Palm Springs remains a haven for LGBTQ+ visitors
For the uninitiated, Palm Springs, California is the gayest city in the country, and maybe even the world. At least a third of the citys population of 45,000 identifies as gay or lesbian. The desert city is about a two-hour drive from Los Angeles in good traffic and a little over an hours flight from San Francisco. The city has long been a getaway for Hollywood elites as well as the LGBTQ+ community. For vacationers, Palm Springs boasts the most gay resorts of any place on the planet, with 11 in the city limits and one in the adjacent city to the south, Cathedral City.By the way, most of the gay nightlife used to be in Cathedral City, but starting in the 1990s, bars and nightclubs started springing up in Palm Springs. The first was Streetbar on E. Arenas Road in downtown Palm Springs, just east of Indian Canyon Drive. That block is now where the biggest concentration of gay businesses and nightclubs is situated. This years Palm Springs Pride is set for November 6-9. It includes a parade, festival, and other events, such as a block party.ResortsThe pool at the Santiago Resort in Palm Springs offers relaxation and fun for gay men. Photo: Courtesy Santiago ResortThe fabulously gay Santiago Resort is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. The two-story, hacienda-style property has one of the largest pools and offers one of the most picturesque mountain views of any of the gay resorts. Like its sister properties, Twin Palms and Descanso resorts, Santiago offers a free breakfast, lunch, coffee, soft drinks, and snacks 24 hours a day. Santiago has a loyal following that keeps it busy even in the slower summer months. The biggest cluster of gay resorts is in the Warm Sands neighborhood, just under a mile from the Arenas Road gay strip. That is where you will find El Mirasol Villas, Casa Oliver, Hacienda Palm Springs, Desert Paradise Resort, and InnDulge. El Mirasol Villas is the most affordable, and Hacienda is the most luxurious, but all the resorts are first-rate.Casa Oliver is the newest gay hotel, opening in December 2024 in the space where All Worlds Annex used to be. The husband-and-wife owners are already putting a number of upgrades into the property, with newly remodeled rooms and plans for a restaurant on the property. It is one of three of Greater Palm Springs resorts that is open for day passes, starting at $25.Another gay resort offering day passes is Canyon Club Hotel on Palm Canyon Drive, on the north end of downtown. Canyon Club passes are just $15. Canyon Club is the most affordable of all the resorts, with rates that start at $119 with no resort fee. Cathedral City Boys Club (CCBC), that citys only gay resort, offers day passes for $35, with a Wednesday special of $22.The fabulous Triangle Inn in Palm Springs is owned by Michael Green and Stephen Boyd. The couple is well known for their work in the community and for their help to other LGBTQ+ businesses. Green is the president of the Palm Springs Cultural Association. The property is an architectural gem. It gets its name from the triangle-shaped front of the hotel as well as the LGBTQ+ pink triangle symbol. The front of the hotel is framed by a gorgeous garden. The aforementioned CCBC is the largest of the gay resorts, spread out on 3.5 acres. It includes the Runway Bar and Restaurant that is open to guests and non-guests alike. The resort hosts a number of special events that draw locals and tourists.Sadly, there are no longer any lesbian resorts since Casitas Laquita and Desert Hearts Inn closed years ago. All of the dozen gay resorts are male, clothing optional, and most serve a free continental breakfast. Some charge a resort fee but others dont, so if you are budget conscious and who isnt take that fee into consideration when comparing prices. Rates in general are cheapest over the summer and most expensive from mid-February through early May.NightlifeHunters Palm Springs. Photo: Hunters FacebookOn the E. Arenas gay strip, you will find Hunters. The spacious club includes a main bar area, dance space, and patio. Streetbar, which always seems to be packed, draws a loyal local crowd. Other bars on the block include Dicks on Arenas (formerly Eagle 501 and before that Score), the video bar Quadz, Blackbook, famous for its upscale bar food, and Chill. The Evening Citizen bar is purposely a little hard to find and is behind Streetbar. (That is because it is an old-fashioned speakeasy bar.)There are no longer any lesbian bars since Delilahs went out of business years ago, but Hunters, and, on the north end of Palm Springs, Toucans Tiki Lounge, are very women-friendly. The Dinah, which promotes itself as the worlds largest lesbian and queer womens event and music festival, runs this year from September 24-29.While lesbians may not have a dedicated bar, theres a thriving community of queer women in Palm Springs hosting events, lesbian nights, and activities in the city. For more information, go to lesbianpalmsprings.com. The