APNEWS.COMSix planets are hanging out in early morning skies this month. Heres how to spot themA girl looks through a telescope in Caracas, Venezuela, on Sunday, May 15, 2022. (AP Photo/Matias Delacroix, File)2025-08-14T13:12:52Z NEW YORK (AP) Six planets are hanging out in the sky this month in whats known as a planetary parade. Catch the spectacle while you can because its the last one of the year. These linkups happen when several planets appear to line up in the night sky at once. Such parades are fairly common, happening around every year depending on the number of planets. At least one bright planet can be spotted on most nights, weather permitting, according to NASA.Six planets were visible in January skies and every planet of our solar system was visible in February, but not all could be spotted with the naked eye.Venus, Jupiter, Saturn and a faint Mercury are visible this month without any special equipment, and the best chances to spot them are over the next week. Uranus and Neptune can only be glimpsed through binoculars and telescopes.Jupiter and Venus made a close brush earlier this week and are still near each other in the eastern sky, close together like cats eyes, said Carolyn Sumners at the Houston Museum of Natural Science. Mercury will be at its farthest point from the sun on Tuesday morning, making it easier to spot before it disappears into the suns glare. To catch the planets, go out in the morning shortly before sunrise and look east. Try to find Jupiter and Venus clustered together first. Saturn is off to the side and Mercury will be close to the horizon, trying to rise before the sun. Youre looking for little tiny pinpoints of light, but they are the brightest ones, said Justin Bartel with the Science Museum of Virginia. They dont really twinkle like the stars do.Before heading out, make sure it is a clear, cloudless morning and try to get away from tall buildings that could block the view. Mercury will hide behind the sun again toward the end of the month, but a crescent moon will then join the parade. The next big planetary hangout is in February.___The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institutes Department of Science Education and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. APNEWS.COMWhat to know about the Putin-Trump summit in AlaskaU.S. President Donald Trump meets with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the G-20 Summit on July 7, 2017, in Hamburg, Germany. (AP Photo/Evan Vucci, File)2025-08-11T18:06:08Z The U.S.-Russia summit in Alaska is happening where East meets West quite literally in a place familiar to both countries as a Cold War front line of missile defense, radar outposts and intelligence gathering.Whether it can lead to a deal to produce peace in Ukraine more than 3 1/2 years after Moscows invasion remains to be seen.Heres what to know about the meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump, the first summit in four years:When and where is it taking place? The summit takes place Friday at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson outside Anchorage starting about 11:30 a.m. (1930 GMT, 3:30 p.m. EDT), between Putin and Trump as well as a meeting of the delegations, said Yuri Ushakov, Putins foreign policy adviser. Its Putins first trip to the U.S. since 2015 for the U.N. General Assembly in New York. Because the U.S. isnt a member of the International Criminal Court, which in 2023 issued a warrant for Putin on war crimes accusations, its under no obligation to arrest him. Both countries confirmed a meeting between only Putin and Trump, despite initial suggestions that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy might take part. The Kremlin has long pushed back against Putin meeting Zelenskyy - at least until a peace deal is reached by both sides and is ready to be signed.Putin said last week he wasnt against meeting Zelenskyy but certain conditions need to be created and were still a long way off. That raised fears about excluding Ukraine from negotiations. Kyiv and its European allies stressed that peace cannot be achieved without Kyivs involvement. Zelenskyy was in Berlin for virtual meetings Wednesday with Trump and European leaders to try to ensure Ukraine and its allies are heard before the summit. The Ukrainian president told the group Putin is bluffing about his military might and the effectiveness of sanctions, and is trying to apply pressure ... on all sectors of the Ukrainian front to try to show that Russia is capable of occupying all of Ukraine. In reality, sanctions are hitting Russias war economy hard, Zelenskyy said.Zelenskyy also met with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer in London on Thursday. When it was found to contain vast resources, it was seen by Russians as a nave deal that generated remorse. After the USSRs collapse, Alaska was a subject of nostalgia and jokes for Russians. One popular song in the 1990s went: Dont play the fool, America give back our dear Alaska land. Sam Greene of Kings College London said on X the symbolism of Alaska as the site of a summit about Ukraine was horrendous as though designed to demonstrate that borders can change, land can be bought and sold. Trump has appeared increasingly exasperated with Putin over Russias refusal to halt the bombardment of Ukraine. Kyiv has agreed to a ceasefire, insisting on a truce as a first step toward peace.Moscow presented ceasefire conditions that are nonstarters for Zelenskyy, such as withdrawing troops from the four regions Russia illegally annexed in 2022, halting mobilization efforts, or freezing