Reds place Graham Ashcraft on 60-day IL with UCL strain
NEW YORK, NEW YORK - MAY 25: Tyler Stephenson #37 and Graham Ashcraft #23 of the Cincinnati Reds celebrate after the game against the New York Mets at Citi Field on May 25, 2026 in the Queens borough of New York City. (Photo by Ishika Samant/Getty Images) | Getty Images The blows to the Cincinnati Reds bullpen keep right on coming. On Friday, somewhat out of the blue, the Reds placed Graham Ashcraft on the injured list with what’s being called a “UCL sprain right forearm,” and they didn’t just place him on the 15-day IL, either. Ashcraft went straight to the 60-day IL, a move that’s both ominous and potentially an indication that we’ve seen the last of Graham for the 2026 season (and maybe longer). The Reds announced the move on Friday afternoon, noting that they had selected the contract of Yunior Marte from AAA Louisville in a corresponding move. The #Reds today announced the following transactions: pic.twitter.com/zkQEo4B1Zy— Cincinnati Reds (@Reds) May 29, 2026Ashcraft was a key cog in the bullpen prior to the hamstring injury that landed Emilio Pagan on the 60-day IL himself, but had assumed a much higher importance in the wake of said injury. His last trio of outings had also been rock solid, and he was beginning to be looked upon as a legitimate closing option as the team attempts to manage Pagan’s absence. Now, though, the Reds must figure out how to reconfigure their bullpen once again, while we all wait and see the severity of the injury. I’m not going to bring up the guy whose medical procedure has been named after him, but it’s hard not to go right to that with your mind the moment you hear that there’s damage to a UCL.Get well soon, Doug.

Caddie Austin Gaugert gets new opportunity after controversial split
PGA veteran caddie Austin Gaugert, who was dismissed after a costly two-stroke penalty by his former player Garrick Higgo at the first round of the PGA Championship, has quickly bounced back with a new opportunity.Gaugert will assume caddying duties for Dylan Wu during the opening round of the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial Country Club this weekend. The swift transition follows reports that Gaugert, in a frantic effort to get Higgo on the tee as the first round of the PGA Championship began, was unable to prevent a late arrival that resulted in a two-stroke penalty for the player. The penalty ultimately contributed to Higgo missing the cut at Aronimink, prompting a professional split. In a candid social media post, Gaugert publicly acknowledged his role in the unfortunate incident and accepted full responsibility for the miscommunication that led to Higgo’s penalty."As a caddie, you try to do everything you can to prepare your player for competition and I fell short of that.Garrick was understanding throughout the situation and handled it with professionalism and class. This has happened to players before and will again. Garrick handled this difficult situation with grace, and I wish him nothing but success moving forward. After working with Garrick and finding the highest success in caddying, Garrick has become a better friend to me than just a boss. I will always be grateful for that."Garrick Higgo's former caddie Austin Gaugert posted a statement on Instagram (via @golfweek): "As a caddie, you try to do everything you can to prepare your player for competition and I fell short of that.Garrick was understanding throughout the situation and handled it with… pic.twitter.com/XWRviFmuxg— Underdog Golf (@UnderdogGolf) May 20, 2026

Matthew Stafford thinks he and Davante Adams can take things to 'another level'
Matthew Stafford and Davante Adams teamed up for the first time last season after the Los Angeles Rams signed the veteran receiver in free agency. Needless to say, things went well.Adams led the NFL with 14 touchdown receptions in only 14 games, catching 60 passes for 789 yards in his first year with the Rams. After considering trading Adams away this offseason, the Rams opted to keep him for another season and expectations for his connection with Stafford are even higher.Stafford is excited to run it back with Adams in 2026 and believes they can take things to another level.“I'm excited. Obviously, had a really good first season with him,” Stafford said. “He was ultra-productive, ton of touchdowns, bunch of yards and catches, and I think there's even another level to it for myself and for him. So, just excited to continue to get those reps and that understanding. I feel really lucky to play with a player like Davante that has done it at a high level for such a long time. I don't take that for granted. He’s a special player, special human being.”Stafford missed all of training camp last year with a back injury, which hurt his chemistry with Adams once the season began. They did work together in OTAs and in practice just before Week 1, but assuming both stay healthy this summer, they should start the year even better in 2026.Plus, they have a full season as teammates under their belts now, so they won’t be as unfamiliar with each other this time around. It’s not unreasonable to think Adams could lead the league in touchdown receptions again in 2026, and his yardage numbers could experience an uptick from the 789 he had last season, too – though the Rams' reliance on 13-personnel could limit his playing time slightly. This article originally appeared on Rams Wire: Rams QB Matthew Stafford excited to keep playing with Davante Adams

