University of Hawaii leaves Spectrum Sports for free over-the-air broadcasts
Credit: Marco Garcia-Imagn ImagesIt will be much easier to watch University of Hawaii athletics this season, both in and out of the state.Beginning this season, the University of Hawaii will move its broadcasts from Spectrum Sports to Hawaii News Now, a group of over-the-air stations owned by Gray Media. Gray will also have the opportunity to distribute some Hawaii programming on its stations outside Hawaii.“This partnership is about maximizing exposure for our programs and ensuring every fan in Hawai’i and beyond can watch our games,” said UH Athletics Director Matt Elliott in a press release.Broadcasts on Hawaii News Now will include 110 home sporting events per year, including all available football, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, men’s volleyball, and women’s volleyball games, along with a select number of baseball, softball, and women’s soccer events. The announcement builds on changes made last season, when football broadcasts moved from pay-per-view to cable on Spectrum Sports. Outside Hawaii, broadcasts moved from the mobile-only Team1 Sports app to the more accessible free Mountain West app. The Mountain West is also in the process of launching a new, and likely paid, direct-to-consumer streaming service through the app for this upcoming season. The University of Hawaii is part of a long list of sporting entities that have worked to make their sports properties more accessible in recent years. The old pay-per-view broadcasts long helped fund the extra travel required for other schools to play at Hawaii. This new partnership is expected to return the university $7.5 million a year, up from $3.2 million in the previous pay-per-view-focused deal with Spectrum. In addition, the university will receive additional media revenue by moving its athletics entirely to the Mountain West. Outside of football, Hawaii has long been part of the Big West, which has a far less lucrative media rights deal.Several NBA and NHL teams have made similar decisions in recent years, including the Phoenix Suns and New Orleans Pelicans, which partnered with Gray Media to move all of their broadcasts over the air. Teams that have made the move have publicly expressed satisfaction with their decision despite earning less revenue than was the case through traditional RSNs.The post University of Hawaii leaves Spectrum Sports for free over-the-air broadcasts appeared first on Awful Announcing.

Detroit Lions sign WR Kyre Duplessis
The Detroit Lions announced a Thursday roster move, signing undrafted rookie wide receiver Kyre Duplessis to its 90-man roster.A 5-foot-11, 190-pound receiver, Duplessis caught 60 passes for 824 yards and five touchdowns last season with the Delaware Blue Hens. Prior to Delaware, Duplessis played three seasons for Coastal Carolina where he caught 23 passes for 348 yards and a touchdown. The signing comes on the same day that Lions head coach Dan Campbell revealed that rookie fifth-round pick Kendrick Law suffered a season-ending ACL tear. Law, a rookie wide receiver out of Kentucky, was a dynamic special teams playmaker.During his collegiate career, Law returned 32 kickoffs for 710 yards (22.9 average). Law's 23.8 yards per kickoff return average ranked fourth in the SEC last year.Duplessis doesn't boast that same special teams track record, though he did return three punts for 73 yards and a touchdown last season with the Blue Hens. The Woodbridge, Va., native also returned a pair of kickoffs for 33 yards at Delaware in 2025.For more Lions coverage, follow us on X, @TheLionsWire, and give our Facebook page a like. How did experience factor into the Utah Mammoth’s first playoff run?
Utah Mammoth fans react after Utah Mammoth right wing Kailer Yamamoto (56) scored during Game 6 of a first-round NHL Stanley Cup playoff series against the Vegas Golden Knights at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City on Friday, May 2, 2026. | Tess Crowley, Deseret News If you’ve ever heard an NHL general manager talk about roster construction, you’ve probably heard the phrase “he knows how to win.”That’s especially a priority for the Utah Mammoth.Of the 29 guys who played games for the Mammoth this season, 24 have won championships or gold medals at other playing levels. The idea is that when you win once, you know what it takes to do it again.“You hear about how hard it is to win the Cup, but once you’re actually in it, it takes everyone. It takes every shift, every game. You can’t take a shift off. So that’s definitely eye-opening for me.”Utah Mammoth center Logan CooleyBut even with all that experience in high-intensity games, the Mammoth were bounced from the Stanley Cup Playoffs in the first round. That begs the question: Does previous success actually help you win again?Logan Cooley has won a gold medal at the World Championship. He also lost by one goal in an NCAA national championship game. Even still, he was still surprised by the intensity of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.“I think it’s a completely different game,” he said during his exit interview. “(Previous experience) definitely helps prepare you with being in high-pressure moments and when it’s do-or-die. Those definitely help, but I think playoffs are just a different animal, just how physical, how fast the games are.“I don’t think anything could really compare to that.”Dylan Guenther, a two-time Western Hockey League champion with gold medals at both the U18 and U20 levels and the golden goal in the latter, says his pre-NHL success equipped him for the moment.GOLDEN GOAL FROM GUENTHER!🥇#WorldJuniorspic.twitter.com/yFrjpOQ0v2— BarDown (@BarDown) January 6, 2023“I feel like it prepares you well, like, playing in those big games and even playing in the playoffs in junior,” he said. “Like, still seven-game series, you’re still breaking down the other team. I think it prepares you. But yeah, I mean, just the crowd and the people watching on TV and stuff, I think it’s just a lot of fun to be there and to have that. Makes you want to be back there.”Perhaps the difference in readiness comes from the playoff formats of the respective players’ pre-NHL routes.Cooley played at the U.S. National Team Development Program, followed by a season at the University of Minnesota. He did not experience a multiple-game playoff series at either level, meaning this year’s matchup with the Vegas Golden Knights was his first experience with a seven-game series format.Guenther, on the other hand, played in the WHL, where the playoffs follow the same format as the NHL: four rounds of up to seven games each. He was acquainted with the grind of the Stanley Cup Playoffs because he’d been through a similar situation so many times before.Head coach André Tourigny, who spent 14 years as a coach in the Canadian Hockey League has coached a number of single-game-elimination international tournaments, offered his persepctive.“(The Stanley Cup Playoffs are) different than international tournaments because if you beat Finland in (the) semifinal, you don’t play them in (the) final. It’s a different opponent, it’s new all the time.”That said, it’s also a major step up from major-junior hockey.“It’s junior on steroids,” Tourigny said.Don’t take this to mean that the players who took the college route are underprepared. Plenty of them turn into dominant NHL stars. But perhaps they’d be even more NHL-ready if the NCAA switched to a full playoff format, rather than single-game elimination.Cooley, for example, was more than ready for the intensity in Game 1 against Vegas. He scored in that game and the next, and tallied an assist in Game 3 for a three-game point streak. But as the series wore on, the Golden Knights began to recognize his tendencies, allowing them to hold him pointless throughout the latter three games.Welcome to the Stanley Cup Playoffs, Logan Cooley! pic.twitter.com/rAdc10G5P2— Utah Mammoth (@utahmammoth) April 20, 2026“You hear about how hard it is to win the Cup, but once you’re actually in it, it takes everyone. It takes every shift, every game. You can’t take a shift off. So that’s definitely eye-opening for me,” Cooley said.Captain Clayton Keller added his perspective.“I think as we learn and get into the playoffs and get into those key moments, we’re only going to get better and more comfortable,” he said. “I think that’s how you win — you have to go through some (tough) times to get over the hump and to learn just how hard it is to win.” Vegas Golden Knights goaltender Carter Hart (79) reacts after Utah Mammoth right wing Kailer Yamamoto (56) scores during Game 6 of a first-round NHL Stanley Cup playoff series at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City on Friday, May 2, 2026. | Tess Crowley, Deseret News

Jung Hoo Lee’s four-hit game, Eric Haase grand slam gives Giants series split in Milwaukee
MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN - JUNE 04: Jung Hoo Lee #51 of the San Francisco Giants hits a double, scoring a run in the third inning against the Milwaukee Brewers at American Family Field on June 04, 2026 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. (Photo by John Fisher/Getty Images) | Getty Images Playing at American Family Field, the San Francisco Giants got six insurance runs in the 7th inning that included an Eric Haase grand slam. Their nine-run cushion, plus a home run robbery by Drew Gilbert in the bottom of the inning, proved to be just enough as the Giants held on for a 12-9 win and a series split.DREW GILBERT RIDICULOUS HOME RUN ROBBERY pic.twitter.com/Ap94vXsWKD— Talkin' Baseball (@TalkinBaseball_) June 4, 2026On a day where the wind was blowing out hard to left field, Casey Schmitt hit a leadoff home run, Jung Hoo Lee had another four-hit game, and the Giants piled up 20 hits in a game that unexpectedly turned into a save situation for Caleb Killian (S 4). Adrian Houser hit the wall with one out in the 5th, so Sam Hentges picked up his first win of the season by escaping the inning.Casey Schmitt clubs a first-pitch leadoff homer! pic.twitter.com/xph0LeFVUJ— MLB (@MLB) June 4, 2026Not only did Schmitt establish a new career high with his 13th dinger, he made a very nice catch in left in the bottom of the inning, as well snagging a tough grounder with the bases loaded while playing first base in the 9th. At this rate, Schmitt will be taking over center field after the All-Star break and become the team’s emergency catcher around Labor Day.The 5-6-7 hitters did the majority of the damage Thursday afternoon, combing for six runs, 10 hits, and four RBI. It started in the first inning, where the Giants got an RBI single from Bryce Eldridge (3-for-4, BB) and an RBI double from Matt Chapman (3-for-5) that knocked in Lee (4-for-5).Eldridge extends the lead with a clutch hit 👏 pic.twitter.com/3Z7LvfFhwl— SF Giants on NBCS (@NBCSGiants) June 4, 2026Lee has a 12-game hitting streak, during which he’s raised his batting average by 55 points. He has 19 hits in his last seven games, which no Giant has done since Bill Terry in 1932, a year where he was also managing the team. Watch your back, Vitello! Eldridge has a seven-game hitting streak where he’s raised his average 116 points and his OPS by 300 points, which is probably comparable do something Mel Ott did in 1932, right? The trio struck again in the 3rd inning. Lee doubled in Willy Adames, who just missed a home run, Eldridge walked, and Chapman hit an RBI single. Schmitt made the game 6-1 with a sac fly.Jackson Chourio hit the first in his pair of two-run homers in the 5th, during a six-pitch stretch where Houser gave aup a double, home run, and another double. Still, the Giants kept hitting and kept knocking out Brewers pitchers. Literally and figuratively. The third-inning rally chased Crow. His replacement, DL Hall, might be heading to the IL after injuring his pectoral muscle. He had to leave the game in the middle of an at-bat. Grant Anderson entered the game for him, only to leave when Eldridge lined a ball off his forearm in the 7th.Jake Woodford came in and gave up a single to Chapman and Haase’s bomb to center field.THE GIANTS CAN'T STOP HITTING GRAND SLAMS pic.twitter.com/En7BFLOrKP— SF Giants on NBCS (@NBCSGiants) June 4, 2026Woodford gave up four more singles, including Lee’s second hit of the inning, and a sacrifice fly to make the game 12-3.Everything nearly fell apart when the Giants’ Choose Your Own Adventure bullpen tried to protect their six-run lead. Chourios went deep again off Brubaker, one of two home runs that bounced off the top of the fence Thursday. David Hamilton hit his second home run off the season off Tristan Beck in the 8th. Still, Wilkin Ramos entered the 9th with a seemingly-safe six-run lead. Then, as Shawn Estes so poetically said, the Giants and their fans “puckered” a little. Chourio reached on an infield single. Even though the Brewers had cleared their bench in the 8th to rest their 3-4-5 hitters, the replacements delivered in the 9th. Gary Sanchez singled. Joey Ortiz and Blake Perkins walked. That was it for Ramos, and Killian entered with the bases loaded and an improbable save situation.Killian got a strikeout and an RBI groundout before Luis Rengfio took a break from robbing Giants of hits at third to deliver an RBI single. Then Hamilton delivered a scare, but his potentially game-tying home run died on the warning track. The wind-aided game should prepare the Giants for a weekend at Wrigley Field, delighting the hitters and terrifying the bullpen. The lineup is looking great — Rafael Devers finally got his first hit of the series in his final at-bat — while the ‘pen remains a work in regress.Ultimately, the series felt like knocking down the widest pins in a bowling alley