Western arms deliveries. For a broader peace, Putin demands Kyiv cede the annexed regions, even though Russia doesnt fully control them, and Crimea, renounce a bid to join NATO, limit the size of its armed forces and recognize Russian as an official language along with Ukrainian. Zelenskyy insists any peace deals include robust security guarantees to protect Ukraine from future Russian aggression.Putin has warned Ukraine it will face tougher conditions for peace as Russian troops forge into other regions to build what he described as a buffer zone. Some observers suggested Russia could trade those recent gains for territory under Ukrainian control in the four annexed regions annexed by Moscow. Zelenskyy said Saturday that Ukrainians will not give their land to the occupier. But Trump said Monday: Therell be some land swapping going on. I know that through Russia and through conversations with everybody. To the good, for the good of Ukraine. Good stuff, not bad stuff. Also, some bad stuff for both. (Mikhail Sinitsyn, Sputnik, Kremlin Pool Photo via AP) Share Share Facebook Copy Link copied Print Email X LinkedIn Bluesky Flipboard Pinterest Reddit Read More Zelenskyy said Tuesday that Putin wants Ukraine to withdraw from the remaining 30% of the Donetsk region it still controls as part of a ceasefire deal, a proposal the Ukrainian categorically rejected. Kyiv wont give up territory it controls, he added, saying that would be unconstitutional and would serve only as a springboard for a future Russian invasion. He said discussions led by the U.S. on ending the war have not addressed key Ukrainian demands, including security guarantees to prevent future Russian aggression and including Europe in negotiations.French President Emmanuel Macron said Wednesday that Trump was very clear in a virtual meeting with European leaders and Zelenskyy that the U.S. wants to achieve a ceasefire. Macron added that Trump had been clear that territorial issues relating to Ukraine ... will only be negotiated by the Ukrainian president. What are expectations? Trump said Wednesday there will be unspecified very severe consequences if Putin does not agree to stop the war after the summit. Putin sees a meeting with Trump as a chance to cement Russias territorial gains, keep Ukraine out of NATO and prevent it from hosting any Western troops so Moscow can gradually pull the country back into its orbit. He believes time is on his side as Ukrainian forces are struggling to stem Russian advances along the front amid swarms of Moscows missiles and drones. The meeting is a diplomatic coup for Putin, isolated since the invasion. The Kremlin sought to portray renewed U.S. contacts as two superpowers looking to resolve various global problems, with Ukraine being just one. Ukraine and its European allies are concerned a summit without Kyiv could allow Putin to get Trump on his side and force Ukraine into concessions. Any decisions that are without Ukraine are at the same time decisions against peace, Zelenskyy said. They will not bring anything. These are dead decisions. They will never work.European officials echoed that.As we work towards a sustainable and just peace, international law is clear: All temporarily occupied territories belong to Ukraine, European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said. A sustainable peace also means that aggression cannot be rewarded.NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte said Sunday he believed Trump was making sure that Putin is serious, and if he is not, then it will stop there. If he is serious, then from Friday onwards, the process will continue. Ukraine getting involved, the Europeans being involved, Rutte added.Since last week, Putin spoke to Chinese leader Xi Jinping, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Brazilian President Luiz Incio Lula da Silva and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, as well as the leaders of South Africa, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Belarus and Kyrgyzstan, the Kremlin said. That suggested Putin perhaps wanted to brief Russias most important allies about a potential settlement, said pro-Kremlin analyst Sergei Markov. Putin also met with top government officials on the eve of the summit.-Associated Press writers Lorne Cook in Brussels, Michelle L. (AP Photo)2025-08-14T09:51:17Z SRINAGAR, India (AP) At least 32 people are dead in flash floods caused by torrential rains in a remote, mountainous village in Indian-controlled Kashmir, a top disaster management official said Thursday, as rescue teams scouring the devastated Himalayan village brought at least 100 people to safety.Mohammed Irshad said rescue teams scouring the devastated Himalayan village of Chositi brought at least 100 people to safety. He said initial estimations suggested at least 50 others were still missing.Indias deputy minister for science and technology, Jitendra Singh, said the floods were triggered by a cloudburst in Jammu and Kashmirs Chositi area and could result in substantial casualty. Some of the rescued people were badly injured and were being treated in local hospitals, said Susheel Kumar Sharma, a local official.Chositi is a remote Himalayan village in Kashmirs Kishtwar district and is the last village accessible to motor vehicles on the route of an annual Hindu pilgrimage to a mountainous shrine. Multiple pilgrims were also feared to be affected by the disaster. Officials said pilgrimage has been suspended and more rescue teams were on the way to the area. The devastating floods swept away the main community kitchen set up for