George R.R. Martin Finally Finishes Writing Sequel To Erin Brockovich
SANTA FE, NMStressing that fans of the franchise were about to be richly rewarded for their patience, author George R.R. Martin announced Tuesday that he had finally finished writing his sequel to the 2000 film Erin Brockovich. At long last, the wait is overmy script for Erin Brockovich 2: A Kiss Of Chromium is officially complete! Martin said in a press statement, adding that the project had stalled as a result of his involvement in other creative ventures, as well as his perfectionism and desire to give the Erin Brockovich character the ending he felt she deserved. It took more than a decade of hard work to build out the setting of California enough to make this sequel feel real. But I think fans are ultimately going to be glad I took my time writing it, even the ones who spent years badgering me to hurry up! Now that its complete, I have plans for a prequel series set 8,000 years before the original Erin Brockovich. At press time, Martin had reportedly delayed the sequel for rewrites after spoilers about Erin Brockovichs life leaked on her Wikipedia page. The post George R.R. Trump will visit the Kennedy Center as honorees are announced and he and center hint at renovations
The Kennedy Center is seen Aug. 13, 2019, in Washington. (AP Photo/Jacquelyn Martin, File)2025-08-13T04:02:06Z WASHINGTON (AP) President Donald Trump, embracing his new role as chairman of the Kennedy Center, was set to be on hand Wednesday as the recipients of its annual award are announced and both he and the performing arts venue hint at coming renovations to its building. Trump avoided the Kennedy Center Honors awards program during his first term after artists said they would not attend out of protest. This year, the Republican president has taken over as the Kennedy Centers new chairman and fired the board of trustees, which he replaced with loyalists. In a Truth Social post on Tuesday, Trump teased a name change for the center, formally the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, and said it would be restored to its past glory.GREAT Nominees for the TRUMP/KENNEDY CENTER, whoops, I mean, KENNEDY CENTER, AWARDS, Trump wrote. He said work was being done on the site that would be bringing it back to the absolute TOP LEVEL of luxury, glamour, and entertainment. It had fallen on hard times, physically, BUT WILL SOON BE MAKING A MAJOR COMEBACK!!! he wrote. In a statement on its social media feed, the Kennedy Center said it is honored to host Trump, who will be visiting for the third time since January, and hinted that he would announce a construction project. Thanks to his advocacy, our beautiful building will undergo renovations to restore its prestige and grandeur, the venue said. We are also excited to be announcing this years INCREDIBLE slate of Kennedy Center Honorees. Trump complained during a March visit that the building is in a state of tremendous disrepair. It is unclear how this years honorees were chosen, though Trump had indicated he wanted a more active role. Historically, a bipartisan advisory committee selects the recipients, who over the years have ranged from George Balanchine and Tom Hanks to Aretha Franklin and Stephen Sondheim. A message sent to the Kennedy Center press office asking how this years honorees were selected wasnt returned Tuesday. The Kennedy Center did post this on social media, however: Coming Soon ... A country music icon, an Englishman, a New York City Rock band, a dance Queen and a multi-billion dollar Actor walk into the Kennedy Center Opera House ...In the past, Trump has floated the idea of granting Kennedy Center Honors status to singer-songwriter Paul Anka and Sylvester Stallone, one of three actors Trump named as Hollywood ambassadors earlier this year. Anka was supposed to perform My Way at Trumps first inaugural and backed out at the last moment. The Kennedy Center Honors were established in 1978 and have been given to a broad range of artists. Until Trumps first term, presidents of both major political parties traditionally attended the annual ceremony, even when they disagreed politically with a given recipient. Prominent liberals such as Barbra Streisand and Warren Beatty were honored during the administration of Republican George W. Bush, and a leading conservative, Charlton Heston, was feted during the administration of Democrat Bill Clinton. In 2017, after honoree Norman Lear declared that he would not attend a White House celebration in protest of Trumps proposed cuts to federal arts funding, Trump and first lady Melania Trump decided to skip the Kennedy Center event and remained away throughout his first term. Honorees during that time included such Trump critics as Cher, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Sally Field. Since taking office for a second time, Trump has taken a much more forceful stance on the Kennedy Center and inserted himself into its governance. Besides naming himself chairman and remaking the board, he also has indicated he would take over decisions regarding programming at the center and vowed to end events featuring performers in drag. The steps have drawn further criticism from some artists. In March, the producers of Hamilton pulled out of staging the Broadway hit musical in 2026, citing Trumps aggressive takeover of the institutions leadership. Other artists who canceled events include actor Issa Rae, singer Rhiannon Giddens and author Louise Penny. House Republicans added an amendment to a spending bill that Trump signed into law in July to rename the Kennedy Centers Opera House after Melania Trump, but that venue has yet to be renamed. Maria Shriver, a niece of the late President Kennedy, a Democrat, has criticized as insane a separate House proposal to rename the entire center after Trump.Recipients of the Kennedy Center Honors are given a medallion on a rainbow ribbon, a nod to the range of skills that fall under the performing arts. In April, the center changed the lights on the exterior from the long-standing rainbow to a permanent red, white and blue display. ___Italie reported from New York. Parents and child killed when tree falls on car as heavy rain and flooding hit Tennessee
