WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMThe Minnesota political assassinations show that the right is increasingly a violent threatThe suspect in the assassination of a Minnesota state legislator and her husband, and the shooting of another legislator and his wife, embodies all the threads running through the far right during the Trump era.Until he was named the suspect in the shootings last Saturday morning, Vance Boelter seemed like just another member of the MAGA universe. He was a registered Republican and a Trump supporter. He was also an evangelical minister who ran a security business. Related Jacksonville shooters racist manifesto also contained vile anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric In the hateful document, the gunman said he set out to slaughter both LGBTQ+ and Black people. Boelter is alleged to have shown up at the home of Minnesota state Rep. Melissa Hortman (D) and her husband Mark Hortman early Saturday morning, impersonating a police officer. He shot and killed both. He used the same ruse at the home of Minnesota state Sen. John Hoffman (D) and his wife, Yvette Hoffman, critically injuring both. Boelter was arrested yesterday. Dive deeper every day Join our newsletter for thought-provoking commentary that goes beyond the surface of LGBTQ+ issues Subscribe to our Newsletter today Both Hortman and Hoffman were supporters of the LGBTQ community. As speaker of the House in 2023, Hortman was instrumental in shepherding through trans rights protections, including a trans refugee bill that prohibits other states from interfering with gender-affirming health care in Minnesota.Following a shootout with police, Boelter escaped. Police found in his car a list of 70 people that Boelter allegedly marked for assassination. The list included politicians and abortion rights activists.According to a friend, Boelter was rabidly anti-abortion. But it turns out he was equally anti-LGBTQ+. Boelter traveled abroad to preach, and a video of a sermon he gave in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2023 is a diatribe against the community. African nations have been a target for American evangelicals looking to spread homophobia. Theres people, especially in America, they dont know what sex they are. They dont know their sexual orientation. Theyre confused, he said. The enemy has gotten so far into their mind and their soul. (Not surprisingly, the anti-LGBTQ+ legal group Alliance Defending Freedom was among the groups liked by Boelter on social media.)Boelter displayed many of the other characteristics of the religious right. He was apparently a supporter of Israel, as are many evangelicals, who believe that the countrys existence is a prerequisite for the second coming of Christ. Boelter traveled to Gaza, where, according to in-depth reporting on his past by WIRED, he sought out militant Islamists in order to share the gospel and tell them that violence wasnt the answer.Boelters security firm may have been as much role-playing as fact. Most of Boelters work history was in the food services industry, including managing a 7-11 store. According to NPR, his company, Praetorian Guard Security Services, has no record of any clients. The address in its incorporation papers belongs to a law firm specializing in divorces. The right immediately tried to brand Boelter as a progressive, churning out a ream of false information on the swamp that is X. The mainstream media immediately went for both sides, citing the attack on Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA) by an anti-Trump gunman in 2017. Theres no minimizing that attack, in which the gunman intentionally singled out Republicans at a softball game. However, the fact is the biggest threat of political violence comes from the right. In a statement, Donald Trump said that such horrific violence will not be tolerated and that the suspect will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. However, Trump has sent a very different message to his followers. Its not just the blanket pardons that he provided to the January 6 insurrectionists, including those who violently attacked police officers. Trump has also said hes considering pardoning a group of men convicted of plotting to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D), on the grounds that their conviction was a railroad job. The leader of the group had purchased an 800,000-volt taser for the kidnapping, and the FBI seized 70 firearms, 1,000 rounds of ammunition, and bomb-making equipment when they raided the group. In short, Trump has a history of excusing political violence from his supporters. His statement following the shootings was what youd expect from a president, but Trump didnt follow up with anything else. He hasnt called Gov. Tim Walz (D) to express his concern, nor has Trump tried to lower the political tensions that hes been doing his best to enflame the past week.Indeed, just