WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMOver 100,000 people march in biggest trans Pride event in historyOver 100,000 people marched in Londons Trans+ Pride event on Saturday, making it the biggest trans Pride march in the world, according to The Guardian. The events theme, Existence and Resistance, was developed in response to the recent U.K. Supreme Court ruling that the legal definition of a woman in non-discrimination law is based on biological sex rather than gender identity. It was an emotional and powerful day, the events co-founder Lewis G. Burton told the aforementioned publication. At a time when the Supreme Court is making sweeping decisions about trans people without consulting a single trans person or organisation, and when a small, well-funded lobby of anti-trans campaigners continues to dominate headlines and waste public resources, our community came together to show what real strength, solidarity and care looks like. Related Cuba now allows trans people to change ID gender markers without requiring surgery But even though the country fully covers gender-affirming medical care, its quite hard to access. The march began at 1 p.m. local time on Saturday and proceeded for just under two miles, from near the BBC Broadcasting House to the Parliament Square Gardens. The events speakers included Heartstopper actress Yasmin Finney and activist Caroline Litman, whose trans daughter took her life in 2022 after waiting nearly three years for gender-affirming healthcare, the BBC reported. Insights for the LGBTQ+ community Subscribe to our briefing for insights into how politics impacts the LGBTQ+ community and more. Subscribe to our Newsletter today LondonTrans+ Pridebegan in 2019 as an alternative to the citys more commercial Pride march. This years event gained over 40,000 additional participants, compared to last years crowd of 60,000, the BBC noted. The message was clear: We will not be erased, Burton said. Our existence is natural, historic and enduring. You can try to take away our rights, but you will never remove us from society. We are a part of humanity and the public will not stand by while harm is done to our community. The event occurred in the aftermath of a recent Supreme Court case in whichFor Women Scotland (FWS), an anti-trans organization, mounted a legal challenge over the definition of a woman under the countrys 2010 Equality Act. After the court ruled that the laws definition of a woman is based on biological sex, theU.K.s Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) said trans women and menshould not be permitted to use the public restroom facilitiesthat align with their gender. Alex Parmar-Yee, from Trans+ Solidarity Alliance one of the groups that marched in the weekend event said the EHRCs guidance has not provided any additional clarity, and actually is going to devastate the lives of trans people [who] will lose access to essential services and spaces. The main concern really here is that it feels like theres not been a consideration of trans members of the community, and that this guidance will pass behind closed doors, without the scrutiny, and without visibility, and without democracy, Parmar-Yee added, saying that she and other trans organizations are pushing for the government to provide greater transparency around trans-related policies and guidances.Speaking with Attitude magazine, activist Litman expressed concern over The Online Safety Act, a newly enacted U.K. law that requires websites with explicit adult material to conduct user age checks. Critics of the law worry itll be used to block age-appropriate LGBTQ+ resources for minors. Its really scary, Litman said. [My late daughter] Alice got a lot of help and support online, whilst feeling very isolated in her own lived experience world that didnt really have anything for her. Her online world really protected her and so both these legislations are really concerning and need to be seriously looked at for reversal. When asked what she would tell her daughter now, Litman said, Find your community. Thats what Id say find your community. Because theyll save you, theyll look after you, theyll nurture you and support you and get you through this. To do this together. Thats what Id say to her. And I love her. Love. I love, I love, love, love, I love.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 64 Просмотры 0 предпросмотр

WWW.PRIDE.COM'King of Drag' laid out a blueprint for a revolutionary masculinityThis week, King of Drag's inaugural season took its final bow, crowning its first-ever King of Drag. For fans of the artform, it was a moment long awaitedeagerly, impatiently, and with no small amount of outrageas similar shows went on for season after season with little to no king representation. So when this groundbreaking series, with its cast of incredible AFAB, nonbinary, and trans masc stars finally dropped, it felt like a collective exhale. An essential and yet underrepresented segment of the drag community was finally getting its due. And get it, they did. The show proved to be an incredible showcase for drag kings from across the nation, offering up a wonderfully diverse interpretation of kinging. King of Drag had it all: It was glamorous, campy, hilarious, and thought-provoking. For those watching, it tugged on our heartstrings and filled us with a productive, indignant kind of ragerage at the industrys previous lack of inclusion, the cruelty of parents who dismissed or demonized their queer and transgender kids, and a political climate that seeks to criminalize their very existence. To be clear, the world would be a lesser place without their presence. The show did more than just make space or entertain, thoughit laid out a blueprint for a revolutionary new kind of masculinity. Its a vision of maleness that pushes back against the oppressive individualism of patriarchyone that offers freedom for women, trans and nonbinary folks, and yes, men.Speaking with the kings each week as they left the competition, one theme came up again and again: their deep support for one another, despite the trappings of reality show competition. Dick Von Dyke shared a story in which the kings, en route to buy materials for a design challenge, led by Henlo Bullfrog hatched a plannot just to shop for themselves, but for each other. They all enthusiastically signed on, pulling materials that would not only elevate their looks but help their brothers shine, too, sharing supplies, photos, and encouragement along the way. This isnt just good sportsmanship. It speaks to