A truck drives through flooded road in Chattanooga, Tenn., Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2025. (WTVC via AP)2025-08-13T13:30:23Z CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) A mother, father and child were killed when a tree fell on their car during heavy rain and flooding in Tennessee, an official said Wednesday. The three were killed when saturated ground caused a large tree to fall in the Chattanooga suburb of East Ridge just after midnight, Hamilton County Office of Emergency Management spokesperson Amy Maxwell said by telephone. The full extent of the damage isnt yet known, Maxwell said. County officials will tour the damage in the East Ridge area on Wednesday morning, she said. The flooding prompted rescues of people stuck in homes and swamped vehicles on Tuesday, and the region was bracing for more rainfall and flooding Wednesday. Hamilton County Mayor Weston Wamp declared a local state of emergency Tuesday night as first responders responded to flash flooding and urged people to exercise extreme caution. The National Weather Service issued a flood watch for much of middle Tennessee through Wednesday night, warning of scattered flash flooding with tropical-like heavy rainfall and the possibility of training storms, especially over already saturated areas. Chattanooga Fire crews rescued motorists trapped in vehicles and residents stuck in their homes, fire department officials said. Flooding closed parts of Interstate 24 in the area, but it reopened once floodwaters receded. Stay up to date with the latest U.S. news by signing up to our WhatsApp channel. Swiftwater rescue teams rescued residents of three East Ridge homes trapped by rising floodwaters, according to the Hamilton County Sheriffs Office. Sheriff Austin Garrett said the flooding was more extensive than he had seen before, noting that it is usually concentrated in one area, The Chattanooga Times Free Press reported. This is extremely widespread. It made it difficult for us to even get here ourselves to try to help other people, he said. So no, Ive never seen it to this extent, this widespread in so many areas and impacting travel the way it is.

Wyoming and South Dakota Age Verification Laws Could Include Huge Parts of the Internet
Last month, age verification laws went into effect in Wyoming and South Dakota, requiring sites hosting material that is harmful to minors to verify visitors are over 18 years old. These would normally just be two more states joining the nearly 30 that have so far ceded ground to a years-long campaign for enforcing invasive, ineffective methods of keeping kids away from porn online. But these two states laws leave out an important condition: Unlike the laws passed in other states, they dont state that this applies only to sites with 33.3 percent or one-third harmful material. That could mean Wyoming and South Dakota would require a huge number of sites to use age verification because they host any material they deem harmful to minors, not just porn sites.Louisiana became the first state to pass an age verification law in the US in January 2023, and since then, most states have either copied or modeled their laws on Louisianasincluding in Arizona, Missouri, and Ohio, where these laws will be enacted within the coming weeks. And most have included the one-third clause, which would theoretically limit the age verification burden to adult sites. But dropping that provision, as Wyoming and South Dakota have done, opens a huge swath of sites to the burden of verifying the ages of visitors in those states.Louisianas law states:Any commercial entity that knowingly and intentionally publishes or distributes material harmful to minors on the internet from a website that contains a substantial portion of such material shall be held liable if the entity fails to perform reasonable age verification methods to verify the age of individuals attempting to access the material.A substantial portion is 33.3 percent or more material on a site thats harmful to minors, the law says. The same organizations that have lobbied for age verification laws that apply to porn sites have also spent years targeting social media platforms like Reddit and X, as well as streaming services like Netflix, for hosting adult content they deem sexploitation. While these sites and platforms do host adult content, age-gating the entire internet only pushes adult consumers and children alike into less-regulated, more exploitative spaces and situations, while everyone just uses VPNs to get around gates.Florida Sues Huge Porn Sites Including XVideos and Bang Bros Over Age Verification LawThe lawsuit alleges XVideos, Bang Bros, XNXX, Girls Gone Wild and TrafficFactory are in violation of Floridas law that requires adult platforms to verify visitors are over 18.404 MediaSamantha ColeAdult industry advocacy group the Free Speech Coalition issued an alert about Wyoming and South Dakotas dropping of the one-third or substantial requirement on Tuesday, writing that this could create civil and criminal liability for social media platforms such as X, Reddit and Discord, retailers such as Amazon and Barnes & Noble, streaming platforms such as Netflix and Rumble, and any other platform that simply allowed material these states consider harmful to minors but doesnt age-verify. Under these new laws, a platform with any amount of material harmful to minors, is required to verify the age of all visitors using the site. Operators of platforms that fail to do so may be subject to civil suits or even arrest, they wrote.Kansas Is About to Pass the Most Extreme Age Verification Law YetThe bill would make sites with more than 25 percent adult content liable to fines, and lumps homosexuality into sexual conduct.404 MediaSamantha ColeA version of what could be the future of the internet in the US is already playing out in the UK. Last month, the UK enacted the Online Safety Act, which forces platforms to verify the ages of everyone who tries to access certain kinds of content deemed harmful to children. So far, this has included (but isnt limited to) Discord, popular communities on Reddit, social media sites like Bluesky, and certain content on Spotify. On Monday, a judge dismissed a case brought by the Wikimedia Foundation that argued the over-broadness of the new UK rules would undermine the privacy and safety of Wikipedias volunteer contributors, expose the encyclopedia to manipulation and vandalism, and divert essential resources from protecting people and improving Wikipedia, one of the worlds most trusted and widely used digital public goods, Wikimedia Foundation wrote. For example, the Foundation would be required to verify the identity of many Wikipedia contributors, undermining the privacy that is central to keeping Wikipedia volunteers safe."As we're seeing in the UK with the Online Safety Act, laws designed to protect the children from harmful material online quickly metastasize and begin capturing nearly all users and all sites in surveillance and censorship schemes, Mike Stabile, director of public policy at the Free Speech Coalition, told me in an email following the alert. These laws give the government legal power to threaten platform owners into censoring or removing fairly innocuous content healthcare information, mainstream films, memes, political speech while decimating privacy protections for adults. Porn was only ever a Trojan horse for advancing these laws. Now, unfortunately, we're starting to see what we warned was inside all along."

