APNEWS.COMBy the numbers: US thrashed military targets in Iran, but some capabilities remainWorkers remove debris at Tehran's Sharif University of Technology complex that Iranian authorities say was hit early Monday by a U.S.-Israeli strike, in Tehran, Iran, Monday, April 6, 2026. (AP Photo/Francisco Seco)2026-04-10T10:30:20Z WASHINGTON (AP) Since the ceasefire between Iran and the U.S. was announced, leaders in President Donald Trumps administration have been quick to say Iranian military and arms capacity have been all but wiped out during weeks of fighting. But there is also an acknowledgment that Tehran retains some capabilities, whether to strike back or defend itself.Gen. Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, this week said the U.S. military has hit more than 13,000 targets. He listed high percentages for attacks or destruction to Irans air defenses, navy and weapons factories. However, the totals stop short of Irans military capabilities being decimated as the Republican president has asserted.Independent data from Armed Conflict Location & Event Data, a U.S.-based group that tracks conflicts around the world, shows Iranian strikes persisted at a relatively steady and uninterrupted pace since the war began Feb. 28 through Wednesday.Heres a look at what the U.S. says has been targeted, has been degraded or remains from Iran, by the numbers: About 80% of Irans air defense systems destroyedCaine told reporters Wednesday at the Pentagon that the U.S. has struck more than 1,500 air defense targets, more than 450 ballistic missile storage facilities and 800 one-way attack drone storage facilities. He said, All of these systems are gone.Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth similarly claimed that Iran no longer has an air defense and that we own their skies before conceding soon afterward that Iran can still shoot we know that. Hegseth later elaborated, saying that while the Iranians may have a system here or there, they no longer had an air defense system thats capable of defending their skies. Neither Caine nor Hegseth said what the remaining 20% of Irans air defenses looked like or which parts of the country have the ability to carry out the sporadic fire they described. Read More Caine offered no new details about what kind of weapon the Iranians used to shoot down a U.S. F-15E Strike Eagle last week. It was the first time an American military jet was shot down during the war, showing Tehrans continued ability to hit back despite assertions from the Trump administration.Trump described it on Monday as a handheld shoulder missile, heat-seeking missile. More than 90% of Irans regular Navy fleet sunkWhite House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters Wednesday that the Iranian navy was completely annihilated. While 150 Iranian ships are at the bottom of the ocean, Caine said, only half the paramilitary Revolutionary Guards small attack boats ships the government used to swarm and harass warships and merchants in the Strait of Hormuz have been sunk.Caine also said that after more than 700 strikes, the military believed it has destroyed more than 95% of Irans naval mines. Since the U.S. has not said how large Irans stockpile was before the war, its unknown how many naval mines make up the remaining 5%. Semiofficial news agencies in Iran published a chart Thursday suggesting the Revolutionary Guard put sea mines into the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial trade route for oil, during the war.The message is likely designed to be a pressure tactic as Iran, Israel and the United States head into negotiations this weekend in Pakistan. Independent analysts say they have seen no change in merchant traffic through the strait since the tenuous ceasefire began this week. About 90% of Irans weapons factories attackedCaine said Wednesday that the military destroyed Irans defense industrial base while pointing to the fact that the U.S. and allies attacked approximately 90% of their weapons factories. He also said, nearly 80% of Irans nuclear industrial base was hit, further degrading their attempts to attain a nuclear weapon. While he noted that Iran was no longer able to produce certain components like solid rocket motors, he stopped short of saying that Iran could not eventually rebuild or get weapons in other ways or that the factories attacked had actually been destroyed or rendered unusable.Trump acknowledged this possibility when he warned countries against arming Iran.A Country supplying Military Weapons to Iran will be immediately tariffed, on any and all goods sold to the United States of America, 50%, effective immediately, Trump said in a social media post on Wednesday. More than 90% interception rate in IsraelMeanwhile, Israels military pointed to how many drones or missiles it has been able to stop from landing. It said it had an interception rate of more than 90% through its aerial defense systems.Over the decades, Israel has developed a sophisticated system capable of detecting incoming fire and deploying only if a projectile is headed toward a population center or sensitive military or civilian infrastructure. Israeli leaders say the system isnt 100% guaranteed but credit it with preventing serious damage and countless casualties.___Associated Press writer Sam Mednick in Tel Aviv, Israel, contributed to this report.0 Kommentare 0 Geteilt 2 Ansichten 0 Bewertungen