Antonee Robinson relieved to be back with USMNT after knee surgery
Antonee Robinson was fearful that his place on the United States World Cup roster was in jeopardy following knee surgery last May. He missed the fall international camps as well as several months for Fulham, but has recovered his form enough to be part of Mauricio Pochettino's 26-man squad announced."Overall, I've been doing so much off the pitch to try and get myself right for the summer," Robinson told The Cooligans earlier this month. "It killed me that I played 50 games for the States and then missed about a year-and-a-half playing with the boys. Having to watch us, whether we won or loss, it was killing me not being there. Last camp [in March], was a massive relief for me to be back in the team and then be able to put the jersey on."Play 2026 Soccer Pick 'Em with FOX One and make your picks for the world's biggest soccer tournamentThe 28-year-old wing-back is a veteran in this U.S. group. He made his senior team debut in 2018 and has appeared 52 times with the national team. There has a been a lot of change over the past decade, but what has stayed within the program is ready to be put on display during this summer’s World Cup."It's hard to describe what it means to see how far we've come because I've been through so much," Robinson said. "I've seen a lot of players come and go. Thankfully for me I came at a time where a lot of young boys were given an opportunity and there's still a lot of the same people who were there on my debut. It's a great feeling. I feel like we've developed a lot. Christos Tzolis: Club Brugge wizard urged to join Man United
Christos Tzolis: Club Brugge wizard urged to join Man UnitedChristos Tzolis has been urged to sign for Manchester United amid growing interest from the Premier League in the Club Brugge winger. On United’s RadarTzolis, 24, has enjoyed a stunning season in Belgium, racking up 22 goals and 29 assists in all competitions for the Blue and Blacks. Of these, 23 assists have come specifically in the Jupiler Pro League, meaning the Greece international has registered more than United’s record-breaking captain, Bruno Fernandes.Tzolis is primarily a left-winger, which explains the admiration from Old Trafford, though he is capable of playing across the entire frontline.United are understood to be targeting a left-sided forward, with RB Leipzig speedster Yan Diomande and Aston Villa talisman Morgan Rogers among the leading targets. Moves for either option will cost up to £100 million, however, forcing the Red Devils to consider cheaper alternatives.Club Brugge do not want to lose their prized asset this summer, but there is growing acceptance of a departure given Europe’s biggest clubs are starting to show interest. A report relayed by The Peoples Person revealed the Belgian champions will demand a club-record fee, which is currently held by Ardon Jashari, who joined AC Milan for €36m (£31.2m) last summer.United are joined in the hunt by Arsenal, Aston Villa and Chelsea, while Serie A giants Juventus are also said to be exploring a deal. Even if the fee were to surpass Jashari’s, it would still be around a third of the price INEOS have been quoted for Diomande or Rogers.“That level suits him”Interestingly, Tzolis was asked directly about the interest in him from England’s elite by DAZN, with the winger pouring fuel on the fire of a big-money switch to M16 this summer.“United could convince me. Such a massive club with so much history. It would be hard to say no to that,” he said with a rueful smile, while ruling out an option like Crystal Palace. This prospect has now received further backing, with Belgian manager Hein Vanhaezebrouck describing a move to Old Trafford as an “excellent step” for Tzolis’ fledgling career.“I hope he ends up in the Premier League. That level suits him,” the 62-year-old states. “Clubs like Arsenal, Manchester United, and certainly Liverpool would be an excellent step.”Final ThoughtsINEOS certainly reaped the rewards of recruiting a highly-rated Belgian last summer, with Senne Lammens proving revelatory after his £18.1m capture from Royal Antwerp to bring stability between the sticks for United.Senne Lammens Stats: 2025/26 SeasonSource: Transfermarkt. The 23-year-old goalkeeper was voted the signing of the season by The Athletic, proving the transition from the Jupiler Pro League to the Premier League is a jump that can be made successfully. Perhaps United will choose to dip back into that market for Belgium’s next outstanding product, even if this time there is a Mediterranean twist.Featured image Alex Bierens de Haan via Getty Imagesonline pollsThe Peoples Person has been one of the world’s leading Man United news sites for over a decade. Why Michael Hage didn't sign to play for Canadiens in playoffs
Why Michael Hage didn't sign to play for Canadiens in playoffs originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.Michael Hage could be playing for the Montreal Canadiens right now.Instead, he chose after his college season at Michigan ended that he'd be returning for another NCAA season with the Wolverines. With the Habs up against it in the Eastern Conference Final, the question is circulating about why Hage chose to do that:Can someone explain why Michael Hage didn’t sign in Montreal? Had 52 points at Michigan and would CLEARLY be Montreal’s 2C right now behind Suzuki but felt the need to go back to school?— World Hockey Report (@worldhockeyrpt) May 29, 2026While none of this is simple, it's not totally shocking that Hage chose the path he did.MORE: Mitch Marner is making the Maple Leafs miserableWhy didn't Michael Hage sign with the Canadiens?Because Hage can still join the Habs next season, it's not shocking that he chose another college campaign first.A loss in the Frozen Four had to have been painful, and he'd surely like to lead Michigan to a national championship instead. It's easy to argue that a Stanley Cup should matter more, but that's a harder case to make when a player's most immediate high-end pursuit was a different trophy. It probably didn't feel that way in the moment for Hage. It's also not as cut and dry as the post above suggests. Hage would've had to adjust to the NHL level, and it's not clear that would've been immediate. Some players fit in better than others. In reality, Hage had two good choices, and he picked one of them. It's just not the one that had the potential to help Montreal right now.More NHL news:Henrik Sedin's son is excelling in a different sportElias Petersson trade plans may be missing a key pointWould the Maple Leafs trade Easton Cowan?Alex Ovechkin's mom is playing a role in his retirement decisionPenguins have $42.5 million lack of excuse for letting Evgeni Malkin leave

How this cabaret performer’s musical idol helped her come out

Related Husbands Richard & Chris recreate a romantic moment each year at Pride Frances Faye is Genecco’s musical idol. Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Faye, a Brooklyn-born, Jewish American cabaret singer, had a rich career interpreting the Great American Songbook, from her start as a teenager on the nightclub circuit in the 1930s, through headlining acts in New York, Las Vegas, Miami, and Los Angeles into the 1980’s. Along the way, she recorded for all the major labels, was a prolific songwriter (“Well All Right” is her tune), and not so incongruously played an opium-smoking madam in French director Louis Malle’s Pretty Baby. And she was gay. Genecco discovered Faye when a judge at a cabaret competition told her she reminded him of the dishy, jazz-inflected vocalist. “I went out and bought the only CD I could find at the time, her live album ‘Caught in the Act’ from the Crescendo Nightclub in Hollywood. And I fell in love sitting in my car. That was it.” Genecco pulled a band together, and a new act: “Drunk With Love: A Tribute To Frances Faye!” That San Francisco Pride performance was one of the singer’s biggest dates with the show. “’Drunk With Love’ was written by Bruz Fletcher,” Genecco explains. “Frances had known Bruz personally and performed his song throughout her seven-decade career in his honor. He was gay in 1950s Los Angeles, ran a club constantly raided by the cops, and shot himself at 35 because of depression. That song carries a lot of weight.” Faye, whose sexuality was an open secret among diehard fans and industry insiders, was known for littering her shows with saucy asides and double-entendres. “Faye was a genius at double entendre,” Genecco says. Take “The Man I Love.” “She’d sing the lyric ‘make him stay,’ but just land on ‘make him…’ and let it hang there. The audience who were in the know absolutely lost their minds. The ones who weren’t just heard a great singer having fun.” That moment on “Caught in the Act” is followed by Faye adding dryly between lyrics, “I think when you’re pretty, it does matter how you wear your hair.” The singer works her manager and longtime partner Teri Shepard into the song later, with a scat and manic bongos filling the line, “Maybe Tuesday will be Teri! Teri! day.” Faye is clearly having a ball. “Here’s the thing, though,” Genecco adds with a plot twist: “I wasn’t out when I started working on her tribute show.” The disconnect was awkward and uncomfortable for the singer and audience both, she says. “It just wasn’t working.” Then Faye led Genecco out of the closet. “At the Octavia Lounge down Market Street from the Castro, the room was filled with gay guys, and it suddenly seemed ludicrous to me that I would hide my sexuality from them. So I didn’t. I came out on stage during a show. It was the most joyous experience of my life.” Now Genecco was embracing the qualities that made Faye a legend among her fans, standing on the same side of the stage as her idol. “She was bold, brave, and completely subversive. And she did it all with such joy.” Two favorite examples between songs: “’Should I strip or should I sing? I’d rather strip. I think it’s such a ball,’ And: ‘If you ever saw me offstage, you’d kill yourself. You’d never get high again.'” “She told a story about Robert Mitchum calling her from jail, asking her to bail him out — on a pot charge. And then there was ‘Frances and Her Friends,’ a song that paired up same-sex couples way before that was allowed on stage, or anywhere.” Faye herself was arrested in 1955 on a narcotics charge in LA, accused of carrying weed with three other musicians. “She could hang with mobsters and lovely ladies from behind the same piano,” Genecco says with admiration. “Faye taught me that a live performance is a conversation, not a recital. Her recordings are master classes in reading a room, in timing, in the art of the setup. The way she’d take a familiar lyric and just leave something out and let the audience finish it themselves — that’s a whole education in a single held breath.” “Whatever the song, whatever the era, whatever the social mores of the moment,” Genecco says, “it always came out filtered through something that was entirely, unmistakably Frances Faye.” Subscribe to the LGBTQ Nation newsletter and be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