Why are young cis men so vulnerable to right-wing influence? Trans men may hold the answer.
Raising boys today can be complicated, especially as many deem patriarchy and masculinity as the root of all societys problems.Trying to figure out who you are in a world that consistently says youre inherently problematic isnt easy, and more and more experts are trying to sound the alarm that young boys and men are in crisis. Related Trans mans culture shock after transitioning provides critical insight into male loneliness One group, it turns out, can provide vital insight into what these men are going through: transgender men who were raised as girls before transitioning. Having the rare experience of living life as each gender, trans men are offering a window into what young men lack (compared to women) when it comes to socialization.Journalist Holly Baxter explored this in a lengthy piece for The Independent, where she urged readers not to look away from these issues, even if it feels like men take up enough space as it is. Confronting it head-on, after all, may just be the ticket to toppling the patriarchy. Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Baxter first spoke with Aidan Key, a trans man who transitioned in the 90s before trans identities were widely discussed. He described the feelings testosterone gave him and said he couldnt believe teenage boys with underdeveloped brains had to handle this.As Aidan points out, he was going through the hormonal equivalent of male adolescence, Baxter said, but with the advantage of a fully-formed, adult brain. For the first time, he says, he felt a huge amount of compassion for teenage boys, because, you know, I found teenage boys quite ridiculously annoying my entire life. And I just felt so bad because I, as an adult I was in my early thirties I could have all of those feelings of physical overwhelm because of increased libido. But really, how does one contain it [when one still has the brain of a child]?' Key was shocked at just how much more energy and strength he had when the testosterone set in, and also at the different way he began to manage his emotions. He used to cry if he felt angry or frustrated, but on testosterone, he said, all of a sudden I realized: Im angry and Im going to speak about that, and Im gonna speak very clearly about that. And I found that the cognitive element of that was shifted in that way. He was also struggling to express sadness the way he used to, trying much harder to hold it in. So in some respects, I didnt pay attention and take care of the huge pain that was going on because I thought: Im doing OK. Im holding it together. The emotions were all there, he added. Like, grief feels like grief, anger feels like anger. But they just felt like there was a greater distance, like they were deeper inside rather than more on the surface of my body.Young boys, he learned, are at a biological disadvantage when it comes to managing emotions in a healthy way. Nevertheless, they are encouraged by society to continue holding them in.Baxter also spoke with Richard Reeves, president of the American Institute for Boys and Men and an advocate for building a more positive culture around masculinity. Progressives increasingly see men not as having problems [but] as being a problem, Reeves told Baxter. [Men are] just over it, Reeves said. Theyre not against gender equality. Theyre just kind of over the censoriousness and the lecturing.Reeves warned that this is one way men get radicalized. Frustrated by consistently being told they are misogynistic and evil for acknowledging that, like women, men have problems too, they become easy targets for right-wing influencers. He recognizes that young mens interest in the far right is a huge cultural problem. And he thinks we have to be honest about how to solve that, Baxter said. Baxter posed some essential questions: How do we engage boys in school again, tempt them away from [explicit content] and AI girlfriends and misogynistic YouTubers, navigate questions about feminism and the anti-woke backlash, protect them from seeing content pushed by firearms manufacturers on social media, and give them the space to actually enjoy their lives, all while nurturing the masculinity theyve been told is toxic? It seems one way to start is by listening to trans men. Trans writer Ben Greene said he was afraid to start taking testosterone because he didnt want it to turn him into a bad person. When he finally took the plunge, he realized it was more like turning up the volume on what was already there rather than fundamentally changing anything about who he was. He now counsels trans boys on the fact that testosterone cant change you into a bad guy, but influence from the patriarchy can. Both Greene