the pilgrims as well as dozens of vehicles and motorbikes, officials said Lt. Gov. Manoj Sinha, New Delhis top administrator in Kashmir, offered condolences for the loss of life and said he had directed personnel from Indias military and paramilitary forces, as well as police and disaster management officials, to strengthen rescue and relief operations. Sudden, intense downpours over small areas known as cloudbursts are increasingly common in Indias Himalayan regions, which are prone to flash floods and landslides. Cloudbursts have the potential to wreak havoc by causing intense flooding and landslides, impacting thousands of people in the mountainous regions.Experts say cloudbursts have increased in recent years partly due to climate change, while damage from the storms also has increased because of unplanned development in mountain regions.0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 0 Views 0 Προεπισκόπηση

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMWhats with the Harrison Butker conversion therapy rumors?Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker has helped his team win three Super Bowlssince joining them in 2017. He holds the record for kicking the longest-ever field goal in a Super Bowl (57 yards) and for scoring the most field goals in a Super Bowl (nine). However, Harrison Butker has also become infamous for making anti-LGBTQ+ comments during a graduation speech and was rumored to have previously slept with men and undergone so-called ex-gay conversion therapy. Related Heres what scientific studies on conversion therapy say Are any of these rumors true? Did Harrison Butker really undergo conversion therapy? Did he really hook up with a Georgia Tech male cheerleader? Lets take a closer look at the claims below.Did Harrison Butker mention conversion therapy in his Benedictine College graduation speech? Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today No. Harrison Butker didnt mention conversion therapy in his May 11, 2024, commencement address atBenedictine Collegein Atchison, Kansas (a school that once forced its out gay basketball playerJallen Messersmith to remove a Pride flag hung in his dorm room window). However, Butker did use the speech to praise traditional gender roles and make anti-LGBTQ+ comments. In his speech, Butker said that degenerate cultural values have negatively impacted everyone. He encouraged the schools Catholic students to speak the truth amid a society that tries to silence them. He then insinuated that Catholic government leaders, like then-President Joe Biden, of pushing dangerous gender ideologies onto the youth of America. Butker also mentioned the deadly sin sort of pride that has an entire month dedicated to it. Additionally, Butker said that women have been fed diabolical lies about placing their careers over the fulfillment of marrying a man and becoming a homemaker (like his wife). He also encouraged men to fight against the cultural emasculation of men.Following widespread criticism, Butker stood by his words, saying, If it wasnt clear that the timeless Catholic values are hated by many, it is now. As to be expected, the more Ive talked about what I value most, which is my Catholic faith, the more polarizing Ive become. Its a decision Ive consciously made and one I do not regret at all. How did the LGBTQ+ community respond to Harrison Butkers graduation speech?Critics called the speech misogynistic and queerphobic. In a statement, Sarah Kate Ellis, president and CEO of the LGBTQ+ media watchdog group GLAAD, said, Kansas City Chiefs player Harrison Butkers commencement speech was not only a clear miss, it was inaccurate, ill-informed, and woefully out of step with Americans about Pride, LGBTQ people, and women. The organization also noted that gender ideologies is a term fabricated by anti-LGBTQ+ activists and noted that then-Pope Francis had taken more actions than any pope in history to support LGBTQ+ people, especially trans people, and to welcome them into the Catholic church. The LGBTQ+ sports website Outsports named Butker as its 2024 A**hole of the Year, calling the speech an awful, mean-spirited commentary that targeted the LGBTQ community with pettiness and disdain. How did the NFL respond to Harrison Butkers graduation speech? The Kansas City Chiefs head coach, Andy Reid, said, Were a microcosm of life. Everybody is from different areas, different religions, different races. And so, we all get along, we all respect each others opinions and not necessarily do we go by those, but we respect everybody to have a voice. [Thats the] great thing about America. my wish is that everybody could kind of follow that. The Chiefs chairman, Clark Hunt, said, One of the things I talk to the players every year about at training camp is using their platform to make a difference. We have players on both sides of the political spectrum, both sides of whatever controversial issue you want to bring up. Im not at all concerned when our players use their platform to make a difference, the Associated Press reported.Former Kansas City commissioner Justice Horn condemned the speech, writing via social media, Harrison Butker doesnt represent Kansas City nor has he ever. Kansas City has always been a place that welcomes, affirms, and embraces our LGBTQ+ community members. Harrison Butker doesnt represent Kansas City nor has he ever. Kansas City has always been a place that welcomes, affirms, and embraces our LGBTQ+ community members. pic.twitter.com/4vZ14SXgb6 Justice Horn (@JusticeHorn_) May 14, 2024 In a statement, Jonathan Beane, the NFLs senior vice