Board members called this nonbinary teacher a groomer. Now the district has to pay up.
An Arizona school district has settled a discrimination lawsuit brought by a former teacher who is nonbinary. As The Arizona Republic reports, River Chunnui sued the Peoria Unified School District and two members of its governing board, Heather Rooks and Rebecca Hill, last year, alleging discriminatory, retaliatory, and torturous actions based on Chunnuis gender identity. Related Trans teacher files human rights complaint after Libs of TikTok doxxes them Wilson says they are the victim of hateful and violent messages sent by a parent of one of their students. According to their March 2024 complaint, the former Desert Harbor Elementary School special education teacher sent a March 31, 2022, email informing fellow staff members of how they could support and acknowledge trans and nonbinary students on International Transgender Day of Visibility. After their email began circulating online the following week, Chunnui was placed on administrative leave and informed that they were being investigated for two alleged instances of unprofessional conduct: sending the email and reading the childrens book Pink Is for Boys to students. Insights for the LGBTQ+ community Subscribe to our briefing for insights into how politics impacts the LGBTQ+ community and more. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Chunnui was ultimately cleared of the allegations and returned to work the following July, but claims that during the investigation, Rooks and Hill launched a smear campaign against them, publicly accusing them of grooming and sexualizing children. The lawsuit alleges that Rooks shared Chunnuis March 2022 email on social media, organized prayer vigils for Chunnui, and urged others to speak up against Chunnui at a school board meeting.Chunnui claimed that over the subsequent year, they endured relentless harassment and discrimination as a result of Rooks and Hills smear campaign and the districts failure to address the situation. Chunnui claims they received repeated harassing phone calls, emails, and social media messages parroting Rooks and Hills accusations of grooming and of sexual attraction to minors, and that their home and car were vandalized. The suit also claims that after Rooks joined the Peoria Unified School District governing board in January 2023, she and Hill attempted to have Chunnui fired by introducing a motion at a March 2023 board meeting to have their name removed from the districts contract renewal list. Their motion ultimately failed, and Chunnuis contract was renewed.Chunnui claims they reported harassment from co-workers to the districts human resources officer, but the district failed to respond and remedy the harassment.According to The Arizona Republic, Chunnui resigned from the position at Desert Harbor Elementary School at the end of the 2024-2025 school year. Chunnui did not disclose the terms of their settlement with the district, but told the outlet that a portion would go toward funding Family Prism Project, their new nonprofit focused on helping families of color and LGBTQ+ led families navigate the West Valley school system.During the public comment portion of a Peoria Unified board meeting earlier this week, Chunnui specifically thanked Rooks, now the boards president, for helping push me from quiet teacher to proud advocate.Without your public comments, Chunnui said. I may never have been radicalized into this work.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

He emphasized the importance of protecting the rights of trans youth in athletics amid mounting legal attacks.Ohios effort to enshrine the Equal Rights Amendment in the state constitution hit a major roadblock this week after lawmakers balked at proposed changes that would have strengthened its protections. GOP erases all mentions of bisexuals from Stonewall Monument webpages
Months after removing all mentions of transgender peoplefrom its website for the Stonewall National Monument, the National Park Service (NPS) hasremoved all mentions of bisexual people, too.Transgender journalist Erin Reed noted that theStonewall National Monument pageonce said, Before the 1960s, almost everything about living openly as a lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer (LGBTQ+) person was illegal. Thenewly revised version says, Before the 1960s, almost everything about living authentically as a gay or lesbian person was illegal. Related Bi culture beyond the cliches & stereotypes Cuffed jeans, tucked shirts, and not being able to sit in chairs properly these are the bi cliches. But is that what bi culture is all about? Or is there something deeper underneath the surface? On the monuments History and Culture webpage, the statement declaring that Stonewall was a milestone for LGBTQ civil rights that provided momentum for a movement now says, Stonewall was a milestone for gay and lesbian civil rights. Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Additionally, the page once said that living openly as an LGBTQ+ person was a violation of law. It now says that living openly as a member of the Stonewall comunity |sic| was a violation of law.To be clear, no one in the LGBTQ+ community has ever used the phrase the Stonewall community it is a near-meaningless phrase that obscures the historical persecution of people for their non-heterosexual sexual orientations and their non-cisgender gender identities and presentations. In response to the erasures, Reed wrote, Bisexual, transgender, and queer people were at the forefront of the Stonewall movement. Though the language was still evolving, many of the patrons defied conventional categories of gender and sexuality, refusing to be neatly classified. Erasing them from Stonewall is not only historically falseit is a deliberate act of political revisionism. The recent removal of bisexual from official Pride histories is a warning: attacks on transgender people will never stop with us, Reed added. They are part of a broader effort to narrow the scope of who is allowed to belong, to be seen, and even to be remembered. In mid-February, the NPS removed all mentions of transgender people from its website for the Stonewall National Monument in order to comply with the presidents executive orders prohibiting any federal recognition of trans people in any aspect of civic life.Numerous federal webpages began removing all mentions of trans people and gender identity after a January 29 directive from the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) telling federal agencies to end federal funding of gender ideology in programming, policies, and outward-facing media. The directive reflects Republicans larger crusade against all diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts by government bodies and private businesses. This is just cruel and petty, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D)wrote in an X postafter the NPS removed all mentions of trans people from the monuments webpage. Transgender people play a critical role in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights and New York will never allow their contributions to be erased, she added. The Stonewall Inn and its non-profit, the Stonewall Inn Gives Back Initiative, said in a statement, This blatant act of erasure not only distorts the truth of our history, but it also dishonors the immense contributions of transgender individuals especially transgender women of color who were at the forefront of the Stonewall Riots and the broader fight for LGBTQ+ rights.Former President Barack Obama designated the site as a national monument in 2016, the first such site dedicated to LGBTQ+ rights. In response to the erasure, thousands of LGBTQ+ New Yorkers have protested at the monument. The NPS also told photographer, advocate, and installation creator Steven Love Mendez that the monument will not display trans or Progress Pride flags this year, despite doing so in past years.Nevertheless, many New Yorkers and tourists have visited the monument and set up unauthorizedPride flagsin protest, including smaller trans flags planted in the soil.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Is JoJo Siwa pregnant? Here's how she addressed the rumors
JoJo Siwa has been in the headlines for a few weeks after an explosive end to her last relationship with Kath Ebbs and the unfolding of her current relationship with Chris Hughes on Celebrity Big Brother UK. The 22-year-old reality star and singer is making headlines once again after rumors began to swirl that she may be pregnant. She doesn't seem to be tamping the flames of the fire, but rather adding gasoline.Siwa released her cover of "Bette Davis Eyes," originally sung by Kim Carnes, on Friday and is promoting the song on social media. The song is a 180-degree turn aesthetically from the look and sound of her 2024 song, "Karma." On Thursday, she uploaded a "Two Truths and a Lie" video (featuring a snippet of her new song) with a caption that reads, "Couple of things that need to be addressed, so might as well do it with 2 truths and a lie." @itsjojosiwa Couple of things that need to be addressed, so might as well do it with 2 truths and a lie which is the lie? In the video, her three options are: "I've never smoked a cigarette; I'm pregnant; and this song comes out on Spotify on Friday." The video ends before she reveals which one is the lie. Some fans thought the pregnancy rumors were just a joke, but Siwa's mom left a comment on her video saying, "Grandma Jess reporting for duty," and fans are taking this as confirmation that she may be pregnant.Siwa fell for Hughes while competing with him on Celebrity Big Brother UK. The singer quickly formed a close bond with Hughes after he defended her against a homophobic interaction with another contestant. Once the show was done airing, Siwa and Hughes announced their relationship, and Siwa publicly stated in an interview with The Daily Mail that she no longer identifies as a lesbian, but rather queer.