Tool Shed is on the edge of the Warm Sands neighborhood and is famous for its Thursday underwear night. And since Barracks in Cathedral City was shut down last year, it also is taking up the mantle with a Wednesday underwear night like Barracks used to have.Besides CCBCs Runway Bar, Cathedral City is home to One Eleven Bar and the Roost Lounge. Both bars are known for karaoke and live entertainment, and draw a higher percentage of locals than the Palm Springs bars.SightsDrag and Fly Tours has become a popular attraction since launching last November. Photo: Ed WalshOne of the newest attractions in Palm Springs began last November and is already among the hottest tickets in town. Drag and Fly Tours are as entertaining as they are informative. The 90-minute tour is conducted in a bus with 13-seat stadium seating, so everyone has the same good view. The tour is hosted by a drag queen and includes archival videos of some of the attractions that you will see along the way. It makes a quick pit stop on E. Arenas Road, where you will hear more about the citys gayest block.A must-see attraction is the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway. It takes visitors through four seasons in 10 minutes. If you are visiting in the summer, it could be 120 degrees in Palm Springs but a comfortable 80 degrees at the summit. At the top, you can have a meal, hike, and watch a very informative video on construction of this engineering marvel. If you are visiting in the winter, you can bring, or rent, a sled or cross-country skis.Palm Springs closes its main drag, Palm Canyon Drive, in the heart of downtown, every Thursday night for the street fair known as Village Fest. It runs from 7 to 10 p.m. June-September and from 6 to 10 p.m. the rest of the year. By the way, Palm Springs has two sunsets. The first sunset is when the sun goes behind the mountains to the west, putting the city in shade. Then about an hour later is when the sun officially sets. So, the Village Fest is shaded for at least an hour before sunset. The Palm Springs Art Museum is free on Thursday nights from 5 to 8 p.m., so you can easily coordinate a trip to the museum with Village Fest. The museums focus is contemporary art and design. It currently has an exhibit on the first floor showcasing works by LGBTQ+ artists from the museums photography, painting, and design collections. The post Palm Springs remains a haven for LGBTQ+ visitors appeared first on News Is Out.

Paige Beuckers gives Azzi Fudd the 'princess treatment' & lesbians are going wild
WNBA rookie Paige Bueckers and her former UConn teammate Azzi Fudd are once again sparking rumors about their relationship and setting sapphic TikTok on fire with a new viral video. The pair have been inspiring rumors that these besties are actually a queer couple for years, but now fans are convinced they hard launched their relationship in a new TikTok video that has already gained more than 8 million views at the time of publication.Sign up for the PRIDE.com Newsletter to get a candid take on whats fresh and fun in LGBTQ+ culture this week! The cheeky video, posted to Fudds TikTok account, is a play on a viral trend, featuring the two basketball stars sitting at a restaurant, when Fudd asks how much the meal costs and Bueckers says, $200.Oh, thats not that bad, Fudd replies. This is already adorable, but it was the way Fudd captioned the video that sent sapphics across the internet into a frenzy."Princess treatment every time I'm with her, Fudd wrote in the caption, implying that Bueckers spoils her whenever theyre together.@azzi35Princess treatment every time Im with her #spoiled @Paige BueckersThe comment section of the TikTok was full of people jumping for joy, thinking this was the duos way of announcing theyre dating. "At least Paige is winning off the court," said a comment with more than 125,000 likes.Oh this confirms everything thanks queen, one person wrote.Someone else joked, Historians will say they were just best friends."Another person commented, Am I crazy or is this a hard launch? The viral TikTok has also inspired videos of people celebrating the news or commenting it.@wbbupdatesandedits4uwar is over #paigebueckers #azzifudd #hardlaunch #wlw #kkarnold #goodtimes #celebrate #wnba #dallaswings #uconnwbb #womensbasketball #uconnhuskies #uconn #wbb #fyp #makemefamous #xyzbca #bleedblue #huskynation #viralvideoNeither woman has come out as LGBTQ+ publicly, but that hasnt stopped the persistent rumors. Not only were they teammates at UConn, taking home their first NCAA championship earlier this year, but they supported each other during their ACL injuries, created social media content together, and Fudd was by Bueckers' side during the WNBA draft. And most recently, Bueckers, a new addition to the Dallas Wings, lost her game on Saturday, but Fudd was still in the stands cheering her on.Despite fans considering this video a hard launch of their queer relationship, neither woman has confirmed they are dating.

