THEONION.COMRFK Jr. Urges Americans To Grow Lots Of Pubes To Keep Bugs From Crawling In CockholeWASHINGTONPositioning pubic hair as the bodys natural bulwark against urethral intrusions, Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. urged Americans Thursday to grow as many pubes as possible to keep bugs from crawling into their cockholes. Pubes are the strongest type of hair there is, with tensile strength exceeding that of steel, and they serve as a vital barrier for preventing small insects from wriggling into penis holes in search of nutrients or shelter, said the nations top health official, urging Americans to follow his example by covering their groins with a thick nest of hair to deter crickets, silverfish, and other pests intent on entering their urethras. As a matter of preventive health, Id recommend a baseline pubic length of three inchesthe minimum needed to safeguard against larger bug threats such as horseflies, moths, and wolf spiders. Big Urology would have you believe that one little tuft will do the job, but thats like putting up a single traffic cone and calling it border security. Also, this likely goes without saying, but since children dont have hair down there, they should be kept safely indoors until theyre able to grow adequate coverage to protect their vulnerable regions. Kennedy concluded the press conference by announcing a $4 billion federal initiative to raise awareness about the new guidelines nationwide entitled Secure The Slit. The post RFK Jr. Urges Americans To Grow Lots Of Pubes To Keep Bugs From Crawling In Cockhole appeared first on The Onion.0 Comments 0 Shares 28 Views 0 Reviews -
THEONION.COMDeadwoodNow Thats A Great Show, Says Dad After 17-Minute Lapse In ConversationNASHUA, NHSuddenly breaking his silence to extol the virtues of the decades-old HBO series, local dad Henry Breckner reportedly ended a 17-minute lapse in conversation Thursday by saying Deadwoodnow thats a great show. What made Bullock such a great character was that he had a fierce temper, but also a strong sense of justice, which could get you into all sorts of trouble in a town like Deadwood, said Breckner, with witnesses stressing that the 53-year-old cut into the lengthy lull around the dinner table to express his enthusiasm for the Western, which ran from 2004 to 2006, despite it lacking any apparent connection to a recent topic of discussion. [David] Milch really caught lightning in a bottle with that one. Al Swearengen could be one tough son of a bitch, but Ian McShane played him with real humanity. The Gem was a home for a lot of folks in its own strange way. Of course the dialogue was outstanding. Limberdick. What a piece of language. And that ensemble: Charlie Utter, Calamity Jane, good ol Sol. Not to mention the wonderful Brad Dourif. Try and find a better fight scene than Dan Dority taking on Captain Turner. Ill tell you right now, you cant. At press time, witnesses reported that Breckner had woken his family in the middle of the night to add that the Deadwood movie was a pretty great ending to a fantastic series. The post DeadwoodNow Thats A Great Show, Says Dad After 17-Minute Lapse In Conversation appeared first on The Onion.0 Comments 0 Shares 31 Views 0 Reviews -

It is a tragedy that there is something wrong with us; it is a larger tragedy we have not yet been able to pinpoint what precisely it is, said Bret Stephens, addressing colleagues Ross Douthat, David Brooks, Maureen Dowd, and Ezra Klein, who were all gathered as part of the panel aimed at shedding new light on what the hell their deal was. Is it nature? Nurture? Insanity? The University of Chicago? Together, we will probe the strange forces that compel us to write what we write. At press time, the columnists had reached the conclusion that no one would ever know what was wrong with them, deep down, but that this was what made the discussion so worth having. The post NY Times Columnists Hold Roundtable To Determine Whats Wrong With Them appeared first on The Onion.0 Comments 0 Shares 28 Views 0 Reviews -

