aided in helping them see their food as well as avoid predators ever since the creatures started consuming human refuse around 15,000 years ago. After analyzing countless fossil records, we have strong evidence the moon didnt even exist before raccoons split off from ancient procyonidae ancestors. The moon protects raccoons, and in return, raccoons provide the moon with endless hours of entertainment. This is also the reason why you never see raccoons in the daytime. Peng added that while the moons relationship to raccoons was conclusive, further research would be needed on the moons role in stabilizing the Earths axial tilt so that raccoons could have a regular breeding season. The post Researchers Determine Moon Serves No Purpose But Alerting Raccoons It Safe To Come Out appeared first on The Onion.

Grandmother Cant Trust Herself To Keep Raisins In House
WICHITA, KSAdmitting that the tempting dried fruit would ruin her figure, local grandmother Linda Donovan told reporters Friday that she cant trust herself to keep raisins in the house. I used to keep a canister up in a high cabinet that I couldnt reach without hurting myself, but Ive decided its more responsible to remove them from my home entirely, said Donovan, adding that she now only allows herself to enjoy raisins at restaurants. Dried grapes? Dont let me near them! Oh my goodness, I used to polish off an entire 130-calorie serving in one sitting. Not only are raisins overly decadent, but those natural sugars will have me bouncing off the walls. The last time I had raisins, I was up until 7 p.m. talking my friend Eileens ear off about the new James Patterson novel on the telephone. It would be nice to have them in the house as a treat for the grandkids, but this is for the best. Who has the willpower to resist raisins? At press time, Donovan was indulging herself in an afternoon of hedonistic debauchery after discovering an old package of prunes in the refrigerator. The post Grandmother Cant Trust Herself To Keep Raisins In House appeared first on The Onion.
