Doctor With Positive Attitude Learns Something New From Every Malpractice Suit
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VAMaintaining that mistakes were simply life lessons in disguise, upbeat general surgeon Ezra Weber told reporters Friday that he views every malpractice suit as a chance to learn something new. Some people would let being found liable in a few multimillion-dollar wrongful death cases get them down, but youve got to shift your mindset and remember that mistakes arent setbackstheyre setups for growth, Dr. Weber said while jotting down Do not place next to insulin on a vial of pentobarbital. I always tell residents that if youre not failing, youre not growing. For example, I never would have learned why youre supposed to wear gloves on both hands when operating if I hadnt given that woman sepsis. And hey, how are you ever supposed to learn how many bloody marys with breakfast significantly impair your fine motor skills if you dont screw the pooch a couple times? Dr. Weber went on to remark that he was looking forward to brushing up on the latest medical findings and getting some much needed R&R during his upcoming eight-month prison sentence. The post Doctor With Positive Attitude Learns Something New From Every Malpractice Suit appeared first on The Onion.

This man stood up for a trans woman who was being harassed. He got beaten & hospitalized.
Police in Austin, Texas, are investigating the assault of a transgender woman, her friend, and another man who stepped into defend them as a possible hate crime.According to Chron, the trans woman, who asked that her name be withheld, was enjoying an afternoon with friends at Barton Springs Pool, a popular Austin swimming hole, on Saturday, July 26, when three men began flirting with her two friends. A friend of one of the women, who was not present but posted an account of the incident along with video of the men fleeing the scene to Reddit, characterized the interaction as the women being incessantly hit on by the three assailants. Related Lawmakers & activists protest cruel bathroom bill outside state capitol: Leave our bodies alone Were done watching our trans community be attacked by politicians who wouldnt last five minutes walking in their shoes, one Rep. declared. The trans woman told local NBC affiliate KXAN that when one of her friends went to talk to the three men, one of them pointed at her, saying, I dont agree with that lifestyle, its gross. The friend backed off and told the trans woman and a male bystander, identified as Jarod by Chron, about the interaction.According to the Reddit users second-hand account, the three men became aggressive, escalating their verbal attacks against the three women, accusing the other two girls of being trans, poking at them near their breasts, etc. Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today The trans woman told KXAN that both she and Jarod got pissed and went to talk to them and ask what their issue was.The three men then proceeded to get violent and aggressive, yelling at us and getting in our faces until one of them decided to start swinging and punched Jarod in the jaw, knocking him unconscious, she told Chron. I quickly ran over to him in an attempt to help Jarod out but was then punched in the face by the assailant in the orange shorts.Video of the assault shared by Austin performer and activist Brigitte Bandit on Instagram backs up the trans womans account. One clip shows a second woman, identified by Chron as Tokyo, being shoved to the ground by a man in orange shorts. A man in black shorts intervenes and is punched by the man in orange shorts. As the confrontation continues, a second man in a cowboy hat sucker punches the man in black shorts, who falls to the ground, apparently unconscious. As a second woman approaches the unconscious man, she is punched in the face by the man in orange shorts.A separate video shows the three men fleeing the scene, the man in orange shorts shoving one of the women again. In a July 29 statement posted to X, the Austin Police Department (APD) said that officers arrived at the scene around 5:22 p.m. on Saturday to find Jarod being treated by Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services. He was later taken to a local hospital.According to a GoFundMe campaign set up by his parents, Jarod sustained gashes to his head, a bleeding ear, a broken jaw, and a concussion and will require surgery. A construction worker and father of a young son, Jarod is without health insurance, and his injuries will require him to miss up to three weeks of work, according to a message on the GoFundMe page. As of Friday, August 1, the campaign has received over $68,000, more than triple its initial goal of $20,000.In a July 29 Instagram post, Bandit said that she believed the three assailants had been identified and that information had been sent to the folks involved. ADP has also asked that anyone with information about the attack or relevant photo and video evidence contact Capital Area Crime Stoppers. In her post, Bandit also included what she said was a message from the man who was attacked while defending the trans woman and her friends.I just wanted to stand up for a nice person that I had just met, the message reads, but the outpouring of love from your community has been overwhelming, so thank you with all of my heart.Speaking to Chron, the trans woman described Jarod as an absolute angel.I had never known him before that day, but he stood up for me when I was being harassed and he took the most of the assault, she told the outlet. He deserves every penny to help pay for his surgery and his time off work to care of himself and his kid.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

MAGA playlists exposed and they're full of gay anthems and artists
Being tone deaf and out of touch is sort of a hallmark of the Republican Party. That was made startlingly apparent on the Presidential campaign trail when President Donald Trump kept playing Bruce Springsteens anti-Vietnam War song Born in the U.S.A. and gay anthems Y.M.C.A. and Macho Man at rallies without any sense of irony or nod at the hypocrisy. But apparently this lack of music literacy and ease at letting their hypocrite flag fly trickles down from the top because Trump isnt the only homophobic, anti-trans Republican who likes to blast gay anthems.A website claiming to have accessed the Spotify listening habits of members of the Trump administration, democratic lawmakers, tech leaders, and journalists, and the results from conservatives on this so-called "Panama Playlist" will have you scratching your head. While its hard to verify how accurate the Panama Playlist website is, Wired confirmed that New York Times reporter Mike Isaacs list is accurate, and five other individuals on the list confirmed the accuracy of this list to The Verge, according to Wired. Which means that right-wing politicians like Ron DeSantis, Pam Bondi, and JD Vance all support policies that strip LGBTQ+ people of their human and legal rights while blasting queer anthems and music made by queer artists. You cant count on a lot in this life, but you can always count on extreme hypocrisy from the Republican Party.JD VanceVice President JD Vance, who opposed the Respect for Marriage Act, which sought to codify same-sex marriage equality, has been a vocal opponent of trans rights, including fighting to restrict gender-affirming care for minors, and he has consistently repeated anti-LGBTQ+ Republican talking points like calling queer people groomers. And when he was running in the Republican presidential primary, DeSantis campaign posted a homophobic video. 'Honk If You Hate Elon:' Two Days of Protest at the Tesla Diner