APNEWS.COMLawyers in landmark social media addiction trial make final appeals to the juryMeta CEO Mark Zuckerberg leaves after testifying in a landmark trial over whether social media platforms deliberately addict and harm children, Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2026, in Los Angeles. (AP Photo/Damian Dovarganes)2026-03-12T14:35:17Z LOS ANGELES (AP) After about a month of hearing from addiction experts, therapists, platform engineers and executives, including Mark Zuckerberg, a jury will listen to closing arguments before heading to the deliberation room to decide whether social media companies should be liable for harms caused to children using their platforms.Closing statements in the trial will begin Thursday at the Spring Street Courthouse in Los Angeles. Lawyers representing the plaintiff, a 20-year-old woman, and those representing the two defendants, Meta and Google-owned YouTube, will make their respective cases to the jurors. TikTok and Snap were also named defendants in the lawsuit, but they each settled before the trial began. The case, along with two others, has been selected as a bellwether trial, meaning its outcome could impact how thousands of similar lawsuits against social media companies are likely to play out. The plaintiff, identified as KGM in documents or Kaley, as her lawyers have called her during the trial, says her early use of social media addicted her to the technology and exacerbated depression and suicidal thoughts. Both the defendants and the plaintiff have pointed to a turbulent home life for Kaley. Her attorneys say she was preyed upon as a vulnerable user, but attorneys representing Meta and Google-owned YouTube have argued Kaley turned to their platforms as a coping mechanism or a means of escaping her mental health struggles. Throughout the trial, Meta argued that Kaley faced significant challenges before she ever used social media. The companys lawyer, Paul Schmidt, said earlier this month that the core question in the case is whether the platforms were a substantial factor in Kayleys mental health struggles. Instead of focusing on Kaley, the attorneys representing YouTube argue that it is not a social media platform and that its features are not addictive. APNEWS.COMIsraeli military drops charges against soldiers charged with abusing Palestinian prisoner2026-03-12T14:11:32Z JERUSALEM (AP) The Israeli military says it is dropping charges against five soldiers who were accused of sexually abusing a Palestinian detainee in an encounter partially caught on camera. The army announced the decision in the high-profile case at a time when much of the countrys attention is focused on the war with Iran. The incident occurred at Sde Teiman, a facility set up to hold Palestinians rounded up in Gaza during Israels war against the Hamas militant group. The leaked video of the abuse was aired last year by Israels Channel 12 and purported to show an incident in which the soldiers sodomized the Palestinian detainee from Gaza. The incident has bitterly divided Israel. Israels move to arrest the soldiers in 2024 prompted fury from hard-line ultranationalists who violently overran the Sde Teiman prison facility in protest. Members of Israels far-right government called the investigation into their conduct an affront to their service. The governments uproar eventually led to the resignation last year of the militarys top legal official, who had filed the indictment and authorized the leak of the video to the TV station.Israel has long been accused of failing to hold its soldiers accountable for crimes committed against Palestinians. The allegations have intensified during the war in Gaza. Israel says its forces act within military and international law and says it thoroughly investigates any alleged abuses. APNEWS.COMIs Atlanta still the Hollywood of the South? A film boomtown faces a testDigital imaging technician Chris Ratledge stands next to his film equipment inside a storage unit in Peachtree City, Ga., Thursday, March 5, 2026. (AP Photo/R.J. Rico)2026-03-12T12:17:14Z ATLANTA (AP) Chris Ratledge used to make as much as $9,500 a week working on film sets around Atlanta. Now, hes on food stamps. The 48-year-old digital imaging technician moved from Indiana to Georgia in 2017 as studios lured by generous tax credits turned Atlanta into the Hollywood of the South, the backdrop for hundreds of productions like The Hunger Games, Stranger Things and more than a dozen Marvel blockbusters.Ratledge said the work was grueling 70-hour weeks were normal but the $72-an-hour pay was transformative. I paid off three years of back taxes in one year, just from the money I made, says Ratledge, who worked on the Netflix movie Red Notice, as well as shows like TBS Miracle Workers and Starzs P-Valley.Those times are long gone: Ratledge has worked just four days on set since May 2024.Instead, hes been working part-time at the front desk of a local tennis center and stringing rackets on the side, trying somehow to support his family of five on $15 an hour without health insurance. His wife, a cancer survivor, has started cleaning houses a few days a week, and theyve downsized their rental home. But their $2,000-a-month income hardly even covers their rent, a shortfall that has left Ratledge in debt and deeply depressed. All I want for Christmas is for my film career back, Ratledge wrote on Instagram in December. Georgias boom goes bustAfter hitting a peak of $4.4 billion