Grand Canyon baseball coach Steve Bieser has 'national' goals
Grand Canyon president Brian Mueller asked Steve Bieser if he had any questions for him at the end of the interview."He said, 'Yeah, I do. What are the expectations?' " Mueller said. "I just blurted out, 'Win the conference championship.' He was extremely disappointed. I thought we were going to lose him."Mueller said Bieser responded with, "I'm not going some place that just wants to win a conference championship. I want to be a national title contender. I'm only going to a place where the resources exist and the potential exists to win a national championship."After the interview, Mueller told athletic director Jamie Boggs she had to close the deal.Bieser was introduced Thursday, June 4, as GCU's new baseball coach to a throng of supporters, boosters, Havocs, staff and reporters.Bieser has a major reconstruction job on his hands after the Lopes failed to qualify for the Mountain West Conference tournament in the school's first year in the conference. The Lopes went 21-30, finishing up with Nathan Bannister as the interim coach, after head coach Gregg Wallis was dismissed in late March after an 8-18 start.Bieser said he was a little more humble about his expectations for the program, but acknowledged it is his goal to get the program on track to compete for trips to Omaha, the site of the College World Series. He's done quick work in the past, helping Southeast Missouri State, Missouri and Jacksonville State, flourish. Jacksonville State reached an NCAA regional championship. After they lost last weekend, the Lopes were able to make the hiring official. "I did say those things but I was very respectful in the way that I said it," Bieser said, in reference to Mueller's story about the interview.Bieser said after meeting with Mueller and Boggs, he knew GCU was the right place.Bieser was impressed by the administrators and the fact that GCU is a Christian-focused school. He also liked the idea of rebuilding a program that just two years ago made it to the Tucson regional final of the NCAA Tournament, before losing to West Virginia.Early in the hiring process, Boggs identified Bieser, believing he was the guy to lead the Lopes through a difficult transition. Boggs was impressed by Bieser's ability to rebuild programs and the fact that he sent 42 players to professional baseball."It was early in the baseball season, and we had a lot of names on the list, and he was at the top of the list," Boggs said. "The question was asked of me, 'Should we wait until the end of the season to see how he does?' My answer was, 'No. He wins everywhere.'"He turned around three programs. He turned them around quickly. The numbers don't lie. Steve Bieser wins everywhere."Jerry Colangelo, a GCU consultant, was impressed by Bieser after meeting him."I don't think GCU, and, in particular, Jamie and Brian, could have found a better person with your qualities," Colangelo said, directing his remarks at Bieser during his turn at the podium. "The man that you are, the goals that you have, can't be any better for the university. There's such a high regard for character and integrity here. You fit right in."Bieser will be hitting the transfer portal hard. He acknowledged the importance of building Arizona high school contacts, knowing how rich the state is in baseball talent. During a Q&A portion with the audience, he was asked if he's going to get any of his Jacksonville State players. He said there are qualities he looks for in players in the pursuit of winning. Among them are how they get to the ballpark early and approach their day. Perseverance, integrity, values, character, doing things right, will be priorities. "I want us to have and build the most fan-friendly stadium in all of college baseball," he said. "I want us to have the best player-development system. I want us to have the most player-friendly facilities here at GCU."We're not looking to be like anybody else. What we want to be is the standard in college baseball. We want to be a nationally respected program. My promise is simple. We honor God. We will represent Grand Canyon with excellence. And work every day to build a program that makes the university and the alumni very proud. That is my commitment."Richard Obert has been covering high school sports since the 1980s for The Arizona Republic. He also covers Grand Canyon University athletics and the Arizona Rattlers. H.S. BASEBALL: Marian Catholic’s PIAA state playoff run cut short by Southern Columbia
FOUNTAIN SPRINGS — The magic ride came to an end for Marian Catholic in the PIAA Class AA state quarterfinals on Thursday afternoon.Marian Catholic (20-5) served up five runs to Southern Columbia (17-4) in the first two innings of a 5-3 loss to end the miraculous playoff run.“They’re one of the top teams in the state and we just happened to run into two of them in the last three games,” Marian Catholic coach John Petrilyak said. “I’ll remember these kids and we did a really good job of blending the young guys with the older guys.”Southern Columbia advances to the PIAA Class AA semifinals next Monday, June 8 to take on the winner of the Halifax vs Faith Christian Academy matchup.Ayden Hockenbroch shot an RBI single to third base to put the Tigers ahead 3-0 in the first inning. Andrew Novak then gave the home team a 5-0 lead with an RBI single to second base in the second inning.“We take one game at a time, we’ll go celebrate this win and get back to work tomorrow,” Southern Columbia coach Mike Myers said. “It was nice to get runs and sometimes they come early and for us to come out to start the game like that was huge.”Southern Columbia didn’t have an answer at the plate the rest of the day as Levi Everitt pitched a complete game, allowing just three runs in the fourth inning and striking out six Colts.Kole Myers had two hits and drove in a team-high two runs to lead the Tigers lineup while Hockenbroch also chipped in with a pair of hits.“It’s been a goal of ours the whole season, we knew we could do this and now it’s becoming reality,” Kole Myers said. “We owe it to all these kids and we’re always working hard.”Everitt induced a pop out and flyout to start the game before Rocco Griguoli walked and was thrown out attempting to steal second base. The Tigers plated three runs in the bottom of the first inning as the first two batters reached base before Myers singled on a groundball to shortstop to score Brayden Andrews for the 1-0 lead.“Me and Brayden are always working together and we get in at least 100 swings a day, we’re always swinging hard and we try to do our best and be the 3-4 we need in the lineup,” Kole Myers said.Andrew Yost stepped up one batter later with an RBI groundball single into right field to score Caden Hopper for the 2-0 lead. Hockenbroch then singled on a groundball to third base to score Myers for the 3-0 lead.Everitt struck out two Colts in the top of the second inning before the Tigers brought home two more runs in the bottom of the second.Myers lifted an RBI double to right field which scored Andrews for the 4-0 advantage.“It let us relax having the early lead after the first inning and we got our composure back,” Myers said.Novak came through three batters later with an RBI groundball single to second base to score Myers for the 5-0 lead.Cole Jordan was called on to pitch in relief for the Colts in the second inning as Grier worked just 1.2 innings, allowing five runs on five hits. Jordan shut down the Tigers through 4.1 innings, allowing five hits and striking out three.“We went to Cole Jordan and he came in and threw fantastic, stopped the bleeding,” Petrilyak said. “He didn’t give up any more runs and for him to come in and do what he did and not having much time on the mound the last couple of weeks, he did really well.”Marian Catholic struck for the only time with three runs in the top of the fourth, beginning with a Jordan RBI groundball fielders choice to second base for the 5-1 deficit.Brayden Grant came up with a two-run double to left field to score Noah Bauder and Jordan for the 5-3 difference.“He’s the unsung hero and he doesn’t get enough credit,” Petrilyak said of Grant’s at bats. “Defensively he’s been great and now he might be our RBI leader at the plate in the seven hole.”Jordan retired Southern Columbia in order in the fourth and fifth innings. The Colts then turned a double play when Hopper grounded out to third base and Gavin Richards was caught in a rundown between third base and home plate. Jordan then struck out the last out of the sixth inning.Everitt recorded a 1-2-3 top of the seventh inning, striking out the last two batters he faced, to earn the 5-3 win.Danny Lemus led Marian Catholic’s lineup with three hits while Griguoli and Grant each had two hits. 2027 NFL Draft Summer Scouting Report: Jadan Baugh, RB, Florida
Summer is here, sort of, and it is everyone’s favorite time of the year, scouting time. Every year, we do Summer Scouting to preview college football for Bucs fans, but also give them an idea of names to follow and watch in the fall as needs pop up for Tampa Bay. Are we going to write about quarterbacks? Offensive tackles? Edge rushers? You know it, but why? Because other NFL teams will draft them, just as they will draft every other position. It all matters whether these players end up on the Bucs, the Bears, or the Steelers. We write these so Bucs fans can be the most informed fans. So if you are still with us, enjoy our latest Summer Scouting report as we prepare you for the Fall.FilmFlorida State TexasBackground InfoListed at 6-0/231 lbs.4-Star prospect according to 247 SportsAveraged 14 yards per carry in high schoolPlayed running back, quarterback, wide receiver, and defensive back in high schoolSecond-team All-SEC in 2025First Florida Gator to rush for 1,000 yards or more as an underclassman since Emmitt Smith did it in 1988Notable career stats heading into 2026353 Carries1,843 Rushing yards5.2 Yards per carry37 Receptions243 Receiving yardsReceived 74.1% of the carries out of the backfield in 2025Notable numbers from PFF heading into 20263.37 Yards per carry after contact97 Missed tackles forcedStrengthsRefuses to go down without gang tackles or proper techniqueContact balance for daysCan run through arm tacklesGood burst for his sizeExcellent in goal-line and short-yardage situationsPlayer SummaryJadan Baugh will enter the year as my RB1 by a decent margin. The Florida running back is in a special class in terms of Gator running backs, where he is doing things we haven’t seen since Emmitt Smith ran through the swamp. Baugh makes defenders miss at the line before showing his strength to run through arm tackles. His burst is especially impressive considering his size he has. He parlays that into also being efficient in short-yardage situations and at the goal line. What to know about the New World screwworm fly and its reappearance in the US
An adult New World screwworm fly sits in this undated photo. (Denise Bonilla/U.S. Department of Agriculture via AP)2026-06-04T19:05:06Z The New World screwworm fly is threatening the $113 billion U.S. cattle industry for the first time in more than a half century, with an infestation from its flesh-eating larvae confirmed in south Texas. The infestation was discovered in a single 3-week-old calf in La Pryor, Texas, about 100 miles (161 kilometers) southwest of San Antonio and 50 miles (80 kilometers) from the U.S.-Mexico border. Federal and state officials had been working to keep the parasite from reaching Texas, home to $17 billion worth of the nation’s cattle, making it the industry’s No. 1 state. The deadly flies were detected in Mexico late in 2024, after years of being contained at the southern end of Panama. The fly was an annual warm-weather scourge of cattle ranchers from at least the 1930s through the 1960s, until the U.S. eradicated the pest by breeding sterile male flies and dropping swarms of them from planes to mate with wild females. The USDA said the most recent case was the first in Texas since 1966. Here is what to know about the fly, the threat it poses and the response: Being unusual makes the flies a threatThe New World screwworm fly in the Western Hemisphere and its Old World cousin in Africa and Asia are unusual among flies because their larvae, or maggots, eat live flesh and fluids instead of dead material. Females lay their eggs in open wounds and mucous membranes after mating only once in their monthslong lives.Any warm-blooded animal, including wildlife, pets and occasionally even humans, can be infested. Livestock are vulnerable because of how they’re handled, Lee Haines, an associate research professor of biological sciences at the University of Notre Dame, said in an email Thursday. Standard practices with cattle can break the skin, including shearing and de-horning, or even moving them in and out of corrals can cause scrapes and cuts. Birth would also make a mother and calf vulnerable, she said. Stephen Diebel, a Texas rancher and president of the Texas & Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association, added that even wounds “as small as a tick bite,” can put cattle at risk. Read More Death can result if an infestation is not treated, though a dozen treatments have been approved for use in a variety of species. In decades past, ranchers had tens of millions of dollars in losses — potentially billions in today’s dollars. But agriculture officials were quick to note that the fly does not infest food, and U.S. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said it’s unlikely to damage beef production -- welcome news given that consumers are already facing record prices. Officials sounded alarms for nearly 2 years Federal and state officials and cattle industry leaders have been sounding public alarms about the fly’s movement through Mexico and toward the U.S. since a case was confirmed in southern Mexico in November 2024. Officials had considered the pest eradicated from Central and North America nearly two decades before an outbreak in Panana prompted a state of emergency there early in 2023, according to the joint U.S.-Panama program established in 1994 to stop the parasite. Cases jumped to Costa Rica and Nicaragua later that year. Edward Burgess, a University of Florida entomologist who studies the fly, said it reproduces quickly and is carried across wide areas by its hosts, namely wild animals such as deer. Outside of Panama, he said, programs that produced and released sterile flies have largely shut down.“It’s hard to stay ahead of it because of how fast that fly is able to move and regenerate,” Burgess said. Outside the US, thousands of animals and hundreds of humans sickenedAs of June 2, the parasite had sickened more than 171,700 animals and 2,000 people across Central America and Mexico, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. There have been 10 human deaths, the CDC says.Starting in May 2025, Rollins closed border entries to livestock and on Thursday she credited that move with delaying the fly’s arrival in Texas by a year. Rollins has argued that the Mexican government has not done enough to control animals moving within the country, a suggestion Mexican authorities have rejected. But Haines said climate change is a key element in the spread of a tropical species that thrives in warm weather. Warmer temperatures are expanding the fly’s habitat and cold snaps that killed them off each year in marginal habitats are becoming less frequent and less severe, she said. Officials quarantine a swath of TexasTexas State Veterinarian Bud Dinges imposed a 12-mile (20-kilometer) quarantine zone covering much of Zavala County, home to La Pryor, and a small part of neighboring Uvalde County. Animals cannot leave that zone without being inspected. Local ranchers are concerned that the fly will spread among wildlife, particularly deer, as a small, short-lived outbreak did in the Florida Keys in 2016. That was the last time a U.S. case was confirmed among animals, though the CDC confirmed a case last year in a Maryland man who had traveled to El Salvador and recovered. Zavalas County Sheriff Eusevio Salinas said Thursday that state officials were setting up several road checkpoints in the county to enforce the quarantine.“They said they were going to do that for three to four days, and hopefully after that it’s already under control,” Salinas said.In Texas, shots and fly dropsDiebel, whose family ranch is about 200 miles (322 kilometers) east of the quarantine zone, said ranchers are proactively giving injections that prevent screwworm infestation. They’re also taking extra care to treat wounds from ear tagging and other practices and keeping a close eye for signs of illness. The USDA has been dropping sterile flies in south Texas since February, when it opened a center for dispersing them in south Texas. It is now dropping them twice a week, for a total of 4 million flies, and it’s also putting 4 million more a week in the ground as pupae, flies in the stage between larvae and adult, said Rear Admiral Michael Schmoyer, a member of the USDA’s response team. Releasing sterile files is both time-tested and highly effective. While males are “promiscuous,” in the scientific sense, females are not, and if their one mating hookup is with a sterile male, no eggs from that female will hatch. Once sterile males are prevalent enough, the fly’s population declines and then dies out.But with sites outside Panama shut down for years, the USDA didn’t think sterile flies were being bred fast enough. It invested $21 million in a new fly-breeding facility in southern Mexico that is expected to start operations next month. The USDA also is spending $750 million to build a fly factory in southern Texas that can produce up to 300 million sterile flies a week. It is expected to begin operating next fall. JOHN HANNA Hanna covers politics and state government in Kansas for The Associated Press. He’s worked for the AP in Topeka since 1986. twitter mailto

