LeBron James' Lawyers Send Cease-and-Desist to AI Company Making Pregnant Videos of Him
The creators of an AI tool and Discord community that allowed people to create AI videos of NBA stars says that it got a cease-and-desist letter from lawyers representing LeBron James. This marks one of the first known times that a high-profile celebrity has threatened legal action against an AI company for enabling the creation of nonconsensual AI imagery of their likeness. It is also one of the first times weve seen a celebrity take legal action against a type of nonconsensual but not strictly sexual type of AI-generated content, which is rampant on Instagram and other social media. In March, I wrote about Brainrot AI that was regularly going viral on Instagram. A lot of the most popular brainrot AI videos featured LeBron James and were created using a tool called Interlink AI, which runs on a larger AI generation platform called FlickUp. On the Interlink AI Discord channel, people were learning how to make the videos with detailed guides that in some cases explained exactly how to make videos of James. High profile creators there were racking up millions of views on Instagram making AI generated videos of James and Steph Curry. These included videos where an AI-generated James stood by as an AI-generated Diddy sexually assaulted Steph Curry in prison, videos of James imagined as a homeless person, videos of James on his knees with his tongue out, and videos of James pregnant. In late June, the mods of the Interlink AI Discord community told members that they decided to remove all realistic people models from the Interlink AI platform. This change comes after we ran into legal issues involving a highly valued basketball player, and to avoid any further complications, weve chosen to take a proactive approach and fully remove all realistic likenesses from the site, the mods wrote on Discord. We know this may be disappointing for some of you who were enjoying the realism in your content, but this move protects the future of the platform and allows us to focus on building something even bigger.404 Media confirmed with Jason Stacks, the founder of FlickUp, that this player was LeBron James: A couple weeks ago, we received a cease and desist letter from LeBron James' attorney about one of our creators, Interlink AI. In collaboration with Interlink, we had been promoting an AI model trained on LeBron James and a few other iconic basketball players. Within 30 minutes of receiving the cease and desist, we made the decision to remove all realistic people from Interlink AI's software. Generative AI is the "wild west" when it comes to copyright & IP, but we're committed to being on the right side of that change.Stacks would not share the cease-and-desist letter with 404 Media, but said that it came from the law firm Grubman Shire Meiselas & Sacks, P.C. Grubman Shire did not respond to numerous phone calls seeking more information, and a receptionist that we reached said that they could not connect us with the lawyers there. 404 Media left a message with the receptionist asking for comment but did not hear back. The letter came from Grubman Shire Meiselas & Sacks on behalf of LeBron James, and we took it seriously, Stacks said. We removed the models immediately and have since updated our approach to likeness and public figure policies. Thats really the full story on our end.Stacks also posted an Instagram Reel about the cease-and-desist letter, in which he briefly flashes different printed out portions of it. In one frame of the video, Grubman Shire Meiselas & Sacks is visible in the top left corner of one of the pages of the cease-and-desist.Im so fucked. This is a letter from one of the biggest NBA players of all time, Stacks says in the video. Two months ago, I launched the YouTube of AI video. It was a fun idea to help creators make some more money. But then people started noticing. Like, really noticing. Like this guy, yeah, the LeBron James. And he wasnt happy, because I got this cease-and-desist from his team. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Jason Stacks (@iamjasonstacks)Before receiving the cease-and-desist, in a basketball channel on the Interlink Discord, Stacks shared an AI-generated image of James in a pool float: LeBron looks so chill, he wrote. At least three Instagram accounts that had garnered millions of views on nonconsensual AI videos of James have been deleted by Instagram. When asked by 404 Media whether it had received a cease-and-desist letter from James, Meta refused to comment. The Interlink Discord contained step-by-step instructions for how to make videos of James, and also has a wins channel, where users bragged about getting 50 Cent to like the James/Curry/Diddy prison sexual assault video. That specific video racked up at least 6.2 million views on Instagram. Because of the popularity of AI-generated content featuring NBA players, Interlink launched series of models based directly on basketball players, including James, Curry, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and Nikola Joki, as well as models for other celebrities like Elon Musk, Mr. Beast, Drake, and Kanye West: These additions give you even more flexibility and creativity when building out your content, especially if you're creating NBA-style scenes or viral storytelling concepts, the mods said. Lets keep creating!Mods for the Discord even demonstrated some of their creationsan April announcement from the mods includes an AI video of a pregnant James saying Curry come quick, my baby is being born.It is notable that Jamess attorneys took note of Interlink and FlickUp. As we have reported for years, celebrities are some of the largest targets of nonconsensual AI-generated imagery. People who make AI content often try to get AI generators to create celebrity content even when there are guardrails, and there are currently not very many public examples of celebrities and their lawyers pushing back against the practice. A series of websites that became notorious for generating real people have recently stopped the practice after getting cut off by their payment providers.

Humans Have Shifted Earth's Rotation, Scientists Discover. Here's How.
Subscribe to 404 Media to get The Abstract, our newsletter about the most exciting and mind-boggling science news and studies of the week. Humans may be tiny compared to the immensity of Earth, but our activity can alter its dynamics on a planetary scalefor good and ill. Scientists have even discovered that Earths rotation has shifted due to our influence.According to a recent study published in Geophysical Research Letters, humans have pulled Earths poles slightly off-kilter by building huge dams. The results shed light on how future forces like ice melt, sea level rise, and continued dam construction might shape our planets rotation. In an ideal model, Earths geographic poles in the Arctic and Antarctic align exactly with its axis of rotation. In reality, the poles drift from the axis because they are sensitive to the constant redistribution of mass on the planets surface and in its interior. This drift, called true polar wander, is critical to our daily lives, as it influences navigation and timekeeping technologies like GPS, as well as astronomical observations.Imagine a spinning balloon and, let's say, a fly lands on it, said Natasha Valencic, a graduate student in the department of Earth and planetary sciences at Harvard University who led the study. Basically, the pole will move away from the extra mass. Thats what we see with the Earth.Scientists have known for years that the vast amount of water locked up in dams around the world exerts influence on sea levels and other large-scale phenomena. But Valencic and her colleagues are the first to calculate how dams impact true polar wander. The team analyzed a comprehensive sample of nearly 7,000 dams built globally from 1835 to 2011, which collectively contain enough water to fill the Grand Canyon twice. We really focus on the big ones, Valencic said, adding that the dams in the study all contain at least one cubic kilometer of volume. About a quarter of catalogued dams are below that cutoff, but excluding them likely had a negligible impact on results, according to the new study. The team estimated that these colossal water impoundments have caused Earths poles to wander a total of about 3.7 feet over the past two centuriesa small amount, but still incredible to think aboutand that motion hasnt all been in the same direction, shifting based on where dams were being built. From 1835 to 1954, most dam production occurred in North America, which propelled the North Pole in the other direction by about eight inches toward the 103rd meridian east, which runs through Eurasia. From the 1950s to 2011, the dam boom moved to East Africa and Asia, causing the pole to wander 22 inches to the 117th meridian west, which passes through North America. In total, the dam-related drift is small relative to other forces in the so-called budget of polar wander, such as ice melt, sea level rise, or the roiling convections in Earths mantle. But its important to tease out the contributions of each factor to make projections about where, and how far, the poles might wander in the future. It is actually a pretty big debatehow important convection is, as opposed to ice melting and other phenomena, like dams, Valencic said. Dams are a smaller contribution to polar wander; maybe an order of magnitude smaller than ice melt. But still, it's important to close the budget. In addition to isolating each input on polar wander, researchers want to understand the head-spinning ways in which they all interact. Human-driven climate change is fueling the rapid loss of glaciers and ice sheets around the world and subsequent sea level rise. Those trends affect polar wander by shifting mass around Earths surface. Polar wander is, in turn, linked with regional differences in sea levels. When the axis moves in one direction, the hemisphere toward which it's moving sees a sea level fall and the same thing happens in the opposite hemisphere, Valencic said (this effect is illustrated in figure 1 of this study). So if it's moving toward the northeastern hemisphere, the southwestern one will also see a fall, and the other two will see a rise.Unraveling this whole tapestry of natural and anthropogenic inputs is no easy task, but its possible to tug on a few fascinating threads. For instance, scientists reported in 2024 that recent human-linked shifts in ice and groundwater are slowing Earths rotation at a rate of 1.33 milliseconds per century. This factor may eventually become a more forceful brake on Earths rotation than the Moons tidal influence.Meanwhile, the largest dam on Earth, Chinas Three Gorges, is estimated to single-handedly account for a rotational slowdown of 0.06 microseconds and a 0.8-inch polar shift, if its reservoir is filled to capacity, according to a 2005 study. So while the overall effect of dams on polar wander is relatively small, it's still a factor that we have to think about, Valencic concluded. If we want to fully understand polar wander, and what's going on with the axis, we need to pin everything down.Subscribe to 404 Media to get The Abstract, our newsletter about the most exciting and mind-boggling science news and studies of the week.