APNEWS.COMHungarys election could end Orbns journey from liberal firebrand to far-right leaderFILE -Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban speaks during a panel discussion organised by publisher houses about 'Storm over Europe - the Ukraine war, the energy crisis and geopolitical challenges' in Berlin, Germany, Oct. 11, 2022. (AP Photo/Markus Schreiber), File)2026-04-10T11:34:43Z BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbn, the European Unions longest-serving leader and one of its biggest antagonists, has taken a long road from his early days as a liberal, anti-Soviet firebrand to the Russia-friendly nationalist admired by the global far-right today. After dominating Hungarian politics for more than two decades, the 62-year-old could suffer a defeat during Sundays elections which could bring his 16-year reign to a spectacular end. Most polls have him at a double-digit deficit despite a recent visit from U.S. Vice President JD Vance meant to boost his chances. Facing the center-right Tisza party and its popular leader, Pter Magyar, Orbn has deployed a barrage of disinformation and AI-generated smear ads, and warned voters that bankruptcy and all-out war would come to Hungary if he loses.Orbn, a symbol of the countrys burgeoning democracy in the 1990s, has resorted to tactics that would have shocked his early supporters, and likely his younger self. From liberal to nationalistBeloved by many older and more rural Hungarians and reviled by detractors, Orbn has emerged as the countrys most consequential leader since its transition to democracy at the end of the Cold War.Born in 1963, Orbn grew up in a modest household in rural Felcst, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) outside Budapest. A gifted student and avid soccer fan, he studied law and later went to Oxford to study political science under a scholarship awarded by a foundation run by George Soros the Hungarian-born financier that Orbn would later frame as the countrys most sinister bogeyman. In 1988, Orbn co-founded Fidesz, originally a liberal, anti-communist youth party. The following year as a 26-year-old law student, he gave a fiery speech before tens of thousands, demanding Soviet troops leave Hungary a bold move during the waning days of the Communist era. Read More After first entering parliament in 1990 as head of the Fidesz caucus, he became one of Europes youngest-ever prime ministers when he won a national election in 1998 at the age of 35. But as Hungarys political dynamics changed and other liberal parties emerged, he began steering Fidesz to the right, transforming it into a vehicle for increasingly nationalist conservatism. Many observers view the election in 2002, when he lost to Hungarys Socialist party, as a turning point in Orbns approach to power. Speaking to Fidesz members afterward, he set the agenda for major changes he would introduce once back in office.Weve only got to win once, but weve got to win big, he said. The Orbn eraIt took eight years of leading the opposition in parliament, but that big win finally came. Orbn rode discontent over the fallout from the 2008 global financial crisis, as well as scandal and mismanagement by the Socialist government, to return as prime minister in 2010. Fidesz won a two-thirds majority in parliament. It marked a turning point. With its overwhelming mandate, Fidesz set to work reshaping Hungary by unilaterally writing a new constitution, re-rigging the electoral system and stacking the courts.Meanwhile, Orbn began siphoning public contracts, largely financed by the European Union, into companies owned by loyalists. Those loyalists in turn bought up hundreds of media outlets and forced others into closure. By the end of the decade, it was estimated that Fidesz and its allies controlled up to 80% of Hungarys private media market.Using the power and resources of the state, Orbn also has transformed public media into a mouthpiece for his party, and spent billions on state-funded communication billboards, ads and letters to households