something deeper about the kings and the spirit of King of Drag itself, and how powerfully they differ from other competition series which rely on conflict and reflect a drag-eat-drag world. While both masculinity and reality TV have traditionally been rooted in individualism and the climb to the top, King of Drag and its stars disrupted that norm. They transformed what was ostensibly a competition show into a collaborative exercise. This series proves how much more entertaining these types of programs could be if the primary conversation around them wasnt about whos failing, should go home, etc. but rather the passion and artistry of their cast. What could we accomplish as a people, as a species, if masculinity meant selfless cooperation and the uplifting of others, regardless of gender? How free would each and every one of us be if success didnt always require a scramble to the top over a heap of bodiesboth metaphorical and, heartbreakingly, actually? To put it in fictional terms: a masculinity that is more in line with Ted Lasso than, say, John Wayne. The kings themselves have a way of describing this: king shit.We act with a level of dignity and respect for each other and humility, and [honor], Buck Wylde, a Texas-based king who competed in the season previously told PRIDE. They explained how this collective-focused ethos becomes a part of the ways they express and perform masculinity. Backstage at our king shows, we say stuff like, You make me want to be a better King. We grab each other and hug and say, You're respected in your industry. We bump chests and we build each other up before we go out on stage, just so we remind each other how important each of us is to each other and to the world. The kindness and the puffery are the point; and the result is more freedom. Freedom to take up space, freedom to express themselves and their art, freedom to feel they are enough. It's a concept that bell hooks explored in her book A Will to Change. In patriarchal culture, males are not allowed simply to be who they are and to glory in their unique identity, she wrote. Their value is always determined by what they do. In an anti-patriarchal culture males do not have to prove their value and worth. They know from birth that simply being gives them value, the right to be cherished and loved. Its not lost on me that King of Drag may also represent the greatest and most diverse cast of trans mascs weve seen on screen together. The show doesnt tokenize its trans menit celebrates them, offering a platform to express their trans maleness, opening up about what it cost them and how they were rewarded by bravely claiming their truest identity. Simply existing and exploring their craft on screen is a political act, and the brotherly connection the cast shared in essence helped create a net that allowed them the space and the safety to do so without looking over their shoulders, at least while they were in the Man Cave. With that journey comes a lot of thought, soul-searching, and incredible art. But it also made for rich and thoughtful conversations about gender identity and masculinity. For some, kinging is about reconciling both the masculine and feminine within us, as Alexander the Great described to PRIDE: I feel like my drag has already gone on such a journey of gender expansiveness and helping people understand that masculinity can be soft, flamboyant, effeminate, whatever, and still be masculine. For others, it was about decoupling toxicity from maleness. Or for contestant Big D, it was about defanging toxic masculinity by lampooning it. My job is to take toxic masculinity and make it funny, they told PRIDE.While they make light of mediocre masculinity in their work, its born of great empathy. One of the things I really do in my workshops is get participants to access the sadness and rage that is at the heart of a lot of the masculine experience. Its actually really hard being a man, Big D explained.Again, bell hooks spoke to this exact concept: Learning to wear a mask (that word already embedded in the term masculinity) is the first lesson in patriarchal masculinity that a boy learns, she wrote in A Will to Change. He learns that his core feelings cannot be expressed if they do not conform to the acceptable behaviors sexism defines as male. Asked to give up the true self in order to realize the patriarchal ideal, boys learn self-betrayal early and are rewarded for these acts of soul murder.Ultimately, masculinitylike femininityis a social construct. One we collectively create, define, uphold, or deconstruct. What if masculinity and its expression could expand to become something that centers empathy, that eschews the individualism that preys on the weak and rewards the disposability of others? This feels particularly poignant in this moment, when the man occupying the White House is taking his country for a terrible ride as he exemplifies the most heinous and harmful aspects of toxic masculinity: cruelty, corruption, and pursuit of self over all else and with depraved abandon. It may feel like an impossible task, but King of Drags greatest contribution might not just be the queer and trans joy it highlighted and centeredthough that was important and impactful toobut the roadmap it incidentally laid out for a radical new way to be a man.0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 49 Просмотры 0 предпросмотр

GAYETY.COMJamie Lee Curtis Says Shes Been Self-Retiring for 30 Years and Preparing for a Graceful Exit from HollywoodJamie Lee Curtis is no stranger to reinvention. The Oscar-winning actress has portrayed scream queens, action heroines, and sitcom moms over the span of her five-decade career. But as she prepares to return to theaters in Disneys Freakier Friday, the 66-year-old star is speaking candidly about what may be her final act on her terms. In a reflective new interview with The Guardian, Curtis revealed that she has been self-retiring for 30 years, inspired by the painful trajectory she witnessed in the careers of her parents Hollywood legends Janet Leigh and Tony Curtis.I witnessed my parents lose the very thing that gave them their fame and their life and their livelihood, when the industry rejected them at a certain age, Curtis said. I watched them reach incredible success and then have it slowly erode to where it was gone. And thats very painful. For Curtis, those formative experiences shaped not just her perspective, but her plan. Rather than waiting for the roles to dry up or for casting directors to stop calling, she has long been strategizing an