Did Aaron Donald spell the end for Jared Verse’s Rams tenure? Cam Newton believes so
Did Aaron Donald spell the end for Jared Verse’s Rams tenure? Cam Newton believes so originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.Cam Newton is a pretty straight shooter; he usually calls it like it is on the football front. On his show this week, Newton brought up a meme that has been circulating since the Myles Garrett trade broke and used it to make a point that landed harder than most people expected."There's a meme that's going around, brothers and sisters," Newton said. "That we knew that ole boy's days were numbered, who got traded to the Cleveland Browns. Once Aaron Donald did a workout with him, and he was sitting down, and Aaron Donald was still out there pressing out them little push-ups."I haven’t found this meme yet, but what he is talking about is when Jared Verse challenged Rams legend Aaron Donald to a workout and learned a lesson after losing to who he called a “psychopath.”It got a rebuttal from his co-host, Omari Collins, who immediately said, “Verse was the Defensive Rookie of the Year,” but Newton did not walk it back; he just said louder:"The optics don't look good, Peggy."It would be hard to believe that the Rams would actually trade a defensive face of the franchise player over a workout video. But that would be a better rumor than to believe they traded him over his recent interview with Ruba Wilson. Then Cam said something that actually saved the argument and reframed the whole conversation in my mind.Per Newton, "There has never been a time that I knew that a follow-up team has had the Defensive Player of the Year and MVP on the same team the following year. That's something special. And it puts the owners to say, hey, I can see it now — the Los Angeles Rams are the team that everybody's gonna be playing with on Madden."That is a real acknowledgment. The Garrett trade, paired with Stafford's MVP season, creates a combination the league has not seen in the modern era. Newton got there, even if he took the scenic route. But he may be right that the opportunity to seize this moment was greater than what Verse brought to the table. He is a phenomenal bullrush pass rusher, but he was also a subpar finesse rusher with not many moves in his arsenal to offset his gifted bullrushing talent. When Newton was asked about the Verse side of the equation, he kept it blunt. On what sending Verse to Cleveland meant for the Browns:"It made it more unrealistic for them to win."Cam Newton didn't spare the Browns, eitherThat is a hard take for Browns fans who were ultimately teased during this offseason with the hopes that Deshaun Watson could potentially be back at his 2019 form and that, combined with Garrett on a ferocious defense, they could have been on the better side of the win column. But the toughest part of his comments was reserved for Cleveland."Now we have to see what Deshaun Watson does, because our best player that has been giving us relevance outside of Shedeur Sanders — they're in a pickle in that quarterback room."That is the real story for the Browns. Verse is an exciting acquisition, but he is walking angrily into an organization that still does not know who its starting quarterback is and isn’t even trying to win anymore. The draft capital helps, and the direction is at least more interesting than it was a week ago, but everyone knows Cleveland will just waste them. Newton was just nice enough to put into plain language what every honest sports fan already knows.Verse went from the best team in the NFL to the worst team in the NFL.

Christian Watson's Packers deal is latest data point for Chris Olave
It's widely known that the New Orleans Saints and wide receiver Chris Olave are in the midst of contract extension negotiations — and even Olave said recently that he feels like a deal will get done. But Olave's push for a new contract could have just gained another important data point.Green Bay Packers wideout Christian Watson reportedly agreed to a four-year, $110.5 million contract extension on Thursday, including a $31 million signing bonus. For the Saints, that number is significant as they continue navigating an appropriate average annual value for their 25-year-old standout wide receiver. Watson's deal does not give general manager Mickey Loomis and the front office an exact blueprint of what Olave's deal will look like, but it does help frame the market. The Packers' wide receiver has been a dynamic playmaker, but Olave has been more productive and consistent since entering the league. If Watson is now valued at more than $27 million per year, Olave's camp can now reasonably point towards that in contract negotiations. Both players were selected in the 2022 NFL Draft — and Olave has caught 158 more passes in just seven more games played, racking up nearly 1,500 more receiving yards. Watson's career-best season saw him go for 620 receiving yards, while Olave has eclipsed 1,000 in three of his first four seasons. That significance alone could very well propel Olave into the $30 million-per-season range. The Saints also have to consider the cost of waiting. Wide receiver prices rarely go down, and every new deal can push the market even higher for Olave. Getting something done before training camp could also prevent the situation from becoming a bigger storyline later in the season.Watson's extension may not directly set Olave's price, but it appears to have carved out the floor on what a deal would look like. Day by day, the argument that the Saints' top receiver deserves a major payday of his own continues to strengthen. This article originally appeared on Saints Wire: NFL Rumors: Saints WR Chris Olave's value increases with recent news

George Pickens is skipping Cowboys OTAs but Brian Schottenheimer isn't worried
The Dallas Cowboys have yet to have George Pickens join them for organized team activities (OTA's), but coach Brian Schottenheimer doesn't seem worried about his absence.Schottenheimer told reporters June 4 he had been in touch with Pickens, all while stressing the voluntary nature of the OTA sessions."[I] communicated with GP yesterday," Schottenheimer said, referring to Pickens by his initials. "He's got a football camp this weekend that he's doing."Schottenheimer also noted that communication with Pickens has "been good" and that the 25-year-old wide-out is "taking care of his business."That said, the second-year coach also acknowledged he hadn't yet spoken to Pickens about whether he would attend the team's mandatory session."I expect he'll be here," Schottenheimer said. "I think he's in a good spot. I know he's handling his business. I know he misses his teammates, and we miss him too. You guys know how we feel about him. We love him. This is just part of the business."Pickens' absence comes with the fifth-year receiver currently set to play the 2026 NFL season on the franchise tag. The Cowboys slapped him with the tender – worthy a fully guaranteed $27.3 million – before free agency and haven't yet signed him to a long-term extension.Dallas has until July 15 to ink Pickens to a long-term deal, but Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones communicated on eve of the 2026 NFL Draft the team isn't planning to negotiate a long-term deal with Pickens this offseason.Such an arrangement would put Pickens on track to become a free agent in 2027. It isn't clear whether he will orchestrate a holdout at any point as he seeks a long-term deal.NFL CONTRACTS: Puka Nacua, George Pickens among top WR extension candidatesBut even so, Schottenheimer is putting his faith in the young receiver to hit the ground running whenever he arrives at Cowboys camp."How do you prove to your teammates that you're doing everything in your power to be the best version of yourself if they don't see you doing that?" Schottenheimer asked rhetorically about player absences from OTAs. "I have no question George is prepared, just like I had no question that Micah was going to prepare or whoever."And while Pickens hasn't yet been on the field for OTAs, Dallas' other star receiver – CeeDee Lamb – has so far impressed Schottenheimer."CeeDee's had a great camp," the Cowboys coach said. "He looks awesome. He's jumping out of his shoes."This article originally appeared on USA TODAY: Brian Schottenheimer not worried about George Pickens' OTA absence