River Ryan Unstoppable Since Return From Hamstring Injury
Los Angeles Dodgers No. 6 prospect River Ryan has made three starts since returning from a hamstring injury, and looks more than ready for an MLB return. He has incrementally ramped up in innings pitched since coming back from the injured list, throwing four innings in his return start, followed by a five-inning outing and a six-inning outing. He has allowed just one earned run during that 15 inning stretch, coming in his first start back. That start came against the Albuquerque Isotopes, who he only allowed two hits to. He also had four strikeouts in that outing. His next start came against the Reno Aces, and he allowed two runs once again while holding his opponents scoreless and notching seven strikeouts. His start Saturday is by far the most impressive, as he posted six innings with eight strikeouts while only allowing one unearned run.Ryan’s resurgence in Triple-A is expected, as his spring training foreshadowed a strong campaign from the 27-year-oldDuring spring training, Ryan had a 1.86 ERA through 9.2 innings pitched, and struck out 12 batters in the process.Feb 14, 2026; Glendale, AZ, USA; Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher River Ryan throws bullpen during spring training camp. Mandatory Credit: Rick Scuteri-Imagn ImagesHow Has River Ryan Performed in MLB?Ryan made his MLB debut in 2024, though only made four starts before landing on the injured list and undergoing Tommy John surgery.Through those four starts, though, he showed plenty of promise. He threw 20.1 innings during that stretch, allowing just three earned runs for a 1.33 ERA and striking out 18 batters. His best outing of the bunch came against the Houston Astros on the road, when he struck out eight batters through 5.2 innings pitched and earned his first MLB win.Aug 4, 2024; Oakland, California, USA; Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher River Ryan (77) throws a pitch against the Oakland Athletics during the fourth inning at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum. Mandatory Credit: Darren Yamashita-USA TODAY SportsWould River Ryan Be a Starter for the Dodgers if He Came Up?Ryan would certainly be a starter for the Dodgers if they called him to MLB, as their rotation’s depth is rather thin at the moment. Tyler Glasnow and Blake Snell both reside on the injured list at the moment, and will be out for a while longer.Additionally, Ryan prefers the starting role.“Personally, I think being a starter and coming out — having a whole prep routine before I get on the mound — is much better for my body, especially coming off of surgery,” Ryan said during spring training. “Not really getting any throws before I try to warm up in the bullpen doesn’t feel all that great. But it’s manageable, and I’m feeling good now.”If he came up to the majors, Ryan would likely displace either Eric Lauer or Emmet Sheehan, moving them to the bullpen.Do you think it’s River Ryan’s time to return to MLB?

Arsenal Are Confident About Recruiting This Leicester City Winger: One For The Future?
Arsenal Are Confident About Recruiting This Leicester City Winger: One For The Future? In a recent report, journalist Graeme Bailey mentioned that Arsenal are confident about recruiting Leicester City winger Jeremy Monga. It has been claimed that the Gunners would have to rival Manchester United in the race to land the gifted wide player in this summer transfer period.Monga’s Impressive Rise In English FootballThe 16-year-old has managed to shine at times with his performances on the left side of Leicester’s attack this season. Monga has scored one goal and grabbed a couple of assists in 30 matches for the Foxes in this campaign in all competitions. The English prospect is currently among the most gifted young wingers in the EFL Championship. Therefore, it is no surprise that the Gunners are hoping to land him in this summer transfer window.Monga is yet to pen a professional contract with Leicester, which could open the door for Arsenal to sign him this off-season. However, he is still quite raw and would need time to prove his worth at the North London club.LEICESTER, ENGLAND – SEPTEMBER 30: Jeremy Monga of Leicester City during the Sky Bet Championship match between Leicester City and Wrexham AFC at The King Power Stadium on September 30, 2025 in Leicester, England. (Photo by Michael Regan/Getty Images)Arsenal Are Confident About Recruiting Monga: Is He A Prospect For The Future?Monga is a good dribbler with the ball at his feet and can make some driving runs with it out in the wide areas. He can create the odd chance for his teammates to find the back of the net and can generate some power with his shot attempts. The English youngster is primarily a left-winger but can also serve as a right-sided wide player if told to do so. However, Monga is still quite inexperienced at the highest level and would need some time to adjust to life at Arsenal. We can expect Monga to improve the quality of Mikel Arteta’s frontline in the long run. He is already good enough to serve as a good rotational piece in the North London club’s squad. At 16, Monga has the potential to be a generational talent in the Premier League, which makes him a great signing for the Gunners to pursue in the long run. He will even help the London club compete across all fronts in the coming years. Therefore, Arteta should focus on trying everything in his power to lure him to the Emirates Stadium this summer as he is undoubtedly a prospect to watch out for in the future.