days before the shootings in Minnesota, Sen. Alex Padilla (D-CA) was thrown to the ground and handcuffed at DHS Secretary Kristi Noems press conference, even though he identified himself as a senator. Instead of saying that the incident was a horrible mistake, Noem insisted that she had no idea who Padilla was, that he crashed her news conference, and that he was lunging toward her. Meanwhile, at her press conference, Noem herself was using language that indicated the administration was literally at war with the democratically elected leaders of Los Angeles and California. She declared that the presence of the National Guard was to liberate LA from the socialists and the burdensome leadership this governor and mayor have placed on this country and this city. With such inflammatory language, which consciously portrays half the country as a threat to the rest of the nation, violence finds fertile ground. WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMPolice arrest anti-LGBTQ+ pastor suspected of murdering pro-equality Democratic politicianVance Boelter, the 57-year-old anti-LGBTQ+ evangelical Christian accused of killing a pro-LGBTQ+ Minnesota state Democratic lawmaker and her husband over the weekend, has finally been arrested after an intense manhunt and will face four charges of second-degree murder. Boelter, who recently delivered an anti-LGBTQ+ sermon in Africa, allegedly impersonated a police officer before killing the states now-deceased state House Speaker Melissa Hortman (D) and her husband and allegedly shooting state Sen. John Hoffman (D) and his wife on Saturday morning. Related I am ashamed: Closeted MAGA Christian singer confesses to sexually abusing younger men His song Gods Not Dead became an anthem for the MAGA movement. Theres people, especially in America, they dont know what sex they are they dont know their sexual orientation, theyre confused. Carlson said that Boelter was a strong supporter of President Donald Trump, despite numerous right-wing social media posts by transphobic billionaire Elon Musk and other conservative politicians claiming that Boelter was a left-wing Marxist because he once served on a bipartisan board of Gov. Tim Walz (D).In a statement marking Boelters arrest, Walz wrote, Boelters unthinkable actions ended the life of someone who shaped the core of who we are as a state. Someone who was believed by colleagues on both sides of the aisle. Someone who sacrificed everything for public service. As a country, we cannot become numb to this violence. We are a deeply divided nation. That has become even more clear over the last two days. THEONION.COMSWAT Team Robot Successfully Dismantles Black ManLUBBOCK, TXSaying the threat posed too great a risk to the life of its officers, the Lubbock Police Department confirmed Thursday its SWAT team had deployed a robot that succeeded in dismantling a potentially dangerous Black man.A spokesperson for the department, which reportedly received dozens of calls from individuals claiming to have seen a Black man at a crowded downtown bus shelter, stated that a perimeter was established and the area was promptly evacuated. Law enforcement officials explained that in situations where a Black man is detected and cannot be destroyed by conventional police methods, the protocol is to send in a tactical robot. We get plenty of false alarms and hoaxes, but if theres a real chance were dealing with an actual Black man, well always prioritize the safety of our personnel and call in the unmanned unit, SWAT team commander Lt. Wyatt Hayes said of the robot that, with the aid of sensors mounted on its manipulator arm, could be operated at a distance of more than 1,000 feet from the Black man. Its our obligation to keep our officers out of harms way if we can, and were fortunate to have the technology that enables us to do that. But whats important right now is that residents remain calm, Hayes added. This is exactly the kind of threat police train for.As it advanced toward the target on its dual, tanklike treads, the robot assessed the scene with its camera and confirmed that an actual Black man was in fact present. According to police, the robot then began transmitting critical visual information to the specialist who would guide it throughout the delicate dismantling operation. You might think youre well outside the radius where a Black man can do you any harm, but you dont truly know what youre up against until youre in there, said Sgt. Roland Meyer, visibly perspiring as he remotely extended the robots arm and carefully guided its gripper claw into position. In this line of work, its impossible to be too cautious. But the public is counting on us to protect them from this kind of thing, Meyer continued. At the end of the day, we just want the people we serve to feel safe in this community.Officers eyed a nearby monitor anxiously as Meyer rotated the robots gripper and, once the appropriate