Your LGBTQ+ travel guide to Breck Pride in Colorado
Oh, how I love to get high in Colorado. And yes, Im referring to both legal marijuana gummies and the soaring altitude of its walkable mountain towns.Last June, I was invited to the quaint historic village of Breckenridge with a group of gay journalists to experience Breck Pride also briefly known as 10 Mile Pride and it was a pure delight. From the novelty of snow-capped peaks in summer (and actual snowfall, however minimal) to the breathtaking scenery, its difficult to imagine a more picturesque backdrop for a queer celebration. In my decades covering Pride events as a travel writer, Ive been a spectator at the biggest of the big, including World Pride in New York City. Ive also marched, ridden, and floated in more modest-by-comparison observances in Puerto Vallarta, Miami Beach and the Pride Boat Parade in Norfolk, Va.Honestly, Ive lost count of how many different Pride festivals Ive attended over the years, and it never gets old seeing how other towns, states, and countries approach the celebration differently. But of all the Prides Ive been a part of, I can state with certainty that Ive never been to one smaller than Breck Pride and that only made it more magical.A drag artist performs at Breck Pride. Photo: Steven LindseyFrom the moment we arrived in Breckenridge and stepped off the 90-minute shuttle from the Denver airport, rainbow flags greeted us at every turn throughout the town. They were hung in storefront windows light poles and were also waving in the breeze on banners spanning the main street through town.I visit many small towns with a bit of caution, as residents tend to be more conservative., But we couldnt have felt more welcome or loved in Breckenridge. In a town of only about 5,000 people, the estimated 1,000 people who attended the Community Gathering on Saturday represents a significant statistic. The event took place in the heart of town on the Riverwalk Center Lawn. It featured local drag queens, big-name drag headliners Jade Jolie as Taylor Swift and Coco Montrese as Janet Jackson live music, food and beverage vendors, acrobats, nonprofit organization booths, and celebrants of all ages.Because of the relatively small size compared to others, like my hometowns Dallas Pride which normally draws around 60,000, it felt pure in its intentions, almost grassroots if you will. And thats what I remember the most. Surrounded by spectacular natural beauty, I felt more part of a community than I ever had at larger Prides. This year, Breck Pride returns from June 9-15, featuring a full schedule of events throughout the town. Among the gatherings to check out: Pride Trivia Night, a screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Gay Pop Icon Karaoke, a Fireside Chat with LGBTQ+ panelists, Pride Yoga, Drag Queen Bingo, and Pride Climbing. The main event, the Community Gathering, returns to the town center with headliner JORDY, the stage name of Jewish queer pop artist Jordan Shulman.Another perk of attending Breck Pride is building a fun weekend around the major Pride events. Read on for personal recommendations of accommodations, restaurants, and activities to make the most of your time in this mountain paradise. With lows in the 40s and highs in the 60s, dont forget to pack a jacket and gloves!Where to StayGravity HausLocated in the heart of town, this contemporary boutique riverside hotel features only 60 rooms, but its bursting with ski-town-inspired decor throughout its public and private spaces with wonderfully comfortable rooms with great views of the town and its surroundings. The property also boasts multiple hot tubs, a cold plunge, a sauna, and a well-equipped gym with fitness classes. Its also steps from the base of Peak 9 ski slopes if you come in winter, and a short walk to breathtaking hiking trails in warmer months.Bunk House LodgeFor more than 50 years, Bunk House Lodge has been a cozy retreat for the LGBTQ+ community and allies, but predominantly gay men. Its designed to be a place for fellow like-minded travelers to meet and will appeal to less fussy travelers, but the lodge attracts a high number of repeat guests. Please note that the property is considerably more rustic than a traditional hotel and is located approximately 3.5 miles from the town center. Accommodations include both private rooms (some of which are accessed by ladders) and a bunk room that accommodates up to five individuals. All options share bathrooms and amenities include a complimentary continental breakfast spread, hot tub access, and an outdoor fireplace. Its currently under consideration for inclusion on the Colorado and National Registers of