WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMElon Musk is gone, but we have to keep our eyes on DOGEElon Musk and Donald Trumps falling out has been entertaining to watch over the past couple of weeks, if in a vaguely Nero fiddling while Rome burns way. But that spectacle has also drawn focus from what it really means for Musk to be leaving his role at the White House. That, in itself, could have disastrous consequences, and it highlights the difficulty of keeping track of everything crucial that this administration does.Musk was brought in as a special government employee to run the Trump administrations Department of Government Efficiency (despite claims that he definitely wasnt in charge). Because of rules surrounding special government employees, that meant Musk could only be in that position for 130 days. At the end of his tenure, Musk quietly pushed to be kept on, but Trump (a notorious follower of rules) said that couldnt happen. Related Trans people need allies even imperfect ones if were going to survive this administration Imperfect alliances are our essential harm reduction in this administration We can only speculate about what else the two narcissists clashed about behind the scenes, but this decision seems to have set off the massive public feud between the two. But without any other reasons, it seems like Trump letting Musk go might have been a strategic choice to allow DOGE to act in a different, more dangerous way moving forward. Dive deeper every day Join our newsletter for thought-provoking commentary that goes beyond the surface of LGBTQ+ issues Subscribe to our Newsletter today While Musk is leaving, DOGE is actually set to operate until the summer of 2026, per one of Trumps early executive orders. That might come as a surprise to some, as Musk seemed to embody DOGE for so long and as its figurehead, the two became almost a single entity. But Musks bombast in the role served as a distraction, pulling attention from other moves the Trump administration was making, and now Musks departure is a whole new distraction.Under Musk, DOGE was a showboat, where Musk wielded a chainsaw around the federal government both figuratively and literally. His cuts were loud and extreme, with headlines highlighting massive numbers of federal employees being fired, USAID being cut off at the knees, and funding for research being pulled for anything that included a buzzword. Those cuts were all terrible, but they were also executed badly. Musk advertised himself with a chainsaw, not a scalpel, so its no surprise that his cuts were anything but surgical. Weve repeatedly seen the government scramble to rehire federal workers who oversaw key safety and security measures after careless cuts, and judges have ruled that cuts have to be reversed. The pushback against DOGE has been made easier to direct because Musk is such an easy target for hate and headlines. But the new version of DOGE that is emerging after Musks ungracious exit looks like it will learn from that mistake. The Trump administration is saying there will be no single head of DOGE going forward. Russ Vought, the director of the White House Office of Management and Budget, will take on some of the work. But its also been suggested that a disparate council of advisers will oversee the department, rather than there being a single person at the top. While DOGE employees had previously reported to Musk and DOGE itself, that structure is being reworked in a way that will allow for more shadowy cuts. DOGE employees who are in different government departments will now report to Cabinet secretaries. Thats a good thing, in that it means cuts are less likely to be made to an area without proper consideration of actual needs: Cabinet secretaries are going to be on the lookout for that. But while the cuts might be more constructive, we have to remember what these people are trying to construct. Rather than DOGE making chaotic cuts and making a mess that judges will demand be reversed, more considered cuts can be made by secretaries who can then scapegoat DOGE employees to avoid any backlash on themselves. With news that the Trump administration is rushing to hire back past employees on a large scale after Musks exit, theres room to think that we might be returning to where we were before. But its not that simple. Many of those employees are no longer available or are unwilling to return to work. DOGEs past actions are going to leave massive wounds that wont heal. Similarly, research funding has been pulled for projects that have had to wrap up their entire operations: theres no talk of restoring that funding, and those projects couldnt simply be restarted if there were. Its always hard to work out what actions from the Trump administration are carefully planned strategies and how much are happy accidents for them. Either way, having a celebrity figurehead was good for getting DOGE moving, but the hatred of Musk was bringing a lot of attention to their actions and crystallizing a movement against the department. With him gone, were looking at a new DOGE that can act in the shadows unchecked without the same risk of attracting as much media attention.Musks departure and the childish fight with Trump have been a distraction from the damage that DOGE can do without him, but that is one of the