to boost his narratives. Media watchdog Reporters Without Borders has called him a press freedom predator.Despite the EU and international watchdogs sounding the alarm the European Parliament declared Hungary an electoral autocracy in 2022 Orbns supporters praise him as a defender of Christian values and national sovereignty in the face of globalization, mass migration and what he describes as an oppressive EU. Appearing to revel in disrupting EU decision making, Orbn built border fences and enacted harsh immigration and asylum policies, casting migrants and refugees as part of a globalist ploy to replace Europes white population. He told a party gathering in Romania in 2022 that we do not want to become peoples of mixed-race. A friend of Trump and PutinOrbns government has frequently clashed with Brussels over corruption, press freedom, judicial independence and anti-LGBTQ+ legislation. More recently, it has prevented EU efforts to support Ukraine and sanction Russia over its full-scale invasion. The bloc has frozen billions in funding to Hungary over rule-of-law concerns. In response, Orbn has campaigned heavily against the EU, comparing it to the Soviet Union, which had dominated Hungary for over four decades.Orbn also has cultivated close ties with like-minded leaders including U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Hes made common cause with euroskeptic, far-right parties, predicting a patriotic takeover of EU institutions. His pursuit of a foreign policy at odds with the Western consensus has drawn accusations that he is acting to benefit Moscow. As the Hungarian election approaches, media reports have suggested Russian secret services were meddling to tip Sundays vote in Orbns favor, something Russia denied. Other reports showed Orbns foreign minister frequently shared sensitive details on closed-door EU meetings with his Russian counterpart.Orbns election opponent, Magyar, has seized on the prime ministers drift toward Moscow, with supporters shouting at his rallies: Russians go home!Magyar, whose victory is still far from assured, calls Sundays election a referendum on whether Hungary continues deeper into autocracy or retakes its place among Europes democratic societies. APNEWS.COMGaza marks 6 months of a ceasefire that may offer lessons for the Iran warPalestinians walk through a flooded area in a temporary tent camp after heavy rainfall in Gaza City, Thursday, March 26, 2026 (AP Photo/Jehad Alshrafi)2026-04-10T08:03:45Z DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) Friday marks six months since Gazas ceasefire deal took effect, a milestone largely lost in the confusion over the new and even more fragile ceasefire in the Iran war.The ravaged Palestinian territory of 2 million people has seen the most intense fighting stop between Israeli forces and Hamas-led militants. But most of the ceasefire work remains to be done, from disarming Hamas and ending its two-decade rule to deploying an international stabilization force and beginning vast reconstruction. Gaza residents are in limbo, with limited aid entering through a single, Israeli-controlled border post.Such challenges could represent whats to come in the latest war, as U.S. President Donald Trumps approach to peacemaking appears to be stopping bombardment and leaving the bigger picture for others to work out.Whether Trump can force through that kind of deal on Iran, with more actors in play and global markets quivering at every statement, is yet to be seen. The Board of Peace goes quietFocusing on a deals details is crucial. Already the Iran wars two-week ceasefire has created deadly confusion over Lebanon as Israel insists the deal doesnt apply there and continues to attack the Iranian-backed Hezbollah, while Iran insists it does and threatens to upend the agreement. Israel made a surprise announcement Thursday authorizing direct negotiations with Lebanon, despite the lack of diplomatic ties. Not long ago, the U.S.-created and Trump-led Board of Peace kicked off with $7 billion in pledges and sweeping intentions of resolving not only Gaza but other conflicts that emerge around the world.Nine days after the boards initial meeting, the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran. The Board of Peace has not met again, and its still waiting for Hamas to respond to its proposal on disarming, a major concession and perhaps the hardest step. Hamas charter calls for destroying Israel. A U.S. official said Hamas has not been given a definite deadline to respond to the proposal but added that patience is not unlimited. The official was not authorized to comment publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity. Read More The lack of a deadline can weaken