and Key said they have also experienced a loss of social connection since transitioning. Key said people dont look him in the eye when they talk to him anymore, and Greene said folks more easily dismiss his emotions. He added that its harder to make close friends and it was difficult to get used to understanding that women now saw him as a potential threat. Baxter said that both men believe that a lot of raising successful young men involves being open to having the difficult conversations and involves approaching parenting boys as a positive, enriching experience, rather than an experience in avoiding worst-case scenarios. And, she concluded, it means not visiting the sins of the fathers on the sons who are new to these topics.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Disgusted God Puts Giant Overturned Glass AtopHumanity
THE HEAVENSMoments after spotting hordes of the minuscule creatures skittering across the face of the earth, the Lord, Our Holy Father, reportedly became disgusted Thursday and placed a giant overturned glass atop humanity.Heavenly sources confirmed the Almighty cursed in surprise when He first spotted the massive swarm of human beings crawling through Creation, but He soon scrambled to overturn a 70-million-foot-tall drinking vessel and contain the planets infestation, trapping the enormous mass of 8.1 billion squirming pests inside.Gross, gross, gross, theyre getting all over the place! said the visibly nauseated deity, who after a short search around His Kingdom retrieved a 10,000-mile-wide paper plate He could slide beneath the glass to ensure the scamperingthrongs didnt escape. Ugh, I hate the twitchy way they move. And the tiny hairs all over their bodies. Plus, theyre always kind of moist. Totally creeps me out.Seriously, I might puke just looking at them, the Lord continued.According to witnesses, God discovered the human colony late at night after turning over a cloud in heavens sanctum sanctorum to find billions of the creatures writhing on the planet below. Several reports confirmed that after trapping humanity, the Almighty Creator exhibited a wide range of coping responses that included wincing in stunned silence as He gazed at the humans from afar, audibly gagging at the sight of saliva dripping from their jaws, and even shouting Get out! get out! at the tiny noncomprehending beings for over a minute.Though he momentarily regained His composure by taking some deep breaths, the Lord is said to have fallen into a fit of dry-heaving after He spotted several humans in Central Europe expelling bodily fluids as they copulated. After recovering once more, He was seen rolling up an ancient scroll and approaching the glass with the papyrus brandished in His Divine Hand.If I let them out theyll infest all of Creationthey breed like crazy, said He Who Divided the Heavens and Earth, tapping on the side of the glass as several million inhabitants of the North American continent scurried helplessly away inside the cup. I used to think the ethical thing was to release them, but they always seem to find their way back to me. Then they get into my shit and start eating through everything in sight. Plus, they stink up the place. Official records confirmed this is far from the first time the Eternal One has struggled with a human incursion. Once, as a younger deity, the Lord reportedly placed a pair in His garden, gave them fruits and herbs, and even named them, only to grow bored after several months. When He remembered them several years later, Our Heavenly Father was frustrated to discover an out-of-control population scuttling all over the globe.Since then, God is believed to have grown far more impatient with humanitys tendency to decimate forests, contaminate food supplies, and spread disease. A small number is enough to send Him stomping on the fleeing beings, and sources said on one occasion He leapt onto His Heavenly Throne and refused to get down until the Holy Ghost exterminated them. You can smite a few of these fuckers, but there will always be more on their way, said the Almighty, grimacing as the appearance of His Eternal Face outside the glass sent huge quantities of the miniscule beings scattering for cover in South America. You can set them on fire, crush them, even throw them out into spacethey always bounce back and start breeding like nothing happened. Maybe Ill just put a bunch of water in there and see if they drown.Although, thats never worked before, the Creator of All Things added. At press time, God was seen spraying a massive bottle of Axe Body Spray over the entirety of Creation in a final attempt to wipe out the human infestation once and for all.The post Disgusted God Puts Giant Overturned Glass AtopHumanity appeared first on The Onion.