major challenges that the administration poses to resistance: everything and anything can feel like a distraction. Terrible and harmful policies that need our attention still act as distractions from other catastrophic ones.We cant individually keep an eye on every part of the machine, and when we miss something, we feel like failures. The past two weeks alone have seen Musk leave DOGE, Trump march the National Guard and Marines on relatively small peaceful protests in LA against the wishes of the mayor and governor, and a military parade hosted for Trumps birthday as a show of power (even if he said it was a coincidence and the result was just sad). But we have to try, and we need the media to push to acknowledge the many facets of authoritarianism that are taking place, and not simply the latest and flashiest circus.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 Comments 0 Shares 28 Views 0 Reviews

THEONION.COMYou Sure Youre In The Mood For Another Wes Anderson Film With Everything Thats Going On?Hey, guys. Its me, acclaimed filmmaker Wes Anderson. I just finished my latest movie, The Phoenician Scheme, and its going to be great. Its got everythingan ensemble cast of A-listers, set designs to die for, and a mid-century setting in exotic locales. But real quick, before I go ahead and release it, I wanted to ask, are you sure youre still in the mood for one of my movies? You know, with everything thats been going on lately? I just thought that maybe I should check in first. Because I would hate to release The Phoenician Scheme, my charming and absurdist black comedy caper, only for everyone to feel too weird to go see itwhich, by the way, would totally make sense. I would feel weird if I were you. Theres a lot on your plates at the moment. Its okay. You can be honest with me. If Benicio del Toro wearing a fez is too much for you to handle right now, you can tell me. But, I mean, hey, no judgment if you are in the mood to see it. Be my guest! If youre ready to show up to the theater May 30given the state of the worldand say, One for The Phoenician Scheme, please, all the more power to you. Maybe this 101-minute fanciful romp featuring Michael Cera as a private tutor who speaks in a Norwegian accent is exactly what youre looking for. It wont preserve habeas corpus or the First Amendment or civil rights. But it will make you think, Huh, is that an oud Im hearing in this Kinks cover? Oof. Things sure are bad. Thank God I moved to Paris 20 years ago! Just as a gut check, how about I list off some of the things you might see in my movie and you tell me if theyre dealbreakers? Tom Hanks and Bryan Cranston rattling off my signature droll dialogueenticing or not? What about meticulously framed scenes that blend nostalgia and melancholy with just a dash of whimsy? And do you like the idea of Benedict Cumberbatch as a character with elaborate facial hair named Uncle Nubar? Or is that kind of a red flag?If you arent really feeling another one of my films, just let me know. All Im trying to do here is make sure this is what you genuinely want. Dont go just to make me happy. Id have no problem sitting on the movie for a few years, if thats what you need. Maybe I could release The Phoenician Scheme in 2028, or 2030. But then again, who knows maybe things will be much, much worse by then. Maybe this is your last chance to see my work before total economic and democratic collapse. Do you think there will be film festivals in the camps? Shoot. Now I wish Id made a movie about a film festival in the camps. Dont freak out. Im not saying things will get worse. Im just saying they could. Im trying to be empathetic, as an expat. Of course, here in France, there are plenty of problems too. Not sure what they are, though. I get my news from literary magazines. So, I dont know, what do you think? You want it? You want The Phoenician Scheme? Tilda Swinton isnt in this one, if that sways your mind one way or the other. But Jeffrey Wright is back. He wears a sea captains hat and suspenders. Anyway, I have to go now. Im riding my bicycle to the bakery. Just let me know by the end of Cannes. Au revoir. The post You Sure Youre In The Mood For Another Wes Anderson Film With Everything Thats Going On? appeared first on The Onion.0 Comments 0 Shares 35 Views 0 Reviews

THEONION.COMGunman Takes Huge Swing Ordering Hostages Buffalo Chicken PizzaCHATTANOOGA, TNIn the midst of an armed bank robbery that authorities said is still ongoing, an unidentified gunman allegedly took a huge swing during a tense standoff Monday when he ordered his hostages Buffalo chicken pizza.Law enforcement officials confirmed the First National Bank downtown had been surrounded by SWAT teams for over six hours when the would-be thief called to purchase three 18-inch Buffalo chicken pizzas for those he had trapped inside. The suspect, who is armed with an AR-15 and a handgun, reportedly opted to skip over classic crowd-pleaser toppings and take a gamble with the novelty flavor, which features spicy fried chicken, mozzarella, and a blue cheese drizzle. The bank-robbing suspectAt 6:49 p.m., the gunman contacted Rosarios Pizza and inquired about the menu with what we now know were reckless intentions, said Chattanooga police chief Daniel Beaufort, who added that workers at the pizzeriaoptions that the