Thierry Henry and Presnel Kimpembe poised to present Champions League trophy before PSG v Arsenal final
Thierry Henry and Presnel Kimpembe poised to present Champions League trophy before PSG v Arsenal finalArsenal icon Thierry Henry and PSG cult hero Presnel Kimpembe are poised to take the UEFA Champions League trophy to the pitch before Saturday’s Champions League final between Les Pariesiens and the Gunners, Le Parisien understands. Traditionally, two former players of the two finalists present the trophy before the final. Last year, Argentine duo Javier Pastore and Javier Zanetti delivered Europe’s most coveted trophy before PSG’s thrashing of Inter Milan in Munich.Kimpembe, who joined Qatar SC last summer on the back of PSG’s maiden Champions League title, has confirmed to Le Parisien that he has been chosen by his formative club to deliver the trophy. “It’s a great honor to represent Paris Saint-Germain in this Champions League final. I hope it’ll bring luck to the team and to all Parisian supporters.”His Arsenal counterpart in Budapest could be another World Cup winner for France. The outlet understands that none other than Thierry Henry is Arsenal’s favourite choice to deliver the Champions League trophy. However, his punditry role for CBS could prevent him from accepting the offer.GFFN | Bastien Cheval

US will need years to replenish stockpiles of advanced weapons used in Iran war, new analysis finds
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth testifies at a Senate Appropriations subcommittee on defense hearing on the budget request for the Department of Defense, Tuesday, May 12, 2026, in Washington. (AP Photo/Alex Brandon)2026-05-27T13:30:17Z WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. military contractors need at least three years to replenish stockpiles of three key weapons systems used heavily in the Iran war, according to an analysis released Wednesday, adding to concerns that American forces would have limited firepower in any future conflict with China. The weapons systems are Tomahawk cruise missiles, which are used to strike targets deep inside enemy territory, and Patriot and THAAD interceptors that defend against incoming missiles and drones. “The United States has enough munitions for any plausible scenario in the Iran war, but the depleted inventories have created a window of vulnerability for a potential Western Pacific conflict,” the Center for Strategic and International Studies said in its new report, provided to The Associated Press. “The time needed to rebuild those inventories has thus become a major concern.” China has a stated goal of ensuring its military is capable of taking Taiwan by force if necessary by 2027, which experts see as more aspirational than a hard deadline. But Chinese President Xi Jinping warned this month that if Washington mishandles its relations with the self-governing island, the U.S. and China could end up clashing or even in open conflict. Trump administration is boosting funding, but production takes timeThe analysis by the Washington think tank factors in the Republican Trump administration’s historic defense budget proposal of $1.5 trillion for 2027, which significantly accelerates spending on high-end munitions that began during the Democratic Biden administration. While there’s bipartisan agreement in Congress to boost inventories, “the problem today isn’t money; it’s time,” the report said. “It takes time to expand production capacity and to build these complex systems,” the report said, adding that the window of vulnerability will last “for several years until inventories return to their previous levels and another several years before they get to the levels that war planners desire.” Although munitions inventories are classified, CSIS said sufficient public information exists in Pentagon budget materials to estimate production timelines. Read More President Donald Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth have insisted the U.S. is capable of fighting any war. They have pushed defense contractors to speed up munitions production, with Hegseth telling lawmakers last month that military spending under Trump will help manufacturers double or even triple their capacities. Chief Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said in a statement that the military “has everything it needs to execute at the time and place of the President’s choosing.”“We have executed multiple successful operations across combatant commands while ensuring the U.S. military possesses a deep arsenal of capabilities to protect our people and our interests,” Parnell said. Some military experts have pushed back. Pentagon officials “knew the reality of our military stockpiles and hopefully told someone, ‘Hey, if we go to this fight, even in the most conservative estimates, we are drawing down our stockpiles to a critical level,’” said Virginia Burger, a senior defense policy analyst at the Project On Government Oversight watchdog group and a former Marine officer. Concerns about diminished stockpiles were a theme at recent congressional hearings. For Democrats, the munitions supply is a damning metric against the Iran war, which Trump launched without lawmakers’ approval. Some Republicans argue that the problem stems from the U.S. sending Patriot missile defense systems to Ukraine after Russia invaded in 2022, although several American allies use those systems. Share Share Facebook Copy Link copied Print Email X LinkedIn Bluesky Flipboard Pinterest Reddit Read More The roots of the predicament can be traced to the end of the Cold War, said Mark Cancian, a retired Marine colonel and senior adviser at CSIS who co-authored the study with research associate Chris H. Park. After the fall of the Soviet Union in late 1991, the U.S. assumed future wars would be short and regional with little need for large numbers of such high-end weapons, Cancian said in an interview. The Pentagon ordered relatively low numbers, assuming the military would not need many of them. Military contractors responded in kind, relying on a relatively small manufacturing footprint to build them. Russia’s war with Ukraine showed that wars could be protracted and require deep inventories of advanced weapons, Cancian said. At the same time, U.S. military strategists were war-gaming possible conflicts in the western Pacific.“The thinking started to change, but it just takes time to build inventories,” Cancian said, adding that part of the challenge is bringing up to speed a complicated web of supply chains and subcontractors that produce very novel components. President Joe Biden’s administration should get some credit for starting conversations with the defense industry, putting money into the industrial base and ramping up production, said Cancian, who oversaw acquisitions of military hardware at the Office of Management and Budget under Presidents George W. Bush, a Republican, and Barack Obama, a Democrat. “A lot of people in the Trump administration are inclined to say that everything was terrible until they arrived, and that’s not true,” Cancian said. “Now, it is true that the Trump administration really increased funding.” How long it will take to rebuild key stockpilesThe U.S. fired 1,000-plus Tomahawk missiles at Iran, and it could take until late 2030 to fully replenish the prewar inventory, CSIS estimates show.Fewer than 200 Tomahawks are made a year because of small orders in the past, the report says. However, manufacturer Raytheon has a goal of ramping up capacity to more than 1,000 per year.RTX, Raytheon’s parent company, declined to comment on the CSIS findings because it had not yet seen the report. But RTX pointed to investments of several billion dollars to boost production, including expanding facilities in Alabama and Arizona. For in-demand air defense systems, replacing as many as 290 THAAD, or Terminal High Altitude Area Defense, interceptors that shot down incoming Iranian drones and missiles could take until the end of 2029, CSIS estimates. Replenishing more than 1,000 Patriot interceptors should wrap up in mid-2029.Lockheed Martin is significantly boosting production of rounds for both systems, while deliveries of THAADs “were apparently re-sequenced to prioritize U.S. needs over those of allies and partners,” CSIS noted.“Patriot deliveries pose a dilemma for the United States because of the need to replenish its own inventories, help Ukraine defend against Russian missile attacks, and meet the needs of 17 other countries that use the interceptor,” the report said. Lockheed Martin said in a statement that it’s investing $9 billion through 2030 and “is already delivering tangible results to meet heightened munitions demand, including a new facility in Alabama announced last week along with more than 20 others across the United States.” In the meantime, CSIS said a potential conflict with China is “not all bleak,” with the U.S. military recently displaying its capabilities against Iran, Venezuela and the Houthi rebels in Yemen. “China is deeply aware that it has no recent combat experience and that it performed poorly in its last war — against Vietnam in 1979,” the report said. “That difference in experience may preserve deterrence until munitions inventories are restored.”

Uganda closes its border with Congo as cases of a rare Ebola type surge
A Muslim woman walks towards the prayer grounds at Sayo Muhamed School to perform Eid al-Adha prayers amid an Ebola outbreak in Bunia, Congo, Wednesday, May 27, 2026. (AP Photo/Moses Sawasawa)2026-05-27T13:53:42Z KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) — Ugandan authorities on Wednesday ordered the closure of the border with Congo “with immediate effect” as cases surge there of a rare type of Ebola and as others emerge at home.A local Ebola task force led by Vice President Jesca Alupo made the decision after a rise in Ugandan health workers exposed to the virus by Congolese patients who crossed the border before the outbreak was declared on May 15.“No country should close its borders or place any restrictions on travel and trade. Such measures are usually implemented out of fear and have no basis in science,” the World Health Organization said in its declaration of this outbreak as a public health emergency of international concern, while acknowledging that neighboring countries are at high risk. The WHO added: “They push the movement of people and goods to informal border crossings that are not monitored, thus increasing the chances of the spread of disease.” It said infected people or those who have been in contact with them should not undertake international travel unless it’s a medical evacuation. The border between Uganda and Congo is several hundred miles long and crossed by numerous footpaths beyond formal border posts. Health authorities in Congo are struggling to contain the outbreak that the WHO has said is outpacing them, after the rare Bundibugyo type of Ebola was confirmed weeks late as tests were carried out for a more common type. Read More The number of suspected Ebola cases in eastern Congo is nearing 1,000, with at least 220 suspected deaths. Congo’s health ministry on Tuesday said 101 cases have been confirmed, and they are looking into over 3,000 possible contacts.Challenges include the threat of armed groups in eastern Congo, a large number of displaced people and poor infrastructure.Uganda has reported seven cases of Ebola, including the first case of a 59-year-old man who died in Kampala, the capital, on May 14. While the Ebola case load in Uganda is not spiking, the number of locals exposed to infection via health workers has been rising.“They have families, and so the number has been increasing,” Dr. Diana Atwine, permanent secretary of the Ministry of Health, said of health workers.Travel across the Congo border will be authorized only in emergency cases, including for the Ebola response, cargo or security reasons, she said. She said she was dismayed to see some Ugandans forming crowds to celebrate Arsenal as British Premier League champion. The team has a large following in Uganda.“I don’t understand,” Atwine said, urging Ugandans to be vigilant, avoid shaking hands and use sanitizer.