After spending last week with Tesla fans who wanted the world to know that their Tesla purchases had nothing to do with politics, I spent this weekend at the Tesla diner protests, talking to people who disagreed with that stance. On both Saturday and Sunday, organisers from Resist the Coup and Tesla Takedown Santa Monica brought crowds and sieg-heiling Elon Musk-shaped car-dealership inflatables to the front of the new diner. Drums, megaphones, and shouts from the assembled protesters were accompanied by horns from passing drivers responding to Honk If You Hate Elon signs.Steven was there on the first day of the protest with his 16-year-old daughter.Protesters outside the diner on Sunday. Photo: 404 MediaHes a piece of shit, but lets get the political science stuff out of the way, Steven told me when I asked if he thought support of Tesla could be considered apolitical. Elon Musk has platformed white supremacists and anti-semites on X. He got rid of all the moderation. He put back accounts that were clearly neo-Nazis. He's changed algorithms to promote that type of hate. Him and DOGE did massive cuts in the government, including our civil services. He's cut cancer research. Did I mention he was a giant piece of shit? He's cut our aid to Africa, which will result, without exaggeration, in millions of women and children and innocent people dying. Millions, he said. I'm not a big fan of people who give the Hitler salute. I mean, I'm kind of fussy like that. He gave it twice at Trump's inauguration, he continued. He's a Nazi. And he cheats at video games. You have another question? The guy saluted Hitler twice on national television, Dave, lead organiser for Tesla Takedown Santa Monica. Dave spent both days of the protest drumming and calling chants, like when you eat your Tesla burger, youre funding mass murder, when you eat your Tesla fries, another hungry child dies.We fear for the future of democracy in the United States of America, he said. And there is no bigger poster child for the corruption and the influence of money in politics than Elon Musk.Protesters brought signs and costumes. Photo: 404 MediaDave explained that targeting Tesla, as a publicly-traded company, is one of the only levers available for people to express disapproval of Musks actions. The protests took place days after a July 23 Tesla earnings call which disclosed an almost 12 percent year-on-year decline in revenueits steepest year-over-year revenue decline in at least a decade. The share price is currently around 15 percent lower than it was a year ago.Antonia and Stas had come to the diner for date night; they had known the protest was happening and were talking and joking about that in the car, as it would be a feature of their date. Antonia said the diner is capitalism, and you can't separate capitalism from politics. But, shed been thinking: wouldn't it be great if he just focused on ideas like this? Making people's lives better and easier, in a way that, like, wasn't interfering with elections around the globe, and at home in America?Elons a full blown fascist, said Josh Greene on Saturday afternoon. I mean, he donated $250 million to put Trump back in the White House. He bought Twitter to spread right wing conspiracy theories, and he's helping to dismantle democracy in this country.A diner guest leaving during the protest. Photo: 404 MediaA group of teenagers walking by yelled four more years! Trump is the greatest! at Greene as I was interviewing him. Read a book, pal! he yelled back. The teenagers hung around to try to interrupt the protest further. They spent about an hour standing very close to, yelling at, and filming individual protesters, shouting about Trump. One Tesla-owner, Holly, was standing and watching this happen. It makes me sort of sad and emotional to watch, she said. I can tell they're trying to incite some sort of, like, interaction, violent or otherwise, and I don't know. It's just, I feel like it's a sad state right now.Holly had brought her kids to the diner for lunch as she thought it would be fun. She said she didnt identify with the Tesla community, but had just wanted an electric car, and she thinks its annoying that Tesla has become a political flashpoint.I don't think Musk is a good guy. I don't want him in politics. I don't want him running our country, she said. She said that, politically, her allegiance was with the protesters. But she didnt think there was anything that Musk could do that would encourage her to get rid of the car: my privilege is, it doesn't impact me one way or another, she said.People passing in cars honked their horns, waved, or flashed lights as they saw the protesters. A few times, I saw a Tesla slow down or pull up alongside the protesters to chat. Dave from Tesla Takedown later told me that a lot of older Tesla model owners pump their fists and say, yeah, we're with you too, we just got to wait until our lease is up.Other passing cars filmed or yelled out of their windows. Twice, I saw Cybertruck drivers interact with the protest. The first time, a woman gave them the middle finger out of her car window, and the second time, a man who had driven past once lapped the block, to do a sieg heil over his kids head.A man does a "Hitler salute" from his car as he drives by the protesters on Sunday afternoon. Photo: 404 MediaDean Barlage, a resident of the adjacent building, came down to see the protest. He said that he felt the saluting Musk balloons and protesters signs with swastikas or curse words were inappropriate for children eating at the diner, who might ask their parents for explanations of what they were seeing or reading.Toby Bronson, who had helped organise the protest with Resist the Coup, was also at the diner both days. He said that they had experienced much more support than harassment from passing cars, which shows what the city is all about LA is the one fighting back and this town's not going to quit. We're not going to stop. He said that he hadnt been bothered by the teenagers - it's pretty hilarious considering they're all about 13. So they can't vote, he said. The only thing I said to them was, you know, you guys are the same age as the people on the Epstein list, he told me. They didnt like that.On Tuesday, 29th July, I was contacted by Tesla Takedown Santa Monica who said that they had received anonymous messages online, threatening a drive-by pepper spraying event, if they came back to the diner the following weekend. That evening, Bronson posted that the protest would be happening again - every weekend until the diner closes.

