APNEWS.COMSix planets are hanging out in early morning skies this month. Heres how to spot themA girl looks through a telescope in Caracas, Venezuela, on Sunday, May 15, 2022. (AP Photo/Matias Delacroix, File)2025-08-14T13:12:52Z NEW YORK (AP) Six planets are hanging out in the sky this month in whats known as a planetary parade. Catch the spectacle while you can because its the last one of the year. These linkups happen when several planets appear to line up in the night sky at once. Such parades are fairly common, happening around every year depending on the number of planets. At least one bright planet can be spotted on most nights, weather permitting, according to NASA.Six planets were visible in January skies and every planet of our solar system was visible in February, but not all could be spotted with the naked eye.Venus, Jupiter, Saturn and a faint Mercury are visible this month without any special equipment, and the best chances to spot them are over the next week. Uranus and Neptune can only be glimpsed through binoculars and telescopes.Jupiter and Venus made a close brush earlier this week and are still near each other in the eastern sky, close together like cats eyes, said Carolyn Sumners at the Houston Museum of Natural Science. Mercury will be at its farthest point from the sun on Tuesday morning, making it easier to spot before it disappears into the suns glare. To catch the planets, go out in the morning shortly before sunrise and look east. Try to find Jupiter and Venus clustered together first. Saturn is off to the side and Mercury will be close to the horizon, trying to rise before the sun. Youre looking for little tiny pinpoints of light, but they are the brightest ones, said Justin Bartel with the Science Museum of Virginia. They dont really twinkle like the stars do.Before heading out, make sure it is a clear, cloudless morning and try to get away from tall buildings that could block the view. Mercury will hide behind the sun again toward the end of the month, but a crescent moon will then join the parade. The next big planetary hangout is in February.___The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institutes Department of Science Education and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. APNEWS.COMWhat to know about the Putin-Trump summit in AlaskaU.S. President Donald Trump meets with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the G-20 Summit on July 7, 2017, in Hamburg, Germany. (AP Photo/Evan Vucci, File)2025-08-11T18:06:08Z The U.S.-Russia summit in Alaska is happening where East meets West quite literally in a place familiar to both countries as a Cold War front line of missile defense, radar outposts and intelligence gathering.Whether it can lead to a deal to produce peace in Ukraine more than 3 1/2 years after Moscows invasion remains to be seen.Heres what to know about the meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump, the first summit in four years:When and where is it taking place? The summit takes place Friday at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson outside Anchorage starting about 11:30 a.m. (1930 GMT, 3:30 p.m. EDT), between Putin and Trump as well as a meeting of the delegations, said Yuri Ushakov, Putins foreign policy adviser. Its Putins first trip to the U.S. since 2015 for the U.N. General Assembly in New York. Because the U.S. isnt a member of the International Criminal Court, which in 2023 issued a warrant for Putin on war crimes accusations, its under no obligation to arrest him. Both countries confirmed a meeting between only Putin and Trump, despite initial suggestions that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy might take part. The Kremlin has long pushed back against Putin meeting Zelenskyy - at least until a peace deal is reached by both sides and is ready to be signed.Putin said last week he wasnt against meeting Zelenskyy but certain conditions need to be created and were still a long way off. That raised fears about excluding Ukraine from negotiations. Kyiv and its European allies stressed that peace cannot be achieved without Kyivs involvement. Zelenskyy was in Berlin for virtual meetings Wednesday with Trump and European leaders to try to ensure Ukraine and its allies are heard before the summit. The Ukrainian president told the group Putin is bluffing about his military might and the effectiveness of sanctions, and is trying to apply pressure ... on all sectors of the Ukrainian front to try to show that Russia is capable of occupying all of Ukraine. In reality, sanctions are hitting Russias war economy hard, Zelenskyy said.Zelenskyy also met with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer in London on Thursday. When it was found to contain vast resources, it was seen by Russians as a nave deal that generated remorse. After the USSRs collapse, Alaska was a subject of nostalgia and jokes for Russians. One popular song in the 1990s went: Dont play the fool, America give back our dear Alaska land. Sam Greene of Kings College London said on X the symbolism of Alaska as the site of a summit about Ukraine was horrendous as though designed to demonstrate that borders can change, land can be bought and sold. Trump has appeared increasingly exasperated with Putin over Russias refusal to halt the bombardment of Ukraine. Kyiv has agreed to a ceasefire, insisting on a truce as a first step toward peace.Moscow presented ceasefire conditions that are nonstarters for Zelenskyy, such as withdrawing troops from the four regions Russia illegally annexed in 2022, halting mobilization efforts, or freezing Western arms deliveries. For a broader peace, Putin demands Kyiv cede the annexed regions, even though Russia doesnt fully control them, and Crimea, renounce a bid to join NATO, limit the size of its armed forces and recognize Russian as an official language along with Ukrainian. Zelenskyy insists any peace deals include robust security guarantees to protect Ukraine from future Russian aggression.Putin has warned Ukraine it will face tougher conditions for peace as Russian troops forge into other regions to build what he described as a buffer zone. Some observers suggested Russia could trade those recent gains for territory under Ukrainian control in the four annexed regions annexed by Moscow. Zelenskyy said Saturday that Ukrainians will not give their land to the occupier. But Trump said Monday: Therell be some land swapping going on. I know that through Russia and through conversations with everybody. To the good, for the good of Ukraine. Good stuff, not bad stuff. Also, some bad stuff for both. Kyiv wont give up territory it controls, he added, saying that would be unconstitutional and would serve only as a springboard for a future Russian invasion. He said discussions led by the U.S. on ending the war have not addressed key Ukrainian demands, including security guarantees to prevent future Russian aggression and including Europe in negotiations.French President Emmanuel Macron said Wednesday that Trump was very clear in a virtual meeting with European leaders and Zelenskyy that the