Candace Owens doubles down after shes sued for claiming French first lady is trans: Youre sick
MAGA commentator Candace Owens has responded to French First Lady Brigitte Macrons defamation suit over the conspiracy theorists year-long crusade to prove Macron is a transgender woman. Owens devoted thirty minutes of her most recent podcast episode to defending her actions. Speaking directly to Macron, she claimed, The whole world believes youre a man and If what I was saying was ridiculous this wouldnt have gone viral. Related Bob the Drag Queen slams Gavin Newsom for selling out trans folks: Transgender is not a dirty word Speaking to Charlie Kirk is never a good idea, Bob said of Newsoms decision to host the anti-LGBTQ+ MAGA influencer on his podcast. Owens claimed Macron is actually trying to defame her with a lawsuit that is littered with lies. She decried Macrons allegation that she pushed the antisemitic blood libel myth that Jewish people drink the blood of Christian children, calling it the most absurd lie that you could possibly put in a lawsuit.I said that Jews are going around drinking the blood of Christian children? Are you out of your mind? she said. And yet, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) has confirmed Owens promoted this myth. The groups page on Owens says she made the claim while discussing a Jewish man named Leo Frank, who was lynched in 1913 after he was falsely accused of murder. Owens reportedly said Frank saw incest and pedophilia as the sacramental rites and they would commit these acts, things that would normally be termed blood libel were actually happening. And last year, Owens liked a post on X in which someone wrote to a Rabbi, Are you drunk on Christian blood again?Owens also brought up the fact that the lawsuit mentioned she sold t-shirts with a fake Time Magazine Man of the Year cover featuring a photo of Macron. Owens laughed and said she will be restocking the shirt and selling one thousand more. Were not gonna shut up, she declared. Youre not going to bully us. Frankly, I find this all to be irresistible and delicious. You have definitively met your match. I cannot stand corruption. She concluded her rant with a string of insults. I think youre sick, I think youre disgusting, and I am fully prepared to take on this battle on behalf of the entire world. The relentless and unjustified smear campaignto which the lawsuit refers began in June 2024, when Owens glommed onto wild speculation from two women who were initially found liable for defamation after claiming Brigitte Macron was actually her own real-life brother, Jean-Michel Trogneux, transitioned into a woman. (Trogneux was present at the defamation trial.) The decision was overturned on appeal this month, though Macron reportedly plans to take the case to a higher court. Owen went on to create an eight-part podcast series in which she investigated Brigitte Macrons gender identity. The lawsuit reportedly claims that Owenss obsession with their family has caused tremendous damage to the Macrons, causing global humiliation and turning their lives into fodder for profit-driven lies.Owens published the series and related X posts with reckless disregard for the truth, the lawsuit states. Owens was repeatedly presented with credible, verifiable evidence disproving her claims including documentation, public records, and direct outreach from the Macrons. Instead of correcting the record, she doubled down Owens, fully aware of the truth, has not only declined to retract her statements but has actively expanded on them. The GOP wants to end a life-saving HIV program & sell poor countries U.S meds instead
While Senate Republicans recently took steps to restore $400 million in proposed funding cuts to the Presidents Emergency Program for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), a global HIV prevention program estimated to have saved 26 million lives in developing countries since its 2003 launch, the Trump administrations State Department has drafted a plan to end PEPFAR.The plan would replace PEPFAR with a for-profit program to detect HIV outbreaks in low-income countries and then sell them American medicines and services, The New York Times reported. Related Now is a uniquely terrible time to cut funding for HIV New breakthrough drugs could eradicate AIDS. Why are we hobbling their distribution? Draft documents viewed by the aforementioned publication seek to end PEPFAR within two years. The plan would implement Secretary of State Marco Rubios desired 42% reduction in PEPFARs current budget of $4.7 billion, amounting to a $1.9 billion reduction. Insights for the LGBTQ+ community Subscribe to our briefing for insights into how politics impacts the LGBTQ+ community and more. Subscribe to our Newsletter today PEPFAR would be replaced with a system to rapidly detect and respond to disease outbreaks in poor countries, using bilateral relationships between the affected regions and American companies that would then sell medical products and services. We believe that the transition of PEPFAR can become the premier example of the U.S. commitment to prioritizing trade over aid, opportunity over dependency and investment over assistance, the draft document states.Though the plans details have been in development over several weeks, have received comments from senior State Department officials, and have already been shared with PEPFAR partners in other countries, a State Department spokeswoman said the documents hadnt been finalized by department leadership and dont reflect the State Departments current PEPFAR policy. Despite PEPFARs past success, the president and congressional Republicans have repeatedly targeted the program, with some social conservatives claiming that PEPFAR funds are used to promote LGBTQ+ rights. On January 20, the president issued an executive order calling for a 90-day review to reevaluate and realign all U.S. foreign aid policiesand programs. Shortly after, he ordered the shutdown of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), including its work on PEPFAR. Amidst widespread criticism, the administration offered a waiverallowing some PEPFAR programs to continue. However, those waivers havent been issued to any HIV-prevention programs that support HIV-positive men, sex workers, and LGBTQ+ people most at-risk of contracting the virus. Instead, the current administration only supports programs to counsel, treat, and provide condom and pre-exposure prophylactics (PrEP) to child-bearing women. While the White Houses original budget proposal for the coming years had sought to severely reduce all PEPFAR funding, the administration agreed to an amendment to the budget bill that would exempt the HIV/AIDS relief program.Nevertheless, the aforementioned alterations to PEPFARs provision may result in over 11 million additional HIV infections and 3 million additional AIDS-related deaths across sub-Saharan Africa by 2030, out gay Rep. Robert Garcia (D-CA) recently wrote in a letter to the U.S. Secretary of Health. Garcias letter demanded information about the administrations shameful and widespread elimination of HIV and AIDS-related research, vaccines, and life-saving programs, questioning whether their elimination was rooted in science or in misinformation and disinformation.Experts worry that HIV infection rates are rising in the African countries most affected by HIV as preventative medications run out across Africa. There may not even be a clear way to measure the damage caused by the funding cuts because those cuts have also ended data collection efforts to track the viruss local prevalence. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton Is Outsourcing More of His Offices Work to Costly Private Lawyers
