A researcher has scraped nearly 100,000 conversations from ChatGPT that users had set to share publicly and Google then indexed, creating a snapshot of all the sorts of things people are using OpenAIs chatbot for, and inadvertently exposing. 404 Medias testing has found the dataset includes everything from the sensitive to the benign: alleged texts of non-disclosure agreements, discussions of confidential contracts, people trying to use ChatGPT to understand their relationship issues, and lots of people asking ChatGPT to write LinkedIn posts.The news follows a July 30 Fast Company article which reported thousands of shared ChatGPT chats were appearing in Google search results. People have since dug through some of the chats indexed by Google. The around 100,000 conversation dataset provides a better sense of the scale of the problem, and highlights some of the potential privacy risks in using any sharing features of AI tools.OpenAI did not dispute the figure of around 100,000 indexed chats when contacted for comment. When asked for comment, OpenAI provided 404 Media with a statement from the companys chief information security officer CISO Dane Stuckey. We just removed a feature from [ChatGPT] that allowed users to make their conversations discoverable by search engines, such as Google. This was a short-lived experiment to help people discover useful conversations. Interactions with ChatGPT are private by default. Users can enable the share feature, which moves their interactions to a publicly accessible page, so the user can send a copy of the conversation to others if they wish. Because this page is public Google is able to index them.The share feature creates a predictably formatted link which allowed people to search Google for the indexed material. As Fast Company noted in its report, it is not clear if ChatGPT users understood they were making their chat publicly available. In response to some user chats being available on search engines, OpenAI removed that feature.Ultimately we think this feature introduced too many opportunities for folks to accidentally share things they didn't intend to, so we're removing the option. We're also working to remove indexed content from the relevant search engines. This change is rolling out to all users through tomorrow morning. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is urgently looking for a company to help it dominate digital media channels with advertisements in an attempt to recruit 14,050 more personnel, according to U.S. government contracting records reviewed by 404 Media. The move, which ICE wants to touch everything from social media ads to those played on popular streaming services like Hulu and HBO Max, is especially targeted towards Gen Z, according to the documents.The push for recruitment advertising is the latest sign that ICE is trying to aggressively expand after receiving a new budget allocation of tens of billions of dollars, and comes alongside the agency building a nationwide network of migrant tent camps. If the recruitment drive is successful, it would nearly double ICEs number of personnel.ICE has an immediate need to begin recruitment efforts and requires specialized commercial advertising experience, established infrastructure, and qualified personnel to activate without delay, the request for information (RFI) posted online reads. An RFI is often the first step in the government purchasing technology or services, in which it asks relevant companies to submit details on what they can offer the agency and for how much. The RFI adds This effort ties to a broader national launch and awareness saturation initiative aimed at dominating both digital and traditional media channels with urgent, compelling recruitment messages.Specifically, ICE wants the eventual contractor to find platforms with the highest potential for reaching recruits, including YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, LinkedIn, and X, according to the documents. Wikipedia editors just adopted a new policy to help them deal with the slew of AI-generated articles flooding the online encyclopedia. The new policy, which gives an administrator the authority to quickly delete an AI-generated article that meets a certain criteria, isnt only important to Wikipedia, but also an important example for how to deal with the growing AI slop problem from a platform that has so far managed to withstand various forms of enshittification that have plagued the rest of the internet.Wikipedia is maintained by a global, collaborative community of volunteer contributors and editors, and part of the reason it remains a reliable source of information is that this community takes a lot of time to discuss, deliberate, and argue about everything that happens on the platform, be it changes to individual articles or the policies that govern how those changes are made. It is normal for entire Wikipedia articles to be deleted, but the main process for deletion usually requires a week-long discussion phase during which Wikipedians try to come to consensus on whether to delete the