U.S. wants to achieve a ceasefire. Macron added that Trump had been clear that territorial issues relating to Ukraine ... will only be negotiated by the Ukrainian president. What are expectations? Trump said Wednesday there will be unspecified very severe consequences if Putin does not agree to stop the war after the summit. Putin sees a meeting with Trump as a chance to cement Russias territorial gains, keep Ukraine out of NATO and prevent it from hosting any Western troops so Moscow can gradually pull the country back into its orbit. He believes time is on his side as Ukrainian forces are struggling to stem Russian advances along the front amid swarms of Moscows missiles and drones. The meeting is a diplomatic coup for Putin, isolated since the invasion. The Kremlin sought to portray renewed U.S. contacts as two superpowers looking to resolve various global problems, with Ukraine being just one. Ukraine and its European allies are concerned a summit without Kyiv could allow Putin to get Trump on his side and force Ukraine into concessions. Any decisions that are without Ukraine are at the same time decisions against peace, Zelenskyy said. They will not bring anything. These are dead decisions. They will never work.European officials echoed that.As we work towards a sustainable and just peace, international law is clear: All temporarily occupied territories belong to Ukraine, European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said. A sustainable peace also means that aggression cannot be rewarded.NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte said Sunday he believed Trump was making sure that Putin is serious, and if he is not, then it will stop there. If he is serious, then from Friday onwards, the process will continue. Ukraine getting involved, the Europeans being involved, Rutte added.Since last week, Putin spoke to Chinese leader Xi Jinping, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Brazilian President Luiz Incio Lula da Silva and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, as well as the leaders of South Africa, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Belarus and Kyrgyzstan, the Kremlin said. That suggested Putin perhaps wanted to brief Russias most important allies about a potential settlement, said pro-Kremlin analyst Sergei Markov. (AP Photo)2025-08-14T09:51:17Z SRINAGAR, India (AP) At least 32 people are dead in flash floods caused by torrential rains in a remote, mountainous village in Indian-controlled Kashmir, a top disaster management official said Thursday, as rescue teams scouring the devastated Himalayan village brought at least 100 people to safety.Mohammed Irshad said rescue teams scouring the devastated Himalayan village of Chositi brought at least 100 people to safety. He said initial estimations suggested at least 50 others were still missing.Indias deputy minister for science and technology, Jitendra Singh, said the floods were triggered by a cloudburst in Jammu and Kashmirs Chositi area and could result in substantial casualty. Some of the rescued people were badly injured and were being treated in local hospitals, said Susheel Kumar Sharma, a local official.Chositi is a remote Himalayan village in Kashmirs Kishtwar district and is the last village accessible to motor vehicles on the route of an annual Hindu pilgrimage to a mountainous shrine. WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMWhats with the Harrison Butker conversion therapy rumors?Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker has helped his team win three Super Bowlssince joining them in 2017. He holds the record for kicking the longest-ever field goal in a Super Bowl (57 yards) and for scoring the most field goals in a Super Bowl (nine). However, Harrison Butker has also become infamous for making anti-LGBTQ+ comments during a graduation speech and was rumored to have previously slept with men and undergone so-called ex-gay conversion therapy. Related Heres what scientific studies on conversion therapy say Are any of these rumors true? Did Harrison Butker really undergo conversion therapy? Did he really hook up with a Georgia Tech male cheerleader? Lets take a closer look at the claims below.Did Harrison Butker mention conversion therapy in his Benedictine College graduation speech? Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today No. Harrison Butker didnt mention conversion therapy in his May 11, 2024, commencement address atBenedictine Collegein Atchison, Kansas (a school that once forced its out gay basketball playerJallen Messersmith to remove a Pride flag hung in his dorm room window). However, Butker did use the speech to praise traditional gender roles and make anti-LGBTQ+ comments. In his speech, Butker said that degenerate cultural values have negatively impacted everyone. He encouraged the schools Catholic students to speak the truth amid a society that tries to silence them. He then insinuated that Catholic government leaders, like then-President Joe Biden, of pushing dangerous gender ideologies onto the youth of America. Butker also mentioned the deadly sin sort of pride that has an entire month dedicated to it. Additionally, Butker said that women have been fed diabolical lies about placing their careers over the fulfillment of marrying a man and becoming a homemaker (like his wife). He also encouraged men to fight against the cultural emasculation of men.Following widespread criticism, Butker stood by his words, saying, If it wasnt clear that the timeless Catholic values are hated by many, it is now. As to be expected, the more Ive talked about what I value most, which is my Catholic faith, the more polarizing Ive become. Its a decision Ive consciously made and one I do not regret at all. How did the LGBTQ+ community respond to Harrison Butkers graduation speech?Critics called the speech misogynistic and queerphobic. In a statement, Sarah Kate Ellis, president and CEO of the LGBTQ+ media watchdog group GLAAD, said, Kansas City Chiefs player Harrison Butkers commencement speech was not only a clear miss, it was inaccurate, ill-informed, and woefully out of step with Americans about Pride, LGBTQ people, and women. The organization also noted that gender ideologies is a term fabricated by anti-LGBTQ+ activists and noted that then-Pope Francis had taken more actions than any pope in history to support LGBTQ+ people, especially trans people, and to welcome them into the Catholic church. The LGBTQ+ sports website Outsports named Butker as its 2024 A**hole of the Year, calling the speech an awful, mean-spirited commentary that targeted the LGBTQ community with pettiness and disdain. How did the NFL respond to Harrison Butkers graduation speech? The Kansas City Chiefs head coach, Andy Reid, said, Were a microcosm of life. Everybody is from different areas, different religions, different races. And so, we all get along, we all respect each others opinions and not necessarily do we go by those, but we respect everybody to have a voice. [Thats the] great thing about America. my wish is that everybody could kind of follow that. The Chiefs