by Zach Despart, The Texas Tribune This article is co-published with The Texas Tribune, a nonprofit, nonpartisan local newsroom that informs and engages with Texans. Sign up for The Brief Weekly to get up to speed on their essential coverage of Texas issues. One day in late May 2024, lawyer Zina Bash spent 6 1/2 hours working on a case against Facebook parent company Meta on behalf of the state of Texas. She reviewed draft legal filings. She participated in a court-ordered mediation session and then discussed the outcome with state Attorney General Ken Paxton. In her previous job as senior counsel on Paxtons leadership team, that labor would have cost Texas taxpayers $641.But Bash had moved to private practice. Paxton hired her firm to work on the Meta case, allowing her to bill $3,780 an hour, so that day of work will cost taxpayers $24,570.In the past five years, Paxton has grown increasingly reliant on pricey private lawyers to argue cases on behalf of the state, rather than the hundreds of attorneys who work within his office, an investigation by The Texas Tribune and ProPublica found. These are often attorneys, like Bash, with whom Paxton has personal or political ties.In addition to Bash, one such contract went to Tony Buzbee, the trial lawyer who successfully defended Paxton during his 2023 impeachment trial on corruption charges. Three other contracts went to firms whose senior attorneys have donated to Paxtons political campaigns. Despite these connections and what experts say are potential conflicts of interest, Paxton does not appear to have recused himself from the selection process. Although he is not required to by law, this raises a concern about appearing improper, experts who study attorneys general said.Paxton appears to have also outsourced cases more frequently than his predecessors, available records show. And hes inked the kind of contingent-fee contracts, in which firms receive a share of a settlement if they win, far more often than the attorneys general in other large states, including California, New York and Pennsylvania. Since 2015, the New York and California attorneys general have awarded zero contingent-fee contracts; Pennsylvanias has signed one. During that period, Paxtons office approved 13.One of those was with Bashs firm, Chicago-based Keller Postman, at the time known as Keller Lenkner, which she joined as partner in February 2021 after resigning from her job at the attorney generals office. Paxton had signed a contract with the company two months earlier to investigate Google for deceptive business practices and violations of antitrust law. A little more than a year later, Bashs firm won a state contract to work on the Meta litigation, alleging its facial recognition software violated Texans privacy. This time, Bash was the co-lead counsel.Meta, which called the lawsuit meritless, settled the case for $1.4 billion in the summer of 2024. It was a windfall for Keller Postman. The firm billed $97 million, the largest fee charged by outside counsel under Paxtons tenure. Bashs work alone accounted for $3.6 million of that total. A letter from Zina Bash to the Texas attorney generals office informs the office that the state owes her firm, Keller Postman, almost $97 million for its work on the states case against Meta. (Obtained by The Texas Tribune. Highlighted by ProPublica.) Bash, a former U.S. Supreme Court clerk, said in a statement she is honored the attorney generals office partnered with Keller Postman based on the firms first-rate attorneys and extensive experience. We have a record of taking on the most significant litigation in the country against the most powerful defendants in the world, Bash said.Keller Postman did not respond to a request for comment. There is little to stop Paxton, or any other occupant of his office, from handing these contracts out. The attorney general can award them without seeking bids from other law firms or asking anyones permission.Asked to provide competitive-bid documents for the contingent-fee contracts it has awarded, the attorney generals office said it had none because state law exempts the OAG from having to do all of the solicitation steps when hiring outside counsel.Given the high-profile nature of representing an attorney general and the potential for a big payday, many qualified firms would be eager to compete for this work, said Paul Nolette, a professor of political science at Marquette University who studies attorneys general.Id be curious to know what the justification is for this not going on the open market, Nolette said. Paxton declined interview requests for this story. He has publicly defended the practice of hiring outside law firms, arguing that his office lacks the resources in-house to take on massive corporations like tech companies and pharmaceutical manufacturers. These parties have practically unlimited resources that would swamp most legal teams and delay effective enforcement, Paxton told the Senate finance committee during a budget hearing in January.A spokesperson for Paxton said in a statement that the outside lawyers hired by the office are some of the best in the nation. With the contingent-fee settlements to date, more than $2 billion, the state could not have gotten a better return on its investment, the statement said.Chris Toth, former executive director of the National Association of Attorneys General, questioned why so much extra help is needed. Outside counsel is appropriate for small states, he said, that only have so many lawyers with so many levels of expertise. The Texas attorney generals office, one of the largest in the country, has more than 700 attorneys.Large states typically dont hire outside counsel, Toth said. They should have the people in-house that should be able to go toe-to-toe with the best attorneys that are out there.A Troubled HistoryWhen a Texas attorney general previously made a practice of giving lucrative contracts to private counsel, it didnt end well.Dan Morales was the last Democrat to hold the office. He became embroiled in scandal after he used outside firms to help secure a $17 billion settlement in Big Tobacco litigation in 1998.Republicans, including then-Gov. George W. Bush, blasted the $3.2 billion payout to the outside lawyers as exorbitant. Their attacks grew more intense when Morales sought to steer $500 million of that sum to a lawyer, a personal friend, who did very little work on the case. Morales pleaded guilty in 2003 to related federal corruption charges. He served 3 1/2 years behind bars.John Cornyn, the Republican who succeeded Morales in 1999, criticized his predecessors handling of the tobacco case during his campaign for the office. In an interview for this story, Cornyn said he never hired outside counsel as attorney general because he focused on recruiting talented in-house lawyers that he felt could handle all the offices cases.Paxton is challenging Cornyn, now a four-term U.S. senator, in next years Republican primary.Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, the Republican who led the office after Cornyn, appears to have rarely used private lawyers. The attorney generals office was able to produce records for only part of Abbotts 12-year term because state law allows the files to be deleted after so many years. The office signed nine outside counsel contracts between 2010 and 2014, all pro bono or for hourly rates rather than contingency. Abbott did not respond to an interview request.Paxton also seldom outsourced cases during his first five years in office. Through 2019, he awarded only nine outside counsel contracts, all pro bono or hourly rate. The most expensive contract capped fees at $500,000 far less than $143 million the state paid to the two firms, including Bashs, that handled the Meta case.He changed course in 2020.That summer, the attorney generals office was gearing up to file its first case against Google. It related to allegations that the company monopolized the online advertising market, raising costs for advertisers, who increased the price of their products for average consumers as a result. Paxton initially had no plans to hire outside counsel for the litigation, three former deputy attorneys general told the Tribune and ProPublica. But before the case was filed, the attorney generals office was thrown into upheaval. At the end of September, seven of Paxtons senior advisers reported him to the FBI, concerned his relationship with an Austin real estate investor had crossed the line into bribery and corruption. State House members would later impeach Paxton on counts related to the accusations; state senators eventually acquitted him. The federal criminal investigation into Paxton did not result in any criminal charges.Over fall 2020, each of the lawyers in his office who had accused Paxton of wrongdoing quit or was fired. That included Darren McCarty, the head of civil litigation who was supposed to lead the Google litigation before he reported his boss to the FBI. He resigned on Oct. 26.Less than two months later, on Dec. 16, Paxton signed contracts with The Lanier Law Firm and Keller Postman to investigate Google. They filed the lawsuit against the tech giant in federal court the same day.Paxton replaced the lawyers who complained to the authorities. The staffing of the antitrust and consumer protection divisions, which would have handled these cases, remained constant at more than 80 employees in the following years. Yet Paxton continued to outsource lawsuits against large corporations to private lawyers.Under Keller Postmans contract, the firm would be paid only if it secured a settlement or won at trial. These contingent-fee cases have the potential to be far more profitable for the outside firms than those in which they bill at a regular hourly rate. In a successful case, the contracts say that firms are paid either a percentage of a settlement or the sum of hours billed by the firm times four, whichever is less.In the Meta case, Keller Postman was entitled to 11% of