angle had been achieved, began the dismantling procedure. After several tense minutes of precision maneuvers, the Black man was successfully neutralized and a relieved Meyer flashed a thumbs-up to a round of applause. With no further risk from the Black man, police reopened the area to the public. While some locals returned and quickly resumed their day, others said they werent ready to go back yet.Im grateful to the police, but its still unsettling to know there was a Black man in my very own neighborhood, said Darlene Hoover, a resident of a nearby apartment building who told reporters she would probably stay with friends several miles away for the time being. For all I know, there could be one in a restaurant or at the park or the supermarket. I just dont know if Ill ever feel comfortable here again. The dismantling follows an incident last month in which a Black man was spotted on a plane at Lubbock International Airport but was successfully detonated by police just before takeoff. The post SWAT Team Robot Successfully Dismantles Black Man appeared first on The Onion.0 Comments 0 Shares 42 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMGay Trump official says that gay people have achieved equality & normal gays voted for TrumpGay Trump loyalist and Kennedy Center President Richard Grenell declared in a Pride Month interview that gay people have largely achieved equality in this country and that normal gay people support Donald Trump.I think that we have largely achieved equality in this country for gays and lesbians, Grenell told Politicos Dasha Burns. I think that the gay left knows that, and so therefore, theyre coming up with new gimmicks and fringe stuff to keep the money flowing and to keep the power going within the Democratic Party. If you are within the Democratic Party as a gay person, what youve brought to the table is organizing efforts, money, and votes in the past thats all fallen apart. The more I talk to normal gays about thisWhen asked to explain what a normal gay is, Grenell said he was referring to not a radical gay that says that six-year-olds should have their boobs cut off or get hormone replacement therapy. Those are not positions that anyone holds. Conservatives will often falsely accuse LGBTQ+ people of supporting medical transition treatments for very young children in order to stir up anti-LGBTQ+ sentiment.Look, I think the reality is, is that we have to have normality, he continued. Thats what we were fighting for in 1993. We kept saying were normal, were just like you. We just love somebody of the same sex. You go to a Pride parade and its embarrassing! Its real fringe and its too sexual. And I think that we have to start critiquing ourselves. @RichardGrenell pic.twitter.com/8Vl3hn2ymk David Leatherwood (@brokebackUSA) June 14, 2025Despite Grenells statements where he was only referring to the rights of cisgender queer people LGBTQ+ people still lack many legal protections. Congress has not yet passed legislation banning anti-LGBTQ+ or even anti-gay discrimination, and the current administration is rolling back administrative rules that provided some protections for LGBTQ+ people. The current administration has attacked the rights of transgender people on multiple fronts, banning them from getting gender-affirming care or reducing access to it, banning them from serving in the military, and requiring schools to discriminate against trans students, going so far as to investigate states that try to treat trans kids equally.States are banning discussions of LGBTQ+ people in schools, LGBTQ+ authors from libraries, and drag performances from public spaces. The Trump administration has cut back funding for HIV/AIDS research and prevention. THEONION.COMTeacher Required To Provide Own SalaryBALTIMOREAs public schools across the country increasingly face budget shortfalls, educators like Patricia Harper, a fifth-grade teacher in Baltimore, have reportedly found it more necessary than ever to provide their own salaries. Im committed to coming into this classroom every day and helping my students learn, but in order to do this, Im now required to dip into my own pocket to cover my annual income, said the 10-year veteran of Baltimore City Public Schools, a district with more than 5,000 teachers who together would need to come up with an estimated $340 million to meet their annual salary requirements. While the PTA has held some fundraisers to pitch in, I unfortunately cant make rent with the $23 they gave each teacher from the proceeds of bingo night. Still, Im hopeful I can stretch the funds I have until the end of the school year, so long as the custodian doesnt catch me sleeping under my desk or swiping pizza burgers from the cafeteria for dinner. WWW.404MEDIA.COEmails Reveal the Casual Surveillance Alliance Between ICE and Local PoliceLocal police in Oregon casually offered various surveillance services to federal law enforcement