chairman, Clark Hunt, said, One of the things I talk to the players every year about at training camp is using their platform to make a difference. We have players on both sides of the political spectrum, both sides of whatever controversial issue you want to bring up. Im not at all concerned when our players use their platform to make a difference, the Associated Press reported.Former Kansas City commissioner Justice Horn condemned the speech, writing via social media, Harrison Butker doesnt represent Kansas City nor has he ever. Kansas City has always been a place that welcomes, affirms, and embraces our LGBTQ+ community members. Harrison Butker doesnt represent Kansas City nor has he ever. Kansas City has always been a place that welcomes, affirms, and embraces our LGBTQ+ community members. pic.twitter.com/4vZ14SXgb6 Justice Horn (@JusticeHorn_) May 14, 2024 In a statement, Jonathan Beane, the NFLs senior vice president and chief diversity and inclusion officer, told People magazine, Harrison Butker gave a speech in his personal capacity. His views are not those of the NFL as an organization. The NFL is steadfast in our commitment to inclusion, which only makes our league stronger. Did Harrison Butker hook up with a male Georgia Tech cheerleader?Following his speech, a TikTok user named @TheSarahBader posted a video in which she shared a clip of Butkers comments on Pride Month and then asked, Didnt you hook up with that male cheerleader at Georgia Tech in college? The TikToker offered no evidence or details whatsoever to back up her claim. Butker attended Georgia Tech, starting in 2013, and graduated in 2016. During his time there, he played as a kicker for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets football team and earned a degree in industrial engineering. But no publicly available evidence suggests that he did. However, her video went viral and so did her claim, thanks in part to two media outlets, The Blast and Yahoo! (which syndicated the article). The Blasts headline said, Bombshell Accusation Claims Harrison Butker Hooked Up With Male Cheerleader In College, though the article stated, To be clear, Harrison Butker has not commented on whether he is part of the LGBTQ+ community or not. Did Harrison Butker undergo ex-gay conversion therapy? As rumors of Harrison Butkers gay past circulated, so too did an obviously fake social media post in which Butker seemed to confirm his past homosexual behavior while adding, Ive gotten over the evil feelings I used to have.Reddit and social media users also circulated that Butker attended Republican former Vice President Mike Pences conversion therapy camp, according to a TikTok video from @broadcastboys. @broadcastboys BREAKING DOWN THE HARRISON BUTKER COMMENCEMENT CLOWN SHOW #harrisonbutker #chiefs #nfl #gender #society original sound Broadcast Boys @broadcastboys also pointed out that Butkers Instagram account (@buttkicker7) features almost no images of women but has numerous pictures of him disembarking from airplanes and jets while wearing stylish print suits, suggesting a vain self-preoccupation with fashion that some read as homoerotic. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Harrison Butker (@buttkicker7) Did Harrison Butker actually attend Mike Pences conversion therapy camp?Theres no proof to suggest that Harrison Butker ever underwent conversion therapy, the widely debunked and pseudoscientific form of psychological torture that purports to change a persons sexual orientation or gender identity. In 2000,when Pence was running for Congress, his campaign websites policy section said Congress should conduct an audit to see if federal money is being given to organizations that celebrate and encourage the types of behaviors that facilitate the spreading of the HIV virus. It added, Resources should be directed toward those institutions which provide assistance to those seeking to change their sexual behavior. To people familiar with how conservative Christians talk, the words seeking to change their sexual behavior are a clear reference to conversion therapy. That, taken withPences long history of anti-LGBTQ+ statements and actions, lent further credence that Pence supports conversion therapy. But theres no evidence that Pence ever established a conversion therapy camp or that Butker ever attended it or any conversion therapy program whatsoever. Why do people think that Harrison Butker underwent conversion therapy? Its likely that the rumors about Harrison Butker and conversion therapy began as a way to insult and vilify him as a self-loathing closet case for his religiosity and anti-LGBTQ+ comments. The rumors are part of a long-running trope suspecting all homophobes of actually being closeted homosexuals. But while history is littered with numerous instances of anti-gay public figures turning out to have homosexual pasts (including numerous anti-LGBTQ+ Republicans, evangelical pastors, and ex-gay therapists), theres no proof as of yet that Harrison Butker is among them.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 Commentaires 0 Parts 1 Vue 0 Aperçu

THEONION.COMStarbase Named Best City To Start Family With BossNEW YORKDescribing the city recently incorporated by SpaceX workers as ideal for those hoping to settle down and raise their employers children, U.S. News & World Report published a new ranking this week that names Starbase, TX as the best city in which to start a family with ones boss.Across all metrics, we found there is no place in the country better suited than Starbase for people looking to raise a CEOs progeny after being impregnated at work, said a U.S. News spokesperson, explaining that while most cities offered some opportunity for insemination by senior management, none could match Starbase when it came to the supply closets, private boardrooms, and staff parking garages that make child propagation convenient. Starbase was built from the ground up with an eye toward making subordinates serve as vessels for producing offspring. With its ready access to executive-level semen and its high median under-the-table child support payments, this town is perfect for anyone with a fertile womb and a desire to be sister wives with their coworkers.Galloway added that even if potential residents were looking for something less permanent, Starbase was still a great place to be felt up by a boss. The post Starbase Named Best City To Start Family With Boss appeared first on The Onion.0 Commentaires 0 Parts 1 Vue 0 Aperçu