article.However, in order to deal with common problems that clearly violate Wikipedias policies, Wikipedia also has a speedy deletion process, where one person flags an article, an administrator checks if it meets certain conditions, and then deletes the article without the discussion period.For example, articles composed entirely of gibberish, meaningless text, or what Wikipedia calls patent nonsense, can be flagged for speedy deletion. The same is true for articles that are just advertisements with no encyclopedic value. If someone flags an article for deletion because it is most likely not notable, that is a more subjective evaluation that requires a full discussion.At the moment, most articles that Wikipedia editors flag as being AI-generated fall into the latter category because editors cant be absolutely certain that they were AI-generated. Ilyas Lebleu, a founding member of WikiProject AI Cleanup and an editor that contributed some critical language in the recently adopted policy on AI generated articles and speedy deletion, told me that this is why previous proposals on regulating AI generated articles on Wikipedia have struggled.While it can be easy to spot hints that something is AI-generated (wording choices, em-dashes, bullet lists with bolded headers, ...), these tells are usually not so clear-cut, and we don't want to mistakenly delete something just because it sounds like AI, Lebleu told me in an email. In general, the rise of easy-to-generate AI content has been described as an existential threat to Wikipedia: as our processes are geared towards (often long) discussions and consensus-building, the ability to quickly generate a lot of bogus content is problematic if we don't have a way to delete it just as quickly. Of course, AI content is not uniquely bad, and humans are perfectly capable of writing bad content too, but certainly not at the same rate. Our tools were made for a completely different scale.The solution Wikipedians came up with is to allow the speedy deletion of clearly AI-generated articles that broadly meet two conditions. The first is if the article includes communication intended for the user. This refers to language in the article that is clearly an LLM responding to a user prompt, like "Here is your Wikipedia article on, Up to my last training update , and "as a large language model. This is a clear tell that the article was generated by an LLM, and a method weve previously used to identify AI-generated social media posts and scientific papers.Lebleu, who told me theyve seen these tells quite a few times, said that more importantly, they indicate the user hasnt even read the article theyre submitting.If the user hasn't checked for these basic things, we can safely assume that they haven't reviewed anything of what they copy-pasted, and that it is about as useful as white noise, they said.The other condition that would make an AI-generated article eligible for speedy deletion is if its citations are clearly wrong, another type of error LLMs are prone to. This can include both the inclusion of external links for books, articles, or scientific papers that dont exist and dont resolve, or links that lead to completely unrelated content. Wikipedia's new policy gives the example of a paper on a beetle species being cited for a computer science article.Lebleu said that speedy deletion is a band-aid that can take care of the most obvious cases and that the AI problem will persist as they see a lot more AI-generated content that doesnt meet these new conditions for speedy deletion. And I take that as an invitation to prove that Im faster than they are, he says.Originally from Australia, Hoskins knew early on he was different or actually similar to his two brothers.At six or seven, I insisted on everyone calling me Charlie, and I dressed up just like them, and I wanted to do the things that all the boys were doing in school. In Australia, masculinity is very, like, blokey in a way that I dont really relate to, he says. Having two brothers, I know that my masculinity is definitely very different to both of them. My younger brother plays rugby, and so his masculinity is very gym-bro, sinking pints with his friends at the pub after rugby games. And Im like, thats nice, but its not really how I relate to masculinity at all.Hoskins says his idea of masculinity centers on his self-knowledge about his identity as a trans man. He doesnt really feel either the need or the desire to fit into traditional forms of masculinity, whatever that kind of looks like he says. But even in a liberal enclave like Columbia, Hoskins version of masculinity has run up against more traditional ideas about the concept.I had a really terrible experience when I just started at Columbia and was still pretty femme-presenting with the president of the Columbia Road Runners being surprised when I was in the same corral as him at a race, Hoskins says. And its like, Those two are both genetic things, so I dont know why you would think that,' he says.When I dont come out to someone, its like, Oh, you tricked me. Oh, youre