US-led coalition captures a senior Islamic State member in Syria2025-08-20T12:03:42Z BEIRUT (AP) A U.S.-led coalition captured a senior member of the Islamic State group in northwest Syria on Wednesday, state media and a war monitor reported. It was not immediately clear if the man is the IS supreme leader.Abu Hafs al-Qurayshi, an Iraqi citizen and IS commander, was detained during a pre-dawn operation that included landing troops from helicopters in the town of Atmeh, near the Turkish border. Another Iraqi citizen was killed, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The U.S. military did not respond to a request for comment. The Observatory said the man captured had a French-speaking woman with him, and it was not immediately clear if she was taken by the U.S. force or by Syrian security forces who later cordoned the area. Two years ago, IS announced that a man called Abu Hafs al-Hashemi al-Qurayshi was named as its new leader after Turkish authorities killed his predecessor. Syrian state TV on Wednesday quoted an unnamed security official as saying the Iraqi man targeted in the operation is known as Ali, adding that his real name is Salah Noman. It said Noman was living in an apartment with his wife, son and mother. It said he was killed in the raid. There was no immediate clarification for the difference in names reported by state media and the war monitor.U.N. counter-terrorism chief Vladimir Voronkov told the U.N. Security Council on Wednesday that while multiple leaders of the Islamic State have perished in the past few years, the group has managed to retain its operational capacity. There is no indication that the killing of its deputy leader in charge of operational planning, which resulted from counter-terrorism operations in Iraq in March, will be any different, he said, citing unnamed countries as saying the extremist group may recover from such a loss within six months. Acting U.S. Ambassador Dorothy Shea made no mention of Wednesdays arrest, but said the Trump administration has intensified counter-terrorism operations globally, including targeting the IS, also known as ISIL, and al-Qaidas leadership, infrastructure, and financial networks.IS broke away from al-Qaida more than a decade ago and attracted supporters from around the world after it declared a so-called caliphate in 2014 in large parts of Syria and Iraq. Despite its defeat in Iraq in 2017 and in Syria two years later, IS militants still carry out deadly attacks in both countries and elsewhere.Al-Qurayshi is not the real name of IS leaders but comes from Quraish, the name of the tribe to which Islams Prophet Muhammad belonged. IS claims its leaders hail from the tribe, and al-Qurayshi is part of their nom de guerre. RSShttps://feedx.net https://feedx.site0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 33 Views 0 Anteprima

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMSarah McBride calls out Fox News for being obsessed with her trans identityRep. Sarah McBride (D-DE) called out Fox News for calling her a transgender Democrat in the headline of an article that had nothing to do with her trans identity or LGBTQ+ issues. The Fox article was about her criticism of Donald Trumps attacks on mail-in voting, where she said that he is taking notes from his favorite dictator and that the administration is engaged in an all-out assault not just on free and fair electionsbut on American democracy itself. WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMColorados AG urges Supreme Court to let it keep its ban on conversion therapyColorado Attorney General Phil Weiser filed a brief Tuesday urging the U.S. Supreme Court to let the state keep its ban on conversion therapy for minors in place. The brief is asking the Court to uphold a 10th Circuit Court of Appeals decision that affirmed Colorados 2019 ban.Conversion therapy is widely condemned and once included inducing illness or paralysis, delivering electric shocks, or requiring patients to snap rubber bands on their wrists when experiencing attraction to ones own sex. Today, it most often involves pressuring gay teenagers to pursue opposite-sex relationships or pressuring gender non-conforming youth to suppress their identities. Related The Supreme Court conversion therapy case: Heres what you should know Contemporary practices can also isolate children from their families and communities. During legislative hearings on Colorados conversion therapy ban, one witness testified that he was instructed to embrace his correct gender role by spending time exclusively with men and avoiding contact with his mother and sisters for three years.Under Colorado law, providers who engage in conversion therapy face disciplinary action from their licensing boards. However, Weiser noted that no disciplinary actions have been taken since the law went into effect. Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today The law is being challenged by Colorado Christian counselor Kaley Chiles, who is being represented by the Alliance Defending Freedom, a conservative law firm classified as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center. Chiles is arguing that the ban infringes on her freedom of speech and free exercise of religion. While Chiles has said that she does not seek to cure clients of same-sex attractions or to change clients sexual orientation, she claims that she fears professional discipline if she engages in practices intended to help youth grow in the experience of harmony with ones physical body. Colorado is arguing that Chiles does not have standing to bring the suit because she has not faced any professional discipline and does not engage in any prohibited practices under the law. None of what the therapist is alleging actually appears to violate Colorado law, because she says that shes not trying to change a patients sexual orientation or gender identity, Weiser said.Even if the Supreme Court determines that Chiles has standing to sue, the state contends that the law is constitutional because states have the authority to regulate specific unsafe and ineffective healthcare treatment for public health. Colorados law responded to a growing mental health crisis among Colorados youth to prevent injuryinjury that may not manifest for earsto particularly vulnerable young people, the brief states.Colorado is one of 23 states that ban the harmful practice. While the 9th and 10th Circuits have upheld state bans on conversion therapy, the 11th Circuit has struck down comparable local ordinances in Florida. What is at stake is whether or not the Supreme Court opens up a First Amendment exemption to professional licensing and malpractice systems that are designed to prevent patients from suffering substandard care, and that is the core argument we make in our brief, Weiser said. The Supreme Court has never created such an exemption before. They shouldnt do so now.So-called conversion therapy,is a range of dangerous and discredited practices that falsely claim to change a persons sexual orientation or gender identity or expression, Human Rights Campaign President Kelley Robinson said in a statement. Such practices have been rejected by every mainstream medical and mental health organization for decades, but due to continuing discrimination and societal bias against LGBTQ+ people, some practitioners continue to conduct conversion therapy. The harm of such practices is well-documented.The American Psychiatric Association has opposed conversion therapy since 1998 and reaffirmed its position in 2020, stating that efforts to change an individuals sexual orientation or gender expression have been shown to be harmful and potentially deadly. According to the Williams Institute, lesbian, gay, and bisexual people who undergo conversion therapy are nearly twice as likely to attempt suicide.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 34 Views 0 Anteprima

WWW.PRIDE.COMHow 'Clueless' became the defining film for a micro-generation of queersClueless is a cultural touchstone. A film that is just as accessible today as it was to its audience when it first debuted in 1995. The picture turned 30 (gasp) earlier this summer, yet it still reads as largely timeless three decades on from release. The film made a lasting mark on pop culture, particularly resonating with those of us who saw it for the first time in our adolescence. The film was released at exactly the right time to imprint upon Xennials (a micro-generation including people born between roughly 1977-1983). Accordingly, many Xennials (myself included) consider Clueless the defining film of our often underrepresented generation. After all, its smart, well-written, funny as hell, and even features quality queer representation at a time when that was anything but common. Why does the film mean so much to Xennials? Most generations have multiple touchstone features. Reality Bites and Singles are two that really speak to the Gen X experience, while Mean Girls and Superbad are both widely considered quintessential pictures for Millennials. Xennials, however, are caught between the two, with pieces of our identity firmly rooted in each generation. As such, there aren't a lot of signature movies that we can claim as our own. Whats meaningful about Clueless is that it captures the adolescent experience from the perspective of characters who dont neatly fit into either the Gen X or Millennial classifications. To put it into perspective, terminology for the Xennial generation didnt even exist on paper until Sarah Stankorb wisely coined the term in a 2014 Good Magazine article. Existing in limbo means that Xennials have often felt invisible, a sensation to which many queer folks can also relate. So, it feels special and sacred that Clueless most closely belongs to our generation. Now, to be completely fair, Clueless belongs to everyone who loves the film, not just to us. Yet, it still feels like a significant that the core characters in the picture were born in or around 1980, meaning that the film is most accurately categorized as a Xennial film and what a film it is!Clueless gets just about everything right. The film is hilarious in its depictions of Cher (Alicia Silverstone), a well-meaning teen trying to play matchmaker, and ultimately