pressure to act. Meanwhile, diplomacy is busy putting out different flames.Board of Peace director Nickolay Mladenov told the U.N. Security Council last month that the world should not lose sight of Gaza as a new war flared. The choice in Gaza is between a renewed war, or a new beginning; the status quo, or a better future, he added. There is no third option. Its as if theres no ceasefire at allPalestinians might suggest a third option: neglect.Six months into the Gaza ceasefire that took effect on Oct. 10, little beyond the largely silenced explosions has changed.Vast tent camps house most of the territorys population. Other residents shelter in damaged apartment buildings. Health workers and other humanitarian workers say there has been little progress in the expected surge of medical supplies and other aid. Sign up for Morning Wire: Our flagship newsletter breaks down the biggest headlines of the day. Email address Sign up By checking this box, you agree to AP's Terms of Use and acknowledge that AP may collect and use your data pursuant to our Privacy Policy. The U.S. 20-point ceasefire plan for Gaza is largely failing on the humanitarian front, five international aid groups said in a scorecard released Thursday. They said conditions have deteriorated further in Gaza since the Iran war began. During the first two weeks of March 2026, trucks entering Gaza declined by 80%, and the price of basic goods increased dramatically, they said. Medical evacuations have stalled.Palestinians expressed fading hopes for any immediate improvement in their lives. There is pollution and disease. Its as if theres no ceasefire at all, said Maysa Abu Jedian, a displaced woman from Beit Lahiya. The war is still ongoing and life is still terrible as it is, said Eyad Abu Dagga, also sheltering in a camp in Khan Younis.Tents rippled in the breeze, and children played on the sand against a backdrop of shattered buildings. While the heaviest fighting has subsided, Israeli forces have carried out airstrikes and fired on Palestinians near military-held zones. Militants have carried out shooting attacks on troops, and Israel has said its strikes are in response to that and other ceasefire violations. As of Thursday, Israeli attacks have killed 738 people in the six months since the ceasefire, according to Gazas Health Ministry. The ministry, part of the Hamas-led government, maintains detailed casualty records that are seen as generally reliable by U.N. agencies and independent experts. It does not give a breakdown of civilians and militants.Overall, the ministry says 72,317 Palestinians had been killed since the war in Gaza began with the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack on Israel.Sustained diplomatic pressure at the highest levelsUnwavering focus on Gaza, once at the heart of a passionate international outcry, has been lost with the rise of a new regional war. That, too, has decreased pressure for progress on the ceasefire. The humanitarian groups scorecard notes that any forward movement on aid issues in the Palestinian territory has generally required sustained diplomatic pressure at the highest levels, particularly from the United States. That pressure, however, has not been applied consistently or at the scale needed to secure full implementation. The Trump administration is not the only player to be distracted. The entire Middle East, including key Gaza mediators Egypt and Qatar, now focuses on Iran and that wars effects on their economies. With the added uncertainty over Israels renewed war with Hezbollah in Lebanon, there could be even less interest from countries to contribute troops to a Gaza stabilization force. One of the few confirmed troop contributors, Indonesia, already has seen three of its peacekeepers in southern Lebanon killed in recent days.___Anna reported from Lowville, New York. APNEWS.COMMcIlroy atop Masters leaderboard again, while DeChambeau and Rahm will have to fight to make the cutRory McIlroy, of Northern Ireland, hits from the fairway on the 15th hole during the first round of the Masters golf tournament at the Augusta National Golf Club, Thursday, April 9, 2026, in Augusta, Ga. (AP Photo/David J. Phillip)2026-04-10T10:00:07Z AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) Defending champion Rory McIlroy picked up where he left off a year ago.For a couple other big names at the Masters, just making the cut is no guarantee.McIlroy and Sam Burns enter Fridays second round tied for first after opening with 5-under 67s at Augusta National. Those within striking distance include past champions Patrick Reed and Scottie Scheffler, plus a few others who have come close here in Justin Rose, Jason Day, Shane Lowry and Xander Schauffele.Further