in 2022, spending on film and TV production in Georgia has tumbled, reaching just $2.3 billion in the last fiscal year, as total productions dropped from 412 in 2022 to 245 last year. The decline accelerated after the 2023 writers and actors strikes halted productions for months, dealing a blow to an industry still recovering from COVID-19 shutdowns. We saw a lot of productions start looking overseas, knowing that they wouldnt have another work stoppage, said Lee Thomas, the deputy commissioner of the Georgia Film Office. We knew that it would be like a reset to the industry ... but it certainly was a bigger, harder fall than we anticipated and longer. Marvel has left Georgias market its last movie filmed there was 2025s Thunderbolts and shifted its massive productions to the United Kingdom, where labor and production costs are cheaper. Streamers like Netflix are also increasingly filming abroad, while producing fewer shows in general. Other states, including California and Texas, have upped incentives to compete with Georgias tax credits, which can cover up to 30% of production costs. On location in Atlanta Where youve seen Atlanta, dubbed the Hollywood of the South, on screen Local industry Facebook groups are filled with complaints about a lack of work, with some people griping about well-established veterans taking up the few jobs available, said Monique Younger, an Atlanta costume supervisor. Younger says her work is less than half what it once was, making her feel a little bit useless.Jen Farris, an Atlanta native and longtime location scout, said she used to reject offers because she had too much work. Now, shes navigating two- or three-month gaps in between projects, forcing her to watch her pennies. You just pray that you have nested away enough to float a little bit, she said. Training crews for an uncertain futureDespite the bleak landscape, Shadowbox Studios, one of metro Atlantas largest soundstage operators, is betting on the areas future and has urged local filmmakers and industry leaders to rethink whats possible.Shadowbox has been pitching its mammoth spaces to everyone from indie filmmakers to content creators and esports organizers. But it also wants to make sure the citys crew base remains robust. Keeping that talent pipeline strong is key to keeping more productions from leaving, he said.In November, Shadowbox hosted about 25 Black college students for Backlot Academy, a program launched in 2022 to diversify the ranks of professions where personal connections often determine who gets hired. Veteran crew members taught the participants how to decipher call sheets, use walkie-talkie lingo and survive 12-hour days on their feet. Participants could enroll for free in a multiweek digital course on the ins and outs of production and get mentorship as they try to book their first gig.Trainee Julian Williams grew up in Atlanta and watched his city become a playground for Hollywood. One of the Alvin and the Chipmunks movies was even filmed on his street. Now a 24-year-old digital media student at Georgia Piedmont Technical College, Williams is determined to break into the industry as a production assistant, with the hope of one day becoming an assistant director. Hes prepared to follow his film dreams wherever they lead, but for now, hes betting on Atlanta and its collaborative film community.People are genuinely helpful and willing to share what they know, Williams said. Among those helping Williams and the other trainees was Joseph Jones, a Backlot alumnus who credits Shadowbox with helping him embark on a rewarding career as a production assistant. It changed my life, said Jones, 53, who spent years working in hotels but always knew he wanted to work on films. You got anything cooking?Searching for a resetRatledge grew up loving movies, too, especially when, as a 9-year-old, he saw his rural Indiana town of Milan immortalized in 1986s Hoosiers. He has continued to reach out to his network, but hes ready to move on.Ratledge said he isnt looking for a miracle just one steady TV job that would give him breathing room to stabilize his finances and figure out his next move. A five- or six-month series, he said, would allow him to restore his health insurance, file for bankruptcy and hit the reset button.I dont think Im any different than the people who worked in Detroit when the auto industry collapsed in the 70s and everything went overseas, he said. WWW.404MEDIA.CO'AI Is African Intelligence': The Workers Who Train AI Are Fighting BackEvery day, Michael Geoffrey Asia spent eight consecutive hours at his laptop in Kenya staring at porn, annotating what was happening in every frame for an AI data labeling company. When he was done with his shift, he started his second job as the