finding love for herself in the process. The comedy lands; the wardrobe and hairstyles are iconic; the performances and casting are nothing short of perfection; and the pacing and editing are impeccable. Id be hard-pressed to find a flaw within. Not only that, it stands out as a landmark of queer representation. As any queer person who endured the era likely remembers, the 90s werent an easy time for LGBTQ+ folks. The legalization of gay marriage was years away, and there was still quite a bit of misinformation and panic about the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Not only that, it was considered taboo to feature a queer character in mainstream media, let alone a queer character who had an identity outside of their sexual orientation. Clueless is a landmark of quality queer representationFortunately, Amy Heckerling is a trailblazer and an ally. She tackled heavy themes (including abortion) with her breakout feature, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, and it wound up resonating as one of the defining teen films of the 80s. The following decade, she repeated the process with Clueless, this time finding a way to touch on a series of new themes, including the queer experience. She does so with nuance and unwavering positivity. Perhaps not surprisingly, the end result stands as her second decade-defining teen film. Bravo.Even though quality queer representation was exceedingly rare in the mid-1990s, Heckerling found a respectful and inclusive way to feature a gay character in Clueless. She scripts Christian (Justin Walker), who initially presents as Chers would-be love interest, as a gay man who is so much more than a caricature. Sure, he likes to shop and hes a sharp dresser, has a passion for art, and an even deeper appreciation for Tony Curtis films, but there is so much more to him than that. Let us never forget that Christian nearly comes to blows Chers makeover-project-turned-gal-pal, Tai (Brittany Murphy), by dangling her over the railing. Hes multifaceted, far more so than the average queer character in a 90s teen comedy who more often than not was included strictly for comedic purpose or as an object of derision. Even more impressively, Christian never has to have the requisite coming-out conversation with Cher. Theres no dramatic sequence where he opens up about his internal struggle and worries that she will feel differently about him after learning his secret. Moreover, Christian is never painted in a negative light regarding his sexuality. Though Chers best friends boyfriend, Murray (Donald Faison), uses a couple of off-color terms to describe Christian, that has never read as spiteful to me. Murray is a 16-year-old straight teenager in the 90s. I was actually pleasantly surprised that he didnt say far worse. Not to mention, the fact that Cher accepts that Christian is no longer a viable love interest and remains friends with him, and the film just moves on speaks volumes. Heckerling normalizes his queer identity like it is the most innocuous thing on earth. Groundbreaking representation, indeed. All things considered, Clueless remains a standout teen film of the 90s. A portrait of teen culture that has barely aged a day in 30 years. Its been embraced by many as the defining film of the Xennial generation, not to mention, it also features the kind of quality queer representation that has only more recently become commonplace.Perspectives is dedicated to featuring a wide range of inspiring personal stories and impactful opinions from the LGBTQ+ community and its allies. GAYETY.COMTrisha Paytas Just Over The Top Hilariously Spoofed Herself in a Campy New Arbys AdTrisha Paytas is putting her stamp on the fast food world, again, this time with a hilarious, self-referential ad campaign for Arbys that blends nostalgia, camp, and internet virality. In the latest installment of Arbys increasingly quirky digital ad series, the longtime YouTuber and viral meme queen stars in a spoof that reimagines one of her most iconic online moments: the huh what? oh haha okay clip originally filmed at a drive-thru and shared with millions of her fans. Now, Paytas is revisiting that moment for Arbys, turning a simple mix-up into a comedically unhinged naming-rights claim on one of the brands most beloved offerings: the Jamocha Shake. In the ad, created by LGBTQ+ owned and operated creative agency Juxtapose Studio, Paytas is seen sitting with her co-star, actor and creator Vinita Khilnani, trying to dream up the perfect name for the frosty, chocolatey beverage shes sipping. When Khilnani reminds her the drink already has a name, and has had it since the 1970s, Paytas pauses, stares into space, and delivers a perfectly timed, deadpan version of her meme: Huh what? Oh haha okay. Seconds later, she beams, boldly announcing, We should call it Jamocha, taking full credit as if shed just invented the name on the spot. The absurdity is peak Trisha, and thats exactly the point. This is just the latest in Arbys growing strategy to tap into highly niche internet subcultures and leverage meme-worthy moments in its marketing, a move thats not only