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMIts well-known that Lindsey Graham is gay, Trump ally testifies in depositionOne of the presidents closest allies in right-wing social media, Laura Loomer, said that Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) is gay and that its well-known among Donald Trumps staff. Graham who is 70, has never married, and has opposed LGBTQ+ rights throughout his career has been the subject of gay rumors for years but has never publicly come out as gay.Loomers statements came during a deposition in her defamation lawsuit against HBO. She claims in the lawsuit that late-night host Bill Maher defamed her in 2024 when he suggested that she was having an affair with Trump. HBOs argument is that Maher has a First Amendment right to speculate about the relationships of public figures, just like Loomer has First Amendment free speech rights that she exercises as an influencer. Related Nancy Mace falsely accused this doctor of child abuse & she lost her job. Shes running for Senate. As part of that line of argumentation, HBOs lawyer asked Loomer about social media posts she made last year calling Graham gay. When is Lindsey coming out of the closet? We all you know youre gay, Lindsey, Loomer wrote in 2024 on X. She was responding to how Graham had called her toxic. Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today And you responded to him on Twitter, right? HBO lawyer Katherine Bolger asked Loomer during the deposition, according to court records obtained by The Daily Beast. The deposition was conducted on June 4, 2025.Yeah, I called him gay, Loomer responded. Its well-known.Several of President Trumps staff have told me in confidence that that Lindsey Graham is gay, Loomer continued.Hold on, Ms. Loomer, Bolger responded. Theres no question.I know, Loomer said. Im just explaining. That part of the deposition went viral this week, and Loomer posted about it on X yesterday: I was under oath. I couldnt lie. That explanation is questionable because, according to the deposition transcript, she was not directly asked whether she believes Graham is gay. Graham was first elected to the Senate in 2002 after serving for almost a decade in the House of Representatives. He was a state lawmaker prior to that. Throughout his career, he has opposed LGBTQ+ rights, voting for the anti-LGBTQ+ Defense of Marriage Act in 1996 and voting for a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex couples from marrying in 2006. I believe in the traditional definition of marriage as being between one man and one woman, he said at the time. His opposition to marriage rights for same-sex couples held until 2022, when he voted against the Respect for Marriage Act. He has also voted against employment protections for LGBTQ+ people, voted to confirm anti-LGBTQ+ judges, and even opposed adoption rights for LGBTQ+ people. He voted against including LGBTQ+ people in federal hate crimes legislation, saying that would divide Americans, and he opposed allowing gay and bisexual people to serve openly in the military. But he has also faced gay rumors throughout his career, well before gay adult film actor Sean Harding went public in 2020 with accusations that Graham had purchased the services of male sex workers who knew him as Lady G.Graham has always denied the rumors. I know its really gonna upset a lot of gay menIm sure hundreds of em are gonna be jumping off the Golden Gate Bridgebut I aint available, he told the New York Times in 2010. He maintained that denial in 2018 after comedian Chelsea Handler called him gay. She knows zero about me, Graham told TMZ at the time. To the extent that it matters, Im not gay.Loomer has a history of lobbing insults on the right and had a public feud with anti-LGBTQ+ Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) last year in which she called the Georgia congresswoman Marjorie Traitor Greene, a fake Christian wh**e, and the dumbest bi**h in Congress. APNEWS.COMA car accident in small-town Tennessee leads to US charges against a major Mexican drug operationThe U.S. Department of Justice logo is seen on a podium before a press conference, May 6, 2025, at the Justice Department in Washington. (AP Photo/Julia Demaree Nikhinson, File)2025-08-14T14:56:45Z WASHINGTON (AP) The investigation began years ago after two drug dealers got into a car accident in a small Tennessee town. What followed was a series of secret wiretaps, a shootout with police and the discovery of drugs hidden in a tractor trailer that would eventually lead federal investigators back to cartel leaders in Mexico. The investigation culminated with Justice Department indictments unsealed Thursday against three leaders and two high-ranking enforcers of the United Cartels, a leading rival of Jalisco New Generation Cartel. The U.S. government is offering a reward of up to $10 million for information leading to the arrest of United Cartels top leader, Juan Jos Faras lvarez El Abuelo, or the grandfather along with multimillion-dollar rewards for the four others. All five are believed to be in Mexico. The cases, as outlined in court documents, provide a glimpse into how drugs produced by violent cartels in large labs in Mexico flow across the U.S. border and reach American streets. They also highlight the violent fallout that drug trafficking leaves in its path from the mountains of Mexico to small U.S. towns. These cases in particular serve as a powerful reminder of the insidious impacts that global cartels can have on our local American communities, Matthew Galeotti, acting assistant attorney general in charge of the Justice Departments criminal division said in an interview with The Associated Press. The chain started with a violent cartel in Mexico and it ended with law enforcement being shot at in a small town. United Cartels is an umbrella organization made up of smaller cartels that have worked for different groups over time. It holds a fierce grip over the western state of Michoacan, Mexico. United Cartels is not as widely known as Jalisco New Generation, but given its role as a prolific methamphetamine producer, it has become a top tier target for U.S. law enforcement. It was one of eight groups recently named foreign terrorist organizations by the Trump administration. A car crash and an abandoned protective caseThe case goes back to 2019, when two dealers got into a car accident in a small town outside Knoxville, Tennessee, according to a search warrant affidavit filed in court. While fleeing the scene of the crash, they threw a hardened protective case filled with meth behind a building before being caught by police, according to court documents. Authorities began investigating, using wiretaps, search warrants and surveillance to identify a man believed to be leading a major drug ring in the Atlanta area: Eladio Mendoza. The investigation into Mendozas suspected drug operation led law enforcement in early 2020 to a hotel near Atlanta. During their surveillance, authorities spotted a man leaving with a large Doritos bag. Troopers tried to stop the man after he drove from Georgia into Tennessee but he fled and fired an AK-style rifle at officers, hitting one in the leg before another trooper shot him. Inside the bag, police found meth and heroin, and identified him as a low-level dealer for Mendozas drug ring, court records say. Weeks later, authorities searched properties linked to Mendoza and seized phones. They discovered messages between Mendoza and a close associate of El Abuelo, the leader of United Cartels, that showed the drugs were coming from Mexico, according to the court records. On one of Mendozas properties, investigators found a tractor trailer that had crossed from Mexica days