Blue Origin investigates rocket explosion as public is warned about possible wreckage washing ashore
A Blue Origin New Glenn rocket explodes during an engine-firing test on Thursday, May 28, 2026, in Cape Canaveral, Fla. (@JConcilus via AP)2026-05-29T15:38:18Z CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin is assessing damage to its launch pad after a rocket exploded during a test firing, creating a giant orange fireball seen and felt for miles around. The company fueled the hulking New Glenn rocket Thursday night, hoping to briefly ignite the engines ahead of a satellite launch next week. But the 321-foot (98-meter), rocket blew up, taking part of the pad with it. Aerial views on Friday revealed heaps of crumpled structures on the ground, with just one tower and the water tank still standing. Emergency officials warned the public to avoid any wreckage that might wash ashore and to instead call 911. There were no reported deaths or injuries. It’s a major setback for Blue Origin, coming just one month after the entire New Glenn fleet was grounded because of an upper-stage engine issue that dumped a satellite in the wrong orbit. Named after John Glenn, the first American in orbit, New Glenn is the rocket that Blue Origin plans to use to launch landers to the moon under NASA’s Artemis program that aims to build a sprawling base near the moon’s south pole. The goal is to land the first Artemis moonwalkers as early as 2028. Earlier this week, the space agency awarded a new contract to Blue Origin worth hundreds of millions of dollars. One of the biggest rockets to reach orbit, New Glenn has seven first-stage engines fueled by liquid oxygen and liquefied natural gas, which is essentially methane. It has flown three times. Read More None of the assigned 48 Amazon Leo satellites were on board the newest rocket when the blast occurred. Another batch of Amazon Leo satellites — competing with SpaceX’s Starlinks to provide internet service to remote locales — awaited liftoff several miles away at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, courtesy of United Launch Alliance’s Atlas V rocket.Within 12 hours of the explosion, SpaceX launched more Starlinks to orbit Friday morning. CEO Elon Musk has two Florida pads in action, one on the Space Force side where the latest Falcon 9 lifted off and the other at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. Blue Origin has just one Florida pad: Launch Complex 36 dating back to the early 1960s. NASA’s Mariner and Pioneer interplanetary probes rocketed away from there, as well as the moon-bound Rangers and Surveyors. The Washington state-based Blue Origin spent more than $1 billion rebuilding the launch complex — taking it from double pads to a single — after leasing it from the Air Force in 2015.The company’s smaller New Shepard rockets soar from Texas, skimming space for a few minutes with tourists and science experiments. Those suborbital hops were paused in January so the company could focus on New Glenn and upcoming moonshots. All that is now on hold, pending the investigation into the explosion.NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman said late Thursday that the space agency will evaluate near-term impacts to the Artemis program, which saw four astronauts fly around the moon in April. That Artemis II mission was hoisted by NASA’s Space Launch System rocket. Before the explosion, Blue Origin was on track to launch a prototype lunar lander to the moon on a New Glenn this fall, with another lander due to rocket into orbit around Earth in 2027 for docking practice by the soon-to-be-announced Artemis III crew. 📊The first-half review: which Argentine giant fared best?
📊The first-half review: which Argentine giant fared best? With the first half of 2026 now concluded, Argentine football pauses to assess the performance of its five most decorated institutions. Between early eliminations, footballing crises, and campaigns that fell just short of glory, the overall picture reveals very different realities among the giants of Buenos Aires and Avellaneda.River Plate: The most consistent despite the final blowWhen coldly analyzing the statistics, River Plate stands out as the club with the best performance in this stretch, even if the ending was bitter. Los Millonarios fought on all fronts and reached the grand final of the Torneo Apertura, where they unfortunately suffered defeat. Even so, their international presence remains solid after qualifying for the Copa Sudamericana round of 16, while they also remain alive domestically after reaching the Copa Argentina round of 32.Boca Juniors and the crisis of eliminationsThe other side of the coin is Boca Juniors, who close out a semester that was extremely unfavorable to their ambitions. The club from La Ribera endured an international failure after being eliminated in the Copa Libertadores group stage, which was followed by an early exit in the Torneo Apertura round of 16. The only competition they have left to salvage the year is the Copa Argentina, where they have qualified for the round of 32.The outlook in Avellaneda and BoedoOver in Avellaneda, Racing Club advanced to the Apertura quarterfinals and is still alive in the Copa Argentina, but its disappointing elimination in the Copa Sudamericana group stage tarnished the campaign.Meanwhile, Independiente, with no international competition on its calendar, bowed out in the local tournament round of 16, salvaging only its qualification for the Copa Argentina round of 16.Finally, San Lorenzo rounds out a forgettable semester: out in the Sudamericana group stage, eliminated in the Apertura round of 16, and clinging only to the round of 32 of the federal competition. And you, who do you think did better? This article was translated into English by Artificial Intelligence. Novak Djokovic stunned in French Open by Joao Fonseca to follow Jannik Sinner out of disintegrated bracket
Novak Djokovic stunned in French Open by Joao Fonseca to follow Jannik Sinner out of disintegrated bracket originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.It was deja vu all over again at Roland Garros on Friday.A day after Jannik Sinner was stunned at the French Open, Novak Djokovic suffered the same fate.Sure, Djokovic isn't in his prime like Sinner, but he's one of the few greatest tennis players in the history of the sport. But now he's out.The bracket had already opened up in a major way with Sinner's defeat on Thursday when the heat caused him to collapse. Now it's truly anyone's tournament.Djokovic won the first two sets over 19-year old Joao Fonseca 6-4, 6-4.The kid came back 6-3, 7-5, 7-5.Fonseca won it with three consecutive aces from down break point, to deuce, to advantage, to the win.According to The Tennis Letter:Fonseca is the first teenager to beat Djokovic in a Grand Slam event. He's the second player ever to come from two sets down to beat Djokovic, and the first in 16 years.Djokovic was previously 289-1 when leading two sets to none.Fonseca was down 1-3 in the fifth set, and also up against two break points to go down 3-5 in the fourth. It was the longest match Djokovic had ever played at Roland Garros, and while he pretty much has always won those marathon matches in his career, not this one.Fonseca may grow into the future of tennis, or this may be a one-time moment.Either way, it's a monumental day for the Brazilian teenager at Roland Garros.