the states settlement, a share that totaled $154 million. But because the firms fees and expenses totaled $97 million, it billed that sum.In multiple legislative sessions, Paxton has testified that outsourcing was the only way his office could stand toe-to-toe with corporate titans. If Paxton has a shortage of qualified in-house attorneys, Cornyn told the newsrooms, thats because of the damage the whistleblower scandal did to the reputation of the attorney generals office as a home for ambitious young lawyers.Hes a victim of his own malfeasance and mismanagement because people did not want to work for him anymore, Cornyn said. And if you run off your best lawyers because you engage in questionable ethical conduct, then youre left with very few options. But this shouldnt be a way to reward bad behavior.Former Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard said he was surprised Paxton began hiring contingent-fee outside lawyers only after the scandal, since those contracts, with their potential for high profits, are tougher to ethically defend.I would have thought it would have been the other way around that he got more careful after he got the whistle blown on him, said Goddard, a Democrat. But it looked like he got more reckless. Attorney General Ken Paxton, right, sits with lawyer Tony Buzbee on the ninth day of Paxtonss impeachment trial at the Texas Capitol in Austin on Sept. 15, 2023. (Julius Shieh/The Texas Tribune) Connections to Contract RecipientsPaxtons style of procurement also benefited Buzbee, the man who successfully defended him during his impeachment trial, which stemmed from allegations the whistleblowers raised. The attorney general chose to skip most of the proceedings, so for the 10 days of trial in the Texas Senate, his most vociferous advocate was the loquacious Buzbee. The pair sat side by side when the attorney general did attend.A little more than a year later, Paxton hired The Buzbee Law Firm to pursue an antitrust suit against the investment firms BlackRock, State Street and Vanguard that accuses the companies of manipulating the coal market in a way that allegedly increased electricity prices for Texans. The firms deny wrongdoing.Buzbee is a successful litigator and one of Houstons most famous plaintiffs attorneys. Among other victories, he won settlements for victims of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill and $73 million for Gulf of Mexico oil drillers in a 2001 antitrust case. But hes known primarily for personal injury work, not antitrust litigation. His firm, one of two hired for this latest attorney generals office contingent-fee case, could collect 10% of any judgment or settlement. The case is in its early stages, though the Trump administration in May filed a brief in the case in support of Texas.Buzbee downplayed the potential for a big payday in an email to the newsrooms and argued there is no buddy system at play, noting he believed other law firms also interviewed with Paxtons office for the job. (The attorney generals office did not confirm this.) He said his firm has to pay for significant expenses up front, without any guarantee of payment. The current arrangement may be a good deal for other lawyers, but in all candor, its not for me, Buzbee said, adding that his normal hourly rate is $2,250. Frankly, the only reason Im even doing it is that I am proud to represent the state in such a landmark case. A page from an outside counsel contract, signed by both Buzbee and Paxton, shows The Buzbee Law Firm was hired to represent the state in litigation against BlackRock Inc., State Street Corp. and The Vanguard Group Inc. (Obtained by The Texas Tribune) The connections between Paxton and the lawyers he has hired also extend to other firms. The attorney generals office hired the firm Norton Rose Fulbright, one of the largest in the country with more than 3,000 lawyers on staff, to work on separate Google cases for the state, focusing on consumer protection allegations. The attorney generals office has awarded three contracts to the firm since 2022 for cases against the tech giant. Three times during that period, Joseph Graham, the firms lead counsel on the Google litigation, contributed $5,000 to Paxtons campaign for attorney general. Twice, the donations came within 16 days of Graham signing one of the firms contracts with the attorney general. The firm and its attorneys have contributed $39,500 to Paxtons campaign since he took office. Neither Graham nor Norton Rose Fulbright responded to requests for comment.Mark Lanier, founder of The Lanier Law Firm, which the state hired to work on a separate Google case, is a large donor to Texas elected officials. He has contributed $31,000 to Paxtons campaigns since 2015. The largest contribution, for $25,000, came six months after Lanier signed his firms Google contract. The Lanier contract is slightly different from the others the attorney generals office awarded, in that the firms payment is partially based on a basic hourly rate but it could also be paid more if it wins the case, as in the contingent-fee model. Lanier noted in an emailed statement to the newsrooms that he took a reduced fee on this case and maintained that the attorney generals office needed the kind of firepower his team can bring against an opponent like Google. The Texas AG office and its lawyers are good, but specialists are needed in a war like this. And it is a war, Lanier wrote. It would be irresponsible to pursue Google on behalf of Texans without bring[ing] the fullest resources you can.A competitive, open process for awarding contracts can be a strong defense against accusations of favoritism, Goddard said.Unlike some other states, Texas does not require these contracts be put out to competitive bid.Florida, for example, has one of the most robust laws in the country for procuring outside counsel, requiring the attorney general to explain in writing why a contingent-fee contract is necessary. It also mandates most contracts be put out to competitive bid and caps contingent-fee payouts at $50 million.Texas has no such cap.It also has virtually no method for state lawmakers to truly supervise this kind of practice. State law mandates only that the attorney general notify the Legislature when his office awards a contingent-fee contract, and certify that no in-house lawyers or private attorneys at an hourly rate can handle the task. Paxton has done so in boilerplate two-page letters that all say outside attorneys are needed because of the scope and enormity of the cases. If lawmakers are concerned about these contracts, there is no mechanism for them to challenge Paxtons determination that private counsel is needed.Having lawyers bid for work would eliminate the appearance of impropriety that hangs over Paxtons hires, Goddard said.A couple look like paybacks, which is extraordinarily improper, in other words to award a contract to someone whos a major contributor or has recently left your office, he said. All of those would not be allowed in our state.Officials in other states have said they can still secure big wins for their constituents without relying on private firms.California, for example, reached a $93 million settlement with Google in 2023 over claims that the company was clandestinely tracking users locations. A year earlier, in a case with similar allegations, Oregon and Nebraska led a 40-state coalition that won a $392 million settlement against the company. Texas was not part of this suit. The latter agreement required Google to make new privacy disclosures to consumers, restricted its ability to share users location information with advertisers and required the company to prepare an annual report detailing how it was complying with the settlement terms.Doug Peterson, the Republican attorney general of Nebraska at the time, said negotiating the financial penalty Nebraskas share was $11.9 million was a secondary goal of the settlement. The most important thing were trying to do is to stop the bad behavior, Peterson said.McCarty, one of the attorney general employees who blew the whistle on Paxton, said private lawyers can be talented, but they have an incentive to fixate on the financial portion of settlements which is tied to their compensation rather than enforcement provisions that may best protect a states residents.Government enforcers, especially in the antitrust context, can focus on more effective solutions, McCarty said.Norton Rose Fulbright has yet to send its final billing records to the attorney generals office but is likely to be rewarded handsomely. The firm helped the state secure a $1.38 billion settlement with Google in May. Google spokesperson Jos Castaeda said the Texas settlement, which has not been finalized, will contain no new restrictions on the companys practices.Under the terms of its contracts, the firms fees could exceed $350 million.