human labor behind AI sex bots, sexting with real lonely people he suspected were in the United States. His boss was an algorithm that told him to flit in and out of different personas. It required a lot of creativity and fast thinking. Because if Im talking to a man, Im supposed to act like a woman. If Im talking to a woman, I need to act like a man. If Im talking to a gay person, I need to act like a gay person, he told me at a cowering space I met him at in Nairobi. After doing this for months, he, like other data labelers, developed insomnia, PTSD, and had trouble having sex.It got to a point where my body couldnt function. Where I saw someone naked, I dont even feel it. And I have a wife, who expects a lot from you, a young family, she expects a lot from you intimately. But you cant, like, do it, Asia said. It fractured a lot of things for me. My body is like, not functioning at all.Asia eventually hit a breaking point and stopped working for AI companies. He is now the secretary general of a Kenyan organization called the Data Labelers Association (DLA) and the author of The Emotional Labor Behind AI Intimacy, a testimony of his time working as the real human labor behind AI sex bots. As part of the DLA, Asia has been working to organize workers to fight for better pay, better mental health services, an end to draconian non-disclosure agreements, and better benefits for a workforce that often earns just a few dollars a day. Data labelers train, refine, and moderate the outputs of AI tools made by the largest companies in the world, yet they are wildly underpaid and havent benefitted from the runaway valuations of AI companies.Last month, the DLA held one of its largest events at the Nairobi Arboretum, sign up new members, and to help them tell their stories. These workers are required to stare at horrific content for many hours straight with few mental health resources, are largely managed by opaque algorithms, and, crucially, are the workers powering the runaway valuations of some of the richest and most powerful companies in the world. You cant understand where youre positioned if you dont understand your history, Angela, one of the days speakers, told the workers who had assembled there (many of the speakers at the event did not give their full names). When you think of colonialism, we were under British Imperial East Africa Company [] so literally, we are working under a company. We are just products, part of their operation. Stakeholders, we can say, but we are at the bottom of the bottom. These multinationals are coming to rule and dominate here, she added. Its a very unfortunate supply chain, and my call today as data labelers is to build up on thisas we are fighting for labor rights, we are also fighting for the environment [] we are fighting big companies. We are fighting the British imperialist companies of today. Its Apple, its Meta, its Gemini. Those are the ones were still fighting. Its a call for solidarity and expanding our thinking beyond what we are doing, beyond our labor. In my few days in Kenya earlier this year, where I was traveling to speak at a conference about AI and journalism, it was immediately clear that data labelers make up a significant portion of the countrys tech workforce. Nearly everyone I spoke to there had either been a data labeler (or a content moderator) themselves or knows someone who has. Leaving the airport in Nairobi, you immediately drive by Sameer Business Park, an office complex that houses Sama, a San Francisco-headquartered data annotation and labeling company that has contracted with Meta, OpenAI, and many other tech giants. Sama has been sued repeatedly for its low pay and the fact that many of its workers suffer PTSD from repetitively looking at graphic content. For years, a giant sign outside its office read: Samasource THE SOUL OF AI. My Uber driver asked why I was going to a random office building in Nairobis Central Business DistrictI told her I was going to interview a data labeler. Oh, I do data labeling too, she said. Michael Geoffrey Asia. Image: Jason KoeblerAsia studied air cargo management in university. He graduated and expected to find a job planning out cargo and baggage routes, but couldnt find a job because he graduated into an industry ravaged by COVID. Around this time, his child was diagnosed with lymphatic cancer, and he took out a loan of about $17,000 USD to pay for his treatments. He needed work, and found data labeling. It wasnt offering good pay, to be honest, Asia told me. It was around $240 US dollars per month. But I felt like I didnt have an option, I had a financial crisis, a sick child.Asia took a job at Sama, where he worked on various Meta projects. Youre given a video and then told to describe the