lying to me. No, its not about that. Its for my safety. You just dont understand, because youre more privileged than I am, right?In his day-to-day life living in the very conservative state or Iowa, he says hes definitely not as open about being trans, just for his safety.Men also always have to ask me the most disgusting questions, and not in an educational way, but more like they want to be better than me.How much can you bench press? is among the least offensive queries.Men behaving badly have also reached into both Reeves friendships and his qualifications for American Ninja Warrior.One gym friend, jealous that Reeves advanced on the show, lashed out, telling him, You only got on the show because youre trans, and outing me to everyone. We were really, really good friends. Im kind of sad and kind of confused how he just turned on me because of that, but thats toxic masculinity for you, thats ego for you, thats thinking that youre better than someone. The runners highFor both athletes, coming to grips with other mens egos counts as one more challenge among many in their transition to manhood. But grappling with it pales in comparison to the euphoria their transition has granted them.Hoskins likened his euphoria to the runners high, the feeling of elation, relaxation, reduced anxiety, and increased pain tolerance caused by endorphins during prolonged exercise.I remember the first time I went running after Id had top surgery, and it was like runners high times a million. It felt so good to be running, which is a sport that I love, with a body that felt like my own in a way that it hadnt ever felt before.When you run, you have such a control over your body, he continues. And theres such a rush that comes with that. And I think that when you transition, you have moments of gender euphoria that feel very similar to that runners high, like you were doing something for yourself and youre having the best time enjoying it.Reeves agrees that sports supercharged the euphoria that began with his transition. Sports just obviously helps with mental health, and it helps you look good and feel good, both physically and mentally, he says.The more I run, the more I do push-ups, pull-ups, develop a chest like, a masculine chest just doing a good workout when I feel like Im jacked, its made me more confident in my gender identity, and thats when you feel euphoric in your body.While Reeves and Hoskins both excelled in sports as children, that feeling of euphoria associated with sports alone eluded them. Hoskins says that every Australian child igrows up playing sports, but he had never been the best at soccer because of his terrible hand-eye coordination. However, he began running and gradually improved at track events, eventually representing his state in national competition.It was a really great time to be a girl and running, he says. There were so many phenomenal female athletes at the moment, and it was like, Yeah, its really cool to kind of be a part of that, right?But Hoskins says his ability in girls sports was at odds with something deeper.Charlie Hoskins | Charlie Hoskins I always felt kind of separated and out of place among the other girls that I was competing against, Hoskins says. I always kind of had issues with my body, and I never really knew why. Like, I wasnt the image of a female runner, which Id say is taller and skinnier and whatever. And then when I hit puberty, it became more complicated. But I was like, Oh, Im just different.'Incongruously, it was Hoskins talent for girls sports that led him to realize that his gender didnt align with his body.I started having these realizations like, oh no, I really was competing against female athletes, but I didnt feel like a girl. I just didnt know that thats what it was, he says.Like for Hoskins, Reeves talent for sports revealed a gender incongruity. As a kid, I was just into as much sports as I could be: flag football, soccer, cross country, track, basketball, Reeves says. What he stayed away from were sports that were highly segregated by gender.Track and cross country are gendered sports, because women do run with women, and men do run with men. But we all train together, he says. But scholastic volleyball is just a girls sport, you know? [Softball] is just a girls sport. So I tried to stay away from those. I probably would have played, but I just felt too dysphoric to play those kinds of sports.I actually wanted to do gymnastics, Reeves adds, but the leotards were a deal-breaker.While he officially knew something was up with his gender identity around age 14 thats when I started going through female puberty he kept it to himself.I just felt like an outcast, and I just felt like something was wrong. But I didnt know if it was like everyone feels this way as a young kid. The flip side of toxic masculinityWith time, introspection, and changes in circumstances Hoskins relocated to New York for college, while Reeves experienced homelessness after a falling out with his family both men came to embrace the differences sports and their gender dysphoria revealed, and