Manhattan On Alert Following Sunrise Unaccompanied By Languid Clarinet Music
NEW YORKInstinctively lowering themselves into a defensive crouch while awaiting the return of the eerily absent audio cue, Manhattan residents reportedly remained on alert Thursday after a sunrise unaccompanied by languid clarinet music. Every day, as long as I can remember, I would roll out of bed to a soulful clarinet solo scoring the suns ascent over the Hudson, but today theres only silence, said longtime Hells Kitchen resident Robin Saunders, one of 1.6 million baffled Manhattanites who remained locked down at home as authorities investigated the musics mysterious absence, only briefly peering out of their apartment windows in the hope of catching a single trill or sustained seventh note to mark the return to bluesy normalcy. It didnt matter whether I was waking up from a long bender in the West Village or getting ready for my workaday job in Midtown: Hearing those reeds blow out a long, sleepy note, watching the sunlight dapple off the Flatiron, and Woolworth buildingsthats how you knew you were in New York. Now, though? Its like Im in some strange, alien world devoid of anything approaching syncopation. At press time, the city had declared a state of emergency after Brooklyn residents reported being unable to hear the sultry saxophone solo that typically soundtracks their lonely evening walks under neon signs. HHS Advises Low-Income Seniors To Wallow In Mud To Stay Cool
WASHINGTONFollowing federal cuts to utility bill assistance programs, the Department of Health and Human Services released guidance Thursday advising low-income seniors to stay cool by wallowing in the mud. With summer temperatures soaring, its more important than ever that older Americans are taking the time to lower their bodies into slop, said Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who shared an illustrated diagram demonstrating how seniors could protect themselves by wading into, rolling around in, and slathering themselves from head to toe in mud. Mud is effective, and most importantly, free. Who needs air conditioning when you can make mud right there in your own backyard? Even if youre not a senior on a fixed income, I highly encourage you to check on your elderly neighbors and make sure theyre neck-deep in sludge. At press time, Kennedy added that if seniors did succumb to the heat, the best part was they would have already fashioned themselves a makeshift grave. The post HHS Advises Low-Income Seniors To Wallow In Mud To Stay Cool appeared first on The Onion.

Grindr Wont Let Users Say 'No Zionists'
Grindr wont allow users to add no Zionists to their profiles, but allows any number of other phrases that state political, religious, and ethnic preferences, according to 404 Medias tests of the platform and user reports.Several users received an error message that says The following are not allowed: no zionist, no zionists, when they tried to add the phrases to their bios on Thursday. I tested this myself on a new Grindr account, and received the same error message. I was able to add Zionist to my profile (without no), however, and could also add any phrase I could think of: no Arabs, no Blacks, no Palestinians, no Muslims, no Christians, no Jews, no trans, no Republicans, no Democrats, and so on. No Zionist[s] was the only phrase that was blocked in my testing.Others have seen this message as early as May 2024. Its not clear when Grindr started implementing this rule; no Zionists doesnt appear anywhere in its terms of service.Screenshot from Grindr showing "the following is not allowed: no zionist, no zionists" errorIts terms of service does state, however: You will NOT post, store, send, transmit, or disseminate any information or material which a reasonable person could deem to be objectionable, defamatory, libelous, offensive, obscene, indecent, pornographic, harassing, threatening, embarrassing, distressing, vulgar, hateful, racially or ethnically or otherwise offensive to any group or individual, intentionally misleading, false, or otherwise inappropriate, regardless of whether this material or its dissemination is unlawful. In 2020, Grindr removed its ethnicity filter, writing in its announcement: We will continue to fight racism on Grindr, both through dialogue with our community and a zero-tolerance policy for racism and hate speech on our platform. As part of this commitment, and based on your feedback, we have decided to remove the ethnicity filter from our next release. But the BBC and other outlets noticed that the app didnt actually remove it for weeks and several updates after the announcement.Grindr founder Joel Simkhai is Israeli and left the company in 2018 after it was sold to a Chinese gaming company. In September 2024, The Forward reported that pro-Israel Jews complained that they felt like they faced hostility on dating apps for displaying Israeli flag emojis or identifying as Zionist. In March 2025, the Association for LGBTQ Equality in Israel, known as the Aguda, reported a significant uptick in attempted lynchings and stabbings that used the popular dating app Grindr to target LGBT people in the North, the Jerusalem Post reported, where attackers allegedly created fake Grindr profiles to lure victims to them.It seems pretty explicitly pro-colonization and protecting of the ideology that genocide and ethnic cleansing are okay for certain groups to perform as long as it upholds your own personal or capitalistic interests, Green, a Grindr user I spoke to who also saw this error message, told me. Its gross. And to put energy towards protecting a blatantly bigoted ideology and not put the same energy towards protecting minority groups is pathetic. So fuck Grindr and its inability to intersect queer oppression with the oppression of other groups.Grindr did not immediately respond to 404 Medias request for comment.