Jaxson Dart on introducing President Trump: "This was a unique opportunity"
Last Friday, Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart introduced President Donald Trump at a rally in New York. This Friday, Dart met with reporters.Following a Saturday dustup on social media sparked by linebacker Abdul Carter and a Wednesday team meeting, Dart made an opening statement that lasted more than four minutes. Here's the full content of his statement, as posted by Jordan Raanan of ESPN:"This was a unique opportunity. You know, being asked and given the opportunity to introduce the President of the United States, you know, my thinking was pretty simple. And the fact of, you know, I've always loved this country. "I have extended family members who have fought in wars. I have two uncles who have retired from the Air Force Academy, and served themselves. And I have a great grandfather who served as Secretary of Treasury at some point. So the president position has always been a position that I have always respected, regardless of political affiliation, regardless of political party, and my intentions were just that."I also understand in this world, politics can be a sensitive matter, a sensitive topic. I also understand that I am the quarterback of the New York Giants, and that involves a lot of responsibility. It's under a limelight, under a microscope, and there's a lot that comes with that, and it's been something that I've embraced. "I've loved being here. I love the city of New York. I love the city [sic] of New Jersey, the people that I've met here. It's just been a really amazing experience, and there's not another place that I'd rather be. "Most importantly, people in this organization, my teammates, the staff, coaches, everybody that has a hand . . . you name it. You know, I've loved making relationships with them and growing connections. And that's kind of a person that I am. I'm a connector. I love making relationships with people. I love hearing everybody's stories. And being somebody who, you know, people can rely on to be there for them. "Most importantly, I can honestly say that I love every single one of my brothers, my teammates on this team regardless of politics, regardless of religious beliefs, regardless of anything that may be different between us. Like, I love them and they know exactly what kind of person that I am, who comes into the facility every day. . . . I lay my body on the line for my guys each and every week. And it's from the connections that we build, the love that we have for each other. I've been somebody who's always respected the different perspectives that people may have, the backgrounds they come from — I understand that, you know, we have such a cool opportunity as people, to be in the locker room where it's a melting pot of people from everywhere and you get to be together. "I think that the connections that we build are special, because, you know, we're able to have vulnerable conversations, we're able to learn from each other, to support each other irrespective of the color of our skin. And, you know, we have a real brotherhood. "We've had a lot of honest conversations with each other as a team, and I'd like to keep those things private between me and my teammates and just everything that's been said. But, you know, I love these guys and going forward, I can't wait for what more we have to grow, you know, the culture of this team, our brotherhood, and obviously we understand the biggest goal is to be the best team that we can be, to put ourselves in the best position to succeed, to chase a championship, to be the best players for Coach Harbs and all the coaches here. And, you know, that's our focus going forward each and every day. And can't wait to continue to do that."Whether that ends it remains to be seen. Others will surely be asked about the situation, including Carter.

Tottenham Hotspur Are Set To Sign This Liverpool Defender: Good Signing For De Zerbi?
Tottenham Hotspur Are Set To Sign This Liverpool Defender: Good Signing For De Zerbi? In a recent post on X, respected journalist Fabrizio Romano stated that Tottenham Hotspur are set to sign Liverpool defender Andy Robertson. It has been claimed that Spurs have reached a verbal agreement to land the Scotland international on a free transfer this summer.Robertson’s Important Role At LiverpoolRobertson proved his worth as a decent squad player for the Merseyside club in this campaign and managed to put in a few impressive displays on the left side of their defence. The 32-year-old has made 36 appearances for the Reds this season, scoring three goals and grabbing two assists on all fronts. The Scottish talent is one of the most experienced left-backs in the Premier League. Therefore, it is no surprise that Tottenham have moved in so quickly to sign him this off-season.Robertson is currently on an expiring contract at Anfield, so Spurs would do well to acquire his services on a free transfer in this summer transfer period.LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND – MAY 24: Andy Robertson of Liverpool reacts during the Premier League match between Liverpool and Brentford at Anfield on May 24, 2026 in Liverpool, England. (Photo by Jack Thomas/Getty Images)Will Robertson Be A Good Signing For Tottenham Boss Roberto De Zerbi?Robertson is a solid tackler of the ball and can scan the danger well to secure possession back for his side inside his half. He doesn’t mind clearing his lines when needed and is a tidy passer as well. The Scottish sensation can even chip in by scoring and creating a few important goals for his team from the left flank. Robertson is primarily a left-back but can also operate as a left-sided wide player if asked to do so. He has got the experience and winning mindset to be a real asset in Tottenham‘s squad.Robertson would bring more quality and experience to Spurs boss Roberto De Zerbi’s backline. He has what it takes to compete for a regular first-team spot at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the coming years. At 32, Robertson might still have a couple of good seasons left in him to play at a high level. Hence, he would be a great signing for Tottenham in the short term. He already knows the Premier League well and won’t take much time to adjust to life at the North London club. All in all, Robertson would be a good signing for Spurs, so De Zerbi would be wise to get a deal done for him soon.

Pride returns to Budapest after dictator was voted out
Authorities in Budapest have given the green light for the Hungarian capital’s Pride parade to march again this June, after last year’s event was banned under authoritarian leader Viktor Orbán. Orbán’s government was deposed in elections in April. Related Anti-LGBTQ+ Trump-backed Viktor Orbán loses reelection. Will things improve for LGBTQ+ Hungarians? “During the notification process for the 2026 Pride parade and the subsequent in-person consultation with the organizers, no grounds for prohibiting the assembly arose,” Budapest police said in a statement to AFP. Orbán’s Fidesz party passed legislation last year to ban all Pride events in Hungary. In response, more than 200,000 attendees showed up in defiance, attracting supporters from across Europe. Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today “We warmly welcome everyone in June who took part in last year’s demonstration, as well as those who continue to believe in equal rights and a democratic Hungary, and those who would like to once again celebrate the transition to democracy,” Budapest Pride said in a statement on social media. The OK comes as the European Union released more than €16bn in funds withheld from the country after Orbán’s government continued to flout EU rules and conventions on human rights and other issues. “We can already feel a strong wind of change across Hungary,” Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, said at a press conference announcing the release. “In only a few weeks, you have driven forward long overdue reforms,” she told Orbán’s successor, Prime Minister Péter Magyar, at the event in the EU capital, Brussels. “What connects us will be stronger than what divides us,” Magyar said at his swearing-in. “Hungary will be home for every Hungarian, and everyone can feel like they have a place in the Hungarian nation. Family, friends, and communities will be able to speak to each other again.” While Magyar’s government has not directly addressed the Pride-ban legislation — still on the books but ruled unconstitutional by the country’s high court last year — the new prime minister pledged in Brussels to rectify every issue that precipitated freezing the EU funds. That money is earmarked for housing, transport, energy, social policy, and other sectors in Hungary. About €2.2 billion (around $2.6 billion) of the funds still frozen are contingent on “academic freedom” being restored in Hungary’s universities, the Guardian reported. Following last year’s Pride march ban, the progressive mayor of Budapest, Gergely Karácsony, rebranded the parade as a “municipal” event to sidestep the government’s shutdown. He was charged with defying the ban just weeks before April’s elections. “I have gone from being a proud suspect to a proud defendant,” Karácsony said after prosecutors took him to court. He welcomed the news of Pride’s official return to the capital. “Freedom and love cannot be banned,” Karácsony posted to socials. “This is an event of freedom-loving Hungarians. It was last year, it will be this year, it will always be.” Subscribe to the LGBTQ Nation newsletter and be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Drama before first ball! Rajasthan Royals win controversial re-toss against Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 2
A strange moment created confusion and controversy at the toss ahead of the Rajasthan Royals versus Gujarat Titans clash after the coin flip had to be conducted twice. Rajasthan Royals captain Riyan Parag had made the call during the first toss, but match referee Prakash Bhatt stated that the call was not heard clearly enough. With uncertainty over the original call, the officials decided to redo the toss altogether.— IPL (@IPL) The second toss once again went Rajasthan Royals’ way, with Parag winning it before opting to bat first on the same surface that hosted the Eliminator earlier in the tournament. The incident immediately became a talking point because of the importance of the toss on a used pitch expected to slow down significantly during the second innings. Interestingly, Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill later admitted his side would also have preferred to bat first. “We would have batted first as well. Forty overs of cricket already on this wicket and it won't behave differently,” Gill said after the toss. Parag, meanwhile, backed Rajasthan’s decision to put runs on the board first. “We will bat first. Pretty much the same wicket, but I think it slows down at the backend, and we have the bowlers for it,” Parag said. With conditions expected to get tougher for batting later in the game, the unusual re-toss only added extra drama before the high-stakes encounter.Teams:Gujarat Titans (Playing XI): Sai Sudharsan, Shubman Gill(c), Jos Buttler(w), Nishant Sindhu, Washington Sundar, Jason Holder, Rashid Khan, Ravisrinivasan Sai Kishore, Kagiso Rabada, Prasidh Krishna, Mohammed SirajRajasthan Royals (Playing XI): Yashasvi Jaiswal, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Dhruv Jurel(w), Riyan Parag(c), Donovan Ferreira, Dasun Shanaka, Ravindra Jadeja, Jofra Archer, Nandre Burger, Brijesh Sharma, Yash Raj Punja