they both started their transitions.Their relationship with masculinity is evolving.Something that Ive been more aware of now that Ive transitioned is, in being perceived as a man, how I can show up for women, Hoskins says.Hoskins says he has become more aware of how his masculine presentation impacts girls and womens feelings of safety, whether on the nighttime streets or in other spaces where they dont feel safe. He has begun taking a more protective role with his female friends because now I present in a way that affords some kind of privilege to me.Its the flip side of the toxic masculinity that Hoskins deplores, and evidence trans men can choose to define masculinity however they choose.Asked to define what kind of man he is, Hoskins says, I consider myself to be a very chill, nerdy, outdoorsy guy. I love staying at home and reading. I like going hiking. I like being around my friends and not taking life too seriously.My masculinity, says Hoskins, is more fluid than the conventional kind of thing.Hoskins lean into chill contrasts with Reeves very public role representing trans men on the national stage that American Ninja Warrior affords him.Im proud to be on American Ninja Warrior, and I love going on TikTok Live and stuff. Im getting so many comments from trans youth, and also moms commenting like, Youre an inspiration. Youre really helping my kid feel more confident in their body and about who they are, and now theyre inspired to become whatever they want.' Transgender is a label, but its not holding us back, Reeves says. It doesnt make us weak. It actually, if you think about it, can make you stronger.Like I said, Im in touch with my feminine side, Reeves adds. Im a very emotional guy, and a lot of cis men will think that that is weakness. The state of Florida is suing some of the biggest porn platforms on the internet, accusing them of not complying with the states law that requires adult sites to verify that visitors are over the age of 18.The lawsuit, brought by Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier, is against the companies that own popular porn platforms including XVideos, XNXX, Bang Bros and Girls Gone Wild, and the adult advertising network TrafficFactory.com.Several of these platforms are owned by companies that are based outside of the U.S.Uthmeier alleges that the companies are violating both HB3 and the Florida Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act.On January 1, Florida joined 19 other states that require adult websites to verify users ages. Twenty-nine states currently have nearly identical legislation enacted for porn sites, or have bills pending. Age verification legislation has failed in eight other states.Multiple porn companies are flagrantly breaking Floridas age verification law by exposing children to harmful, explicit content. As a father of young children, and as Attorney General, this is completely unacceptable, Uthmeier said in a press release about the lawsuit. We are taking legal action against these online pornographers who are willfully preying on the innocence of children for their financial gain.The Free Speech Coalition along with several co-plaintiffs, including the sex education platform O.school, sexual wellness retailer Adam & Eve, adult fan platform JustFor.Fans, and Florida attorney Barry Chase filed a challenge to Floridas law earlier this month. Gay male model Donald Zieben-Hood has been arrested after his fitness trainer husband was found dead with multiple stab wounds.Zieben-Hood was arrested on August 3 and charged with burglary, criminal contempt of court, and weapons possession in connection with the death of his husband, Jacob Zieben-Hood, who was found dead in their New York City apartment, NBC 4 New York reported.Jacob, a 34-year-old personal trainer, was found slumped over a toilet in their Harlem home with multiple stab wounds across his body, per the outlet. He was discovered with a gash on his head, several wounds to the back of his leg, including one that penetrated the muscle, but a medical examiner has yet to determine the cause of death.Jacob was pronounced dead at the scene after his husband called 911.When the police arrived at the scene, Donald had three cuts on his arm with required stitches and alleged that Jacob had attacked him with a knife, but he told the 911 operator that he was worried he might be arrested for violating the protective order that Jacob had against him.However, according to prosecutors, Jacobs dad said he got a call from his son where he could hear Donald yelling at Jacob and calling him names, People reports. Donald claims he fell asleep after the argument and then woke up around 4 a.m. to find Jacob dead. But prosecutors allege that Donald cut Jacob with a knife before calling 911. The couple had a history of domestic abuse dating back to 2022.Donald has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him and will return to court on August 7. Officials are investigating the incident as a homicide, but Donald has not been charged with the death of his estranged husband.