‘Lobotomized’: Character.AI Is Showing What AI Enshittification Looks Like
Users of the chatbot app Character.ai have been melting down on Reddit and begging the company to stop messing with the app after a series of changes that users say has completely ruined the app. The feedback is so negative that I have never seen a community or user base so uniformly upset and so consistently aligned in its view.Character.ai is one of the most popular AI companion chatbot apps; it allows users to create virtual characters to chat with. Over the last few years, users have used the chatbots for companionship, to form romantic relationships, to entertain themselves, and to role-play. Like other popular chatbot apps, Character.ai has also been used for abuse and harassment, and the company is being sued both by the families of users who killed themselves after using Character.ai and by the state of Pennsylvania after AI characters on the platform claimed to be licensed medical professionals. In recent weeks, Character.ai, like other AI companies, has increased its usage restrictions for free users of the app, which highlights the fact that AI is very expensive to run. The app has also gotten rid of several AI models that users liked and has replaced them with a set called Pipsqueak 2; one user told me the new model feels “lobotomized” and generic and that it feels like the new model tends to narrate action but does not often participate in dialogue. The company has also put lots of ads in the app, is heavily promoting a new video feature that animates the AI character rather than traditional chatting, added new filters/content restrictions, and added invasive age verification.Looking at what’s happened to Character.ai is useful insofar as it shows the type of enshittification that is increasingly coming to AI tools across the entire sector and the associated user backlash. This is happening because of a mix of the unworkable economics of many AI apps and increased regulation on AI apps as they are accused of playing a part in the death of their users or being used for abuse. On the r/CharacterAI subreddit there are literally hundreds of posts about how useless Character.AI has become, and there are also separate subreddits called CharacterAIRevolution, CAIRevolution, Characterai_rebellion, characteraiventing, and CharacteraiResistance that are entirely dedicated to looking for alternatives to CharacterAI or pushing back against changes the company has made. Recent top posts on the CharacterAI subreddit, which is partially moderated by the creators of the app, include “Character ai is dead,” “CharacterAI, this is the single worst mistake you have EVER made,” “Anybody else quitting?,” “I’m no longer addicted, I guess,” “We did not enjoy the past updates AT ALL,” and “They finally shot themselves in the foot. RIP C.AI.” A “Feedback Megathread” on the PipSqueak 2 chat model, which was posted by Character.ai employees has 1,000 comments which are almost entirely negative; the top comment is “I HATE pipsqueak 2. It’s way over dramatic, I can’t stand it.” Other comments include “HOT. ASS. OH MY GOD THIS THING IS HOT ASSSS!!!,” “It honestly may be the worst chat style to exist on the platform,” “It’s the worst model yet,” “What I think about PipSqueak 2? IT FUCKING SUCKS, THAT’S WHAT,” and “Terrible compared to the models you got rid of. Thanks for nothing.” Many users have also pointed to an interview that Character.AI CEO Karandeep Anand gave to TIME, in which he said he lets his six-year-old daughter use the app and said “I’m willing to bet that we will build more compelling experiences, but if it means some users churn, then some users churn.” In a blog post announcing Pipsqueak 2, Anand acknowledged that it is getting difficult to continue running Character.AI for free users."I want to address the changes we've shipped recently that I know have been frustrating. We rolled out age restrictions to more regions, introduced usage limits on some features, and added more ad placements for free users. These all landed close together, and we know your experience took a hit. We hear you," he wrote. "All of this comes back to one thing: keeping Character.ai free and available to as many people as possible. We're a small team serving millions of users every month with no outside investors. Running AI at this scale, and maintaining our high safety standards for everyone globally, is not cheap."I messaged with six Character.AI users, all of whom have been using the app for several years and who said it has gotten noticeably worse in recent weeks. “PipSqueak 2 has been an absolute joke,” one user told me. “While I am someone who is desensitized to bad stories and writing, I can tell things are just off. If you swipe on a greetings message, you just get literal gibberish. And the fact that it’s the only model for non-paying users is also the ultimate disrespect.” Another user, who said they live in a war-torn area and use Character.AI to keep their mind off the “weight of endless nightmare, propaganda, and war,” told me that the old Character.AI models were “cheesy, teasy, and a bit weird from time to time. It understood jokes, irony, memes, media content,” they said. The changes “literally lobotomized Character.ai […] it became dull, and this was painful. All the soft kisses, messages, pats. My bots I wrote based on my own lore stopped responding. This hobby helped me a lot in total isolation, [and there are other users] stuck in a war, isolated by disability, vulnerable people […] but they ruined not just my hobby but my experience.” There have been numerous AI chat apps that have changed their business models, changed the underlying AI models, or have tweaked their product in a way that has made users upset. Famously, when OpenAI retired the GPT-4o model and replaced it with GPT-5, there was an entire user base who felt like their companion was ripped away. What we’re seeing with Character.ai now is more of the same, but it also highlights the fact that the companies making AI tools haven’t figured out how to make the economics of their products work, and they also don’t know how to make tools that don’t lead to harm. We have seen various AI products implement usage limits, increase prices, and roll back features because of the booming price of AI compute. We have also seen companies correctly attempt to make their products less harmful. But, in doing so, they often limit functionality or annoy their users. What’s happening with Character.ai isn’t particularly novel, but it does raise questions about whether products like these have any real future at all.