elegant exit from the industry.I have been prepping to get out, so that I dont have to suffer the same as my family did, she shared. I want to leave the party before Im no longer invited. While Curtis may be pondering her final curtain call, her career is anything but winding down. She reprises her iconic role opposite Lindsay Lohan in Freakier Friday, the highly anticipated sequel to the 2003 Disney body-swap hit. The film premieres nationwide on August 8.In recent years, Curtis has also taken bold strides behind the camera, founded a production company, and even won her first Oscar a long-awaited recognition for an actress long underestimated. But even with the accolades and a packed schedule, Curtis says shes more focused than ever on protecting her energy and legacy.Im in charge now. I feel like a boss, she said. And I have no problem saying: Back the f off. That confidence has been hard-won. For decades, Curtis felt boxed in by typecasting often seen as the horror ingnue or comedic foil, rarely as the emotionally complex character actor she knew herself to be.Her breakout guest role as Donna Berzatto on The Bear allowed her to explore new emotional depths. As the estranged, alcoholic mother of the shows central character, Curtis delivered a gut-wrenching performance that earned widespread acclaim. But for Curtis, the role was not emotionally draining it was liberating.Heres whats traumatic: not being able to express your range as an artist, she said. To spend your entire public life holding back range. And depth. And complexity. And contradiction. And rage. And pain. And sorrow. Thats traumatic. She continued, To have been limited to a much smaller palette of creative, emotional work thats the toll. The Bear was the release.Curtis credited The Bear creator Chris Storer with giving her the space to fully inhabit the character and trust her instincts. The writing leads you everywhere you need to go. It was exhilarating, she said. The toll has been 40 years of holding back something I know is here.Still, the idea of bowing out gracefully remains top of mind for Curtis a mix of self-awareness and a desire to protect her dignity in an industry that often has little use for women past a certain age. While she admits retirement has been a long time coming, she isnt shutting any doors just yet. Instead, shes simply curating whats next and what she no longer has to do.I want to leave while I still love it, she said. Not when it starts to feel like a job I cant quit.Curtiss comments echo broader conversations in Hollywood about ageism, especially toward women, and the pressure to constantly remain relevant. For Curtis, choosing when and how to step back is its own form of power.Even with an exit plan in mind, Curtis is enjoying the now. Between the buzz around Freakier Friday and the praise for her dramatic turns,Source0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 93 Просмотры 0 предпросмотр

THEONION.COMHulk Hogans Spasming Cadaver Body Slams MorticianCLEARWATER, FLAfter undergoing a medical emergency and dying last week at the age of 71, Hulk Hogans spasming cadaver reportedly lifted a mortician high above its head Monday and body slammed the professional. At approximately 1:34 p.m., Hulk Hogans deceased corpse underwent spontaneous convulsions, at which point the cadaver bolted upright, ripped off its body bag, and started pummeling the mortician, said Clearwater funeral home director Audrey Pearson, adding that due to the rapid stiffening of the WWE legends muscles, Hogans body also emitted one final Brother before climbing up on top of the embalming table, leaping off, and propelling itself more than 10 feet into the air to deliver a devastating leg drop. Although Hogans brain activity had ceased days ago, his muscles were still able to contract enough to slap a bottle of formaldehyde out of the morticians hand, put him in a headlock, and slam his skull several times into the door of a refrigerated cabinet. According to reports, Hogans corpse then involuntarily flexed its biceps, pumped its arms into the air, and let out a guttural scream, its muscles finally stiffening as it fell to the ground with a hand cupped around its ear.The post Hulk Hogans Spasming Cadaver Body Slams Mortician appeared first on The Onion.0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 89 Просмотры 0 предпросмотр

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMJudge blocks Trump from denying federal grant money to shelters that serve trans peopleA federal judge has blocked the Trump administrations anti-DEI and anti-LGBTQ+ restrictions on federal grants given to organizations serving domestic and sexual violence survivors, LGBTQ+ youth, and unhoused communities. On Thursday, July 24, U.S. District Judge Melissa DuBose granted a request for a temporary restraining order blocking the conditions on federal grant programs administered by the U.S. Departments of Health and Human Services (HHS) and Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Advocate reported. The ruling came in response to a lawsuit filed last week by a nationwide coalition of nonprofit organizations, represented by Democracy Forward and other legal groups, challenging the restrictions. Related Federal judge slams Trumps anti-DEI orders as blatant anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination Have we fallen so low? Have we no shame? the judge asked during a Monday hearing. As the Washington Blade notes, the new restrictions were put in place in response to President Donald Trumps executive orders aimed, in part, at denying federal funding to organizations with diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs and that promote so-called gender ideology. Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today In their lawsuit, the coalition noted that both HUD and HHS had implemented new conditions prohibiting recipients from using grant funds to promote DEI programs and gender ideology. The restrictions, their lawsuit argues, put the organizations between a rock and a hard place. They can accept the conditionsand fundamentally change their programming, abandon outreach methods and programs designed to best serve their communities, and risk exposing themselves to ruinous liability, the complaint states. Or they can decline the funding and halt their funded programsdisplacing domestic and sexual violence survivors from safe housing, ending programs designed to reduce and prevent domestic and sexual violence, and putting previously homeless families and children back on the streets.Plaintiffs argue that the Trump administration is leveraging federal funding to advance the Presidents ideological vision, in violation of the law and the U.S. Constitutions separation of powers. The executive branch cannot unilaterally leverage funding Congress appropriated for use on programs Congress created to advance the executives own policy goals, the complaint states. The separation of powers does not allow thatand, here, Congress did not authorize the Departments to impose the new funding conditions. The new conditions on grant funding, the lawsuit argues, violate plaintiffs First Amendment rights by forcing grantees to voice the Administrations views on gender and by chilling grantees from promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion even when not using federal funds. They claim the restrictions also violate the Administrative Procedure Act by in some cases outright conflicting with governing law or failing to follow required procedure, and by being arbitrary and capricious in virtually every way that an agency action can be arbitrary and capricious. In a Friday, July 25, press release following DeBoses decision, Democracy Forward said that plaintiffs in the case will now submit a proposal for the precise scope of the temporary restraining order for the courts review. In a joint statement, the organizations said they welcomed the decision to halt the Trump administrations funding restrictions. These conditions threaten to undermine decades of progress in supporting survivors of violence, LGBTQI+ youth, and unhoused individuals. Our organizations exist to serve everyone with compassion and equity, and we will not be forced to choose between our values and mission and the communities we serve, they said. The courts order is a critical step in protecting life-saving programs and ensuring that the providers across the country can continue their work without political interference.DeBoses ruling, they said, affirms what we have long known, that the law does not permit any government to use its funding power to force service providers to abandon their core principles.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 57 Просмотры 0 предпросмотр

WWW.PRIDE.COMWas 'The Hunting Wives' lesbian storyline inspired by this real-life MAGA threesome scandal? The summers buzziest Netflix show is not only more sapphic than we ever could have predicted but also has a ripped-from-the-headlines plot line that had us glued to our screens. The Hunting Wives, adapted from May Cobbs bestselling novel, follows liberal Sophie ONeil (Brittany Snow) as she relocates from Cambridge, Mass. to small-town Texas where she befriends a group of gun-toting MAGA-esque conservative wives who are, of course, hiding all kinds of kinky secrets.Sophie isnt sure about her new home or the conservative Christians that inhabit it until she gets pulled into Margos (Malin Akerman) orbit. Married to oil baron Jed Banks (Dermot Mulroney), who has aspirations to become a GOP politician, Margo quickly starts flirting with Sophie before their relationship turns hot and heavy. Did we mention this show is very NSFW?Does the plot sound familiar? Yeah, we thought so too. While there are plenty of real-life stories this show is likely pulling from, we couldnt help but think about one of last years biggest Republican scandals that lines up a little too wellexcept for the murder of course! Its a well-known fact that Republicans are often hypocrites. GOP politicians will fight to strip women of their reproductive freedoms while simultaneously forcing their mistresses to get abortions, get plastic surgery at the same time theyre denying trans people the right to gender affirming surgery, and are vehemently homophobic while being caught having gay sex.Which is why its no surprise that The Hunting Wives is eerily similar to the Christian and Bridget Ziegler scandal that rocked the Florida Republican Party in 2024.Again, to be clear, without the murder. On the show, Margo and her GOP husband both sleep with other people Margo was having an affair with a close female friend before meeting Sophie and has secret hookups with her friends teenage son but its when the horny couple talk about their love of sharing women that the Zieglers immediately came to mind."Open marriages are for liberals. We just keep it simple. I don't sleep with other men, and Jed and I see a girl we like, we go for it," Margo tells Sophie after Jed makes a pass at her.The real-life scandal the show seems to draw inspiration from started with a rape allegation against former Republican politician Christian Ziegler, which led to a police investigation that brought the extremely anti-LGBTQ+ couples penchant for having threesomes with other women to light. This led to Christian Ziegler being forced to resign from his position as Republican Party of Florida Chair, much like Margos concern that she and her hubbys extracurricular activities might impact Jebs political aspirations. While the title The Hunting Wives refers to the womens love of boar hunting, Bridget Ziegler used to send her husband to bars to hunt for women they might be interested in by taking photos to send to his wife for approval. You know, the same wife who co-founded Moms for Liberty, an anti-LGBTQ+ conservative organization that tries to ban queer books and eliminate protections for trans students under the guise of parents rights. This is astounding though not surprising if youve been paying attention to Republican politics for the past 50 years level of hypocrisy is alive and well in the fictional Texas town in The Hunting Wives, where Margo tells the women she plans to start a pro-life program once Jed becomes governor, despite her secretly liberal private life.Seeing Republicans be hypocrites is infuriating in real life, but its surprisingly fun to watch a fictionalized version that is full of hot people having lesbian sex. GAYETY.COMEthan Slater Admits Wicked: For Good Will Give Marissa Bodes Nessarose Her Long-Awaited MomentAs anticipation builds for Wicked: For Good, the second installment of Jon M. Chus ambitious two-part film adaptation of the Broadway smash Wicked, more details are emerging about what audiences can expect when the movie hits theaters on November 21. While the spotlight will undoubtedly shine on Ariana Grandes Glinda and Cynthia Erivos Elphaba, co-star Ethan Slater promises that another character will finally get her due on the big screen. In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE during San Diego Comic-Con, Slater who plays