When Williams came back to the tour last month at the DC Open for her first match anywhere in 16 months, a reporter asked whether that would be a one-time thing or if there were plans for other tournaments. Im just here for now, and who knows? she replied then. Maybe theres more. ... But at the moment, Im focused just on this. I havent played in a year. There is no doubt I can play tennis, but obviously coming back to play matches, it takes time to get in the swing of things. I definitely feel Ill play well. Im still the same player. Im a big hitter. I hit big. This is my brand. Last year, Williams had surgery to remove uterine fibroids and missed most of the season. In Washington this July, she competed for the first time since March 2024 at the Miami Open and became the oldest woman to win a tour-level singles match since Martina Navratilova was 47 at Wimbledon in 2004; Williams also won a doubles match at the DC Open. In the process, Williams drew a ton of attention for her tennis, yes, but also for letting the world know shes engaged to an Italian actor and for her half-joking comments about needing to get back on court to get covered by health insurance.I love Venus. Were friends. I didnt really know this was something she was still wanting to do. But I also didnt know it was something she didnt want to do, said Mark Ein, the chairman of the hard-court tournament in Washington. I was surprised. And it was a wonderful surprise.Williams also entered the Cincinnati Open via a wild card last week, exiting in the first round of singles. In New York, she will play in the Aug. 19-20 mixed doubles tournament with Reilly Opelka, a 27-year-old American who used to be ranked in the top 20.Other women getting singles wild cards for the U.S. Open are Americans Clervie Ngounoue, Julieta Pareja, Caty McNally, Valerie Glozman and Alyssa Ahn, plus Frances Caroline Garcia wholl be playing in her last Grand Slam tournament before retirement and Australias Talia Gibson. Mens wild cards went to Americans Brandon Holt, Nishesh Basavareddy, Tristan Boyer, Emilio Nava, Stefan Dostanic and Darwin Blanch, and Frances Valentin Royer and Australias Tristan Schoolkate.___Howard Fendrich has been the APs tennis writer since 2002. How to get kids back on a sleep schedule for the school year
Students make their way to classes on the first day of school in Land O' Lakes, Fla., Thursday, Aug. 10, 2023. (Chris Urso/Tampa Bay Times via AP, File)2025-08-13T13:10:41Z NEW YORK (AP) After a summer of vacations and late nights, its time to set those back-to-school alarms.A good nights sleep helps students stay focused and attentive in class. Experts say its worth easing kids back into a routine with the start of a new school year.We dont say get good sleep just because, said pediatrician Dr. Gabrina Dixon with Childrens National Hospital. It really helps kids learn and it helps them function throughout the day.The amount of sleep kids need changes as they age. Preschoolers should get up to 13 hours of sleep. Tweens need between nine and 12 hours. Teenagers do best with eight to 10 hours of shut-eye. Set an earlier bedtimeEarly bedtimes can slip through the cracks over the summer as kids stay up for sleepovers, movie marathons and long plane flights. To get back on track, experts recommend setting earlier bedtimes a week or two before the first day of school or gradually going to bed 15 to 30 minutes earlier each night. Dont eat a heavy meal before bed and avoid TV or screen time two hours before sleep. Instead, work in relaxing activities to slow down like showering and reading a story.Youre trying to take the cognitive load off your mind, said Dr. Nitun Verma, a spokesperson for the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. It would be like if youre driving, youre slowly letting go of the gas pedal. This article is part of APs Be Well coverage, focusing on wellness, fitness, diet and mental health. Read more Be Well. Parents can adjust their back-to-school plans based on what works best for their child. Nikkya Hargrove moves her twin daughters bedtimes up by 30 minutes the week before school starts. Sometimes, her 10-year-olds will negotiate for a few extra minutes to stay up and read. Hargrove said those conversations are important as her children get older and advocate for themselves. If they stay up too late and dont have the best morning, Hargrove said that can be a learning experience too.If theyre groggy and they dont like how they feel, then they know, OK, I have to go to bed earlier, said Hargrove, an author and independent bookstore owner from Connecticut. In the morning, soaking in some daylight by sitting at a window or going outside can help train the brain to power up, Verma said. Squash back-to-school sleep anxietySleep quality matters just as much as duration. First-day jitters can make it hard to fall asleep no matter how early the bedtime. Dixon says parents can talk to their kids to find out what is making them anxious. Is it the first day at a new school? Is it a fear of making new friends? Then they might try a test run of stressful activities before school starts to make those tasks feel less scary for example, by visiting the school or meeting classmates at an open house. The weeks leading up can be jam-packed and its not always possible to prep a routine in advance. But kids will adjust eventually so sleep experts say parents should do what they can. After all, their kids arent the only ones adjusting to a new routine.I always say, Take a deep breath, itll be OK, Dixon said. And just start that schedule.___The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institutes Department of Science Education and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. From lesbian modernist icons like Gertrude Stein to modern gay male poets like Ocean Vuong, this list covers the literary icons you absolutely need on your shelf.Looking to expand your LGBT reading repertoire? Take a look at some of our favorite gay poets in history.Related: Gay is the word: A history of LGBTQ bookstores around the worldSappho (630-570 BCE)This wouldnt be a list of gay poets without Sappho of Lesbos, from whose name we get the words sapphic and lesbian. Perhaps the most prominent female poet in antiquity, Sappho is the only woman in the canon of Lyric Poets from the Hellenic era. Nicknamed The Poetess and the Tenth Muse, Sappho set the standard for lyric poetry, exploring themes of desire, love, and longing. But shes best known today for her lesbian poems which celebrate erotic love.Must-read:One GirlView this post on InstagramA