earlier. When they searched it, authorities seized 850 kilograms of meth hidden in the floor of the truck and discovered more drugs inside a bus and a home on the property, court papers say. Mendoza fled the U.S. a short time later and returned to Mexico, where he was killed by cartels leaders angry that U.S. authorities had seized their cash and drugs, according to prosecutors. Cartels are targeted with terrorist designationsThe case represents the latest effort by the Republican administration to turn up the pressure on cartels through not only indictments of the groups leaders but sanctions. The Treasury Department is also bringing economic sanctions against the five defendants as well as the United Cartels as a group and another cartel, Los Viagras. We have to pursue these criminals up and down the chain to make sure that the end result doesnt result in violence and narcotics distribution on our streets, Galeotti said. In addition to El Abuelo, those facing U.S. indictments are Alfonso Fernndez Magalln, or Poncho, and Nicols Sierra Santana or El Gordo, who authorities say lead smaller cartels under the United Cartels organization. The two other defendants are Edgar Orozco Cabadas or El Kamoni, who was communicating with Mendoza, and Luis Enrique Barragn Chavaz, or Wicho, who serves as Magalln second-in-command, according to authorities. The Trump administration has seen major cooperation from Mexico in recent months in turning over cartel leaders wanted by U.S. authorities. In February, Mexico sent the U.S. 29 drug cartel figures, including drug lord Rafael Caro Quintero, who was behind the killing of a U.S. DEA agent in 1985, to the U.S. And on Tuesday, the Mexican government transferred to American custody 26 additional cartel leaders and other high-ranking members, including a man charged in connection to the killing of a Los Angeles County sheriffs deputy. Were working with the Mexican authorities to pursue these individuals, Galeotti said. We continue to work proactively with them, and we expect that theyll be helpful with us in securing the presence of these individuals in United States courtrooms. APNEWS.COMMalnourished kids arrive daily at a Gaza hospital as Netanyahu denies hungerIslam Qudeih shows her severely malnourished shirtless, 2-year-old daughter, Shamm, to journalists at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, southern Gaza Strip, Saturday, Aug. 9, 2025. Doctors said Shamm may have a genetic disorder that affects muscle and bone development, but there is no way to test for it in Gaza. On Tuesday, August 12, her family was granted permission to travel to a hospital in Italy. (AP Photo/Mariam Dagga)2025-08-14T14:41:17Z KHAN YOUNIS, Gaza Strip (AP) The dead body of 2 1/2-year-old Roa Mashi lay on the table in Gazas Nasser Hospital, her arms and rib cage skeletal, her eyes sunken in her skull. Doctors say she had no preexisting conditions and wasted away over months as her family struggled to find food and treatment. Her family showed The Associated Press a photo of Roas body at the hospital, and it was confirmed by the doctor who received her remains. Several days after she died, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday told local media, There is no hunger. There was no hunger. There was a shortage, and there was certainly no policy of starvation. In the face of international outcry, Netanyahu has pushed back, saying reports of starvation are lies promoted by Hamas. However, U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric this week warned that starvation and malnutrition in Gaza are at the highest levels since the war began. The head of Nassers pediatrics unit said Jamal, who was born with rickets, died from severe malnutrition. (AP Photo/Mariam Dagga) Share Share Facebook Copy Link copied Print Email X LinkedIn Bluesky Flipboard Pinterest Reddit Read More The U.N. says nearly 12,000 children under 5 were found to have acute malnutrition in July including more than 2,500 with severe malnutrition, the most dangerous level. The World Health Organization says the numbers are likely an undercount. The past two weeks, Israel has allowed around triple the amount of food into Gaza than had been entering since late May. That followed 2 1/2 months when Israel barred all food, medicine and other supplies, saying it was to pressure Hamas to release hostages taken during its 2023 attack that launched the war. The new influx has brought more food within reach for some of the population and lowered some prices in marketplaces, though it remains far more expensive than prewar levels and unaffordable for many. While better food access might help much of Gazas population, it wont help the children who are severely malnourished, said Alex DeWaal, executive director of the World Peace Foundation at Tufts University, who has worked on famine and humanitarian issues for more than 40 years. When a person is severely malnourished, vital micronutrients are depleted and bodily functions deteriorate. Simply feeding the person can cause harm, known as refeeding syndrome, potentially leading to seizures, coma or death. Instead, micronutrients must first be replenished with supplements and therapeutic milk in a hospital. Were talking about thousands of kids who need to be in hospital if theyre going to have a chance of survival, DeWaal said. If this approach of increasing the food supply had been undertaken two months ago, probably many of those kids would not have gotten into this situation.Any improvement is also threatened by a planned new Israeli offensive that Netanyahu says will capture Gaza City and the tent camps where most of the territorys population is located. That will prompt a huge new wave of displacement and disrupt food delivery, U.N. and aid officials warn. Preexisting conditions The Gaza Health Ministry says 42 children died of malnutrition-related causes since July 1, along with 129 adults. It says 106 children have died of malnutrition during the entire war. The ministry, part of the Hamas-run government, is staffed by medical professionals and its figures on casualties are seen by the U.N. and other experts as the most reliable. The Israeli military Tuesday pointed to the fact that some children who died had preexisting conditions, arguing their deaths were unrelated to their nutritional status. It said a review by its experts had concluded there are no signs of a widespread malnutrition phenomenon in Gaza.At his press briefing Sunday, Netanyahu spoke in front of a screen reading Fake Starving Children over photos of skeletal children with preexisting conditions. He accused Hamas of starving the remaining Israeli hostages and repeated claims the militant group is diverting large amounts of aid, a claim the U.N. denies.Doctors in Gaza acknowledge that some of those dying or starving have chronic conditions, including cerebral palsy, rickets or genetic disorders, some of which make children more vulnerable to malnutrition. However, those conditions are manageable when food and proper medical treatments are available, they say. The worsening shortages of food led