officials from the FBI and ICE, and to other state and local police departments, as part of an informal email and meetup group of crime analysts, internal emails shared with 404 Media show.In the email thread, crime analysts from several local police departments and the FBI introduced themselves to each other and made lists of surveillance tools and tactics they have access to and felt comfortable using, and in some cases offered to perform surveillance for their colleagues in other departments. The thread also includes a member of ICEs Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and members of Oregons State Police. In the thread, called the Southern Oregon Analyst Group, some members talked about making fake social media profiles to surveil people, and others discussed being excited to learn and try new surveillance techniques. The emails show both the wide array of surveillance tools that are available to even small police departments in the United States and also shows informal collaboration between local police departments and federal agencies, when ordinarily agencies like ICE are expected to follow their own legal processes for carrying out the surveillance. In one case, a police analyst for the city of Medford, Oregon, performed Flock automated license plate reader (ALPR) lookups for a member of ICEs HSI; later, that same police analyst asked the HSI agent to search for specific license plates in DHSs own border crossing license plate database. The emails show the extremely casual and informal nature of what partnerships between police departments and federal law enforcement can look like, which may help explain the mechanics of how local police around the country are performing Flock automated license plate reader lookups for ICE and HSI even though neither group has a contract to use the technology, which 404 Media reported last month. An email showing HSI asking for a license plate lookup from police in Medford, OregonKelly Simon, the legal director for the American Civil Liberties Union of Oregon, told 404 Media I think its a really concerning thread to see, in such a black-and-white way. I have certainly never seen such informal, free-flowing of information that seems to be suggested in these emails. In that case, in 2021, a crime analyst with HSI emailed an analyst at the Medford Police Department with the subject line LPR Check. The email from the HSI analyst, who is also based in Medford, said they were told to contact you and request a LPR check on (2) vehicles, and then listed the license plates of two vehicles. Here you go, the Medford Police Department analyst responded with details of the license plate reader lookup. I only went back to 1/1/19, let me know if you want me to check further back. In 2024, the Medford police analyst emailed the same HSI agent and told him that she was assisting another police department with a suspected sex crime and asked him to run plates through the border crossing system, meaning the federal ALPR system at the Canada-US border. Yes, I can do that. Let me know what you need and Ill take a look, the HSI agent said.More broadly, the emails, obtained using a public records request by Information for Public Use, an anonymous group of researchers in Oregon who have repeatedly uncovered documents about government surveillance, reveal the existence of the Southern Oregon Analyst Group. The emails span between 2021 and 2024 and show local police eagerly offering various surveillance services to each other as part of their own professional development. In a 2023 email thread where different police analysts introduced themselves, they explained to each other what types of surveillance software they had access to, which ones they use the most often, and at times expressed an eagerness to try new techniques. This is my first role in Law Enforcement, and I've been with the Josephine County Sheriff's Office for 6 months, so I'm new to the game, an email from a former Pinkerton security contractor to officials at 10 different police departments, the FBI, and ICE, reads. Some tools I use are Flock, TLO, Leads online, WSIN, Carfax for police, VIN Decoding, LEDS, and sock puppet social media accounts. In my role I build pre-raid intelligence packages, find information on suspects and vehicles, and build link charts showing connections within crime syndicates. My role with [Josephine Marijuana Enforcement Team] is very intelligence and research heavy, but I will do the occasional product with stats. I would love to be able to meet everyone at a Southern Oregon analyst meet-up in the near future. If there is anything I can ever provide anyone from Josephine County, please do not hesitate to reach out! The surveillance tools listed here include automatic license plate reading technology, social media monitoring tools, people search databases, and car ownership history tools. An investigations specialist with the Ashland