Historic Places.Photo: Louie TraubWhat to DoVisit the Breckenridge TrollStrap on your hiking boots or walking shoes and venture into the woods on the Trollstigen Trail to hang out with the cutest 15-foot wooden troll youll likely ever encounter. Unlike his internet counterparts, Isak Heartstone (yes, he has a name) spreads nothing but good vibes and even better photo ops. While youre in the hiking spirit, hit up one of the longer trails, which take you by rivers, old mines, and scenic overlooks.Create a masterpiece with recycled plasticSign up for a class at Breck Create and design jewelry, pins, or your own unique work of art entirely made out of heat-pressed recycled plastic, available in a near-infinite number of rainbow hues.Relax, reflect, and recharge Book a session at Clairvergence Wellness Center and experience your choice of healing and inspirational activities, including Reiki, tarot card readings, soundbaths, yoga, and craniosacral therapy. Its an ideal way to end your time in Breckenridge on a calm, peaceful note.Get ready for lift-offPack a picnic lunch from Semplice Cafe (the vegan chickpea wrap is delicious!), then hop on a chair lift for a scenic gondola ride to Peak 8s Epic Discovery area, followed by a chair lift where hiking and biking trails, coasters, alpine slides, climbing walls, and mini golf await.Go for a rideSchedule a tour with Ridden Breckenridge and explore the town and surrounding terrain by bicycle (available even during the winter) with options that highlight the regions history along with stops at Broken Compass Brewery and Breckenridge Distillery.Where to Eat & DrinkFor a small town, Breckendrige has an abundance of incredible places to eat and drink. For breakfast, try Blue Moose for their famous Benedicts and cinnamon buns. Chow down on incredible Italian fare at Tin Plate Artisan Pizza . Enjoy cocktails at Cabin Juice or RMU, a bike and ski shop that doubles as a bar. And enjoy fine dining with casual vibes at both Radicato from James Beard-nominated chef Matt Vawter, as well as The Carlin, specializing in Pacific Northwest fare. Of course, any time of day is a good time to stop at Mimi & Pin for churros and waffles. The post Your LGBTQ+ travel guide to Breck Pride in Colorado appeared first on News Is Out.

'King of Drag's Tenderoni teases game-changing show: 'We exist and we're not going anywhere'
Before Tenderoni officially got the call to join the cast of King of Drag as one of its permanent judges, there were already rumors about the show circulating in drag king spaces. The drag king world is very small. So, the conversation started bubbling. People were like, 'Oh my god, is this really going to happen? Is this real? Tenderoni recalls to PRIDE. All the kings were excited, excited. When the email boop showed up in Tenderonis inbox inviting him to be a permanent judge, it was a no-brainer for the king. When you think about the big picture, this is groundbreaking, he says of King of Drag. This is important. I really want to take this seriously. I really want to be a part of this in a positive way, uplifting drag kings. That Tenderoni was tapped as one of the permanent judges comes as no surprise to anyone following his career. The drag star is the pride of Chicago, where he has built a reputation as an energetic and magnetic performer. His charisma and talent thrust him to victory at Alaska Thunderfucks Drag Queen of the Year Pageant in 2021.Now hes set to impart his years of kinging experience through critique and advice for a group of kings competing for the title of King of Drag on the first season (of hopefully many) of Revry's groundbreaking new drag king competition, headed to the streamer in June. While he was excited, Tenderoni did have some concerns heading into production. The show is the first of its kind to highlight kinging, which means it could easily go sideways or not offer the kind of platform for the artists that hed hoped for. I was nervous. I was like, is this going to be cheesy? Tenderoni recalls feeling in the lead-up to filming, but that all changed the moment he was on set. I was like, whoa, this is sickening!Beyond simply making for a more entertaining show for fans, the fact that the network is taking things seriously and creating a high-quality platform for the kings really matters. Thats because, as it stands now, kings are rarely afforded the same opportunity as their drag queen counterparts, which translates into both a lack of opportunity to perform and to be paid. This is not lost on Tenderoni, who sees the major, potentially life-changing opportunity a show like King of Drag could offer its contestants. A big goal that I personally want