SDSU baseball: After 13-year drought, Jackrabbits finally going back to NCAA tournament
May 27—LINCOLN, Neb. — In the 20-plus years since South Dakota State elevated its athletic programs to Division I, virtually all of the Jackrabbit teams have enjoyed national success.Men's and women's basketball, softball, soccer, track and field, cross country, volleyball and wrestling have all been regulars in NCAA postseason, while, of course, the football team has won two FCS national championships. For the Jackrabbit baseball team, national success has been harder to come by.SDSU has been to the NCAA tournament just once in the Division I era, in 2013, which happened to be during the two-year window that perennial Summit League power Oral Roberts left the conference to play in the Southland. In 10 years under current coach Rob Bishop, the Jacks have had just two winning seasons and finished higher than third in the regular standings only once. And for most of this spring, it didn't look like the 2026 campaign would be different. SDSU took a 21-30 record into the conference tournament. Though they'd been competitive against Big Ten and Big 12 teams and played well in conference play, they'd gone 0-6 against Oral Roberts. And they were 0-19 against them all-time in conference tournament play. From outside the Jackrabbit clubhouse, there was little reason to think the Jacks posed much of a threat to the Golden Eagles, who were just three years removed from a stunning trip to the College World Series. But the Jacks punched ORU in the mouth in the tournament opener, then beat them in the winner-take-all championship. They're finally going back to the Big Dance, and this time their trip to the NCAAs comes with the satisfaction of knocking off the Eagles to get there. The Jacks (24-31) will face the Nebraska Cornhuskers on Friday at 3 p.m. in Lincoln.Jackrabbit baseball has had some proud moments in its 79-year history, but it was starved for some new ones, and this immediately moves towards the top of the list."The boys are pumped," said senior right-hander Ty Madison, whose durability out of the bullpen earned him Summit League tournament MVP honors. "It doesn't even feel real that it's happened. And it probably won't feel real until we get to practice in Lincoln on Thursday and play in the game on Friday. But the emotions have been overwhelming. Everyone's really excited."For Bishop, it's been a long time coming. A grad assistant at SDSU from 1998-99, the Jamestown alum came back to SDSU from Division II Montana State-Billings in 2017, replacing Dave Schrage.Bishop's teams have been competitive in the Summit League (122-121 in conference games during his tenure), but they've struggled to establish themselves as a power within the league like so many other SDSU teams have done.Being a cold weather program doesn't help, as SDSU typically played few home games until finally putting turf on Erv Huether Field in 2025. They've cycled through multiple pitching coaches and in recent years have lost a handful of their best players to the transfer portal.Three times the Jacks reached the Summit League tournament championship round under Bishop. They lost all three times. But Bishop kept plugging along and athletic director Justin Sell stayed patient with him. That patience appears to be paying off. The Jacks are finally going back to the NCAA tournament, and they're doing it with a team that's made up mostly of underclassmen. The starting lineup on the day they clinched their NCAA berth featured five sophomores, two juniors and two freshmen."I'm so happy for our six seniors, but the really exciting part to me is that we had zero seniors in our starting lineup," Bishop said. "We're sophomores, freshmen and juniors. And we have a lot of experience because a lot of those guys played last year. We're a really young team and I said the other day we're kind of young and dumb in the best possible way. Our guys have just played free and really enjoyed each others' success and had a lot of fun playing baseball together. I've really enjoyed coaching this group. Whatever it is we're doing, they're 100 percent engaged and locked in and having fun."The sophomore class of Owen Siegert, Nolan Grawe, Keagen Jirschele, Nic Werk, Dayton Franke and Drew McDowell has formed the backbone of the team.Grawe leads the team with a .315 average to go with seven homers and 49 RBI. Jirschele has been an ace with the glove at shortstop while posting a .374 OBP, while Siegert recently returned form injury and is hitting .353. McDowell leads the team with a 3.95 ERA.Junior slugger Luke Luskey ranked among the Summit League leaders in homers and RBI, and there are senior contributors.Luke Wrobleski leads the team with nine stolen bases and has driven in 30 runs, while Madison, Sam Schlecht, Matthew Werk, Jacob Sjuts and Will Kent have provided leadership to the pitching staff.Schlecht delivered arguably the biggest outing of his Jackrabbit career in the opener of the Summit League tournament, shutting down the Eagles to put SDSU in the tournament driver's seat. He'll likely get the ball Friday against Nebraska.SDSU's team ERA is north of seven for the season, but they looked like a different group in the conference tournament, posting a 3.00 ERA in the four games in Minneapolis."I think the biggest thing was really just attacking hitters and getting after them and playing free," said Schlecht, who has a 5.88 ERA but in 72 innings has struck out 70 and walked 21 while allowing a .286 opponent's average. "I mean, we went into it as the four seed knowing we had nothing to lose and we really just got after it, got after hitters and got ahead and it put us in a position with a chance to win. I've wanted to go to a regional since I started playing college baseball. So it's pretty cool that me and the rest of the seniors get to do it in our last chance."Did they surprise themselves? The Jacks were huge underdogs, and that 0-19 tourney record against the Eagles was awfully daunting. Then again, there were underlying signs all year that the Jacks were better than their record, from playing well against major conference foes to winning the majority of their conference series' to their youth enabling them to make pronounced progress and improvements during the season."We all knew what we were capable of," Madison said. "We played a really tough schedule and we played some really good teams. We all knew we could play a really good brand of baseball, and we got hot at the right time."Now comes the fun part. The Jacks' draw is about as interesting as they could have asked for. They're in a group with three power conference bluebloods, all ranked in the Top 25 — Nebraska, Arizona State and Ole Miss — the latter two of whom they've never played before. SDSU plays Nebraska regularly — losing to them 5-4 in March and beating them in 2024 and 2025. And being just a few hours down I-29 means travel will be easy for them and for SDSU fans.Still, Bishop knows playing the Cornhuskers — or the Sun Devils or Runnin' Rebels — in a regional is a lot different than playing a Big Ten or SEC team on a Wednesday in March."We just have to get our feet under us and control our emotions, because there's really no amount of preparing for this until you've been in that environment," Bishop said. "We've played in some big ballparks and cool environments but a midweek non-conference game is not quite the same as this."But that's the reward Bishop has been diligently pursuing for the last decade. He repeatedly turned the focus to his players and SDSU fans and administration when asked about what this week means to him and the program at large, but he also acknowledged he's enjoying the buzz that's suddenly surrounding his team."When the last out was made (in the SLT) I think I had 175 text messages when I got on the bus," Bishop said. "From friends and family to alums that played here in the 60s and 70s to guys that won all the North Central championships in the 90s, it's been really fun to reconnect with a lot of people who care about this program. There are people who have supported this program the whole way, and to me, this is a little extra special for them. Hopefully this shows that it can be done here. That you can accomplish anything if you just kind of stay with it."

However, former Patriots defensive back and Super Bowl champion Jason McCourty thinks he will end up with the Washington Commanders."You look at him going home, potentially to the Commanders, being opposite Terry McLaurin with what they have in their wide receiver room," McCourty said on "Up & Adams" on Tuesday.Deebo Samuel is a free agent, and his return to the Commanders seems unlikely. The team drafted University of Clemson wide receiver Antonio Williams in the third round, and he could end up playing a big role. However, outside of McLaurin, the wide receiver corps is unproven.Diggs was born in Maryland. He played high school and college football in Maryland, so a return to his home state would not be surprising. Wagner's Ashlyn Koupal excels at unique event combination of shot put, high jump
May 27—WAGNER, S.D. — The migration between the high jump runway and the shot put circle isn't a common route.During three seasons of competing in the vastly different field disciplines, Ashlyn Koupal has never met another athlete who tried their hand at both events. But the Wagner senior, a future University of Nebraska women's basketball player and five-time Class A state high jump champion, hasn't just added shot put to her repertoire for fun. With her final state track and field meet looming, Koupal is set to challenge for the top place on the podium for high jump once again, but she also figures to be in the mix for shot put, as well."It's definitely a really unique situation," Koupal said of the combination of events. "But I think that also just goes to show the time I put in to get stronger and do both."High jump commonly pairs with several events, but shot put is not one of them. Both events require an element of lower-body explosion to excel, but beyond that, Koupal can't think of much they have in common.Even still, Koupal is tied for the No. 1 high jump clearance among Class A girls competitors this season at 5 feet, 6 inches, and is simultaneously No. 4 for Class A girls shot put with a throw of 38 feet, 2 inches. Koupal entered the 2026 season with a career best of 35 feet, 7 inches, but has since added more than 2 1/2 feet to arrive at 38-2, which she recorded on May 21 at the Platte-Geddes Last Chance Meet, the final tune-up for the state meet. Koupal is also chasing the Wagner school record, which she said stands at around 39-6."I've surprised myself a little bit," Koupal said. "I knew I would be better than last year because I got stronger in the offseason, but I didn't know I'd be this much better."Statewide, regardless of class, Koupal is tied for No. 4 in the high jump and ranks No. 12 in the shot put. Some of Koupal's peers on the high jump leaderboards this year are also ranked highly for long jump and triple jump in the field. On the track, high jumpers can frequently be found in hurdles races and as relay members, particularly at shorter distances. There is only one other top Class A high jumper who is also on a leaderboard for one of the three throwing events: Lydia Nelson, of Madison, is tied for the No. 6 ranking in the high jump and is No. 6 for javelin in Class A.For Koupal, shot put has been a welcome change of pace and something of an escape from high jump, where she has sky-high expectations for herself and feels a certain outside pressure to perform.Koupal doesn't spend much time practicing high jump during the season, but this year has spent time working on shot put during almost every practice session, attributing all that extra time to her success."Shot put is definitely more of a chill event for me. I can kind of just come out and do it, and I'm usually messing around a little between my throws," Koupal said. "There's just starting to be a little pressure. As I get closer to the top, I expect myself to do well, and I know other people expect me to do well, too."This year marks Koupal's third time qualifying for the Class A state meet for the shot put, but she left the 2024 and 2025 competitions feeling unsatisfied with her performance, taking 22nd as a sophomore and 13th as a junior. In her final go-around, Koupal's sights are set on a dual podium finish, and she aims to outperform her seed position in both events. The Class A girls high jump is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Thursday, with the Class A girls shot put at 2 p.m. Friday, at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls."I'm super excited, and, obviously, I'm most excited for high jump, and hopefully I can come out on top one more time," Koupal said. "But for the first time, I'm also really excited for shot put, and hopefully I can get on that podium."