Police Department messaged the group, said she was relatively new to performing online investigations, and said she was seeking additional experience. I love being in a support role but worry patrol doesn't have confidence in me. I feel confident with searching through our local cad portal, RMS, Evidence.com, LeadsOnline, carfax and TLO. Even though we don't have cameras in our city, I love any opportunity to search for something through Flock, she said. I have much to learn with sneaking around in social media, and collecting accurate reports from what is inputted by our department.A crime analyst with the Medford Police Department introduced themselves to the group by saying The Medford Police Department utilizes the license plate reader systems, Vigilant and Flock. In the next couple months, we will be starting our transition to the Axon Fleet 3 cameras. These cameras will have LPR as well. If you need any LPR searches done, please reach out to me or one of the other analysts here at MPD. Some other tools/programs that we have here at MPD are: ESRI, Penlink PLX, CellHawk, TLO, LeadsOnline, CyberCheck, Vector Scheduling/CrewSense & Guardian Tracking, Milestone XProtect city cameras, AXON fleet and body cams, Lexipol, HeadSpace, and our RMS is Central Square (in case your agency is looking into purchasing any of these or want more information on them).A fourth analyst said my agency uses Tulip, GeoShield, Flock LPR, LeadsOnline, TLO, Axon fleet and body cams, Lexipol, LEEP, ODMap, DMV2U, RISS/WSIN, Crystal Reports, SSRS Report Builder, Central Square Enterprise RMS, Laserfiche for fillable forms and archiving, and occasionally Hawk Toolbox. Several of these tools are enterprise software solutions for police departments, which include things like police report management software, report creation software, and stress management and wellbeing software, but many of them are surveillance tools. At one point in the 2023 thread, an FBI intelligence analyst for the FBIs Portland office chimes in, introduces himself, and said I think I've been in contact with most folks on this email at some point in the past [] I look forward to further collaboration with you all.The email thread also planned in-person meetups and a mini-conference last year that featured a demo from a company called CrimeiX, a police information sharing tool.A member of Information for Public Use told 404 Media its concerning to me to see them building a network of mass surveillance.Automated license plate recognition software technology is something that in and of itself, communities are really concerned about, the member of Information for Public Use said. So I think when we combine this very obvious mass surveillance technology with a network of interagency crime analysts that includes local police who are using sock puppet accounts to spy on anyone and their mother and then that information is being pretty freely shared with federal agents, you know, including Homeland Security investigations, and we see the FBI in the emails as well, It's pretty disturbing. They added, as we have reported before, that many of these technologies were deployed under previous administrations but have become even more alarming when combined with the fact that the Trump administration has changed the priorities of ICE and Homeland Security Investigations. The whims of the federal administration change, and this technology can be pointed in any direction, they said. Local law enforcement might be justifying this under the auspices of we're fighting some form of organized crime, but one of the crimes HSI investigates is work site enforcement investigations, which sound exactly like the kind of raids on workplaces that like the country is so upset about right now.Simon, of ACLU Oregon, said that such informal collaboration is not supposed to be happening in Oregon. We have, in Oregon, a lot of really strong protections that ensure that our state resources, including at the local level, are not going to support things that Oregonians disagree with or have different values around, she said. Oregon has really strong firewalls between local resources, and federal resources or other state resources when it comes to things like reproductive justice or immigrant justice. We have really strong shield laws, we have really strong sanctuary laws, and when I see exchanges like this, Im very concerned that our firewalls are more like sieves because of this kind of behind-the-scenes, lax approach to protecting the data and privacy of Oregonians.Simon said that collaboration between federal and local cops on surveillance should happen with the oversight of the court. Getting a warrant to request data from a local agency seems appropriate to me, and it ensures theres probable cause, that the person whose information is being sought is sufficiently suspected of a crime, and that there are limits to the scope, about of information