Bobby Berk's next gig after 'Queer Eye'? A new show with John Cena
Bobby Berk has been exploring new creative endeavors since his sudden and shocking departure from Netflix's Queer Eye reboot. "I'm excited to help passionate people sift through their cherished items and give them reimagined spaces that will best honor what they hold dear."Cena added, "The idea for Junk or Jackpot? was born out of a conversation I had with friends. "Cramped rooms stuffed with rare puppets; and collections of dolls and miniature sets so numerous, they leave no room for life-size furniture."In the new series, Berk will navigate the dynamics of dealing with people who really don't want to re-organize and/or give away items they've kept for a long time. As seen throughout eight seasons of Queer Eye, Berk will surely work hard and provide emotional support for the collectors featured on the show."I'm coming to HGTV!! Junk or Jackpot?, a new series executive produced by John Cena (yes, that John Cena)," Berk wrote in An Instagram post. Angela Paxton ends marriage to Texas AG Ken Paxton, citing God and recent discoveries
The political marriage that has helped define Texass far-right legal crusades is unraveling in public view. Republican State Sen. Angela Paxton announced Thursday she has filed for divorce from her husband, Attorney General Ken Paxton, citing biblical grounds and recent discoveries.Today, after 38 years of marriage, I filed for divorce on biblical grounds, Angela Paxton, a Republican from McKinney, posted Thursday afternoon on X. I believe marriage is a sacred covenant and I have earnestly pursued reconciliation. But in light of recent discoveries, I do not believe that it honors God or is loving to myself, my children, or Ken to remain in the marriage. I move forward with complete confidence that God is always working everything together for the good of those who love Him and who are called according to His purpose.Related: Anti-LGBTQ+ Texas AG Ken Paxton announces U.S. Senate bidThe couples shared political brand, anchored in evangelical conservatism and opposition to LGBTQ+ rights, has for years been central to their identities and to Texas Republican politics. (@) Ken Paxton, who has made his political name attacking LGBTQ+ rights and pushing conservative Christian legal causes, blamed the pressures of countless political attacks and public scrutiny for the split, according to the Texas Tribune. Both Paxtons have publicly opposed marriage equality and broader protections for LGBTQ+ Texans, the Texas Tribune reports. In the aftermath of the U.S. Supreme Courts 2015 Obergefell v. Hodges decision, Ken Paxton advised Texas county clerks they could refuse marriage licenses to same-sex couples on religious grounds, a position that drew immediate legal and political backlash, according to the Texas Tribune.Related: Texas AG Ken Paxton won't leave trans people alone, again requests data from out of stateAngela Paxton has expressed similar views throughout her political career, describing marriage as a sacred union between one man and one woman, and resisting efforts to pass nondiscrimination protections for LGBTQ+ people. During her 2018 Senate campaign against Mark Phariss, a gay Democrat who had sued Texas for the right to marry his husband, Angela Paxton reportedly told a Republican group that sinners shouldnt be sent to the Senate, a remark Phariss said underscored how intertwined the Paxtons religious views have been with policies that directly harm LGBTQ+ Texans, the Texas Tribune reported.Angela Paxton has also stood by her husband through years of scandal. Ken Paxton was impeached in 2023 by the Texas House on allegations of corruption and an extramarital affair with a former Senate aide. Although the Republican-controlled Senate acquitted him, testimony indicated the affair began in 2018, briefly ended when Angela Paxton discovered it in 2019, then resumed in 2020, the Tribune reports. Angela Paxton attended her husbands Senate trial but was barred from voting on his fate, according to the Texas Tribune. Now, their split threatens to upend Ken Paxtons bid for the U.S. Senate, where hes challenging Republican Sen. John Cornyn, and could complicate his pursuit of an endorsement from President Donald Trump.