St. Louis Shock Secure First Major League Pickleball Team Media Deal
The entire St. Louis Shock organization, including players, owners, and staff, celebrate the 2025 MLP Cup win.MLP/St. Louis ShockOne of the questions I get often when discussing the unique state of professional pickleball at present is a simple one: How is Major League Pickleball going to become a self-supporting league? The answer is always kind of a simple one: they need TV deals to drive revenue. To that end, the St. Louis Shock just announced the first such deal in the league’s nascent existence. They have signed a 3-year deal with PickleballTV to broadcast their behind the scenes show “Shock & Awe, presented by Heat Controller."The new season of the show, which began last year, debuts tonight, 5/27/26, at 7pm EST on PickleballTV. Per the press release, “The show offers an all-access look at the Shock’s pursuit of the MLP Championship and provides a unique perspective into the key business decisions, partnerships, roster, and front office decisions made by MLP’s leading franchise.” The show will continue to air on PBTV after each Shock regular season/playoff event for the rest of the summer.Basically, if you liked the Partners documentary, you’ll like Shock & Awe as well, especially since the stars of Partners are essentially the Shock roster (Anna Bright, Kate Fahey, Hayden Patriquin, and Gabriel Tardio).Ross Chaifetz, the Owner and General Manager of the Shock, spoke on behalf of the team in saying, “the STL Shock are thrilled to be the first ever MLP team to announce a media partnership. This is a game changer for our league, sport, and franchise.”Hopefully this serves as a pathway for other enterprising MLP team owners to search out new and additional revenue streams as the league continues to move forward. Barcelona, Liverpool, and Real Madrid After Inter Star
Barcelona, Liverpool, and Real Madrid After Inter StarInter will have to patiently wait to learn whether Denzel Dumfries will be staying, as his rather feasible release clause, which amounts to €25M, is set to come into effect again later in the summer. A few teams are lining up to assess his level of interest in departing San Siro, Mediaset reports. In particular, Liverpool and Barcelona have been poking around. The Reds are going through a deep retooling of their squad. Instead, the Blaugrana need to sell Jules Kounde before signing another right-back, but he has a few suitors.Real Madrid are also keen on the Dutchman, as José Mourinho, who should be hired soon, covets him. Inter will try to sign Marco Palestra regardless of what happens with Dumfries. They have further uncertainty on the wings. On the other hand, Atalanta ask for at least €40M, so La Beneamata has to weigh that against addressing other roles. The youngster can play on both wings. The Scudetto winners will most likely need another man unrelated to the future of the 30-year-old. Luis Henrique flopped this year but is generating interest, Carlos Augusto has so far rejected a new contract, and Matteo Darmian has reached the end of the line. Our Take on Dumfries and InterHis deal and its release clause are one of their rare faux pas by their management in recent years, but they haven’t paid the price for it yet. All in all, it’s a bit surprising that he’s still in town. His season was nothing special, mostly because of injuries, and he’s not getting any younger. Still, the figure is below market value, and his exit would force them to invest significantly in the role.

‘I like to assume the role of leader’: Cubarsi talks Lewandowski, Pique, Champions League, Spain, World Cup
‘I like to assume the role of leader’: Cubarsi talks Lewandowski, Pique, Champions League, Spain, World CupFC Barcelona players form the single biggest contingent from any club in the Spanish national team heading to the upcoming FIFA World Cup, and most of them will even feature as starters. In defence, two players are called up by Luis de la Fuente – Eric Garcia and Pau Cubarsi. While the former’s call-up was a welcome surprise, the latter’s was always on the cards. After all, Cubarsi has already established himself as one of the most talented young players in the world in his position, and it will not be surprising if he is handed a starting role in the World Cup as well.Cubarsi’s interviewCubarsi spoke to the Esquire magazine (h/t SPORT) recently where he commented on his short career so far and how it felt to be playing at such an elite level at a young age.He began by outlining the pressure that comes with playing for Barcelona and how it was a welcome challenge for him.“There is pressure, but it is a pressure that is felt daily to always try to do things as well as possible. We are one of the best teams in the world, for me the best,” he said.Ready to step up as a leader. (Photo by Eric Alonso/Getty Images)He then explained how mere participation was not enough for him and how he seeks a leadership role.“I like to assume the role of leader, to be the partner who helps his colleagues. The central defender sees the whole field and that already gives you some authority. You must be aware if someone needs help,” he noted. On his debut and idolsCubarsi then spoke on his debut with the first-team and the moment he knew that he had made it to the senior side for good.“When you debut, you do not only debut, but you see that they continue to allow you to continue playing,” the youngster remarked.“Then you realise, ‘I’m playing with the first Barça team!’, something I have been chasing for years,” he added. He then revealed how it was always a dream of his to play with the senior Barcelona side.“I’m the boy who always dreamed of wearing the Barça shirt.”The youngster then spoke about his idol, Gerard Pique, and the similarities he sees between his game and the club legend’s.“We have that similarity of always trying to get the clean ball from behind.”Cubarsi also then spoke on how Robert Lewandowski was a massive role model for him and helped him grow as a player, saying:“He was one of my idols as a child and, in the end, I have had the opportunity to share the locker room with him.”Cubarsi enjoyed sharing a dressing room with Lewandowski. (Photo by Aitor Alcalde/Getty Images)“Training with him makes you a better defender,” he added. On La Liga and the UEFA Champions LeagueThe youngster then outlined the importance of La Liga and how the tournament is not as simple to win as it appears from the outside.“It is the competition that makes you spend all year giving your highest level. It is the prize for regularity.”On winning two back-to-back league titles, the defender said: “[It’s] something incredible.”He then gave his two cents on the UEFA Champions League, a competition the team still has not decoded yet under Hansi Flick.“The Champions League is the biggest of them all, and the Culés want it back.”Finally, he was asked how it felt to be competing for the FIFA World Cup with a squad largely similar to that which he played with in La Liga and the UCL until recently.“They are two very familiar squads. We are very close and I think that can make a difference when it comes to fighting for a title.”“[To] try to win everything,” he added, was the team’s objective. On the World CupExcited for the World Cup. (Photo by Florencia Tan Jun/Getty Images)In the final segment of his interview, the player was asked about the upcoming FIFA World Cup and his expectations for the event. He began by explaining how it felt to be in the World Cup squad at such a young age.“Most likely at that time I would not have believed it,” he said, admitting his younger self would not believe it.“Having the possibility of going to a senior World Cup is something spectacular,” he added. When asked how he would react if he were given the chance to make his debut in the competition, Cubarsi said,“I will jump quietly, being myself and willing to enjoy it, aware of everything I have been through to get there.”On Spain’s chances in the event, the young defender concluded saying,“We don’t feel like favourites, but we are Spain, one of the best teams in the world. We are at the ‘top’ of the ‘top’.”

Hannah Dallavalle has been capped 69 times by Wales [Getty Images]Premiership Women's Rugby leaders Gloucester-Hartpury have agreed a new deal with Wales international centre Hannah Dallavalle. The 29-year-old has been with The Circus since 2019, and been part of a run of a hat-trick of league titles over the past three seasons.Dallevalle joins fellow international Sam Monaghan in re-signing for 2026-27, following last week's news that three stalwarts of the side's recent successes - England captain Zoe Stratford, Tatyana Heard and Sarah Beckett - will leave the club at the end of the current campaign. From Rebuilding to Resilience, Sabres Season Offers Plenty To Celebrate
The Buffalo Sabres have a lot to be proud of this season. Despite a painful Game 7 defeat to the Montreal Canadiens in the second round, there’s plenty of optimism for the future. A team that had the longest playoff drought in the NHL came within a goal of making the Eastern Conference Finals. It was a season that no one expected. Heading into 2025-2026, the Sabres were hoping for just a push for a playoff spot. Buffalo got off to a rough start, and by December 15th, 2025, fired GM Kevyn Adams.A Team Dinner TurnaroundAt their lowest point, a heart-to-heart team dinner in Calgary galvanized the team. Following that dinner, the Sabres came out swinging against the Edmonton Oilers, up 3-0 in the third period. However, the Oilers came back and ultimately tied it with one second left in the third. When it looked like yet another gut-punch loss, Alex Tuch scored in overtime to get the two points. From that point on, the Sabres never looked back. They took off and went on an unprecedented 10-game winning streak.ALEX TUCH WINS IT IN OT!The @BuffaloSabres get the extra point in @Energizer overtime! pic.twitter.com/JkB9ssv4lR— NHL (@NHL) December 10, 2025 This guided them to a 50-win, 109-point campaign and an Atlantic Division title. It became one of the biggest turnarounds in recent NHL history. They made the postseason for the first time in 15 years.Sabres Cinderella Playoff Run The Sabres weren’t just happy to be back in the playoffs. They made sure to make their mark, starting with a first-round matchup vs the rival Boston Bruins. They started with a dramatic come-from-behind win in Game 1 at home and eventually took a 3-1 series lead.HOW ABOUT THEM SABRES! #StanleyCupGame 5 between the @NHLBruins and @BuffaloSabres is TUESDAY at 7:30p ET on @NHL_On_TNT, @Sportsnet, & @TVASports! pic.twitter.com/0ns1P3Ylbk— NHL (@NHL) April 26, 2026Though they couldn’t close it at home, they earned their third win on the road with a dominant 4-1 result in Game 6 in Boston. Just like that, the Sabres were moving on to the second round. Their opponent was another Cinderella team in the Canadiens. What followed was a series for the ages. The two teams went back and forth, with both teams stealing games on the road and ultimately pushing the series to a Game 7.The Sabres came back down 2-0 in that Game 7 to force overtime. Despite creating several great chances, Alex Newhook ended the Sabres‘ season in heartbreaking fashion midway through the first overtime. It was a tough pill for Sabres fans to swallow.Looking Back With Lots of PrideEven though their season came to an end, there is so much to be proud of and to build upon. The team saw breakout seasons from Tage Thompson, Rasmus Dahlin, and Zach Benson. They also broke the longest playoff drought in recent league history. The Sabres have youth, talent, a strong front office, and a fanbase that’s hungry for more. GM Jarmo Kekäläinen believed that his team could make the playoffs the day he was hired. Now the belief should shift to the Sabres competing for the Stanley Cup.The future is bright in western New York, and it may not be too long before the Sabres finally bring the Stanley Cup to the city of Buffalo. The post From Rebuilding to Resilience, Sabres Season Offers Plenty To Celebrate appeared first on The Lead.