post shared by Sappho Poetry (@sappho_poems)Walt Whitman (1819-1892)Walt Whitman is also referred to as the father of free verse poetry. One of the most popular American gay male poets, Whitmans lifestyle inspired founding members of the Beat Movement like Ginsberg and Kerouac. His poetry explores themes like democracy, American patriotism, and sexuality the latter earned him a notorious reputation in his time. Whitmans poetry collection,Leaves of Grass, received mixed critical reception because it portrayed gay love unsurprisingly frowned upon in his time. Today, it stands as one of the most important collections of American poetry.Must-read:song of myself, i sing the body electricEmily Dickinson (1830-1886)Its believed that Emily Dickinson was romantically involved with Susan Gilbert, her childhood friend and later sister-in-law. The two women lived next door to each other, and their relationship is chronicled in their lengthy correspondence. In the hundreds of letters between them, Dickinson is found to address Gilbert with much intimacy and passion.Emily Dickinson wrote around 1,800 poems in her lifetime. The majority of Dickinsons poetry was published posthumously. Academics speculate that Susan Gilbert was, quite literally, erased from the narrative by Dickinsons publisher, Mabel Loomis Todd.Must-read:letters, now i knew i lost herView this post on InstagramA post shared by Emily Dickinson (@poet_emily_dickinson)Oscar Wilde (1854-1900)If were talking famous gay poets, we cant exclude the great Oscar Wilde. He was an Irish poet, playwright, and spokesman for the Aesthetic movement of the late 1800s. He gained notoriety for his only novel,The Picture of Dorian Gray. The novel was heavily criticized for its depiction of homoeroticism, which was illegal at the time. The final decade of his life paints a picture of tragedy and hardship not uncommon for members of the LGBT in his time. Oscar Wilde was put through three criminal trials. Details of his affair with Lord Alfred Douglas were made public and the trials of Oscar Wilde became one of the first-ever celebrity trials. Wilde was eventually imprisoned from 1895-1897. He spent the last years of his life in exile in France.Gertrude Stein (1874-1946)Gertrude Stein is known for her playful, repetitive writing style. Scholars argue that her bookTender Buttonsis a collection of veiled lesbian poems dedicated to her life partner Alice B. Toklas.Stein and Toklas are also known for their time together in Paris. Their home, the Stein Salon, became a renowned gathering place for modernist writers and artists including Hemingway, Picasso, the Fitzgeralds, Rousseau, and more. If you want a good read on gay love, you need to addThe Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas, a book Stein wrote in Toklass voice detailing their life in Paris.Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997)You can count Allen Ginsberg as one of the most famous gay poets of our time. Ginsberg was a core member of the Beat Movement, a group of writers renowned for their exploration of the human condition, demystification of psychedelics, and expression of sexual liberation.Hes best known for his poem Howl, which became the subject of an obscenity trial in 1957. It was censored and banned because of its graphic and unapologetic reference to Ginsbergs homosexuality. Ginsberg today is one of the earliest advocates for gay rights. He challenged the norm by writing openly and explicitly about his sexuality.[media-credit name=Shutterstock align=center width=1140][/media-credit]Frank OHara (1926-1966)Frank OHara was an art critic, intellectual, poet, and prominent figure in the New York art world. Hes considered to be one of the first openly gay male poets. After all, he literally wrote a gay poem entitled Homosexuality. A leader of the New York School of poets, OHara is known for his modernist poetry. His writing is mostly autobiographical, capturing the essence of New York in the 50s.OHara lived across New York in a series of apartments, often with his on-and-off partner Joe LeSueur.Must-read: la recherche d Gertrude SteinAudre Lorde (1934-1992)A feminist gay icon in her own right, Audre Lorde is the embodiment of the saying the personal is political. Alligator Alcatraz migrant jail could halt construction over environmental concerns
Work progresses on the Dade-Collier Training and Transition facility in the Florida Everglades, July 4, 2025, in Ochopee, Fla. (AP Photo/Rebecca Blackwell, file)2025-08-13T04:05:09Z MIAMI (AP) Construction of a makeshift immigrant detention center in the Florida Everglades dubbed Alligator Alcatraz could be halted indefinitely as a federal judge considered Wednesday whether the hasty development on sensitive wetlands violates environmental laws.Last week, U.S. District Judge Kathleen Williams ordered a two-week halt on additional construction at the site while witnesses continued to testify in the case. The first phase of Alligator Alcatraz opened in July and less than 1,000 detainees were being held there as of last week. The temporary order doesnt include any restrictions on law enforcement or immigration enforcement activity at the center, which was quickly built two months ago at a lightly used, single-runway training airport. Its designed to eventually hold up to 3,000 detainees in temporary tent structures. President Donald Trump toured the detention center last month and suggested it could be a model for future lockups nationwide as his administration races to expand the infrastructure necessary for increasing deportations.Attorneys and people held there say worms turn up in the food, toilets dont flush and flood floors with fecal waste, while mosquitoes and other insects are everywhere. Inside the compounds large white tents, rows of bunkbeds are surrounded by chain-link cages. Detainees are said to go days without showering or getting prescription medicine, and they are only able to speak by phone to lawyers and loved ones. At times the air conditioners abruptly shut off in the sweltering heat. Stay up to date with the latest U.S. news by signing up to our WhatsApp channel. Who runs Alligator Alcatraz, Washington or Florida? The order temporarily barred the installation of any new industrial-style lighting, as well as any paving, filling, excavating, fencing or erecting additional buildings, tents, dormitories or other residential or administrative facilities. The judge is considering whether additional construction should be stopped for good.Environmental groups and the Miccosukee Tribe want the judge to issue a preliminary injunction