video, or youre given pictures of people and told to identify faces. Youre supposed to draw bounding boxes around the faces and label that. Last week, Swedens Svenska Dagbladet reported that Kenyan data labelers for Sama have been viewing and annotating uncensored footage from Metas AI camera glasses, which has included highly sensitive and violent footage.Asia, through a group of colleagues and friends who called themselves the Brotherhood, eventually found another data labeling job that let him work from home. We were a group of six friends, and everyone had to bring three job opportunities on a weekly basis, he said. I came across another gig that ended up not being a good one, where I had to annotate pornography. At this job, Asia went frame-by-frame in porn videos to annotate what was happening and what type of porn category it could possibly be. Youre supposed to put yourself in the minds of the 8 billion people on Earth, every second of that video. So I may have someone searching for this pornography in Cuba and think these are the tags they can use, if youre searching doggy, you know, that kind of thing, he said. So I worked on pornography for eight hours a day, and I did that project for eight months. His boss at the time was essentially a no-reply email with a link sent each day that gave him his work.At the same time, Asia picked up a second job that started immediately after his shift tagging porn ended, where he was training AI companion bots, though he had no way of knowing which company he was actually working for. He quickly surmised that he was simply taking on the persona of different AI sex bots and was sexting with real people in real time.I could feel the human aspect in the conversations. Most of the people on the other side were lonely people, he said. I would have several profiles and the profiles are switching constantly depending on the needs of the person who pops up on your dashboard. Id be sitting here talking to an old woman who needs love, but if she goes offline, another conversation pops up and then Im responding to a gay person. The two jobs, done back to back, caused him to have insomnia, PTSD, and trouble having sex. Some data labelers, he said, work 18 hours a day. When I met him, he said he had essentially gone three full days without sleep because his body still hasnt readjusted from his messed up schedule.Asia said he eventually was able to get mental health counseling through his childs cancer center, which started because he was the caregiver of a child with cancer but quickly turned into therapy for PTSD related to his job. It was of immense help to me as a person, it was one of the best services Ive ever gotten, because they stood with me, and I said I need a solution to this.We need technology, but it shouldnt come at a human cost. What is so hard with offering mental support to the people working on graphic content? If this job was done in the U.S., would they do what they are doing in Kenya? Would they still give the pay theyre giving here? Here we are paid $.01 per taskit doesnt make sense. Why this discrimination? If they can pay people in the U.S., well that means they can pay people in Kenya, Asia said. Image: Data Labelers AssociationThe message of many data labelers and of the lawyers who have been helping them is that artificial intelligence is not a magical tool built by people in San Francisco making millions of dollars a year and pushing their companies to insane valuations. Artificial intelligence is an extractive technology that relies on the brutal labor of underpaid workers around the world. For years, the work of African data labelers has been more or less ghost work, the unseen, hidden labor that lets American tech companies build their products.AI can never be AI without humans. It is not artificial intelligence. Its African intelligence, Asia said. Most of these are dirty jobs and most of these jobs have been done here in Africa. And then once youre done, once a tool is functional, all the communication stops. You get locked out. We are training our own death. We train ChatGPT and its killing us slowly.Draconian nondisclosure agreements and terms of services that workers cant opt out from have created a culture of fear, and one of DLAs goals is to make it easier for workers to speak out. At the time I met Asia in January, the DLA had 870 members, but its ranks have been growing quickly.Im doing this from a point of experience, not assumption. I have been through this. I know what Im talking about, Asia said. We have this monster called the NDA. The NDA is a slave tool used to enslave people to not speak about what theyre going through. Im very much ready for any legal battle [associated with NDAs] because were not going to keep