Jorge Mateo back in the lineup for the Braves
ATLANTA, GEORGIA - MAY 24: Jorge Mateo #2 of the Atlanta Braves bats against the Washington Nationals in the eighth inning at Truist Park on May 24, 2026 in Atlanta, Georgia. (Photo by Brett Davis/Getty Images) | Getty Images The Atlanta Braves have lost three of their last five games, and their offense has been a roller coaster. They scored seven and ten runs respectively in their last two wins, but scored zero runs twice and one run in the other game. Still, their offense ranks as second in MLB in total runs scored. The Braves will have a chance to build on their ten run performance from yesterday when they face off against Chris Paddack who is struggling to a 6.86 ERA. His expected ERA (xERA) is much better at 4.32, but us still to a point that the Braves on paper should be able to tag him for some runs.Mike Yastrzemski has done very well against Paddack in his career. In twenty-five at-bats he has three HRs, a .400 average, and 1.324 OPS. Ozzie Albie has been successful as well with a .364 average and 1.000 OPS in eleven at-bats.A big question mark before the lineup card dropped was whether Dominic Smith would DH since Walt Weiss has been known thus far to not use the same lineup everyday. Smith has had a fantastic season, but has struggled to a .182 average against Paddack in eleven at-bats, but has a HR. Another lineup move that many likely had their eyes on was who was going to play SS. Jorge Mateo has been on fire by his standards this year. He has started nineteen games and has multi-hit games in eight of them. That being said, the reason he got the start yesterday was likely due to the pitcher being a lefty. Ha-Seong Kim has clearly struggled this season, but he also has not fully ramped up. New series on deck!#BravesCountrypic.twitter.com/ibGo19UkAZ— Atlanta Braves (@Braves) May 29, 2026As it turns out, Smith did end up being in the starting lineup and will bat fifth. Mateo also got the start proven against the idea what Weiss may be using his as the main option for lefties moving forward. Chadwick Tromp will get the start a week after his walk-off magic in the eleventh inning.Grant Holmes will take the mound the the Braves to face the Reds. No Reds player has faced Holmes more than seven at-bats, but most of the ones that have had success against him. Of the nine players to face him, six of them have at-least a .333 average.TJ Friedl is the player to keep an eye on. In his four at-bats against Holmes, he has two HRs.Rocking the City Connects against the Braves. Powered by @PNCBankpic.twitter.com/uzjoZUMmFp— Cincinnati Reds (@Reds) May 29, 2026Interestingly, Freidl will be batting ninth against Holmes. As can be seen in the graphic above, the Reds will be wearing their city connect jerseys this evening. The Braves look to jumpstart their offense tonight. First pitch is at 6:40 EDT

‘Can’t be signed with a fixed fee, paid in installments’: Atletico send clear message to Barcelona over Julian Alvarez pursuit
‘Can’t be signed with a fixed fee, paid in installments’: Atletico send clear message to Barcelona over Julian Alvarez pursuitAtletico Madrid tried to use sarcasm and mockery today to fire shots at FC Barcelona through a series of ironic posts on their official X account involving imaginary transfer offers for Lamine Yamal, Pedri and Raphinha. The posts came in response to growing reports linking Barça with a move for Julian Alvarez, as well as claims that the Catalan club had already submitted an offer for the striker, something Atletico firmly deny.Atletico Madrid furiousNow, according to Mundo Deportivo, Atletico Madrid’s tirade, filled with sarcastic messages, may have appeared light-hearted on the surface, but behind the jokes was a much more serious frustration inside the Metropolitano offices.“It might seem like a joke or a bit of humour, but this is very serious. We’ve been very angry with FC Barcelona for some time now. It was done ironically, to hold a mirror up to the Catalan club, to show them what they’re doing,” club sources told MD.Atletico believe there has been a coordinated campaign around the future of Alvarez. Club sources even pointed to specific examples to explain their frustration.Atletico are attacking Barcelona. (Photo by Aitor Alcalde/Getty Images)“The messages from Fabrizio Romano, those from the press that covers the team, like when Cerezo goes to eat in Barcelona and they bombard him with impertinent questions about whether he’s going to negotiate with Laporta for Julian, the way they treat our players in the mixed zone…,” they said.Continuing venting out their frustration, the source from Atletico Madrid said: “They organize a dinner in Barcelona and alert El Chiringuito so they can film it, so Juanma López (a player agent and supposed mediator in this matter) is seen leaving the restaurant.“They leak an offer that we claim has been sent, but nothing has arrived here (at Atletico).”Within the club, they accuse Barcelona of “destabilising things for months” with this issue. “It’s over. We’re very angry and this was our way of showing it,” the source added.Alvarez not for sale for any feeHowever, Atletico feel protected because Alvarez remains tied to the club until 2030 and has a €500 million release clause.“What is clear is that Atletico holds all the cards. The player is protected (€500 million release clause) and has a long-term contract (until 2030),” the source added. The Rojiblancos continue to repeat the same message internally and publicly: “Atletico is delighted with him, he has a long-term contract, he’s protected, and we’re counting on him for next season.” Not for sale for any fee. (Photo by Shaun Botterill/Getty Images)Although earlier reports speculated that a deal might eventually happen for around €150 million, sources at Atlético now dismiss that idea completely.“Julian can’t be signed with a fixed fee, paid in installments over several seasons with some variables. It’s a €500 million cash payment that needs to be deposited at La Liga headquarters,” they stressed.Atletico also defended the role of the player’s agent, Fernando Hidalgo, amid criticism surrounding the negotiations.“If Barcelona had done things properly, the agent wouldn’t be involved. But if you’re bypassing the club, then you’re not doing things the right way. “Agents make a living from this. It’s normal; it’s what they usually do because it’s their job. The problem is Barcelona ,” they conclude.