robber dismissed immediately as too basic and boring. Although the hostages pleaded for more straightforward pies like cheese, pepperoni, and vegetable, the suspect brazenly disregarded their preferences and rolled the dice with an unconventional choice called the Buffalo Blast. What kind of monster would place an order like that? Beaufort continued. Just because you like Buffalo chicken pizza doesnt mean everyone else will.According to officers on the scene, the gun-wielding individual took more than a dozen people hostage, including a 64-year-old security guard who experiences occasional acid reflux, a 10-year-old boy who is a picky eater, and a 39-year-old bank teller who is generally adventurous when it comes to food but strongly dislikes the taste of blue cheese. The suspect allegedly chose blue cheese drizzle over ranch, raising concerns among bystanders that those trapped inside would be unlikely to eat more than a bite of the specialty pie, particularly if it was the kind that is also topped with diced carrots or celery. My husband is in there, and hes very particular when it comes to food, said Chattanooga resident Brenda Klein, whose spouse Jeff is being held at gunpoint within the bank and failed to eat lunch today. Hes 76 years old and very stuck in his ways. He loves pizza, and he loves wings, but I know for a fact that he wont like them together.Plus, with all that hot sauce, hell definitely get heartburn, Klein added. Please, somebody help him. I dont want him to get sick.Outside, SWAT team negotiators used a megaphone to remind the gunman that he was ordering for a large group, so at the very least it was polite to get a few assorted sides like mozzarella sticks, garlic bread, or a salad for his pickiest captives. One hostage, who managed to escape through a back door, described a chaotic scene in which the groups captor brashly refused to consider their tastes when ordering a 2-liter bottle of Crush grape soda rather than a more traditional Pepsi or Sprite, telling everyone to simply trust him when he was urged to rethink things. At first I was scared, and I didnt want to try the pizza at all, said First National Bank teller Alan Walters, adding that he hid in a closet until the gunman kicked down the door and demanded he try a bite. I tried to say no, but he told me it was his favorite pizza on the menu and threatened to kill me if I didnt have a little. Eventually, I took a bite and loved it.Where has this pizza been all my life? Walters continued. Thank goodness I made it out alive and can order it again. At press time, the hostages had reportedly risen up and killed the gunman after he promised to order them another novelty pizza called the Mac Attack, which features a large scoop of mac and cheese on top.The post Gunman Takes Huge Swing Ordering Hostages Buffalo Chicken Pizza appeared first on The Onion.0 Comments 0 Shares 35 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.404MEDIA.COCalifornia Cops Investigate Immigration Protest With AI-Camera SystemThis article was primarily reported using public records requests. We are making it available to all readers as a public service. FOIA reporting can be expensive, please consider subscribing to 404 Media to support this work. Or send us a one time donation via our tip jar here.A California police department searched AI-enabled, automatic license plate reader (ALPR) cameras in relation to an immigration protest, according to internal police data obtained by 404 Media. The data also shows that police departments and sheriff offices around the country have repeatedly tapped into the cameras inside California, made by a company called Flock, on behalf of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), digitally reaching into the sanctuary state in a data sharing practice that experts say is illegal.Flock allows participating agencies to search not only cameras in their jurisdiction or state, but nationwide, meaning that local police that may work directly with ICE on immigration enforcement are able to search cameras inside California or other states. But this data sharing is only possible because California agencies have opted-in to sharing it with agencies in other states, making them legally responsible for the data sharing. The news raises questions about whether California agencies are enforcing the law on their own data sharing practices, threatens to undermine the states perception as a sanctuary state, and highlights the sort of surveillance or investigative tools law enforcement may deploy at immigration related protests. Over the weekend, millions of people attended No Kings protests across the U.S. 404 Medias findings come after we revealed police were searching cameras in Illinois on behalf of ICE, and then Cal Matters found local law enforcement agencies in California were searching cameras for ICE too.I think especially in this current political climate where the government is taking extreme measures to crack down on civil liberties, especially immigrants rights being one of those, you can easily see how ALPRs, which is an extremely invasive technology, could be weaponized against that community, Jennifer Pinsof, a senior staff attorney at activist organization the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), told 404 Media.Do you know anything