that's being sought and specifics about what information is being sought. That's the whole purpose of a warrant.Over the last several weeks, our reporting has led multiple municipalities to reconsider how the license plate reading technology Flock is used, and it has spurred an investigation by the Illinois Secretary of State office into the legality of using Flock cameras in the state for immigration-related searches, because Illinois specifically forbids local police from assisting federal police on immigration matters.404 Media contacted all of the police departments on the Southern Oregon Analyst Group for comment and to ask them about any guardrails they have for the sharing of surveillance tools across departments or with the federal government. Geoffrey Kirkpatrick, a lieutenant with the Medford Police Department, said the group is for professional networking and sharing professional expertise with each other as they serve their respective agencies. The Medford Police Departments stance on resource-sharing with ICE is consistent with both state law and federal law, Kirkpatrick said. The emails retrieved for that 2025 public records request showed one single instance of running LPR information for a Department of Homeland Security analyst in November 2021. Retrieving those files from that single 2021 matter to determine whether it was an DHS case unrelated to immigration, whether a criminal warrant existed, etc would take more time than your publication deadline would allow, and the specifics of that one case may not be appropriate for public disclosure regardless. (404 Media reached out to Medford Police Department a week before this article was published).A spokesperson for the Central Point Police Department said it utilizes technology as part of investigations, we follow all federal, state, and local law regarding use of such technology and sharing of any such information. Typically we do not use our tools on behalf of other agencies.A spokesperson for Oregons Department of Justice said it did not have comment and does not participate in the group. The other police departments in the group did not respond to our request for comment.0 Comments 0 Shares 41 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMI used to say Im not the marrying kind. Then conservatives set their sights on marriage rights. The Saturday night after the U.S. Supreme Court handed down its landmark decision in Obergefell v. Hodges in June 2015, I was on the street outside the Highline Ballroom in Manhattan doing an on-the-fly interview with Courtney Love, of all people. I asked her a few questions about the Pride event going on inside the venue before releasing her into the wild. But as she walked away, she turned back and shouted, Oh, by the way, congrats on the and pointed to the ring finger on her left hand.I laughed. Lady, I shouted back, Im not the marrying kind. Related Obergefell & Hodges unlikely friendship: The story of a marriage crusader & a reluctant defendant Rick Hodges didnt want to defend discrimination. Heres what the world could learn from their friendship. Not a lot has changed in the past decade on that front. I still dont think Im the marrying kind any more than I did when I was 32 and trying to impress Courtney-effing-Love with my contrarian snark amid a genuinely historic victory for LGBTQ+ rights. And I remain resolutely disinclined to investigate this self-conception particularly closely. (Though, Id hazard to guess that a therapist might chalk it up to some confluence of my slightly antisocial personality; the dismal examples of marriage set for me by my parents and their friends, all of whom seemed to actively hate their spouses; and growing up in an era in which legal same-sex marriage was not yet on the menu.) Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today This is the story I tell myself, anyway that marriage is bourgeois, is basic; that its an institution that privileges those of us lucky enough to find someone we think we can tolerate being around for the rest of our lives; that foolish people rush into it because its what they believe theyre supposed to do; that its perilously fragile; that its not for me.And yet, here is the thing that, as a 40-something-year-old confirmed bachelor with zero matrimonial prospects on the horizon, I rarely admit to anyone: I really, really want to have a wedding someday. As Ive watched friends and family, both queer and straight, tie the knot over the past 10 years, Ive gradually and honestly not even 100-percent consciously been cultivating a vision of my own dream nuptials. And in much the same way that the name Obergefell apparently lives rent-free in Clarence Thomass and Samuel Alitos heads, that vision lives in mine. Its really a mlange of a lot of different influences and pop cultural references as I assume most peoples concepts of their ideal weddings are some of which actually even predate