to halt operations and further construction, which they say threatens environmentally sensitive wetlands that are home to protected plants and animals and would reverse billions of dollars worth of environmental restoration. Plaintiffs presented witnesses Wednesday and Thursday who testified that the facility violates the National Environmental Policy Act, which requires federal agencies to assess the environmental effects of major construction projects. Attorneys for the state and federal government have said that although the detention center would be holding federal detainees, the construction and operation of the facility is entirely under the state of Florida, meaning the federal environmental review wouldnt apply. The judge last week said the detention facility was, at a minimum, a joint partnership between the state and federal government. Witnesses describe environmental threatsWitnesses for the environmental groups have testified that at least 20 acres (8 hectares) of asphalt have been added to the site since the Florida Division of Emergency Management began construction. They said additional paving could lead to an increase in water runoff to the adjacent wetlands, spread harmful chemicals into the Everglades and reduce the habitat for endangered Florida panthers. Amy Castaneda, the Miccosukee Tribes water resource director, testified Tuesday that nutrient runoff from the detention center could flow into tribal lands, changing vegetation growth. That could lead to fish kills and block humans and wildlife from moving throughout certain areas, she said.Marcel Bozas, director of the Miccosukee Tribes fish and wildlife department, said tribe members hunt and fish for subsistence and cultural reasons. Sustained human activity can drive away game animals, like whitetail deer, as well as protected species, like Florida panthers, wood storks, eastern black rails and bonneted bats, he said. State official says Florida runs centerDepartment of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles executive director David Kerner testified that the 1,800 state troopers under his command are authorized to detain undocumented migrants under an agreement with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. He said the federal government doesnt tell the state where to detain immigrants, and that the Everglades facility was built to alleviate overcrowding at federal immigration detention facilities, as well as state and county facilities with agreements to hold federal immigration detainees.Kerner couldnt say how many of the Alligator Alcatraz detainees have been charged with violent crimes or whether any other sites besides the middle of the Everglades were considered for possible detention centers.Attorneys for federal and state agencies last month asked Williams to dismiss or transfer the injunction request, saying the lawsuit was filed in the wrong jurisdiction. Even though the property is owned by Miami-Dade County, Floridas southern district is the wrong venue for the lawsuit because the detention center is in neighboring Collier County, which is in the states middle district, they said.Williams had yet to rule on that argument. Facility faces a second legal challengeIn a second legal challenge to Alligator Alcatraz, a federal judge over the weekend gave the state more time to prepare arguments against an effort to get the civil rights litigation certified as a class action. U.S. District Judge Rodolfo Ruiz in Miami said he will only consider a motion by detainees lawyers for a preliminary injunction during an Aug. 18 hearing. He set a Sept. 23 deadline for the state to respond to the detainees class action request. The second lawsuit claims detainees constitutional rights are being violated because they are barred from meeting lawyers, are being held without any charges, and a federal immigration court has canceled bond hearings. The lawsuits were being heard as DeSantis administration apparently was preparing to build a second immigration detention center at a Florida National Guard training center in north Florida. At least one contract has been awarded for what is labeled in state records as the North Detention Facility.

ICE Propaganda Video That Used Jay-Z Song Hit With Copyright Takedown
A Department of Homeland Security (DHS) propaganda video that featured Jay-Zs music was hit with a copyright takedown request on X, and appears to have been hit with copyright violations on both Instagram and Facebook as well. The video features footage of Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents training and doing immigration raids set to Jay-Zs 2003 song Public Service Announcement, which has recently been used in at least two DHS videos. DHS tweeted the video alongside the caption Hunt Cartels. Save America. JOIN.ICE.GOV. The original tweet, from August 10, has 2.9 million views on X; the video has been replaced with the message This media has been disabled in response to a report by the copyright owner.DHS also posted the video on Instagram and Facebook. On both platforms, the video has stayed up but Jay-Zs music has been removed, suggesting that it got hit with a copyright notice on those platforms too. On Instagram, where it has nearly a million views, a message that says This audio is no longer available plays if you try to unmute the video. The sound on the video has been removed on Facebook as well, but a quirk of the platform allowed me to check what the removed audio was by clicking the name of the sound in the bottom left corner of the Reel, which showed it was indeed Jay-Zs Public Service Announcement. A Facebook user ripped and reposted the video, which still has the sound, and can be found here at the time of publication.Neither Meta nor X responded to a request for comment. The Recording Industry Association of America, which files a huge number of copyright takedown requests across the internet for major artists, declined to comment to 404 Media. DHS also did not respond to a request for comment. Jay-Zs Roc Nation also did not respond to a request for comment. In recent weeks, DHS officials and agents have heavily ratcheted up the number of videos they post to social media. Many of the videos are heavily edited sizzle reels from immigration raids set to rap music or songs like the Bad Boys theme and Johnny Cashs Gods Gonna Cut You Down. The footage is being used to recruit new ICE agents and to promote the cruelty of Trumps immigration raids; a video posted by chief border patrol agent Gregory Bovino features Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass warning