to these cases swift deterioration, said Dr. Yasser Abu Ghali, head of Nassers pediatrics unit. Malnutrition was the main factor in their deaths.Of 13 emaciated children whose cases the AP has seen since late July, five had no preexisting conditions including three who died according to doctors. Abu Ghali spoke next to the body of Jamal al-Najjar, a 5-year-old who died Tuesday of malnutrition and was born with rickets, which hinders the ability to metabolize vitamins, weakening bones. In the past months, the boys weight fell from 16 kilograms to 7 (35 pounds to 15), said his father, Fadi al-Najjar, whose lean face showed his own hunger. Asked about Netanyahus claim there was no hunger in Gaza, he pointed at Jamals protruding rib cage. Of course theres famine, he said. Does a 5-year-old childs chest normally come to look like this? Her arms, legs and ribs were skeletal, her belly inflated. She has lost all fat and muscle, al-Farra said. She weighed 4 kilograms (9 pounds), a third of a 2-year-olds normal weight.Doctors suspect Shamm suffers from a rare genetic condition called glycogen storage disease, which changes how the body uses and stores glycogen, a form of sugar, and can impact muscle and bone development. But they cant test for it in Gaza, al-Farra said.Normally, the condition can be managed through a high-carbohydrate diet. Her family applied a year ago for medical evacuation, joining a list of thousands the WHO says need urgent treatment abroad. For months, Israel slowed evacuations to a near standstill or halted them for long stretches. But it appears to be stepping up permissions, with more than 60 allowed to leave in the first week of August, according to the U.N.Permission for Shamm to leave Gaza finally came this week, and on Wednesday, she was heading to a hospital in Italy. When she took Roa to Nasser Hospital in October, the child was severely malnourished, according to al-Farra, who said Roa had no preexisting conditions. At the time, in the last months of 2024, Israel had reduced aid entry to some of the lowest levels of the war. The family was also displaced multiple times by Israeli military operations. Each move interrupted Roas treatment as it took time to find a clinic to get nutritional supplements, Mashi said. The family was reduced to one meal a day often boiled macaroni but whatever she ate, it didnt change anything in her, Mashi said. Two weeks ago, they moved into the tent camps of Muwasi on Gazas southern coast. Roas decline accelerated.I could tell it was only a matter of two or three more days, Mashi said in the familys tent Friday, the day after she had died. APNEWS.COMDeSantis announces plans for second immigration detention facility in north FloridaFlorida Gov. Ron DeSantis speaks during a news conference about a recent immigration enforcement operation, at the South Florida office of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Enforcement and Removal Operations, May 1, 2025, in Miramar, Fla. (AP Photo/Rebecca Blackwell, file)2025-08-14T14:03:30Z TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis administration is preparing to open a second immigration detention facility at a state prison in north Florida, as a federal judge decides the fate of the states holding center for immigrants at an isolated airstrip in the Florida Everglades dubbed Alligator Alcatraz.DeSantis announced Thursday that the new facility is to be housed at the Baker Correctional Institution, a state prison about 43 miles (69 kilometers) west of downtown Jacksonville. It is expected to hold 1,300 immigration detention beds, though that capacity could be expanded to 2,000, state officials said. After opening the Everglades facility last month, DeSantis justified building the second detention center that he dubbed Deportation Depot, by saying President Donald Trumps administration needs the additional capacity to hold and deport more immigrants. There is a demand for this, DeSantis said. Im confident that it will be filled. The governor touted the relative ease and economy of setting up the north facility at a pre-existing prison, estimating the build-out cost to be $6 million. Thats compared to the hundreds of millions of dollars the state has committed to construct the vast network of tents and trailers at the south facility in the rugged and remote Florida swamp. This part of the facility is not being used right now for the state prisoners. It just gives us an ability to go in, stand it up quickly, stand it up cheaply, DeSantis said of the state prison, calling the site ready-made. Stay up to date with the latest U.S. news by signing up to our WhatsApp channel. It could take two to three weeks to get the facility operational, according to Kevin Guthrie, the director of the Florida Division of Emergency Management, the agency in charge of building the immigration facilities. The state had announced plans to temporarily close the prison in 2021, due to persistent staffing shortages. A building thats been dormant now for a couple of years is going to have some unforeseen challenges, Guthrie said when estimating the construction timeline.DeSantis pledged that detainees at the new facility will have the same services that are available at the states first detention center. Attorneys for detainees at the Everglades facility have called the conditions there deplorable, writing in a court filing that some detainees are showing symptoms of COVID-19 without being separated from the general population. Rainwater floods their tents and officers go cell-to-cell pressuring detainees to sign voluntary removal orders before theyre allowed to consult their attorneys.Recent conditions at Alligator Alcatraz have fueled a sense of desperation among detainees, the attorneys said in the court filing.Conditions at the hastily built detention center were outlined in a filing made Wednesday ahead of a hearing Monday over the legal rights of the detainees. Civil rights attorneys want U.S. District Judge Rodolfo Ruiz to ensure that detainees at the facility have confidential access to their lawyers, which the lawyers say they havent had. They also wanted the judge to identify an immigration court that has jurisdiction over the detention center so that petitions can be filed for the detainees bond or release. The civil rights attorneys say theyve been told regularly that federal immigration courts in Florida dont have jurisdiction over the detainees held in the Everglades.