else about Flock? I would love to hear from you. Using a non-work device, you can message me securely on Signal at joseph.404 or send me an email at joseph@404media.co.404 Media obtained the data through a public records request with Redlands Police Department in California. The collection of spreadsheets comprises the agencys Network Audit of what other agencies have searched using its Flock systems since June 1, 2024 and the reason the agency provided for doing so.The data shows that on February 3, the Escondido Police Department in California searched Flock cameras for an immigration protest. Days earlier the police department said it impounded 11 cars that blocked traffic and endangered the public. The Escondido Police Department and our law enforcement partners are committed to protecting the rights of individuals to express their views peacefully, Erik Witholt, the interim Escondido police chief, said, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported. However, when drivers choose to block roadways, occupy intersections and commit other acts that pose a clear and present danger to attendees and the public, we will act to restore order and safety, Witholt said.As a First Amendment lawyer I find that to be particularly concerning because ALPRs can obviously be used to identify who's driving towards, away from, parking near, and therefore being a part of attending a protest, Pinsof said. You can see how just the presence of such dragnet surveillance can chill people's willingness to speak out publicly or attend protests in causes that we believe in. And I think it's especially wrong in moments like now where the government is taking extreme measures to crack down on civil liberties of protesters specifically.Other examples in the data include:On February 7, the Raleigh Police Department in North Carolina searched Redlands and other agencies cameras, looking for hits over a one month period. The reason given was ICE. That search was across 75,819 cameras and 6,264 networks according to the data, indicating it was likely a national search not limited to just Redlands. On January 29, Nolensville Police Department in Tennessee performed a search of Redlands cameras for ICE.Lowndes County Sheriff's Office in Georgia repeatedly searched Redlands Flock cameras, with the reason given as ICE, according to the data. Those searches took place alongside the Trump administrations ongoing mass deportation efforts, with ICE tasked with arresting a quota of at least 3,000 people a day. But searches of Flock cameras in California by other agencies repeatedly occurred during the Biden administration too, the data shows, including others from Lowndes County Sheriffs Office.Flock is a popular ALPR system with a presence in thousands of communities around the U.S. These cameras constantly record the license plates, color, and model of vehicles driving by, creating a timestamped record of a vehicles, and by extension a persons, movements. Law enforcement typically conducts searches of Flock to see where a vehicle travelled without a warrant, something that an ongoing lawsuit argues is unconstitutional.A screenshot from the data. 404 Media redacted the license plate column.A Flock user guide explains that its national lookups feature allows all law enforcement agencies across the country who are also opted into the setting to search a user's cameras. After 404 Media first revealed local law enforcement agencies were performing lookups for ICE, and that a cop in Texas searched Flock cameras nationwide for a woman who had a self-administered abortion, Flock made radical changes to its data sharing system, including cutting off agencies that were searching cameras in Illinois that didnt comply with state law.A search reason being listed as ICE does not necessarily mean it was related to immigration enforcement. ICE and its Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) division has a wide mandate to investigate crimes such as child abuse or money launderering. But the data sharing is still illegal, according to Pinsof. Specifically, it violates SB 34, a law California passed ten years ago. The language of SB 34 is that a public agency shall not sell, share, or transfer ALPR information, she said. And so it's illegal for Georgia just to have access to that information full stop. It doesn't matter what the reason is. The EFF previously found dozens of California agencies were sharing ALPR data with other states.404 Medias original May investigation into ICE tapping into Flocks system was based on data obtained through public records requests by researchers who asked to remain anonymous. 404 Media provided links to the underlying dataset. 