about the overreach of the federal government in LA and includes a remixed version of Public Service Announcement over first-person footage of Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents doing an immigration raid Thursday at a Home Depot in Los Angeles. That particular raid may have violated a court injunction, experts have argued. The Call of Duty aesthetic is sickening, Chris Gilliard, co-director of The Critical Internet Studies Institute and author of the forthcoming book Luxury Surveillance, told 404 Media.404 Media reported last week that CBP agents have been wearing Metas AI camera glasses to at least two recent immigration raids in Los Angeles (it is unclear what cameras were used to film the footage used in either of the videos featuring Jay-Z music).CBP utilize Go Pros mounted to helmets or body armor at times, as well as traditional DSLR handheld cameras, a CBP spokesperson told 404 Media when we asked about its agents wearing Meta AI glasses. The spokesperson added CBP does not have an arrangement with Meta. The use of personal recording devices is not authorized. However, Border Patrol agents may wear personally purchased sunglasses.DHS has also allowed Fox News reporters to embed with and film agents on raids, and footage from these raids shows DHS agents with DSLR cameras running alongside each other to capture footage. It is clearly important to this administration to capture and widely publicize this footage, which often emphasizes agents grabbing people who are running away from them. The copyright takedown is notable because it shows DHS is not getting permission from artists to use their music in these propaganda videos, which are being used to recruit ICE agents in the immediate aftermath of a huge funding increase. As we reported earlier this month, ICE is trying to do a social media advertising blitz with part of this new funding, and is looking to plaster ads on social media, TV, and streaming sites. Despite this cash injection, early reports suggest that ICE is having trouble finding people to work for it.

I found myself as a trans man when I embraced the flamboyance of camp and glitter
I watch Drag Race. I wear floral prints. My husband and I have been married for a decade. I am, by most measures, a fairly typical effeminate gay man.Though I happen to be trans. Related Masculinity is crippling society. Could trans men be the key to changing that? Sometimes that lands like a plot twist. But the truth is that just as cis gay men can be any combination of masculine bear or feminine twink or anywhere else on the gender expression spectrum, so can trans gay men. Figuring that out is how I realized that Im trans. Some trans people know they are trans from a young age. They can see it clearly that they are truly a boy or a girl or neither, despite what everyone around them says. Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today But that wasnt me. I didnt have those words. But I knew something was off, even as a kid. I was deeply unhappy, but I couldnt explain it. It felt like there was a fog between myself and other people. A barrier. No matter what I did, I couldnt figure out why.I felt most comfortable with queer people and flourished hanging out in LGBTQ+ spaces, gravitating towards the glimmers of representation I saw in Rent and the original Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. I somehow felt like a part of queer culture, especially gay male culture, despite being outwardly a woman who largely dated men. I went to college and was lucky to take classes from openly queer professors and read works by and about LGBTQ+ people. I also made a variety of friends across the gender and sexual orientation spectrums. And then it clicked. I was a gay trans man. Thats why I never felt comfortable in my own skin. Being a woman was simply not my authentic self. I was a man, and since I was attracted to men, I was a gay man.It seems obvious now. So why did it take me so long to figure it out? One big reason is that I didnt fit into the archetype of masculinity. Masculine men like sports. I love celebrity gossip. They wear boring, plain clothes. I wear bright colors and loud patterns. They are stoic and tough. I laugh loudly and smile easily. But tons of other men gay, straight, and in between dont have those hobbies, dress that way, or act like that.I didnt realize I was a man because I my understanding of being a man was limited to straight machismo. When I considered other versions of who a man can be, specifically the flamboyant version, it unlocked my authentic self.As soon as I transitioned, the fog lifted. I felt comfortable and free, able to connect with others and dream about the future with confidence and optimism.I came out in 2007, and today, my life is rich and full.I work in trans activism, trying to make things better for trans people who come after me, especially the lonely ones who dont have community. I found the love of my life. We met at Pride when I was working a table for a grassroots organization by and for trans people of color. It was the first Pride he had ever attended, and he hasnt been to one since. We joke he has a perfect success rate at Pride, and we just celebrated 13 years together.I have friendship, support, and comfort. Its a lot to be grateful for, and it never would have happened if I hadnt had the chance to understand myself with the aid of representation.Unfortunately, anti-trans extremists misconstrue these experiences. They point to people like me who came out after being exposed to queer people and media as proof that we arent really trans or gay. They claim its social pressure or that were easily influenced. The truth is, my authentic gender and sexuality cant change. The only things that can are whether or not Im out and whether or not Im happy. If I hadnt transitioned, I would have still been isolated, lonely, and depressed. I would not have been able to explain it to others, and Im not sure where I could have turned for help.Transitioning, on the other hand, has brightened my life, allowing me to finally exhale after a youth spent holding my breath. My hope is to pass this freedom on to others. We should all have the chance to live full, authentic lives, experiencing the joy of being untethered from the idea of who you think you are supposed to be.I found myself as a trans man when I let go of traditional standards of masculinity and embraced the flamboyance of camp and glitter. Wherever your truth is, I hope you find it too. A liberated life is waiting for you.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.