Derrick White on playing under Boston Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla with Jaylen Brown
Boston Celtics point guard Derrick White cleared up some misconceptions about his fellow teammates during a recent appearance on the "Run It Back" podcast. Rebel heart: West Morgan had dominant 2025-26 athletic year
Jun. 4—TRINITY — Coaches love their cliches.Whether it's "take it one game at a time" or "practice makes perfect," every coach has their own phrase they like to throw around."Success breeds success" is another common one, but that doesn't mean it isn't true. It's something the West Morgan Rebels know well, now that the school is coming off one of its best athletic years in school history.Starting in the fall, the football team completed its third consecutive undefeated regular season, pushing its regular-season winning streak to 34 games, and won its third consecutive region championship. Meanwhile, the volleyball team reached the Elite Eight of the state tournament. In the winter the boys basketball team reached its third consecutive Class 4A, Elite Eight, while the girls team reached the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2018.Finally, in the spring, the baseball team and boy soccer team both reached the Class 4A playoffs and the softball team reached the Class 4A state tournament for the first time since 2014.Quite the year."I think it's a testament to the leadership we have in place here, the vision they had for this school and what they've built here. They understood the importance of getting good people in the building that can lead our kids," West Morgan football coach Drew Phillips said. "I also think it's a testament to our kids. They've bought into what we're doing here and put in a lot of hard work."—Hitting the weightsAsk any coach of any sport and they'll likely tell you a key to success is found in the weight room.West Morgan is no exception as the Rebels believe it's what has unlocked the school's athletic potential."A few years ago we felt like we had great athletes but we weren't winning like we thought we should," Mike Johnson, the school's athletic director, said. "Me and Dr. (Keith) Harris sat down to figure out what we needed to do and the solution was simple; we needed to get tougher."So that's exactly what the Rebels set out to do and now they feel it has become their identity."The weight room is mandatory here. Our athletes don't have a choice in whether they lift and our coaches don't have a choice in whether they lift our kids," Phillips said. "Our athletes build speed and strength, but most importantly, they build confidence. We truly believe we can compete with whoever we step on the field or court against."If you work hard in the weight room, it gives back."—Sharing is caringAnother key to the West Morgan blueprint of success is having not just good coaches, but coaches who share a vision."It helps to have good coaches, but it's more important for us to have coaches that are all on the same page," softball coach Morgan Weatherwax said. "We're a small school, and we share a lot of the same athletes across multiple sports. We can't have the mindset that 'my sport is more important' and thankfully the coaches here want other sports to win as badly as the ones coaching those sports do."Weatherwax said the relationships between the coaches played a big part in her team's run to the state tournament."Before our area tournament the basketball coaches fed our team Zaxbys and then before regionals they fed us chicken biscuits with tea bombs," Weatherwax said. "Our girls got it in their heads that in order to succeed they needed their chicken biscuits and tea bombs so before state the coaches drove all the way to Jacksonville to our hotel and had us breakfast and tea bombs ready."I'm not saying that kind of thing only happens at West Morgan, but it certainly is not something you get everywhere."A similar vision isn't the only thing the coaches at West Morgan share.Being a 4A school, many of the athletes play multiple sports. The Rebels believe having success in one sport helps players in the next."Half of my (softball) team was on the basketball team that went to the Sweet 16. When we had a game on the line, I always felt comfortable because they had already experienced this before," Weatherwax said. "If a player can handle pressure in one sport, that carries over to the next sport."Now as the Rebels begin their summer workouts, coaches and players are focused on the next step: winning trophies."There's a lot of excitement around the school and the community right now. We're going to keep working and building toward bringing home a championship," Phillips said.— caleb.suggs@decaturdaily.com or 256-340-2395. Twitter @CalebSuggs2

Game #62: A’s at Cubs Game Thread
SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA - MAY 23: J.T. Ginn #35 of the Athletics prepares to pitch against the San Diego Padres during the first inning at Petco Park on May 23, 2026 in San Diego, California. (Photo by Orlando Ramirez/Getty Images) | Getty Images The A’s had an awesome come-from-behind victory last night, scoring two runs in the eighth to tie the game before taking a one-run lead into the ninth and holding on. That earned them win #30 on the year and pushed them past the Texas Rangers into second place, Right-hander J.T. Ginn will be tasked with finishing off the Cubs and helping the A’s to the sweep, something the squad hasn’t accomplished since early April. The 27-year-old is in the midst of a fantastic season and is looking to keep that going against a slumping Cubs squad. The Athletics’ lineup for tonight’s series finale shakes out like this:Last run in Chi-Town 🫡 pic.twitter.com/66gfkqJz33— Athletics (@Athletics) June 4, 2026A new man at the top as rookie center fielder Henry Bolte will bat leadoff this evening. He’ll be followed by the usual duo of Shea Langeliers and Nick Kurtz, while the hit-swinging Colby Thomas, who homered last night, bats cleanup. Soderstrom brings up the rear of the top half batting fifth. We have a couple regulars getting the day off as well in Brent Rooker and Darell Hernaiz. That means catching duties fall to Jonah Heim this evening while Alika Williams will handle shortstop. Second and third are occupied by the regulars in Jeff McNeil and Zack Gelof. As for the Cubs, they’ll be relying on righty Shota Imanaga to help them avoid the dreaded home sweep. Now in his third year in MLB, the 32-year-old has steadily declined since bursting onto the scene in 2024. He started off strong this year, posting a 2.32 ERA through his first nine starts. Things have quickly fallen apart for him over his last three appearances: eight earned runs, seven earned runs, and most recently five allowed to Cardinals. This recent cold streak has raised his season ERA over two full runs. He may be skidding but the Athletics’ batters have to be on their game tonight and hope this isn’t the game he figures things out. He’s only pitched once against the A’s, firing six innings of two-run ball back when the A’s were still in Oakland a couple years back. And the Chicago starting nine:Game three vs. the Athletics.Watch the game live on @WatchMarquee. pic.twitter.com/OAjelOxa1q— Chicago Cubs (@Cubs) June 4, 2026The Cubs are slumping but there’s still plenty of power and danger in that lineup if Ginn takes them lightly. Dylan Harper reposted De’Aaron Fox slander video on TikTok after Spurs’ NBA Finals loss
One of the biggest takeaways from the New York Knicks’ come-from-behind win in Game 1 of the 2026 NBA Finals is that the San Antonio Spurs blew it by leaving rookie guard Dylan Harper on the bench in crunch-time. The Spurs chose to ride with their $230 million man De’Aaron Fox in the last four minutes of regulation, and he missed an easy jump shot and then bailed out the Knicks with a stupid foul that helped swing the game for New York. Fox ended the night with seven points on 3-of-13 shooting in 38 minutes, while Harper was electric off the bench with 16 points. Right now, Harper feels like the better player even though he’s just 20 years old.A strange TikTok popped up on Dylan Harper’s page the day after the game. Harper reposted a video with the title “De’Aaron Fox seen honoring playoff James Harden after shooting one of his statline.” The video showed Fox’s 3-for-13 box score line next to Harden’s 3-for-13 line in the Cleveland Cavaliers’ Game 2 loss to the Detroit Pistons in the first round. The video is no longer on Harper’s page, but multiple people confirmed it was indeed there earlier. Watch the video here:Dylan Harper’s latest repost on TikTok 😳 pic.twitter.com/vctXS23FXf— The Strickland (@TheStrickland) June 4, 2026The most likely explanation here is that Harper accidentally reposted the video to his page without realizing what he was doing. Harper played 28 minutes in Game 1. Fox played 38 minutes. If Harper continues to be more effective, head coach Mitch Johnson will have to make a tough decision to sit a veteran for a rookie. Harden is a famous playoff dropper. I wouldn’t put Fox in that category yet, but he hasn’t been very good during this Spurs run. In his defense, Fox has been playing through an ankle sprain that he suffered in the Western Conference Finals. Harper is also playing through an abductor injury. I wouldn’t blame Harper is he felt frustrated with his role in Game 1 especially after such a hot start. He can’t air his grievances on social media, even if it was by accident. Chalk this up to a rookie mistake by Harper. He doesn’t make many of them.

George Kittle's praise for Mike Evans may be subtle dig at former WRs
San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle has been around long enough to know the difference between a capable receiver and a genuine game-changer at wide receiver. When it comes to Mike Evans, Kittle isn't hiding his excitement.Speaking publicly about San Francisco's offseason addition, Kittle offered a candid assessment of what Evans brings to an offense that has been searching for a true veteran No. 1 receiver for years"If you look back at the 49ers, this is the first legit veteran wide receiver I've had on my roster since Emmanuel Sanders in 2019," Kittle said. "Just to see him run routes and the way that he sees things, it's just so fun."George Kittle on Mike Evans:“If you look back at the 49ers, this is the first legit veteran WR I’ve had on my roster since Emmanuel Sanders in 2019. Just to see him run routes and the way that he sees things, it’s just so fun… Mike just brings a whole new thing. In the red… pic.twitter.com/xVR5QMKDdX— Coach Yac 🗣 (@Coach_Yac) June 4, 2026That's high praise for Evans, but it's a bit odd that Kittle neglected to mention Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel, who are the last receivers with 1,000 yards in a given year. Aiyuk had a great 2023 season with 1,342 yards and 1,015 yards in 2022. Samuel had 1,405 yards in 2021.Sanders, meanwhile, had just 502 yards in his 10 games with the 49ers in 2019.What Kittle might be referencing is someone who can single-handedly draw defenders away as well as make contested catches. Aiyuk and Samuel were never known to be those types of players, while Evans is a big-bodied pass-catcher who can dominate in the red zone, too.Or, perhaps the "veteran" phrasing is more important here. Aiyuk and Samuel were both relatively young when they broke out with the 49ers, but subsequently floundered due to injuries or contract issues. Evans, meanwhile, has been a near-lock to finish a season with more than 1,000 yards (except for 2025, when he was injured).Either way, adding Evans is huge for the 49ers offense and he'll undoubtedly be Brock Purdy's No. 1 target for as long as he remains on the team. This article originally appeared on Niners Wire: 49ers roster: George Kittle says Mike Evans is '1st legit' veteran WR