404 Media then filed dozens of its own public records requests with agencies inside California. In the wake of that article, many other locally-focused media outlets across the U.S. have used the data for their own stories, filed their own requests, or published articles based on similar data provided to them.Last week Cal Matters reported that California police were illegally sharing license plate data with ICE and Border Patrol. That article was based on data provided by anti-surveillance group Oakland Privacy and found agencies such as the LAPD and sheriffs departments in San Diego and Orange counties searched Flock systems on behalf of ICE. It differs slightly in that it was focused on Californian agencies sharing data with ICE more directly, whereas 404 Medias data shows local police in other parts of the country reaching into California on behalf of ICE.The Redlands Police Department, Lowndes County Sheriff's Office, and the City of Escondido did not respond to a request for comment. Flock declined to comment.0 Comments 0 Shares 49 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.404MEDIA.COMeta Invents New Way to Humiliate Users With Feed of People's Chats With AII was sick last week, so I did not have time to write about the Discover Tab in Metas AI app, which, as Katie Notopoulos of Business Insider has pointed out, is the saddest place on the internet. Many very good articles have already been written about it, and yet, I cannot allow its existence to go unremarked upon in the pages of 404 Media. If you somehow missed this while millions of people were protesting in the streets, state politicians were being assassinated, war was breaking out between Israel and Iran, the military was deployed to the streets of Los Angeles, and a Coinbase-sponsored military parade rolled past dozens of passersby in Washington, D.C., here is what the Discover tab is: The Meta AI app, which is the companys competitor to the ChatGPT app, is posting users conversations on a public Discover page where anyone can see the things that users are asking Metas chatbot to make for them. This includes various innocuous image and video generations that have become completely inescapable on all of Metas platforms (things like egg with one eye made of black and gold, adorable Maltese dog becomes a heroic lifeguard, one second for God to step into your mind), but it also includes entire chatbot conversations where users are seemingly unknowingly leaking a mix of embarrassing, personal, and sensitive details about their lives onto a public platform owned by Mark Zuckerberg. In almost all cases, I was able to trivially tie these chats to actual, real people because the app uses your Instagram or Facebook account as your login. In several minutes last week, I saved a series of these chats into a Slack channel I created and called insanemetaAI. These included:entire conversations about my current medical condition, which I could tie back to a real human being with one clickdetails about someones life insurance planAt a point in time with cerebral palsy, do you start to lose the use of your legs cause thats what its feeling like so thats what Im worried aboutdetails about a situationship gone wrong after a woman did not like a giftan older disabled man wondering whether he could find and afford a young wife in Medellin, Colombia on his salary (I'm at the stage in my life where I want to find a young woman to care for me and cook for me. I just want to relax. I'm disabled and need a wheelchair, I am severely overweight and suffer from fibromyalgia and asthma. I'm 5'9 280lb but I think a good young woman who keeps me company could help me lose the weight.)What counties [sic] do younger women like older white men? I need details. I am 66 and single. Im from Iowa and am open to moving to a new country if I can find a younger woman. My boyfriend tells me to not be so sensitive, does that affect him being a feminist?Rachel Tobac, CEO of Social Proof Security, compiled a series of chats she saw on the platform and messaged them to me. These are even crazier and include people asking What cream or ointment can be used to soothe a bad scarring reaction on scrotum sack caused by shaving razor, create a letter pleading judge bowser to not sentence me to death over the murder of two people (possibly a joke?), someone asking if their sister, a vice president at a company that has not paid its corporate taxes in 12 years, could be liable for that, audio of a person talking about how they are homeless, and someone asking for help with their cancer diagnosis, someone discussing being newly sexually interested in trans people, etc.Tobac gave me a list of the types of things shes seen people posting in the Discover feed, including peoples exact medical issues, discussions of crimes they had committed, their home addresses, talking to the bot about extramarital affairs, etc. When a tool doesnt work the way a person expects, there can be massive personal security consequences, Tobac told me.Meta AI should pause the public Discover feed, she added. Their users clearly dont understand that their AI chat bot prompts about their murder, cancer diagnosis, personal health issues, etc have been made public. [Meta should have] ensured all AI chat bot prompts are private by default, with no option to accidentally share to a social media feed. Dont wait for users to accidentally post their secrets publicly. Notice that humans interact with AI chatbots with an expectation of privacy, and meet them where they are at. Alert users who have posted their prompts publicly and that their prompts have been removed for them from the feed to protect their privacy.Since several journalists wrote about this issue, Meta has made it clearer to users when interactions with its bot will be shared to the Discover tab. Notopoulos reported Monday that Meta seemed to no longer be sharing text chats to the Discover tab. When I looked