Health experts warn Trumps new policies for HHS teen pregnancy program could reverse decades of progress
Ahead of the 4th of July weekend, the Trump administration issued a sweeping rewrite of a successful program aimed at reducing teen pregnancy rates. The changes have ignited fierce concern among public health experts, sexual health educators, and LGBTQ+ advocates who warn it could undo decades of progress, erase essential health information, stifle research, and leave vulnerable youth at risk.On July 1, the Department of Health and Human Services issued new guidance for the $100 million Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program. The policy to stop the radical indoctrination of children and ensure parental oversight explicitly bars federal funds from supporting materials deemed to promote radical ideology, including references to gender identity and LGBTQ+ themes. It also prohibits instruction on non-penetrative sexual activities like masturbation and discussions of sexual pleasure, practices many experts say are crucial tools for reducing unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections.Related: Project 2025 vowed to roll back LGBTQ+ rights. Here's everything Trump has done so farThe department said the policy safeguards the rights of parents to protect their children from content that undermines their religious beliefs and declared that program materials are expected to reflect a binary understanding of sex and not gender identity, and may not promote anti-American ideologies such as diversity, equity and inclusion measures which the Trump administration calls discriminatory. In an announcement of the policy change on July 2, Acting Assistant Secretary for Health Dorothy Fink said that prioritizing parental involvement in the education of children on sensitive topics promotes a healthy environment for children to engage with the administrations medically accurate and age-appropriate materials.HHS is committed to ensuring a flourishing and healthy American youth, including through reducing teen pregnancy, Fink said.A deepening ideological shiftThe new policy instructs grantees to align their programs with multiple Trump executive orders, including Executive Order 14190, Ending Radical Indoctrination in K-12 Schooling, and Executive Order 14187, Protecting Children From Chemical and Surgical Mutilation. The guidance insists that federal funding cannot support teaching minors about ideological content, and singles out discussions about gender identity as radical.Related: Teaching Kids About LGBTQ People Is Not Sex Education, It's EqualityThe official policy document states that TPP-funded programs cannot be funded if they include materials or activities that are inconsistent with, or beyond the scope of, the statutory requirements for TPP programs. Specifically prohibited is content encouraging, normalizing, or promoting sexual activity for minors, including anal and oral sex, or masturbation, as well as the eroticization of birth control methods, creating more pleasurable sexual experiences, or foreplay techniques.Dr. Cynthia Graham, senior scientist at The Kinsey Institute at Indiana University, says such prohibitions are flatly at odds with best practices in public health. Currently, the evidence we have is that covering these things in a comprehensive way is effective and lowers the likelihood of teen pregnancy, Graham told our sister brand, The Advocate. Including things like pleasure in programs enhances interventions. We know that as well.Rolling back decades of progressPublic health leaders warn that the new policy echoes the abstinence-only education models of the past, which were widely discredited for failing to reduce teen pregnancy rates.Dr. Rachel Levine, former Assistant Secretary for Health and the first out transgender official confirmed by the U.S. Senate, emphasized how such programs have historically driven progress in lowering teen pregnancies. Levine said, One of the victories of public health in the last 40 years has been the consistent decline in the adolescent pregnancy rate. That is because of programs like Title X and TPP, and dedicated work to prevent unintended pregnancies in general and to prevent pregnancies in adolescence.Related: This New Bill Hopes to Require LGBTQ+ Inclusive Sex Ed NationwideTitle X, established in 1970, is the federal program dedicated to providing confidential family planning and reproductive health services, particularly for low-income and uninsured individuals, including contraception, preventive care, and sexual health education.Levine, who spent decades working in adolescent medicine, noted that her career began in a Title X clinic during her fellowship in the late 1980s. She later launched and directed a Title X program at Penn State Hershey Childrens Hospital. The evidence base is more than strong and robust about how comprehensive