Obergefell. So far as I can remember, I think the basic foundation came from seeing photos of Sex and the City author Candace Bushnells 2002 wedding, which took place on a beach in the Hamptons. The vibe was casually elegant, conveying that while this was an occasion, no one was taking the institutional trappings and formal expectations too seriously. The Long Island setting also recalled The Great Gatsby, and ever since, Ive imagined my reception as a Gatsby-esque party at a big house overlooking the water, where all the out-of-town guests would spend the whole wedding weekend together. Im from a small coastal town in North Carolina, and Ive decided that Id like to get married there, partly because my hometown is genuinely beautiful, and partly to deny any less-than-supportive relatives an excuse not to attend. If theyre going to snub my gay wedding, theyre going to have to be up-front about why.The reception has kind of always been the main focus for me, especially after I read Dan Savages 2005 book, The Commitment, in which he recounts how he and husband Terry Miller decided to have a big party to celebrate their relationship instead of a formal wedding ceremony. Thats pretty much what I want: a big party with all of my friends and family coming together to celebrate in a way that people only ever seem to feel obligated to do when its a wedding. It will be in a big white tent outside, with tons of string lights. My husband and I will dance to Sara by Fleetwood Mac for our first dance, and cabaret artist and MacArthur genius Justin Vivian Bond will perform after dinner, and there will be fireworks, and, ideally, fireflies. Insofar as I have thought about any type of ceremony, I think Id like to walk down the aisle to Sinad OConnors The Wolf is Getting Married. But maybe thats a little too on-the-noseThe only part I cant really imagine is the other groom. (Although other doesnt seem especially accurate here, as I am clearly verging on bridezilla territory.) And the cynic in me has to wonder if this whole thing is a supremely narcissistic fantasy. Its all about me, and god help the hypothetical man who is fool enough to 1) ask me to marry him and 2) believe that his own opinions vis--vis wedding planning will be considered. Do I just think I want a wedding because what I really want is a huge, elaborately produced celebration of myself, like every bride who ever bankrupted and traumatized her family so that she could feel like a princess for a day? Possibly. Probably? But I dont know. Maybe its more than that. Maybe that story I tell myself about marriage not being for me really is, as that imaginary therapist might point out, just the result of a lot of underexamined nonsense. (I refuse to entertain the word trauma here.) The fact that Ive dreamed up this fantasy wedding proves that Im clearly wrong in thinking that not a lot has changed for me in the past 10 years. When same-sex marriage became legal across the U.S. in 2015, I could afford to be flippant about it. Wed won. The right to marry seemed secure. I could say, Great news, thank you very much, but this had very little to do with me. But when Thomas and Alito signaled in 2020 and again in 2022 that they were eager to reconsider Obergefell, I was surprised how personally I took it. It felt like not only an attack on LGBTQ+ rights and equality, but like an attack on a potential future that, without even really realizing it, Id been dreaming up for myself. Thats not a feeling I could have imagined back in 2015.So, maybe what Im finally learning or unlearning is something all those people who fought so hard for marriage equality learned a long time ago, and that, hopefully, a generation of queer kids who are just entering adulthood have been fortunate enough to believe from the jump: that marriage is for us, if we want it. I mean, obviously, Im not going to resolve any of this stuff about whether or not Im the marrying kind, or what that even means, here. What I am realizing, though, is that my big, probably unrealistic wedding fantasy is more important to me than my cooler-than-thou cynicism about marriage, and, more importantly, that its not particularly useful, is borderline irresponsible to hold onto that cynicism at a time when the hard-won right to marry is potentially at risk.I dont know if I will ever meet someone who wants to marry me, or if I will want to marry them if they ask me, and Im okay with that. But I also know that I want to let go of this belief that marriage is not for me. Because thats what Thomas and Alito and all those state legislators calling on the Supreme Court to overturn Obergefell believe. So, Ill go on adding songs to the wedding reception playlist Ive been putting together, and thinking about blue hydrangea and honeysuckle table arrangements. Im sure the groom part will sort itself out.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 Comments 0 Shares 31 Views 0 Reviews