for prompts Monday afternoon, the vast majority were for images. But the text prompts were back Tuesday morning, including a full audio conversation of a woman asking the bot what the statute of limitations are for a woman to press charges for domestic abuse in the state of Indiana, which had taken place two minutes before it was shown to me. I was also shown six straight text prompts of people asking questions about the movie franchise John Wick, a chat about exploring historical inconsistencies surrounding the Holocaust, and someone asking for advice on anesthesia for obstetric procedures.I was also, Tuesday morning, fed a lengthy chat where an identifiable person explained that they are depressed: just life hitting me all the wrong ways daily. The person then left a comment on the post Was this posted somewhere because I would be horrified? Yikes?Several of the chats I saw and mentioned in this article are now private, but most of them are not. I can imagine few things on the internet that would be more invasive than this, but only if I try hard. This is like Google publishing your search history publicly, or randomly taking some of the emails you send and publishing them in a feed to help inspire other people on what types of emails they too could send. It is like Pornhub turning your searches or watch history into a public feed that could be trivially tied to your actual identity. Mistake or not, feature or not (and its not clear what this actually is), it is crazy that Meta did this; I still cannot actually believe it.In an industry full of grifters and companies hell-bent on making the internet worse, it is hard to think of a more impactful, worse actor than Meta, whose platforms have been fully overrun with viral AI slop, AI-powered disinformation, AI scams, AI nudify apps, and AI influencers and whose impact is outsized because billions of people still use its products as their main entry point to the internet. Meta has shown essentially zero interest in moderating AI slop and spam and as we have reported many times, literally funds it, sees it as critical to its business model, and believes that in the future we will all have AI friends on its platforms. While reporting on the company, it has been hard to imagine what rock bottom will be, because Meta keeps innovating bizarre and previously unimaginable ways to destroy confidence in social media, invade peoples privacy, and generally fuck up its platforms and the internet more broadly. If I twist myself into a pretzel, I can rationalize why Meta launched this feature, and what its idea for doing so is. Presented with an empty text box that says Ask Meta AI, people do not know what to do with it, what to type, or what to do with AI more broadly, and so Meta is attempting to model that behavior for people and is willing to sell out its users private thoughts to do so. I did not have Meta will leak peoples sad little chats with robots to the entire internet on my 2025 bingo card, but clearly I should have.0 Comments 0 Shares 46 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.404MEDIA.COThe People Search Sites in the Suspected Minnesota Killer's Notebook Are a Failure of CongressOn Monday, federal and state authorities charged Vance Boelter with the murders of Minnesota Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband. An affidavit written by an FBI Special Agent, published here by MSNBC, includes photos of a notepad found in Boelters SUV which included a long list of people search sites, some of which make it very easy for essentially anyone to find the address and other personal information of someone else in the U.S. The SUV contained other notebooks and some pages included the names of more than 45 Minnesota state and federal public officials, including Hortman, the affidavit says. Hortmans home address was listed next to her name, it adds.People search sites can present a risk to citizens privacy, and, depending on the context, physical safety. They aggregate data from property records, social media, marriage licenses, and other places and make it accessible to even those with no tech savvy. Some are free, some are paid, and some require a user to tick a box confirming theyre only using the data for certain permitted use cases. This notepad does not necessarily mean that Boelter used these specific sites to find Hortmans or other officials addresses. As the New York Times noted, Hortmans address was on her campaign website, and Minnesota State Senator John Hoffman, who Boelter allegedly shot along with Hoffmans wife, listed his address on his official legislative webpage. The sites inclusion shows they are of high interest to a person who allegedly murdered and targeted multiple officials and their families in an act of political violence. Next to some of the people search site names, Boelter appears to have put a star or tick. Those people search sites are:Intelius [this entry has a tick next to it]BeenVerified.comOwnerly.com [the note address needed is added next to this site on the list]USSearch.com [this entry has a tick next to it]NeighborWho [the note address needed is added next to this site on the list]PeopleFinders.com [this entry has a star next to it]PeopleLooker [this entry has a tick next to it]Spokeo [this entry has a tick next to it; another entry notes