Dalton Rushing Gets Public Support From Max Muncy Amid Scrutiny
Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Dalton Rushing has been in the spotlight for his fiery on-field persona, creating a good deal of headlines.Rushing has been a top prospect with the Dodgers for years, taken early in the draft and coming with a high pedigree.View this post on InstagramA post shared by Dodgers Nation (@dodgersnation)At the start of 2026, Rushing has begun to figure things out, hitting the ball hard and often, finally making good on his high potential as a hitter with a great approach, bat-to-ball skills, and serious power. He can play at first base as well, and while he has not gotten too many starts due to Will Smith hogging the starting spot, Rushing has made the most out of his chances. Jun 22, 2025; Los Angeles, California, USA; Los Angeles Dodgers third baseman Max Muncy (13) celebrates with catcher Dalton Rushing (68) after hitting a grand slam during the sixth inning against the Washington Nationals at Dodger Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Kiyoshi Mio-Imagn ImagesIn 2025, Rushing only hit .204 with a .582 OPS; however, he is up to .264 with a .870 OPS. Additionally, as a catcher, is calling the game better than he did in his rookie season and catching the ball better behind the dish. While his contribution has been a welcome surprise, Rushing has also sparked considerable controversy, most of it from the outside baseball world. Muncy’s defense of RushingWhether it has been comments about the Colorado Rockies’ reading of pitches or a collision with San Francisco Giants outfielder Jung-Hoo Lee, his playstyle and manneeism have taken up a good deal of oxygen. Rushing plays with a good deal of ferocity, talking smack on the field and competing hard against the opposition.Muncy, a longtime Dodger, came to Rushing’s defense during a recent interview and does not believe Rushing should change anything about his approach. Apr 20, 2026; Denver, Colorado, USA; Los Angeles Dodgers third baseman Max Muncy (13) celebrates with first baseman Dalton Rushing (68) after the game against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field. Mandatory Credit: Isaiah J. Downing-Imagn Images“Well, he’s great as a teammate. You know, he’s a great kid. He’s well received in the clubhouse, and honestly, it’s just one of those things where, you kind of mentioned it, when he gets on the field, he plays a certain way, and that’s what makes him good,” Muncy said of Rushing on Foul Territory. “And that’s why, for us, we’ve stated several times as a team, we like to let guys be who they are. We don’t want to change who they are. If a guy needs to play a certain way to perform, we want him to play that way.“And when it comes to him, when he gets on the field, it’s a very football mentality. He might see red a little bit, but ultimately that’s what’s made him the player he is. It’s gotten him to the big leagues, and it’s gotten him the start that he’s had. That’s just how he plays the game. “The ironic thing is that’s not who he is in the clubhouse or who he is as a teammate. It’s just how it comes out on the field.”View this post on InstagramA post shared by Dodgers Nation (@dodgersnation)Rushing already provides a good deal of youth to an old Dodgers roster that needs some freshening up, and with the youthful energy comes the fistiness and lack of fear, both of which the young catcher has in spades.

Bayern Munich wants to give Arijon Ibrahimović a chance in the attack
Bayern Munich might have found its answer to the question of who will back-up Luis Díaz in 2025/26 — Arijon Ibrahimović.Ibrahimović had been considered a top prospect at Bayern Munich, but his shine began to dull a bit in 2023 as he had plateaued in his development. After scuffling for a few seasons on loans at Frosinone and Lazio, Ibrahimović hoped for the third time to be charm as he embarked on a new adventure at Heidenheim for 2024/25.While Heidenheim was relegated, Ibrahimović impressed pundits, fans, and Bayern Munich personnel alike with his play as he tallied two goals and five assists in 34 games across all competitions. Still just 20-years-old (seriously), the Bavarians want to give him a chance with the first team…if he wants it.Sky Germany journalist Kerry Hau has the details: FC Bayern has made Arijon Ibrahimović an offer to extend his contract. Another loan is not currently planned. He is expected to take on a role as a squad player who can fill in at various positions. If he does not extend, he will be sold – because his current contract only runs until 2027. Ibrahimovic now has to decide. Clubs from the Bundesliga, Premier League, and Eredivisie are showing concrete interest. @SkySportDE Ibrahimović moved all over the pitch in Heidenheim’s attack per Transnfermarkt: Left Wing: 15 gamesRight Winger: 10 gamesAttacking Midfield: 5 gamesLeft Midfield: 2 gamesRight Midfield: 1 gameIf Ibrahimović decides to stay at Bayern Munich he would — conceivably — save the club money as it would not seek to bring in another attacker. If you are a real cynic, though, you could perceive this as a story leaked to give Bayern Munich some bargaining power as Ibrahimović has reportedly garnered a lot of interest throughout Europe for his play at Heidenheim. Clark, Spaun part of four-way tie for lead at Memorial tournament
American JJ Spaun is in a four-way tie for the lead after the first round of the PGA Tour Memorial tournament (Dylan Buell)A pair of US Open winners in Wyndham Clark and JJ Spaun were in a four-way tie for the lead alongside Tommy Fleetwood and Ryan Gerard after the first round of the PGA Tour Memorial tournament on Thursday.Spaun, gearing up for his US Open title defense at Shinnecock Hills in two weeks, fired six birdies in his five-under par 67 at Muirfield Village in Dublin, Ohio, seizing his share of the lead with a birdie at 18 where he stuck his approach a foot from the pin.Clark rolled in a 45-foot eagle putt from the fringe at 15 and added five birdies in his five-under round while Gerard had an eagle, eight birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey.England's Fleetwood, meanwhile, had five birdies without a bogey, his solid short game proving key in a round in which he hit only seven greens in regulation."Scored," Fleetwood said of what he did well. "I got the most out of the round, totally."I got away with a couple of poor misses. Hit the pin a couple of times when it was going past. But in general I played OK."I just wasn't a hundred percent by any means with my ball control from the fairway with my irons. But still shot five-under, so it couldn't have been that bad," Fleetwood added.Spaun was delighted to get himself back atop the leaderboard after nearly letting his round get away with bogeys at the 11th and 12th."I thought I did well between the ears today," he said. "When I gave some back on 11 and 12, I could have probably let that round go. But just kind of hung in there."- A tough course -Masters champion Rory McIlroy had to bounce back from an early double-bogey, putting his approach from the fairway in the water at the par-four third. The world number two responded with birdies at the fifth, sixth and seventh and added another at 14 before a closing bogey in a one-under par 71."I felt like I played pretty well, for the most part," McIlroy said. "Especially after making that double on the third hole, to play the rest of the round in three-under was good."It's a tough course. You have to concentrate on every shot. The greens are very firm already, very fast. Get yourself above the hole, it's very tricky."I would like to hit a few more fairways, give myself a few more chances from the short grass, but overall, not a bad score to build from."World number one Scottie Scheffler, the two-time defending champion in the event hosted by Jack Nicklaus, got off to an even rockier start in his bid to become the first player to win the same event three years running since Steve Stricker won the John Deere Classic from 2009 through 2011.Scheffler's one-over 73 included two bogeys and a double-bogey at the par-three 16th, where he was in the water off the tee.Scheffler, who rebounded with his third birdie of the day at 17, admitted he was frustrated by the unpredictable, gusty winds that greeted the late afternoon starters."All you can do is just try to hit good shots," he said. "It can be very frustrating sometimes when you feel like you're hitting good shots and then you're going to the drop zone."bb/amz

How newcomers are in position to win Schooldays golf championship
In most years, champions of the historic Tennessean/Metro Parks Schooldays Golf Tournament on Brandt Snedeker's Tour have come close to winning in previous years. The three-day tournament for boys and girls ages 12-17 is in its 102nd year, and winners usually qualify for match play before being eliminated, or maybe even advance to the championship before losing. That may not be the case for the 2026 tournament. Neither of the two girls in the championship − Lyla Payne or Samantha Strothers − nor the No. 1-seeded boy − Wil Huddleston − headed into the semifinals has ever played before in the tournament. Those three will try to win the state's longest-running golf tournament in their first attempt."I heard about the Schooldays from a guy at my school (Clarksville)," Payne said. "He told my grandma to sign me up for it, and I'm glad he did. I like it.""I had never even heard of the Schooldays before a few days ago," said Strothers, who is from El Cajon, California. "We looked it up online, the course looked beautiful, and it looked like a lot of fun, so here we are. I've learned a lot about the history of the tournament since we've been here, and it is really interesting."Huddleston, who is from Maryville, had at least heard of the Schooldays."I've always wanted to play in this tournament, but have never been able to because it hasn't fit into my schedule," Huddleston said. "I really wanted to play in it based on all the great names who have played in it, like Brandt Snedeker and a bunch of other (PGA) Tour players that have won this tournament. It's such a big tournament, I wanted to play it."Payne, medalist in the June 3 qualifying round, and Strothers, the runner-up, breezed through the quarterfinals and semifinals of match play on June 4. Payne defeated both Emma Elkins of Hendersonville and Megan Uchrin of Nashville 7 and 6. Strothers defeated Kate Bixenman of Old Hickory 10 and 9 and her sister Emma Bixenman 8 and 6.Payne and Strothers will meet in the championship on June 5 at 7:30 p.m.Strothers has been the best player in the girls field off the tee, averaging 275 yards."I drove the ball a little further today, got to know the fairways a little better, took a lot more aggressive lines," Strothers said. "I also made a lot of putts, got to know these greens better. I spent more time (practicing) on the greens and stopped three-putting."Payne said she is not intimidated by Strother's long drives."My drives have also been the best part of my game in this tournament, but you also have to have a good short game to beat (Strothers), and I've got a good short game too," Payne said.Huddleston also made quick work of his opponent in the first round, defeating Brody Smithson from Gallatin 6 and 5. He then held off Aiden Hampton of Springfield 3 and 2 in the quarterfinals."(Smithson) was a very good young player, definitely had a good short game, but I just put up a couple of birdies and got hot, and I was up seven through nine, so he couldn't really come back," Huddleston said. "That gave me some confidence. I knew I could put up a bunch of birdies in the next round because I did in the first round."Huddleston put Hampton away by making a 30-foot birdie putt on No. 10, winning 11 and making a 60-foot birdie putt on 12.Huddleston will face Maxwell Hunt from College Grove in the semifinal. Carter Lomax from Gallatin gets Cillian Carmack from Pleasant View in the other semifinal. In the boys 12-14 division semifinals, Jackson Scott of Franklin defeated Jess Judy of Nashville 5 and 4, while George Armstrong of Franklin defeated Ethan Huang from Nolensville 4 and 3. Scott and Judy will meet in the finals. For the complete results and pairings, visit snedstour.orgReach Mike Organ at 615-259-8021 or on X @MikeOrganWriter.This article originally appeared on Nashville Tennessean: Schooldays golf tournament might have newcomers for champions

Panthers LB Devin Lloyd recalls full-circle interaction with franchise legend
Devin Lloyd's connection to Luke Kuechly began long before he became a Carolina Panther. In a recent interview with the team's radio play-by-play commentator Anish Schroff, Lloyd recalled a conversation he had with Kuechly in the midst of his jump to the pros. The fifth-year linebacker told Schroff that he spoke with the former Defensive Player of the Year and five-team first-team All-Pro soon after he was drafted in 2022, when Kuechly's agency attempted to recruit him.A consensus All-American at the University of Utah, Lloyd was selected with the 27th overall pick of that year's draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars. He went on to amass 436 combined tackles, 3.5 sacks and nine interceptions through the 2024 campaign—where he earned his first career Pro Bowl nod.Lloyd parlayed his standout season into a three-year, $42 million deal with the Panthers out of free agency this past spring. Given his production and playmaking ability, Lloyd is viewed almost as the heir apparent to Kuechly.Luckily for Lloyd, he shouldn't have a hard time reaching the Hall of Famer from now on.Follow @ThePanthersWire on Twitter/X for more Panthers content. This article originally appeared on Panthers Wire: Panthers LB Devin Lloyd recalls full-circle talk with Luke Kuechly