education in schools and programs like Title X and availability of family planning clinics and confidential family planning reduce adolescent pregnancy, the trained pediatrician told The Advocate in an interview.Reflecting on her time overseeing the Office of Population Affairs at HHS, Levine expressed deep concern about reversing those gains. As these programs are changed by the Trump administration, we have great worry for those changes to turn around, she said. We were concerned that that was going to happen in the first Trump administration. We turned it back around during the Biden administration, and now Im sure well see some challenges both to TPP as well as Title X.Recent government reports indicate that the U.S. teen birth rate decreased to 13.1 births per 1,000 teens aged 15 to 19 in 2023, representing a 4 percent drop from 2022 and a 79 percent decline since its peak in 1991, according to the March National Vital Statistics Report. Nevertheless, even as fewer high school students are having sex, dropping from 47 percent in 2013 to 32 percent in 2023, condom use has also fallen, from 59 percent to 52 percent, data from the CDCs Youth Risk Behavior Survey Data Summary & Trends Report 20132023 show.Former Deputy Assistant Secretary for Population Affairs during the Biden-Harris administration and one of HHSs out LGBTQ+ appointees, Lynn Rosenthal, told The Advocate that the policy shift undermines more than a decades worth of work developing effective interventions for teen pregnancy prevention. When you restrict what can and cant be said, what communities can and cant address, it undermines this really important comprehensive work thats been underway.Adrian Shanker, an LGBTQ+ health advocate who worked at HHS in the last administration, added, Before the Teen Pregnancy Prevention program, the George W. Bush administration threw enormous sums of money at abstinence-only education models, all of which failed to reduce teen pregnancy rates in our country. Tinkering with an evidence-based program to meet political goals will not reduce our teen pregnancy rates. It could have the opposite effect.Graham, who has worked on sexual health programs in the U.S. and the U.K., noted that discussions of sexual pleasure, non-penetrative sex, and contraception techniques, including demonstrations like the classic condom-on-a-banana, are not about encouraging sexual activity but equipping young people with practical skills.Theres no evidence that teaching about things like sexual role play, masturbation, or techniques to make sex more pleasurable leads to riskier sexual behavior, she said. The evidence shows the opposite.Rosenthal echoed that view from her own experience as a health educator. People need practical information. Its not about eroticizing contraception. Its providing information for people who are sexually active about how they can avoid risky sexual behavior, she said.Science under siegeResearchers say the new HHS policy is not occurring in a vacuum but is part of a broader political effort to restrict research and public discourse on sexuality, gender identity, and LGBTQ+ health. In March, Graham and dozens of other leading editors and scientists signed a forceful editorial in The Journal of Sex Research, warning that U.S. government directives to remove terms like gender, transgender, LGBT, and nonbinary from research publications represent clear examples of censorship of science and thus a political attempt to obstruct the discovery of knowledge.Related: Biden administration creates $700k grant to create inclusive sex ed for trans male teensResearch into sexuality and gender is vital for identifying social, cultural, and medical needs of populations, and addressing inequalities, the statement read. Removing certain terms from academic papers and limiting research into specific topics represents an attempt to ignore or erase these populations, and it may have disastrous consequences for health and wellbeing. The editorial cautioned that such censorship could undermine key public health goals, including efforts to fight HIV, and harm minoritized communities already facing significant health disparities.Rosenthal called the administrations actions very damaging. She warned that anti-DEI and anti-trans efforts undermine the core principles of public health, which is you look at each population and each community and have the community define for themselves what their risk factors are, what interventions would be effective.Graham, too, highlighted the broader public health consequences. Its going to reduce the likelihood that studies on things like improving condom use through pleasure-based interventions are going to be funded, she said. Its going to reduce information given to youth about sexuality broadly, even more than it already is.The cost of shameAt the heart of the administrations new policy, experts warn, is shame, and