not free]TruePeopleSearch.comTruthFinder.comInformation.comPipl [a note says not free next to this entry]Addresses.comYellowpages.comSenator Ron Wyden said in a statement The accused Minneapolis assassin allegedly used data brokers as a key part of his plot to track down and murder Democratic lawmakers. Congress doesn't need any more proof that people are being killed based on data for sale to anyone with a credit card. Every single American's safety is at risk until Congress cracks down on this sleazy industry.404 Media has repeatedly reported on how data can be weaponized against people. We found violent criminals and hackers were able to dox nearly anyone in the U.S. for $15, using bots that were based on data people had given as part of opening credit cards. In 2023 Verizon gave sensitive information, including an address on file, of one of its customers to her stalker, who then drove to the address armed with a knife.404 Media was able to contact most of the people search sites for comment. Thryv, the parent company of YellowPages.com, was the only one that replied and declined to comment.0 Comments 0 Shares 42 Views 0 Reviews

NEWSISOUT.COMData on sexual orientation and gender is critical to public health without it, health crises continueunnoticedAs part of the Trump administrations efforts aimed at stopping diversity, equity and inclusion, the government has been restricting how it monitors public health. Along with cuts to federally funded research, the administration has targeted public health efforts to gather information about sexual orientation and gender identity. In the early days of the second Trump administration, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention took down data and documents that included sexual orientation and gender identity from its webpages. For example, data codebooks for the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System were replaced with versions that deleted gender identity variables. The Trump administration also ordered the CDC to delete gender identity from the National Violent Death Reporting System, the worlds largest database for informing prevention of homicide and suicide deaths. For many people, sexual orientation and gender identity may seem private and personal. So why is personal information necessary for public health?Decades of research have shown that health problems affect some groups more than others. As someone who has studied differences in health outcomes for over 15 years, I know that one of the largest health disparities for LGBTQ+ people is suicide risk. Without data on sexual orientation and gender identity, public health cannot do the work to sound the alarm on and address issues that affect not just specific communities, but society as a whole. https://www.youtube.com/embed/kGuyyvdZcK0?wmode=transparent&start=0 Clinicians are concerned about the purging of health data that is essential to patient care.Alarms and benchmarksHealth is determined by the interplay of several factors, including a persons genetics, environment and personal life. Of these types of health information, data on personal lives can be the most difficult to collect because researchers must rely on people to voluntarily share this information with them. But details about peoples everyday lives are critical to understanding their health.Consider veteran status. Without information that identifies which Americans are military veterans, the U.S. would never have known that the rate of suicide deaths among veterans is several times higher than that of the general population. Identifying this problem encouraged efforts to reduce suicide among veterans and military service personnel.Studying the rates of different conditions occurring in different groups of people is a vital role of public health monitoring. First, rates can set off alarm bells. When people are counted, it becomes easier to pick up a problem that needs to be addressed.Second, rates can be a benchmark. Once the extent of a health problem is known, researchers can develop and test interventions. They can then determine if rates of that health problem decreased, stayed the same or increased after the intervention. My team reviewed available research on how sexual orientation and gender identity are related to differences in mortality. The results were grim.Of the 49 studies we analyzed, the vast majority documented greater rates of death from all causes for LGBTQ+ people compared with people who arent LGBTQ+. Results were worse for suicide: Nearly all studies reported that suicide deaths were more frequent among LGBTQ+ people. A great deal of other research supports this finding.Without data on sexual orientation and gender identity, these issues are erased.Lost data costs everyoneHigher death rates among LGBTQ+ people affect everyone, not just people in the LGBTQ+ community. And when suicide is a major driver of these death rates, the costs increase. There are societal costs. Deaths from suicide result in lost productivity and medical services that cost the U.S. an estimated $484 billion per year. There are also human costs. Research suggests that for every suicide death, about 135 people are directly affected by the loss, experiencing grief, sadness and anger.President Donald Trumps targeting of research on sexual orientation and