the charming and conflicted Munchkin Boq teased that Marissa Bodes Nessarose will be given a powerful moment that fans of the original musical have never seen in any official recording. This is not a spoiler, I promise, Slater said with a smile. Theres something that never made it onto the original Broadway cast recording. And thats a really special moment that I remember filming and just being like, I cannot wait for people to see Marissa do this. While he didnt mention the song by name, fans of Wicked can reasonably guess Slater is referencing the emotional number The Wicked Witch of the East. The song, originally included in the stage show, was never featured on the original cast recording and as a result, has remained something of a hidden gem within the Wicked universe.Bode, who makes her film debut in the role of Nessarose Elphabas sister who becomes the tragic Wicked Witch of the East is poised to bring new depth to a character often overshadowed by her more glamorous or rebellious counterparts. Slaters comments suggest that her role will expand in Wicked: For Good, giving her both a narrative and musical spotlight that audiences have long waited to experience.Expanding the World of OzWicked: For Good will pick up where Wicked: Part One left off with Elphaba fleeing Oz in the wake of being labeled wicked by her former mentor, Madame Morrible, played by Academy Award winner Michelle Yeoh. Glinda, now ascending in power and public adoration, is left to navigate a kingdom divided by fear, magic, and misinformation. While the first film featured a host of beloved show tunes such as Defying Gravity, Popular, No One Mourns the Wicked, and Dancing Through Life, the second installment will dive even deeper into the emotional arcs of each character, including those whose stories were more peripheral in the stage production.Photo: Universal PicturesDirector Jon M. Chu confirmed in interviews late last year that Wicked: For Good will feature two original songs written exclusively for the film. While he stopped short of naming specific tracks, Chu hinted that The Wicked Witch of the East could finally get its time in the spotlight.Speaking with CinemaBlend in December 2024, Chu said, I dont know what Im allowed to say or not say at this point, because its still pretty early, but I will say its a great number. And I think its due time that people do get it so they can hear it over and over and over again.Marissa Bode: A Star on the RiseFor Marissa Bode, Wicked: For Good is more than a career debut its a meaningful breakthrough in representation. Bode, who uses a wheelchair in real life, brings authentic visibility to a character often portrayed as fragile or voiceless. The film is expected to provide her with a performance platform that challenges stereotypes and reclaims power for a character who has long been misunderstood.Marissa Bode attends the NYC premiere of Wicked at Museum of Modern Art on November 14, 2024 in New York City. (Photo by Taylor Hill/FilmMagic)The musical number in question could be a turning point for Bodes Nessarose, giving her character a voice that speaks to longing, loss, and agency a major departure from her previously limited storyline.Ethan Slater, who has described his time on Wicked as life-changing, has repeatedly praised his castmates and the collaborative energy of the film. In past interviews, hes emphasized how transformative it was to work with such a diverse and passionate team, both in front of and behind the camera.Photo: Universal PicturesBuilding Toward an Epic ConclusionRounding out the cast are Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard, and Bowen Yang as Pfannee. With high expectations set by the success of Wicked: Part One, Universal Pictures is positioning Wicked: For Good as one of the years most anticipated blockbusters. The first film grossed over $800 million worldwide and was praised for its dazzling visuals, heartfelt performances, and inclusive casting. Chus direction was particularly celebrated for translating the magic of the stage to screen while also expanding the emotional landscape of the story.Photo: Universal Pictures The decision to split the adaptation into two films has allowed for deeper storytelling, particularly when it comes to underdeveloped characters like Nessarose and Boq. Slaters recent remarks suggest that Wicked: For Good will not only provide closure but also give space to previously unheard voices in the land of Oz.A New Chapter in Queer-Positive FantasyWhile Wicked is not an explicitly LGBTQ+ story, it has long resonated with queer audiences. The narrative of being misunderstood, vilified, or othered especially in Elphabas arc has made it a powerful metaphor for queer identity and resilience. The addition of performers like Slater and Bode, who have been embraced by LGBTQ+ communities for their visibility and advocacy, only deepens that connection.Photo: Universal PicturesAs the November 21 release date approaches, Wicked: For Good is shaping up to be more than just a sequel its a celebration of complexity, compassion, and long-overdue spotlight moments. And thanks to performers like Marissa Bode, those moments are finally being heard.Source0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 56 Просмотры 0 предпросмотр

WWW.PROPUBLICA.ORGAppeals Court Overturns Murder and Kidnapping Conviction in Etan Patz Disappearanceby Joaquin Sapien ProPublica is a nonprofit newsroom that investigates abuses of power. Sign up to receive our biggest stories as soon as theyre published. Last week, a federal appeals court overturned the conviction of Pedro Hernandez for the murder and kidnapping of Etan Patz, a 6-year-old New York boy who disappeared in 1979 in one of the most famous missing child cases in U.S. history. The three-judge panel ruled that a trial court judge had given jurors manifestly inaccurate guidance regarding a confession Hernandez made before he had been advised of his Miranda rights. Jurors asked whether, if they decided the first confession was involuntary, that meant they should disregard two videotaped confessions that came afterward. The trial judge said the answer is no and offered no further explanation. The appellate judges, in their opinion, said that by doing so, the state trial court contradicted clearly established federal law. They threw out Hernandezs conviction and ordered that he be released or retried. He is now 64 years old and has served 13 years of a 25-years-to-life sentence in a case that has haunted New York City for decades. The body of the 51-page