This Will Be The First World Cup Ever With AI Coaches On The Sidelines
The FIFA World Cup starts soon. For the first time, each team will have an AI coach.FIFA via Getty ImagesWhen Mexico kicks off against South Africa at Estadio Azteca on June 11, the 2026 World Cup will be the biggest in the tournament’s history: 48 teams, 104 matches, three countries. It will also be the first World Cup where every single team walks in with the same AI analyst sitting on the bench.Or maybe not exactly sitting. And not quite on the bench, either. Think of FIFA AI Pro more as a coach in the cloud, perhaps. With, of course, a perfect photographic memory of thousands of soccer games.Essentially, it’s ChatGPT for football (or soccer, depending on where you live). Co-developed by FIFA and tournament sponsor Lenovo and unveiled in January at CES, FIFA AI Pro is an AI assistant that lets all 48 World Cup teams query FIFA’s exclusive match data — millions of data points across 2,000+ metrics — and get tactical insights back as video, animated replays, and 3D avatars. Teams can ask FIFA AI Pro almost any kind of match-related question:How am I failing on offense? What setup leads to better outcomes against this opponent?Which players have historically defended best against Messi? What’s the best way to break through France’s defense?Which midfielders give my strikers the best balls? How FIFA AI Pro actually worksUnder the hood, Lenovo says it has analyzed more than 2,000 distinct metrics from thousands of games. In other words, this isn’t a generic LLM model that has been adapted for soccer. It uses FIFA's own tracking data, player telemetry, and historical tactical analysis — every camera angle and body sensor from every match — plugged directly into the back end."You can actually go ask ChatGPT who's going to win the match," one Lenovo executive told me. "But it doesn't have the data set."Only FIFA has all the data, making FIFA AI Pro potentially much smarter about its answers and recommendations. Analysts can compare team patterns using video and 3D avatars. Coaches can get a tactical sandbox: a place to test how a formation change might play out against their next opponent before trying it IRL. Players can get personalized analysis of their own game.According to FIFA, it keeps learning during the tournament. New match data will flow into the AI engine within two to three hours of the final whistle, so by the round of 16, FIFA AI Pro will be smarter than it is now. (And, of course, more up-to-date as teams try new tactics and see success or failure with them during the tournament.)This helps smaller teams more than bigger teamsThe big teams, the ones who are favorites to win or at least go far already employ rooms full of analysts, assistant coaches and maybe even data scientists. For them, FIFA AI Pro is probably a nice-to-have. It’s unlikely to be a revelation. But at the other end of the spectrum, this year’s field includes Curaçao and Cabo Verde, two of the smallest nations ever to reach a World Cup. Teams like that probably don’t have the budget to staff an analytics department. For them, an AI tool like this isn’t a marginal upgrade. It’s kind of the entire department, handed over for free.Of course, this is the first year FIFA will be using this kind of technology. So we’ll have to see if it really helps – does Moneyball work in football – or if good old fashioned soccer sense from coaches with decades of experience will still have an edge.At least theoretically now, however, FIFA AI pro will raises the floor and compress the analytics gap between the richest federations and the poorest ones. That’s a genuinely interesting factor to watch for: will we see more upsets this year than usual, or more exotic defensive or offensive schemes?Of course, everyone has it. And when every team gets the same tool, the tool itself stops being an advantage … if they all use it. In that scenario, the edge moves to who interprets it best and who actually acts on what it says, so there’s still a human coach making a human call. Also, another caveat: note the two-to-three-hour turnaround in processing match data. This is a preparation tool, not an in-match strategy engine. So humans are still in charge. My big question: will fans — and kids — ever get it?This is the question I kept circling back to, when chatting with Lenovo and FIFA executives. At CES, FIFA President Gianni Infantino said the tool would reach "fans as well." When I asked executives directly, the answer was a bit more guarded: nothing has been finalized. "We’ll take it under advisement," Lenovo CMO Milo Speranzo told me while emphasizing that this is still brand new. “Fans would go nuts over something like this, right? Fans would love to do something like this … couch coach … we do it all the time anyways, right?”However, it’s probably just a matter of time. And, I guess money. The desire, at least, is there.“Are any of the new technologies employed at FIFA going to trickle down to consumer products?” Speranzo said “As a technologist, the answer has to be yes, right?”If and how that works out, he added, will be largely up to FIFA.Lenovo points to AI-powered cameras already letting a single inexpensive setup capture and analyze a youth match … the kind of analytics that used to require a stadium’s worth of Hawkeye rigs. Stretch that out a few years and the same intelligence FIFA is handing its 48 national teams could plausibly reach a third-division side in the Netherlands, or a U12 squad in Ohio whose parent just wants to watch a game (and maybe second-guess the coach) while away on business. For now, FIFA AI Pro belongs to 48 teams and a handful of FIFA analysts.Impact on the games? UncertainIt’s not clear how much this new tool will impact games. Both FIFA and Lenovo executives are quick to point out that this is still a human sport with human decisions and human successes or failures. That’s literally why we want people in the World Cup, and not robots. But this will shape training sessions, set-piece planning, and how a coach approaches the next opponent. And because the dataset grows as the tournament progresses, the tactical reads should get sharper deep into the knockout rounds, right when margins are thinnest. But the tool only matters if a coach acts on it – and if it’s correct, of course -- so any edge FIFA AI Pro offers will still be fully dependent on human decisions. As it should be, I guess. This article was originally published on Forbes.com