resonating with Gen Z and millennial audiences, but is also rewriting the rules of fast-food advertising. And theyre doing it with heart, humor, and a strong DEI lens.Earlier this year, Arbys partnered with viral pop singer Rebecca Black, yes, of Friday fame, for a late-night snack campaign that poked fun at the very video that made her famous. In it, Black embraces the cringe and cool of internet stardom, promoting Arbys curly fries while reclaiming her narrative as a modern queer pop icon.Another campaign saw Love Island UK fan favorites Taylor and Clarke team up with the brand in a cheeky spot that played with romance tropes and fashion clichs, all while plugging Arbys mozzarella sticks in slow-motion, wind-blown glory. Trisha, who has long cultivated a persona that sits at the chaotic intersection of pop culture, camp, and self-parody, is the perfect choice for the campaign. Not only is she a real-life Arbys enthusiast, shes posted dozens of videos gushing over their food for years, but she also brings a uniquely post-ironic sensibility to the table. Her involvement adds authenticity to what couldve been just another influencer marketing play. And, naturally, she adds her own chaotic lore to the ad.As she stares lovingly into the cup of Jamocha shake, Trisha declares that the name sounds like something one of [her] children would be named. A clear nod to the online theory-slash-joke-slash-meme that her children are reincarnations of iconic figures like Queen Elizabeth II, the Pope, and Ozzy Osbourne. Most recently, she gave birth to a baby she nicknamed Aquaman. So, Jamocha might not be far off.In an age where many influencers walk a fine line between cringe and clever, Trisha leans into both with full abandon. And Arbys leans with her.The success of these campaigns speaks to a broader shift in how brands approach advertising in a post-algorithmic world. Gone are the days of generic commercials and bland celebrity endorsements. Instead, companies like Arbys are investing in campaigns that feel personal, weird, and above all, true to the internet. It doesnt feel like selling out when the story is this aligned, said a representative from Juxtapose Studio. When the talent, the tone, and the product all live in the same cultural space, its not a hard sell, its a celebration. At the center of this celebration is the idea that a brand like Arbys can be iconic in its own right, just like the creators it partners with. And through that shared iconography, whether its a shake thats been around for decades or a YouTuber who turned internet chaos into career longevity, you dont need to reinvent the wheel. Sometimes, you just need to say: Huh what? Oh haha okay. Then take the credit. The Jamocha Shake is available now at Arbys nationwide. And no, Trisha didnt really name it, but she absolutely owns it.Source0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 33 Views 0 Anteprima

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMTERF author complains after fellow queer authors protest his nomination in LGBTQ+ book awardsTransphobic gay author John Boyne is complaining about being cancelled in a column that he recently published on The Telegraph, a U.K. publication with over 2.3 million daily readers. Boynes book Earth was nominated for the Polari Prize, the U.K.s leading LGBTQ+ book award. However, 10 other nominees withdrew in protest of Boynes past transphobic comments. On July 26, The Irish Independentpublished an article in which Boyne celebrated the 60th birthday of his friend, transphobic billionaire J.K. Rowling. Rowling is the famed author of the Harry Potter fantasy book series, who has used her wealth to finance court cases that have resulted in the rollback of trans civil rights across the U.K. Related JK Rowling says to photograph women in toilets just in case theyre transgender In the article, Boyle referred to himself as a fellowTERF (atransgender-exclusionary radical feminist), and said women who support trans rights are complicit in their own erasure and ready to pin down a handmaiden as her husband rapes her (a reference to woman-assisted sexual assault in the dystopian TV seriesThe Handmaids Tale).Boyne has called trans women men, claimed that theyre stealing opportunities from female students and athletes (even though the actual number of trans competitors remains incredibly small), called gender-affirming care experimentation (even though most major medical associations have considered the care safe and essential for decades), and claimed that the people criticizing Rowlings transphobia are undersexed and middle-aged straight men, indoctrinated young people who fail to recognize actual misogyny and homophobia, and grown women who dont know any better. Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today After 10 authors withdrew their nominations and numerous social media commenters questioned why an LGBTQ+ literary award would include an anti-trans writer, the Polari Prize initially issued a statement on August 7. It said in part, We do not eliminate books based on the wider views of a writer, we regret the upset and hurt this has caused, adding, We can at times hold radically different positions on substantive issues. However, after continued public backlash, the Polari Prize announced on August 18 that it would pause its 2025 award. The announcement reiterated the prizes commitment to inclusion and condemnation of all forms of transphobia. What was supposed to be a celebration of exceptional LGBTQ+ literature has been overshadowed by hurt and anger, which has been painful and distressing for all concerned, and we apologize to everyone who has been affected, the statement said. The awards organizers also promised to increase representation of trans and gender non-conforming judges on its panels and to undertake a governance and management review. We will also explore discussions about the tensions between the claims of freedom of expression and the need to create inclusive and supportive spaces in a world hostile to our trans community members and our community at large, the award organizers added. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Polari Prize (@polariprize) Boyne reacted to the entire incident by publishing the aforementioned opinion column in The Telegraph. In it, he claimed he was unaware his book was nominated until he learned that a transgender judge on the Polari Prize panel had resigned due to his books inclusion. He also wrote that he invited the judges to release Earth from any further consideration should those who left, return to participate in the awards. My olive branch was rejected, however, and a petition begun to have me exiled to Elba [the island that French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte was famously exiled to], which supposedly garnered 821 signatures, Boyne wrote. For a time, I called it the Loch Ness Monster of petitions everyone had heard of it, but no one had actually seen it but then, at last, I managed to procure a copy and realized why it had never, in fact, seen the light of day. To be polite, it lacked a certain name recognition factor. He said that the Polari Prizes most recent announcement worries him. It suggests that gays and lesbians who do not conform to a specific gender ideology will be rooted out and excluded from future consideration, the court effectively stacked against them in this obsessive need to amplify the voices of trans people, a strange fixation, he wrote. Its worth considering how this new emphasis might damage younger LGB writers and their right to both hold and express perfectly valid, entirely legal opinions on any subject, he wrote, adding that he never considered withdrawing his own book because to have done so would have endorsed a mob mentality, and ensured that future nominees would have their past publications and social media posts vetted by their colleagues for wrongthink and for anything that went against the orthodoxy. This, he wrote, would amount to the death of ideas brought about by raging tantrums of people who, I suspect, have not read anything with more than 280 characters for many years, a reference to people who spent most of their time on X and other microblogging platforms, where he received much criticism. He also said that, while he doesnt feel any ill will towards the authors who withdrew their own nominations, I do think they should reflect on how they would like to be treated should their names ever be maligned, their characters misrepresented, or their words twisted out of all context. We operate in the books world. Were supposed to believe in free speech and freedom of thought, he concluded. Were meant to treat each other with respect, not look for ways to tear each other down. To value the written word and not denigrate, insult, and push people to a point where those who are emotionally vulnerable might not survive their attacks. Most of us have the maturity to understand that, but its clear that some, particularly those at the start of their careers, still have to learn it.Studies suggest thatmore than 40% of transgender adultsin the U.S. have attempted suicide in their lifetime, and 30% of trans youth have attempted suicide in the past year, according to the National Institutes of Health. Psychologists say that trans peoples elevated suicidality primarily results from the violence and harassment they face from a disapproving public. J.K. Rowling uses her fortune to fund anti-trans legal attacksRowling has used her vast wealth, mostly accumulated through the success of herHarry Potterfranchise and its many multimedia spinoffs, to personally fund legal cases aimed at diminishing rights and protections for transgender women in the U.K. and Ireland.A spokesperson for Rowling confirmed that the authors JK Rowling Womens Fund (JKRWF) has been quietly operating since late 2024, managing her ongoing financial support for legal cases involving womens and girls sex-based rights. The fund is just her latest effort to end trans womens rights in the U.K. In February 2024, she pledged 70,000 (about $89,000) to For Women Scotland (FWS), the anti-trans organization behind the legal challenge that resulted inthe U.K. Supreme Courts rulingthat excluded trans women from the countrys law prohibiting sex-based discrimination.HBO is currently producing aHarry Potterreboot to which Rowling will serve as an executive producer.Casey Bloys, HBOs gay CEO, has repeatedly dismissedconcerns about her toxic transphobia, saying that Rowling is entitled to her personal political views.According toThe Guardian, theHarry Potterfranchise is worth an estimated $25 billion. WWW.PRIDE.COMWest Texas A&M University's drag show ban blocked by appeals courtWest Texas A&M University's drag show ban has finally been blocked by an appeals court after a two years-long legal battle. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit overturned a district court ruling on Monday, finding that university president Walter Wendler's unilateral cancellation of a campus drag show hosted by LGBTQ+ student organization Spectrum WT to raise money for suicide prevention was unconstitutional. Because theatrical performances plainly involve expressive conduct within the protection of the First Amendment, we find the plaintiffs drag show is protected expression, discrimination among such shows must pass strict scrutiny," the court wrote in its opinion. "President Wendler did not argue, either before the district court or on appeal, that restricting the intended drag show would survive strict scrutiny. Based on the record before us, the district court erred in concluding that the plaintiffs were not substantially likely to succeed on the merits of their First Amendment claim."Wendler single-handedly made the decision to cancel the event, which was originally scheduled at an on-campus facility on March 22, 2023, announcing in an email to students and staff that West Texas A&M University will not host a drag show on campus. In the message, which contained the subject line A Harmless Drag Show? No Such Thing," Wendler stated that humans are created in the image of God" and that drag shows supposedly do not preserve a single thread of human dignity." As a performance exaggerating aspects of womanhood (sexuality, femininity, gender), drag shows stereotype women in cartoon-like extremes for the amusement of others and discriminate against womanhood," he wrote. The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) filed a lawsuit on behalf of Spectrum WT against Wendler and the university, accusing them of violating their freedom of speech. The case escalated to the U.S. Supreme Court, which opted not to intervene in March of last year, leaving in place the district court's ruling that effectively upheld the ban. The appeals court ruling overturns this, allowing for future events to take place. FIRE is pleased that the Fifth Circuit has halted President Wendlers unconstitutional censorship and restored the First Amendment at West Texas A&M, FIRE Supervising Senior Attorney, JT Morris, said in a statement. This is a victory not just for Spectrum WT, but for any public university students at risk of being silenced by campus censors.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 36 Views 0 Anteprima

WWW.PRIDE.COMKATSEYE's new denim ad shows Sydney Sweeney how it's doneKATSEYE, the gnarly girl group currently taking over the world, just appeared in a gorgeous new jeans ad from Gap.The six girls, Daniela, Lara, Manon, Megan, Sophia, and Yoonchae, all appear in the new ad decked out in denim, and they dance to "Milkshake" by Kelis. The choreography is certainly an homage to Gap's incredible choreographed ads over the years, while also including references to KATSEYE's own iconic dances like "Gnarly" and "Debut." Each girl gets a moment to shine in their adorable denim outfits. "Better in Denim," the ad concludes."This is denim as you define it," reads the social media caption. "Your individuality. Your self-expression. Your style. Powerful on your own. Even better together."KATSEYE also shared what the ad meant to them. "We each come from different parts of the world, with unique cultures, languages, and stories," they said in a statement. "Its the heart of what makes our sound, style, and presence stand out."Each of the six girls hails from a distinct ethnicity. Daniela, Lara, and Megan are all American, while Sophia is from the Phillipines, Manon is from Switzerland, and Yoonchae is from South Korea. KATSEYE is certainly on a roll, as the major advertisement comes just a couple of weeks after their instantly iconic performance at Lollapalooza in Chicago, where they drew one of the biggest daytime crowds ever. The moment is also freshly off the heels of Sydney Sweeney's controversial denim advertisement for American Eagle, which was recently slammed for its play on words with "jeans" and "genes" that some called a eugenics dog whistle."Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality, and even eye color," Sweeney said in the now viral ad that she appeared in by herself. "My jeans are blue."Following the political hailstorm that ad caused, Gap's inclusive, uplifting, and fun take on denim is certainly refreshing and KATSEYE, which even includes LGBTQ+ members, is the perfect group to embody that energy.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 34 Views 0 Anteprima