decision echoed stories published by ProPublica starting in 2013, before Hernandez was convicted, that raised questions about the veracity and legality of his confessions. We reported that Hernandez met many of the criteria of a person prone to making false confessions, a growing phenomenon and leading cause of wrongful conviction. We also discovered that Hernandezs statements to law enforcement and others over the years were inconsistent and did not match the known facts of the case. On the morning of May 29, 1979, Patz was allowed to walk alone to his school bus stop two blocks away and then vanished. His disappearance ignited national concern around missing children, as he became one of the first milk carton kids and his image was plastered across New York City. A massive search ensued, and law enforcement spent thousands of hours looking for him: Divers plunged into the East River searching for his remains following a tip from a psychic. Leads were chased as far as Israel. But no arrests were made. No charges brought. In 2012, New York police and the FBI suddenly and very visibly took action on another lead, digging up the basement of a workshop near the Patz family home used by a carpenter who knew Etan and was briefly considered a suspect. Nothing came of the dig, but the surge of media attention prompted one of Hernandezs relatives to call police with a tip about rumors that he had a role in the disappearance of Patz. New York police officers arrived at Hernandezs home in New Jersey on the morning of May 23, 2012, and brought him to a local prosecutors office to question him. In the ensuing hours, Hernandez asked several times to go home, said the officers were trying to trick him, sobbed, clutched at his stomach, lay on the floor in a fetal position, had a fentanyl patch placed on his chest to treat his chronic pain, and mentioned his mental illness diagnoses. After more than six hours, he told officers that he did it.He said he offered Patz a soda to lure him down into the basement of a bodega where he was working. He said he choked the boy, placed the body in a garbage bag, put the bag in a box and left it around the corner in broad daylight. It wasnt until after that confession that the officers read Hernandez his rights. They then had him repeat his statement in two video-recorded interviews over the next 24 hours. The stories he told contained several inconsistencies. The federal court found that the trial court judges instruction to the jury about the confessions was manifestly inaccurate, that the jury should have been given more thorough instructions and that it could in fact disregard the recorded confessions. The jury, which had asked about the un-Mirandized confession on the second of nine days of deliberations, was clearly grappling with what weight, if any, to give to the confessions, the appeals court wrote.ProPublica covered the early phases of the case against Hernandez extensively, interviewing the people to whom he supposedly confessed over the years and speaking with a variety of legal and psychological experts about how police tactics can induce false confessions. We found early on that Hernandezs previous claims of having harmed a child not only conflicted with each other but bore little resemblance to the details of his confession to police. Once, for example, he said that he had killed a Black child. Patz was white. We also learned that the bodega Hernandez was working out of had become a kind of police hub for the officers searching for Patz. Hernandez said in one of his confessions that he tossed the boys book bag behind a refrigerator there. It was never found. Experts told us that a handful of factors are often at play in producing false confessions and that Hernandezs situation contained many of them: He had low IQ, had a history of mental illness, and confessed to a high-profile crime where many of the details were widely known over the course of an intense, long interrogation. The judges, in their decision, took note of many of these same characteristics, which, in their view, made it all the more important for the jury to have proper instructions to evaluate the confessions. ProPublica also highlighted how the trial judge, Maxwell Wiley, held a hearing early in the proceedings to determine for himself whether Hernandez was properly informed of his rights and if he had the capacity to meaningfully waive them. He decided that the confession could be used. Later, Wiley, a former Manhattan prosecutor, limited the questions that could be asked about it and kept some subsequent hearings on the matter secret, drawing fire from several news organizations. Wiley, who is now retired, did not respond to calls for comment. In an email, Cyrus Vance Jr., who handled the case against Hernandez as Manhattan district attorney, said it was exceptionally challenging given the passage of time but also very strong. He said the recent decision came as a surprise, as other appellate courts had reviewed and sustained the confession and verdict. Clearly, the jury heard substantial expert testimony from both the prosecution and the defense, and considered both and the legal instructions by the court during deliberations and before the verdict, he said, adding that he continues to believe Hernandez is guilty and that his thoughts are with the Patz family and with Etan. Now Vances successor, Alvin Bragg, will have to decide whether to retry Hernandez for the third time. The first of his two trials ended in a hung jury. In a statement from Braggs office, a spokesperson said only: We are reviewing the decision.0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 108 Просмотры 0 предпросмотр