___ Associated Press writer Mike Schneider in Orlando contributed to this report. WWW.404MEDIA.CO4K Blu-Ray of 22-Year-Old 'Master and Commander' Is Sold Out Everywhere, Being Scalped on eBayAugust2025. The new limited edition 4K Blu-ray of the 2005 film Master and Commander has sold out everywhere. Secondary markets are now battlefields. There are two kinds of people in this world: those who read the above sentences and feel an intense pain and yearning for comradery and combat on the high seas, and those who have never seen Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World.Copies of the new 4K release of the film are now selling on eBay for roughly double its MSRP, proof that physical media is not dead.Released in 2005, Master and Commander is a war movie set in the Napoleonic period that focuses on the relationship between Captain Jack Aubrey of the Royal Navy and ships surgeon Stephen Maturin, played by Russell Crowe and Paul Bettany respectively. The film, which is based on a 20-book-long novel series of the same name, grossed $212 million on a $150 million budget but didnt become a runaway hit at the time. But in the two decades since it first hit screens, Master and Commander has grown in esteem, especially in American national security circles. Its a cult favorite. The occasional live screenings at revival theaters routinely sell out, memes involving the films opening text are ubiquitous, and it often lands on lists of the the best movies of the 2000s. In the middle of July, a joint venture of Sony and Disney studios announced it would publish a high quality 4K UltraHD limited edition steelbook Blu-ray to be released in August. Fans went nuts. This would be the highest quality home release of the beloved film ever seen. Fans tracked pre-orders as they went live on Amazon, Wal-Mart, and other retailers. It sold out in days, and has done so consistently every time its been restocked. Master and Commander heads are so hungry for 4K Crowe that theyre now paying double and triple the asking price for the steelbook copy on eBay and several notable people have posted about how they cant find a copy.totally missed that there was a new master and commander 4K out and naturally it is completely out of stock jamelle (@jamellebouie.net) 2025-08-13T20:04:19.823ZIts rare in 2025 that the physical release of a 20 year old film is met with such fervor. Delight is especially high among members of Americas military community. Soldiers, officers, journalists, and the extremely online NatSec weirdos love Master and Commander. Like Star Wars, the movie has become a lingua franca in U.S. military circles where its a source of memes and concepts that drives discussion. There's no doubt that Master and Commander is beloved within the national security community. What's harder to explain is why, Robert Farley, a senior lecturer at the University of Kentucky, told 404 Media. Farley said he just rewatched the movie two weeks ago after forcing a friend to watch whod never seen it.If I had to hazard a guess, it's because the movie depicts the tight functioning of a community of warfighters, a community that is mostly comfortable with itselfand yet is deeply grounded in English social structure, Farley said. As in any well-functioning military, everyone has a place to be and a job to do. Jack Aubrey isnt so much brilliant as lucky, which adds to the workmanlike aspect. I'd say that there's a male bonding aspect to it (I don't believe any female character has even a single line), but I know plenty of women in the NatSec space who will quote Oceans are battlefields in everyday conversation.Pauline Shanks Kaurin, a former military ethics professor at the U.S. Naval War College, told 404 Media that shed used Master and Commander in her classes as a way to teach Aristotles three kinds of friendship and, separately, the Ethics of Care. I think its really about the friendship between the Captain and doctor, as well as a portrayal of leadership and comradeship that is still masculine and strong, but not brutal and gratuitous, she said. When reached for comment about the film, Remap Radios Robert Zacnyfamously a fan of the filmwas actively debating paying $140 for a copy of the 4K steelbook. 404 Media informed Zacny that eBay had listings for half that price and asked the Remap founder for his thoughts on the movie and its enduring legacy. There's a moment in the film where Aubrey snaps at Maturin about the things that hold together their little wooden world. Master and Commander is a war movie where the entire concerns of the world are reduced to the interior or a single ship. But it's also a character study about the worlds held within and between individuals. The roles people have to inhabit and the things they have to do in service to duty, the state, to ethics, to morality.Yet this movie is also backdropped by the vastness and wonder of nature, of time considered on an evolutionary scale and the awareness that beyond that bubble of consciousness awaits eternity in the darkness of the sea. The oft-memed opening text is deceptive. It doesn't really matter that Napoleon is the master of Europe. The concept of a battlefield is meaningless to the ocean. The movie is about men waging battles inside themselves to reconcile their own contradictions and choose their own meaning. It's immaculately directed, acted, and scored, but so are a lot of movies. This one endures because it's always offering a berth on this voyage of introspection, and it's so much fun you don't even mind how insistently it reminds you to think about mortality. His thoughts exhausted, Remaps founder pressed 404 Media for information. Now link me some of these good deals on steelbooks, he said. I am gonna be buried with one.0 Commentaires 0 Parts 1 Vue 0 Aperçu

WWW.PRIDE.COM'King of Drag's Henlo Bullfrog on masculinity, mischief, and kings leading the new countercultureHenlo Bullfrog puts the artist in drag artist. His creativity, craftsmanship, and audacity made him a standout in the first season of King of Drag but, as it turns out, weve been admiring his talents for years. When Henlo isnt bringing his incredible talents to the stage himself, hes helping other drag performers snatch the spotlight on both The Boulet Brothers Dragula and RuPauls Drag Race with his incredible airbrushing and costume-making skills Throb Zombie, Crystal Envy, Pi, and his drag mother, Sapphira Cristal, are just a handful of the multitude of drag stars whove donned his incredible work on our screens. But now its Henlos time to shine and shine he did, making it all the way to the finale of Revrys beloved new series. He got there by showing exactly what makes him a singular artist: incredibly creative and deeply subversive works of art."I love what I brought to King of Drag, Henlo tells PRIDE. I stand by everything that I did through the entire experience of growth. Henlo was deeply inspired by the experience of being with his fellow kings in the Man Cave. Its magical to be able to connect with other artists who are among the top of their city. Its given me a brotherhood. Its given me a siblinghood, and people who understand what Im going for, who see it, who dont do it the way I do it," he recalls. As with everything Henlo does, his time on King of Drag was full of thought and intention. Beyond aspiring to claim the crown, he wanted to inspire more people to feel accepted in the art form."Everybody is welcome to kinging, no matter who you are, no matter where you come from, no matter how you identify ... there is no gatekeeping, he says, pointing to the way the cast treated one another as an example. You didnt see any of us gatekeep on the show, our resources, our skills, even our makeup. They were available to each other, because