quiet. This is us suffering, and we cant suffer in silence. This is not the colonial period. I have the right to speak against any violation [of my rights] and thats what Im doing.Mercy Mutemi, a workers rights lawyer who has sued several big tech companies including Meta for how they treat content moderators and data labelers, told me that when something happens in the United Stateswhen a new gadget or product or feature or policy is launched, theres a corresponding reaction in Africa. When something happens in the U.S., theres an African cost to that, she said. Kenya has been pushing for trade deals with the U.S., right? And the direction that conversation is taking is about immunity and protection for big tech. Its like, You want any business with us at all? Well, youve got to get Meta out of these cases.Mutemi has been working on the Meta lawsuit, and on pushing back against NDAs so that workers can more freely talk about their experiences. Tech companies get people in a mental jail where they feel like they cant talk about this. But NDAs are nonsensicalour laws dont recognize these types of NDAs, she said. Theres a way to go about this where its not exploitative.Back at the arboretum in Nairobi, the message to DLAs members is largely that their work is important, that its human, and that they deserve better.Africa is at the bottom of the supply chain of AI. But right now, the fact that we are all here and most of you are data labelersyou are the people who supply the labor. When we think of the whole AI ecosystem, whos an engineer, and maybe thats the image of AI that the majority of the world has, Angela said. And thats actually very intentional. To make [your labor] invisible, to make AI look like this shiny object that no one understands, its very automatic and beautiful and tech. Thats the intentionality of hiding the labor and the behind the scenes of AI.0 Comments 0 Shares 44 Views 0 Reviews -

At some point, in ideal conditions, maybe I would be able to cobble together some feelings about Donald Glover playing a digital dinosaur, but right now Im tiredvery, very tired, said Wisconsin resident Gina Logan, echoing the sentiment of 340 million Americans who felt themselves getting physically weaker at the mere thought of issuing a judgment on whether the Atlanta creator had the right experience and energy to faithfully represent the iconic video game character. Quite frankly, I dont have the mental bandwidth to wonder if the fact that hes Black should make me feel any sort of way. Theres just so much right now. Theres so much, and all I want is to sit down and let it all wash over me. What are we talking about againa dinosaur? Is that it? Sorry, I just Do you ever feel so wiped out that it almost hurts to speak? I think I just need to take a beat for myself. At press time, the entire nation was reportedly sitting with their face in their hands and groaning after being asked what they made of the upcoming musical biopic Michael. The post Exhausted Nation Lacks Strength To Form Opinion On Donald Glover Being Voice Of Yoshi appeared first on The Onion.0 Comments 0 Shares 29 Views 0 Reviews -

APNEWS.COMSmaller portions are a big restaurant trend as customers watch their budgets and waistlinesA ropa vieja dish from Cuba Libre Restaurant and Rum Bar's GLP-Wonderful menu is prepared for serving at the restaurant in Philadelphia, on Friday, March 6, 2026. (AP Photo/Mingson Lau)2026-03-12T15:19:05Z The biggest new restaurant trend is small.Special menus with petite, less expensive portions are popping up all over, from large chains like Olive Garden and The Cheesecake Factory to trendy urban eateries and farm-to-fork dining rooms.Restaurants hope that offering smaller servings beyond the childrens menu will meet many different diners needs. Some people want to spend less when they go out. Others are looking for healthier options or trying to lose weight. Younger consumers tend to snack more throughout the day and eat smaller meals, said Maeve Webster, the president of culinary consulting firm Menu Matters. These are really driven by, I think, changes in the way people are thinking about their relationship with food, the way they spend money on food, what is a good value and whats not, Webster said. Looking for valueBeth Tipton, the co-owner of Daniel Girls Farmhouse Restaurant in Connersville, Indiana, introduced an eight-item Mini Meals menu last fall after several customers requested smaller portions. The menu, which includes daily specials like a half piece of meatloaf with green beans, mashed potatoes and gravy for $8, now accounts for about 20% of the restaurants orders, she said.Older adults make up about half of the restaurants clientele, Tipston said, and some customers told her the