Novak Djokovic of Serbia cools himself during a break of the third round men's singles tennis match against Joao Fonseca of Brazil at the French Open tennis tournament in Paris, Friday, May 29, 2026. (AP Photo/Christophe Ena)2026-05-29T12:02:12Z PARIS (AP) — Novak Djokovic’s latest quest for a record 25th Grand Slam was ended by Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca in the third round of the French Open on Friday. The 39-year-old Serb — a three-time champion at Roland Garros — lost 4-6, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, 7-5 as temperatures again reached 33 degrees C (91 F).Djokovic looked exhausted in the fifth set but soldiered on and his exit leaves the men’s draw even more open following Jannik Sinner’s second-round exit on Thursday.Facing Fonseca for the first time, Djokovic mixed trademark defense with stunning winners and delicate drop shots to win the first two sets. But Fonseca proved resilient and the tied the match on sets. In the final game, Djokovic had a break point for 6-6 but Fonseca served out with three consecutive aces.“I just enjoyed being on court and what a pleasure it was. It’s my first stepping on court against him,” Fonseca said. “I was just trying to hit the ball as fast I could. Djokovic don’t miss, we still think he’s 20. At the end of the match I think he was more fit than me, that’s crazy.” About his flurry of aces, he joked: “I felt like (big server) John Isner. I never did this before.” Then he wished his mother in the crowd happy birthday and thanked all the Brazilians in the crowd.Djokovic put ice packs on both sides of his face during changeovers. Still, he looked to be in command when he clinched the second set with a forehand volley at the net. After introducing Donald Trump, Jaxson Dart says he and Giants had ‘a lot of honest conversations’
One week after introducing President Donald Trump at a New York rally, Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart addressed his decision and conversations he had with teammates.Dart’s introduction drew public attention, including from his fellow 2025 Giants first-round pick Abdul Carter. The defensive lineman initially tweeted “thought this s— was AI, what we doing man,” before later tweeting “Me and JD6 are good! We spoke earlier as Men. Y’all can keep y’all narratives.”Carter has since deleted both tweets.Dart said Friday that “the presidential position has always been one I’ve respected regardless of political affiliation,” noting his family members who fought in the military and served in the federal government. “I also understand in this world, politics can be a sensitive matter, a sensitive topic,” Dart said in a statement spanning more than 4 minutes. “I also understand that I am the quarterback of the New York Giants, and that involves a lot of responsibility, and it’s under a limelight, under a microscope. UNC football loses quarterback
The North Carolina Tar Heels' football program is hoping that things will be better here in 2026 after a disaster of a season in 2025. In the first year under Bill Belichick, the Tar Heels went 4-8 and 2-6 in conference play. With an offseason of additions and subtractions for the roster, it will be a different team. But on Friday, the Tar Heels lost a potential key piece to the offense. After transferring to North Carolina, quarterback Taron Dickens has officially decommitted from the program. He spent the past few months, including spring practice, with the Tar Heels. However, he has made the decision to leave, likely due to his spot on the depth chart. BREAKING: Western Carolina transfer QB Taron Dickens has decommitted from North Carolina, @InsideCarolina reports.Dickens passed for 3,508 yards, 38 touchdowns and 2 interceptions this season.https://t.co/GyfmA8js0Shttps://t.co/Pk4a84t0B6pic.twitter.com/3KDv9ahrTk— On3 (@On3) May 29, 2026Dickens had a big year at Western Carolina in 2025, throwing for 3,508 yards, 38 touchdowns and 2 interceptions for the Catamounts. However, as the Tar Heels' practices went on, former Wisconsin quarterback Billy Edwards emerged as the quarterback on top of the depth chart. North Carolina still has some depth at the quarterback position despite the departure of Dickens. But it's always good to have options. Giants' Abdul Carter felt the need to call out Jaxson Dart to show he is against Donald Trump
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — New York Giants linebacker Abdul Carter said Friday he felt the need to call out quarterback Jaxson Dart publicly for introducing President Donald Trump at a rally last week.“Some things are bigger than football, and this is one of those things,” Carter said. “Jaxson is one of our leaders. He’s the face of our franchise. He not only represents himself and what he does, but he represents all of us and that goes for anybody who wears a Giants uniform. But if he chooses to align himself with a man like President Trump, it’s my responsibility based on what I believe and what I stand on to not only show my teammates that I’m against that — but to show the world.”Carter took to social media on Saturday to criticize his teammate after realizing a video of Dart on stage with Trump was real. Hours later, Carter said he and Dart spoke and were fine and echoed those sentiments after an offseason workout practice.“That doesn’t mean that we have to spread hate,” Carter said. “It doesn’t mean that me and Jaxson hate each other or we have beef. I sit next to Jaxson every day, every team meeting. We’re close. We talk. As long as we make sure we’ve got the same goal as a team and our goals align, which they do, then I feel like that’s all that matters.”Dart said in a pre-prepared statement he discussed the situation with teammates and did not invoke Trump's name. He said he valued the office of the president.Coach John Harbaugh said he felt the Giants would be a better team coming out of the situation.___AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/NFL