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMOhio GOP wants to forcibly out queer students to unsupportive parentsOhio State Republicans have introduced numerous anti-LGBTQ+ bills during this legislative session, including one that would out LGBTQ+ students to their parents if they receive any related counseling, a bill requiring transgender politicians to list their deadnames on public records, a law restricting trans students ability to use preferred names and pronouns in schools, and a ban on drag (even though federal courts have blocked similar laws for violating free speech rights).State Democrats have also introduced legislation to enshrine LGBTQ+ non-discrimination protections as well as a ban on so-called conversion therapy into law. None of the bills have received hearings so far. The Ohio legislature is currently on summer break and will reconvene in the fall. Related Anti-LGBTQ+ education head wants Bibles in schools. His colleagues say he plays porn in his office. Two state Board of Education members say Ryan Walters played a video with two nude women during a recent meeting. Among the bills introduced by state GOP legislators are Ohio House Bill 190, whichwould require parents to submit school permission slips for educators to address students by different names or pronouns that differ from the names and gender listed on their birth certificates. Republicans nationwide have tried to claim that affirming students trans and nonbinary identities without parental disclosure is a form of indoctrination and trans-ing kids. Insights for the LGBTQ+ community Subscribe to our briefing for insights into how politics impacts the LGBTQ+ community and more. Subscribe to our Newsletter today With that in mind, state Republicans have also introduced Ohio House Bill 172, which would ban kids 14 years and older from receiving mental health services without parental consent. This would include any child who receives school counseling services or monitoring related to the students mental, emotional, or physical health or well-being, or the schools ability to provide a safe and supportive learning environment for the student, the bill states. The bill would force educators to forcibly out queer students who seek counseling for LGBTQ+ issues, including students who are bothered by psychological distress, anti-LGBTQ+ bullying, or are experiencing problems with academic performance.Another bill, Ohio House Bill 196would require trans and nonbinary political candidates to list their deadnames on candidacy petitions. The bill comes after a 2024 incident in which several trans candidates for elected office in Ohio were disqualified because they didnt disclose their deadnames when filing campaign paperwork. One candidate said she didnt even know about this requirement. The following year, Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose (R) changed the candidate forms to require candidates to include all prior names used in the past 5 years, outside of those that resulted from marriage. This bill would essentially enshrine the form change into law. Currently, people in Ohio can change the gender marker on their state birth certificate, but it requires a court order.Lastly, Ohio House Bill 249,would ban drag performers from performing any place not designated as an adult entertainment facility. The bill would designate as an adult cabaret performance any act that involves performers or entertainers who exhibit a gender identity that is different from the performers or entertainers biological sex using clothing, makeup, prosthetic or imitation genitals or breasts, or other physical markers. The law ostensibly restricts any displays that are obscene or harmful to juveniles, and wouldnt prohibit or restrict a bona fide film, theatrical, or other artistic endeavor or performance that is not obscene or harmful to juveniles. But the states definition of obscenity refers to any content designed to appeal to the prurient interest, depict sexual conduct in a patently offensive way, and lack serious artistic, literary, or scientific value when taken as a whole. As such, the law would forbid any non-adult cabaret venue such as a library, movie theatre, playhouse, or bar from showing any media or performance that depicts cross-dressing or transgender individuals, if anyone considered them even remotely obscene. Courts have blocked similar drag bans from going into effect in Florida, Tennessee, and Texas, calling the laws vague, overbroad, and burdensome for businesses to follow without fear of persecution.State Democrats have introduced Ohio Senate Bill 70 (aka. the Ohio Fairness Act), which would include sexual orientation and gender identity into pre-existing anti-discrimination laws. The bill has been introduced in every legislative session since 2011, and this is the first time since 2018 that it has received no Republican support. The Ohio Capital Journal reported. Additionally, Ohio Senate Bill 71would ban any licensed health professionals from providing conversion therapy as a mental health treatment to minors. Numerous studies (and all major American medical and psychological associations) disavow conversion therapy as an ineffective, needless, pseudoscientific form of psychological torture. Nevertheless, over 1,320 conversion therapistsremain active across the U.S., including in states with bans in place, according toa report from the LGBTQ+ youth suicide prevention organization The Trevor Project. The report found that licensed therapists, counselors, social workers, and unlicensed practitioners advocate for and/or directly engage in conversion therapy. Many discreetly advertise their services using terms like sexual attraction fluidity exploration, rapid-onset gender dysphoria, sexual addiction, sexual wholeness, sexual integrity, and claims to help clients align their related behaviors with their faith.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 91 Просмотры 0 предпросмотр

WWW.PRIDE.COMEveryone Donald Trump has threatened since the Jeffrey Epstein scandal blew up in his faceJuly 2025 sparked a fresh new wave of Jeffrey Epstein controversy, thanks to none other than President Donald Trump.US Attorney General Pam Bondi said she had the Epstein client list "sitting on her desk" on February 21. At a MAGA influencer event held at the White House on February 27, she and her team revealed a "Phase 1" binder for the release. (@) Fast-forward to July 7, when the Department of Justice (DOJ) released a memo saying there was "no incriminating 'client list.'"MAGA began collapsing immediately, and #PedoPresident started trending on X (and hasnt stopped.) Petitions demanding transparency circulated, and Republican House Representative Thomas Massie introduced the Epstein Files Transparency Act to enforce a vote among the House of Representatives to release the governments full files on the Epstein case, saying, We all deserve to know whats in the Epstein files, whos implicated, and how deep this corruption goes. Trump responded by calling Massie the worst Republican Congressman. Other outspoken Trump supporters like Marjorie Taylor Greene, Laura Loomer, Alex Jones, and Megyn Kelly started to criticize the president, with MTG echoing Massie's call for truth. (@) Then, a bombshell Wall Street Journal scoop dropped on July 17, where investigators had found a bawdy 2003 birthday note, allegedly penned by Trump, in Epsteins personal files.Five