Lawsuit Alleges Roblox Hosted Digital 'Diddy Freak-Off' Themed Games
This article was produced in collaboration with Court Watch, an independent outlet that unearths overlooked court records. Subscribe to them here.A lawsuit filed in California against Roblox and Discord alleged that the former hosted Sean Diddy Combs and Jeffrey Epstein themed content children could easily access. The games had names like DIDDY SURVIVAL, diddy party, and Nice Try Diddy and often bore the musicians face. A search for the terms Diddy and Epstein in Roblox currently returns no results, suggesting the games have since been removed.According to the lawsuit, an 11 year old girl was groomed and sexually assaulted after meeting a stranger on Roblox and talking to them on Discord. The lawsuit is seeking damages related to both companys alleged negligence. The 105 page lawsuit said Roblox includes digitized Diddy parties and games where players must escape from Epsteins Island. Robloxs games trivialize and gamify serious criminal conduct, including rape, the lawsuit said. The court documents cited a 2024 report from the Hindenburg Research group that looked into valuations of the Roblox Corporation and checked allegations that the company wasnt providing a safe place for children. To test out the platform, we set up multiple accounts of various ages to see what content was accessible to children. Using an account registered as a 9-year-old, we searched for games that reference Sean Diddy Combs, Hindenburg said in its report. These Roblox games received little media attention at the time, and have been resurfaced by the lawsuit. When Hindenburg put together its report, Combs had just been arrested and charged with several felony sex crimes. A jury found him not guilty of all but two of them. But back in 2024, the allegations against Diddy were a hot topic online and researchers said they found more than 600 games referencing Combs. A screenshot of the search result included in both the lawsuit and the research showed a row of Roblox games featuring Combs. Other titles included Survive THE DIDDY in Area51, Freaky Diddy Simulator, [NEW] Midnight at Diddys Party, and Diddy Survival. The lawsuit alleged that Epstein-related games were on Roblox. This report also revealed that Roblox permitted more than 900 Roblox accounts displaying variations of convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epsteins name, such as JeffEpsteinSupporter, whose account Roblox actively permitted to be openly engaged in childrens games, Escape to Epstein Islanda title that directly references one, it said.A screenshot in both the lawsuit and the research showed a Roblox style avatar fleeing from an Epstein-faced demon amidst Hellish-flames. The game was titled Escape to Epstein Island and had zero players.Roblox has a predator problem. The game has more than 70 million daily active users, many of them children. According to media reports and this lawsuit, the company doesnt do enough to police the space where children play. According to the lawsuit, a child predator assaulted the 11-year-old Jane Doe after a long grooming process facilitated by Roblox and Discord. This predators actions were possible only because of Defendants egregiously tortious conduct, the lawsuit said.Roblox also hosts a staggering number of experiences centered on simulated sexual activity. For instance, children can play in condo gamespredatory digital environments, including houses, where users can remove their avatars virtual clothing, revealing nudity, and engage in disturbing simulated sexual activities with other Roblox users, the lawsuit said. They can also play games like Public Bathroom Simulator Vibe, which allows access to users as young as nine years old and enables users to simulate sexual activity in virtual bathrooms, as well as virtual strip clubs, where child avatars perform sexually explicit acts, like giving lap dances to patrons.Roblox did not immediately return 404 Medias request for comment.

Nancy Mace thanks Trump for fighting to release Epstein files even though hes doing exact opposite
In a post supporting the release of the Jeffrey Epstein files, viciously anti-trans Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) tried to gaslight Americans into believing Donald Trump is on the side of truth. Trump administration officials, including the president himself, have made it clear they are trying to release as little information as possible, which has led many to speculate that Trumps name appears in the case files related to the late child sex trafficker. Related Candace Owens doubles down after shes sued for claiming French first lady is trans: Youre sick The conspiracist has spent a year investigating Brigitte Macrons gender and said she finds the lawsuit irresistible and delicious. Mace, who has long positioned herself as a staunch ally for victims of sexual violence as well as a devoted Trump supporter, seems to have found herself in a tight spot as the battle for the files to be made public continues. But confusingly, she praised Trump in a social media post after the vote. When the system protects predators and punishes survivors, something is deeply broken, she said. And we will do everything in our power to fix a broken system. The Epstein files are no different. And we support President Trumps push to release the files! She wrote a similar message in a second post on the matter, saying, We stand with President Trump on full and complete transparency. And we support President Trumps push to release the files! pic.twitter.com/BNcV2heSvG Rep. Nancy Mace (@RepNancyMace) July 24, 2025Maces words are extremely misleading, considering President Trump has made it clear he has no interest in full transparency. Not only that, but the president has repeatedly maligned his supporters who have pushed him on the matter, calling them bad people, weaklings, and selfish, and saying he no longer counts them among Team MAGA. He has tried and failed repeatedly to distract his base and shut down the conversations over Epstein but for once, his supporters arent drinking the Kool-Aid.Its unclear whether Mace is trying to deceive her followers or herself with her claims, but one thing is certain: Theyre not true. She was probably referring to the presidents request that the Department of Justice release Epsteins Grand Jury testimony in an attempt to appease people. Many on social media slammed Mace for outright lying about Trumps dedication to transparency. They also blasted her for claiming to support victims while supporting Trump, who has been accused of sexual assault or other forms of sexual improprietyby at least 27 women and against whom evidence is mounting in the Epstein case. We know what its like when the system turns its back on survivors. The victims in the Epstein files deserve justice and the truth. We stand with President Trump on full and complete transparency! pic.twitter.com/e6FDXDp0to Rep. Nancy Mace (@RepNancyMace) July 24, 2025The president has found himself in hot water over his connections to Epstein and his administrations recent refusal to release the case files after long promising to share them. MAGA conspiracy theorists have been chomping at the bit for the files, and many are turning on Trump as he doubles down on his administrations decision.Epstein died in prison in 2019 while awaiting trial on charges of sex trafficking minors. While the medical examiner determined that his death was a suicide, many people, especially on the right, do not believe that it was, instead asserting that he was killed to keep him silent about his alleged list of powerful, high-profile clients for whom he found children to sexually abuse. Many officials associated with Trump had spent years repeating the same rumors, andTrump himself said repeatedly in 2024 that the Epstein list needed to be released. In February, Attorney General Bondi said that she was reviewing a lot of names related to the Epstein investigation and said that the Epstein list is sitting on my desk right now to review. But earlier this month, the Department of Justice released a memo that said there was no secret client list and reaffirmed the 2019 finding that Epstein died by suicide. Many Trump supporters were outraged that the rumored client list wouldnt be released, while many on the left speculated that the reason Bondi wasnt releasing it is because Trump himself or at least high-ranking members of his administration is on it.Trump had a decades-long friendship with Epsteinand joked about how his friend was fun and terrific andliked women on the younger side. Trump has also beenfound liable for sexual abuse by a jury, hasadmitted to sexually assaulting womenin the past, and hasadmitted to walking in on underage girlsas they changed clothes. A bombshell report by the Wall Street Journal recently claimed the president once sent an NSFW birthday card and doodle toEpstein that included a drawing of a nude woman and an ominous message: We have certain things in common, Jeffrey A pal is a wonderful thing. Allowing parents to opt kids out of lessons doesnt protect religious freedom. It destroys it.