Ive seen political tension between trans men & feminist lesbians change over the last 5 decades
When I was first realizing that I was trans, back in the 1960s and 70s, the second wave of feminism was at its highest crest, typified by widely available posters and t-shirts printed with the declaration, A woman without a man is like a fish without a bicycle!Feminist consciousness-raising circles were common, though lesbians were still largely closeted, and lesbian inclusion was openly debated within the activist group National Organization for Women, whose leaders worried that recognizing queer women would jeopardize the passage of the Equal Rights Amendment to the U.S. Constitution (which still has yet to pass). There were no trans men visible to me, let alone on the national stage, and the possibility of female-to-male (FTM) transitioning was barely imaginable. Related Trans mans culture shock after transitioning provides critical insight into male loneliness The human species looks so much colder standing from this side. While I was a student at the University of Oregon in Eugene from 1966 to 1970 (ages 17 to 21), and in the MFA program for creative writing from 1970 to 1972 (graduating at age 23), there was virtually no one to talk to about transness in my neck of the woods. I had already figured out that I was cross-gendered, by which I meant that my brain was not female. And although I knew plenty of butch (and femme) women, I didnt know anyone like me.I had stopped wearing any feminine articles of clothing, and I had already changed my name to Jamison (or Jamie for short), which was cute, safe, and androgynous. I had two different girlfriends during my six years at the university, and neither of them were lesbian-identified; people around me either assumed I was a young man or a butch dyke. Dive deeper every day Join our newsletter for thought-provoking commentary that goes beyond the surface of LGBTQ+ issues Subscribe to our Newsletter today Upon completing my studies, I moved to Portland, Oregon, where there was a large queer community and a flourishing lesbian feminist scene. After doing odd jobs for a few months, I landed a position with Pacific Northwest Bell Telephone Company, becoming the first woman in the region to work as a construction cable splicer. It wasnt what I had hoped to do after six years of college, but it paid well, and I got to wear jeans, coveralls, and flannel shirts. It was hard physical labor, but I was comfortable in my body. Meanwhile, my parents, back in Oakland, California, were disappointed that I was wasting my education and that I wasnt trying to find work or social activities that would make me into a socially acceptable adult woman. The front page of the FTM Newsletter, issue #41 | The Digital Transgender Archive By the mid-1970s, there were a few trans men in North America who were actively trying to connect with others and educate about what was then called FTM transsexualism, notably Jude Patton (in southern California), Rupert Raj (in Toronto, Canada), Mario Martino (in New York and Florida), andclosest to meJason Cromwell (in Seattle, Washington). But because the networks for information-sharing were so limited in those days, I didnt learn about any of them until the late 1980s. Some queer community newspapers sometimes carried, or adult bookstores (sex shops mostly frequented by heterosexual men) might display, cautious notices about local trans-related meetings, but I never went to those places or saw any such notices.I did see Steve Dain, an FTM gym teacher who made headlines, on a television talk program in 1976. He had gained notoriety because he lost his job as a high school girls physical education teacher in Emeryville, California, due to his transition to male. But it took me 12 years after his TV appearance to locate and speak with him. I had so many questions that I believed only he could answer.Of course, all trans men do not start off as lesbians; though many were always attracted to men and perceived themselves as gay men. Also in 1976, a friend of mine was accepted into a gender program at a major university hospital, and I watched him become a happier person and fade into the fabric of society. Did we talk about masculinity? No, never. He only talked about how good it was to transition, feeling like he was more comfortable in his body, and that he seemed to fit better in the world when others perceived him as a man. In 1978, I returned to the San Francisco Bay Area with my lesbian partner. We both wanted to be closer to our families there, and to have more expansive job prospects. I also hoped to locate Dain. I was gradually becoming more confident that transitioning would be a positive move for me, too.In 1987, I contacted Lou Sullivan, who lived in San Francisco, through a small notice he had placed in a newsletter from Atlanta, Georgia, called The Transsexual Voice. The notice advertised his pamphlet, Information for the Female-to-Male Cross-Dresser and Transsexual, for $5. Lou and I became friends, and he was able to connect me with Steve Dain and many other men with transsexual histories. A week before Lou died from complications related to HIV infection in March of 1991, he had asked me to take over his FTM Newsletter (which is still available at the Digital Transgender Archive) and to help keep alive his FTM support group that met quarterly in San Francisco. I couldnt let him down. It was through the newsletter and the support group which soon began meeting monthly and was led by me until August 1999 that many conversations about trans masculinity began to take shape. Many of us trans men thought of ourselves as feminists, and we recognized the resentment between us and lesbians who worried about butches becoming men through the establishment of trans masculine community organizations in the 1990s. Regardless of our bodies or our differences, our disabilities, or our actual or presumed privilege, we are men, and the size or shape or fact of our masculinity cannot be threatened because it belongs to each of us.Of course, all trans men do not start off as lesbians; though many, like Lou Sullivan, were always attracted to men and perceived themselves as gay men. Others tried hard to be straight women before they figured out they were actually men and discovered that transition was a possibility. The borders defining these and many other identities were beginning to shift, blur, and even dissipate as the 21st Century approached.Trans men in the 1990s began to speak and write openly about their identity development and the evolution of their self-perceptions as men. Aware of their difference from men who were socialized as male by a patriarchal system and aware of the irrational oppression that was visited on women our ideas of trans masculinity began to take new forms. In San Francisco, on March 28, 1998, the Public Library hosted a Butch & FTM Day of Dialogue (reported on in the June 1998 issue of the FTM Newsletter, #41), that gave voice to serious frustration on between feminists and trans men, encouraged by polarizing presumptions that our culture broadly engages in not much different than that which divides our politics today. At that time, typical catchphrases were Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus, or Women are good and men are evil. Today, similar catchphrases are Toxic masculinity vs feminine purity, There are only two sexes, and Biological reality. Yet in the 90s, there were glimmers of hope that we could work together to bridge the cisgender and transgender divides if we wanted to.The persistent invisibility and the marginalization of trans men continue to harm us collectively. Powerful political forces today are threatening our livelihoods, our healthcare, and our very existence, and this may be discouraging many of us from both community building and self-expression.In January 2005, I published an article in the journal Men and Masculinities called Part of the Package: Ideas of Masculinity among Male-Identified Transpeople. There, I explored the then-current literature that focused on masculinity and trans-masculinity, and reported the results of a small, very informal study I conducted with both cis and trans men about their perceptions of their own masculinity. I concluded, Masculinity by itself is not the problem for feminism; maleness is not the problem for women. The problem is the paradigm that frames females as inferior and encourages men (and women) to see maleness and masculinity as not feminine. Both masculinity and femininity can be corrupted by the desire for power over others, all while gender is easily scapegoated as the cause of such corruption.Questioning the categories and rigid definitions of sexuality and gender, while actualizing their masculinity, many trans men today have been working in opposition to toxic masculinity, to develop the qualities that support healthy masculinity, which includes many principles of feminism and mindfulness.Sure, there are some trans men today who buy into the patriarchy and expect to enjoy the privileges given to men, regardless of their culture or race; like I said, were not all alike. But my favorite forum for exploring healthy masculinity today is the Intentional Man Project, which is doing excellent intersectional and intergenerational work to actualize health and wellbeing for trans men and their extended communities.A copy of Jamison Greens keynote address from the 1st FTM Conference, published in the FTM Newsletter, issue #59, 2005 | The Digital Transgender Archive On the individual or small group level, many trans men today are finding themselves actualized and in strong communities with each other, with cis men, and with feminist women. We have more trans men who are writing fiction and nonfiction, actors who are landing major roles in mainstream productions, entrepreneurs, politicians, physicians, mental health professionals, and this is great. But in the bigger picture, the persistent invisibility and the marginalization of trans men continue to harm us collectively. Powerful political forces today are threatening our livelihoods, our healthcare, and our very existence, and this may be discouraging many of us from both community building and self-expression. I believe we will survive the current zeitgeist and we will find our footing again, but doing so will require focus, courage, and sometimes patience. Creating polarizing requirements for belonging will diminish our core strengths and weaken our collective ability to solve the pressing problems of our LGBTQ+ communities, both in the US and globally. One thing most of us trans men know, or are learning to know, is that regardless of our bodies or our differences, our disabilities, or our actual or presumed privilege, we are men, and the size or shape or fact of our masculinity cannot be threatened because it belongs to each of us.Ill be 77 years old this fall. Im married to a strong, feminist woman whos a proud social justice activist, Im about to become a grandparent for the first time, Im working on films and new books that are telling the stories of our communities, and Im not planning to stop. Being alive in my transitioned male body has been the best possible way I could live my life because I know who I am. Masculinity doesnt require me to be anything other than myself.Jamison Green led FTM International from 1991-1999, has made changes to laws and policies to improve trans visibility and access to medical care and civil rights, and is the author ofBecoming a Visible Man, and an author/editor ofA History of Transgender Medicine in the United States: From Margins to Mainstream. He held a leadership role in the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) from 2003 to 2018.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

What's worse, Jinkx teased, some of the insults don't even make sense at times."I'm clearly a straight woman," Jinkx said, instinctively, but quickly realized that she hadn't identified herself correctly. "Well, pansexual.""Pansexual!" Ziwe reacted.Jinkx replied, "Yeah, but I ain't no [bleeped-out slur]." Produced and co-written by Dan Nigro, the ballad is soaked in theatrical flair and melancholy, as Roan recalls haunting details of a lost love, like green hair and a beauty mark next to [her] mouth, that seem to follow her across every New York block.I wrote it as I was stumbling around New York with a broken heart, Roan shared in a press release. I kept envisioning us on every street, fire escape, coffee shop, park and yes the subway.A Cinematic, City-Slicked VisualDirected by Amber Grace Johnson, known for her work with FKA Twigs and Jorja Smith, the music video brings Roans urban heartbreak to life through whimsical, surreal imagery. Dressed in extravagant outfits and Rapunzel-length wigs, Roan wades through Washington Square Parks fountain, sheds a power suit in the wind, and trails phantom visions of her ex through subway tunnels and sidewalks. The visual is both theatrical and intimate, capturing that particular kind of heartbreak where everything reminds you of someone youve lost, especially in a city that never slows down. The Next Chapter for the Midwest PrincessThe Subway arrives amid a whirlwind era for Roan, who picked up a Grammy for Best New Artist earlier this year. It also follows the release of The Giver and the viral success of Good Luck, Babe!, which peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped charts globally.Roans also announced a run of pop-up shows this fall under the title Visions of Damsels and Other Dangerous Things. The short tour includes four nights at Forest Hills Stadium in Queens, New York, as well as shows in Kansas City and Pasadena. In a recent social media post, Roan shared that the concerts are a gift to fans before she heads into the studio to write the follow-up to her acclaimed debut, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess.Obviously not knowing this really chaotic year would follow the performance, it didnt really leave me the time to build the world the song deserved, she wrote. But finally we are here.Heartache, glamour, and a little public transportation, what more could we ask from pops newest princess?Source