ESPN places UCLA's QB situation in the 14th Tier of all FBS schools
It’s a massively important year for UCLA Bruins quarterback Nico Iamaleava. Things haven’t gone as smoothly as imagined for the former five-star recruit but the young quarterback can prove his worth this season with the Bruins. If things go great for Iamaleava in 2026 then he could be headed to the NFL Draft next season, foregoing his final year of eligibility. If things are a struggle for Iamaleava then perhaps he and/or UCLA would think of other options for the 2027 season, potentially leading Iamaleava back to the transfer portal. ESPN ranked all 138 FBS teams’ quarterback situations heading into the 2026 season, with ESPN writer David Hale penciling in Iamaleava and UCLA at No. 57-65 in the 14th tier. Surrounding UCLA in Tier 14 is DJ Lagway and Baylor, Maddux Madsen and Boise State, Ashton Daniels and Florida State, Katin Houser and Illinois, Kansas and their multiple options at QB, Drake Lindsey and Minnesota, Virginia with Beau Pribula and Eli Holstein and West Virginia with Michael Hawkins Jr..Hale did note an interesting statistic surrounding Iamaleava that shows his success grows when he leaves the pocket. Iamaleava vs. FBS opponents:Inside the pocket: 46.8 QBR, 5.2 yards per dropbackOutside the pocket: 91.9 QBR, 8.0 yards per dropback“Iamaleava had 520 rush yards on non-sack scramble plays last year -- the most among returning quarterbacks,” Hale wrote. “Iamaleava averaged just 9.27 yards per completion last season, the worst in the Power 4.”With a more complete roster and an improved coaching staff, the time is now for Iamaleava’s breakout. If new offensive coordinator Dean Kennedy can untap Iamaleava’s ability with his legs and his arm, the 6’6” quarterback could be a star this fall for the Bruins. This article originally appeared on UCLA Wire: ESPN's ranks UCLA's quarterback situation as middle-of-the-pack

Sean O’Malley defies Joe Rogan, gives full support to controversial White House UFC Event
Photo by Cooper Neill/Zuffa LLCSean O’Malley knew exactly what he was signing up for when he agreed to fight at the UFC White House event.UFC is set to hold its first-ever event at the White House, with fights scheduled to take place outdoors on the South Lawn. And though there’s plenty of excitement around the occasion, UFC commentator Joe Rogan has raised concerns about holding fights in an outdoor setting. Joe Rogan has been vocal about his concerns regarding the event from the start. When it was first announced, he questioned the timing and even referred to it as a gimmick, a sentiment that Donald Trump surprisingly echoed, though he tried to frame it positively.Photo by Geoff Stellfox/Getty ImagesO’Malley responds to Rogan’s comments in support of White House eventRogan’s latest issue is with the decision to hold the fights outdoors. He feels that exposure to heat and weather could impact performance and lead to results influenced by factors beyond the fighters’ control.Despite Rogan’s doubts, former UFC bantamweight champion Sean O’Malley, who is set to face Aiemann Zahabi at the event, doesn’t entirely agree. Instead, he’s spoken out in support of how things are being done.“It’s definitely, it’s at the White House, so you’ve got to deal with whatever you’ve got to deal with,” O’Malley told MMAJunkie.“It would suck to lose because of a reason outside of your skillset. May the best man win. If something plays a role because it’s outside and it affects the fight somehow, that would suck; it’s unfortunate, but none of us signed the contract thinking it was inside.“We all know it’s outside, we all know what we’re getting into, maybe not to an extent, we don’t know all of what’s gonna happen, but we all know it’s gonna be outside and we’ve got to possibly deal with stuff. We all signed (the contract).”The 31-year-old lives and trains in Arizona, where extreme heat is just part of daily life – though O’Malley hasn’t revealed whether or not he’ll make changes to his normal preparations. This isn’t everyone opting for the status quo either – Ilia Topuria has reportedly added outdoor sessions into his training camp before his lightweight title unification bout against Arman Tsarukyan later this summer.Read more:Why Joe Rogan says he’s worried about the UFC at the White HouseExplosive aftermath: Joe Rogan blindsided by Ray J’s strange interview following Brand Risk 14Joe Rogan says he hates the idea of having an UFC event at the White House

In the beginning I was struggling with the heat and not feeling good."With disbelief, he noted, "I just believed I could do aces, it was crazy. What Joao Fonseca said after beating Novak Djokovic at Roland Garros
Photo by Mateo Villalba/Getty ImagesJoão Fonseca produced one of the great Roland Garros shocks when he beat Novak Djokovic at Roland Garros, but his answer afterwards made the result feel even more remarkable. The Brazilian came through a five-set battle in Paris, with the BBC listing the score as Djokovic 6-4 6-4 3-6 5-7 5-7 Fonseca. That did not make the win sound smaller. It made it sound bigger, because it stripped away the usual post-match theatre and showed exactly why Fonseca was able to stay in the contest.Joao Fonseca gave the answer most players would never givePhoto by Chris Arjoon/Icon Sportswire via Getty ImagesMost players meet these moments with familiar lines about belief, fight and staying present. Those answers are often true, but they can also sound rehearsed.Asked how he kept believing he could win the match, Fonseca gave the answer most players would never give: “I actually didn’t. I just played. I just enjoyed being on court. What a pleasure it was. What an idol we have.”Fonseca did something better. He admitted that he did not really believe, then explained that he simply played and enjoyed being on court. That was the most revealing part of the night. He did not try to turn the comeback into a grand speech about destiny. He framed it as a privilege. He was sharing a court with Djokovic, a player he called an idol, and somehow that made the impossible feel lighter. There was no arrogance in the answer. There was no false bravado either. It was honest, funny, respectful and completely human. That is why it landed so strongly. The comeback matters more because Fonseca did not pretend it felt inevitableThe scoreline is important because it shows the size of what Fonseca did. Djokovic won the first two sets, then Fonseca won the next three. That kind of comeback against Djokovic at a Grand Slam should not be made to sound routine. It is not routine, especially when the opponent is a player with Djokovic’s record.Fonseca’s answer makes the result more impressive, not less. He was not claiming total certainty from the first ball to the last.He was saying something far more believable. He kept playing. There is a difference between belief and freedom. Fonseca’s answer suggested freedom mattered more.Once the match was no longer something he had to control, it became something he could enjoy. That is a dangerous place for a young player to reach, because it removes the fear from the occasion.Beating Djokovic at Roland Garros is never just another resultThis was not just any opponent. Djokovic is a 24-time Grand Slam champion and a three-time Roland Garros winner. That context matters. Beating him is a career-defining result for almost anyone.Beating him from two sets down at Roland Garros is something else entirely. It changes how people look at Fonseca, because it proves he can survive the kind of pressure that usually breaks younger players. The wider tournament picture only adds to it. The BBC said the men’s draw had been thrown open after the early exit of Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz not playing and Djokovic going out. That gives Fonseca’s win real consequence. It was not just a brilliant personal moment, it was a result that changed the shape of Roland Garros.Still, the quote should be what stays with people. Fonseca did not need to pretend he always knew this was coming. He played, enjoyed the court, respected the man across the net and found a way through. That is why his answer made the upset feel even better.Read more:Andy Roddick’s surprising message to Alexander Zverev has the tennis world buzzingHow hot was Paris?