Imagine a Protestant Christian parent removes their child from a school lesson covering the religious foundations of the transatlantic slave trade, claiming the content does not accurately portray their faith. My mind races, wondering what crucial, formative pieces of history that child could miss. How religious institutions participated in slavery? How slaveowners often cited the Bible to justify their actions? Or conversely, how theology helped shape resistance movements like abolition and Black liberation? Without this knowledge, students could not fully understand the complex intersections of faith, race, and power that continue to shape our world today. Related SCOTUS lets religious parents opt their kids out of LGBTQ+ books but they cant opt out of society America is supposed to be a melting pot, not a buffet. This is the dangerous reality to which the Mahmoud v. Taylor decision brings us closer, a reality that allows religious exemptions to undermine learning about critical subjects that create engaged and informed citizens. Dive deeper every day Join our newsletter for thought-provoking commentary that goes beyond the surface of LGBTQ+ issues Subscribe to our Newsletter today In a 6-3 ruling, the Supreme Court sided with a group of religious parents who claimed their First Amendment rights were violated when schools did not permit them to opt their children out of lessons featuring books with LGBTQ+ characters. The Court granted a preliminary injunction, allowing parents in Montgomery County to remove their children from lessons involving LGBTQ+ storybooks. This case isnt just about the nine books in question. Its about whether public schools will remain places where all children learn to respectfully engage with difference. As an interfaith and interspiritual minister, I know firsthand the deep value that religion can bring to peoples lives. As a Black, gay, former teacher, I also know the harm it can cause when its misused to exclude others. As the CEO of Tanenbaum, a secular nonprofit that works to build respect for religious difference in spaces including schools, my personal and professional values compel me to sound the alarm on Supreme Court cases like this one cases that ultimately hurt, not help, religious diversity and freedom. So, whats so dangerous about the Mahmoud v. Taylor outcome? First, it sets a precedent that allows parents to opt their children out of lessons they object to on religious grounds. This opens the door to opting out of subjects like Earth Day, critical thinking, and anti-drug use. This could also significantly harm teaching about religious diversity. In their argument, one of the petitioning parents claimed that the curriculum undermined their religious teachings at home. Now, imagine a public school teacher introduces a world religions unit in a social studies class. A parent objects, arguing that their child shouldnt have to learn about faiths that conflict with their own. Under this precedent, the school could grant an exemption that allows this student to skip the entire unit, limiting their exposure to diverse beliefs and practices.Interestingly, a 2011 study in Modesto, California, found that teaching world religions in public schools not only increased students tolerance to different religions but strengthened their own religious identity. Weve seen this in our own work, too. One student who engaged with Tanenbaum curricula shared, When learning about other religions, Ive noticed significant changes as my classmates feel pride in their beliefs. [Ive] become more understanding with people who [have] different beliefs than me we can openly discuss them without any disrespect. The need to protect access to foundational knowledge and values in public education is critical. In Justice Sotomayors dissent, she wrote, [The] decision guts our free exercise precedent and strikes at the core premise of public schools: that children may come together to learn not the teachings of a particular faith, but a range of concepts and views that reflect our entire society. Exposure to new ideas has always been a vital part of that project, until now.Another troubling outcome of this ruling is the increased stigmatization of the LGBTQ+ community. Permitting opt-outs sends a message to young students that learning about people who identify as LGBTQ+ is abnormal, impermissible, and unimportant. Yet over 2.5 million LGBTQ+ adults in the U.S. are parenting children under the age of 18. In addition to the potential consequences, the case raises several questions.Dissenting justices in Mahmoud v. Taylor highlighted an essential distinction between exposure and coercion. Justice Sotomayor wrote, Simply being exposed to beliefs contrary to your own does not amount to prohibiting the free exercise of religion. This begs the question: Are the books instructional, or do they simply share true and real identities that exist around us?Discomfort with LGBTQ+ topics is not the same as a violation of religious freedom. If we adopted the Courts understanding of exposure here into daily life, how would we ever encounter communities of different beliefs and backgrounds? Creating informed, empathetic, and active citizens starts in our classrooms, which is why public education must remain a space for all students to learn about themselves, their peers, and the diversity that makes up our world. It is up to each of us to behave in ways that protect religious freedom and create spaces to respectfully explore identity. Our choices can bring us closer to the pluralistic society we should all work towards, one that transcends mere tolerance to fully welcome people of all faiths and backgrounds. Its not just a legal obligation; its a moral one.Rev. Mark E. Fowler is the CEO of Tanenbaum Center for Interreligious Understanding, a secular and nonsectarian nonprofit that works to transform individuals and institutions to confront hate and build respect for religious difference. Fowler is also an ordained minister and graduate of One Spirit Interfaith Seminary in NYC.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Gay educator & U.S. citizen detained for hours at border: The definition of psychological terror
The superintendent of a Vermont school district says he was detained by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents while re-entering the country with his husband on Monday, an experience he described as the definition of psychological terror. They falsely stated that I, a U.S. citizen, have no Constitutional rights at a point of entry, and officers became increasingly agitated as I continued to assert my rights regardless, Winooski schools superintendent Wilmer Chavarria wrote in an email to the districts leadership following the incident, according to Seven Days. Related Drag Race queen Xunami Muse leaves the country citing immigration status One fan likened Xunamis decision to self-deportation amid the Trump administrations ongoing ICE raids. The independent Vermont news outlet reports that Chavarria, who grew up in Nicaragua but has held U.S. citizenship since 2018, was reentering the U.S. using the expedited Global Entry process at Houstons George Bush Intercontinental Airport following a trip with his husband, Cyrus Dudgeon, to visit family in Nicaragua. Despite having used the pre-approved Global Entry process many times before, CPB agents separated him from Dudgeon and subjected him to five hours of questioning. Dudgeon was not detained. Insights for the LGBTQ+ community Subscribe to our briefing for insights into how politics impacts the LGBTQ+ community and more. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Agents reportedly refused to allow Chavarria to speak to a lawyer, telling him he did not have the right to legal counsel.According to local CBS affiliate WCAX, agents questioned the sincerity of Chavarria and Dudgeons marriage as well as his employment with the Winooski School District. Chavarria told the station that agents tried to access his computer, which held sensitive student data. He refused to give up his passwords, however, and agents reportedly would not allow him to contact anyone, even when he offered to get in touch with the school district to get permission to turn over his passwords. Chavarria, who was ultimately released and reunited with Dudgeon in Houston, said he did not know why he was detained. However, he noted that he has been very vocal and a big advocate for the protection of vulnerable communities in the state of Vermont and the nation.Im pretty sure Im in a very visible and critical position, and Im not surprised when things like this happen, he told WCAX.In a statement to WCAX, CBP did not specify why Chavarria was detained, saying only that the agency follows strict policies and directives when it comes to searching electronic media. These searches are rare, highly regulated, and have been used in identifying and combating serious crimes, including terrorism, smuggling, human trafficking, and visa fraud. According to both WCAX and Seven Days, Chavarria received an email Tuesday in which CBP informed him that his Global Entry status had been