Lordes Sister Indy Yelich Unveils Fame Is a Bedroom, an Intimate EP on Love and Queer Identity (Exclusive)
Indie-pop singer and songwriter Indy Yelich is preparing to share a side of herself few have heard before. Her forthcoming EP, Fame Is a Bedroom, set for release on August1, captures deeply personal stories of identity, relationships and growing up in the long shadow of fame.Yelich, known as Lordes younger sister, took Gayety by the hand this week to reflect on what inspired this candid collection of songs. In an exclusive interview, she revealed that she composed much of the EP in real time, documenting experiences as they were unfolding. This is my most personal record yet, Yelich said. I wrote these tracks while living them. It feels like a sonic goodbye to big relationships and past parts of myself. Releasing it now just feels right.Sail Away: A Song of Queer Friendship and Lost LoveOne of the most compelling tracks, Sail Away, delves into the complexity of a queer relationship that blurred the line between friendship and romance. Yelich says she drew on her own experiencessharing beds, heartfelt conversations and an unspoken longing.Inspired partly by Chappell Roans Good Luck Babe, Sail Away explores the uncharted emotional terrain of female intimacy and same-sex longing. Through its haunting melody and reflective lyrics, the song captures the push and pull of bonds that are difficult to define.A Bedroom Full of MemoriesThe EPs title, Fame Is a Bedroom, echoes its intimate tone. Yelich describes the bedroom as her creative cocoon a space for writing, crying, healing and self-reflection.Each song unpacks a piece of her story, from her first move to New York at 18 to coming to terms with her queer identity and navigating emotional entanglements.Influences That Shaped the SoundMusically, Fame Is a Bedroom features lush, atmospheric production guided by influences like Mk.gee, Holly Humberstone, Ethel Cain, Bon Iver, Billie Marten, Gigi Perez and Chappell Roan. Yelich aimed for songs that breathed where lyrics and arrangement had room to evoke mood and memory.Queer Voice Center StageFame Is a Bedroom speaks to queer audiences through its exploration of female friendship, longing and the evolving understanding of sexuality. Yelich, who came out at age 19, says her identity is inseparable from her creative expression. She hopes listeners will find resonance in the silences, the questions and the spaces between wordsmoments where identity forms and fractures.Lessons Learned Through HeartbreakYelich says emotional honesty and self-awareness were essential to writing this EP. She credits painful breakups and friendships for prompting personal growth. On emotional boundaries, she admits its a work in progress. Communication and self-care, she says, are ongoing practices.Growing Up as Lordes SisterThe shadow of fame has shaped Yelichs life from a young age. As Lordes sister, she faced inevitable public scrutinysearch engines knew her address and her family biography. She acknowledges the challenge of carving a creative identity that stands apart from her famous sibling.A Farewell and a BeginningFame Is a Bedroom wraps up a chapter in Yelichs life, offering a space to process and let go. At the same time, it serves as a bold announcement of her artistic independence and personal evolution. With songs about codependency, heartbreak and sisterhood, Yelich has created a collection that is vulnerable, relatable and emotionally rich. Her voice, both lyrical and literal, asserts itself with quiet power. The EP will be available August 1 across all streaming platforms. For queer pop and intimate storytelling that resonates with real lived experience, Fame Is a Bedroom is poised to be a landmark moment.Source

Gracie Abrams Brings Out Robyn for Surprise Dancing On My Own Duet at Lollapalooza
The queens of pop vulnerability united on Thursday night when Gracie Abrams brought out none other than Robyn to perform her generation-defining anthem Dancing On My Own during the closing moments of her Lollapalooza set.For the thousands packed into Grant Park for Day 1 of the festival, the emotional payoff was huge. Abrams, known for her soft-spoken ballads and Swiftian lyricism, ended her set with a mic-drop moment no one saw coming: a surprise duet with Robyn, the Swedish pop legend who rarely takes the stage.A Full-Circle MomentThis wasnt the first time Abrams had taken on Dancing On My Own. Back in 2022, she performed the track solo during her Lolla debut on a smaller side stage. Fast-forward to 2025, and she closed out her main stage slot by welcoming Robyn herself.Last time we played was in 2022, and I covered my favorite song of all time, Abrams told the crowd. Ultimately, the best song ever written, Dancing On My Own by Robyn. And by some miracle, the queen herself is here with us tonight! The two then launched into a stripped-down, emotionally potent version of the 2010 heartbreak anthem, weaving in a snippet of Abrams own Close To You in the outro. A fitting blend of past and present, and a reminder that sad girl pop is here to stay.Robyns Rare Return to the SpotlightRobyns appearance marked one of the few times shes performed live in recent years. Aside from her cameo at the Saturday Night Live 50th anniversary concert earlier this year, where she sang the same song alongside David Byrne, her public performances have been few and far between. Her arrival on the Lollapalooza mainstage felt both intimate and iconic, and the crowd responded in kind. There were tears. There were screams. There were people FaceTiming their exes mid-chorus (probably).Gracies Set: Tear-Stained, Sparkly, and PackedAbrams performance was a masterclass in millennial melancholy, complete with acoustic strumming, sparkly eye makeup, and enough emotional gut-punches to keep tissues in business. Her set leaned heavily into her 2023 sophomore album, The Secret of Us, and included crowd favorites like I love you, Im sorry and Thats so true. The VerdictIf you needed proof that the pop girlies are the new arena rock stars, look no further than Abrams Lolla set. In the tradition of last years breakout star Chappell Roan, she turned emotional intimacy into a large-scale singalong, and raised the bar by inviting a pop legend to share the mic.Robyn and Abrams on one stage? Thats not just a crossover, its a cultural reset.Source

Conservatives have been railing against groomers for years. So why do they support Donald Trump?