days later, the DOJ admitted the presidents name appears multiple times in federal evidencebut then insisted there were no further Epstein files to release.Instead of mollifying supporters, Trump has inserted himself into the conversation surrounding the pardon of Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein's alleged co-conspirator. When asked if he would pardon her, he said he was "allowed to" if he wanted, but that "nobody's asked" him about it. See on InstagramThis move detonated his online base, whose Q-adjacent lore casts Maxwell as queenpin of a global trafficking ring. Overnight, some of Trumps most die-hard supporters turned their backs on him.His response has been to launch (or threaten) legal action in every direction as part classic countersuit strategy and part headline-scrambling fog machine.Below is a whos-who list of his current targets, and what each feud is really about. The Wall Street JournalOn July 18, Trump lodged a $10 billion libel complaint in federal court, saying the Journal fabricated the birthday letter and smeared him as Epsteins pal. Trumps lawyers immediately asked the judge to depose [owner Rupert] Murdoch within 15 days.I hope Rupert and his friends are looking forward to many hours of depositions and testimonies they will have to provide in this case, Trump said in a Truth Social post.Apart from Murdoch, the suit names the Journals Publisher, Dow Jones & Company, alongside its parent, News Corporation. The Dow Jones CEO, Robert Thomson, is also on there, as are the two reporters on the Epstein story bylines, Joseph Palazzolo and Khadeeja Safdar.Former President Barack ObamaGrowing tired of blaming everything on Biden, Trump turned back to his 2016 tactics of blaming everything on former President Barack Obama. At a July 22 press talk, Trump urged the DOJ to go after Obama, claiming he buried evidence tying Bill Clinton to Epstein and engineered the original Russia probe to retaliate. He later shared a photo across his social media channels depicting O.J. Simpsons car chase, with Obama in Simpsons drivers seat and Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance driving two cop cars behind him.See on InstagramIn doing so, Trump also inadvertently trolled Vance by using the digitally fattened face photo that many people use to make fun of him.Former President Bill ClintonThe second former president Trump went after was Bill Clinton, who has long faced conspiracy theories from MAGA over his relationship with Epstein.During a meeting with U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer while visiting Scotland, Trump said hed never had the privilege of going to Epstein Island and that it was one of his very good moments turning down the invite. However, he took it a step further, saying, Bill Clinton went there supposedly 28 times. I never went to the island, but [former Treasury Secretary] Larry Summers, I hear, went there, he was the head of Harvard. And many other people that are very big people, nobody ever talks about them. For the record, Clinton, like Trump, was also found on the Epstein flight logs. (@) However, even Democrats and Clinton supporters are just as willing to hang him as they are Trump, but if he says his name being on there is a lie, who's to say the same isn't true for Clinton?Former Vice President Kamala HarrisAs if two former presidents werent enough, Trumps also turning his gaze to former Vice President and 2024 challenger Kamala Harris, who he now says ran a campaign funded by illegal celebrity payments. Hes hinted that the DOJ should indict her based on wire fraud. In another Truth Social rant, Trump said he was looking at the large amount of money owed by Democrats, after the Presidential Election, saying theyd admitted to paying, probably illegally, for celebrity endorsements. He later emphasized, YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO PAY FOR AN ENDORSEMENT. IT IS TOTALLY ILLEGAL TO DO SO. Can you imagine what would happen if politicians started paying for people to endorse them.Beyonc, Al Sharpton, and OprahIn the same Truth Social post targeting Harris, Trump also went after Beyonc, Oprah Winfrey, and Al Sharpton for various reasons. As for Queen Bey, he (falsely) said she was paid $11 million for an ENDORSEMENT (she never sang, not one note, and left the stage to a booing and angry audience!)Oprah allegedly took $3 million for expenses, while Sharpton, whom he called a total lightweight and low rated TV anchor, allegedly took $600,000 forsomething.Sharpton refuted the claims on MSNBC, saying, This is the second or third time lawyers for National Action Network are looking at whether we can sue him for defamation because he had knowledge this time that there was no endorsement and that I didnt get any money. This went to the nonprofit Im connected to. ABC News and NBC NewsEvery news that doesnt worship the ground he walks on is Fake News in the Trump world, and neither ABC nor NBC is safe from his wrath.Fresh off a $16 million settlement from Paramount, the owners of CBS, Trump called for the networks to lose their licenses for being political pawns for the Democratic Party. He first attacked their viewership and management, then doubled down on his stance that networks arent allowed to be political pawns, but only for the Democratic Party.Shockingly, following the settlement with Paramount, Trump has done nothing to bring any legal action against South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone for that epic takedown of him on the most recent season premiere, showing him in bed with Satan and making fun of his small penis. So, can the lawsuit blitz bury the Epstein story?Hopefully not.The $10 billion WSJ case will crawl through discovery; Obama and Clinton enjoy presidential immunity from most civil claims; campaign-finance prosecutions would require evidence the FEC says it hasnt seen; and broadcast licenses cant be yanked just because he says so.What this strategy does do however, is keep conservative media focused on Trumps counter-punches instead of the potential impending pardon and withholding of the actual files. You know, his usual distract and deflect MO.Whether the presidents scatter-shot legal barrage can recapture these votersor will simply keep Epstein in the headlinesis an open question. For now, the only certainty is that the defendant list keeps growing, and it's not likely to stop anytime soon. And here we were, hoping theyd simply release the files.0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 77 Просмотры 0 предпросмотр