gender identity comes at a time when more Americans than ever an estimated 24.4 million adults identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. Thats more than the entire population of Florida.LGBTQ+ people live in every state in the country, where they work as teachers, executives, janitors, nurses, mechanics, artists and every other profession or role that help sustain American communities. LGBTQ+ people are someones family members, and they are raising families of their own. LGBTQ+ people also pay taxes to the government, which are partly spent on monitoring the nations health.Stopping data collection of sexual orientation and gender identity does not protect women, or anyone else, as the Trump administration claims. Rather, it serves to weaken American public health. I believe counting all Americans is the path to a stronger, healthier nation because public health can then do its duty of detecting when a community needs help.John R. WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMTrump administration is using anti-trans orders to roll back sports opportunities for all girlsThe Trump administration is using its anti-trans actions to try to dismantle civil rights for both trans and cis women alike and its taking an unusual route to do so.The Department of Energy (DOE) is seeking to rescind the section of Title IX that says schools must allow students to play on sports teams with the opposite sex if there is no team for their sex available (unless the sport is a contact sport). The rule has allowed girls to play on boys teams in schools that dont offer an equivalent girls team. Related Simone Biles tells off anti-trans scourge Riley Gaines: No one in sports is safe with you around! The GOAT has spoken. The DOE claims the policy ignore[s] differences between the sexes which are grounded in fundamental and incontrovertible reality and says eliminating it aligns with Donald Trumps anti-trans executive order, Keeping Men Out of Womens Sports. Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today The rescission of the rule would only apply to schools that receive funding from the DOE, which provides money to some schools for research and other programs, such as its Renew Americas School grant to assist with energy upgrades.Whats more, the administration is exploiting a loophole to try to rush the rule change through without the standard 60-day public comment period. The DOE is using a process called a direct final rule (DFR), which does not require the formal rulemaking process but is typically used for simple changes, such as form updates. The DFR process allowed the rule change to take effect on July 15 unless significant adverse comments had been submitted by June 16. Thousands of comments were submitted, though they are not visible to the public. Its not clear whether the rule will officially take effect. If the rule does change, it will not only affect trans athletes. Schools that receive DOE funding will no longer be required to allow cisgender girls to play on boys teams when a girls team does not exist. Shiwali Patel, senior director of safe and inclusive schools for the National Womens Law Center, told K-12 Dive the change is blatant sexism, and harmful to women and girls. The Trump administration is trying to gut long-standing Title IX protections that intend to provide women and girls with more opportunities to play sports, and without following the legally required rulemaking process, no less. Patel added that the administration clearly doesnt actually care about protecting women and girls, as it has used this claim to justify its crusade against trans rights, especially when it comes to trans student-athletes.Julia Martin, director of policy and government affairs at legal and consulting group The Bruman Group, explained that the administration was able to keep the proposed rule change under wraps for so long because no one would have expected it to come from the DOE, as the Department of Education typically handles these kinds of policies. The proposed change, in fact, was slipped into the middle of a list of 47 so-called burdensome and costly regulations outlined in a DOE press release in May announcing the departments plan for a major overhaul to puportedly save the American people an estimated $11 billion and cut more than 125,000 words fro the Code of Federal Regulations. Part of what I see happening is this sense of overwhelm, Kel OHara, senior attorney for policy and education equity at Equal Rights Advocates, told HuffPost. Theres so much happening that its hard to follow. [The Trump administration] is trying to put these things through back doors, which makes it hard for the people who normally keep an eye on these things to catch it.OHara said the administrations use of the DFR process is also worrisome for the future of other civil rights protections. The really concerning part from my perspective is that this could essentially provide a blueprint for dismantling civil rights protections across the board. A second proposed rule change also seeks to rescind similar Title IX protections for education programs. The administration is also using the DFR loophole to try to push this change through on the same timeline.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 Comments 0 Shares 28 Views 0 Reviews