back, a couple LIV Golf stars arent yet certain of making the weekend. Bryson DeChambeau shot 76 on Thursday, and Jon Rahm was two shots worse. Its a hard golf course, Rahm said. Some of the players might have been able to manage a respectable round, but when you have no feel with the swing whatsoever, its just not an easy one.McIlroy shot one of his best first rounds ever at the Masters, seemingly unburdened by the pressure of the years first major after finally winning it last year to complete the career grand slam. Afterward, however, he said gratefully that he still felt some nerves. I was anxious just like I always am on that first tee. Its the first round of major season, the first round of the 16 most important rounds of the year, McIlroy said. Im thankful that I felt the same as I always have. I think it would be worrisome if I didnt feel that way because it definitely still means something to me. Burns was at 5 under, and that matched his performance on the four par 5s: an eagle and three birdies. Read More By the end of Thursday, there were some ominous signs, including a dry forecast that could toughen up Augusta National. Aside from McIlroy and Burns, only three players shot in the 60s. The par-5 15th hole yielded the fourth-most birdies (21) on day one, but it was also the site of some of the days biggest blowups. Danny Willett, Fred Couples and Robert MacIntyre made quadruple bogeys there, and Reeds second shot went so far past the green it ended up in the pond thats famously part of the par-3 16th. With that hole playing a little bit downwind, even though it wasnt much wind, you had to land it a pace or two on the green at the most if you wanted to hold it with your second shot, Scheffler said. Stuff can happen quick around this place, and its really hard.Scheffler (70) was 3 under through three but didnt make another birdie the rest of the day. Hes tied with Rose, Schauffele and Lowry, all of whom have finished in the top three at Augusta National but have never won.Reed, Day and Kurt Kitayama shot 69.DeChambeau, Rahm, Viktor Hovland (75) and Patrick Cantlay (77) better get moving if theyre going to be relevant this weekend. MacIntyre (80) is in even worse shape after fuming through a back nine in which he sent an eagle putt clear off the green on No. 13 and shot a nine on 15.___AP golf: https://apnews.com/hub/golf0 Kommentare 0 Geteilt 1 Ansichten 0 Bewertungen

APNEWS.COMGas price spike pushes up inflation by most in four years in MarchPantry staples, including infant formula and dairy products, are sold at a market serving the Central American immigrant community in the Westlake/Pico Union area of Los Angeles, Tuesday, April 7, 2026. (AP Photo/Damian Dovarganes)2026-04-10T04:01:36Z WASHINGTON (AP) The largest monthly jump in gas prices in six decades caused a sharp spike in inflation in March, creating major challenges for the inflation-fighters at the Federal Reserve and heightening the political challenges of rising costs for the White House.Consumer prices rose 3.3% in March from a year earlier, the Labor Department said Friday, up sharply from just 2.4% in February. On a monthly basis, prices rose 0.9% in March from February, the largest such increase in nearly four years.Excluding the volatile food and energy categories, core prices rose 2.6% in March from a year earlier, up from 2.5% in February. But last month core prices rose a modest 0.2%, suggesting that the gas price shock hasnt yet spread to many other categories. The gas price shock stemming from the Iran war has shifted inflations trajectory, from a slow, gradual decline to a sharp increase further away from the Feds 2% target. As a result, the central bank will almost certainly postpone any cut in interest rates for months. Gas prices are also a highly visible cost that has outsize impacts on consumer confidence and political sentiment. THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. APs earlier story follows below. WASHINGTON (AP) Soaring gas prices are expected to produce a spike in inflation when the government reports consumer prices for March on Friday, likely unnerving the inflation fighters at the Federal Reserve and heightening the political challenges of rising costs for the White House. Read More Inflation probably rose to 3.4% in March compared with a year ago, economists estimate, which would be a sharp increase from Februarys 2.4% increase. On a monthly basis, prices are forecast to have risen 0.9% in March from the previous month, according to a survey of economists by data provider FactSet. That would be largest monthly increase since 2022. Until now there had been a slight moderating trend in inflation since last fall. A reading of 3.4% would be