Class B state softball quarterfinal roundup: Beavers rally for walk-off win over Avon
Jun. 4—ABERDEEN — A play at the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning was the difference in a Class B quarterfinal thriller between No. 4 seed Hanson and No. 5 Avon on Thursday at the Players Softball Complex.Having rallied from five runs down in the final frame to tie the game, Hanson's Delaney Jarding sprinted from second base to home plate on a batted ball that was bobbled but didn't leave the infield dirt with two outs. The gamble paid off, as Jarding was ruled to have barely beaten a tag in a close play at the plate, giving the Beavers a dramatic 11-10 walk-off win. Jozlynn Tegethoff provided the game-winning hit for Hanson, which had trailed 7-0 in the fourth inning and 10-5 in the seventh. All 11 of the Beavers' runs were scored in either the fourth or seventh frames.Jarding, Neecee Suber, Jacey Schoenrock and Rylee Furgeson all recorded two hits and scored two runs apiece for Hanson, which had 10 hits total. Furgeson and Marah Doyle each dive in two runs. Both teams had four errors.Hanson (19-4) advanced to state softball semifinals for the first time, as a meeting with No. 1 seed Castlewood awaits at 2 p.m. Friday. Avon (16-8) will play No. 8 Freeman/Marion/Freeman Academy in the consolation bracket at 10 a.m. Friday.A late surge carried top-seeded Castlewood past 8-seed Freeman/Marion/Freeman Academy in the Class B tournament opener on Thursday.FMFA, which was the No. 14 seed entering the SoDak 16, held a 3-2 lead entering the bottom of the fifth inning, but there the Warriors came alive for four runs to swing the contest in their favor.Claire Loofbourrow accounted for all three Phoenix runs, coming around to score once and driving in Aubree Tschetter twice. Tschetter reached safely three times, including twice via walk, and stole three bases. Harli Ross pitched five innings in her start, striking out seven against just one walk but surrendering six runs (four earned). For Castlewood, Cydni Kudrna, Kayla Goens and Natalie Akin all had two hits, and Goens drove in three runs. Sophia Kudrna pushed across a pair of runs. Claire Horn went the distance for the pitching win, recording 11 strikeouts while yielding three walks, five hits and one earned run.The Warriors out-hit FMFA 9-5, and each team had four errors.Castlewood (19-4) will play Hanson in the semifinals at 2 p.m. Friday, while FMFA (11-8) plays No. 5 Avon in the consolation bracket at 10 a.m. Friday.Making its state softball tournament debut, second-seeded McCook Central/Montrose had little trouble, dispatching No. 7 seed Redfield via a five-inning run-rule decision. The Fighting Cougars scored five runs apiece in the second and third innings and added three in the fourth. MCM racked up 12 hits and six walks in the shortened contest, as Landry Andal and Braylee Meyer each had three hits and scored three runs. Jolie Westrum earned the pitching win in a complete game effort where the only run she allowed was unearned.Taylor Vavruska had two of the Falcons' three hits and scored the lone run.Gayville-Volin (15-5) looks for another upset in the semifinals against No. 2 MCM at 2 p.m. Friday. Murder charge dropped for Arkansas sheriff nominee who killed daughter’s alleged abuser
This undated photo provided by attorney Erin Cassinelli shows Aaron Spencer, a Republican candidate for sheriff in Lonoke County, Arkansas, who won a GOP primary March 3, 2026, defeating the incumbent sheriff to advance to the general election despite awaiting trial for a murder charge. (Heather Spencer/Erin Cassinelli via AP, File)2026-06-04T22:50:06Z A judge has dismissed a murder charge against an Arkansas man who won the GOP nomination for sheriff while awaiting trial for the shooting death of his teenage daughter’s alleged abuser.Special Circuit Court Judge Ralph Wilson Jr. dismissed the case against Aaron Spencer Thursday afternoon — just a few weeks before his trial on the second-degree murder charge was expected to begin — because a dash camera memory card that may have captured the shooting was lost by law enforcement. In March, Spencer won the GOP nomination over a three-term incumbent sheriff whose office had arrested him on the murder charge in Lonoke County, which has roughly 76,000 residents and is heavily Republican.“The court finds that conduct by law enforcement was so egregious that dismissal of this case is warranted,” Wilson wrote.Spencer’s attorneys did not deny that he shot and killed Michael Fosler, 67, in 2024. At the time, Fosler was out on bond after being charged with dozens of sexual offenses against Spencer’s then-13-year-old daughter. Court documents show on the night of the shooting, Spencer had woken up to find his daughter missing, and later found the girl in the passenger seat of a vehicle Fosler was driving. Spencer forced Fosler’s truck off the road and, after an altercation, called 911 to report he had shot the man. Prosecutors said Spencer planned the killing and that he could have called police while pursuing Fosler. But Spencer pleaded not guilty, and maintained he acted to protect his child from a predator. Read More Spencer’s attorney, Erin Cassinelli, said she is thankful for the court’s decision.“No member of this family should ever again be forced to walk into a courtroom and relive this horror,” she said in a statement. “This father should have never been charged for protecting his child.”Lonoke County Prosecuting Attorney Chuck Graham did not immediately return messages Thursday seeking comment on the decision. The Associated Press typically does not identify sex abuse victims, but Spencer has made his daughter’s experience with the criminal justice system a central part of his campaign for sheriff, pledging to establish a dedicated team to combat sex crimes against children.Spencer’s attorneys filed the motion seeking to have the case dismissed, contending that video and audio of the dash camera from Fosler’s truck may have contained evidence that would have cleared Spencer of any wrongdoing. According to court records, a detective with the Lonoke County Sheriff’s Office removed the dash camera from the truck when responding to the scene of the shooting. But the camera’s internal settings were not preserved and the battery of the camera was allowed to drain, and as a result the camera went back to its default settings. When the camera was sent to the attorney general’s office for a forensic exam, the memory card that was in it when it was collected from the truck was missing. The detective who collected the camera later admitted that it was not logged into evidence right away, but was instead stored in his personal office rather than the evidence room, according to court records. Wilson replaced the original judge handling the murder case in January after the Arkansas Supreme Court removed Judge Barbara Elmore from the case, finding she had issued an overly broad gag order that violated Spencer’s First Amendment rights.—-Boone reported from Boise, Idaho. Associated Press reporter Hallie Golden in Seattle contributed. REBECCA BOONE Boone is a correspondent who covers breaking news, the courts, accountability issues and more for The Associated Press. Top schematic trend to watch in 2026 NFL season: Will the game speed up or continue to slow down? Rams could give us the answer
The NFL is constantly cycling. What’s en vogue gets copied around the league, the other side of the ball adjusts, we reach a (short) state of equilibrium, and then a new (or refurbished) change happens to adjust for the adjustment, and the cosmic ballet goes on. One of my favorite aspects of doing my job is looking forward, and predicting and anticipating what the trends for the upcoming season might be. Last summer, I looked at how new kickoff rules and increased coaching aggression will change how third downs are treated in terms of running the ball, how teams will look to run the ball more to take advantage of the changing size of defenders (which they did: NFL teams ran the ball at the highest rate since 2008 and had their highest leaguewide rushing success rate on running back runs since 2004), and how there might be an increased frequency of personnel groupings featuring two or more tight ends; it’s a prediction that not only came to fruition in terms of usage and success (see: Los Angeles Rams), but also continued to be a talking point (one that’s been exhaustively covered) throughout the offseason with free agency and especially the draft. Looking back in football is necessary, whether it’s for film review or for a player archetypes in scouting. Looking back should also be used to look forward. A head coach stewing on hot trends can leave them in the dust as the league quickly adapts and finds the next way to gain or stop an extra yard. The old saying is that the NFL stands for “Not For Long,” and that applies in a lot of ways, including staying on the bleeding edge of where the NFL, and football in general, are going.Play 2026 Soccer Pick 'Em with FOX One and make your picks for the world's biggest soccer tournamentAnd while there are a few scheme and play-related gizmos I want to touch on in this piece, there’s one aspect with NFL offenses that has caught my attention that I am going to be keeping an eye on throughout this season.Yes, it has to do with the Rams. No, it does not have anything to do with their bevy of tight ends. That one thing is speed. Not player speed, but the speed between plays. In 2025, NFL offenses played at the slowest pace in years.Kliff Kingsbury is taking his no-huddle heavy concepts to the Rams, pairing with head coach Sean McVay. (Photo by Perry Knotts/Getty Images)Perry Knotts via Getty ImagesMotion takes time, slowing the game down. How are defenses reacting? In terms of time of possession, NFL offenses took an average of 29.6 seconds between plays in 2025. That’s the longest since at least 2000, which is as far back as TruMedia’s data goes. NFL offenses were playing at this pace even with Kliff Kingsbury and Chip Kelly calling plays (well, for part of the season at least), two thrill seekers masquerading as play-callers. In 2020, that number was 28.1 seconds and in 2015 it was 28.2 seconds. But it cracked 29 seconds for the first time in 2024. In average play clock terms, NFL offenses snapped the football with 9 seconds left on the dial. A full second and a half lower than the marks of 10.5 the prior two years, which was the prior low going back to 2019. Why? Well, offenses are varying up personnel groupings, using motion, and they have to sort through what were once called “exotic” defensive looks that are looking more domesticated by the year. Motion, naturally, takes time. The play-call verbiage to get to motion, or multiple motions, or multiple plays with motion or multiple motions, can be verbose. The motion talking point is a little trite in 2026, but it really is notable when you look at the numbers. NFL offenses used motion on 46.2% of their snaps in 2018, per NextGenStats. That number was 63.3% in 2025. Motion at the snap has more than doubled from 16.8% in 2018 to 36% in 2025. Plays with multiple motion have steadily risen as well. People moving from spot A to spot B takes seconds off the clock. The vocabulary needed to get everyone aligned takes seconds off the clock. The Shanahan coaching tree, among others in the NFL, has recognized not only the benefits of using motion to change the picture for defenses (again look at those motion at the snap numbers), but just the simple need of doing so to combat what defenses are doing. And what are defenses doing? They’re playing more zone coverage, particularly Cover 2, and they’re disguising it as much as possible, even with the constant pre-snap shenanigans offenses are throwing at them. Defenses have reacted and adapted to what offenses have been throwing at them by putting a lid on their entire operation. Changing up looks, flooding passing lanes and getting quarterbacks to hold onto the ball for one of their looping pass rush plans to get home.Defenses are pushing deeper in coverages and are allowing more space on throws underneath, and they are tackling better than ever. Leaguewide missed tackle rates have dropped from 14.1% in 2018 to 12.6% in 2025, which is the lowest rate in NextGenStats’ database. Group tackle opportunities have shot up, a beneficial byproduct of playing more zone coverage: NFL defenses combined for 80.9 group tackle opportunities per game in 2018. That number was 98 in 2025. With more eyeballs on the football, it can limit the damage a player can do with multiple defenders keying on them instead of just one player losing, leading to a big offensive play. Yards after catch has dropped from 5.9 yards in 2018 to 5.4 in 2025. It’s not just on pass plays as explosive runs (gains of 12 yards or more) on designed plays reached an all-time low of 7% in 2025. With safeties, or some defender because of all of the inverting and disguising defenses do now, playing deeper, there is a natural tendency for quarterbacks to throw shorter, and they are about a half yard shorter relative to the first-down marker than a decade ago, and if in a quarters coverage call having the safety being a part of the run fit, then there is a clamp put on run plays, too.Offense’s evolving weapons: Floods, sails and no-huddle concepts So, what do I think offenses can do? Quarterbacks have to be more comfortable pushing the football downfield. And if defenses are allowing offenses to throw the ball underneath, then trying to do something to add some venom to those concepts as well. The easy buttons of before don’t work as often as they used to. One example is a swing checkdown that’s being paired with a player chip blocking and then releasing as a lead blocker; turning what is usually a rally and tackle situation into a solo screen that can turn into something much more than a simple 3-yard gain while defenders hold up their fists to signal fourth down. They can flood coverage areas with passing concepts that have multiple routes working in one direction. Like the appropriately named “Flood” concept featuring three outbreaking routes that I broke down the Bears running here: They can continue to use motion in an attempt to gain that angle or extra step on the ever intelligent defenders and defensive play-callers. Quarterbacks and play-callers become more comfortable attacking deeper with longer developing concepts (a strain on the offensive line, which is why you often see teams pair play action with those concepts in an attempt to alleviate some of that stress). Or, if defenses want to disguise and move around as much as offenses are in today’s game, instead of reinventing the wheel, they can just use the wheel. Or more appropriately, use the wheel and spin it really fast. The use of no-huddle for stretches of game or even basing an entire offense out of not huddling is not new at any level of football. Think the Bills with the K-Gun offense to Peyton Manning with the Colts, to even just last year with the Washington Commanders with Kingsbury as play-caller. Offenses go fast, or threaten to go fast, to keep defenses simplistic. Or at the very least limited in what they can call. What does this have to do with the Rams? Well, their new assistant head coach happens to be Kliff Kingsbury. And while Kingsbury is labeled as an “Air Raid” coach, one of his better qualities was the ability to get to a pretty varied gameplan menu while not huddling the offense for nearly two-thirds of his offense’s plays. I am truly trying to avoid going full galaxy brain here. I do think teams will try to keep defenses out of their perfect play-call and into something more static and basic but speeding up the game on them. I mean, they can’t go any slower than they were last year, can they? There were other teams that used tempo out of 2-minute situations to effectiveness last year, too. The Saints under Kellen Moore would sprinkle in a couple of drives every game to keep defenses simplistic for his inexperienced quarterbacks. And it’s not just an old coaching adage that defenses become more simple when sped up: on early-down plays outside two minutes of each half, defenses blitzed on dropbacks 20.4% of the time when in a no-huddle situation. That number was 27.1% when huddled. And even if an offense isn’t exactly majoring in no-huddle, being able to base a fairly large menu out of it can be a nice change-up to throw at the league’s better defenses. Especially against a defense like, say, the Seahawks, who feature a bunch of high-end communicators on with hyperspecific gameplans from head coach Mike Macdonald. Snapping the ball before a defense can recognize the play it scouted and practiced against that week can lead to one key blown assignment or missed tackle, or not allow the group to rally for a tackle, leading to a big play for the offense. I have described Macdonald’s scheme as “kaleidoscopic” because of its ever changing picture for quarterbacks and offensive lines. But, in just snaps I watched when the Seahawks were playing against an unexpected no-huddle situation, that coverage call was pretty consistently one of two calls (which was probably one call that adjusts based on offensive formation). And offenses were able to hit explosive plays at a higher clip against the Seahawks, too. Speeding up the snap also can catch defenses attempting to do something tricky. Simulated and creeper pressures will drop a defender from the line of scrimmage and blitz another, but who goes where can be based off of the offensive look. Or even if a defense gets to a more extravagant play-call and pressure, the ball snapped early can catch the defender far away from the line of scrimmage with too much room to cover to do any real damage on the play.Back to the Rams. And I know they’ve been in the news a bunch lately with the Myles Garrett trade, but I promise I was working on this piece beforehand. The Rams huddled on 5.4% of the time outside 2 minutes of each half in 2025. It was the lowest mark in a steady decline of no-huddle rates under Sean McVay that once topped out at 17.1% in 2018. This was a part of McVay’s offensive philosophy early in Los Angeles: constantly using the same 11 (1 RB, 1 TE, 3 WRs) personnel grouping with the same five skill players on the field. Not giving defenses any tendency to go off that might tip the upcoming play’s intent. Another feature of those Rams offenses was their use of no-huddle and changing tempos on defenses. The Rams would constantly take advantage of defensive personnel caught in bad situations by quickly getting to the line of scrimmage after a big play. They would also get to the line of scrimmage quickly, use a motion, fake a snap, and then have McVay bark a play-call to then-quarterback Jared Goff over the headset before the play clock reached 15 seconds (when the communication shuts off in quarterbacks’ helmets). Goff would then communicate the final concept to the rest of the Rams. To great effect, too. Defenses had to stay on their toes with the threat of the ball getting snapped quickly. And because McVay based so much of the offenses out of just a few formations and motion looks. It cleaned up the look for McVay to get to his preferred play-call and also the coverage for Goff to diagnose after the snap.Offenses aren’t in any dire place right now, but defenses have clapped back hard on the popular offensive concepts of the past decade or so. They’ve adapted to all the types of motions that offenses have been throwing at them. They are getting quarterbacks to throw the ball shorter, they are rallying to tackle and making the stop at a higher clip than ever before (and a lower average depth of yardage, too). They are making outdated protection schemes, like the one the Patriots “used” in the Super Bowl against the Seahawks, look silly. Protection is another aspect in the NFL that I will be keeping tabs on throughout this season. As defenses have gotten smarter with the protection rules that NFL offenses use, I’ll be watching to see if offensive line coaches and play-callers continue to vary and modernize their protection schemes this season, too. This is one way play action helps. It can change the angles of blockers and even add to the number count by pulling linemen, tight ends and even wide receivers. Throwing a bolo punch, like dropping back from under center without any play action on early downs can also be a nice way to keep defenses with highly detailed opponent scouting guessing. NFL teams will look everywhere to score and stop points. These are just a few threads that I pulled on. Some ramblings of a mad man. What unfolds throughout a season often leads to some of the biggest, or at least some of the most interesting, plot points and storylines. I have no doubt play-callers will come up with fresh, or refurbished, ideas in 2026 to do the very same thing.