we really do believe that everybody is welcome in the kingdom."He hopes that the audience not only had their eyes opened to the level of artistry and polish on display, but recognize the validity, importance, and necessity of kinging as a part of queer counterculture. One of the things that really interests me about it as a medium is that it's this up-and-coming thing, he says. Drag queens used to be more of a voice of the counterculture. Now, because there's been this incredible, necessary, wonderful uplifting of the voice of certain types of drag, [they] become more of a mainstream cultural voice which, congratulations, that's good. But then what fills in that countercultural voice, which is left over? For Henlo, the answer is obvious: Kings. We have aspects of drag that can still hold that place of being edgier, of challenging norms, of being a little more shocking, of taking the word 'revolting' in both the terms of resolution and in the terms of being off-putting," he explains.Being off-putting and revolting through their art is something close to Henlos heart and not just for the shock value, but because art, he explains, should make the mainstream and the powerful uncomfortable."Drag kings hold this unique place that we get to punch up at the very top. Who's at the very top? It's these fucking white men in power who are making it worse for everybody," he says, explaining that kings are perfectly positioned to offer transgressive critiques of the most powerful. "We get to be the ones to poke fun at them, to criticize them, to be playful with the people at the very height of power. That also means we're making the people at the very height of power uncomfortable, which can be dangerous, but that's amazing, right?" "Art comforting the disturbed and disturbing the comfortable there's such incredible, incredible value in it," they add, paraphrasing Mexican poet and academic Cesar A. Cruz. From the moment he walked into the Man Cave, his alter ego Henlo Bullfrog stood out from the pack of handsome gents. Not only due to his neon color palette and wild silhouette, but because of the way he complicates his exploration of masculinity by filtering it through a mythological lens one informed by his history with performing folk music."Theres a very specific man in the folk music world that gets explored a lot. Hes a complicated man with a past. Hes morally gray, Henlo describes, while explaining how his character unpacks a different take on masculinity. Henlo is always this masculine archetype. Hes never the man at the height of his powers... Hes not King Oberon. Hes like Puck or Bottom. He is, you know, hes the one who throws the plot into chaos. Hes not exercising power over others, but power is often being exercised over him."Despite that character not being particularly alpha or hyper-masc, Henlo acknowledges that by creating a male character, he is offered the freedom to explore the trickster archetype in ways he would never have the freedom to do as a femme-presenting character."When we have fucked up trickster characters that are nonbinary or feminine, we will see them subjected to more broad fan critique or fan hate... even within communities that know better, it is more permissible to be a certain way when the character is masculine," he explains. This is true even when your character leans into the monstrous, as many of Henlos performances do."When we think about a movie monster that is female or feminine, their gender is inextricable from their monstrousness, he begins. But with masculine monsters, you can basically throw the gender away. And that is very interesting to me, because Henlo is masculine, but hes I mean, is he a muppet of a man [but] he is masculine so that his gender can be to some degree irrelevant and to some degree more acceptable in the archetype that he inhabits, without people being critical or hateful of him."Henlo cites one more essential influence on his drag: his father. "My drag is so heavily informed by my number one positive wholesome masculinity influence, which is my father, he shares. While Henlo opened up about his relationship with his father on the show, it barely scratched the surface of the beautiful connection they share. Only with a parent that supportive could I be as weird as I am, they joke. Unlike many queer and creative folks, Henlo grew up with hippies who never told him who he is, but rather asked him. This, he explains, removes a lot of the hurdles of discovering who you are, when you dont have to first unpack who youve been told you are. From the moment I could communicate, I got to determine that it's why I am so strange and idiosyncratic, because I've gotten to determine who I am my whole life, and I've had people interested in asking me at every stage of my life, and delighted by the answers, he says with a smile. In turn, it means that Henlo has been able to enthusiastically bring his father into his world. "He actually is also one of my drag kids. So Im my own grandpa, he jokes. He does creature drag as well as drag king, and his drag name is King Oberon, so he very much lives in the same canonical fairy world."And Henlos father has been embraced by the Philadelphia drag and queer community in return. He has come with me to some of the most alt clubs, Henlo reveals. He will watch some of these performers... and just turn to me after seeing a queen do an extremely filthy performance, and say, What a bunch of wholesome, nice young people. It really reminds me of the folk scene in the 60s and 70s. Youre just trying to make art make sense in a really difficult world right now. And Im so proud of all of you.""Im so lucky, and like, you know, so few queer people get to have the parental relationship that I have, admits Henlo. My dad has told me that he gets the best of all worlds with me in that he gets to have both a son and a daughter in me."So its no surprise that at least one of Henlos next projects includes collaborating with his father this time on an EP called Cryptid Highway (which is out now). But thats not all. We have a sneaking suspicion that well be seeing more of Henlos work on our TVs again soon. "I have some projects coming out that will I mean, at this point, I feel like its bad luck for people in the northeast to go off to a drag competition television show without my work. So, you know, Ive got some projects coming out in the near future. And Henlo may be making the jump from our screens to the written word. "[Henlo] has a depth of lore to him. He has an extensive backstory and many chapters to his novel that can be explored more deeply. Ive already made some Henlo comics, I just havent published them, and written stories that inform the way I play him, [but I] havent felt ready or havent chosen to share pieces of it with my audience for one reason or another. Yeah, though, I would love to, I could put that out there."Truthfully, fans will take more Henlo any way they can get him, and with this much talent in his fingertips and mind, theres no doubt there are plenty more tricks up his trickster sleeves.0 Commentaires 0 Parts 1 Vue 0 Aperçu