For the past five years, its been impossible to discuss LGBTQ+ issues on social media platforms like X and Facebook without seeing comments calling LGBTQ+ people and their supporters groomers or worse. Politicians and advocates who built their brands around hating LGBTQ+ people like Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) and Nancy Mace (R-SC), anti-trans Republican Valentina Gomez, and activist Matt Walsh all fashion themselves as opponents of sexual abuse. And the ties between the anti-LGBTQ+ right and the biggest child sex trafficking conspiracy theory of the past decade QAnon are glaring. But its all projection, and its important for LGBTQ+ peoples self-worth and for the fight against child sex abuse to keep that in mind. Related Founder of Protect Our Kids First arrested for allegedly downloading child sex abuse material Meanwhile, right-wingers continually accuse LGBTQ+ people, drag performers, and their allies of being pedophiles and groomers. Dive deeper every day Join our newsletter for thought-provoking commentary that goes beyond the surface of LGBTQ+ issues Subscribe to our Newsletter today This has become harder to ignore in the past month as evidence continues to pile up that Donald Trump knew that he was years-long best friends with one of the most notorious child sex traffickers, Jeffrey Epstein. Trump keeps on making very suspicious statements about how much he was involved in Epsteins harmful activities, even complaining about Epstein stealing underage girls from him.John Oliver summed up some of the evidence that the U.S. currently has a pedophile for a president, and in the week since this clip, even more damning evidence has come out. Its no coincidence that someone like Congresswoman Greene, who constantly rails against trans people for supposedly grooming kids into becoming trans (which is just stupid, becaause thats not how being transgender works, and we need to be calling this idea that teachers are transing kids stupid more often), is also one of Trumps biggest supporters despite the fact that he even openly admits to sexually abusing women. Its called pedocon theory pedo from pedophile, con from conservative the idea that pedophilia is inherently tied up with movement conservatism. Samantha Hancox-Li has a great article at Liberal Currents explaining it in more detail, and she sums it up thus: If conservatism is thetheory, pedophilia is the practice. Hancox-Li points out that child sex abusers in high-power positions in the GOP greatly outnumber those in the Democratic party and that conservative institutions like the Catholic Church, the LDS Church, and the Southern Baptist Convention have all had massive child sex abuse scandals. Pedocon theory suggests that this is not an aberration, she writes. Pedocon theory suggests that this was the inevitable result of the conservative project, because the conservative project is inherently pedophilic. For conservatives like Greene, child sex abuse is an aberration and a sin, just like homosexuality and trans identity. People do it because theyre weirdos, and people who are weird in one aspect of their lives and who refuse to follow the rules laid out for them (either by unspoken norms or in texts like the Bible) are simply chaotic, perverted, and libertine and are therefore likely to do anything else thats chaotic, perverted, and libertine like abuse children. This is why QAnon believers often describe their theorized international cabal of child sex abusers looking to take the adrenochrome out of kids as satanic. Its not enough to just have such a cabal; it has to beanti-Christian because Christianity, to them, provides rules and morality. And whats more anti-Christian than Satanism? But this isnt how it actually works. The liberal view on the matter is that its about power; child sex abuse happens when an adult has a lot of authority over young people and little accountability or oversight. This is why large Christian institutions often have issues with child sex abuse. Its not uncommon for churches to tell victims of sexual abuse that they must forgive their abuser instead of calling the police protecting their own hierarchy is a more important goal to many Christians than the safety of their parishioners. This view that child sex abuse is connected with power dynamics not sin or abnormal sexuality is consistent with the fact that the victims of child sex trafficking tend to be people from historically disempowered groups. According to the Human Trafficking Collaborative at the University of Michigan, almost all the victims of sex trafficking are women and girls, and most of them are people of color, with just over half being Black. LGBTQ+ youth are at greater risk of being trafficked because of family rejection, youth homelessness, and substance use (consistent with minority stress). Conservatism is fundamentally about maintaining and strengthening these sorts of power structures. While Republicans like Greene might see consistency between her vocal opposition to child sex trafficking and her even more vocal opposition to accepting trans kids for who they are, the reality is that her stances are completely contradictory. Parents who drive away their trans kids, through direct rejection or shame, put them in situations where they are vulnerable to trafficking. Parents who try to keep all discussions of sex and sexuality out of schools to protect their childrens innocence are leaving them vulnerable to sexual abuse. Parents who refuse to entertain the notion that church leadership is wrong when it comes to demonizing LGBTQ+ people are sending a message that these people are infallible authorities and no one will believe you if you say they victimized you.And the kind of conservative parent who becomes outraged that a doctor or another mandatory reporter would want to privately talk to their kid about whether theyre experiencing abuse well, that ones pretty self-explanatory. Liberals often say that every conservative accusation is a confession, and thats true here too. Trump spent 2024 describing transgender people as threats to women and children, despite there being no evidence that they are, even after he had been found liable for sexually abusing a woman by a jury, and he had been accused by dozens of women and even some children of mistreating or violating them. (Trump denies all these allegations.)And what better way to deflect attention away from ones history of abuse than to paint oneself as a great defender of women and children? The idea that LGBTQ+ people are a threat to children is one of the oldest and nastiest stereotypes used to deny us our rights and our humanity. And one of the reasons that conservatives spread it is to keep from actually having to take real steps to fight child sex abuse.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