Fenwick walks off Roger Bacon to win regional baseball championship
When Doc Wieland took over as head baseball coach at Bishop Fenwick High School, he knew he had a talented team that could go places after some tournament experience last year.Wieland was right. The Falcons are going north next week to the Ohio High School Athletic Association state tournament after a thrilling walk-off win in the regional finals.Fenwick (22-8) edged Roger Bacon (21-9) 5-4 in the Division IV, Region 16 final at Day Air Ballpark, home of the Dayton Dragons. It is Fenwick's first regional title since 1982.They will play in the state semifinals June 13 in Akron against Richmond Edison or Lancaster Fairfield Union, who played later June 4. First pitch is 1 p.m. June 13.Fenwick scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to come from behind. With the bases loaded, senior Boyd Westerfield hit a grounder to the hole in shortstop. Bacon freshman Grayson Spears threw home but junior Isaac Barker beat the throw to score the winning run.Fenwick came from behind in the seventh for the second time in a week after rallying from two runs down to beat Urbana in the district final.“We did it before,” Westerfield said. “Urbana, I thought we were out. We scored five runs in the seventh, and we got the job done against Urbana. We know we got more, and that's exactly what we did there.”Westerfield, No. 6 in the order, just wanted to put a good swing on the ball.“That’s exactly what I was going for. I was just looking for that fastball to drive. Got the job done,” he said. “I've been in a slump recently. Glad I could do it for us.”Fenwick trailed 4-3 with the top of the order coming up. Hudson Kreke was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Sophomore Carter Shouse singled to left, his third hit of the game. Barker bunted to third base and placed it well enough that he easily made it to first.“We get our first two guys on, and then Barker, our three hole, has been one of our best hitters,” Wieland said. “He had a tough AB (last time), took a third strike. He went up there. He was wanting to hit, but we got to bunt in that situation. That's good baseball. And he just executed a perfect bunt. Forgot about his last AB.”The cleanup hitter, senior Jackson Kauffman, hit a hard groundball to third baseman Terrance Todd, who threw Kreke out at home.Senior Jude McCullough singled to left, scoring Shouse for the tying run, sending Westerfield up with the bases loaded and one out for the winner.“It's special. One through nine, one through nine. Incredible players. We have the most talented roster I've seen,” Westerfield said. “Unbelievable, amazing. It means so much as a senior. Our whole team, it means so much to our coach. It means so much to everyone. I love it.”Another senior, Ty Miller, got the win in relief after coming on in the second inning for Fenwick ace Carter Shouse.Shouse left the mound in the second inning after throwing one pitch to the third batter of the frame.Wieland and a trainer came to the mound to check on him. After a few minutes, he went to right field as senior Miller warmed up on the mound to replace him.Wieland said it’s likely forearm tightness in his left throwing arm, which he has dealt with before.“He’s such a tough kid. I knew something had to be bothering him,” Wieland said. “He's a strong kid. I've never coached a kid that's a harder worker.”Shouse hit a batter and walked one in his brief time on the bump. Miller came in pitching 21 innings for the year, allowing 10 hits and striking out 30 with an ERA of 1.94.Miller started in right field and got a full pitching warmup before play resumed. Wieland said his first choice was junior Anthony Snyder, who pitched two days ago in the regional semis, but he had let Snyder go one pitch over the allowed limit and couldn’t pitch Thursday. Miller stepped up.“Ty knew he was going to be in relief, but we had talked about him warming up later in the game if we needed him,” Wieland said. “To his credit, he came in right from right field, like he has two or three times, and been huge for us.”Fenwick gave Miller a lead in the bottom of the third. Junior Nick Bachmann was retired as second baseman D.C. Gipson made a great running catch behind the bag. Conner Enderle, the No. 9 hitter, singled and went to second on a wild pitch. He scored on a single by leadoff hitter Hudson Kreke, who eventually went to third. Shouse was walked intentionally, then Isaac Barker plated Kreke on a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.Senior Jackson Kauffman, the cleanup batter, singled in Shouse to give the Falcons a 3-0 lead.Bacon scored four in the fifth, loading the bases with two outs on a walk, hit batter and single by Terrance Todd, their first hit. With the bases loaded, senior Kyle Miller hit a triple to right center that just eluded the two outfielders to score three. Senior Ian Childress hit a single through the hole to left field to put the Spartans ahead. In the bottom of the fifth, Shouse doubled with one out off reliver Colin Schulte. Schulte walked a batter with two outs but retired Jude McCullough on a grounder to end the threat.Ty Miller shrugged off that big inning. In the seventh, he allowed a triple to lead off the inning, to Bacon’s leadoff hitter, Ben Powers. Miller struck out the next two batters and got the next to fly out to give Fenwick a chance to win it.“I know Carter's obviously our dude, and we want him out there, but I knew that I was going come in, put the ball over the plate, and just give us an opportunity to go deep in this game,” Miller said. “I just knew that as a senior and that this possibly could have been my last game out here on the baseball field, I just knew that I had to give everything that I had. I knew that my guys obviously were going play defense behind me and I knew we had it in us.”This article originally appeared on Cincinnati Enquirer: OHSAA Division IV, Region 16 regional baseball finals, Fenwick, Bacon

4-star Washington football OL target crystal balled to Big Ten rival
The Washington Huskies have put themselves firmly in the mix for some of the top offensive linemen in the West in the 2027 class.Among the prospects at the top of the board for position coach Michael Switzer is four-star Lincoln Mageo, who is ranked as the nation's No. 360 overall prospect and No. 17 interior offensive lineman by the 247Sports Composite, but the road may have just gotten tougher to secure his commitment. On Tuesday, Rivals' Ethan McDowell logged a crystal ball prediction for the Michigan Wolverines to come away with Mageo's pledge when he announces his commitment on July 11.Mageo is set to choose from a top seven of Arizona, Michigan, Ohio State, Texas, UCLA, and Utah, alongside UW. He's already taken official visits to check out the Wildcats and Utes, and has trips lined up to see the Wolverines on June 5 and Longhorns on June 12 before he finishes things out with the Huskies on June 19.NEW PREDICTION: Michigan is building momentum with a priority 4 ⭐️ recruit who already scheduled his commitment date. 👀Details: https://t.co/rxGPultCM0Join with our summer special deal for 50% off: https://t.co/vUV2442n6mpic.twitter.com/ZMXxGiaGLs— Ethan McDowell (@ethanmmcdowell) June 2, 2026As the Huskies look to build out their depth along the interior of the offensive line, Mageo is a great fit for the offensive scheme that Jedd Fisch and Switzer have installed on Montlake."He moves well for his 280-pound frame and consistently executes combo blocks and makes contact with second-level defenders from either spot," Huskies Wire's Alex Katson wrote in an evaluation of Mageo. "Down the field, Mageo continues to look for work, often sealing off defenders, then turning to remove another player from the play rather than staying latched to his man longer than necessary."When Mageo takes his official visit, he'll be flanked by five other offensive linemen: four-star prospects Gecova Doyal and DaJohn Yarborough, and three-stars Reis Russell (UW's lone commit at the position), Tristan Dare, and Tye Kennedy. This article originally appeared on Huskies Wire: Four-star Washington Huskies OL target crystal balled to Big Ten rival

Arizona Cardinals OLB Josh Sweat 'not happy' in offseason
As the Arizona Cardinals concluded voluntary OTAs this week, two player absences have been noticed. One is outside linebacker Josh Sweat, who led the team with 12 sacks in 2025 after signing a four-year, $76.4 million deal in free agency. While a report insists the Cardinals will not be trading Sweat, ESPN's Dan Graziano adds information that Cardinals fans have been fearing. He isn't happy. Graziano includes Sweat as one of 10 players who are trade candidates, but this nugget is why Cardinals fans should worry some. Sweat is staying away from Arizona's offseason program and letting it be known he's not happy there. Why isn't he happy? Perhaps it was because they fired Jonathan Gannon as head coach. Perhaps it was expecting to join a team with playoff hopes and ending up on a three-win team with little hope of success in 2026. Whatever the reason, it puts the Cardinals in a tough spot. He is their best pass rusher. They didn't do anything in the offseason to add to the position. They can't afford to trade him. However, if he is unhappy and doesn't want to play for them, he is hard to keep around. New head coach Mike LaFleur can ill afford a malcontent in the locker room. He is a productive player with a good contract for a team acquiring him, but the Cardinals don't want to lose him. Between Jacoby Brissett's contract dispute and Sweat's unhappiness, it is just more drama the Cardinals don't need. Brayan Bello Now Has Worst ERA In Baseball
Brayan Bello Now Has Worst ERA In Baseball originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.Unfortunately for Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Brayan Bello, his starts have generated headlines all season. Regardless of where you fall in the argument over using an opener, one fact remains: Brayan Bello now has the worst ERA in baseball.Interim manager Chad Tracy elected not to use an opener in Thursday afternoon's midday start against the Baltimore Orioles. Less than 24 hours after rookie pitcher Payton Tolle spun six scoreless innings against the Orioles lineup in an 8-1 win, the Red Sox lost the third and final game of the series 8-2. Bello's first pitch of the game was put into the right-center field gap by Taylor Ward. He hit the next batter before Adley Rutschman, batting cleanup, drove in the first run of the game with a single to center. A double play set the Red Sox up to get out of the inning with minimal damage. But Bello walked the next batter, beginning a string of seven straight batters reaching base safely. When it was all said and done, Bello allowed six runs in the first inning. He threw three scoreless frames after, but was touched up again in the fifth, bringing his final stat line to eight earned runs on seven hits and three walks in five innings pitched. Bello's season ERA jumped to 6.34, good for dead last among 72 qualified starting pitchers in the MLB. Among those same 72 pitchers, Bello has thrown the least amount of innings, allowed the most earned runs on the third-most hits, and has the second-fewest strikeouts. His season continues to be among the most bizarre in recent memory for a Red Sox pitcher. Just in May alone, he has two shutout starts, two starts in which he allowed just one run, and two starts in which he gave up more than seven. Some days Bello is the Cy Young; other days, he is far from it. More MLB: Red Sox Triple-A Team Set To Face Trio Of Star Blue Jays Pitchers On Rehab