the consequences can be devastating. When you tell youth that you cant talk about certain things with them, then it makes them feel like they are bad or wrong, Rosenthal said. Information is not what creates problems. Shame is what creates problems.Shanker added, Sexual health is an LGBTQ issue, period. For LGBTQI+ adolescents who are often in the process of fully discovering who they are, they deserve the same sexual health information as all other people their age. Yet under the new policy, even medically accurate discussions about LGBTQ+ topics could be forbidden if viewed as contradicting the administrations interpretation of biological reality.Related: Queer Sex-Ed Gets a Needed Makeover in A Sexplanation DocRosenthal cautioned that withholding information drives young people toward less reliable sources. What young people want is to talk about decision-making and relationships. They want to know how to take care of themselves, she said. We can trust young people with information. But only if we treat them with respect. The Advocate contacted HHS for comment but did not receive a response.A future in limboThe new guidance stipulates that grantees must resubmit all previously approved educational materials by October 1 to remain eligible for funding. Rosenthal predicted a rocky road. Some providers will choose not to receive these funds under these conditions, she said. Other providers will look and see if they can still do their important work in the community. Thats a situation that each organization has to decide for itself.Graham worries that the United States, already among the countries with the most restrictive sex education policies, is poised to slip even further behind. Its only going to increase that isolation and lack of information and the likelihood, if you dont have information, of engaging in risky sex, she said. - YouTube youtu.be Graham to resources like the institutes free Crash Course sex education series narrated by sexologist Shan Boodram, which covers topics including gender and sexual orientation. She said these kinds of accurate, accessible materials are vital in a climate where young people risk being left without reliable information. For Rosenthal, the bottom line is simple. Anything that promotes shame, anything that says you cant talk about certain things because theyre bad topicsthats egregious.

This gay grandpa was fined $16k for protesting trans youth suicides, and he would 'do it again'
It was in the late 1970s when a teenage James Lantz lost a close friend to suicide something he believes to this day happened "because he was gay and was not accepted."The filmmaker describes his upbringing in a small Virginia town as conservative and Christian, recalling the kind of place where "nobody was out." Now 64, Lantz feels as if he's been transported back to his youth as he grapples with the losses of five transgender and nonbinary young people, all of whom died by suicide in the same Pennsylvania county within 18 months. It was their stories that would reignite Lantz's life mission, and ultimately land him in jail with a fine of over $16,000. "Having grown up a closeted gay teen in Virginia ... I knew how that felt," Lantz tells The Advocate. "I know that I got extremely depressed sometimes. I know that I have been suicidal at times. I know what these kids are experiencing. All they need is just a little bit of support. They need an adult in their life, or just an adult anywhere, to listen and say I see you, I support you, and you are loved."Related: Pennsylvania fines gay grandpa with stage 4 cancer $16k for protesting trans youth suicideLantz pleaded guilty on Tuesday to criminal mischief and misdemeanor vandalism as a result of his demonstration in April of last year, during which he interrupted a Senate session by yelling at state Sen. Ryan Aument. The Republican had sponsored several anti-LGBTQ+ bills, including the state's "Don't Say Gay" law, a trans sports ban, and a ban on LGBTQ+ books that he referred to as "pornographic."Around 39 percent of LGBTQ+ young people seriously considered attempting suicide in the past year, according to a 2024 national survey from The Trevor Project, including 46 percent of trans and nonbinary youth. Those who reported living in accepting communities attempted suicide at less than half the rate of those who reported living in unaccepting communities. Despite this, the Trump Administration recently ended the 988 suicide hotline's specialized services for LGBTQ+ youth.Upon hearing about the five deaths, which took place in Aument's Lancaster County between 2022 and 2024, Lantz said that he requested to meet with the senator on over six occasions, but that he never received a response. Neither did the family of one of the trans youth, who are Aument's neighbors. Lantz says that he was "so incensed" by Aument's "ghosting" that he wanted to take action, but he