This gay Olympic figure skater just proposed to his boyfriend and 'he said yes'
We could all use an injection of joy right now, and lucky for us, love is in the air!Out gay Olympic figure skater Paul Poirier just proposed to his boyfriend and shared the happy news with the rest of the world with a cute Instagram post of the two men showing off their new engagement rings. We did a thing (he said yes), Poirier wrote on social media, announcing his engagement to boyfriend Kevin.See on InstagramPoiriers figure skating partner, Piper Gilles, was one of the first to congratulate the lovebirds, commenting, So happy for you two!! Youve deserved all the love. The 33-year-old world champion shared the news with those closest to him before making the announcement public. The couple has yet to announce a wedding date.It was a very casual proposal at home during our evening routine, Poirier told Outsports. It was really nice to share that quiet moment together, and then to share the news with our families and closest friends. Were both very excited! It takes a lot of guts to come out as an athlete. Luckily, more and more LGBTQ+ Olympic athletes are taking the plunge. In fact, four Olympic athletes kissed their partners in front of the world during the last Olympics, six lesbian couples who competed at the Paris Olympics, and gold medalist Jade Carey hard launched her new girlfriend just this past March.See on InstagramPoirier may be a fairly private person and a bit of an introvert, but he came out publicly back in 2021, a year ahead of going to the Beijing Winter Olympics.[Being a gay athlete] hasnt been something that Ive really talked about very much, especially in a public setting, Poirier said at the time. Ive had this attitude that my private life is my private life and my life outside of skating is my life outside of skating. I havent necessarily allowed all of those things to [blend] together. I think with the lead-up to the Olympic Games in the next year, I definitely see opportunities to share what we do and who we are to a much wider audience, and that opportunity is not lost on me.Poirier and Gilles are currently working to land a spot at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina dAmpezzo, Italy.

Demi Lovato Drops Fast Video and Makes Peace With Bigg Chill in the Most Iconic Way
Demi Lovato is back, and shes burning rubber and bridges no longer. On Aug. 1, the singer released the music video for Fast, the lead single off their upcoming ninth studio album. But before the video even hit YouTube, Lovato made headlines with a surprise promotional pit stop at The Bigg Chill, the same frozen yogurt shop they once publicly criticized in 2021.For pop culture historians (and people who were online during the early pandemic), this is more than a clever marketing move, its a full-circle moment. The 2021 Froyo Feud, RevisitedLets rewind for a second. In April 2021, Lovato called out The Bigg Chill for promoting diet culture after spotting sugar-free and gluten-free options near the counter. Do better please, she wrote in a since-deleted Instagram Story, sparking intense backlash. The Bigg Chill defended its product offerings, saying they catered to a wide range of dietary needs, from diabetics to vegans. What followed was a messy exchange of DMs, a few notes app apologies, and plenty of think pieces. Now, three years later, Lovato is not only over it, theyre leaning into it. In a cheeky TikTok posted to their account, they stroll confidently through The Bigg Chill while Fast plays in the background, practically daring fans not to eat this moment up.Inside the Fast Music VideoDirected by Daniel Sachon, the Fast video matches its title with high-octane visuals: Lovato struts through chaotic streets where cars blaze, clubgoers hover, and semi-clothed partiers dart around in every direction.Draped in a pink-and-white Prada outfit and translucent Metropolis heels, the star commands the scene like a glamazon on a mission. The stylist behind the look, Chris Horan, confirmed the ensemble was custom-curated for the visuals blend of elegance and anarchy. But the best part? Lovato uses the video to nod to their most viral pop culture moments with a string of blink-and-youll-miss-it TV screen cameos:Poot Lovato, the alter-ego born from a bad Tumblr angleThat time they sang Skyscraper to a ghost on UnidentifiedThe favorite dish meme: a mugThe Disney knees from Camp RockA clapback to a fat-shaming trollRather than ignore their meme legacy, Lovato puts it front and center, turning the internets favorite bits into badges of honor.A New Era, A New AttitudeFast marks a high-energy, self-aware chapter in Lovatos career. The track itself is a synth-driven anthem about craving momentum and following desire at full speed:Its the kind of pop declaration that feels equal parts rebellion and rebirth, much like the rest of their recent rollouts. With a Bigg Chill cameo and a fiery visual metaphor, Lovato is not just promoting a song, theyre reclaiming a narrative.Source

And Just Like That to End After Season 3 The Final Curtain Call for Carrie Bradshaw
And just like that one of TVs most beloved queer-adjacent universes is preparing to take its final bow. After three seasons of cosmopolitans, couture, and complicated conversations, HBO Maxs And Just Like That, the sequel series to the iconic Sex and the City, will conclude with its third and final season. Series showrunner Michael Patrick King confirmed the decision in a heartfelt statement released Friday on social media. While I was writing the last episode of And Just Like That Season 3, it became clear to me that this might be a wonderful place to stop, King wrote. Along with Sarah Jessica Parker, Casey Bloys, and Sarah Aubrey, we decided to end the popular series this year with a two-part finale and extended the original series order from 10 episodes to 12. SJP and I held off announcing the news until now because we didnt want the word final to overshadow the fun of watching the season. With that, Carrie Bradshaws storyand the stories of the many LGBTQ+ characters and themes shes walked besidewill wrap up in whats sure to be a fashion-forward and emotionally rich conclusion. From Manhattans Streets to the Heart of Queer CultureWhen Sex and the City premiered in 1998, few could have predicted its deep impact on queer audiences. But its unapologetic femininity, its embrace of sexual agency, and its celebration of chosen family resonated far