Jalen McMillan says the Bucs offense will expand under Zac Robinson
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are entering a new offensive chapter under coordinator Zac Robinson, and wide receiver Jalen McMillan believes the changes will create more opportunities throughout the passing game. Speaking about Tampa Bay's offensive transition, McMillan indicated the Buccaneers plan to open up the playbook more this season as Robinson installs a retooled system designed to maximize versatility and create matchup advantages across formations. The transition comes after Robinson's arrival from Atlanta, where his offensive structure emphasized flexibility, motion, and alignment variation designed to stress defenses and eliminate predictable tendencies.Tampa Bay enters 2026 with an intriguing collection of offensive talent capable of thriving in that environment.Bucs WR Jalen McMillan says this offense will be opening up the playbook more this season. pic.twitter.com/QypmpiodjV— PewterReport 🏴‍☠️ (@PewterReport) May 26, 2026Chris Godwin Jr. remains one of the foundational pieces of the passing attack and is expected to return to a primary slot role after spending years establishing himself as one of the NFL's most productive interior receivers. Whether working crossers, wheel concepts, out-breaking routes, or designed touches near the line of scrimmage, Godwin's body control, toughness, and ability to create after the catch have consistently made him one of Tampa Bay's most reliable offensive weapons.McMillan is expected to assume an even larger role entering his second NFL season after finishing 2025 with a strong late-season surge. His ball-tracking ability, body control, and success at the catch point give Tampa Bay another versatile option who can line up in multiple spots within Robinson's system. The offensive philosophy Robinson employed in Atlanta provides insight into how Tampa Bay could evolve. The Falcons consistently moved skill players across formations to create favorable matchups while avoiding tendencies that would allow defenses to identify run or pass concepts before the snap.Tight end Kyle Pitts led Atlanta with 407 snaps aligned inside, representing 44% of his offensive workload. Drake London followed with 225 slot snaps, accounting for 33% of his usage, while Darnell Mooney and Casey Washington also operated from interior alignments to keep defenses from keying on formation tendencies. The versatility extended beyond alignment flexibility.Pitts operated effectively on chip-and-release concepts and vertical routes, Mooney created separation on underneath patterns and intermediate concepts, and Robinson consistently adjusted personnel deployment based on matchup opportunities. That flexibility could become a defining characteristic for Tampa Bay.Godwin projects as the centerpiece of the slot operation, but McMillan and rookie Emeka Egbuka could create additional versatility. Both players spent significant time operating from the interior during their college careers, giving Robinson multiple options to deploy receivers interchangeably without dramatically altering personnel packages. That type of positional flexibility has become increasingly valuable across modern NFL offenses because it forces defenses to communicate quickly and adjust without obvious formation indicators. For Tampa Bay, the transition also arrives during a period of offensive evolution. The Buccaneers are moving forward following Mike Evans' departure after 12 seasons with the organization, creating opportunities for younger playmakers while reshaping portions of the offense around a different identity.Godwin provides continuity. McMillan could provide growth.Robinson hopes to create the structure that allows both to thrive. If Tampa Bay successfully translates Robinson's concepts from the practice field into regular-season production, the Buccaneers could field one of the NFC's more unpredictable offensive attacks entering 2026.This article originally appeared on Bucs Wire: Jalen McMillan sees bigger playbook for Buccaneers under Zac Robinson