realized "the only way that I can be heard here was to go down and try to confront him directly." So, he looked up when the state Senate would be in session, and formulated a plan.On April 29, 2024, Lantz made it through security with a small hand sanitizer bottle he had filled with superglue. Officers found flyers he intended to distribute in one of his pockets and confiscated them, but missed the others he was keeping in a different pocket. He says his plan wasn't intended to cause damage, but rather to protect himself."I'm a grandfather with stage 4 cancer," Lantz says. "If a policeman not even just tackles me, but shoves me down onto the ground, I'm going to break a lot of bones, because the cancer is gravitated to my bones. The reason I carried the glue was I thought that there would be less of a chance for them tackling me. I'm not going anywhere if my hand is glued to the railing."Once he was on the fourth-floor visitors gallery, Lantz "put a whole bunch of super glue on my hand and plopped it on the railing and waited about 30 to 60 seconds for it to take." He saw Aument on the Senate floor below, and "belted out what I had to say to him" as he scattered his flyers.Lantz commanded the floor, speaking about the five youth who died by suicide for several minutes, issuing three demands for Aument: to reach out to the parents and express condolences, to reconsider the legislation that he introduces, and to resign. Aument resigned in December to become State Director for U.S. Senator Dave McCormick without commenting on the trans youth. He was replaced in a special election by Democrat James Andrew Malone, despite the district leaning Republican."I think I scared the shit out of Senator Aument," he says. "He whipped around and cringed as though the voice of God was yelling at him."Aument scurried under the balcony to avoid looking at Lantz, Lantz says, and law enforcement quickly acted to remove him, both of which Lantz expected. What he says surprised him was the support he received from those around him, even the people tasked with ending his demonstration. The filmmaker recalls the officers who removed him being "pretty chill," and the nurse who worked to unstick his hand whispering to him, "Those poor kids."Even when he arrived at the police station, Lantz says the processing officer who greeted him told him, "Sir, I really respect you for what you did. We should be asking our politicians to be answerable to their actions more often."Lantz spent 12 hours in a jail cell, and was charged with two felony counts of institutional vandalism and criminal mischief, as well as a misdemeanor offense for obstructing an official proceeding. The felony vandalism charge was lowered to a misdemeanor as part of his eventual plea deal. Lantz has been fined $16,575 for the damages the official invoice obtained by Penn Live shows $11,250 for carpet replacement, $3,775 to remove the glue, and $1,550 to repair the wood trim. Alisa Davidson, a prosecutor with the Dauphin County District Attorneys Office, told the outlet that the fines are high because the damaged objects are historic.Lantz isn't quite sure where the carpet damage charges come from, calling it an "insane amount of money." He now must set up a payment plan with the state, which is pushing for him to pay back the fines within just a year. "I've been a filmmaker for all my professional life and an adjunct college professor for some of that. I don't have that money at all," he says."What this proves is the sad fact that while Pennsylvania did not ignore the glue that I accidentally spilled on the chair, they did ignore the suicides of five trans and nonbinary youth," Lantz continues. "Which logically would say that in the state of Pennsylvania, a chair is worth more than a trans youth."Lantz, known online as "Angry Gay Grandpa," has not yet launched a public fundraiser to cover the cost of the damages, but has been raising money through GoFundMe since February for a commercial seeking to uplift LGBTQ+ youth. Not Losing You is a public service announcement that aims to bridge the gap between queer children and their conservative or Christian families who may not understand them."I want to be in the living room and some of these rural community homes where there is a, a gay or trans youth," Lantz explains. "I want [their parents] to realize 'I don't have to say that I'm gonna vote for a Democrat and I don't have to say that I understand what you're going through. But I can say no matter what, I don't want to lose you.'"In what he calls the "final chapter" of his life, Lantz is "absolutely dedicated to getting out as much media as I can to support trans and LGBTQ youth, because I don't want any more kids dying by suicide." The deaths in Lancaster County are especially tragic, the filmmaker says, as he deeply believes "these could have been preventable.""These five trans and nonbinary youth suicides, my cancer, and my absolute dedication to not having kids die by suicide was a combination that made me do things I would never have done in a previous life, or before the last five years with my cancer," Lantz says. "But this just pushed me over the edge, and I was proud to do it. And I'll be damned if I wouldn't do it again."If you or someone you know needs mental health resources and support, please call, text, or chat with the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline or visit 988lifeline.org for 24/7 access to free and confidential services. Milwaukee RemovesFonzieStatue Amid Reckoning With Greaser Past