beyond its intended demographic. For many LGBTQ+ viewers, the show offered a rare vision of urban life where nonconformity, glamour, and friendship ruled supreme.Though the original series drew some criticism for its lack of diversityparticularly in its portrayal of queer charactersit has long held a cherished spot in queer pop culture. Whether it was Stanford Blatch, played by the late Willie Garson, or Anthony Marentino (Mario Cantone), gay men were thereeven if often relegated to the sidelines. And Just Like That made a visible effort to change that.Queerer, Older, and WiserThe reboot returned in 2021 with a fresh set of characters and a mission to reflect a broader range of voices and identities. In addition to bringing back Sarah Jessica Parker (Carrie), Cynthia Nixon (Miranda), and Kristin Davis (Charlotte), the show introduced a diverse supporting cast including Che Diaz, played by nonbinary actor Sara Ramrez.Ches presence alone sparked massive conversation across LGBTQ+ spaces and beyond. Love them or hate them (and the internet certainly has opinions), Che represented a radical shift in mainstream storytellinga nonbinary Latinx comedian navigating relationships, career struggles, and self-acceptance. And Mirandas romantic and sexual awakening with Che was a bold pivot from the original shows more traditional arcs.Whether or not the reboot always hit the mark, it gave queer people a reason to see themselves reflected in a world once too straight, too white, and too binary. The Legacy ContinuesEven If the Story EndsWith HBO Max extending Season 3 to 12 episodes and planning a two-part finale, fans can expect a thoughtfully paced ending. And while the curtain is coming down on And Just Like That, Michael Patrick Kings wording suggests that the broader Sex and the City universe may not be gone forever. The ongoing storytelling of the Sex and the City universe is coming to an end, he wrote, but fans knowwhen it comes to this franchise, never say never is more accurate than goodbye.Though Kim Cattralls absence as Samantha Jones loomed large in the first two seasons, her surprise cameo in Season 2 lit a nostalgic fire across social media. Will she return again before the end? HBO is remaining tight-lipped, but fans remain hopeful.A Toast to Carrie and the Queer Women Who Loved HerEven as Carrie Bradshaws journey draws to a close, her legacyparticularly within LGBTQ+ cultureremains secure. Queer fans have long embraced her independence, her contradictions, her fabulous fashion, and her flair for drama. From gay bars quoting her monologues to drag queens recreating her runway moments, Carrie has become something of a queer icon. And the reboot series didnt just honor thatit expanded on it. By allowing Miranda to fall in love with a nonbinary person, by presenting nuanced explorations of gender, race, aging, and identity, And Just Like That dared to evolve. It wasnt always perfect. But it was always trying.Source

Karoline Leavitt says the president plans to extort schools into ending gender-affirming care
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has claimed that the presidential administrations recent extortion of Brown University in Rhode Island will help end gender extremism and the institutions barbaric procedures of gender-affirming care for children, including the provision of puberty blockers (which Leavitt dishonestly refers to as chemical castration). The deal, announced Wednesday, requires Brown University to pay $50 million over 10 years to state workforce development organizations (which the federal government will reimburse the university for), and to follow the presidents executive orders commanding institutions to ban transgender women from sports teams and facilities matching their gender identity and to discontinue provision of any gender-affirming medical care for minors. In exchange, the federal government will restore over $500 million in federal contracts and research grants that the administration illegally withheld without the necessary congressional approval. During yesterdays White House press briefing, a reporter asked if the administration will prioritize ending gender-affirming care provided by other universities in the future.Leavitt replied, Ending the chemical castration of children in our country is a priority of this administration. Weve talked to many of these universities about it, but also the President has also taken very strong action to cut off the funding for any medical institution in this country that provides those barbaric procedures. The administration has kidnapped and detained pro-Palestinian college and university activists under the pretense that they threaten national security by leading on-campus protests and writing editorials in student publications. Brown is the third Ivy League school, alongside Columbia and Harvard, to cave to the administrations demands that they end all DEI initiatives and trans-inclusive policies under the illegal threat of losing hundreds of millions in federal education funding. When commenting on Columbias similar extortion settlement, Department of Education Secretary Linda McMahonadmitted, This is a monumental victory for conservatives who wanted to do things on these elite campuses for a long time because we had such far left-leaning professors. Her comment undermined the administrations claims about its primary goal being to protect students from antisemitism and discrimination.During the briefing, Leavitt also claimed that Brown Universitys agreement to ban trans women from womens sports is helping womens sports. Critics of trans sports bans have noted that such bans do nothing to stop the unequal funding and abuse that harm female athletes. In a statement, Brown President Christina Paxson noted that the universitys agreement with the federal administration includes a clause preventing the government from dictating the schools curriculum or the content of academic speech. The Universitys foremost priority throughout discussions with the government was remaining true to our academic mission, our core values, and who we are as a community at Brown, Paxson said. We stand solidly behind commitments we repeatedly have affirmed to protect all members of our community from harassment and discrimination, and we protect the ability of our faculty and students to study and learn academic subjects of their choosing, free from censorship.Paxson didnt mention how the university plans will protect trans students from discrimination while forcing them to use bathrooms and locker rooms that do not align with their gender identity.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.