2 key senators strike deal on sweeping bipartisan college sports reform with transfer, eligibility and cap enforcement
Two U.S. senators have struck a deal in landmark bipartisan legislation to regulate college athletics.Next comes a months-long process of gaining enough support for passage in a divided U.S. Congress at a divisive time in America.Sens. Maria Cantwell, a Washington Democrat, and Ted Cruz, a Texas Republican, reached an agreement on Wednesday after more than two months of intense negotiations, adopting a comprehensive bill that would grant the NCAA its long-sought antitrust exemption related to athlete transfers, eligibility and the compensation cap.The bill — named the Protect College Sports Act — precludes the creation of a so-called “super league”; creates an agent registry limiting fees to 5%; permits the pooling of media rights; and bars coaches from leaving their team before the season ends.“This bipartisan bill is designed to save the part of college sports that fans actually care about,” Cruz said in an interview with Yahoo Sports announcing the legislation.Cantwell described the bill as delivering historic protections for athletes in creating a national standard for name, image and likeness compensation (NIL) by preempting state law. The bill is intended to curtail the industry’s spending arms race to protect the future of Olympic and women’s sports and also provides athletes with guaranteed medical care and scholarships.“Congress is hungry for any bipartisan legislation. I know America is for sure,” Cantwell said on the bill’s chances of passage in the U.S. Senate, where 60 votes are necessary for the adoption of legislation.Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) are proposing a bill that would change college sports. Tom Williams via Getty ImagesPerhaps the most interesting aspect of the bill is the narrow legal protection granted to college sports’ governing body intended to slow player movement, standardize eligibility and control the third-party NIL spending on athletes. The bill…- enables administrators to enforce policies related to movement by permitting only one transfer before a player must miss a season of eligibility. A second or more transfers are permitted under certain conditions, such as a head coach leaving or the elimination of an athlete’s sport.- establishes a five-year eligibility length for college athletes and prohibits professional athletes — even those having competed internationally — from participating in college sports if they earned compensation in their pro careers beyond prize money.- codifies portions of the NCAA’s House settlement by granting legal protection to the NCAA and College Sports Commission to enforce strict standards in prohibiting third-party NIL deals.- remains mostly neutral on athlete employment, leaving open as a possibility for athletes to eventually be deemed employees or/and collectively bargain. The capThe policing of the cap is perhaps one of the more notable additions to the legislation. The NCAA’s settlement of three antitrust cases (commonly referred to as House) ushered in athlete compensation directly from schools to athletes but within a capped system similar to the NFL’s salary cap. Next year, each school has $21.3 million to spend on all of their athletes, but many programs, in order to achieve an advantage in a competitive recruiting environment, have redirected corporate sponsor cash to their rosters disguised as third-party NIL — compensation that doesn’t count against the cap.Given the above-the-cap spending, football rosters have ballooned to more than $30 million and men’s basketball to more than $15 million, especially within the richest leagues: the Big Ten and SEC.This piece of legislation stands to grant the College Sports Commission, the new enforcement entity created by the power leagues to prevent phony third-party payments, a path to enforce the cap policies without the threat of legal challenges — a significant move and one that could, if the cap isn’t increased, result in a decrease in player compensation rates. However, in the interview with Yahoo Sports, Cantwell said language in the bill allows the conferences to increase the cap, which she described as a “key thing.”“The cap can float,” she said. “In case the parties go back to the table (to raise the cap) — there’s dialogue about this — we want athletes to know that there is a mechanism of getting a higher percentage of the revenue share.”A higher cap, she believes, will prevent any decrease in athlete compensation.“I am ensuring athlete rights with a private right of action for NIL compensation and revenue sharing. That doesn’t exist right now,” she said. “And do I think this discussion about collective bargaining is over? No.”The bill’s announcement comes at a divisive time as the four power conferences hotly debate how to address athlete compensation issues while also growing more apart financially. In fact, the bill’s introduction arrives in the midst of the SEC’s annual spring meetings near Destin, Florida, where university presidents, athletic directors and football and basketball coaches gather to discuss a breakaway model to self-govern as well as a concept around collective bargaining and changes to the College Sports Commission itself, where more than $100 million of NIL compensation goes unapproved — much of it from the SEC and Big Ten.How the Senate bill impacts those ongoing conversations is unclear. While the bill does not disturb the House settlement in any way, it sets “clear rules” and “puts teeth in place to enforce those rules,” Cruz said. That includes keeping intact the College Sports Commission’s athlete arbitration path that gives players the ability to arbitrate over rejected NIL deals. But the senators are clear on this concept: Third-party NIL compensation that the CSC deems as phony (not meeting a “valid business purpose”) can be rejected from the system.“The approach of this bill is to give highly targeted legal protections to the enforcement of the rules that are specified in the federal statute,” Cruz said. “So, if it's fake NIL, if it is a booster just handing an athlete a bag of cash under the table, that is breaking the rules.”Added Cantwell: “You cannot lure or induce athletes to an institution unless you have a valid business purpose.”Super League and pooling rightsWhile most Division I conferences pledged their support for the Senate legislation last week — even before the bill was released — SEC and Big Ten officials withheld their position on the matter. Those within the league expressed caution about the language specifically addressing the pooling of media rights and other concepts. For instance, the act prevents any league earning more than $1 billion in revenue on its 2025 tax returns from merging or consolidating with another conference. There are only two leagues that earn such revenue: the Big Ten and SEC, college sports’ behemoths who many believe are destined to eventually break away to create their own “super league.”There is another concept targeting those two conferences: The bill offers leagues the ability — it’s an option only — to pool their media rights contracts in an effort to generate more revenue at a financially stressed time. The pooling of rights — a divisive topic among SEC and Big Ten leaders who are against the proposal — is only “voluntary,” the two senators reaffirmed to Yahoo Sports.Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti and SEC commissioner Greg Sankey attend a college football game in 2024.USA TODAY Sports via Reuters Connect / REUTERSHowever, as the two biggest revenue generators, the SEC and Big Ten would need to participate in the pooling of rights for projected media values to “work,” Cruz acknowledges. The other conferences must “negotiate” with the two conferences in striking “an agreement that would be attractive to them” to garner their inclusion.“Obviously we're trying to make sure that that nobody runs away with the eyeballs or a certain amount of revenue and hijacks the rest of the system, leaving it short changed,” Cantwell said.A minimum threshold of 75% of the 138 FBS schools must be reached to collectively pool rights, which would come through replicating the Sports Broadcasting Act of 1961, which provides professional leagues the right to evade antitrust law and collectively pool rights.Cantwell is encouraging the conferences to return to more regional competition, even believing that the leagues should reverse their conference makeups that created mega-leagues that span coast to coast and cost schools an additional $3 million annually in travel expenses, she said.“You’ll see from the [Sports Broadcasting Act] section that we try to promote regional eyeballs. I’m hoping the schools go back to regionalism,” she said. “Regionalism feeds a lot of sports viewership.”The bill does not address or prohibit conference expansion in a limited manner, Cantwell said.An unlikely compromiseThough only the first step in a labyrinth approval process within Congress’ bureaucratic system, the Senate agreement is a historic moment in college leaders’ seven-year lobbying effort on Capitol Hill to bring stability to a landscape that grew unregulated through their slow resistance to change. Court rulings cratered the NCAA’s archaic amateurism framework, with many of its rules — created and upheld by the schools themselves — having been found to violate antitrust law.The multi-million dollar lobbying from college executives has culminated in legislation from two most unlikely partners: a gregarious conservative Texan and a career politician from Washington state — neither of whose views necessarily align.Cruz and Cantwell — the chair and ranking member of the powerful Senate Commerce Committee — began in earnest their discussions in March, meeting weekly in person, either the two lawmakers or their staff. Conversations accelerated with daily meetings on May 13.The gatherings went beyond the Capitol. They jointly met in Phoenix in late April with members of the presidential committee on college sports, including former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Yankees president Randy Levine, Texas billionaire Cody Campbell and business titan Gerry Cardinale. A working dinner on May 20 turned into more hours-long, in-person negotiations, as well as conversations with college stakeholders, player activists and White House personnel to shape legislation. Each lawmaker compromised on an assortment of issues. Cruz backed off on a rigid anti-employment concept and Cantwell acquiesced on the one-time transfer policy — both significant compromises necessary to reach agreement.“Today is a time of deep partisan division, and yet sports are one of the very few things in life that brings us together, that bring communities together, where people of different parties, of different races, of different religions, side by side, embrace and cheer on their teams, and there's a powerful unifying force to sports,” Cruz said.“How did Senator Cruz and I come together?” Cantwell asks rhetorically. “I mean, this isn't exactly R and D politics here. This is the politics of athletes and traditional opportunities for Americans to participate in sports, and we can see it being eaten away, and so I think there's a lot of people who say let's not let that happen.”In the end, they landed on a bill just days after a separate piece of legislation, the Republican-authored SCORE Act, flopped in the House of Representatives. What’s next? While the Senate bill’s fate remains unclear, any legislation with Republican and Democrat co-authors holds a more realistic chance of advancing than recent one-sided bills — none of them having reached a floor vote in either chamber. But now comes the hard part. While featuring many pro-athlete concepts, the Senate act includes player movement limitations and potential compensation restrictions that may draw scrutiny during a lengthy amendment and hearing process. In fact, hearings are expected to begin as soon as next week, though one has not been formally scheduled. What awaits the bill are committee fights, floor arguments and external pressures, both from entities who want to see it thrive and fail. For instance, members of the Congressional Black Caucus suggested that they will push back against any bill supported by the SEC unless their university leaders speak out against the attack on the Voting Rights Act.The act also:- makes it illegal for coaches to leave their teams before the season concludes and schools cannot hire coaches before a season concludes — something those on Capitol Hill refer to the “Lane Kiffin Rule,”- introduces a medical trust for lower-resource athletic departments,- creates a commission to study the pooling of rights and long-term governance of college sports,- preserves access to local communities by requiring that broadcasts of local teams are not behind a paywall and requires schools maintain scholarship/roster levels for Olympic sports based on a three-year period of funding. Each of those concepts is only triggered if rights are pooled,- features a “private right of action” for athletes to file a legal claim if they do not believe the law is being adhered to,- re-establishes regional rivalries by requiring some schools to restart rivalry games if they compete in a conference without three or more of their top 10 most played opponents. This concept is only triggered if rights are pooled.

James Garner: From England's 'Mini-Valverde' to missing out on the World Cup
James Garner: From England's 'Mini-Valverde' to missing out on the World Cup(Photo by Matt McNulty/Getty Images)Amid the frustration at Everton’s run-in, and their meek final-day showing against Tottenham, James Garner missing out on the England squad has perhaps gone under the radar. While from a selfish standpoint with Blue-tinted specs on, it’s good that one of Everton’s key players is going to get a full period of rest before pre-season, Garner deserved his place on that plane. He has been one the Premier League’s outstanding central midfielders this term, and his numbers speak for themselves.Garner scored two league goals and provided seven assists, with those nine goal involvements ranking joint-third for Everton, along with Iliman Ndiaye. The 25-year-old created 56 chances, 18 more than the Toffees’ next-best Jack Grealish, albeit the latter did miss close to half the season due to injury. He led Everton for passes (1,793) and expected assists (6.0).But off the ball, he was equally as excellent. No player in the division made more interceptions than Garner’s 59 or attempted more than his 120 tackles. Of course, it’s worth noting that Everton saw less of the ball, so he was bound to need to do the dirty work more, but that should not take away from his excellence in that department.Garner won 179/294 ground duels, ranking behind only Mateus Fernandes (180), Ndiaye (180), Joao Gomes (199) and Elliot Anderson (231). His 60.9% success rate, meanwhile, is better than any other Premier League player to have contested 160+ duels across the campaign. His superb form not only earned him a new contract earlier in the season, but also a first England call-up.Garner was put straight into Thomas Tuchel’s team against Uruguay in March, and was fantastic on his debut. So much so that Tuchel labelled him as England’s own “mini [Federico] Valverde”.Yet two months later, Garner has not made the cut.Instead, Tuchel has gone with far too many full-back options and selected Jordan Henderson, who has played only three league games for Brentford since the end of March, as a central midfield alternative to Anderson and Declan Rice, with Manchester United’s Kobbie Mainoo also in there.Tuchel has made some contentious calls, but the omission of all of Garner, Adam Wharton and, arguably, Alex Scott, is bizarre.Mainoo seems to be getting in on the fact he plays for Manchester United. Yes, he has been good under Michael Carrick, but he is not a better player than any of those listed above, and as the numbers show, Garner should be going to North America.Given Garner’s versatility, it seemed like he had the edge, he was the logical pick. He can play in midfield, right-back or even left-back. In a tournament, that is extremely useful. But Tuchel has made his bed. When asked about Garner’s omission last week, David Moyes said: “I am disappointed for Jimmy, but I’ve got to say I’m not surprised because I think the form in the last five or six weeks haven’t really encouraged players for selection.“I think your team, your players, need to be in form to attract England managers, so we have to take a bit of the disappointment with Jimmy as well that we have not been able to get him to the World Cup.”There’s probably some truth to that. Garner’s displays have tailed off somewhat as Everton’s form has dropped off a cliff and they’ve plummeted down to 13th.He has still been solid, and well worthy of the club’s Player of the Season Award he received last week, but has just looked that yard short on occasion.Fatigue probably played its part. Virgil van Dijk is the only Premier League outfielder who can better Garner’s 3,414 minutes in the competition in 2025-26.But that is what Garner should want. If he wants to keep on improving, then with that comes extra strain and more minutes. You find the energy, you dig into the reserves. This has been Garner’s first completely injury-free season during his time at Everton, and though the blow of missing out on a World Cup when he is entering his prime is a cruel one, there will be future tournaments to target — the next one, of course, being the Euros on British soil in 2028.He can use not only this omission, but also Everton’s late-season failings, as motivation. Don’t let it happen again. Don’t let opportunities like this slip through your fingers.Of all the players Everton have signed in the last few years, Garner is undoubtedly the biggest success story.A £9million move, with bonuses potentially taking it up towards £15m, looks like a bargain. He was signed as a 21-year-old and is now about as well-rounded a player as they come, and his value is probably reaching £50m at least. It is a lesson for Everton’s transfer committee too. If you’re going to buy young talents that you need time to develop, then they should be for lower fees, not for £30m+, when areas of the team are so short. But a lesson to the manager, who deserves credit for Garner’s growth, too — those talents need to play. While Garner should be immensely proud of his campaign, and his development, the challenge now is a clear one: Continue to improve. Then, you can’t be ignored.