MILWAUKEECalling the effort a long overdue attempt to address the citys checkered history, Milwaukee officials announced Friday that they had removed the iconic riverfrontFonziestatue amid an ongoing reckoning with the towns greaser past. In the year 2025, no one should be celebrating the dark era in this city when motorcycles, leather jackets, and necking dominated our streets, said Mayor Cavalier Johnson, who held a press conference at the former site of the controversial statue known as the Bronze Fonz, telling Milwaukeeans it was also time to consider renaming Pinky Tuscadero Park. Its hard to imagine being a young buttoned-up square or egghead walking past this monument, knowing full well that it commemorated a man who might have revved his engine at you at any moment. Of course, theres a sanitized narrative that being a greaser was all thumbs-up and fixing jukeboxes. But we know better than that. We should be condemning ArthurFonzarelli for repeatedly urging Ralph Malph and Potsie to sit on itnot preserving him in bronze. Johnson added that the city planned to melt down the statue to make a soda fountain where bobby-soxers could congregate without fear of being creamed. The post Milwaukee RemovesFonzieStatue Amid Reckoning With Greaser Past appeared first on The Onion.

Payment Processors Are Pushing AI Porn Off Its Biggest Platforms
Tensor.Art, an AI image creating and model sharing site announced on Friday that it is temporarily restricting AI models, tools, and posts related to pornographic content or the depiction of real-world celebrities due to pressure from payment processors. The announcement is yet another example of payment processors acting as the ultimate arbiter of what kind of content can be easily made available online and those companies seemingly increased focus on AI-generated adult or nonconsensual content. The news is especially significant following a similar change in policy from Civitai, an AI model sharing platform 404 Media reporting has shown was used for creating nonconsensual pornography. After Civitai banned AI models designed to generate the likeness of real people and certain types of adult content in May, many Civitai users and model creators migrated their models to Tensor.Art. The announcement listed three items in the Scope of Impact of the decision: Banning NSFW content, banning content based on real-world celebrities, and temporarily disabling its Civitai Import feature, which allowed people to easily move their Civitai models to Tensor.Art.Do you know anything else about where else these models are hosted? I would love to hear from you. Using a non-work device, you can message me securely on Signal at @emanuel.404. Otherwise, send me an email at emanuel@404media.co.We fully understand that this is very frustrating for many creators and users , Tensor.Art said in its announcement on Discord. Due to the previous controversy over real-person content on Civitai, TA [Tensor.Art] has unfortunately been affected because of the Civitai import feature. Owing to mandatory requirements from credit card organizations and regulatory authorities, we are compelled to make this temporary decision.Tensor.Art also listed the Reasons for Adjustment as:- Review requirements for high-risk content from credit card organizations and multiple national regulatory bodies- Compliance measures necessary to maintain platform openness and creators ability to monetizeTensor.Art said that these changes will take place within the next 72 hours, and asked model creators to clarify if their models are safe for work in order to prevent unintended impact. Its not clear what Tensor.Art will look like or what its policies will be at the end of this temporary period. Civitai made similar changes permanently and still hasnt been able to renew service from its payment processing providers or find new ones. Tensor.Art, however, is suggesting its not ready to give up on that type of content. This is not the end, Tensor.Art said in the announcement. We are actively seeking solutions to minimize the impact of these restrictions and exploring compliant ways to restore currently hidden content. We remain committed to our original mission.Tensor.Art did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