regular menu was a stretch for their budgets. As someone who underwent weight-loss surgery, she also knew from experience that many restaurants wont allow adults to order from their childrens menus. We wanted it to be available to all without the word kids meals attached, Tipton said. With the rising costs all around us we wanted to help in any way we can, and this is a great option. Eating out and GLP-1sSome restaurants are adding menus to court users of GLP-1 weight-loss and diabetes drugs like Zepbound, Wegovy, Ozempic and Mounjaro. Last fall, restaurateur Barry Gutin ran into two different friends who told him they were taking GLP-1s and struggling to find restaurant meals that met their dietary needs and smaller appetites. GLP-1 users tend to eat less, so they need nutritionally dense foods that are low in fat and high in protein and fiber. Gutin, the co-owner of Cuba Libre Restaurant and Rum Bar in Philadelphia, Washington, Atlantic City, New Jersey, and Orlando, Florida, reached out to a doctor who specializes in weight loss and to Cuba Libres culinary director, Angel Roque. Over the next month, they developed the chains GLP-Wonderful menu, which is available during dinner. The menu has five classic Cuban options. Roque said the pollo asado on Cuba Libres regular menu has nearly 1,000 calories; on the GLP-1 menu, thats slimmed down to 400 calories, but heavy on protein and fiber. He said it was also important to keep the GLP-1 meals flavorful and colorful, to stimulate appetites. Many times when people are on those kind of regimes, they feel that they cant do the same as everybody else. So we wanted to show them, yes, at Cuba Libre, you can, Roque said.Gutin said the menu has increased business. He estimated that 10 to 20 groups at each location every week have at least one person who requests the GLP-Wonderful menu.People say, Thank you for serving us, Gutin said. Big chains go smallOlive Garden, whose seven-item Lighter Portions menu rolled out nationwide in January, said GLP-1 users were one consideration. The Italian-style restaurant chain also wanted to appeal to patrons pursuing healthier diets or more affordable meals, said Rick Cardenas, the president and CEO of Olive Gardens parent company, Darden Restaurants. There is a consumer group out there that believes in abundance, but abundance is different for everybody, Cardenas said in September during a conference call with investors. So consumers can choose. Were not changing our entire menu to make it a smaller portion. The Asian fusion chain P.F. Changs began offering medium-sized portions last fall. The Cheesecake Factory added smaller, lower-priced Bites and Bowls to its menu last summer, while TGI Fridays recently began testing an Eat Like A Kid menu with smaller portions. A long-term changeSmaller portions arent a new concept. Twenty years ago, small-plate tapas restaurants were all the rage, for instance. But to Webster, the menu consultant, the scaled-down dishes appearing now feel like a longer-term shift. For one thing, the trend is not tied to any particular cuisine. Webster also thinks consumers are thinking more about food waste than they used to, and smaller portions can alleviate some of their concerns.I think it is a core need that consumers have, and a demand that has been lingering under the surface for a long time because restaurant meals, particularly at chains, have become so large, she said. Sure, it sounds great to take leftovers home, but they never taste as good.During a recent visit to Shelburne, Vermont, from his home in North Carolina, Jack Pless was delighted to see the Teeny Tuesday menu at Barkeaters Restaurant, which specializes in locally sourced food. Pless, whos in his 60s and used to own a restaurant, said he cant eat as much as he used to at meals. So many times you go out to restaurants, especially me or my wife, and well take home a box and itll sit in the refrigerator for two, three days and start to grow a beard, he said.Julie Finestone, the co-owner of Barkeaters, said she introduced the Teeny Tuesday menu last month to bring in more weekday business during the winter. She was concerned about the cost of offering lower-priced food options, like $12 reuben sliders, but said the decision has brought in more business than she expected.Finestone said shes pretty confident Teeny Tuesday will become a year-round fixture. Some people, its dietary. Some have smaller appetites. Some people dont like to overindulge in the middle of the week, Finestone said. I think that it just spoke to people.