Ilia Topuria wants to fight Shakur Stevenson because he 'talks too much'
Ilia Topuria would like to make his boxing debut against someone like Shakur Stevenson. While Topuria (17-0) acknowledges Stevenson as a good boxer, he believes the four-division world champion has an issue with him. Topuria believes he can hold his own against the best boxers in the world today. While it is not a dream for Topuria, the UFC lightweight champion would like to compete in boxing someday. Topuria would especially like to transition to boxing to fight someone like Stevenson, who, he says, runs his mouth too much. “[Shakur Stevenson] is a good fighter,” Topuria said on streaming with Adin Ross when the influencer declared MMA better than boxing. Stevenson refused to agree with Ross, who then brought up Ilia Topuria. When Ross lauded Topuria’s elite boxing skills, Stevenson called out the UFC champion to fight him in boxing.

9 missing after Washington paper mill tank implosion and officials say there’s no hope of survivors
Damage is seen at Nippon Dynawave Packaging Co., after a tank containing hazardous liquid imploded, on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, in Longview, Wash. (Karen Ducey/The Seattle Times via AP)2026-05-27T14:56:33Z LONGVIEW, Wash. (AP) — Crews were set to resume searching Wednesday for nine workers at a Washington paper mill where a tank imploded, releasing a highly destructive chemical mixture called “white liquor” and causing at least one confirmed death. Authorities said there was no hope of finding more survivors of Tuesday’s tank implosion at Nippon Dynawave Packaging Co. in Longview, which also injured nine other people, including a responding firefighter. But before any bodies of the missing can be recovered, crews on Wednesday must first stabilize the tank, which was at risk of collapsing further and leaking more of the caustic liquid. The implosion caused the huge circular tank to buckle and collapse on one side, and officials said they would only work during daylight because of the dangers. While the cause remains unknown, authorities said there was no threat to the community, a Columbia River city of about 40,000 people with long ties to the Washington and Oregon paper and lumber industries. It was the second notable chemical tank failure in days on the West Coast, following the evacuation of thousands of Southern California residents due to a damaged tank at an aerospace plant before those orders were lifted Tuesday night. The paper mill tank was holding about 900,000 gallons (3.4 million liters) of a liquid made of mostly sodium hydroxide and sodium sulfide. Known as white liquor, it is used with heat to break down wood to make kraft paper, a durable material used in packaging, shopping bags and other products. Read More The sprawling plant, which employs about 1,000 people, makes material for tissues, printing paper, cups, plates, and cartons. It sits along the river next to other timber, paper and chemical businesses. At a community vigil Tuesday night, dozens gathered to pray, light candles and embrace loved ones.Crystal Moldenhauer, a Longview resident, said she has friends at the plant who remained unaccounted for. She said people called and texted each other all day trying to figure out what happened. “We’re all still waiting for answers,” she said. “There’s families that have been torn apart, and we don’t know why.”The cause of the implosion remained unclear. Scott Goldstein, a fire chief with Cowlitz County, said Tuesday night that the tank still held about 90,000 gallons (more than 340,000 liters) of the volatile liquid. “We don’t know until we know, hopefully tomorrow, how we can stabilize the tank. Do we remove the product first? Do we stabilize the tank first or the vice versa?” Goldstein said.Hours after the disaster, officials repeatedly referred to the situation as a recovery effort. Some of those who were injured suffered burns or inhalation injuries, authorities said. Following the tank’s rupture, the liquid spilled into a drainage ditch, said Brittny Goodsell, a state Ecology Department spokesperson. “I know there’s a lot of questions about how all of this happened and I want to assure you that we will all continue to pressure to get answers to those questions,” Murray said. Safety complaints were filed against Nippon Dynawave in March and May. The state’s labor and industries department said on X that both were unrelated to the current situation. One was an anonymous complaint about a valve on a tank, according to the department, which noted that it was not the tank that imploded. Nippon Dynawave, a subsidiary of Japan-based Nippon Paper Group, has been fined $3,400 for three separate health and safety violations found by Washington Department of Labor and Industries inspectors since the start of 2021, according to the department’s online database.Just over 40 people died between January 2021 and mid-October 2023 as a result of hazardous chemical incidents in the U.S., according to a paper released by a network of environmental justice organizations in late 2023.___Boone reported from Boise, Idaho. Noblesville hitting stride at right time. 'We're finally backing each other up.'
ZIONSVILLE — Deke Bullard had a sizable collection of bullet points to go through with his players when they gathered in left field following Noblesville's 4-2 win over Hamilton Southeastern in the Class 4A Sectional 8 semifinals Tuesday. Each declaration from their head coach was followed by two claps from the players, with an occasional "ooh" and stray observation sprinkled in.The highlights…>> Addi Retzinger pitched an absolute gem, allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits with nine strikeouts. FINAL: Noblesville 4, Hamilton Southeastern 2 Millers-Rocks on Thursday at 6 p.m. pic.twitter.com/8U6HsrS5n4— hank 🇰🇷 (@Brian_Haenchen) May 27, 2026After imploring his players to spend the off-day focused on recovery, Bullard reminded them of last week's win over Avon: I told you we were starting to look like a softball team after that one, he said. And here we are."We were much cleaner and had fewer errors," Bullard explained afterwards. "And that rolled into tonight."Maggie Kern was quietly critical in the field, tracking down foul pop-ups in front of the visitors' dugout in the first and fourth innings. Those plays may seem insignificant in the final play-by-play, but they are ones that have eluded Noblesville (and proven costly) throughout the season."The biggest thing was we wanted to really focus on cleaning up the defense, because when you start making the pitcher get 5-6 outs, it's tough," said Bullard, who has fielders playing out of position at first, shortstop and third (all catchers). "When you catch those foul balls and get those outs, it gives us a lot of energy."For their part, the players noted a late-season shift in mentality, as well. They needed to trust each other, Kern observed. They were playing "selfish softball" and focused too much on their own stats amidst a mid-season stretch that included No. 1 Lake Central, Pendleton Heights, defending 3A state champion Cathedral, Westfield and Decatur Central."Now we're finally backing each other up and getting hits for each other," she said."The most important thing is we know our own stats don't matter," Schatko added. "As long as we're putting runs on the board or making a difference for the team, we don't care what we did. It's just awesome everyone's playing so selflessly."Schatko provided a perfect example of this in the fifth inning, dropping a sacrifice bunt to score Newsom and extend Noblesville's lead to 3-0.Bullard wasn't sure if that's the first time the senior slugger's been asked to bunt, but they obviously don't do it a ton with how well she hits (.543 season average, 50 hits). "These girls will put the team above themselves every single time and in that situation, we're asking her to give herself up to get a run without getting a hit — and she did it," he said. "This is a remarkable group of girls (and) they're figuring it out as we go."Now the Millers will look to defend their sectional championship against an upstart Westfield team that's led by one of Bullard's former players (Maddie Moore) and longtime assistants (Matt Moore), and is riding the momentum of back-to-back walk-off wins."They're not going to go away," Newsom said. "They're going to compete the entire game. They're not going to quit."Follow Brian Haenchen on Twitter at @Brian_Haenchen. Could this top NFC contender be the perfect fit for Stefon Diggs?
Stefon Diggs is still looking for a new NFL home next season, and one NFL reporter has an idea of where he'd like the star wideout to end up.There has been plenty of talk about Diggs landing with the Baltimore Ravens, as they welcome a coaching change as Jesse Minter takes over the program – and there is certainly no doubt that Lamar Jackson and Stefon Diggs could be quite the dangerous duo. But ESPN NFL reporter Matt Bowen envisions Diggs landing in a different conference and on the opposite end of the country.𝗥𝗨𝗠𝗢𝗥𝗦: The Rams are viewed as the best fit for free-agent WR Stefon Diggs, per Matt Bowen. "The Ravens could be a fit for Diggs, but I really like him in L.A. alongside Puka Nacua and Davante Adams. The Rams attempted 430 passes out of 11 personnel (three wide receivers)… pic.twitter.com/jfEWITdNKv— Dov Kleiman (@NFL_DovKleiman) May 26, 2026"The Ravens could be a fit for Diggs, but I really like him in L.A. alongside Puka Nacua and Davante Adams," Bowen wrote. "The Rams attempted 430 passes out of 11 personnel (three wide receivers) last season, which was ninth most in the league, and Diggs is a natural separator who can line up inside or outside. Plus, he has the toughness to work the middle of the field on in-breaking concepts, a key element of coach Sean McVay's offense."With Matthew Stafford back following his best NFL season yet, Los Angeles certainly does seem like another ideal landing spot for the veteran wideout. And while it's true the Rams already have plenty of star power at the position with Puka Nacua and Davante Adams on the roster, if the Rams would like to pull back ahead of the Seahawks as the dominant NFC West franchise and win their second Super Bowl of the decade, Diggs could go a long way in making that happen. This article originally appeared on Touchdown Wire: Could this top NFC contender be the perfect fit for Stefon Diggs?