revoked. He also warned that amid the Trump administrations ongoing mass deportations and detention of undocumented immigrants, Rights are being violated for U.S. citizens, as well, and thats going to continue to happen and get worse if people dont mobilize quickly enough. On Tuesday, the Winooski School District board released a statement on Facebook condemning CBPs treatment of Chavarria as deeply disturbing and unacceptable.Superintendent Chavarria is an exemplary leader and a beloved member of the Winooski School District community. His commitment to our students, families, and staff is unwavering. The Board stands firmly in support of him and his family during this time. While we are aware that such detentions are increasingly becoming more common across the country, we must be clear: this is not normal. It is wrong. It is inhumane. It is unjust. The board also called on elected leaders and federal agencies to investigate the incident and take meaningful steps to prevent such abuses from continuing. Out Rep. Becca Balint (D-VT) addressed Chavarrias detainment in a Tuesday evening speech on the House floor.I take to the floor today because Im angry, and so are Vermonters, Balint said. We are furious because of what happened yesterday to a Vermonter, a U.S. citizen, as he attempted to return home. Wilmer Chavarria is a community leader. He is a school superintendent in my state. He was held and interrogated for hours by CBP agents and given no reason for his detainment. We are talking about a U.S. citizen here. So when we say this can happen to any of us, this is what were talking about. This kind of violation of our constitutional rights is how leaders use terror to intimidate us into silence, Balint continued. When community leaders, school superintendents, are being detained because of the color of their skin and the sound of their last name, we need to hold onto our collective outrage. We do not need to accept this. This is not what Americans want.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

As y'all know, on Thursday night, I was sadly evicted from the Big Brother house," Zae So I'm back I'm in Kentucky right now visiting my family, but I wanted to open this up for questions and let y'all ask something about me or about my experience on Big Brother, and I'm gonna try and get as many as I can So let them rip."One of the questions that jumped right in Zae's direction pertained to his sexuality a big topic of discussion among fans who watched him in the Big Brother 27 live feeds and/or caught up with week 1 of the show. When asked "Are you bisexual?" by Big Brother fans, Zae shared this answer.Zae stared answering the question "Are you bisexual?" (shown above him) by saying that this was "probably one of the most common things that I've seen circulating about me on social media; It's about my sexual orientation."And, yes, a quick peek at X/Twitter made it clear that the gays were eager to ask the Big Brother 27 star about that.Zae answered, "I am straight. I know I like to wear short shorts and my hair is dyed, so a lot of people, like, because of that, think that I am bisexual or gay." (@) "But I am not," Zae added. "I am straight. "It was not my intention to offend anybody. I know those were offensive and words that nobody should say. I tried to correct myself as soon as I could and move on from it. And hopefully people don't look at me as less or a bad person because of the things that I said. But I do apologize to anyone affected or offended."Zae continued the Instagram Q&A answering other questions from Big Brother fans. The same Instagram Q&A that featured Zae answering the question about whether or not he was bisexual continued with other fun facts being shared by the Big Brother 27 houseguest as the fans asked him more questions.Below, a few other fun facts about Zae for anyone who's curious to learn more about the first boot of Big Brother 27 this year's season that includes the return of Rachel Reilly as a houseguest after making her reality TV debut on Big Brother 12, returning (to win) Big Brother 13, and making subsequent appearances on The Amazing Race."Are you still Mormon?"Zae answered:"No but l have nothing bad to say about the church or its followers.""Ever plan on returning to cheer?"Zae answered:"No, cheer was sick, but | probably won't do it again."Zae answered:"They always do us so dirty."He tagged Matt Hardeman (@matt_hardeman) in his response, who was the first-eliminated houseguest of Big Brother 26."Not a question but your lips are sosososo nice."Zae answered:"Thank you!"He pointed at his lips."Shoe size? [thinking face emoji]."Zae answered:"11.5.""How much Big Brother had you watched before going into the house?"Zae answered:"Only 1 full season. weary face emoji; pensive face emoji].""Are you really a whitexican (white & mexican)?"Zae answered:"I'm white but I speak Spanish.""As the bun of the burger boys, how big is your butt actually?"Zae answered:"Huge."For context, Zae was included in a seemingly short-lived alliance named "Burger Boys" alongside fellow Big Brother 27 houseguests Rylie Jeffries, Vince Panaro, Will Williams, and Zach Cornell.Big Brother season 27 airs new episodes every Thursday, Friday, and Sunday on CBS, as well as streaming on Paramount+.See on Instagram

Matt Rogers responds to Jamie Lee Curtis red carpet debate from Las Culturistas Culture Awards
The intense discourse over Oscar-winning actress Jamie Lee Curtis alongside Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers in a video at the 2025 Las Culturistas Culture Awards has gotten an official response and clarification from the Las Culturistas cohosts. The fan reaction and news coverage of an interaction between the Las Culturistas cohosts and Curtis was addressed by Rogers in a video from Instagram stories in which he noted this will be "our only comment on the matter.""Anything that happens on the Las Culturistas Culture Awards red carpet or purple carpet, as it were is unserious. You cannot make it serious," Rogers said. "I can't express how fun it is to watch it get, like, real media coverage. It's crazy. It's part of the joke. But you cannot Please don't start something between us and Jamie Lee Curtis when there's nothing there, you guys."Rogers added, "That was the first time we were meeting, and she was being funny, and we were being funny back. She came out and brought a lot of energy, and we're grateful to her. We're grateful to everyone. So, please, it's not that serious; it's the Culture Awards. I love you guys so much."In a previous video, Rogers clarified what fans can expect from the Las Culturistas podcast this week and shared some general context about how things are going. "As you can imagine, it's been a crazy week, and Bowen is in China visiting family," he explained. "We're putting together the Culture Awards kind of at the same time So we are busy, to say the least, and we're gonna take the week off the podcast."Rogers added, "We're gonna release the nominations as one big, full episode, so it'll at least be something, but we just need a break. The good news is, the Culture Awards is one of the craziest things that's ever been committed to celluloid. We're gonna deliver you a chaotic mess of a fever dream of a gay fantasia on themes.""So, thanks for understanding this week. We out," he concluded. The moment that inadvertently sparked this misunderstanding happened in a video posted by Vulture while covering the 2025 Las Culturistas Culture Awards purple carpet. The video, titled "What's My Line," was described as "a Vulture series where we ask what pop culture quote is stuck in your head."This particular video started with Rogers quoting Reese Witherspoon as Elle Woods ("What, like it's hard?") in Legally Blonde. It then featured Yang quoting Julia Roberts as the title character in Erin Brockovich: "I'm not talking to you, bitch!"Yang's enthusiastic Erin Brockovich line delivery seemingly prompted Curtis to leave her own red-carpet interview so that she could apparently reprimand Rogers and Yang. "Listen, bring the whole fucking thing down," Curtis said while gesturing that they should be less loud."You're gonna hate this show then," Yang replied."We'll sit you in the back," Rogers added. "Hey, maybe you could bring it up!"Curtis was kidding, and so were the Las Culturistas cohosts, as clarified by Rogers in his new Instagram videos.@vultureWe asked people on the purple carpet at the Las Culturistas Culture Awards what pop culture line is stuck in their head @bowenyang @mattrogerstho @jamieleecurtis @rachelbloom @meredithmarks @joelkimbooster #AaronJackson @gertie_bird @heathergay_slc @bronwynnewportIt's also worth noting that Rogers and Yang have had a great relationship with Vulture having done recaps and interviews for the publication about reality shows like RuPaul's Drag Race, Queer Eye, and America's Next Top Model for quite a few years which certainly adds to the meta humor of this entire situation. The Las Culturistas Culture Awards 2025 ceremony airs on Tuesday, August 5, on Bravo. The telecast will be available for streaming on Peacock the next day.See on Instagram