for the cast and the kings on this show is to have these same opportunities that the queens have, he says. Im so grateful that Ive had opportunities to tour nationally. I get to travel and perform all over the place. I'm sick of being the token. I'm always the one boy in the cast. I would love for another king to be with me. I would love it to be someone from this show.Speaking of the cast, while it hasnt yet been announced yet, Tenderoni gushes about the kings its audience is about to meet. The cast is amazing, he says, and was genuinely shocked to not only see how diverse the lineup is, but that he knew and had even worked with several of them. I was so happy to see them because I consider a lot of them [as] my peers. That naturally presented some complications when it came to giving them critiques. It was definitely something of a mind-boggler, he admits. But I took this opportunity very seriously. So I wanted to come into this as a mentor more than a critic. I always wanted my feedback to be constructive. I always wanted to be almost like a big brother to a younger brother. Most of all, though, he was excited to show the world the love and camaraderie between the kings. All drag kings love each other. You'll see that, it's definitely a love fest, he shares.Needless to say, an opportunity like this to highlight the art of kinging has been a long time coming, and has been a source of debate in the drag community and drag fandom for years. Some want to see the kings get their own platform, while others have been calling for greater inclusion in other drag competition series. Where does Tenderoni land in the debate? Definitely on the side of, well, why not both? I love this platform dedicated to kings, but I also think that kings and queens can live in the same world, too," he explains. I've used this metaphor before, but I always think of a drag show as like a buffet. When I go to the buffet, I'm getting something from every single part of the different areas. Why can't you have different items of food on your plate? I don't understand why it can't be mixed together. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Tenderoni (@tenderoni88)The lack of king representation not only translates to fewer bookings for those artists, but fewer artists in general, Tenderoni explains. If you think of other shows, there's 17 years of drag queen references for young drag queens to refer to. Drag kings don't have that. We're judged so harshly, but we don't have the same references or resources that drag queens do, he observes. For me, the most important part of this show is creating a supportive community and just creating platforms for people who are not represented normally. I feel like this is going to do it. I really hope it does."While fans have yet to see the kings wholl take part in the series, Revry has teased the permanent and guest judges, and the roster is impressive, to say the least. Drag king icon Murray Hill plays the role of host, while Tenderoni is joined by fellow drag king Dr. Wang Newton as well as drag royalty Sasha Velour, Gottmik, and Damian Pelliccione, on the judging panel. As if that weren't enough star power, guest judges will include Cole Escola, Landon Cider, Lisa Rinna, Vico Ortiz, Liv Hewson, Kathleen Hanna, Cameron Esposito, Bridget Everett, and more. But the guest judge who really surprised Tenderoni might also come as a bit of a surprise to viewers.Paul Feig, says Tenderoni. When I first saw him, I only saw him from behind, and he had this beautiful, glorious white hair, and he was like, so well dressed. And I was like, is Tim Gunn here? he laughs. Then, when it actually came to sitting down and judging, his feedback was so great. It was deep. I was like, 'Wow, you really get drag kings." View this post on Instagram A post shared by Tenderoni (@tenderoni88)Viewers will get to see a new side of the A Simple Favor director during the premiere episode. If you go watch the trailer back and you do it in slow motion, he goes and pops a split on the stage! Tenderoni reveals.Theres something very telling about an A-list director feeling safe and free to be camp and over the top in queer space. That's because this is the place that performers and fans alike can be their fullest, freest selves. It's one of the gifts that drag kings and queens give to their community. Even if you don't want it to be, drag is political, adds Tenderoni. As a drag king, every time you step on stage, we're making a statement that we exist and we're not going anywhere.King of Drag premieres June 22 on Revry. Stay tuned for more updates about the series on PRIDE as they roll out, and watch the teaser trailer below.