‘Who?’ Ronald Koeman questioned on decision to take Wout Weghorst over Burnley striker
‘Who?’ Ronald Koeman questioned on decision to take Wout Weghorst over Burnley strikerRonald Koeman spent this afternoon answering questions from Dutch media on his squad for the World Cup. Amongst those included was Wout Weghorst, which caused some chatter amongst the media and fans. Weghorst has only scored nine goals in 34 games for Ajax this season and has only hit double digit goals in a season once over the past seven seasons. Yet Koeman and the Dutch side always seems to get the best out of Weghorst, although at 33 his best years may well be behind him. There was quite a stir at the press conference when one journalist asked Koeman about another striker who had scored 11 goals in the Premier League, to which the Dutch head coach replied with ‘who?’. The striker was Zian Flemming of Burnley, another physical forward like Weghorst who is younger and has a better goal scoring record this season. Koeman then went on to defend his decision to pick the Ajax striker over Burnley’s 27-year-old forward. Flemming has not been called up for the Dutch national team once during his career. The forward left the Eredivisie in 2022 to join Millwall, where he scored 23 goals in 92 games. In 2024 he joined Burnley, helping them win promotion to the Premier League with 14 goals in 37 games. This season Burnley were relegated, with Flemming scoring 12 goals in 32 games, 11 of which came in the Premier League. Many have now begun to question whether or not Koeman has even seen Flemming play for Burnley. GBeNeFN | Ben Jackson

Gerry Sandusky says Lamar Jackson changed his broadcasting style
Over the years, Gerry Sandusky called games featuring Hall of Fame talents like Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, and Terrell Suggs, but according to Sandusky, no player changed his actual broadcasting style more than Lamar Jackson. While appearing on The Lounge with Ryan Mink and Garrett Downing, Sandusky explained how Jackson's speed and unpredictability forced him to completely rethink how he approached play-by-play.According to Sandusky, before Lamar arrived, he always tried to stay ahead of the action while calling games. That stopped working once Jackson took over at quarterback.“Before Lamar, I would always be on the front tip of the ball. Wherever the front tip of the ball is, that was where my call was. With Lamar, his ball skills are so electric and fast that when I first started to call games that Lamar was doing, I would get as lost as a defensive end crashing on the read option.”Sandusky said he eventually had to intentionally delay himself slightly while calling games just to keep up with Jackson's movement.“I had to literally back up about a second, a heartbeat, and call the game from behind the ball with Lamar. Because you never knew what he was going to do, and there was no way your brain could stay on top of it because he was moving at such electric speed.”That's probably one of the best descriptions anyone has ever given for what it's actually like trying to process Lamar Jackson in real time. Even veteran broadcasters with decades of experience had to adjust because of how unique Jackson is as a player. This article originally appeared on Ravens Wire: Ravens icon Gerry Sandusky says Lamar Jackson changed everything

Key Sens. Cruz, Cantwell look to break college sports logjam in Congress with a bipartisan bill
Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, speaks at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Dallas, March 28, 2026. (AP Photo/Gabriela Passos, File)2026-05-27T15:30:24Z WASHINGTON (AP) — Two key senators involved in a long-simmering debate over fixing college sports will introduce a bipartisan bill designed to break a congressional logjam that would regulate payments to players, limit them to one “free” transfer over their careers and create a “Lane Kiffin Rule” to restrict coach movement during the season.Sens. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, and Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., the chair and ranking member of the Senate Commerce Committee that oversees college sports, briefed The Associated Press on details of the bill they crafted in hopes it can get the 60 votes needed to clear the Senate.“This is a stability bill, not just an NIL bill,” Cruz said, referencing the name, image and likeness payments that have led to football rosters with $30 million payrolls and reshaped the industry.Cantwell said she and Cruz teamed on the legislation “because he and I really do believe the college sports system is in a bit of chaos.” The bill looks very much like a “best of” pair of legislative proposals — one called SCORE, another called SAFE — that have gone nowhere over the past several months. It contains two elements the NCAA has supported: a limited antitrust exemption and a clause that would preempt much of the patchwork of state laws currently regulating NIL. College sports has been looking to Washington for help as it grapples with rising costs of paying players and an out-of-control transfer portal that have threatened smaller sports, many involving women, that make up the backbone of the U.S. Olympic pipeline. Read More This bill, called the Protect College Sports Act (PCSA), would offer what Cruz and Cantwell said was very “targeted” antitrust protection — which was part of the largely Republican-backed SCORE Act that many Democrats opposed. That would be in exchange for what Cruz said would be “public-facing protections” for athletes in 10 areas, including guarantees for health insurance and scholarships and more stringent regulations for NIL deals from third parties. “I think it’s better predictability,” Cantwell said. “Why did we do it? Because when you’ve got thousands of athletes being cut, hundreds of programs being cut, the risk to the whole infrastructure was too high to not try to get better predictability.”The bill would limit players to one unrestricted transfer over the course of their college careers — a widely supported idea across the country — and would adopt something close to the five-year eligibility period that the NCAA appears ready to enact next month. The bill also tries to regulate coaching movement. Kiffin’s sudden move to LSU from rival Mississippi while the Rebels were preparing for the College Football Playoff last season put a fine point on an issue that has only gotten worse in an era where teams spend millions to fill out rapidly shifting football rosters: Schools have less patience (and more money) to devote to hiring coaches for a quick fix.Under terms of the bill, midseason coaching changes would be prohibited.“It’s not fair or right to poach a coach in the middle of the season while the team is still competing,” Cruz said. “There’s a reason the NFL has a rule that you can’t do that. Obviously, NFL teams hire coaches away from each other but they don’t do so in the middle of the season.” The bill would rework the Sports Broadcasting Act to allow conferences to pool their TV rights — a move proponents have said could add billions of dollars to the ecosystem in a conclusion the Southeastern and Big Ten Conferences believe is inaccurate. The senators said leagues wouldn’t be required to join the media pooling but those that do would have to use a percentage of any increase from that to support women’s and Olympic sports. That alone could be a dealbreaker for the SEC.“If you do nothing, then obviously, all these other women’s and Olympic sports and less revenue-driven activities are going to suffer,” Cantwell said. “I’ve heard directly from my institutions, they say they’re counting on this. Not creating this stability now would be a missed opportunity.” The SCORE Act, which garnered little support from Democrats, was on the House schedule last week but was abruptly pulled off when the Congressional Black Caucus and NAACP came out against it.But even if it had squeaked by in the razor-tight House, it had virtually no chance of passing as written in the Senate, where it would need 60 votes to break a possible filibuster.“The Congressional Black Caucus and I have the same objective: stop the ‘SEC SCORE Act,’” said Cantwell, referencing the SEC as one of dozens of conferences who have supported that bill. Some Democrats were reluctant to support a bill, like SCORE, that prohibited college athletes from being classified as employees of their schools. The new bill takes what Cantwell said was a “neutral” stance on the issue of employment. “Senator Cruz and I have been very concerned about producing a bill that’s not just about the 1% of athletes who go on and have a professional career,” she said. “We took care of the entire ecosystem and have opportunities for athletes to continue to have that collegiate experience.”___AP college sports: https://apnews.com/hub/college-sports

Nature, Published online: 27 May 2026; doi:10.1038/d41586-026-01567-9Inflammatory stress is shown to reprogram a subset of human haematopoietic stem cells (HSCs). These inflammatory memory (HSC-iM) cells have reduced differentiation and pass on inflammation-related gene programs to their immune-cell progeny. HSC-iM cells accumulate with age, and cancer-associated mutations affect HSC-iM cells more than they do other HSCs in clonal blood disorders.