___AP Video Journalists Mingson Lau in Philadelphia and Amanda Swinhart in Shelburne, Vermont, contributed. APNEWS.COMNFL free agency: Panthers, 49ers, Patriots, Jets and Rams are early winnersPhiladelphia Eagles linebacker Jaelan Phillips warms up before an NFL wild-card playoff football game against the San Francisco 49ers on Jan. 11, 2026, in Philadelphia. (AP Photo/Derik Hamilton, file)2026-03-12T14:30:04Z Winning free agency doesnt guarantee success. Its still a good start.NFL teams have committed billions of dollars in free agency, hoping the players theyve added can help them win a Super Bowl. Some of the more aggressive teams the Raiders and Titans would be happy if new players just make them more competitive after futile seasons. There have been several surprises, including a voided blockbuster trade that sent star edge rusher Maxx Crosby back to the Raiders.Heres some early winners and losers:WINNERS: Carolina PanthersThe NFC South champion Panthers added edge rusher Jaelan Phillips ($120 million) and linebacker Devin Lloyd ($45 million), two of the best players available at their positions. Phillips and Lloyd join interior lineman Derrick Brown and cornerback Jaycee Horn to give Carolina top players at each level on defense. The Panthers lost defensive lineman AShawn Robinson, running back Rico Dowdle and center Cade Mays. WINNERS: San Francisco 49ersThe 49ers snagged six-time Pro Bowl receiver Mike Evans from Tampa Bay on a three-year deal that could be worth $60.4 million but only includes $16.3 million guaranteed over one year, according to a person who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the details werent public. San Francisco also acquired defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa from Dallas for a third-round pick; added swing tackle Vederian Lowe and center Brett Toth; and re-signed tight end Jake Tonges and kicker Eddy Piniero. The 32-year-old Evans can still be an elite player in coach Kyle Shanahans system, giving Brock Purdy a top target. The Niners lost wideout Kendrick Bourne. WINNERS: New England PatriotsAn excellent offseason last year helped the Patriots win 10 more games and reach the Super Bowl. Theyve followed up with another strong spending spree, adding wideout Romeo Doubs ($70 million), guard Alijah Vera-Tucker ($42 million), Pro Bowl safety Kevin Byard ($9 million), edge rusher DreMont Jones ($39.5 million), fullback Reggie Gilliam, tight end Julian Hill, safety Mike Brown and linebacker K.J. Britt. They traded center Garrett Bradbury and lost defensive lineman Khyiris Tonga, tight end Austin Hooper and safety Jaylinn Hawkins. WINNERS: New York JetsGeno Smith is back in New York and the Jets strengthened their defense by acquiring veteran safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and defensive lineman TVondre Sweat in other trades and signing two-time Pro Bowl linebacker Demario Davis and edge rusher Joseph Ossai ($34.5 million). They also signed defensive tackle David Onyemata, edge Kingsley Enagbare, safety Dane Belton and cornerback Nashon Wright, giving Aaron Glenn several new players to bolster the defense. Left guard Dylan Parham fills a vacancy on the offensive line and backup tackle Max Mitchell returns. The Jets lost linebacker Quincy Williams, guards Vera-Tucker and John Simpson and kicker Nick Folk. WINNERS: Los Angeles RamsAfter trading for cornerback Trent McDuffie, the Rams signed cornerback Jaylen Watson and re-signed safety Kam Curl to further boost the secondary.Tight end Tyler Higbee returns to provide depth and long snapper Joe Cardona arrives to help on special teams. LOSERS: Tampa Bay BuccaneersThey lost Evans not over money but because he wanted a new challenge and views the 49ers as closer to winning. The defense lost a pair of starters in cornerback Jamel Dean and defensive lineman Logan Hall. The Buccaneers signed Robinson to improve the defensive line, linebacker Alex Anzalone, running back Kenneth Gainwell and backup quarterback Jake Browning.LOSERS: Philadelphia EaglesThe two-time defending NFC East champions make this list because they lost three starters on defense: Phillips, linebacker Nakobe Dean, safety Reed Blankenship. The Eagles signed cornerback Riq Woolen and tight end Johnny Mundt and re-signed tight end Grant Calcaterra. They gave defensive tackle Jordan Davis a contract extension and have to extend several young stars on a defense that dominated Kansas City in the Super Bowl two years ago. Philadelphia cant pay everyone, and general manager Howie Roseman always finds a way to compensate for losing talented players. LOSERS: Jacksonville JaguarsThe AFC South champions lost Lloyd, running back Travis Etienne and cornerback Greg Newsome.Theyve signed backup running back Chris Rodriguez Jr. and retained cornerback Montaric Brown and linebacker Dennis Gardeck. The Jaguars have more work to do in the offseason.___On Football analyzes the biggest topics in the NFL from week to week.