the highest in nearly two years, and is far above the Feds 2% target. There is going to be a headline sticker shock here, said Michael Metcalfe, head of macro strategy at State Street, which produces PriceStats, a measure of inflation culled from millions of online prices. Their data suggests inflation could leap by 1.5% just in March from February.Excluding the volatile food and energy categories, core prices are projected to have risen 2.7% in March from a year earlier, up from 2.5% in February. From February to March, core prices are expected to have risen 0.3%, a faster pace than is consistent with the Feds target. Gas prices soared about 20% in March, a move that saps consumers ability to spend on other goods and services and as a result could also slow economic growth. At least in the short run, many Americans can only make limited changes to their daily driving habits, which are largely determined by where they live, shop, and work. As a result, most people will pay higher prices for gas, and potentially cut back elsewhere. Sign up for Morning Wire: Our flagship newsletter breaks down the biggest headlines of the day. Email address Sign up By checking this box, you agree to AP's Terms of Use and acknowledge that AP may collect and use your data pursuant to our Privacy Policy. Gas prices averaged $4.17 a gallon nationwide Thursday, up 69 cents from a month ago. The big question for consumers and the economy is whether the surge in oil and gas prices will create a sustained, broader inflation shock, similar to what occurred in the aftermath of the pandemic in 2021-2022. Inflation reached a peak of 9.1% in June 2022, as COVID-19 snarled supply chains and several rounds of stimulus checks pushed up consumer demand. Prices soared for groceries, furniture, restaurant meals and many other goods and services. This time, economists say the job market and consumer spending are weaker, and there are no large government stimulus checks being issued to spur demand. The unemployment rate is low, at 4.3%, but companies arent scrambling to hire the way they were when the economy emerged from the pandemic, which led many firms to offer sharp pay increases to attract and keep workers. Rapid pay increases and solid income growth helped consumers weather the higher prices that resulted from the pandemics supply chain disruptions, and fueled spikes in demand that led many companies to raise prices further. Thats where this really differs, is that we arent seeing anywhere near the strength of demand, Alan Detmeister, an economist at UBS, said. In 2021 and 2022, income growth was increasing really strongly. We arent seeing that now, he added. Detmeister thinks the better comparison will likely be to 1990-91, when higher oil and gas prices stemming from Iraqs invasion of Kuwait contributed to a recession, but didnt lead to a jump in inflation, in part because of weaker consumer spending. The gas price spikes impact on inflation is, in some ways, similar to President Donald Trumps tariffs, in that their effect will depend largely on the size and duration of the increase. For now, economists expect that in March and April the impact will largely be confined to energy-intensive industries, such as airlines, package delivery services and public transportation. Overall, the U.S. economy is much less dependent on oil and gas than it was in previous decades. Still, the large jump in inflation which is almost certain to continue for several months has already shifted the debate at the Federal Reserve, which began the year expecting to cut its key interest rate at least a couple of times. But a growing number of Fed officials are now willing to consider hiking rates instead if core inflation doesnt cool noticeably. Most officials are almost certain to support keeping the Feds key interest rate unchanged in the coming months, at about 3.6%, as they evaluate how the economy evolves. Investors now dont expect the Fed to cut rates until late 2027.Higher gas prices are tricky for the Fed because they can also slow growth by weighing on consumer spending, potentially causing layoffs. The Fed would typically cut its rate to encourage more spending if unemployment rises, while it raises rates to combat inflation. More expensive oil and gas will also likely lift grocery prices, creating more pain for consumers who have already absorbed a roughly 25% jump in food costs since the pandemic. Nearly all groceries are shipped by diesel-fueled trucks, and diesel fuel prices have risen even more than those for regular gas. Still, analysts dont expect food prices to accelerate for another month or two. CHRISTOPHER RUGABER Rugaber has covered the Federal Reserve and the U.S. economy for the AP for 16 years.