president and chief diversity and inclusion officer, told People magazine, Harrison Butker gave a speech in his personal capacity. His views are not those of the NFL as an organization. The NFL is steadfast in our commitment to inclusion, which only makes our league stronger. Did Harrison Butker hook up with a male Georgia Tech cheerleader?Following his speech, a TikTok user named @TheSarahBader posted a video in which she shared a clip of Butkers comments on Pride Month and then asked, Didnt you hook up with that male cheerleader at Georgia Tech in college? The TikToker offered no evidence or details whatsoever to back up her claim. Butker attended Georgia Tech, starting in 2013, and graduated in 2016. During his time there, he played as a kicker for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets football team and earned a degree in industrial engineering. But no publicly available evidence suggests that he did. However, her video went viral and so did her claim, thanks in part to two media outlets, The Blast and Yahoo! (which syndicated the article). The Blasts headline said, Bombshell Accusation Claims Harrison Butker Hooked Up With Male Cheerleader In College, though the article stated, To be clear, Harrison Butker has not commented on whether he is part of the LGBTQ+ community or not. Did Harrison Butker undergo ex-gay conversion therapy? As rumors of Harrison Butkers gay past circulated, so too did an obviously fake social media post in which Butker seemed to confirm his past homosexual behavior while adding, Ive gotten over the evil feelings I used to have.Reddit and social media users also circulated that Butker attended Republican former Vice President Mike Pences conversion therapy camp, according to a TikTok video from @broadcastboys. @broadcastboys BREAKING DOWN THE HARRISON BUTKER COMMENCEMENT CLOWN SHOW #harrisonbutker #chiefs #nfl #gender #society original sound Broadcast Boys @broadcastboys also pointed out that Butkers Instagram account (@buttkicker7) features almost no images of women but has numerous pictures of him disembarking from airplanes and jets while wearing stylish print suits, suggesting a vain self-preoccupation with fashion that some read as homoerotic. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Harrison Butker (@buttkicker7) Did Harrison Butker actually attend Mike Pences conversion therapy camp?Theres no proof to suggest that Harrison Butker ever underwent conversion therapy, the widely debunked and pseudoscientific form of psychological torture that purports to change a persons sexual orientation or gender identity. In 2000,when Pence was running for Congress, his campaign websites policy section said Congress should conduct an audit to see if federal money is being given to organizations that celebrate and encourage the types of behaviors that facilitate the spreading of the HIV virus. It added, Resources should be directed toward those institutions which provide assistance to those seeking to change their sexual behavior. To people familiar with how conservative Christians talk, the words seeking to change their sexual behavior are a clear reference to conversion therapy. That, taken withPences long history of anti-LGBTQ+ statements and actions, lent further credence that Pence supports conversion therapy. But theres no evidence that Pence ever established a conversion therapy camp or that Butker ever attended it or any conversion therapy program whatsoever. Why do people think that Harrison Butker underwent conversion therapy? Its likely that the rumors about Harrison Butker and conversion therapy began as a way to insult and vilify him as a self-loathing closet case for his religiosity and anti-LGBTQ+ comments. The rumors are part of a long-running trope suspecting all homophobes of actually being closeted homosexuals. But while history is littered with numerous instances of anti-gay public figures turning out to have homosexual pasts (including numerous anti-LGBTQ+ Republicans, evangelical pastors, and ex-gay therapists), theres no proof as of yet that Harrison Butker is among them.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 0 Views 0 Προεπισκόπηση

THEONION.COMStarbase Named Best City To Start Family With BossNEW YORKDescribing the city recently incorporated by SpaceX workers as ideal for those hoping to settle down and raise their employers children, U.S. News & World Report published a new ranking this week that names Starbase, TX as the best city in which to start a family with ones boss.Across all metrics, we found there is no place in the country better suited than Starbase for people looking to raise a CEOs progeny after being impregnated at work, said a U.S. News spokesperson, explaining that while most cities offered some opportunity for insemination by senior management, none could match Starbase when it came to the supply closets, private boardrooms, and staff parking garages that make child propagation convenient. Starbase was built from the ground up with an eye toward making subordinates serve as vessels for producing offspring. With its ready access to executive-level semen and its high median under-the-table child support payments, this town is perfect for anyone with a fertile womb and a desire to be sister wives with their coworkers.Galloway added that even if potential residents were looking for something less permanent, Starbase was still a great place to be felt up by a boss. The post Starbase Named Best City To Start Family With Boss appeared first on The Onion.0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 0 Views 0 Προεπισκόπηση
